Opis:
The problem of numerical simulation of the material interface response under monotonic and cyclic loading is of fundamental scientific and engineering importance. In fact, such interfaces occur in most engineering and geotechnical structures. The present work is devoted to the deformational response analysis of contact interfaces under monotonic and cyclic loads. The class of materials includes rock and structural joints, soil structure interfaces, masonry and cementitious joints, localized shear bands and so on. The aim of the proposed model is to simulate the cyclic shear test under constant normal load. The associated dilatancy effect is associated with the configurational effects of asperity interaction or dilatancy of wear debris layer. The large primary asperities are assumed as responsible for interfacial dilation and small size asperities as governing frictional sliding and hysteresis response. The elliptic loading yield function is assumed to translate and rotate during progressive or reverse loading events. The model formulation is discussed and confronted with experimental data.

Opis:
We consider the existence of optimal shapes in a context of the thermo-mechanical system of partial differential equations (PDE) using the recent approach based on elliptic regularity theory (Gottschalk and Schmitz, 2015; Agmon, Douglis and Nirenberg, 1959,1964; Gilbarg and Trudinger, 1977). We give an extended and improved definition of the set of admissible shapes based on a class of sufficiently differentiable deformation maps applied to a baseline shape. The obtained set of admissible shapes again allows to prove a uniform Schauder estimate for the elasticity PDE. In order to deal with thermal stress, a related uniform Schauder estimate will be derived for the heat equation. Special emphasis is put on Robin boundary conditions, which are motivated by the convective heat transfer processes. It is shown that these thermal Schauder estimates can serve as an input to the Schauder estimates for the elasticity equation (Gottschalk and Schmitz, 2015). This is needed to prove the compactness of the (suitably extended) solutions of the entire PDE system in some state space that carries a C2-Hölder topology for the temperature field and a C3-Hölder topology for the displacement. From this, one obtains the property of graph compactness, which is the essential tool to prove the existence of optimal shapes. Due to the topologies employed, the method works for objective functionals that depend on the displacement and its derivatives up to third order, as well as on the temperature field and its derivatives up to second order. This general result in shape optimization is then applied to the problem of optimal reliability, i.e. the problem of finding shapes that have minimal failure probability under cyclic thermomechanical loading.

Opis:
This paper presents original results of triaxial experiments performed at a cyclically changed pore pressure (intrinsic cyclic loading). The results display unusual behaviour of saturated sand subjected to such atypical loading. Some features of this behaviour are shown, including the following effects: static liquefaction of initially contractive sand, apparent creep of initially dilative sand, initial anisotropy, etc. Some differences between the classical geotechnical understanding of the effects of external cyclic loadings (such as earthquakes) and those caused by intrinsic cyclic loadings (such as wave-induced pressures) are discussed.

Opis:
The experimental results dealing with the cyclic loading of sand samples in triaxial conditions are presented. These results show the development of both the volumetric and deviatoric permanent strains due to a large number of loading cycles. The analysis of experimental data has led to the formulation of semi-empirical constitutive equations, expressed in the incremental form, for these strains as functions of the cyclic shear stress amplitude, number of loading cycles and the initial stress state, around which the cyclic shearing takes place.

Three melts of ferrite-pearlitic nodular cast iron with different charge composition were used for fatigue tests. Wöhler fatigue curves and fatigue strength were obtained, and microstructure and fracture surfaces were investigated. The aim of the paper is to determine the influence of charge composition on microstructure, mechanical and fatigue properties of synthetic nodular cast irons and their micromechanisms of failure. Fatigue tests were realised at low frequency sinusoidal cyclic push-pull loading (stress ratio R = −1) at ambient temperature (T = 20 ±5°C). They were carried out with using the fatigue experimental machine Zwick/Roell Amsler 150HFP 5100 at frequency f ≈ 120 Hz. The results of fatigue tests at low frequency cyclic loading are compared with fatigue properties at high frequency cyclic loadin.

Opis:
Strength and durability of thin-walled structures are usually calculated with the use of computer simulations. To perform such simulations using Finite Element Method, characteristics of a material subjected to monotonic tension or compression and tension-compression cyclic loading are necessary. Experimental determination of such kind of characteristics is usually performed on specimens cut out from a metal or composite thin sheet. Problems associated with testing on flat specimens under large deformation are discussed in this paper. A new design of fixture proposed by the authors for this kind of testing is shortly described. The results of investigations carried out on brass using the new fixture for flat specimens testing are also presented.

Effect of structure of laminated wood on bending strength after cyclic loading. Laminated wood is particularly suitable for the production of seating and bedding furniture, for its suitable properties. The work is focused on the changes of the bending properties of laminated wood from beech and poplar veneers after its dynamic loading by cyclic bending. As we increase the number of cycles, we notice a decrease in flexural strength, a slight increase in flexural modulus, and a decrease in the number of cycles. Also the increase in the minimum bending radius as well as the flexural coefficient.

Opis:
The article focuses on the analysis of the internal damping changes depending on the amplitude of the magnesium alloy AZ31. Internal damping reflects the ability of the material irreversibly dissipating mechanical energy oscillations. It means that the material of high internal damping ability is able to significantly reduce the vibration amplitude. Internal damping is, generally, dependent on many factors (temperature, material purity, grain size, mechanical and thermal processing, etc.) and its value is determined by interactions between various mechanisms dissipation of mechanical energy. Ultrasonic resonance method was used in experimental measurements, which is based on continuous excitation of oscillations of the specimen, and the entire apparatus vibrates at a frequency which is near to the resonance. Starting resonance frequency for all measurements was about f = 20470 Hz.

Opis:
The subject of the paper comprises tests of cohesive soil subjected to low-frequency cyclic loading with constant strain amplitude. The main aim of the research is to define a failure criteria for cohesive soils subjected to this type of load. Tests of undrained cyclic shear were carried out in a triaxial apparatus on normally consolidated reworked soil samples made of kaolinite clay from Tułowice. Analysis of the results includes the influence of number of load cycles on the course of effective stress paths, development of excess pore water pressure and stress deviator value. Observed regularities may seem surprising. The effective stress path initially moves away from the boundary surface and only after a certain number of load-unload cycles change of its direction occurs and it starts to move consequently towards the surface. At the same time, it has been observed that pore water pressure value decreases at the beginning and after few hundred cycles increases again. It is a typical behaviour for overconsolidated soil, while test samples are normally consolidated. Additionally, a similar change in deviator stress value has been observed – at first it decreases and later, with subsequent cycles, re-increases.

The paper presents experimental results of investigations carried out on the 2024 aluminium alloy and P91 steel under biaxial stress state. The loading programme comprised a monotonic tension assisted by torsion-reverse-torsion cycles. An influence of the cyclic loading and its delay with respect to uniaxial tension on the selected mechanical parameters taken on the basis of tensile characteristics was investigated. Additionally, a relative variation of the proportional limit and yield point due to the loading history applied was analyzed. A permanency of effects observed during combination of tension and cyclic torsion was experimentally assessed on the basis of an initial yield surface evolution.
