Opis:
The family represents a fundamental social unit, consisting of individuals connected by marital and parental bonds. The relations between family members are determined by traditions handed down by means of upbringing, which, in turn, is based on shared emotions and attitudes subjected to the laws and moral order of nature. The prerogatives recognised by the family are also heavily affected by religious axioms. Generally speaking, the family represents the cultural legacy of whole generations falling under the influence of numerous factors, each of them being a link in the family’s history. The analysis of the function of the family as a fundamental social group and of parental responsibility indicates that the functions of the family are more extensive than the functions of parental responsibility. This is because the functions of the family are fulfilled by all its members, adults and minors alike. Those functions performed by adult family members are subject to a number of norms included in the Family and Guardianship Code. However, the family’s desired performance positively affects fulfilment of parental responsibility.

Introduction. There are reports in literature which indicate the connection between impacted third molars and occurrence of symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunctions and headaches. Objectives. The aim of this study was evaluation of the outcome of patients who reported specific symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunction and had impacted mandibular third molars. Materials and method. The research material consisted of 10 women who reported to the Department of Craniomandibular Disfunctions of the Medical University in Lublin, Poland, with pain and acoustic symptoms in the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area. During preliminary therapy, the patients used a silicone occlusal device; ionotherapy was ordered and the patients were recommended to eliminate parafunctions. Results. Clicks before treatments were present in 6 patients, after treatment with silicone occlusal device and ionotherapy with Profenid gel in 5 patients, while two years after extraction of the impacted teeth the clicks were no longer present, and differences in the presence of clicks analyses by means of the Q-Cochran test were statistically significant between examinations 1m vs.3 (Q=10.33; p<0.01) and examinations 2 vs.3 (Q=8.40; p<0.05). Conclusions. The study showed that extraction of the mandibular third molars can cause regression of some symptoms of craniomandibular disorders.

Opis:
The ability to spatially localize sound sources is an important element of human safety in the occupational environment; it makes people able to determine the distance between places and the direction of sound. Such ability is vastly reduced for people with a hearing dysfunction. One method for improving this, is to modify the acoustic parameters of workplaces. This article describes research methodology, a test stand and preliminary research results providing means for a quantitative evaluation of the ability to localize sound sources by people with a hearing dysfunction.

Opis:
There is growing evidence that endothelial dysfunction, which is often defined as the decreased endothelial-derived nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, is a crucial factor leading to vascular disease states such as hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart failure and cigarette smoking. This is due to the fact that the lack of NO in endothelium-dependent vascular disorders contributes to impaired vascular relaxation, platelet aggregation, increased vascular smooth muscle proliferation, and enhanced leukocyte adhesion to the endothelium. During the last several years, it has become clear that reduction of NO bioavailability in the endothelium-impaired function disorders is associated with an increase in endothelial production of superoxide (O2̇̄). Because O2̇̄ rapidly scavenges NO within the endothelium, a reduction of bioactive NO might occur despite an increased NO generation. Among many enzymatic systems that are capable of producing O2̇̄, NAD(P)H oxidase and uncoupled endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) apparently are the main sources of O2̇̄ in the endothelial cells. It seems that O2̇̄ generated by NAD(P)H oxidase may trigger eNOS uncoupling and contribute to the endothelial balance between NO and O2̇̄. That is maintained at diverse levels.

Endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) dysfunction is defined as weak function and lowered number of endothelial precursors with pro-angiogenic phenotypes that are imbedded in vascular integrity maintenance, angiogenesis, and vascular reparation. There is large body of evidence that deficiency of EPC number in peripheral blood is considered as a marker of endothelial dysfunction, which is established risk factor and player in pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Moreover, recent clinical studies have shown that circulating EPCs had demonstrated vascular protection in several vascular diseases including pulmonary hypertension. However, the role of EPCs in pathogenesis chronic obstructive pulmonary disease bronchial asthma, emphysema appeared to be uncertain. The short communication is dedicated the controversies in abilities of EPCs to have tissue protective and play a pivotal role in nature evolution of pulmonary disease.

Opis:
The rate at which students are dropping out of schools in recent time is worrisome and it calls for serious interventions from educational stakeholders. Education is very expedient for the development of an individual as well as that of any society that aspires to be relevant in the 21st century. Education, at all levels, is associated with a set of positive factors for work life, social and personal wellbeing as well as the improvement of the economy of any nation. It can then be deduced that education is sine qua non to the development of an individual and that of any nation. Dropping out of school is not only detrimental to the individual but also increases the likelihood of unemployment, violence activities, kidnapping thuggery, armed robbery and other social vices. This study, therefore, investigated the influence of family dysfunction and emotional intelligence on school dropout intention among police officers’ children in Lagos state. This study employed a survey research design. The study made use of simple random sampling technique. Two hundred and twenty (220) respondents comprising 98 males and 122 females from two police secondary schools in Lagos state were used for the study. Three Standardised instruments were used in collection of data for the study. These are: School dropout intention scale (alpha = .84) family dysfunction scale (alpha = 0.85) and emotional intelligence scale a = .88). Data from the study were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and multiple regression analysis (ANOVA). The result revealed that the two independent variables had significant relationship with dropout intention among police officers’ children. Family dysfunction (r = .902, p < .05), emotional intelligence (r = .383, p < .05. Also, the two factors jointly contributed 41.2% of the variance to dropout intention among the police officers’ children.(Adj. R2 = .412) In terms of magnitude of contribution, family dysfunction made the most significant contribution (Beta = .223, t = 2.429, p < 0.05) followed by emotional intelligence (Beta = .106, t = 2.115, p < 0.05) Based on these findings, the study concluded that dropout intentions of police officers’ children are determined by family dysfunction as well as emotional intelligence. Recommendations and suggestions were offered to various significant stakeholders.

Purpose: Since endothelial dysfunction can develop early in the adulthood, the purpose of the study was to determine how serum lipids, body measures and dietary habits affect serum markers of vascular activation in young women. Materials and methods: Twenty five healthy women, aged 19-22 years, were enrolled in the study. Serum lipids profile (total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides) was assayed with laboratory test kits. Concentrations of sICAM-1, sVCAM-1 and E-selectin were determined with the ELISA technique. Anthropometric measurements were taken including skinfold thickness and waist circumference. Food consumption data were collected using 3 repeats of 24-hour dietary recalls. Dietary habits of the women were assessed with a 9-point alternate Mediterranean Diet score (a-MED). Results: Sixty eight percent of the subjects had their HDL-cholesterol levels below the desirable concentration, 20% had LDL-cholesterol elevated, and 32% demonstrated increased total triacylglycerols (TAG). The levels of serum TAG >199 mg/dL were associated with a significant rise in the VCAM-1 concentration. Dietary wholegrain products seem to reduce the serum E-selectin. Conclusions: The results suggest that young women of normal body mass, but demonstrating increased levels of serum TAG, may be at risk of developing endothelial dysfunction. An implementation of the wholegrain products consumption into their dietary practices would possibly be of health benefit.
