Opis:
The policy of open access to scientific publications at the Lublin University of Technology gave rise to the issue of sharing research data, which emerged to be a challenge for both research workers and librarians. Promoting awareness in the academic community of how the value and significance of their data increases and when others can make use of it is a novel and challenging task. The objective of this article is to present the activities undertaken for this purpose by the librarians of the Lublin University of Technology. These activities include introducing the Open Access Policy, creating a research data management strategy, and appointing two teams: one with the aim of supporting the University’s Project Office, and the second to create an institutional repository of research data. These actions contribute to the understanding of the value of sharing research results and how to be FAIR when doing so.

Opis:
There may be circumstances where academic degrees or the title of professor are obtained deceitfully, i.e. in breach of copyrights or moral principles in science. Dishonesty in scientific research constitutes gross misconduct because it is executed in order to appropriate ideas, findings, collocations and theses of others, without accurate citation of the source. It also entails infringement of intellectual property rights. Scientific misconduct in ethical and legal aspect is explicit. It disqualifies the offender as a scientist. The unlawful act of obtaining an academic degree (Ph.D.) or the title of professor in such a deceitful manner, irrespective of how much time has passed, shall not make the resumption condition fall under the statute of limitations. Thus, it enables the reopening of procedures to deprive the person who deceitfully obtained an academic degree or title of this degree or title.

Opis:
The ethic of education is a set of professional rules and regulations agreed upon by the scientific community that obliges actors to comply with codes of conduct in the science education process. This article is asking about levels and types of academic dishonesty and recognizing factors affecting it in Iran’s social sciences education. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews with Ph.D. students of public Universities in Tehran were analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Research findings show that academic dishonesty and factors affecting it are evident in the education of social science at two levels of micro and macro. At the micro or actor’s level, individual characteristics and personality traits of students and professors impact on the occurrence of academic dishonesty. Moreover, at the macro or structural level, the way of distribution of resources and rules in the education paves the way for and facilitates the occurrence of academic dishonesty. Consequently, dishonesty in the education of Iran’s social sciences and factors affecting it can be explained in the light of a structuration approach.

Opis:
There are 69 bioethics commissions in Poland that give their opinions on scientific research (experiments) on people. After explaining the necessary terminological issues regarding the classification of scientific research in medicine, the legal and ethical bases of the commissions’ activity, and the principles of assessing and controlling medical research, the author addresses the scope of independence and integrity of the bioethics commission. In the final part of the article, the author discusses the objections raised against bioethics commissions – especially, those concerning their independence, objectivity and reliability in the assessment of research proposals. The evaluation of activities of the bioethics commission in terms of its independence and reliability is positive – it is an institution of social control of medical research (especially, of experiments) on people. This control is not complete; however, it contributes to maintaining an adequate level of scientific research and allows for the protection of study participants.

Opis:
The paper summarizes the author’s experience of conducting economic scientific research. Economic scientific research is understood as both an analysis of economic phenomena and research purchased on the market of research services. The former are not subject to ethical dilemmas. It is a professional approach backed by sound economic theory that is important. The latter, regardless of who purchases research services, pose a risk of ethical dilemmas and conflicts of interest. The area of potential risk is connected to expectations of organizations purchasing research services. In most cases organizations are interested to receive objective assessments or recommendation necessary to take decisions. Ethical conflict appears when the destination of research is lobbing or a company’s image creation. The results of research may be used as an instrument of competition. It is thus vital that a research organization should judge the ethical dimension of undertaken research tasks. Research projects being socially beneficial should be definitely undertaken. In controversial cases, the conviction of the rightfulness in the ethical dimension ought to be decisive. In all cases the principal rule should be aiming at achieving scientifically objective assessments and opinions.

Opis:
The paper is a reply to the polemic with my article "The Structure of Scientific Theories and Systems of Values", which presented a number of analogies between methodological and metaethical problems. These analogies can be seen if we acknowledge the information surplus of evaluative statements in comparison to normative statements (similarly in science theories are stronger than observational statements), which is indicated by the examples of actual moral questions. The basis for the polemic is the fact that its authors deny the existence of this surplus, claiming that evaluations are equivalent to and not stronger than norms. Moreover, as they reduce metaethics to the issues of meaning, and methodology to the issues of justification, they have to deny the possibility of these two domains meeting on the ground of similar problems. The paper also illustrates the reasons for a modification of meanings of certain philosophical terms that appeared in my previous article.

Opis:
A prevailing lay understanding of retraction in the scientific literature is to correct for misconduct and honest errors. Nonetheless, though historically rare, retractions to limit the spread of results deemed socially harmful (i.e., information hazards), have gained increasing traction and become increasingly common. This study sought primarily to determine the extent to which information hazard-based retraction is supported in the scientific community and as a secondary goal whether individual difference variables moderate receptivity. We tasked a diverse sample of researchers across various disciplines who use social media to evaluate scenarios in which a paper was retracted for misconduct, honest errors, and information hazards. Overall, support for retraction on the basis of information hazards was low, suggesting that researchers overwhelmingly support academic freedom as a concept. Nonetheless, left-leaning ideologies predicted slightly greater defensibility of the practice among individuals early in their careers. We provide training suggestions to mitigate reactance toward controversial scientific findings.

This paper describes the phenomenon of ‘predatory conferences’, with the focus on the problems they cause for science. Predatory conferences fail to properly manage peer review, frequently have fictitious organizing committee, do not operate on any quality control, are unclear about their finances and about conference organizer or location. They are not selective in terms of post-conference volume contributions. Towards the end of the paper it is discussed what can and should be done to eliminate or reduce the effects of predatory conferences.
