This article analyses the furniture created in Lithuania during the interwar period. Today, from a time perspective, we can shed light on the development of furniture making, with the aim to reveal the furniture designers and the particular interiors where this kind of furniture became popular, as well as the styles that influenced them. In this paper, the author mostly describes artistic designs for secular interiors. The selection was based on the fact that this furniture best reflects the prevailing tendencies when it comes to design during a particular period. After independence was restored to Lithuania, the design of produced furniture became more modern and similar to that of Western Europe. This was caused by the educative propaganda in the media and the new generation of architects and artists who had graduated from universities in western countries. The new, rational construction of houses where all the free rooms were usually rented during the crisis caused demand of space-saving furniture. The architects usually designed both buildings and the built-in furniture with that concept in mind. Architects attempted to tailor built-in furniture to the user’s needs and financial capabilities in the most optimal way. Built-in modular storage systems, kitchen cupboards, and bookshelves were conceived as architectural components. They were used to divide and to model the space. The small living space required the number of furniture pieces to be reduced. That is why unit furniture became the second-most trending innovation during the interwar period. The combination of wardrobes, bookcases, and sideboards into one piece was the most popular modular unit furniture. Tables with shelves and couches with consoles were also popular examples of space-saving furniture. These modern innovations of furniture were made in art déco style since the late 1920s. The search for Lithuanian national style was particularly relevant in the interwar period and design was used as an instrument for political purpose. This is obviously prevalent in the furniture of representation interiors. Leading architects like Vytautas Landsbergis-Zemkalnis, Bronius Elsbergas, and Arnas Funkas, and also some popular artists such as Jonas Prapuolenis, Antanas Gudaitis, and Gerardas Bagdonavicius, designed not only furniture innovations but also furniture in the Lithuanian national style as part of their representative-interior projects. Country-wide Lithuanian exhibitions and presentations abroad were also dominated by the Lithuanian national style, propagated by the authorities. Interpretations of ethnic furniture decor and forms, as well as national symbols became dominant in all Lithuanian-national-style furniture.

The text aims to describe currents, tendencies and fields of interest in design history studies in Poland, which grew in number around the year 2000. There are several characteristic patterns to be observed. First of all, despite the fact that the pioneering monograph on the subject appeared in 1978 (I. Huml), one can still observe terminological diversity, with various terms, such as applied arts and design, being used as synonyms. Secondly, looking at the history of the research, one may draw up a calendar of key events (publications, exhibitions) which led to the development and/or consolidation of the basic vision of Polish design from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century, related primarily to the political and artistic history of the country. Thirdly, the increase in historical knowledge on the subject has been generated not only by different environments but also in the context of diverse institutions (academic and museum research, art market, collecting/connoisseurship). Consequently, the research conducted so far has been methodologically diversified, influenced by different goals and results. As a result, in the social reception there is a specific coexistence of projects of a scientific, popular science and commercial nature. A critical point in the dynamics of research was marked by two events which took place at the beginning of the 21st century: the exhibition Rzeczy pospolite and the subsequent publication (2000/2001), and founding of the quarterly “2+3D” (2001). Another marked increase in initiatives has occurred since the end of the 2000s. The demand for knowledge about design history is also, to some extent, animated by the art market. On the one hand, old design collecting generates a spontaneous exchange of messages on social media, while on the other, it stimulates the creation of reliable popular science studies. Research on Polish design has been dominated by the perspective of art history, usually in its traditional version focusing on style as well as the artistic and theoretical context, and highlighting issues of uniqueness and individual authorship, which prevail over functional, technological or social aspects in the discourse. Consequently, there has been no approach that would perceive Polish design and its multiple contexts as a dynamic system, a set of practices and mediations, such as the approach proposed several years ago by Grace Lees-Maffei (Production-Consumption-Mediation Paradigm) for design history. Such a perspective would enhance and stress the importance of research on the relations between various actors in the Polish design community, such as institutions (educational, experimental and research, manufacturing), transmitters (exhibitions, advice) and mediators between production and consumption.

Polish-born, Milan-based designer, Dorota Koziara has been active on the international design scene for two decades. Her artistic career has swung between her national roots and the well-established traditions of Italian design. Working alongside the iconic Alessandro Mendini, Koziara gained a brand-new way of self-expression, smoothly intermingling between the two cultures. Her activity covers an outstanding range of projects, she is also the winner of the Third Millennium International Sculpture Competition held in Italy. Her achievements on both Polish and Italian design scenes are a unique example of how fluid contemporary trends based on national heritage can be. In this border-free society, the influences and relations between Polish and Italian design seem to be highly important. After centuries of inspiration and domination by Italian art, today’s scene shows a different approach to multicultural dialogue, the results of which are apparent in Koziara’s works. The article focuses on her achievements in the light of reciprocal Polish-Italian influences.

typographic design, the history of book, the art of printing
Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to present the problem of typographic design in the studies on Polish books printed until the 18th century. Although some of the ideas of Polish bibliologists have closely corresponded with new directions in French and Anglo-American bibliography, they have never resulted in such books as: Apparition du livre by Febvre-Martin, Gutenberg Galaxy by McLuhan, Printing Press as an Agent of Change by Eisenstein or Histoire de l’édition française. In Polish book studies, the issue of typography was raised essentially to confirm or establish the provenance of a print or to demonstrate the existence of many variants of an edition. In the second decade of the 20th century, in opposition to the ideas represented e.g. by Jan Ptaśnik, who postulated mainly the examination of historical documents, Kazimierz Piekarski worked out the so-called “typographic method” of book studies, which consisted in the analysis, description and creating the catalogue of printing types and typographic material employed in the examined prints. This method was successfully used in the series Polonia Typographica Saeculi Sedecimi, which Piekarski initialised in 1936. While the idea to evaluate and compare the aesthetic value of production of different printers were present in Polish bibliography, they could not, nevertheless, be realised before the second world war. In the second half of the 20th century researchers focused, among others questions, on: paper, bookbinding, readers, publicity, musical prints, bookselling, history of libraries and printers, but the issue of typographic design was only discussed as an exception. Making an attempt to characterise and estimate the visual aspect of Polish books printed before the end of the 18th century requires difficult study not only in bibliography, but also in the history of literature, culture and art. Works such as: Encyklopedia wiedzy o książce, Słownik pracowników książki polskiej,Drukarze dawnej Polski, a recently published bibliography of books printed by Franciszek Cezary the older, as well as already mentioned Polonia Typographica... and numerous articles (some of them concerning precisely e.g. title-pages or printers’ devices) remain a useful source of knowledge. However, Polish scientific vocabulary in this subject is still deficient and sometimes a researcher could find it indispensable to create a new term him- or herself. The author of this paper had a similar experience during her studies on the typography of prints published in sixteenth-century Cracow by Florian Ungler and Maciej Wirzbięta. The other problem she had to deal with was the creation of an original database, which allowed her to collect, research and present data in a much simpler, faster and more comfortable way. Comparative studies of selected prints published in Cracow in the first and the second half of the 16th century have shown a development of local typography and book design during this period, including changes in book architecture, typographic material and page layout. They also indicated the introduction and perfection of multiple helpful elements of a book, like pagination or foliation, indexes, errata, notes etc., as well as an establishment of some patterns of composition for editions de luxe and “series”. Despite many attempts, including those mentioned in this paper, the issue of typographic design of Polish books printed before the 18th century remains mostly unknown. Simultaneously, the general interest in modern book design in Poland has greatly increased over the last few years and creating the layout of one’s own book has become more and more popular. It is therefore extremely important to study the art of our predecessors and try to understand what they wanted to teach us in their own language of “black-art”.

Global and digital connectivity transform Australian classrooms by creating rich environments for inquiry learning. Developing inquiry learning in this Information Communication Technology (ICT) context is an Australian educational goal. Recently the Australian Curriculum reform and the Digital Education Revolution has become a catalyst for teachers to overcome the ubiquitous disconnect between traditional and digital pedagogies and reconceptualise practice and curricula. The National vision for ICT in School Education (2008) creates opportunities and imperatives for transformative pedagogies to sync with key learning areas and raises questions about how ICT pedagogical disconnect may be overcome. This paper reports findings from multi-site case studies which focus on the bridging the pedagogical disconnect by investigating the ICT experiences and pedagogy of History teachers in K-12 Catholic schools.

The article touches upon the question of the history of Polish industrial design. It analyses its genesis since the second half of the nineteenth century as well as the crucial problem of how ‘Polish’ and nationally rooted were, in fact, the forms presented by the Polish designers at the time. Further reflections on the topic show two main tendencies – inspirations emerging from folk art and the search for modernity (characteristic of the entire European design during the period). Both tendencies are still present in Polish design.

Opis:
Znane i sprawdzone są dobre praktyki projektowania baz danych. Jednak w przypadku gdy baza danych musi gromadzić pełną historię zmian danych, wykonanie projektu bazy danych staje się zdecydowanie trudniejsze. Uwzględnienie aspektów temporalnych ze swej natury zamienia związki pomiędzy powiązanymi obiektami na związki pomiędzy stanami tych obiektów. Dodatkowo, możliwość różnej interpretacji zależności czasowych powoduje, że nie wypracowano jeszcze ogólnie przyjętej metodyki projektowania temporalnych baz danych. Artykuł jest pierwszym z serii artykułów podsumowujących doświadczenia Autora zdobyte w ramach prac nad systemem Centralnej Ewidencji Pojazdów i Kierowców (CEPiK). W artykule przedstawiono sposób podejścia do projektowania relacyjnej bazy danych przechowującej pełną historię zmian stanów obiektów. Opisano model bazy danych, szczegółowo wyjaśniono wpływ zmian stanów obiektów na historię życia obiektów oraz zaprezentowano algorytmy operacji zapisu zmieniających stan bazy. Przedstawione podejście zostało praktycznie wykorzystane do budowy jednej z baz danych CEPiK.
Good database design practices are well-known and proven. However, when a particular base has to include also a complete history of changes introduced to the data, the project realization becomes a much more complex task. If we take into account temporal aspects, we naturally transform the relations between the interlinked objects into the relationships between the states of these objects. Additionally, the possibility of various interpretations of time dependencies prevented us so far from developing a generally accepted methodology for designing temporal databases. This article is the first in a series of articles published within the framework of the work carried out on the system of the Central Register of Vehicles and Drivers (in Polish: CEPiK). It presents the approach to the design of a relational database, which stores a complete history of the changes made to the states of these objects. It describes a database model, which explains in detail the influence of the changes made to the states of these objects, whilst also containing the life history of these objects and presents algorithms of the right operation modifying the state of the database. The presented approach has been used in practice to create one of CEPiK’s databases.

Dzięki zachowanym austriackim mapom wojskowym z XVIII i XIX wieku istnieje możliwość zbadania zmian przestrzennych, jakie miały miejsce m.in. na terenach Polski południowej.
Owing to preserved Austrian military maps from the 18th and 19th century, there is a possibility to examine spatial changes that occurred e.g. in southern Poland. Particularly valuable is the so called Mieg’s map – drawn in the scale 1:28800 (one inch = 400 fathoms), covering the area of the Austrian Empire which at that time stretched from Venice to Warsaw. The map constitutes an excellent basis and a springboard for the research on the history of urban design which has not been studied in-depth so far. This article is an addition to few texts of that kind.
