Opis:
Circle dances are observed in various cultures and times. The paper indicates certain social, political and situational contexts of the phenomenon of communal circle dances in remote territories: Catalonia, Balcans, Sakha (Yakutia), Buriatya and USA. The author offers an interpretation of chosen cases in terms of Victor Turner’s concept of communitas. During the communal dances – sardana, corlu mari, yokhor, osuokhai and ghost dance – the idea of community, equality and unity is dominating over social structure divisions and resulting in forming the psychological and social communitas. This is why all analysed circle dances arise in the context of serious menace and destruction of ethnic integrity. Being together in a very literal sense through physical closeness during the same motoric behaviours, common singing produces feeling of power and unifications, reinforcing social identity and affirmation to a group. Circle dances are analysed in association with attempts to preserve group cultural and oft en even biological integrity.

The article explores the link between the circle dance and its cultural and political environment, its situational context. I analyze this phenomenon using the notion of communitas, created by Victor Turner, which relates to the state of a group when the unity, uniformity, and communality become more important than the internal diversity and social structure. The article is based on various material including interviews, records of observation, and visual documentation that I have gathered during fieldwork in ethnic Buryatia in 2000, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014, and in Yakutia in 2013. Presently in both republics circle dances often accompany ceremonies, celebrations, or cultural festivals organized by the authorities (state or local administrations, or non-governmental organizations.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest wpływ myśli Floriana Znanieckiego na koncepcję communitas Victora Turnera. Pierwsza część artykułu zawiera prezentację koncepcji communitas Victora Turnera. W części drugiej przedstawiono koncepcję wspólnoty Znanieckiego, do której odwołuje się Turner. Część trzecia ukazuje związki między jedną a drugą koncepcją oraz możliwości kontynuowania refleksji zapoczątkowanej przez nie obie.
The article concerns Florian Znaniecki’s thought inspiration in Victor Turner’s concept of communitas. The first part presents the concept of community by Victor Turner. The second one deals with Znaniecki’s concept of communion to which Turner referred. The last part shows the relationship between the two ideas and indicates the possibility of continuing the reflection started by both concepts

The term communitas, introduced into anthropological discourse by Victor Turner in the late 1960s, returned to humanist debates at the threshold of the twenty-first century by way of Roberto Esposito. Referring to Esposito’s concept of communitas, this essay brings out the anthropological tradition in thinking about the common, which Esposito had marginalized. The present author emphasized the importance of processuality and antistructural dimensions of egalitarian forms of togetherness, along with their potential to liberate human capacities of creativity. Examining the relation between munus and ludus, she shows theatricality residing immanently in the root of communitas. Focusing on the aesthetic and creative dimensions of togetherness helps in detecting multiple forms of commonality, and indicates various models of theatrical communitas. Exploring a nonnormative, transformative potential in experimental theater (Jerzy Grotowski, Sarah Kane, Ron Athey, Krzysztof Garbaczewski), she emphasizes collective, temporal, and excessive natures of theater that eschews the market-driven economy, along with the importance of a transversal communitas where the human being is only one of many actors. Some threads of the argumentation are expanded upon in a conversation with Leszek Kolankiewicz, included as an appendix.
Pojęcie communitas, wprowadzone do dyskursu antropologicznego przez Victora Turnera pod koniec lat 60. XX wieku, powróciło do debaty humanistycznej u progu XXI wieku za sprawą Roberta Esposito. Niniejszy esej przywraca zmarginalizowaną przez Esposito antropologiczną tradycję w myśleniu o tym, co wspólne. Autorka podkreśla znaczenie procesualności i antystrukturalności egalitarnych form bycia razem oraz ich potencjał wyzwalania kreatywności. Analizując relację między munus a ludus, ukazuje teatralność jako immanentną właściwość communitas. Skupienie na estetycznych i twórczych aspektach wspólnotowości pozwala odsłonić i nazwać wiele jej form oraz scharakteryzować rozmaite modele teatralnej communitas. Autorka wskazuje na nienormatywny i transformacyjny potencjał teatru eksperymentalnego (Jerzy Grotowski, Sarah Kane, Ron Athey, Krzysztof Garbaczewski), by podkreślić kolektywny, efemeryczny i ekscesywny charakter teatru wymykającego się ekonomii rynku, a także uwydatnić znaczenie transwersalnej communitas, w której człowiek jest tylko jednym z wielu aktorów. Niektóre wątki argumentacji zostały rozwinięte w umieszczonej w aneksie rozmowie z Leszkiem Kolankiewiczem.

La Fura dels Baus, una de las agrupaciones artísticas más longevas de la España democrática, debe ser estudiada como un fenómeno cultural y sociológico. Articulando ansias de la sociedad posfranquista, largo tiempo reprimidas, el grupo gozó de una popularidad que no se debió solamente a su calidad artística. Forman un conglomerado sui generis: la poética del grupo, su problemática “ideología” y su cambiante discurso del género. Intentamos demostrar cómo la compañía ayudó a superar algunos de los mayores traumas de la sociedad posfranquista, polemizando de paso con Mariët de Korver sobre si la compañía ha logrado, o no, devolverle a los españoles, el llamado “sentido de la communitas”.
La Fura dels Baus, a theatre group born with Spain’s transition to democracy, inspires both the culture criticism and social science research. They became one of the channels venting the long suppressed fears of post-Franco society and thus exerted influence far beyond the reach of their performance. This, rather eclectic assembly of teasers include the poetics, controversial ideology, and transformation of their status from a gender perspective. The author aims to examine the role of the troupe in the process of overcoming the traumas the post-Franco society had experienced. And she argues with Mariët de Korver about the ‘sense of belonging’ - if the troupe succeeded in restoring the so-called ‘communitas’ to the Spanish.
La Fura dels Baus, jedna z najdłużej istniejących grup teatralnych w demokratycznej Hiszpanii, powinna być analizowana jednocześnie jako zjawisko kulturowe i socjologiczne. Stała się jednym z kanałów komunikujących długo tłumione lęki społeczeństwa postfrankistowskiego oraz zdobyła popularność wynikającą nie tylko z jakości jej spektakli. Na ciekawego rodzaju konglomerat składają się: poetyka grupy, jej problematyczna „ideologia” oraz zmiany jej statusu z perspektywy gender. Autorka tekstu starała się wykazać, jak zespół wspomógł proces pokonywania traum w społeczeństwie postfrankistowskim oraz polemizuje z Mariët de Korver nt. czy grupie udało się przywrócić Hiszpanom tzw. „poczucie przynależności do communitas”.

There is an increasing interest in effective methods for building consumer involvement on a mass scale. This paper offers an interdisciplinary theoretical framework for consumer involvement analysis and forwards an anthropological approach to this issue. It uses categories of play and communitas to examine cultural dynamics underlying consumer involvement. It summarizes and extends theoretical understanding of the topic and provides numerous examples from contemporary marketplace such as Heineken Open’er Festival and Volkswagen ‘Fun Theory’ initiative. Several research propositions are formulated for future empirical endeavors and implications for practice are defined.

The article refers to selected elements of the sociology of Georg Simmel. It accords in general with his theory in regards to the structure of social relations, and deals in particular with the idea of sociability and the meal. The author assumes that a collective embibing of wine is a specific form of culinary consumption constituting an area for manifesting sociability. Basing himself on interviews with wine consumers, the author’s aim is to reveal the manifestations of sociability during the common consumption of this drink and to indicate the elements determining the shape and order of the social interaction: for instance, common standards of taste. As the character of such an interaction is determined by the consumption of wine, which not only imposes a certain thematic framework, but also requires the participants’ mutual adaptation, the social value of drinking can be treated as one aspect of the possible civilising effects of wine.

The author aims to capture the significance of the celebration of Nauryz, the ancient celebration of spring, family, and local community. She describes various forms of celebrating Nauryz on the official, national, local, and family level in Kazakhstan. She emphasizes that the renewed tradition of celebrating Nauryz is part of a process deliberately adopted by the Kazakh authorities in the post-Soviet period in order to build a community from a state of many ethnicities. She states that all the ways of celebrating Nauryz appeal to the original motivation of sustaining, restoring, and strengthening the community. This leads to the formation of communitas (in Victor Turner’s sense), which is conducive to forming the inhabitants of modern Kazakhstan into a multi-ethnic community.
