Opis:
Archaeological remains excavated by the Polish–Slovak Archaeological Mission in Tell el-Retaba can be well dated to the New Kingdom till the Late Period. During the 2012 season domestic layers from the Hyksos period were found, indicating that the site was occupied for the first time around the end of the Thirteenth and beginning of the Fifteenth Dynasties. Next to the houses three Hyksos graves were found. Archaeological work also revealed houses from the early Eighteenth Dynasty located just above the Hyksos structures in Area 7. Very interesting material came from the late Twentieth Dynasty and Third Intermediate Period houses excavated in Area 9. Rich pottery assemblages mostly of domestic character have been recovered from all of the structures.

Opis:
A study of coin output in Egypt during the Flavian dynasty (AD 69–96) brings to light a dichotomy in circulation between billon tetradrachms and low denomination bronze coins. The composition of hoards with Flavian silver issues suggests minimal coin production due to a sufficient quantity of Nero’s tertadrachms on the market. However, stray finds of coins from the Flavian dynasty consist mainly of bronze issues, apparently outnumbering Nero’s low-denomination coin output. A tempting idea to consider is that the low number of Flavian silver coins in circulation resulted in an extended production of bronze issues.

Opis:
The mostly intact Twenty-fifth Dynasty qrsw-coffin sets of Heresenes and the Montu priests Padiamunet (iii) and Nespaqashuty (vi) were discovered on the Upper Terrace at Deir el-Bahari by Émile Baraize in 1932–1933, but were never fully studied or published. The Twenty-second Dynasty intact cartonnage of the Hsyt n Xnw n imn Shaamunimes (Cairo TR 21.11.16.5) was purchased in Gurna in 1893, said to come from Sheikh Abd el-Gurna. Other coffin and cartonnage fragments belonging to the Montu priests and Hsyt n Xnw n imn were found in recent excavations on the upper terrace of the Hatshepsut temple. This paper outlines the development of a necropolis particularly favored by the Montu priests in the Hatshepsut temple and the area east of it. It describes the qrsw-coffin sets from the Baraize find and discusses the identity of several Hsyt n Xnw n imn, named Shaamunimes, from the Twenty-second to the Twenty-fifth Dynasty.

Opis:
Vietnamese blue and white ware has recently become an object of scientific scholarly interest. In the beginning, this kind of pottery was overshadowed by Chinese products, but later on it experienced a boom in the 15th and 16th centuries. In this paper, I analyse the development of ceramics on the territory of modern Vietnam, including its shape, decorative motifs and ornament symbolism while focusing on the unique national character of this category of products. Despite strong Chinese influences which are clearly visible in the technological borrowings and symbolism of depictions, Vietnamese pottery shows a skilful mixture of tradition and foreign inspirations. Unlike their Chinese counterparts, Vietnamese painting styles clearly give the Vietnamese pottery of this period a unique, individual form. The blue and white vessels are no longer copies or imitations but local products of high artistic value.

The 2017 season of archaeological excavation at the site of Tell el-Retaba in the Nile Delta in Egypt led to several interesting discoveries. Two of these concerned burials: a Hyksos tomb from the Second Intermediate Period, robbed but with some remains of the original furnishings, and pit burials from the early Eighteenth Dynasty, one of which was richly endowed with silver jewelry. Meriting note is the discovery of moats belonging to the defenses of the Nineteenth Dynasty fortress. Exploration of a crowded Third Intermediate Period settlement was continued.

The text catalogues the best preserved pieces of coffins and cartonnages excavated from the burials made on the Third Terrace of the Temple of Hatsheput in the Third Intermediate Period when the ruins were used as a burial ground for noblemen, in particular the family of Vizier Padiamunet. Hundreds of fragments were found since the 1930s (not all have survived and the fragmentation and mixing of the finds make it a very difficult material to study). On typological and epigraphic grounds the remains were assigned to the third part of the Twenty-second and the larger part of the Twenty-fifth Dynasties.

Opis:
For many centuries, the Piast dynasty maintained wide contacts with the ruling courts of Europe. The representatives of the Piast dynasty had many opportunities to gain social and foreign language skills but also to participate in organised forms of education. The Piasts’ education was complemented by scientific trips, undertaken by numerous princes in such form as pilgrimages and crusades. The aim of the paper is to present a group of descendants of Mieszko I and Doubravka of Bohemia, living in the period from the 10th to the beginning of the 17th century, who started their careers at European universities. With time and with the intellectual development of Europe, the model of educating princes and kings became a permanent part of the model of schooling, which was associated with the increasing number of stays of the Piasts at European universities.

Opis:
On the inner north wall of the Southern Room of Amun in the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari there is a depiction of the so-called frieze of objects, arranged in two rows. In the upper one vessels with oils containing four out of the so-called seven sacred oils and ʿntjw were located. It can be observed that in the sequence of the oils from the ‘seven sacred oils’, the third one – sft – has been replaced by ʿntjw and the two last oils are not depicted at all. In this paper the possible reasons for such a replacement as well as the role of both aromatic substances in the temple ritual in the early Eighteenth Dynasty are examined.
