Opis:
In this article I am dealing mainly with the following notions: “perception apparatus” (Weltbildapparat), “view of the world” (Weltbild, picture of the world) and “representation”. The first and the second ones belong to the basic notions in the vocabulary of K. Lorenz’s evolutionary epistemology, the third in cognitive sciences. I seek to demonstrate the relationships between them. This analysis is put in a broader context, indicating the relationships between expensively developing cognitive sciences and evolutionary epistemology (much less popular today). It is quite easy to determine what the perception apparatus is, however, it is harder to state what the view of the world, especially in its ontological aspect, is. Nevertheless, the view of the representation in the context of evolutionary epistemology points to the fact that this notion is still unclear and many representational features can be assigned to objects which, as it seems, are not representations according to cognitive sciences.

The contemporary research in neurobiology heavily rests on the application of complex experimental techniques. The primary aim is to determine the neuronal correlates of various mental phenomena such as abstract thinking, consciousness, free will etc. The application of the contemporary research in neurobiology to understand the nature and the function of the brain is currently having a strong impact on the classical philosophical discourse carried out in area of the philosophy of mind. In this article, a short analysis of one of the most widely used techniques in the neurobiological research is presented, namely, the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The particular emphasis is to point out to the conceptual difficulties that arise between the language used at the experimental level (spins, molecules) and how this language might acquire its meaning to eventually refer to the mental phenomena represented by appropriate neuronal structures revealed in the experiment. The apparent disunity will be most likely remedied as a more unified theory relating mental phenomena to the specificity of the most fundamental level of the physical reality becomes available.

We use the term “person” when we want to point out that human existence is unrepeatable and unique. The assumption that man is a person constitutes a basis for the belief in the dignity, efficacy, and responsibility of the human individual. Karol Wojtyla built his conception of the person in the context of theological and philosophical discussions. Even though Wojtyła’s conception has been given a great deal of scholarly attention, it is worthwhile to juxtapose it with contemporary anthropological theories that derive from cognitive sciences. Cognitivists usually base their theories on biological and sociological premises. Some conclusions arrived at in the area of the cognitive sciences lead to mind-brain reductionism, a theory in which the human being is regarded as a body endowed with the function of the brain and as an entity whose individual traits are shaped by its social and cultural environment. This position undermines the ideas of free will and the substantial singularity of the human person. However, debates with this position have worked out a non-reductionist alternative, a theory known as emergentism. This theory treats the human mind as a distinct faculty, one which emerges as a phase in the brain’s development. Emergentists base their reasoning on the assumptions that the body is a unity and that the mind is not identical with it. It is my belief that emergentism can be fruitfully applied to the dynamic understanding of the person put forward by Wojtyła in the middle of the 20th century.

Opis:
Do the traditional, commonsense and philosophical concepts of the soul have any place in the contemporary cognitive sciences, which start from the premise that everything is scientifically explainable using naturalistic categories? To answer this question we should mention that most cognitive naturalists today - philosophers and scientists - are materialists, and methodological materialism is probably universally accepted among scientists these days. It is very difficult to find a place in such a picture of the world for the soul as it appears in our commonsense picture of how things are. It is the tension between these two pictures that generates the contemporary problems connected with the soul. In order to try to resolve this tension we first describe the concept of the soul and its close connection with the organic body. Then we present a critical characterisation of two things: 1) the development of the empirical sciences - Galen, Descartes, Newton, Gall, Galvani - and the resulting eliminativistic implications for the philosophical concept of the soul; 2) a pair of naturalistic philosophical explanations of the soul-body problem: the nonreductionist view of the soul and the eliminative materialist view. The third part of the article involves giving a short answer to the question of how Aristotle's doctrine regarding the soul is based on his attempt to explain internal and external movement. After that we compare his explanation of these forms of movement with two kinds of contemporary neurological explanation: a) that of the neurologist R. Llinas, who, for explanatory purposes, postulates the existence of a theoretical (i.e. epiphenomenal) self; b) the more realistic explanation presented by the neurologist A. Damasio, who posits three different versions of the self, before trying to link them to corresponding parts of the human brain that, in turn, are closely connected with the body. It can then be shown that there are several similarities between Aristotle's conception of the soul and Damasio's cognitivist conception of the self, and that, because of the different starting points and explanatory goals involved, the contemporary concept of the self does not completely exclude the traditional concept of the soul.

This paper gives an overview of the potential integrative function of religion from the evolutionary standpoint. In order to fulfill those aims, the work first addresses the characterization of the use of an evolutionary paradigm for the study of religion. In this section, the most prominent evolutionary hypotheses of religion are discussed: the sociobiological view, memetic approach and cognitive perspective. Subsequently, the article also introduces several conceptual difficulties of the whole program of Darwinian religious study. In the final part of the paper, a couple of the most important religious mechanisms of social integration are shown.

The aim of this article is to discuss possible directions of interdisciplinary studies on obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is proposed that while examining the cognitive basis of the disorder one’s beliefs about the way cognitive processes work and the actual functioning of these processes should be taken into consideration, with executive functions in particular. Interdisciplinary studies combining psychiatry, clinical psychology and cognitive sciences may not only improve the understanding of the nature of cognitive processes, but also provide important data on how they are associated with specific symptoms of mental disorders. From a broader perspective such an approach may be potentially useful in developing new therapeutic techniques.

Although abstract nouns are introduced as a grammatical category in Serbian elementary schools at the beginning of the 5th grade, their status within the system is not as stable as it would appear at first. After analyzing the criteria for defining abstract words and concepts used in basic cognitive sciences – in linguistics, philosophy, and psychology – a conclusion emerges that these criteria are inadequate, and that the concrete: abstract relation it is not, as is often considered, binary. This further leads to recommendations

Opis:
The author discusses the question of reduction of consciousness. At the beginning she declares her externalistic and realistic position. Her externalism is seen through the nature of human action which demands both, intentionality and consciousness. But her argumentation against reduction of consciousness is made from an internalistic (not externalistic) point of view, and is supported by some results given by certain cognitive neuroscientists, like Susan Greenfield, for instance. In line with those neuroscientists she argues that consciousness (consisted in conscious states) is characterized by such features (like: spatial multiplicity, modality, single temporality) which in spite of their neuronal realizability, are not reducible. Another specific feature of consciousness (especially emphasized in philosophy by Kant and Husserl) is its ability to synthesize. In her consideration, the question of synthesis (contrary to Stanisław Judycki who used it in his argument against naturalistic conceptions of the mind) remains open. To conclude, she defends a many-dimensional strategy of research and thinks that despite the continuity between the account of the mind and the natural world, there is a place for nonnaturalized epistemology in which our rich mental life can be also viewed in certain autonomy.
