Opis:
Research conducted in the crypts in the church of The Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Szczuczyn brought many new elements into funeral history of the modern period. The unique conditions in the crypt contributed to the preservation of many remains of funerary clothing, the existence of which in the original equipment of the deceased was only guessed, because the linen and wool fabrics were usually decaying. The analysis of the materials from Szczuczyn allowed to broaden the knowledge of grave costumes sewn from these fabrics, as well as to verify their role – as a result of the conducted research, it was found that less durable materials were also present in exceptionally richly furnished graves. Objects analyzed during the excavations also allowed for a kind of confrontation and tracing the extent to which the secular community living in 18th-century Poland complied with the rules imposed by the church regarding the use of the recommended grave costumes. The analysis of the total number of burials of children in the crypts of the post-piarist church in Szczuczyn also allows for some conclusions regarding the identification of the sex of the children placed there. During the research conducted in the crypts under the presbytery, 96 burials were described in detail. This number also included children's burials, which were subjected to a detailed in situ analysis. As a result of these works, the burials of two children of Stanisław Antoni Szczuka, the founder of the church and the owner of Szczuczyn, were identified. Little August Michał was buried in a silk żupan, and Maria Anna in a silk grave dress sewn from grits. The remaining children were mostly buried in linen dresses decorated with silk belts, but among them, there were also some unique forms of grave costumes. Thus, in the crypts of Szczuczyn in Poland, an archaeological discovery of a linen Czechman was made, and a dress with a printed floral pattern can be considered an extremely unique burial.

Opis:
The article describes a series of finds of Parthian military items in the graves and crypts of Vestemin in northern Iran. These findings are especially significant as they provide an array of discoveries of military equipment: swords, daggers, spearheads, arrowheads, armor and a possible helmet. This study obliges a revision of Winkelman’s observation that “few finds of weapons have been made inside Iran” with respect to Parthian military equipment. In an overall sense, these findings may prove to be as significant to the domain of Parthian military studies as the well-known site of Dura Europos. The excavations have also discovered a coin of Philip the Arab or his son from the earlySasanian era which has assisted the authors’ dating of the Vestemin site. The site of Vestemin is not exclusively a burial venue as the site also has defense works as well as a fortress dated the later Parthian era c. 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE).

Opis:
The paper presents the results of archaeological research carried out from 2017 to 2018 in the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi in Cracow, funded by the National Science Centre. The aim of the work undertaken was to locate, inventory, and explore crypts, and to study in detail burials and grave goods. The paper discusses different devices, research methods, and procedures developed by the team and used to locate crypts. They allowed to find eighteen crypts in the church and four in the cloisters. All underground chambers were inventoried using 3D laser scanning. During research, ninety-six burials of the lay and the clergy, men, women, and children, were found.
Dzięki nim odnaleziono osiemnaście krypt w kościele i cztery w krużgankach klasztoru. Wszystkie podziemne pomieszczenia zostały zinwentaryzowane za pomocą skaningu laserowego 3D. W trakcie badań odnaleziono 96 pochówków osób świeckich i duchownych, mężczyzn, kobiet i dzieci.

Opis:
In my article, I analyse selected British novels about the First World War published at the turn of the 20th century, from the theoretical perspectives proposed by Maria Torok and Nicolas Abraham in The Shell and the Kernel: Renewals of Psychoanalysis. Pat Barker in Toby’s Room (2012) and Sue Gee in Earth and Heaven (2000) imagine their protagonists’ difficult evolution from melancholia to mourning after the loss of brothers and/or lovers, at the front. The concepts of incorporation and illness of mourning are used to explore the complicated process of bereavement in Barker’s novel, where hauntology becomes a form of honte-ology, from the French honte, shame. In Gee’s beautifully melancholic novel, the haunting trauma of loss is subtly evoked by images of empty fields, neglected farms, urban vistas filled with spectral figures of unemployed veterans. Moreover, Earth and Heaven affects the reader so deeply because the understated pain of loss becomes movingly tangible after the accidental death of the central protagonist’s six-year-old son, which seems to “condense” the pain of war bereavements a decade after the conflict. My intention is also to demonstrate that Sebastian Faulks in Birdsong (1993), Esther Freud in Summer at Gaglow (1997) and Pat Barker in Another World (1998) approach the Great War as a phantom haunting their contemporary protagonists. The persistence of the unknown past has a profound impact on these characters and only by trying to relate to the Great War do they find answers to their existential dilemmas. This directs our attention to the incomplete processes of First World War mourning, the persistence of endless grief and the potential continuity of unresolved trauma(s) in transgenerational memory. The five novels under consideration also problematise the issue of silence-the unsayable family secret and/or the collective disregard for the national past. The psychoanalytic concept of crypt illuminates the relation between present and past in these fictions and makes it possible to draw a connection with the sociological concept of cultural trauma, referring to certain foundational events constructed as traumatic from the point of view of the British collectivity.

Opis:
Polychrome on the vaults or walls of grave crypts are a rare category of finds and they are often accompanied by problems for specialist analyses or restoration. A composition of five images of religious and symbolic character was registered on a completely plastered barrel vault with lunettes in a crypt situated under the chapel of The Passion in postcistercian church of The Holy Trinity in Byszewo. Archaeological exploration of the crypt resulted in the excavation of 92 coffins of lay representatives – both adults and children. Burial and grave goods analyses confirmed that the crypt could have been erected in the middle of 18th century and used until the beginning of 19th century. Physicochemical tests and conservation analysis of the painting suggest that walls and the vault completing works could be continued in the time of intense use of the room as a burial place, and the present polychrome is probably the fourth layer of painting. The elements preserved until the present day might have been created between the 18th and 19th century.

During the inventory-arranging works inside the western and eastern crypts under the presbytery conducted in the church of The Name of the Holy Virgin Mary in Szczuczyn, two examples of women’s eighteenth-century shoes were found. The first specimen represents a slip-on, leather shoe decorated with silk ribbons. The second one belongs to the class of footwear with a textile upper fastened with a buckle. Excellent conditions prevailing in the crypts ensured that the artefacts have been preserved in very good condition. This permitted detailed research on the raw materials used in constructing the footwear to be conducted. Textiles, leather and wood were subjected to microscopic analysis

Opis:
A survey of monuments of Chersonesos necropolis allows us to trace the transformation of worldview of the inhabitants in the transition from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages. In the 4th century in the city Christianity spread. Christians used symbolic language of late antiquity for the creation of their art system, but they gave it a new meaning. Especially clear reflection of this process are Chersonesos crypts with Christian paintings. They illustrate a stage of forming of the early Christian idea of paradise.
