Opis:
This study evaluated the effect of Pseudomonas strains and arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) in enhancing strawberry yield and phenolic and antioxidant capacity on a phosphorus (P) deficient calcareous soil. The experiments were conducted in three replicates with six treatments (four Pseudomonas strains, AMF and control) and three rates of P-fertilizer (0, 75, 150 kg P ha–1). Application of higher phosphate rates decreased total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic and flavonols content, whereas AMF and Pseudomonas strains increased quality and P concentration of fruit. The use of AMF and Pseudomonas strains resulted in better quality when used along with 75 kg P ha–1. These results demonstrated that the rhizospheric microorganisms improved the quality of fruit, especially when they applied in combination with lower rates of chemical fertilizers. Therefore, application of these microorganisms in sustainable agriculture is recommended.

Opis:
Cornelian cherry is a little-known plant that can be grown in Poland both on a commercial and amateur scale. The commercial cornelian cherry plantations should be established using selected cultivars or vegetatively propagated valuable ecotypes, as only this guarantees a uniform yield, maturation and standardization of fruit quality. The experiment was carried out in 2014 and 2015 in the private plantation of cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) located in Dąbrowica, near Lublin (22.454 N; 51.270 E). The subject of the research were ecotypes No.: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15 obtained as seedlings in 1998. Cornelian cherry plants obtained from seeds differed very much in the yield and quality of fruit. The fruit characteristics for the examined ecotypes ranged to 1.63–2.21g for fruit weight, 1.30–1.61 for fruit shape index, 10.13–15.32% for content of stone, 17.85–22.68% for soluble solids content (SSC), 2.32–3.0% for titratable acidity (TA), 6.59–8.36 for SSC/TA, 54.9–75.97 for vitamin C content. Among the ecotypes studied in terms of external fruit features, ecotypes No. 3 and 4 were distinguished due to the largest fruits (mass and diameter) and relatively small share of the stone in the whole mass of the fruit. However, due to the chemical composition, the fruits of ecotype No. 5 were distinguished by the content of extract, extract to acids ratio, sugar, dry matter, anthocyanins and vitamin C content. These fruits enjoyed 55% strong acceptability among adults. The indicated ecotypes can be used in breeding as well as in nursery for obtaining valuable varieties of cornelian cherry for production in Poland.

Opis:
Dehydrins are proteins that play a role in the mechanism of drought tolerance. This study aimed at establishing dehydrin profile and accumulation in four local melon varieties of Iran: Mino, Dargazi, Saveii, and Semsori, as well as in a commercial variety Honeydew. Plants were treated with drought stress by adjusting the soil water content to 75, 50, 40, 30 and 20% of field capacity (FC) by withholding water. Water status of plants was monitored based on the seedling fresh weight (FW) and relative water content of leaves (RWC). Total protein content was extracted, then heat-stable protein (HSP) fraction was isolated for each variety and water stress treatment. After SDS-PAGE of HSP, Western blotting analysis was carried out with Anti-dehydrin rabbit (primary) and Goat anti rabbit (secondary) antibodies. ANOVA results showed that with decreasing FC below 75%, FW and RWC decreased, but these changes significantly varied among genotypes. On the basis of FW and RWC data under different drought stress treatments, the following drought-tolerant ranking was established: Mino > Dargazi > Saveii and Honeydew > Semsori, from tolerant to sensitive order. Results of Western blot analysis showed that expression of some proteins with molecular weights of 19– 52 kDa was induced in the studied varieties under drought stress (% FC). Expression level of the dehydrin proteins in different varieties was variable and also depending on the drought stress level applied. However, dehydrin proteins (45 and 50 kDa) showed strong expression levels in all varieties under severe drought stress (20% FC). The abundance of dehydrin proteins was higher in tolerant varieties (Mino and Dargazi) than in moderate and drought sensitive genotypes. Consequently, dehydrins represent a potential marker for selection of genotypes with enhanced drought tolerance.

The higher fungi are a rich source of chemical compounds with multi-directional therapeutic and pro-health effects. This review summarizes the results of the most important chemical and biological studies of the fruiting bodies and the mycelial cultures of Laetiporus sulphureus. Numerous studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial, anticancer, cytotoxic, hypoglycemic anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of the extracts. Currently, only a few wood-decay fungi have practical use in medicine. Therefore it seems important to continue research on the effectiveness and safety of extracts and compounds of natural origin, including fungi, whose potential is not still used.

Opis:
Mandevilla sanderi is an important commercial ornamental pot plant. Traditional vegetative propagation is limited due to the low rate, therefore there is a need to develop an alternative, more efficient method. There is an interest in development of micropropagation technology for the species, as it allows to obtain a lot of offsprings in a relatively short time. The aim of the present work was to estimate an influence of explants type and position on regeneration of Mandevilla sanderi in tissue culture. Four different types of explants (leafy shoot tips, decapitated leafy shoot tips, defoliated shoot tips, decapitated and defoliated shoot tips) were used in the experiment, which were placed on the media vertically, while defoliated shoot tips were placed horizontally or vertically upside down. The explants were cultivated on a Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1 mg·dm–3 benzyladenine (BA) and 0.5 mg·dm–3 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). It was noted that both explants orientation and positioning, influenced the multiplication rate. Defoliated shoot tips placed horizontally were characterized by higher multiplication rate (6.8) in comparison to upside down vertical positioning (3.2). It was also observed that removal of shoot apex improved axillary branching, while defoliation of shoots placed in a normal position reduced multiplication rate.

Two inoculums: Effective Microorganisms (EM) specimen available on the market and microbiological BAF1 inoculum, were applied in the experiment. The plants were cultivated in the growth chamber equipped with shelves with fluorescent or LED lamps. The highest number of inflorescences was under the influence of white color of light emitted by fluorescent lamps and blue color of light emitted by LED lamps, especially after application of BAF1 inoculum. Irrespective of microbiological inoculum, no significant effect of the color of light and type of lamps on such traits as height of leaves layer, number of leaves, greening index of leaves (SPAD) and length of inflorescences, was found. The white color light emitted by fluorescent lamps stimulated actinobacteria multiplication, especially after EM application. Regardless of the inoculum application, it was the blue color light emitted by LED lamps that stimulated the multiplication of moldy fungi. After the use of fluorescent lamps, the increase in dehydrogenase activity was observed, especially after the application of BAF1 inoculum. The activity of acid phosphatase was stimulated by blue and white+blue light emitted by LED lamps. The increase in the activity of urease was observed under fluorescent lamps emitting the green, blue and white color of light, after the application of EM.

The Asian pear tree (Nashi), originated in China and Japan, where it is commonly grown. In Europe, in Poland in particular, it remains almost unknown, despite the fact that its cultivation has been proven to be possible there. The aim of the experiment – carried out between 2008 and 2015 at the Fruit Experimental Station Samotwór, next to Wrocław – was to evaluate the growth intensity and yielding of several Asian pear tree cultivars: ‘Kosui’, ‘Shinseiki’, ‘Nijisseiki’, ‘Chojuro’, ‘Hosui’, and ‘Shu Li’; as well as the quality and biological value of their fruits. ‘Conference’, which is widespread in Europe, was chosen as the control variety. ‘Conference’, ‘Shu Li’, and ‘Hosui’ showed highest growth intensity, whereas the trees of ‘Shinseiki’ were the smallest. In terms of yields over the period of eight years following the planting, ‘Chojuro’ and ‘Shinseiki’ performed best, while the least fruits were obtained from the ‘Nijisseiki’ cultivar. Significantly heaviest and biggest fruits were collected from the Chinese ‘Shu Li’ cultivar. In 2012, Nashi fruits had similar carotenoid, calcium, and magnesium contents as the fruits of ‘Conference’.

Opis:
Carrot production of valuable carotenes, carbohydrate and protein are hindered by elevated salinity levels in many parts of the world. To assess this problem, germination and growth of two carrot cultivars (Daucus carota cvs Jordan and Napoli) were studied in vivo and in vitro under different salt stress concentrations (0, 75, and 150 mM NaCl). Seeds were directly or gradually exposed to these salt concentrations. With elevated salinity levels, significant reductions in growth parameters (dry shoot weight, fresh shoot weight, shoot length, root length, and root number) were observed. Also, significant difference in germination percentage was observed at 150 mM NaCl in both cultivars when compared with control treatment (90% germination percentage in Napoli and 71% in Jordan cultivar). Growth rate, tolerant index, and relative water content (RWC) declined as salinity increased. The 150 mM NaCl salinity treatment significantly reduced the shoot chlorophyll and protein content, but increased carbohydrate content. Lesser impairment by the gradual exposure of seedling to salinity provides an opportunity to study the acquirement of salt tolerance.

Identification of cultivars is essential both in breeding and to settle cultivar disputes. The purpose of the study has been to examine cultivar identities based on absorption spectra of plant pigments and to confirm a genetic stability with SCoT and RAPD molecular markers in new Polish lines of Chenopodium quinoa Willd. Spectral analysis of pigments extracted from plant inflorescences in quinoa gives an opportunity to confirm the cultivar identity and identification of ‘Faro’ and ‘Titicaca’ cultivars and their new lines. Spectral analysis is an effective method of confirming cultivar identity and it should be used in practice for the identification of cultivars or cultivars lines in Chenopodium quinoa Willd. Analysis of molecular markers indicated by RAPD as well as SCoT technique revealed a high genetic stability of the derivative lines of ‘Faro’ and ‘Titicaca’, while variation was detected in plants representing original cultivars: banding pattern different than predominant was present in three plants of ‘Titicaca’ (genetic distnaces from 7.5% to 55.9%) and in a single plant of ‘Faro’(genetic distance 61.2% as indicated by SCoT technique).

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki doświadczenia symulacyjnego z wykorzystaniem modelu Daisy (kalibracja „Potato Triada”), obejmującego uprawę ziemniaka w systemach: konwencjonalnym, proekologicznym oraz integrowanym w latach 2000- 2006.
This paper describes the results of the simulation experiment with use of Daisy model (‘Potato Triada’ calibration) which covered potato cultivation over 2000-2006 and three potato cultivation systems: conventional, pro-ecological and integrated. The results show that manure with proper irrigation ensured the highest potato tuber yields (about 55 t·ha-1 of fresh weight) in all the systems tested. The irrigation methods used (simple balance and decision support system: DSS) eliminated water stress during the potato vegetation period with the application of the total irrigated water rate of about 110 mm. Irrigation increased evapotranspiration and the number of N stress days regardless of potato cultivation system. The lowest values of nitrogen balance were 49 and 58 kg N·ha-1 in integrated (dynamic and static options) systems of cultivation. The highest content of N in soil (101 kg N·ha-1) remained in pro-ecological combination, without irrigation. For the vegetation period the nitrogen leakage from soil assessed by Daisy ranged from 8 to 14 kg N·ha-1 for the period of potato vegetation. The Daisy model with the ‘Triada Potato’ calibration facilitated the simulation of potato yields with RRMSE of 15.4%, for the conventional cultivation system of that crop in Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute Jadwisin.

Opis:
A field experiment was conducted in the years 2008- 2010 at the Research Station of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of Life Sciences in Lublin, on brown soil with a slightly acidic pH, a high content of available phosphorus and potassium as well as an average magnesium content. The experiment was set up in a random split-plot design with four replications, with two methods for controlling weed infestation: I. mechanical – weeding of inter-rows twice; II. chemical – the herbicide Afalon Dyspersyjny 450 SC (a.i. linuron, 900 g×ha-1). Next, potassium, calcium and magnesium contents were determined in maize and in the dominant weed species. Based on the dry weight yield of maize and the biomass of particular weed species, nutrient uptake per hectare area was calculated. The chemical method of weed control reduced both the number and dry weight of weeds more than the mechanical method. The dominant species in the maize crop were Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv., Chenopodium album L., Galinsoga parviflora Cav., and Cirsium arvense L. All the weed species examined were more competitive than maize in accumulating potassium, calcium and magnesium. Galinsoga parviflora Cav. was the most competitive species with maize for potassium, Cirsium arvense L. for calcium, and Chenopodium album L. and Polygonum lapathifolium L. subsp. lapathifolium for magnesium. Weeds are serious competitors in taking up nutrients relative to crop plants; their share in the total uptake of macroelements from the soil by the maize crop and weeds together was considerable and it averaged as follows: for K – 35%, Ca – 27.3%, Mg –27.4%.
Doświadczenie założono w układzie losowanych podbloków, w czterech powtórzeniach, uwzględniając dwie metody regulacji zachwaszczenia kukurydzy: I. mechaniczna – dwukrotne opielanie międzyrzędzi; II. chemiczna – herbicyd Afalon Dyspersyjny 450 EC (s.a. linuron, w dawce 900 g×ha-1). W kukurydzy i dominujących gatunkach chwastów oznaczono zawartość potasu, wapnia i magnezu. Gatunkami dominującymi w uprawie kukurydzy były: Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P Beauv., Chenopodium album L., Galinsoga parviflora Cav. i Cirsium arvense L. Wszystkie badane gatunki chwastów były bardziej konkurencyjne w gromadzeniu potasu, wapnia i magnezu niż rośliny kukurydzy. Gatunkiem najsilniej konkurującym o potas była Galinsoga parviflora Cav., o wapń – Cirsium arvense L., zaś o magnez – Chenopodium album L. i Polygonum lapathifolium L subsp. lapathifolium.

Opis:
The fertilization value of potato slop was evaluated as affected by application terms, addition of straw, mineral fertilization and liminig of the soil. Dry matter yield of tested plants harvested from objects with liminig application was higher that these from objects without liminig. The yielding effectiveness of particular objects with the same fertilizer used was higher at spring application term than at the autumn term of application. Supplementary fertilization with P and K fertilizers as well as the application of potato slop with the straw increased the fertilization value of investigated potato slop.
