Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to identify different motives that drive the customer and methods of practical implementation of the 5Rs rule. The author’s considerations start with the concept of customer value. Then, the author describes threats of overconsumption as well as the concept of de-consumption. De-consumption is defined as voluntary, it is not considered as the result of poverty. In the next part of the paper, different types of motivation are identified (e.g. proactive vs. reactive, egocentric vs. altruistic). The core part of the paper consists of the analysis of 5Rs and their interrelations. Finally, the author has identified the main challenges created by de-consumption for marketers. The paper is conceptual, and it is based on an extensive literature review.

The Philosopher’s Diet in Porphyry’s De Abstinentia: Characterizing a Historical Legacy of Minimalism in Food Consumption

Opis:
Historical legacy, as an important constituent for the evaluation of the extent to which the past influences the present, sheds much light on some of the broader issues of the relation between the past and the present. One of the components of historical legacy is human food consumption habits. The domain of food consumption habits, in traditional Greek and Roman culture, contains a fairly noticeable diversity as it fluctuates between what seems to be two wide poles of dietary practices such as a simple diet, with the focus on minimalism and health and a luxury diet, with the focus on excess and extravagance. These poles, upon close analysis, have determined the dietary customs of antiquity while also formed a gastronomic identity. The impact of this historical legacy seems to have not only flavored Porphyry’s discussion of the nature of the philosopher’s diet in On Abstinence from Killing Animals but has also served in characterizing an advanced stage of minimalism in Greek and Roman food consumption habits.

Opis:
Human survival depends on the continuous supply of energy the demand of which has been steadily increasing. Sharp rises in fuel prices have had major repercussions on the economies of the countries with the greatest energy dependence, and make it imperative to change the attitudes and practices in business and social circles. Today, the problem involves meeting energy needs without negatively affecting the environment, as well as ensuring the wellbeing of current and future generations (sustainable development). The promotion of alternative energy is one of the priorities of the energy and environmental policy of European Union, since it is a decisive factor in reducing greenhouse gases, thus enabling compliance with the Paris agreement. In this work, the contribution of the photovoltaic systems installed for self-consumption in the headquarters of the parish council of São Bartolomeu de Messines, Algarve, Portugal, was assessed. The results indicate that a system with an installed capacity of 6 kW, requiring an investment around 10 000 €, could achieve its economic pay-back in 6.7 years, contributing to a reduction of the annual electricity bill in the building by 60%.

Opis:
Efficient air-cooling systems for hot climatic conditions, such as southern Europe, are required in the context of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings. Regenerative indirect evaporative coolers, RIEC, and desiccant regenerative indirect evaporative coolers, DRIEC, could be considered an innovative alternative to direct expansion conventional systems, DX. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the seasonal performance of three air-cooling systems in terms of thermal comfort, air quality and energy consumption in a standard classroom. Several energy simulations were carried out to evaluate these indexes in the climate zone of Lampedusa, in Mediterranean area, by using European Standards. The simulations were based on experimentally validated models. DRIEC system was the recommended system to serve a standard classroom in terms of thermal comfort and RIEC system in terms of air quality and energy consumption. DX system achieved similar comfort favourable conditions to DRIEC system. However, it always worked in III unfavourable category of air quality and consumed three times more than RIEC and DRIEC systems.

The human-centric nature of environmental thinking is a highly successful adaptation, which has biological, historical, cultural origins. The dichotomy of anthropocentrism and ecocentrism are what ultimately determine ecological attitudes. This nationally representative study presents how students in Hungarian environmental education bachelor programs view the human’s taxonomic position in the world (hierarchies, kinship), throughout evolution (determining possible directions, distancing from other organisms), the role of human power, and our rights of intervention in the environment. It shows what kind of knowledge students arrive with from public education, how they think about handling confl icts, and what impact their acquired knowledge during university years has on their environmental attitudes. It was found that at least two-thirds of students evaluated natural environmental processes, problemsand their consequences with anthropocentric preferences – in contrast to scientifi cally accepted theses.
