In this concluding paper to the special issue (SI) we seek to achieve three main goals. First, based on the papers it included in the SI, other recent publications as well as our own ideas, we point to the future directions of research into language learning strategies. Second, we comment upon the methodological issues that such research inevitably has to face, stressing in particular the need to combine a macro-and micro-perspective. Third, we emphasize the pedagogical orientation of such empirical investigations and make a plea for intensive efforts on the part of specialists to find ways in which the findings of LLS research can in fact inform classroom pedagogy.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to draw attention to the essence and values of learning and teaching children outside the school’s walls and to the pedagogy of the place, which refers to an alternative vision of the practice of outdoor education in an open space. The current theory and practice of education outside are influenced by cultural traditions and psychological theories of personal and social development. Taking into account the educational needs of contemporary young people struggling with serious social and ecological problems in a dynamically changing world, there is a need to re-invoke the idea of outdoor education and the idea of places that are the main dimension and problem of our being in the world.

Opis:
Despite the effort educators put into developing in students the critical writing and thinking skills needed to compose effective arguments, undergraduate college students are often accused of churning out essays lacking in creative and critical thought, arguments too obviously formulated and with sides too sharply drawn. Theories abound as to why these deficiencies are rampant. Some blame students’ immature cognitive and emotional development for these lacks. Others put the blame of lackadaisical output on the assigning of shopworn writing subjects, assigned topics such as on American laws and attitudes about capital punishment and abortion. Although these factors might contribute to faulty written output in some cases, the prevailing hindrance is our very pedagogy, a system in which students are rewarded for composing the very type of argument we wish to avoid — the eristic, in which the goal is not truth seeking, but successfully disputing another’s argument. Certainly the eristic argument is the intended solution in cases when a clear‑cut outcome is needed, such as in legal battles and political campaigns when there can only be one winner. However, teaching mainly or exclusively the eristic, as is done in most composition classrooms today, halts the advancement of these higher‑order inquiry skills we try developing in our students.

Opis:
Despite its positive impact on students’ learning and learning outcomes, studies documenting empirical evidence on how Flipped Classroom anchored in technology-mediated task can facilitate and promote students’ learning in post-Earthquake EFL writing pedagogy context remain scarce. To fill this void, this action research, documenting both quantitative and qualitative data, anchored in González-Lloret’s and Ortega’s (2014) technology-mediated task framework, aimed to garner students’ perceptions towards the use of FC-Mediated Task (FCMT) for learning essay writing; how they perceived this instructional approach compared to face-to-face only classes; and what challenges appeared while implementing this approach for the teaching and learning of writing in such a post-earthquake pedagogical context. The statistical evidence showed that the majority of the students positively perceived the use of FCMT for the learning of essay writing. The students also preferred the use of this approach to FTF only classes for learning to write essays in English in terms of the effectiveness and efficiency, engagement, language skills development and motivation. Pedagogical and technological challenges remained their prominent barriers in the implementation of this approach.

Opis:
Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is one of the fastest growing ELT sectors. To date, the teaching methods of MALL appear overly influenced by the desires of businesses, large institutions and technicians to produce easily measurable outcomes, rather than foundations built on upon pedagogical research that emphasises the importance of developing the communicative competence of learners. Findings from initial studies on MALL indicate not only the feasibility of using mobile devices for communicative purposes within classroom teaching, but also the opportunities they provide to implement a communicative approach more successfully than previously possible. Outworkings of this potential need to be established while the development of MALL remains at the “work in progress” stage.

Opis:
Drawing on the numerous benefits of integrating literature in the EFL classroom, the present paper argues that the analysis of a fictional work in the process of foreign language acquisition offers a unique opportunity for students to explore, interpret, and understand the world around them. The paper presents strong evidence in favour of reader-centered critical reading as a means of encouraging observation and active evaluation not only of linguistic items, but also of a variety of meanings and viewpoints. The authors propose a model of teaching critical thinking skills focused on the reader’s response to a literary work. The practical application of the method, which adopts the critical literacy approach as a tool, is illustrated through a series of activities based on the poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling.

Opis:
Pedagogical translanguaging has been extensively researched over the past decade. Yet, little is known about the attitudes of students towards this practice. Students constitute an integral part of classroom interactions and their learning process is significantly affected by teachers’ classroom discourse. This action research (AR) study, situated in a Chinese university Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) reading classroom and aided by lesson recordings and two sets of questionnaires, explores the translanguaging strategies employed by the teacher as well as the students’ attitudes to such strategies. Through incorporating feedback collected from students regarding the teacher’s modifications of language use, the study has demonstrated how the teacher mobilizes her full linguistic resources, in the form of translanguaging, to achieve pedagogical outcomes, which eventually leads to the establishment of a mutually beneficial classroom ecology. The study also indicates that advanced EFL learners, highly motivated to improve language proficiency and acquire subject content unanimously reject the traditional monolingual approach to teaching. The findings call for further research into the impact of pedagogical translanguaging on students’ learning process in multilingual classrooms.

The objective of this paper is twofold: to present an authentic collaborative project devoted to the transcreation of different versions of Polish legends and folk tales (with eventual publication in an academic journal), as well as to demonstrate the advantages of applying the transcreative approach to translation in translator training at MA level. The project in question was accomplished in the academic year 2018/2019 by a team of the 1st and 2nd year MA students, partly out of the classroom in an authentic setting and partly within the frames of a specialised collaborative translation course. The paper presents a new idea to teach translation, based on action research and the out-of-the-classroom approach to translator training, and includes a qualitative research case study of students’ views on the project as well as some pedagogical implications, such as the proposal to introduce collaborative transcreation activities into translator training curricula.

Abe (2010) argues that the Negotiation of Form (NF) instruction exerts positive effects on learning of connected speech by Japanese learners of English, finding that the progres achieved with NF was more significant than for the traditional treatment. The study reported here seeks to uncover the acquisitional value of NF in a Polish classroom. The study hypothesizes that NF, in comparison with the deductive teaching method, effectively promotes learning of assimilation, elision and weak forms. The hypothesis was tested by investigating production and perception of 50 Polish students of English. As for evaluating the effects of the two types of instructions, a classic pretest-posttest design was used. With regard to methodology, acoustic analysis was performed. The results demonstrate that in general, NF proved more effective than NNF. With regard to individual processes of connected speech, NF was more effective in production, whereas no such effect was found for perception.

Opis:
The present article focuses on the impact of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) research on English language pedagogy in relation to teaching materials and, more specifically, the way culture and different varieties of English are included in them. Moving beyond the traditional native speaker norm-based approach to teaching English requires a substantial reassessment and rethinking of teachers’ current beliefs, assumptions and classroom practices. The author seeks to investigate teachers' prevailing attitudes towards this development. The first part of the paper discusses some vital theoretical issues concerning ELF and their implications for teaching English with special attention paid to classroom materials. The concept of ELF-aware teaching is also introduced. The findings of the empirical study which aimed at investigating whether English language teachers in the Polish context follow ELF-aware pedagogy based on cultural diversity are presented then. More specifically, the respondents' attitudes towards ELT materials embracing various cultures and accents are discussed.
