    This paper analyzes cultural metaphors of emotions related to traditional healing in two Bantu languages, Swahili and Zulu, considering the relationship between language and cultural conceptualizations. Cross-linguistic studies have shown that emotional language and descriptions of character traits are an echo of cultural practices, ethnomedical resources, traditions and beliefs. Taking into account traditional healing practices in Swahili (uganga) and Zulu (umuthi), the author seeks to illustrate the cultural conceptualizations of the body that are involved in describing emotions, in order to shed light on the problematic correspondence between linguistic expression and cultural context in metaphorical processes. Examples of cultural metaphors in the two languages will show how the description of emotions draws from humoral theory, color symbolism and medical practices, which are also relevant to the treatment of diseases.

    Opis:
    Each language and each community name and evaluate the objects and events that exist in their world. The specific names that have been given to separate concepts are used in different contexts. In this way, a name becomes part of the idioms and proverbs of a given language. In every language, there are phrases, expressions and proverbs that have not changed and have been preserved over the centuries. The mere existence of a lexicon referring to the specific topic testifies to the importance and interest of a given issue for a community using a specific language. This paper includes the definition of jealousy/envy in both the Polish and Turkish languages, and the proverbs and phraseological expressions connected with the meaning of jealousy/envy. All the chosen proverbs and expressions, grouped subject-wise, will be presented in Polish translation. The Polish equivalents of Turkish proverbs are also be provided whenever exact or very similar Polish versions have been found. Groups containing particular proverbs and expressions describe: 1. the perception of jealousy/envy and the way it is manifested; 2. the engendering of jealousy; 3. the general truth concerning jealousy/envy; 5. proverbs giving advice on how it is necessary to behave.

    Niniejsze studium ma na celu zbadanie, jakie emocje były najczęściej komunikowane poprzez sztukę powstałą podczas pandemii oraz jakie nowe symbole emocji, motywy były stosowane w procesie tworzenia. Wykorzystano dwie techniki badawcze: analizę treści oraz metodę Panofsky’ego. Materiał badawczy składa się ze 100 ilustracji z Internetu, uzyskanych po wpisaniu w wyszukiwarce Google słów kluczowych „art and coronavirus”. Najczęściej pojawiającą się emocją był strach, następnie złość, potem smutek, a najrzadziej radość. Artyści uliczni odwoływali się do szerokiej gamy tematów: kultury religijnej, mitologicznej, popularnej. Analiza materiału badawczego wykazała, że w przestrzeni społecznej i kulturze pojawiły się nowe symbole reprezentujące pandemię SarsCov-2: cząsteczka koronawirusa (symbol uniwersalny emocjonalnie) oraz biała lub niebieska maseczka chirurgiczna i lateksowa rękawiczka symbolizujące strach.
    This study aimed to investigate which emotions were most often communicated through art created during a pandemic and new symbols of emotions, themes used in the creation process. Two research techniques were used in the study: content analysis and Panofsky’ Method. The research material consists of 100 illustrations from the Internet obtained after entering the keywords article and coronavirus in Google. The most common emotion was fear, next was anger, third was sadness and the least was joy. Street artists appealed to a wide variety of themes: religious, mythological, popular culture. The analysis of the research material showed that new symbols representing the SarsCov-2 pandemic appeared in the social space and culture: the coronavirus molecule (an emotionally universal symbol) and a white or blue surgical mask and latex glove symbolizing fear.

    In this article, the author presents cultural theories of emotion and the concept of emotional culture’ as a tool of sociological analysis. The cultural perspective, in her opinion, is worthy of sociologists’ particular attention; it brings factors of a strictly social nature to the analysis of emotion, for instance, the impact of changes in social organization on the presence of emotions in social life. The idea of emotional culture is essential for this perspective. In the proposed meaning, it refers to the ordering of the ‘emotionality’ of a given collective at the supra-individual level. It comprises scenes for the appearance of emotions, manners of expressing emotions, emotional norms, ideas about emotions, the values attached to emotions, and the language of describing emotional experiences. Analyses from the cultural perspective connect changes in expression and emotional norms with changes in social organization, as is shown through the examples of Norbert Elias’s and Cas Wouters’s work.

    Prezentowane wyniki w poniższym tekście dotyczą używania emotikonów w przestrzeni medialnej przez osoby w wieku 20 – 30 lat. Celem badania pilotażowego była odpowiedź na pytania o to, jak wygląda częstotliwość ich zastosowania wśród polskich użytkowników, jaką funkcję spełniają emotikony w komunikacji medialnej i jakie jest znaczenie podstawowych emotikonów? Badanie eksploracyjne przeprowadzone zostało internetowo na próbie 155 osób i obejmowało 7 pytań ilościowych i 3 pytania otwarte. Wyniki pokazują popularność stosowania emotikonów wśród badanych, dominującą funkcję wyrażania i odbierania emocji oraz różnorodność interpretacji podstawowych znaków graficznych. Rezultaty mogą być inspiracją do dalszych badań dotyczących znaczenia komunikatów z wykorzystaniem emotikonów
    The presented results concern the use of emoticons in media by people aged 20 to 30. The aim of the research was to investigate how emoticons are employed by Polish users, what their function in media communication is, and what the meaning of basic emoticons is. The research, consisting of 10 questions, was conducted via the Internet and included 155 respondents. The results indicate that emoticons are popular among this group, they have a dominant function of expressing emotions and are interpreted Kultura korzystania ze znaków graficznych w komunikacji medialnej. in various ways.     The article discusses the relationship between nationality (Polish and Japanese) and the emotional well-being of seniors. The research focused on the measurement of the mutual relationship of positive and negative feelings of seniors in general, and also of their experiencing and expressing anger in particular. The study was attended by 60 men representing both nationalities (Poles: N = 30, the average age 67.03; Japanese: N = 30, the average age 67.03). The Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE) by Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diener as well as David Forbs’ DAR-5 Scale were used. The gathered data proved no significant differences between Polish and Japanese seniors in terms of emotional well-being. However, the samples differed in the dimensions of aggressive behaviours examined. These results have been interpreted from the perspective of the theory of socio-emotional selectivity.
    W artykule opisano wyniki badania, którego celem było ustalenie zależności między narodowością (polską i japońską) a dobrostanem emocjonalnym seniorów. W tym celu zbadano zakres i wzajemną relację uczuć pozytywnych i negatywnych seniorów. Pytano ich o różne reakcje związane z przeżywaniem i ekspresją gniewu. W badaniu wzięło udział 60 mężczyzn reprezentujących obie narodowości (Polacy: N = 30, średnia wieku 67,03; Japończycy: N = 30, średnia wieku 67,03). Zastosowano Kwestionariusz SPANE Eda Dienera i Roberta Biswasa-Dienera oraz Skalę DAR-5 Davida Forbsa. Analiza wyników nie wykazała istotnych różnic pomiędzy polskimi i japońskimi seniorami w zakresie dobrostanu emocjonalnego. Wskazała natomiast, że obie grupy respondentów różnią się w zakresie badanych wymiarów zachowań agresywnych. Wyniki te zostały zinterpretowane z perspektywy teorii społeczno-emocjonalnej selektywności.

    The author shows how emotive means when falling into the sphere of Christian iconology, are transformed into tools for the spiritual change of a person. One such tool is represented by emotive keys. In the prayers of St Kirill Turovsky they are represented by such varieties as “liturgical emotive keys” – fragments of liturgical sequences (direct quotations, individual reminiscences and/or allusions, centons from reminiscences, allusions, paraphrases, etc.) and “emotive toposes” – images specific to the Pax Christiana culture, easily recognizable by its adherents (hyperbolized self-abasement, different types of metaphors).

    The article aims at focusing attention at selected aspects of pop culture which may, from the point of view of evolutionary psychologists, be deemed approximate to animal proto-cultures and social systems observed among the three-year-olds, i.e. — people who have not yet developed a psychological skill called “theory of mind”. The Author tries to point out that elements of proto-culture in the time of pop -industry development gain on dominance, as a result of which the quality of culture creating processes as well as culture transmission processes may be different than, let’s say, fifty years ago. It is not only about the mass media, but it is most of all about deep psychological processes which are the basis for understanding the essence of culture and participation in culture. In other words, the author tries to argue that norms, ideas and values, i.e. what culture is made of in general — are understood and disseminated in ways which are different in quality from the ones prevailing in the past.

    This paper undertakes the issue of how the organizational culture of a certain institution is being experienced by reconstructing the leading themes coming from auto-observation and descriptions of it. Still, instead of investigating how it is perceived or how its values are verbalized, the study referring to the actual experiencing of certain spaces, social relations, as well as how these are being conceptually embraced therein has been undertaken. To do so, phenomenological methodology and the analysis of qualitative data-adjusted to the research framework at hand-have been employed. Throughout the observation of bodily and mind responses, the lived experience under scrutiny has been given a leading role in regards to determining whether and how the research preconceptualizations should be superseded by the perceptions of the organizational reality under study, as seen and experienced by those who actively partake in the institution at hand. This research refers to how the University is being experienced by the students of one of its degree courses.

    As the theoretical framework of this text serves the concept of S. Gordon’s emotional culture. It includes emotion dictionaries, norms, and beliefs about emotions. I am interested in some aspects of the emotional culture of professionals in the social welfare sector. The results obtained are intended to provide further discussion on the transformations of emotional culture in the sphere of help.
    Ramą teoretyczną niniejszego tekstu jest koncepcja kultury emocjonalnej Stevena Gordona. Obejmuje ona słowniki emocji, normy i przekonania wobec emocji. Interesują mnie aspekty kultury emocjonalnej profesjonalistów w sektorze pomocy społecznej. Uzyskane wyniki mają służyć dalszym dyskusjom na temat przemian kultury emocjonalnej w sferze pomocy.

    The aim of this article is to conceptualise emotions in the discourse of cultural studies, which were initiated in the 1970s. American discourse focuses on the role of emotions in shaping individuality and subjectivity (emotional labour), while European discourse focuses on their historically and culturally conditioned constructs. Even though they have been regarded in academic discourse as opposed to reason, today it is believed that emotions determine cognitive processes, and cognitive processes can have an effect on emotions. The article discusses theoretical concepts related to emotions: biological determinism/ biological reductionism, socio-cultural constructivism and deconstructionism, affective turn, and culture of emotions.
    Celem artykułu była konceptualizacja emocji w dyskursie nauk o kulturze, zapoczątkowanym w latach 70. XX wieku. Dyskurs amerykański koncentruje się na roli emocji w kształtowaniu indywidualności i podmiotowości (praca emocjonalna), podczas gdy dyskurs europejski ogniskuje się na ich historycznie i kulturowo uwarunkowanych konstruktach. Choć w dyskursie akademickim traktowano je jako przeciwieństwo rozumu, dziś uważa się, że emocje determinują procesy poznawcze, a procesy poznawcze mogą oddziaływać na emocje. Artykuł omawia teoretyczne koncepcje związane z emocjami: determinizm biologiczny/redukcjonizm biologiczny, konstruktywizm społeczno-kulturowy i dekonstrukcjonizm, zwrot afektywny, kultura emocjonalna.

    Przedkładany artykuł dotyczy analizy znaczenia języka w odczytywaniu stanów emocjonalnych u samego siebie oraz u drugiej osoby. W części pierwszej artykułu autor przedstawia trudności związane z kategoryzacją emocji, będące efektem posługiwania się innymi językami. Dalej dowodzi, że dla zrozumienia emocji kluczowe znaczenie ma szeroko pojęta kultura, której nieodzownym wymiarem jest język, pozwalający nazwać określone stany emocjonalne. Z uwagi na to, że emocje są w sposób szczególny zwią- zane z „ja podmiotowym”, podstawową rolę odgrywa rodzaj ukształtowanej struktury umysłowej, określającej charakter owego „ja podmiotowego”. Przykładami odmiennego kształtowania się struktury „ja” są kultury kolektywistyczne i indywidualistyczne. One to wyznaczają sposoby przeżywania emocji i rodzaje dominujących stanów emocjonalnych. Język, jako podstawowy system komunikacji społecznej, pozwala nadawać znaczenie tym stanom, i tym samym wyjaśnia odmienność ich przeżywania oraz ukierunkowuje sposoby ich kategoryzacji.
    The article concerns the analysis of the importance of language in the self-determination of one’s emotional states and his/her determination of the same in another person. In the first part of the article the author presents the difficulties with the categorization of emotions which are the result of using different languages. Further, he proves, that the broadly understood culture, in which a language is an indispensable dimension, is of the key significance in the comprehension of emotions. Taking into consideration the fact that the emotions are connected to the “subjective self” in a special way, the fundamental role should be attributed to the shaping of the mental structure which defines the character of this “subjective self”. The collectivist and individualist cultures are the examples the dissimilarities in the self-structure shaping. They delineate the ways in which emotional states are experienced, and what types of the experienced emotions dominate. The language as a fundamental system of social communication confers the meanings on emotional states. Through this meaning it explains the variability of experiencing the emotions and guides the ways the emotional states are categorized.

    Opis:
    In this paper the author compares psychological theories of emotions with some models representing cultural perspective, proposed by anthropologists and linguists. The main problem is to concern some conditions of coherence between these different approaches. In the first part of the paper, the author presents the universalistic conception of emotion which was formulated by Paul Ekman. The critical approaches to this theory are analyzed in the second part. The last part of this article is an attempt to answer the question about the possibility and methodological conditions of coherence between psychological models of emotions and the concept of culture.

    Opis:
    This paper addresses issues of feminism, masculinity, and the emotional culture of middle-class men who self-declare as feminists. The author discusses feminist theories on masculinity and its relations with femininity, critical theories of masculinity, and the role of emotional culture in the expression of masculinity. Feminists have proposed a dimorphic definition of feminism as a political movement and personal attitude critical of masculine domination. The critique of patriarchal, hegemonic masculinity has led feminists either to identify with “positive” masculinity or to reject masculinity for a post-gender narrative or material-discursive fact of “being a man,” which suggests an inadequacy of the sex/gender distinction in the description of gender identity. The identification with feminism allows men to avoid the crisis of traditional masculinity and the perspective of gendered emotions, as well as to gain insight into gendered determinants of emotional expression.
