Opis:
Promising results from the catalytic bleaching (Cat-bleaching) of oxygen-delignified hardwood kraft pulp (Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus grandis) with simple inorganic complexes prompted interest in discovering the soluble lignin components. The dissolved substances can be harmful to the environment and some dissolved substances may also have toxic effects on the environment. For these reasons, study of the the composition and structure of dissolved lignin components are of great importance. This investigation is part of a project on Cat-bleaching to obtain more information regarding the lignin components of bleaching effluents. The Cat-treatments of the pulp were performed at bench scale using simple inorganic complexes composed of (NH4)2S2O8 plus Cu(CH3COO)2 (Cu) or Co(CH3COO)2 (Co). The spent liquors obtained after Cat-bleaching were extracted using chloroform, in portions, and the compounds of interest from both the chloroform extracts were isolated using gravity column chromatography with the aid of the UV technique. The samples were analyzed by spectrometric(FT-IR, HSQC 2D-NMR, GC-MS) methods. The dissolved components extracted from the spent liquors from the Cat-bleaching were confirmed to be structurally similar to lignin. The major constituents extracted by organic solvents were identified as phenols, benzaldehydes, phenylethanones, benzoic acid and benzoic acid ethyl ester, which indicated extensive oxidation reactions on the pulp lignin including Cα–Cβ and alkyl-aryl cleavage in the lignin upon catalytical attack. The 2-methoxy phenol predominated, and its proportion was higher from the Cu-bleaching. But the carbonyl compounds (benzaldehyde + phenylethanone) released from the pulp after Co-bleaching had a higher ratio than those after Cu-bleaching. Identification of these carbonyl compounds from among the dissolved compounds contributed to the relation between lignin oxidation and lignin removal.

Opis:
Eucalyptus maidenii plantations are typically fertilized to increase the yields of eucalyptus oil and timber. However, the application of chemical fertilizers is costly and can cause environmental pollution and soil erosion. Mycorrhiza fungi can facilitate the cultivation of optimal seedlings while promoting the growth of trees. To date, investigations into the inoculation of endomycorrhizal fungi to enhance the productivity of E. maidenii in Yunnan, China have not been undertaken. The species/dominant species of endomycorrhizal fungi on E. maidenii in Yunnan were isolated and iden- tified. The effect of endomycorrhizal fungi on E. maidenii was elucidated. The major species of endomycor- rhizal fungi that affect E. maidenii were ascertained. Bulk soil was collected from an E. maidenii plantation, and the species of endomycorrhizal fungi were inves- tigated. The effect of the endomycorrhizal fungi on E. maidenii were analyzed via a single factor experimental design, where the number of spores of endomycorrhizal fungi in the seedling substrate were controlled. The major endomycorrhizal fungi species that affected E. maidenii were ascertained via stepwise regression analysis. Five endomycorrhizal fungal species were isolated from the bulk soil, with the dominant being Glomus ag- gregatum and Glomus mosseae. With higher counts of endomycorrhizal fungal spores in the seedling substrate, the infection rate and intensity of seedlings were observed to increase, as well as the NPK concentrations of the bulk soil. With the increased nitrogen concentration in the bulk soil, the nitrogen concentration of the aerial components of the seedlings also increased. The NPK concentrations in the bulk soil and seedlings, the second order lateral roots, the root activity, and the seedling height were significantly promoted by the presence of endomycorrhizal fungi (the third experimental treatment). The NPK concentrations of the bulk soil and seedlings, as well as the growth indices of seedlings increased through endomycorrhizal fungi inoculation. The major species of the endomycorrhizal fungi on E. maidenii were G. aggregatum, Glomus multicaule, and Claroideoglomus etunicatum.

There have been several efforts to plant trees in Uganda but the rate of tree planting has remained low perhaps due to coercing farmers to plant the tree species against their preference. In this study, the tree species’ preferences of farmers in Albertine rift are presented. Key informant interviews, focus group interviews and semi-structured household survey questionnaires were used. A sample of 218 households was selected randomly to include both tree farmers and non-tree farmers in Kiryanga Sub County. The descriptive summaries and content analysis were used in data analysis. Results indicate that Eucalyptus spp., Pinus spp., and fruit trees were most preferred. Farmers have different tree species’ preferences due to the benefits obtained from them. Provision of these suitable tree species’ seedlings will highly incentivize and enhance tree planting in Uganda.

Essential oil (EO) from Eucalyptus polybrachtea is used as complementary and traditional medicine worldwide. The present study aimed at compositional profiling of EO and molecular docking of EO’s bioactive compound 1,8 cineole against fungal enzymes involved in the riboflavin synthesis pathway, namely riboflavin synthase (RS), riboflavin biosynthesis protein RibD domain-containing protein (RibD), and 3,4-dihydroxy-2-butanone 4-phosphate synthase (DBPS) as apposite sites for drug designing against aspergillosis and mucormycosis, and in vitro confirmation. The compositional profile of EO was completed by GC-FID analysis. For molecular docking, the Patchdock tool was used. The ligand-enzyme 3-D interactions were examined, and ADMET properties (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity) were calculated. GC-FID discovered the occurrence of 1,8 cineole as a major component in EO, which was subsequently used for docking analysis. The docking analysis revealed that 1,8 cineole actively bound to RS, RibD, and DBPS fungal enzymes. The results of the docking studies demonstrated that the ligand 1,8 cineole exhibited H-bond and hydrophobic interactions with RS, RibD, and DBPS fungal enzymes. 1,8 cineole obeyed Lpinsky’s rule and exhibited adequate bioactivity. Wet-lab authentication was achieved by using three fungal strains: Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, and Mucor sp. Wet lab results indicated that EO was able to inhibit fungal growth.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of seed priming in improving seed germination and seedling vigor of Vicia villosa under laboratory conditions. Chemical stimulators included: gibberellic acid (125,250 and 500 ppm), salicylic acid (100,200 and 300 mg/lit) and extract of Eucalyptus camaldulensis (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 %). This experiment was carried out as factorial experiment based on a randomized completely design, with four replications. The results showed that Eucalyptus camaldulensis extract had inhibitive effect on germination and early seedling growth of Vicia villosa. Early seedling growth of Vicia villosa increased by pretreatment of seeds in chemical stimulators so that the highest effect was observed in gibberellic acid (250 ppm). The chemical stimulators don’t have any effect on germination speed. Interaction effects of allelopathic and pretreatment with chemical stimulators were significance on germination percentage, root, shoot and plant length and seed vigor index.

Opis:
Recurrent problems have been observed for biomass measurement in tree sprouts, mainly due to differences in patterns of biomass distribution and the bias generated by using models for mature trees. The objective of this research was to evaluate models to estimate aboveground biomass in sprouts from two-year-old stumps of Short Rotation Woody Crops (SRWC) used for energetic purposes. The study was conducted in Central Chile (Bío-Bío region) under a complete block design and four replications. Three plant species were included: Eucalyptus globulus, E. denticulata, and Acacia dealbata, established in three population densities (5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 trees per ha). Two groups of nonlinear models were used on three independent variables: root collar diameter (squared mean of two dominant stems), height (mean of two dominant stems) and number of epicormic stems. In the allometric model, the total aboveground biomass and the aboveground biomass by component were explained as the product of the mean square of the root collar diameter, mean height of the two dominant new sprouts and total number of epicormic sprouts as the predictive variable. Values of coefficient of determination (R2 ) ranged from 0.78 to 0.95 and RMSE ranged from 168 to 913 g. The species of E. globulus showed higher RMSE for biomass estimation in the all components except the branch component. The inclusion of dummy variables to identify the differences in each parameter of the models explained the seasonality of the biomass accumulation in tree sprouts at 10, 21, and 31 months of age, improving the model goodness of fit RMSE by 27%. Accurate prediction of sprouts aboveground biomass was obtained by the models only evaluating the two dominant epicormic sprouts in the stump, avoiding the need of individual sprouts evaluation or using destructive methods for biomass measurement.

Opis:
The use of biostimulants (amino acid containing protein hydrolysate) in forestry field has re- ceived much less attention so far than in agriculture. Promising evidences were reported in literature with useful application for nursery activities, stimulating early growth and reducing transplanting stress. This study investigates the potential benefits induced by an amino acid-based animal-derived protein hydro- lysate biostimulant (Siapton® by Isagro) in containerized Eucalyptus globulus seedlings following transplant- ing. Foliar and soil drench applications were applied using two different concentrations each (2.5 ml.l−1 and 5.0 ml.l−1 for foliar, 10 ml.l−1 and 20 ml.l−1 for soil). Measures on seedling height, apical shot formation, total aboveground (dry weight of leaves and stem) and belowground biomass (dry weight of roots) 120 days after transplanting were made to quantify the effect on growth. The contrasts analysis on results revealed a positive effect of the biostimulant on many of the measured parameters, especially with foliar application using the lowest concentration (2.5 ml.l−1). The foliar application was overall suggested as more efficient than soil drench also allowing lower inputs (i.e. biostimulant quantity). The main consequence of the treatment was an increased biomass allocation in the stem (above ground biomass) due to a stimu- lated leaves production which might suggest an increased photosynthetic activity and growth. Conversely no influence was detectable on total height of seedlings neither on the collar diameter. The biostimulant treatment on containerized Eucalyptus globulus positively influenced some features of seedlings’ growth after transplanting and the use of biostimulant with foliar application during the hardening phase in the nursery, appears to be a promising technique to potentially improve seedling growth after transplanting. An inter- esting impact from application of biostimulant on biomass accumulation following transplanting was here demonstrated. Anyway, further research to verify the results on different tree species as well as under open field conditions is envisioned.

The decomposition and nutrient release from the leaf litter of Eucalyptus camaldulensis in six different plots under Eucalypt plantation soils were investigated. Six soil samples as well as leaf litter from each plot were collected from the plantation. Using standard methods, the soil samples as well as the leaf litter samples were analyzed for chemical properties (pH, Organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium). Microbiological characteristics (Total viable bacteria and fungi, and Carbon (IV) oxide evolution) of the decaying leaf litter samples were also determined. All analyses were done at day 1, 30 and 60 of the decomposition period. Litterbag study was employed; each litterbag contained a soil and its corresponding leaf litter obtained from the particular plot were designated as E1 – E6. The decomposition rates of the litter in E1, E2, E3, E4, E5 and E6 were found to be 0.00393, 0.00331, 0.00479, 0.00571, 0.00548 and 0.00271 respectively. The results showed that there was a general decrease in nutrient status of the litter and an increase in soil nutrient during the decomposition period. Pearson’s correlation matrix revealed that there was a positive correlation in the release of nutrient from the leaf litters and their return to the soil at day 1, 30 and 60 in almost all the samples. It was also found that the total viable bacteria and fungi were statistically associated. These were attributed to their different soil microbiological and chemical properties. It is concluded from this study that decomposition and release of nutrient from E. camaldulensis leaf litters in different plots under Eucalypt plantation soils are differed according to plot condition.

Eucalyptus globulus Labill is one of the most important economic forest species in Portugal, occupying an area of 875.10³ ha in a total forest area of 3346.10³ ha (Tomé et al., 2007). The main goal of this study is to develop a dominant height growth model for Eucalyptus, applicable throughout the country, representing an improve of the curves that are part of the whole stand model existing in Portugal, the GLOBULUS model (Tomé et al., 2001). The dominant height growth model will be built on a biological function formulated as a difference equation (Algebraic Difference Approach) to an all possible growth intervals data structure. The dynamic model proposed, obtains non biased and efficient estimates for the parameters. Comparing to the already available model, the last has the advantage of expressing the asymptote in weather variables functions, meaning that it is possible to reproduce the eucalyptus growth according to weather changes.
