Opis:
Objectives Investigate the impact of daily occupational walking steps on the progression of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), a topic hitherto underresearched. Material and Methods The authors analyzed the data from 800 individuals with PTC across stages 0–IV. Participants were evenly divided into 2 distinct occupational groups: office workers and construction workers (N = 400 each). Data included comprehensive records of daily walking steps, demographic information, and clinical indicators. Pearson’s correlation coefficients or analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to assess the linkage between daily walking steps and PTC risk and stage, as well as associated biochemical markers. Results The analysis revealed a significant inverse relationship between daily walking steps and PTC risk. A higher frequency of daily steps was associated with reduced chances of PTC onset and a lower diagnostic stage of the disease. This protective effect of physical activity was particularly pronounced in the construction worker cohort. Subsequent evaluations showed that construction workers who consistently logged higher daily steps had markedly lower levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine, free thyroxine, thyroid peroxidase antibody, thyroglobulin antibody, and thyroglobulin (Tg). Notably, daily walking steps exhibited a strong inverse correlation with body mass index (BMI), age, PTC volumes, and levels of TSH and Tg across both occupational groups (ρ < –0.37). The increase in daily steps was associated with the reduction in PTC stages (p < 0.001). Conclusions The research underscores the potential benefits of increased daily walking steps, suggesting that they may play a protective role in reducing PTC risk and moderating its progression.

Exploring the Spectrum of Construction Catastrophes: A Comprehensive Study of Diverse Incidents Across Varied Projects in Poland Since the Post-World War II Era. Construction catastrophes, encompassing a wide array of incidents spanning diverse construction projects regardless of their intended function, scale, technological intricacies, or phases of development, warrant meticulous investigation. These occurrences, occurring during both construction and operational phases, underscore the significance of identifying underlying causes to enhance safety and risk management practices. In this pursuit, this scientific endeavor delves into the intricate realm of construction disasters that have transpired within the geographical boundaries of Poland subsequent to the Second World War. By meticulously examining these instances, this paper endeavors to shed light on the multifaceted factors that contributed to their unfolding. Through rigorous analysis, it seeks to unravel the underlying elements, encompassing engineering flaws, material limitations, regulatory oversights, and human errors, which collectively or in isolation, led to these prominent mishaps. Through an amalgamation of empirical data, historical context, and contemporary discourse, this study seeks to not only comprehend the individual incidents but also to extract overarching patterns and lessons learned. By synthesizing these findings, the research aspires to contribute to the broader discourse on construction safety, resilience, and preventive strategies. Ultimately, this investigation strives to equip stakeholders, including engineers, policy makers, and construction professionals, with a more comprehensive understanding of the factors that can precipitate catastrophic events in construction projects, thus paving the way for a safer and more secure built environment in Poland and beyond.

Objectives Academic burnout poses a challenge to the educational process. Higher education institutions have responsibilities similar to the ones of management in business settings. These institutions are responsible for creating conditions conducive to development and, as such, may be interested in verifying the presence of student burnout and pinpointing its causes. The purpose of this study was to answer these needs and develop a scale to measure the effect of organizational factors that may predict student burnout. Material and Methods This paper reports the results of a study conducted on a sample of Polish students (N = 659) to construct and validate a multidimensional measure of organizational factors impacting academic burnout, focusing on students. For background purposes and as a starting point, the authors used the concept of the areas of worklife by Ch. Maslach and M. Leiter, who identified 6 areas of the work environment that affect the relationships people develop with their work, i.e., workload, control, reward, community, fairness, and values. Results The authors assessed the factor structure, reliability, and construct validity and performed confirmatory factor analysis of the new scale to measure 6 areas of academic life. Given the results of this study, the scale can be recommended as an adequate tool to measure organizational (academic) factors of burnout in students. Conclusions The authors have validated the final scale, which can be used to advance the understanding of the academic burnout phenomenon.

Cost overrun during construction is one of the most common problems occur in construction projects around the world, which also includes the area of Chongqing in China. At present, there are few studies related to cost overruns at the construction stage of high-rise residential building projects (HRBPs) in Chongqing. The purpose of this study is to develop effective control measures from the contractor’s perspective to help projects to minimize cost overruns during the construction phase of HRBPs in Chongqing. Firstly, through the literature review and semi-structured interviews, 65 cost overrun-related risk factors in construction projects were identified. All the risk factors have been prioritized through the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) based on their importance to project success. Out of the 65 factors identified, 12 were classified as the critical ones that have a great potential to instigate a cost overrun during construction to take place in the real project. There were four risk factors that have the greatest impact on cost overruns, and their weights were 0.04 or above, including low bid, force majeure, undetailed/inaccurate geological survey data, and increased loan interest rates. Finally, control measures were developed for these four critical cost overrun risk factors (CCORFs). The measures developed provided a guideline to control the risk of cost overruns and clear control key points to help contractors minimize cost overruns on construction projects.

The methodology and research results presented in the article indicate the practical possibility of conducting optimization of construction project management course. The goal of the achievement leads to the rationalization of the management of investment tasks, in which there are a series of uncertain parameterized events. The goal was achieved through many years of the author’s own research, which was personally carried out on several hundred construction projects according to original methodology for assessing and forecasting the characteristic parameters of construction investments (cost and time) in conditions of uncertainty: from determinism, through probability and randomness, to fuzziness. The presented and documented achievement stands for accomplishment in project management of construction projects, where decision-making with an increasing degree of uncertainty takes place and requires the course of investment tasks that will be implemented in the future to be forecasted. In the conducted research and conclusions it was proven that construction processes should be considered as phenomena with random events and various degrees of uncertainty, to which methodology with developed modelling parameters should be used.
Zarządzanie przedsięwzięciami budowlanymi i podejmowanie decyzji zarządczych następuje w rosnącym stopniu niepewności i wymaga prognozowania przebiegu zadań inwestycyjnych, które zostaną zrealizowane w przyszłości.

Opis:
The implementation of processes comprising the overall project management consists in the use of various tools, methods and techniques depending on the type of the project. The knowledge of the industry and the characteristics of construction projects make it possible to select those which, on the one hand, will not cause difficulties for the contractors and on the other, will, in fact, constitute a necessary complement to the technical skills of the project manager. Construction companies face situations that have a profound impact on the failure of projects. Such occurrences include a large number of simultaneously implemented projects, the appointment of a person who knows the project mainly from the implementation side as the project manager, a failure to perform risk analysis and procedures that become irrelevant when deadlines are approaching. After reviewing the available construction projects, analysing the literature, consulting experts and making observations, the authors determined that the majority of difficulties and failures result from omissions or errors that take place during the project planning and implementation stages. The following paper outlines the selected elements of project management, whose application in construction projects may significantly affect their final success and the results obtained. It also includes an example of the use of modern management methods, which certainly include risk management methods. A utilitarian tool addressing the effects of risk analysis is a contingency plan. Contingency may be translated as eventuality, possibility and sometimes also as coincidence.
Do nowoczesnych metod zarządzania możemy z pewnością zaliczyć metody służące do zarządzania ryzykiem.

Opis:
Complex construction projects require appropriate planning that allows for time and cost optimization, maximization of the use of available resources and appropriate investment control. Scheduling is a complicated process, due to the uncertainties and risks associated with construction works, the paper describes the development of the scheduling method traditionally used in Poland, based on data from KNR catalogs, by using the RiskyProject Professional program. In the RiskyProject Professional program, the risk and uncertainty with reference to a specific construction project were modeled, and the calculation results were compared with the real time of the project implementation. The conclusions from the work carried out confirm that the SRA (Schedule Risk Analysis) analysis of the base schedule allows for a more faithful representation of the actual conditions of a construction project. The probability of investment realization generated on the basis of the SRA analysis may be assumed at the level of 75÷90%.
Złożone przedsięwzięcia budowlane wymagają odpowiedniego planowania, które umożliwia optymalizację czasowo-kosztową, maksymalizację wykorzystania dostępnych zasobów i odpowiednią kontrolę inwestycji. W pracy opisano rozwinięcie tradycyjnie stosowanej w Polsce metody harmonogramowania, opartej na danych pochodzących z katalogów KNR, poprzez wykorzystanie programu RiskyProject Professional. W programie RiskyProject Professional zamodelowano ryzyko i niepewność w nawiązaniu do konkretnego projektu budowlanego, a wyniki obliczeń porównano z czasem rzeczywistym realizacji przedsięwzięcia.

The authors analyse the standardisation of risk management as an effective tool for the safety of design solutions in residential construction. The analysed regulatory documentation answers the question of achieving an acceptable level of risk. Within the framework of improving environmental management, the use of specific penalties looks quite natural. However, the primary purpose of ISO 14001 is to form a responsible attitude toward the environment and natural resources as the most crucial assets of economic activity. The article raises the issue that domestic standards cannot thoroughly guide risk analysts due to their lack of development and inconsistency with ISO 31000:2018 and ISO 14001:2016. It is necessary to develop a unique approach to risk assessment, de facto describing the interaction of different scenarios, which will ensure an increase in the environmental and economic effects in the field of housing safety.

In the daily operation of an airport, there are a multitude of hazards that can compromise operational safety; therefore, it is critical to monitor and identify these hazards as well as the associated risks. This work's main objective was to assess the operational risks and hazards that may arise from construction works in the airport environment by applying a methodology for the risk assessment based on historical data of aircraft incidents obtained from SKYbrary Aviation Safety and The Aviation Herald from 2000 to 2015. For this study, it was taken as a reference the expansion work at Jorge Chávez International Airport in the city of Lima, Peru. This is a large-scale project, with the construction of a second runway, a new control tower, taxiways, parking aprons, etc. Ten generic hazards were identified, from which thirty-seven potential risks were derived. However, most of them had a low probability of occurrence, so an "acceptable" tolerability prevailed. Among the recommendations presented (ATIS, NOTAM, visual signs, phraseology, signage, procedures, etc.), these are mainly focused on human factors and in phases 1 and 2 of the construction works, the critical phases where the current runway section is connected to the new taxiways giving access to the second runway.

Nowe zagrożenia wynikają m.in. z rozwoju nowych technologii, a także ciągłej automatyzacji i robotyzacji branży budowlanej.
Unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones, are widely used in many sectors of the economy, including construction. It is important to be aware that unmanned aerial vehicles pose new risks in the construction industry that have not existed before. The new risks are due, among other things, to the development of new technologies, as well as the continued automation and robotisation of the construction industry. For this purpose, a procedure (protocol) has been developed for the correct, safe preparation and planning of an unmanned aircraft flight for a construction operation.

Electrocution is one of the main causes of workplace deaths in the construction industry. This paper presents a framework for identifying electrocution risk factors and exploring the correlations between them, with the aim of assisting accident prevention research. Specifically, the Haddon Matrix is used to extract the risk factors from 193 investigation reports of electrical shock accidents from 2012-2019, and the Apriori algorithm is applied to examine the potential relationships between these factors. Based on association rules using three criteria: support(S), confidence(C) and lift(L), the betweenness centrality is then introduced to optimize association rules and find the most important rules though comparison. The results show that after optimization, some of these critical rules rise significantly in rank, such as Workplace: indoor → No CPR provided. Through these ranking changes, the focus of safety management is clarified, and finally, based on a comprehensive analysis of association rules, targeted accident prevention measures are suggested.

The article aims to assess risk for substantiating the economic and organizational efficiency of construction in the context of ecologic safety. A quantitative risk estimation was made through the Monte Carlo way for negative and positive choices to avoid ecological harm. The simulation algorithm imitated the distribution obtained from the evidence-based fit. The outcomes of a sensitivity investigation are also prepared to verify the suggestion. This risk analysis technique has a digital computer implementation. The simulation data outputs demonstrate the alternative of the general norm of validation and the acceptance of the solution, which is not harmful to the environment. In situations of uncertainty, the decision to select the optimistic flavor with high spending (to retain the reliability of the technics) but less risk pretends to be a decisive factor in the eco-friendly protection strategies of the construction project.

The paper presents a comparative analysis of Machine Learning (ML) research methods allowing to assess the risk of mining damage occurring in traditional masonry buildings located in the mining area of Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGOM) as a result of intense mining tremors. The database of reports on damage that occurred after the tremors of 20 February 2002, 16 May 2004 and 21 May 2006 formed the basis for the analysis. Based on these data, classification models were created using the Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) and the Support Vector Machine (SVM) method. The results of previous research studies allowed to include structural and geometric features of buildings,as well as protective measures against mining tremors in the model. The probabilistic notation of the model makes it possible to effectively assess the probability of damage in the analysis of large groups of building structures located in the area of paraseismic impacts. The results of the conducted analyses confirm the thesis that the proposed methodology may allow to estimate, with the appropriate probability, the financial outlays that the mining plant should secure for the repair of the expected damage to the traditional development of the LGOM mining area.
