The aim of this paper is to explore some of the meanings of frequently underestimated and misunderstood topic of eclecticism. In doing so, we would like to ask how the phenomenon of eclecticism was perceived in the past and whether it is correct to regard it as something more than just an abstract notion, namely: as a philosophical mindset and particular approach to life in general. The text is divided into two parts. The first one contains an outline of the history of eclecticism, understood as a notion and a kind of attitude. It is shown that, among others, it was thanks to the eclectic approach that emerging Christian civilisation would open itself to the heritage of the classical era; late antiquity and the Renaissance, both having produced ideas of religious humanism, are also indicated as the most eclecticism-related epochs. The second part aims at describing the phenomenon of eclecticism as, unlike syncretism, depending on a selection of elements rather than combining them together. It is presented as a way of philosophising and thus as a way of being, potentially creative and open to different viewpoints, yet, unlike skepticism, committed to the truth. All in all, the paper shall be perceived as a praise of eclecticism, assuming that it deserves far more appreciation and scholarly attention than has been given to it thus far.

W przypadku kontynentalnej secesji (Art Nouveau) w teorii i częściowo w praktyce ta nowa architektura miała za zadanie i cel separację, nierzadko radykalną, oddzielenie się od tradycji klasycystycznej i historyzującej mającej naśladować kierunki dawne. Natomiast brytyjska odmiana Art Nouveau poszukując nowych rozwiązań częściowo kontynuowała dziedzictwo przeszłości, a szczególnie tej wywodzącej się z mediewalnych korzeni, które ożywione zostały kolejno przez styl wiktoriański. Kiedy ten ostatni przeżywał czas wyczerpania twórczych i artystycznych mocy, osobliwie za sprawą industrializacji i masowego powielania wzorców estetycznych, pojawił się ruch Arts & Crafts. Esej niniejszy poświęcony został wyłącznie architekturze stworzonej w łonie tego ruchu. Jednakże architektura Arts & Crafts nie była konsekwentną opozycją wobec Art Nouveau. Starano się zachować fundamenty brytyjskiego patrymonium kultury architektonicznej implantując weń nowoczesne rozwiązania, antycypując nieraz osiągnięcia architektów pierwszej połowy XX wieku. Pozostając wiernymi duchowi, szczególnie angielskiego gotycyzmu, współtwórcy budownictwa w manierze Arts & Crafts zmodernizowali niejako dawny angielski rewiwalizm gotycki, tworzyli zupełnie nowe wartości artystyczne i estetyczne, nowe rozwiązania techniczne i urbanistyczne.
In the case of continental Secession (Art Nouveau) in theory and partially in practice the new architecture was meant to separate itself, often radically, from the classicist and historicist tradition which was to imitate previous currents. However, the British version of Art Nouveau, searching for new solutions, partially continued the heritage of the past, particularly that with medieval roots which were subsequently revived by the Victorian style. When the latter suffered a period of depletion of its creative and artistic power, because of industrialisation and mass copying of aesthetic designs, there appeared the Arts & Crafts movement. This essay is devoted solely to architecture created within that movement. However, Arts & Crafts architecture was not in consistent opposition to Art Nouveau. They tried to preserve the foundations of the British patrimony of architectonic culture by implanting into it modern solutions, often anticipating achievements of architects from the fi rst half of the 20th century. While remaining faithful to the spirit of, especially, English Gothicism, co-creators of buildings in the Arts & Crafts manner modernised, so to speak, the former English Gothic revivalism, and created entirely new artistic and aesthetic values, new technological and urban-planning solutions.

Esej niniejszy jest kolejną próbą uchwycenia malejącej perspektywy między pradawnymi źródłami architektury antycznej (klasycznej) a dynamicznym rozwojem architektury obecnej, w której najnowocześniejsza technologia wypiera dawne wartości historyczne. Powyższy tekst ilustruje zanikające wpływy klasycyzmu i preponderancję architektury futurystycznej, choć z pewną dozą optymizmu można dostrzec oznaki interakcji na bieżącą kulturę architektoniczną, w której znaczenie klasycyzmu, czy też nowego klasycyzmu, nie zaniknęło.
This essay is another attempt at grasping the dwindling perspective between prehistoric sources of antique (classic) architecture, and the dynamic development of modern architecture in which the latest technology supersedes the former historic values. The above text illustrates the vanishing influence of classicism and the preponderance of futurist architecture, though with a certain dose of optimism, one can see signs of interaction with current architectonic culture in which the significance of classicism, or the new classicism, has not disappeared.

Niniejszy esej poświęcony jest gmachowi ŁAN, który wprawdzie powstał w czasach sowieckiej opresji, jednakże tradycje powstawania budynków akademii nauk na Łotwie liczą się od czasów założenia, istniejącej między rokiem 1773 a 1775 Academia Petrina, erygowanej przez księcia Piotra Birona. Ale wraz z odzyskaniem niepodległości przez Republikę Łotewską życie naukowe w tym kraju ożyło, nabrało energii i nowego wigoru, którego centrum stał się gmach odnowionej Akademii Nauk.
This essay is dedicated to the LAS edifice which was created in the times of the Soviet oppression, though one has to remember that traditions of erecting the academy of science buildings in Latvia date back to the foundation of Academia Petrina, erected by Duke Peter von Biron, and existing between the year 1773 and 1775. When the Republic of Latvia regained its independence, the scientific life of the country was revived, acquired new energy and new vigour, the centre of which became the renovated edifice of the Academy of Science.

Fenomen artystyczny, architektoniczny, urbanistyczny i krajobrazowy, jakim jest Ringstrasse, budzi powszechne zainteresowanie nie tylko znawców historii sztuki. Jest bowiem ten niezwykłej urody bulwar osobliwym symbolem niepowtarzalnej epoki, która kojarzy się nierozerwalnie z panowaniem cesarza Franciszka Józefa I. Z epoką tą wiąże się integralnie rozkwit historyzmu (historycyzmu) i eklektyzmu, które tak wybitnie zaznaczyły się w okresie romantyzmu i pozytywizmu za długoletniego panowania tego monarchy. Był on również inicjatorem wybitnego dzieła znakomitych austriackich twórców planowania przestrzennego, jakim pozostaje po dziś dzień Ring. Tkankę tego prospektu wypełniają głównie najznamienitsze przykłady różnorodności i neostylowego pluralizmu architektury dojrzałego i późnego historyzmu, wśród których wyróżniają się: neogotyk i szczególnie różne warianty neorenesansu. Istotę wiedeńskiego neorenesansu określić można mottem Otto Wagnera, kreatora secesji i jednocześnie wybitnego historycysty, preceptora Gottfrieda Sempera: Artis Sola Domina Necessitas.
The artistic, architectonic, urban planning and landscape phenomenon, such as the Ringstrasse, evokes general interest not only among experts on art history. This boulevard of unusual beauty is a curious symbol of a unique epoch, which is inseparably associated with the reign of the Emperor Franz Joseph I. This epoch is integrally connected with the heyday of historism (historicism) and eclecticism, which made such a unique impact in the period of romanticism and positivism during the long-lasting reign of that monarch. He was also an initiator of the Ring which was and has since remained an outstanding work created by brilliant Austrian spatial planners. The tissue of this vista is predominantly filled with the most spectacular examples of diversity and neo-stylistic pluralism of architecture of mature and late historicism, among which the most distinctive are: neo-Gothic and especially variations of neo-Renaissance. The essence of the Viennese neo-Renaissance could be expressed using the motto of Otto Wagner, the creator of secession and at the same time an eminent historicist, preceptor of Gottfried Semper: Artis Sola Domina Necessitas.

the controversy between the Classicists and the Romantics aesthetic-literary eclecticism
Opis:
The object of the article is Franciszek Morawski’s commentary on his List do klasyków (Letter to the Classicists), a part of Klasycy i romantycy polscy (Polish Classicists and Romantics 1829). The poet makes use of thought of Johannes von Müller and Émile Deschamps in order to motivate the settlement between the Classicists and the Romantics. Only the settlement, which is in fact a sign of aesthetic-literary eclecticism, can enliven Classicism of that time. The rule of imitation, quite mechanically understood, and fear of any innovation in poetry are the reason of its decay.

The presented draft consists of two parts: the introduction and the substantive part, showing three faces of Cicero’s eclecticism: from his eclectic education, to eclectic receptionism, especially probabilism and skepticism. The first part of the draft is to show Cicero as the embodiment of the popularizer of the dual ideal of life: vita activa and vita contemplativa. A philosopher “suspended” between abstract Greek culture and pragmatic Roman culture, who knew that the foundation of law was not praetorian ordinances or twelve tables but the depth of philosophy. The second part of the study is an attempt to present the image of Arpinata as the original master of eclecticism, a classic of Roman philosophy, and the only sui generis theorist of state and law who combined mainly the tradition of the Stoics, Platonists and Aristotelians on an unprecedented scale and with an unprecedented ability. It is an attempt to look at Cicero’s literary and philosophical achievements from the perspective of his skeptical and probabilistic views on three branches of philosophy: ethics, philosophy of nature and dialectics. In each of these writing forms, it is worth careful scrutiny by researchers of Roman antiquity who argue on its influence on the shape of European culture.

W artykule jest analizowana Piotra Chojnackiego teoria filozofii przyrody. Teoria ta była istotnym składnikiem rozwijanego w polskim środowisku filozoficznym tomizmu lowańskiego, który znajduje się aktualnie w kryzysie. Pokazuję, że ta metafilozoficzna teoria jest eklektycznym zestawieniem elementów pozytywizmu, neokantyzmu i arystotelizmu. Argumentuję, że przyczyną kryzysu tomizmu lowańskiego był eklektyczny charakter tej filozofii. Aczkolwiek we współczesnej filozofii dochodzi do rehabilitacji eklektyzmu, to jednak z uwagi na dominujący scjentyzm i naturalizm perspektywy rozwoju filozofii przyrody inspirowanej programem neotomizmu lowańskiego wydają się mocno ograniczone.
The article analyzes the theory of philosophy of nature presented by Piotr Chojnacki. This concept was an important component of the Leuven (neo)Thomism, developed also in the Polish Thomistic philosophical milieu, which since the beginning of the 20th century has been in crisis. I argue that the cause of this crisis was the eclectic nature of the Leuven Thomism as it was developed by Piotr Chojnacki. Although in contemporary philosophy eclecticism is being rehabilitated, due to the dominant scientism and naturalism, the prospects for the development of the philosophy of nature inspired by the program of Leuven Thomism seem to be very limited.

The research on the surface structure of judgments was undertaken to confront the methods of building a jurisdictive text with the formalistic convention of the official legal discourse. The method of verbalising information in judgments is not only a linguistic form of shaping the style of expression but also and foremost a tool for regulating the extralinguistic reality. Hence, the actual effect depends on communication effectiveness. Based on the conducted analysis, it was found that the text of a judgment is characterised by semantic, stylistic and functional eclecticism resulting from the engagement of various (professional and unprofessional) entities in the text of the statement. It was proved that the analysed type of an act implementing the legal norms was a conglomerate containing elements of an idiolect, professiolect, dialect, and jargon. The grounds for the conducted research were the methods of pragmatic linguistics. Hence, the studies of the textual form allowed for the discoursive context.

RELIGIOUS ECLECTICISM IN THE PROSE OF LUDMILA ULITSKAYA Summary one of the unique features of Ludmila Ulitskaya’s prose is religious eclecticism. Its essence lies in the author’s aspiration to create a certain universal hierarchy of moral values and ethical standards, governing interhuman relationships, from elements of various religious traditions (Christianity and Judaism in particular).Sketching the portraits of her protagonists in search of their religious identity and sense of life, Ulitskaya creates a specific concept of man wherein she puts emphasis on the spiritual dimension of human existence and, at the same time, stresses the importance and significance of ethical and religious standards in literature.

Na skraju architektury tworzonej przez architektów zawsze istniało zjawisko architektury ludowej. Stanowiło ono nie tyle przeciwieństwo architektury uznawanej za wybitną, co nurt architektury toczący się niezależnie własnym rytmem i życiem. Określa się je mianem wernakularnego, z łaciny „vernaculus” oznaczający „rodzimy, ojczysty”. Określenie to nie wyczerpuje jednak złożoności zjawiska; jest bowiem różnica pomiędzy architekturą wernakularną i samym zjawiskiem wernakularyzmu, a przede wszystkim neowernakularyzmem, czy też architekturą projektowaną współcześnie na tradycyjnych wzorcach, również nazywaną neowernakuarną. Uznaje się powszechnie, iż architektura wernakularna to „architektura bez architekta, anonimowa, powstająca bez projektu, wpisana w tradycję społeczności i będąca sumą doświadczeń budowlanych, funkcjonalnych i estetycznych przekazywanych z pokolenia na pokolenie”. Kwestią pozostaje, czy określenie „powstająca bez projektu” oznacza, iż powstała ona historycznie bez projektu co czyniłoby ją wernakularną, czy nadal współcześnie powstaje w taki sposób, co musi stanowić o jej neowernakularności. Polscy teoretycy i historycy architektury pojmują pojęcie architektury wernakularnej na różne sposoby; Adam Miłobędzki wskazuje na lokalną tradycję budowlaną i użycie miejscowych materiałów, a Joanna Fiett lokuje ją pomiędzy architekturą prymitywną a autorską, kładąc nacisk na aspekt powielania i odtwarzania pewnego pierwowzoru uznanego za dzieło sztuki. Żadne z tych autorów nie zajmuje się, a tym bardziej nie ocenia, wartości architektury neowernakularnej z uwzględnieniem jej wtórności, uznając ją za prawie równie autentyczną co jej wernakularny wzór. Architektura wernakularna – rdzenna, kopiując wzór historyczny postrzegany jako dzieło sztuki, sama jednak na takie miano nie zasługuje, tym bardziej więc na miano dzieła sztuki nie zasługuje architektura neowernakularna, nie odmawiając jej wartości artystycznych, historycznych i niewątpliwego uroku. Nie wnikając w niuanse uważa się bezzasadnie, że architektura wernakularna to po prostu tradycyjne budownictwo regionalne, a uznając że powstało jako praca autorów bez przygotowania akademickiego, uważa się wernakularyzm po prostu za kierunek swobodnie czerpiący z architektury wernakularnej, bez drobiazgowego wyodrębniania wernakularyzmu „konserwatorskiego” oraz „interpretatywnego” neowernakularyzmu. Pierwszy z nich to jednak nic innego jak kontynuacja działań poprzednich pokoleń, to jest podtrzymywanie i wykorzystywanie tradycyjnych rozwiązań i materiałów, drugi jednak zakłada dostosowanie architektury wernakularnej do nowych funkcji i potrzeb, a tym samym czyni z niego architekturę neowernakularną. Proweniencja przeważającej części architektury wernakularnej na terenie Europy środkowej, w tym i obecnych terenów Polski, była szwajcarska (alpejska) i jej dotyczy niniejsze opracowanie. Pod koniec XIX wieku, a więc nieco później niż w przypadku alpejskiej architektury wernakularnej, nastąpił na terenie zaborów rozwój architektury podmiejskiej, realizowanej przez M. E. Andriolli’ego w okolicach Warszawy w latach 1880-1890 w ramach ruchu wilegiatury, jednak o odmiennym niż alpejski pierwowzorze. Choć miała w sobie koloryt alpejskich kurortów, czerpała wzorce raczej z architektury daczy z okolic podmoskiewskiej Wiatki, gdzie M. E. Andriolli przebywał na zesłaniu. Zakres wpływu, jaki na nią wywarła alpejska architektura wernakularna stanowi odrębne opracowanie autora.
Being on the edge of architecture created by architects, vernacular architecture always remained the margin. While it was never in collision with the main stream, it was rather an independent movement, occurring and proceeding with the rhythm and pace of its own. It is called vernacular, deriving from „vernaculus” in latin, and meaning „native”. The term does not exhaust the complexity of the issue; there is though a substantial difference between vernacular architecture, the vernacular phenomenon as such, and above all, the neovernacularism. It is assumed, that vernacular architecture means „the architecture without the architect, anonymous, arising beyond the design process, constituting part of tradition of society and being the sum of building, functional and esthetic experience that is being passed from generation upon generation”. Question is remaining, whether „arising beyond the design process” means, that vernacular architecture has aroused in the past beyond the design process. If so, it would make it vernacular. If it meant though, that architecture was being currently created without the design process, it would make it neovernacular. Polish theorists and historians recognize the problem of vernacular architecture based on different approach; Miłobędzki, A., emphasises local building tradition and the use of local building materials, as being crucial, while Fiett, J., places vernacular architecture between primitive and authorial architecture, emphasizing the aspect of copying and replicating of a specific archetype that is considered an object of art. None of the above authors regards, and even less evaluates, the absolute virtues of vernacular architecture, surprisingly at the same time considering its repetitiveness and regarding it as being equally authentic as the vernaculate original. While copying the historical origin, seen as a piece of art, vernacular architecture itself deserves no such name. With due respect for its artistic and historical values and undoubtful charm, neovernacular architecture deserves such merit even less. Simplifying matters, vernacular architecture is, by some, viewed simply equal to regional building. Based on the fact, that it constitutes a work of the authors with no academic background, it is regarded a building process that freely benefits from vernacular architecture, with no specific differentiation between conservational and interpretive neovernacularism. The first means nothing else than the continuity of action of our predecessors, i.e. the maintainance and the use of traditional building techniques and materials, the second assumes the adoption of vernacular architecture to new functions and uses, making it thus neovernacular. It is the intention of the author to show the origins of the vernacular architecture in Central Europe, including Poland, as deriving from Swiss origin.

Przyjmuje się, iż architektura ‘okresu założycieli’ – ‘Grűnderzeit’ występowała w Niemczech w latach 1870-1920, to jest dłużej niż do zakończenia I wojny światowej stanowiącej swoistą cezurę XX wieku. Na terenie Polski, w miarę rozprzestrzeniania się przychodzącego z Europy postępu technicznego, styl Grűnderzeit następował pod koniec XIX wieku z niewielkim tylko opóźnieniem w stosunku do Niemiec, a wraz z nim jeszcze 12 stylów okresu historyzmu. Budynki z okresu Grűnderzeit, powszechnie obecne w centrach polskich miast pomimo zniszczeń spowodowanych II wojną, stanowią zwykle obiekty najstarsze i choćby z tego powodu uznawane są za estetyczny kanon historycznej zabudowy mieszkaniowej. Zamiarem autora jest przywrócenie do literatury polskiej terminu Grűnderzeit jako bardziej precyzyjnie określającego styl niż termin ‘historyzm’, używany do opisania praktycznie każdej formy architektonicznej z okresu poprzedzającego modernizm. Autorowi chodzi też o spowodowanie w polskiej literaturze dekonstrukcji terminu ‘historyzm’ i wyodrębnienie z niego terminu Grűnderzeit, ponadto o rozprawienie się z funkcjonującymi na temat stylu Grűnderzeit uprzedzeniami oraz o wykazanie związków i wpływu tego stylu na architekturę tkanki miejskiej większości polskich miast, nie tylko tych położonych na zachód od Wisły. Bezrefleksyjność lub też pogląd, iż architektura z przełomu XIX i XX wieku na terenie Polski nie miała korzeni w XIX wiecznej architekturze Europy, a jeśli nawet miała, to na pewno nie były one niemieckie, w erze globalizmu która właśnie wtedy się rozpoczynała, nie wytrzymuje próby.
It is assumed, that the architecture of the ‘Age of Promotorism’, commonly called Grűnderzeit, was omnipresent in Germany in the years 1870-1920, i.e. longer than till the end of 1st World War, being the turning point of the 20th century. In Poland, Grűnderzeit style followed with only a small delay the influx and spread of technical progress and inventions from Germany. Dwellings of that time, commonly present in most Polish town centers, despite heavy demolition caused by the II World War, still constitute the oldest and most valuable part of town fabric, and are being considered the esthetic canon of historical multifamily housing relic. It is the intention of the author to deconstruct the term of ‘historism’ commonly used in Polish literature for practically any architectural form dating prior to modernism, isolating thereof the term of ‘Grűnderzeit’, and to reintroduce the meaning of Grűnderzeit as a more accurate term, based on historical background of 19th century Europe. It is also the aim to end the myths and the prejudice against the style of ‘Grűnderzeit’ viewed as unwelcomed German influence. An ungrounded belief, that the XIX century architecture in Poland had no roots in 19th century German architecture, has no reason and ground in the era of globalism.

The article shows life and creativity of Władysław Ekielski (1855-1927) as a one of the most creative architects of his age. Projects and notes unpublished so far are the basis for a more complete understanding of the architect's work. The legacy of professor Ekielski includes not only dozens of articles, designed residential buildings, but also public buildings in the city of Cracow, and on the areas of Western Galicia.
Artykuł ukazuje częściowo życie i twórczość Władysława Ekielskiego (1855-1927), jako wybitnego architekta swojej epoki. Nieopublikowane dotąd projekty i notatki są podstawą do pełniejszego zrozumienia twórczości architekta. Spuścizna po profesorze Ekielskim obejmuje nie tylko dziesiątki artykułów, zrealizowanych budynków mieszkalnych ale także obiektów użyteczności publicznej na terenie miasta Krakowa, jak również na terenach ówczesnej zachodniej Galicji.

Opis:
Analysing Franciszek Streitt's painting and the course of his carrier, one may distinguish three stages: the Cracow, Vienna, and Munich stages. His sojourn in Cracow is devoted above all to the studies of painting at the Jan Matejko and Władysław Łuszczkiewicz Art School. It is owing to Matejko that Streitt historical paintings with genre contents, e.g. The Farewell to the Son Leaving for Vienna. Władysław Łuszczkiewicz's influence can be observed in portraits, whereas Izydor Jabłoński's in religious themes. Moreover, in Cracow Streitt made friends with Antoni Kozakiewicz and Aleksander Kotsis. In 1868, Streitt and Kozakiewicz went to Vienna where they entered the Art School. In Vienna, Streitt made a cycle of paintings that referred to Adam Mickiewicz's poetry. They were the following Świtezianka, Kataryniarz [The Organ-Grinder], Czaty [The Watch], and Wojewoda [The Voivode]. He also painted historical compositions: Porwanie Halszki z Ostroga [Halszka's Abduction from Ostróg], Katarzyna Jagiellonka w Grypsholm [Katarzyna Jagiellonka in Grypsholm] (in Matejko's convention), Rekrutacja [Conscription], and Ostatnie odwiedziny [The Last Visit] (they deal with the repressions after January uprising). In 1871, he left for Munich. In the capital of Bavaria the artist came closer to Józef Brandt's group. His painting enjoyed great interest there. Many of his works were bought by Kunsttraders, and then they sold them to England and the United States. He became an ordinary member of the Munich Kunstverein in which he exhibited many of his works. He often arrived in the vicinity of Galicia and in Hungary, where he had found many themes and motifs for his painting. In Munich, he painted paintings that concerned a very broad theme, mainly genre compositions. They most important are the following cycles: wandering musicians, Gipsies, shoemaker's apprentices, beautiful aristocrats, and the compositions that exhibited poverty. Now with regard to artistic value, the most important are Na gorącym uczynku [Caught Red-Handed], W małem miasteczku [In a Small Town]. One can find in the artist's composition some influences of Maksymilian Gierymski, Antoni Kozakiewicz, Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski, and Władysław Czachórski.
