Opis:
The paper presents an example of regeneration of a common rail piezoelectric fuel injector, which was carried out with using used parts. The most important stages of maintenance activities are listed, as well as the types of diagnostic tests performed on separate test benches. The obtained results indicate that this process can be effectively carried out with existing technological problems and lack of support from the manufacturer. At the same time, it was shown that, contrary to popular belief, cannibalisation does not have to be limited only to minor elements, but also to key components important from the point of view of the satisfactory technical condition and correct working of the fuel injector during further operation.

Opis:
This paper presents the spatial differentiation and the variation in the number of significant accidents (divided into: collisions, derailments, level-crossing accidents, accidents to persons caused by rolling stock in motion and fires) in relation to operation work in selected European countries from 2010 to 2017, using CSIs. CSIs (Common Safety Indicators) are statistical information relating to rail safety collected and made available by the European Union Agency for Railways (EUAR), which obtains them from European Union member states as well as from Norway and Switzerland. The analysis revealed the presence of a large disproportion in the number of accidents between Western and Eastern European countries, with a general decrease between 2010 and 2017 in both groups. The structure of significant accidents was also examined – accidents to persons caused by rolling stock in motion accounted for the majority, while level-crossing accidents also had a high proportion, suggesting that external factors (outside the railway system) largely influenced railway accident rates during the studied period. Particular attention was paid in the article to Poland, which at the beginning of the period under study was negatively distinguished in terms of the number of significant accidents, the number of derailments and the number of accidents to persons caused by rolling stock in motion not only in comparison with Western European countries, but also Eastern European countries, and at the end of the period in each category reached lower values than the latter group of countries.

Opis:
In earlier designs, the compression-ignition engine units were controlled by means of mechanical elements. They were levers, rods, springs, pawls, cams and others. The quality of such control did not ensure the required repeatability of control parameters in the fuel injection and combustion process. After the introduction of the standards limiting engine emissions of the limited exhaust components, the aforementioned engine control systems were not able to meet the requirements. The mechanical regulation of mechanical systems has been replaced by electronic control systems. It was the development of computer techniques and software that enabled design solutions of control systems for injection and combustion process parameters in engines with sufficient accuracy and repeatability of test results. The modern EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) control system, due to the computing power of microprocessors increased in recent years, enables meeting high requirements of modern Common Rail injection systems. The article presents issues in the area of four thematic levels: the design and modernization of the engine, its operation, diagnostic problems in order to determine reasons of unit failures and bench-top methods for assessing the effectiveness of unit repairs as well as issues concerning alternative fuels.

The article discusses the results of research on the use of canola oil and canola oil with the addition of n-hexane in a compression-ignition engine. An engine with a Common Rail injection system was tested in real traffic conditions on the road and on a chassis dynamometer. The tested fuels were fed to the engine by an additional fuel supply system. An analysis of the effect of the addition of n-hexane on the emission of the main components of toxic exhaust gases was carried out. The proposed solution may contribute to extending the service life of currently used compression ignition engines due to the improvement of the ecological properties of this type of drive sources.

The purpose of the study was the research concerning the emissions of limited exhaust gas components of the AVL research engine equipped with Common Rail injection system, fuelled with different biodiesel blends and diesel fuel as reference. In details, the engine was powered with mixtures of rapeseed methyl esters (RME) with DF in the volumetric ratios of 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60 and 50:50. The tests were performed at: 1200, 1700 and 2200 rpm and the torque T = 5…35 Nm (step 5 Nm). The analysis of the obtained results showed that the emissions of hydrocarbons (HC) from the tested engine fuelled with biodiesel are lower than that of diesel fuel. Carbon monoxide (CO) emissions are also lower, except for low rotational speeds and low engine load T = 5…20 Nm. As for nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions, it is also lower than that for the diesel fuel, except for high engine loads, in the range above 25 Nm, for each rotation speed of the engine load characteristics. Moreover, in this research it was confirmed that emission of particulate matter (PM) is also slightly reduced for the engine fuelled with tested blends.

Opis:
The article presents the laboratory tests results of the influence of the diesel oil content in a mixture with rapeseed oil on the operating parameters of a diesel engine with the CommonRail fuel supply system. Fuel mixtures with a rapeseed content of 0%, 50%, 70%, 100% were used. The article presents the results of tests carried out for various configurations of the object. The measurements included tests of exhaust gases: the content of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides as well as specific fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature. As a result of the research, it was noticed that the use of rapeseed oil causes a significant increase in fuel consumption and an increase in emissions. At a crankshaft speed of 2500 rpm and a torque generated by the engine crankshaft of 12 Nm, the specific fuel consumption for a 0% rapeseed content is 310 g/kWh. For the same engine operating conditions and the same rapeseed content of the fuel, the fuel consumption for 100% rapeseed content is 330 g/kWh. For the same engine operating parameters, analysis of the carbon dioxide content in the exhaust gas yields a value of 7.8x104 ppm for a rapeseed content of 0%. For the same engine operating conditions and for the oilseed rape content in the fuel is 100% 8.4x104 ppm. The mathematical models describing the effects of engine operating parameters and rapeseed oil content in the mixture on the observed values were created with the Scilab program. The degree of agreement of the determined mathematical models was checked by calculating the coefficient of determination (R2). The results are shown in 3D figures.

Natural gas is one of the potential combustion engine fuels whose proportion in the overall energy balance is expected to increase. Owing to some of its properties, its use requires a dual-fuel supply system; thus, the use of natural gas as a fuel for diesel engines is currently limited. Systems that supply gas fuel to diesel engines do not usually interfere with the engine control system. This solution significantly reduces system-installation costs. However, as demonstrated in the present study, it considerably changes the course of the combustion process, which increases thermal and mechanical loads. In this case, the combustion process can be controlled by changing the liquid fuel injection pressure or advancing the injection angle. This, however, requires interference with the engine control system.

Opis:
The paper presents a new methodology for testing common rail fuel injectors, which extends the standard diagnostic procedure to include the analysis of the resultant fields of dosed fuel. The calculations were made on the basis of Gaussian formulas, also known as the shoelace formula. Their implementation in the digital environment was convenient from the practical side, as it eliminated the need to modify the test bench software. Thanks to the easy modification, the presented algorithms can be used in testing fuel injectors of other types or generations, for which clear assessment and verification of the technical condition is sometimes difficult. It is not required for this to increase the number of measuring points of the active experiment, which is one of the greatest advantages of the proposed solution.

Opis:
In the present work, biofuels produced from different raw fatty materials have been proposed as a dominant fuel component in biodiesel-diesel fuel blends. Biofuels were produced from pork lard and rapeseed oil by alkali transesterification using methyl alcohol. Blends of biofuels in volumetric proportions of 60 and 80% of the biocomponent and the remaining part of the conventional fuel were used in a compression ignition engine designed for medium-duty vehicles. The experiments were conducted at two engine rotational speeds (1500 and 3000 rpm, respectively) and a set of load conditions (50, 100, and 200 Nm, respectively). The tests focused on engine efficiency parameters (brake-specific fuel consumption and brake fuel conversion efficiency) as well as exhaust gas emissions (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide were determined). The obtained results indicate that blends containing biocomponents produced from pork lard were characterized by superior fuel consumption and efficiency results, compared to blends containing biocomponents produced from rapeseed oil. In terms of exhaust emissions, biocomponents produced from pork lard were also characterized by lower emission of all of the examined components compared to rapeseed methyl ester-diesel blends. This study proposes that fuel components obtained from custom (animal) raw-fatty material can be an effective substitute for commonly used rapeseed oil methyl esters.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to determine changes in fuel delivery rate by common rail system injectors during their simulated operation on a test stand. Four Bosch injectors used, among others, in Fiat 1.3 Multijet engines were tested. The injectors were operated on a test rig at room temperature for 500 hours (more than 72 million work cycles). During the test, pressure and injection frequency were changed. Changes in the operating parameters were estimated based on obtained injection characteristics and effective flow area determined thereby. The observed changes in fuel delivery rate were compared with results of the surface analysis of control valves and nozzle needles. Despite the stated lack of wear, significant changes in the dynamics of injector operation were observed, particularly at short injection times. Small pilot injections cannot be corrected by the fuel injection control system because they do not affect the changes in torque; however, they do affect the combustion process. This creates conditions for increased emission of toxic exhaust components.

The paper presents the author's own method for testing piezoelectric common rail fuel injectors, which for many years were considered non-repairable components. This was mainly due to the lack of availability of spare parts and dedicated measuring equipment, enabling full diagnostics under test bench conditions. As a result, their workshop and laboratory servicing was very limited, as effective disassembly concerned basically only the plunger and barrel assembly (needle with nozzle) for selected reference models. The situation has now improved to such an extent that an author’s own regeneration procedure has been proposed with the replacement of the most important controls and actuators. The tests were carried out on the example of Siemens VDO Continental PCR 2.3 fuel injectors from one engine, listing the most important stages of this process, including the correction of fuel dosage and returns.

The paper presents the methodology of testing common rail fuel injectors, which consisted in extending the standard diagnostic procedures with the analysis of the resulting fuel delivery fields. The calculations were carried out in a popular spreadsheet, using Gauss's formulas (the so-called shoelace formula). Opis:
In the global fuel economy, new challenges concerning the use of alternative (vegetable) fuels in the internal combustion engines are starting to arise. The important issue is to meet the new limits on four main pollutant emissions from a diesel engines: CO (carbon monoxide), NOx (nitrogen oxides), HC (hydrocarbons) and PM (particulate matter). The design of a modern engine must be characterized by high efficiency, its dynamics of movement and durability. Dynamic development of plant fuels is forced by the new strategy of the global fight against the global warming. For these reasons, it is necessary to do research concerning the effects of the use of biofuels, including methyl esters, higher fatty acids of rapeseed oil for self- ignition engines. The current tests must concern the engines equipped with the latest Common Rail fuel injection systems. In the publication, the above-mentioned issues have been analyzed, and the results of tests of the basic injection process parameters have been presented. The AVL5402 engine was fueled with mixtures of diesel oil with RME ester of rapeseed oil produced by ORLEN Południe S.A. in Trzebinia. The impact of the fuel (v/v) RME content in the mixture with diesel oil on the injection process parameters such as: initial velocity of the injected fuel, critical speed of secondary fuel breakup, critical droplet diameter, microstructure of the fuel stream, droplet Sauter mean diameter, vertical angle of the fuel stream, have been justified. The impact of the fuel (v/v) RME content in the mixture with diesel oil on the above-mentioned parameters has been proved. During the tests, the engine worked on the load characteristics.
