Opis:
A sound knowledge of horseshoe impact on blood flow parameters is required for making shoeing decisions and selecting the most appropriate types of shoes. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of horse shoeing with egg bar shoes and shoes with wedge pads on blood flow parameters in the lateral palmar digital artery measured by Doppler ultrasound. The study was conducted on 16 horses divided into two groups. Horses from group 1 were shod with egg bar shoes. Horses from group 2 were shod with shoes with wedge pads. Doppler ultrasound parameters of the lateral palmar digital artery at the level of the metacarpophalangeal joint were evaluated. Doppler tests were performed before and after shoeing within a monthly interval. The results of the study indicate that egg bar shoes have a greater impact on blood circulation in the distal part of the equine limb than shoes with wedge pads. However, the only parameters to have changed substantially after shoeing with egg bar shoes were end-diastolic velocity (EDV) and mean velocity (Vmn) in the lateral palmar digital artery. A low-resistance blood flow pattern was noted before shoeing. After shoeing in group 1, it remained unchanged in 5 horses, whereas a high-resistance pattern was observed in 3 animals. A low-resistance blood flow pattern was noted in all group 2 horses after shoeing. The difference between the analyzed shoeing techniques could be attributed to increased pressure in the heel bulb area in horses shod with egg bar shoes. Wedge pads shift the load away from the heel bulbs, which might reduce the pressure on the palmar digital vessels and exert a smaller influence on the parameters measured in the Doppler ultrasound test.

Opis:
Recently, the laser technology of influencing biological objects in biology, medicine, and veterinary medicine has become widespread in order to activate certain biochemical and physiological processes in the organism. Any influence of electromagnetic radiation (in particular optical emission) requires the exact adherence to the recommended illumination dose to obtain a positive effect on the biological object. The article presents the results of a theoretical study concerning provision of uniform illumination of the egg’s surface, taking into account the location of the laser radiation source and rotating time of the egg.
Ostatnio technologia laserowego oddziaływania na obiekty biologiczne w biologii, medycynie i weterynarii stała się powszechna w celu aktywacji pewnych procesów biochemicznych i fizjologicznych w organizmie. Każdy wpływ promieniowania elektromagnetycznego (w szczególności emisji optycznej) wymaga dokładnego przestrzegania zalecanej dawki oświetlenia w celu uzyskania pozytywnego wpływu na obiekt biologiczny. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań teoretycznych dotyczących zapewnienia równomiernego oświetlenia powierzchni jaja, biorąc pod uwagę lokalizację źródła promieniowania laserowego i czas obrotu jaja.

When commenting on Aristotle Ph. 1.3, 187a1, Simplicius in Ph. 1.3, 146, 29–147,2 establishes an equivalence between the shining «silver egg» (ὤεον ἀργύφεον) of Orpheus (fr. 70 Kern) and the Parmenidean being or, rather, one of the determinations with which Parmenides, in the section of his Poem devoted to the so-called Way of Truth, indicates the ἐόν, i.e., «resembling the mass of a well-rounded sphere» (εὐκύκλου σφαίρης ἐναλίγκιον ὄγκωι – DK 28 B 8.43). The equivalence established here is found in the great digression about Parmenides (in Ph. 142, 28–148, 24), where Simplicius puts forward an interpretation of Parmenides that identifies the Parmenidean being-one (τὸ ἓν ὄν) with the intelligible (τὸ νοητόν), which, in another passages of the same commentary, is also qualified with the metaphysical concept of “unified” (τὸ ἡνωμένον) that is taken from Damascius. The aim of the present paper is to trace back the Neo-Platonic assumptions of this identification. In particular, we will focus on Damascius Pr. 2.55.40, 14–19 and 3.123.160, 1–3 Westerink, since these passages contain insights into the Orphic theology that is referred to as “usual”, “common” or “rhapsodic”, as well as a contextual “translation” of various Orphic concepts (e.g. ὤεον ἀργύφεον) in terms of Neo-Platonic metaphysics. The metaphysical transposition of the mythical image of the silver egg goes back, however, to Proclus (in Ti. 1.428, 8–9), who assumes the identity between Plato’s being (“being in the primary sense”, τὸ πρώτως [...] ὄν) and the Orphic egg (ταὐτὸν τό τε Πλάτωνος ὂν καὶ τὸ Ὀρφικὸν ὠόν). One cannot, at the same time, exclude a priori the possibility that the Orphic motif of the silver egg circulated in the Magna Graecia of Parmenides already from at least the 6th century BC. It is possible, as Colli hypothesised, that already Ibycus (who certainly knew Orpheus, fr. 25 Page) betrays a certain knowledge of it in fr. 4.4–5 Page, where we find the expression ἐν ὠέωι ἀργυρέωι. This article demonstrates that Proclus and Damascius embedded the Orphic concept of ὤεον ἀργύφεον into their Neo-Platonic metaphysics by showing its potential for speculative order.

Opis:
Transport of fresh or powdered chicken eggs uses conveyors with elements made of steel or plastics, and surfaces often coated by Teflon. Various forms of eggs contact with said surfaces and are subject to friction processes between them. The frictional resistances cause a load on the devices driving the conveyors and a local and temporary increase in temperature in the contact zones and allow the abrasive wear of both the surfaces of the conveyors, packages and the eggshells themselves. This study aimed to determine such the coefficient of friction and wear intensity at various contacts. The friction and wear tests were conducted on two tribotesters and the results are shown in the article.
Transport świeżych lub sproszkowanych jaj kurzych wykorzystuje przenośniki z elementami wykonanymi ze stali lub tworzyw sztucznych, a powierzchnie często pokryte teflonem. Różne formy jaj stykają się ze wspomnianymi powierzchniami i podlegają procesom tarcia między nimi. Opory tarcia powodują obciążenie urządzeń napędzających przenośniki oraz lokalny i tymczasowy wzrost temperatury w strefach styku i pozwala na zużycie ścierne powierzchni przenośników, pakietów i samych skorupek jaj. Badanie to miało na celu określenie takiego współczynnika tarcia i intensywności zużycia w różnych stykach. Testy tarcia i zużycia przeprowadzono na dwóch tribotesterach, a wyniki pokazano w artykule.

The aim of this study was to compare the cryoprotective effects of egg yolk from different avian species (hen, goose and quail) on post-thaw quality of dog semen. Total motility (TMOT) and progressive motility (PMOT) of frozen-thawed spermatozoa were not significantly differed among the extenders, but were higher in the quail-egg yolk based extender compared with extender containing hen or goose egg yolk. It was found that post-thaw sperm motion parameters, velocity VCL and ALH, were significantly higher in the quail-egg yolk based extender. No marked differences in post-thaw sperm plasma membrane integrity (PMI) and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were observed among the extenders. In conclusion, the results of the present study suggest that goose or quail egg yolk is a suitable alternative to hen egg yolk for the cryopreservation of dog semen.

In this work the real-time control of computer games was explored by a single electrode mobile electroencephalography (EEG) device with a Bluetooth interface. The amplitude variation in the two frequency bands of 4-12 Hz and 60-200 Hz was selected as the real-time control parameter. The frequency-domain of a raw EEG signal was calculated using the discrete Fourier transform. The time-dependent signal samples equal to 512, 1024, and 2048 time points in size were used in our research. The well-known classic Pong game was used to try out our controller. The developed software handles communication with the device and real-time game rendering. The .NET Framework with the C# programming language was used as a develop-ment tool. 50 game play trials were made for each controller setup. The obtained results are promising for the possible use of the device in real-time communication with computer devices for people with hand disabilities.

The research was conducted to determine the effects of substituting raw maize with flaked maize in diets containing different levels of metabolic energy on the performance, egg quality, and serum parameters of layer quails. In the experiment, 120 female quails at ten weeks of age were randomly allocated to six treatment groups with four replicates, each consisting of five quails. The quails were fed six diets, with two forms of maize (raw or flaked) and three metabolic energy levels (2750, 2825 or 2900 (control) kcal/kg) during a ten-week trial. Compared with the control group, reducing the metabolic energy level of the diet to 2750 kcal/kg negatively affected egg production (P < 0,01), egg mass (P < 0,01), feed conversion ratio (P < 0,01), and serum cholesterol concentration (P < 0,05). Eggshell thickness decreased significantly in the group receiving 2750 kcal/kg metabolic energy in the diet, and the yolk b* value increased significantly (P < 0,01). The use of flaked maize in the diets significantly increased egg production (P < 0,05), egg mass (P < 0,05), eggshell thickness (P < 0,05), and yolk L* value (P < 0,01) and significantly decreased the feed conversion ratio (P < 0,05) and b* value of the yolk (P < 0,05). Although the effects of the interactions of the metabolic energy levels and forms of maize on the egg yolk b* value were significant (P < 0,01), this effect was not significant for the other parameters. The results indicate that layer quails can be fed diets containing 2825 kcal/kg metabolic energy and that replacement of raw maize with flaked maize in the diet positively affects performance and egg quality.

The noise pollution caused by anthropogenic activities in the aquatic environment negatively affects aquatic organisms like mammals, fish, crustaceans, and even plankton, which are important for the aquatic ecosystem. This study was conducted to examine the effect of lethal and sub-lethal effects of high-frequency sound exposure on Daphnia magna aiming to obtain more detailed scientific information. For this purpose, a total of 150 gynandromorphic daphnids were randomly selected, sorted equally into 440 Hz, 432 Hz, and control groups, and high-frequency sounds were applied in aquatic conditions. During the 35-day trial period, the heartbeats, and egg numbers were counted whereas the survival rates were recorded. The results showed that the high-frequency sound exposure immediately showed its detrimental effect on heartbeats after a short adaptation period in the 440 Hz group and the average values decreased to half of the normal values. In the 432 Hz group, heartbeats first increased, and this level was maintained for a while, but then a significant decrease was observed. Regarding the egg numbers, an increasing trend was observed in the 432 Hz group until the 5th measurement period which resulted in a sharp decrease. In the 440 Hz group, lower values with almost no increase were recorded, except for the first measurement period, but no eggs were found in the 55th measurement. Interestingly, while no death was noted during the measurement periods, no living daphnia was observed in the 440 Hz group within 2 weeks during the non-measurement period. As a result, it was understood that Daphnia perceives the vibrations produced by high-frequency sound in the aquatic environment as a stressor and cannot cope with its detrimental effects after a certain time depending on intensity and duration. While the 440 Hz frequency noise caused infertility, the 432 Hz frequency noise resulted in lower egg numbers and heartbeats.

Egg yolk and margarine are commonly applied in starchy food processing as a lipid source. Both may affect the starch properties to different extent. Therefore, the effects of adding egg yolk (0.3, 1.0, and 1.7 g/100 g of flour) and margarine (1, 3, and 5 g/100 g of flour) to banana flour on the complex formation of gelatinized starch–lipid and on paste functional properties were investigated in this study. Native banana flour was used as a control. The complexing index (CI) value increased with the increasing egg yolk or margarine content in the paste. Egg yolk lipids formed complexes with flour starch more favorably than margarine lipids. The heat-moisture treatment (HMT) of banana flour increased its ability to form a complex. Complex formation may partly affect the swelling volume (SV) and freeze-thaw stability (FTS) of pastes. The decrease in SV was smaller in the paste with egg yolk than with margarine. Egg yolk also led to a lesser syneresis and solubility than margarine. For freeze-thaw stability, the interplay roles between the reducing effect of lipid addition and the increasing effect of HMT led to an increased syneresis suggesting that HMT factor prevailed. The reducing effect of lipid addition on egg yolk complex solubility predominated the increasing impact of HMT. Lipid source did not affect pasting properties except set back viscosity. HMT-pretreatment played a major role in the alteration of pasting properties compared to the lipid content.

Tradycja tworzenia pisanek krzczonowskich jest unikatową częścią niematerialnego dziedzictwa kulturowego, zaś zachowane pisanki to część materialnego dziedzictwa. Od niepamiętnych czasów były wykonywane techniką batiku. Mimo wielu zmian kulturowych i społecznych, do dzisiaj są wykonywane na terenie Krzczonowa i okolic, i nie tylko. W artykule mówione zostają najważniejsze elementy sztuki pisankarskiej, technika, ornamentyka oraz problematyka twórców. Przedstawione są także pewne zwyczaje związane z pisankami i ich pochodzenie, a także ich dawna i obecna rola w kulturze Krzczonowa, jak i całej Polski. Całość zostaje uzupełniona rysunkami oraz zdjęciami zachowanych pisanek.
Easter eggs from Krzczonów are a piece of tangible heritage of Poland, while manual skills of folk artists is a part of intangible heritage. Easter eggs have been made using the batik technique for an oblivious time. Despite many cultural and social changes, they are still performed in and around Krzczonów. The article discusses the most important elements of the art of writing Easter eggs, techniques, ornaments and the issues of the creators. There are also some customs related to Easter eggs and their origins, as well as their past and present role in the culture of Krzczonów and the whole of Poland. The article is supplemented with drawings and photos of Easter eggs.
