Opis:
Freshwater red algae Hildenbrandia rivularis has been noted for the first time in central Poland near the Lodz agglomeration. Until now, this alga was recorded only in mountain and Polish Lowland areas. The wide range of habitat conditions influencing the occurrence for this protected species has been determined in the spring niche. The possible threat to habitat where H. rivularis occurs, is connected with construction and exploitation of the A2 highway

Cladoceran-based paleotemperature estimates for the Younger Dryas for ten sections of paleo-oxbow lakes, valley mires, and lacustrine sediments from central Poland are presented, and their potential usefulness to climatostratigraphy is described. Most of the changes observed in the cladoceran assemblages are responses to climate changes. The cladoceran-based temperature reconstructions reflect cold conditions during the Younger Dryas (YD) and allow a division of this period into two phases: an older colder phase, between 12,800 and 12,000 cal yrs BP, and a younger, warmer phase, between ca. 12,000 and 11,500 cal yrs BP. The geomorphological features of the study sites and local environmental forces are also taken into consideration. The cladoceran-inferred summer temperature estimates from all of the study sites correspond closely with the available climate reconstruction for the YD in central Europe.

Communities of hay meadows with Arrhenatherum elatius form phytocenoses of at least two plant communities: Arrhenatheretum elatioris – semi-natural habitats, and Tanaceto-Arrhenatheretum elatioris – ruderal habitats. The communities of tall oat-grass include approximately 150 species of vascular plants. In central Poland Tanaceto-Arrhenatheretum is the main habitat for many species characteristic of the Arrhenatherion alliance, including: Pastinaca sativa, Knautia arvensis, Tragopogon pratensis. Hay meadows are vulnerable (VU) components of vegetation of the characterized region. There is a need to verify syntaxonomic units within the Arrhenatherion alliance and phytosociological identifiers of Natura 2000 habitats – extensively used hay lowland meadows (6510).

Isolated marginal teeth and tooth crowns of Late Campanian and Late Maastrichtian mosasaurid reptiles (Squamata, Platynota) from the Wisła River valley area, central Poland, are described and illustrated. These comprise two Late Campanian taxa from Piotrawin quarry: Prognathodon sp. and Plioplatecarpinae sp. A., and four late Late Maastrichtian taxa from Nasiłów quarry: Mosasaurus cf. hoffmanni Mantell, 1829, M. cf. lemonnieri Dollo, 1889c, “Mosasaurus (Leiodon) cfr. anceps” sensu Arambourg (1952), and Plioplatecarpinae sp. B. In addition, the previously described fragmentary jaw with associated teeth of the Late Campanian age from Maruszów quarry (west of the Wisła River area), is reassigned to Mosasaurus cf. hoffmanni. This specimen suggests that M. hoffmanni or a closely related (ancestral?) species already appeared in Europe during the Late Campanian (well−documented European occurrences of M. hoffmanni are Late Maastrichtian in age). At least part of the described mosasaur material is likely to stem from periodic feeding in the area (broken−off or shed tooth crowns) or from floating carcasses (complete teeth and jaw fragments).

Opis:
Nine boreholes were drilled in the late eighties in central Poland to investigate the Middle Jurassic sedimentary successions. The boreholes were arranged in three lines (Ciechocinek, Brześć Kujawski and Wojszyce lines) running across three anticlines underlain by salt pillows. Long intervals of boreholes have been cored, often with 100% core recovery, thus enabling a detailed examination of sedimentary evolution. Sequences are composed of a full range of clastic rocks, from conglomerates through sandstones and heteroliths to shales. They are arranged in sedimentary cycles, predominantly regressive (coarsening upwards). These are interpreted as deposited in a shallow, wave/storm-dominated, shelf environment, each cycle being a result of progradation of fore-shore to near-shore heteroliths and sands over the shales of an open sea. The basin was probably non-tidal or microtidal. These essential (lower order) cycles, equivalents of the IVth order cycles in the world-wide scheme, are assembled in higher order cycles which resemble the IIIrd order cycles of that scheme. The bases of the higher order cycles are good lithostratigraphic markers, three of them being probably equivalents of chronostratigraphic boundaries (bases of the upper Aalenian, upper Bajocian and Bathonian, respectively). Correlation of borehole sections points to limited salt movement of the Ciechocinek and Wojszyce salt pillows during the Middle Jurassic. These are indicated, first of all, by thickness reductions seen in boreholes located above the tops of salt pillows. In the Ciechocinek area, the upward movement of salt occurred during the latest Bajocian/earliest Bathonian while in the Wojszyce area - during the early Bathonian. Coarser clastics were shed into the basin from the south-west, north-west (along the Mid-Polish Trough) and north-east during the Aalenian, and mainly from the north-east (from the East European Craton) in later times.

Tragophylloceras cf. loscombi (Sowerby) has been found in the Kaszewy 1 borehole (central Poland), in the Upper Pliensbachian strata (Margaritatus Zone, Subnodosus Subzone), assigned to the Drzewica Formation. Hitherto, all ammonite finds in the epicontinental Lower Jurassic in Poland have been restricted to Western Pomerania (NW Poland). This find points to a wider extent of the transgressive event occurring in the late Margaritatus Zone, following widespread regression at the beginning of this zone. Rapid and pronounced sea level changes in the early Late Pliensbachian confirms the hypothesis linking these changes with glacioeustasy.

Opis:
Sedimentary environments and palynofacies were identified in the Lower Cretaceous of central Poland. The study was based on lithological observations, sedimentological logging and palynological investigations in the following boreholes: Poddębice PIG2, Koło IG3 and IG4, Wągrowiec IG1, Sarnów IG1, Ciechocinek IG3, Mszczonów IG1, Korabiewice PIG1, Człuchów IG2, Klosnowo IG1 and Tuchola IG1. Palynological observations were correlated with sedimentological, lithofacies and paleogeographical data. Sedimentary environments and palynofacies were analysed in the vertical section, and spatially in different areas: in the central basin area, in the carbonate-clastic deposition zone, in the transitional zone (deltaic sedimentation) and in a zone of an active salt pillow. The following sedimentary environments were identified in the Lower Cretaceous: upper shoreface and lower-middle shoreface with transitions to an offshore-open marine shelf, delta (?delta front) passing up into distributary channel fills on a delta plain, presumed barrier and shallow-marine embayment, lagoon and shallow carbonate-siliciclastic shelf. In case of the absence of diagnostic features for exact determination of sedimentary environments, the environments were defined as generally marine or transitional (probably deltaic). A maximum flooding surface has been identified in the Poddębice PIG2 section, represented by a thin dark-grey marl bed which seems to be dated at the Berriasian/Lower Valanginian transition. The relationships between sedimentary environments and the characteristics of the palynofacies spectrum were determined, and a palynofacies pattern for the Lower Cretaceous of central Poland was proposed in a tabular form.

The paper reports a study of cyanobacterial diversity in a cold-water limestone limnocrene in Central Poland. Samples were collected from 1998 to 2000 and in June 2012. The morphology, population characteristics and species composition of the cyanobacteria assemblages were investigated, and the frequency of taxa was recorded. The large number of taxa identified (30) reflects the microhabitat heterogeneity of this spring. Some species considered epiphytes grew on limestone rocks. The occurrence of the majority of the most frequent taxa was related to the physicochemical characteristics of the spring, but none of them can be considered obligatory crenobionts characteristic of limestone springs. The studied spring is a unique ecosystem with an interesting cyanobacteria microflora whose occurrence is attributable to the spring’s water chemistry, low temperature and variety of microhabitats.

Opis:
The paper presents the data on an Eemian–Late Glacial sedimentary sequence from the Zwierzyniec site, central Poland. A number of boreholes document one or two organic layers that occur beneath one or two horizons of clayey and silty deposits of ice-dammed lakes. This study demonstrates to which extent the Zwierzyniec site can contribute to a better understanding of the palaeoenvironmental changes during the Eemian–Vistulian time-frame in central Poland. To study it, a multi-proxy approach was applied, involving: palynological and plant macrofossil analysis, study of rounding of quartz grains and morphology of their surface, and investigations of sand mineralogy and till petrography. The results show that a till bed is overlain by a sandy series corresponding to the glacial-interglacial transition. Either one or two distinct peaks of organic accumulation are evidenced by peat horizons. The lower horizon records spectra with hazel and hornbeam, and did, therefore, accumulate in the Eemian. Observed only in some boreholes, the upper peat horizon marks the Brørup (or the lower part of the Rederstall stadial) represented by forest-steppe conditions with patchy mosaics of larch and further transition into sedges and herbaceous taxa. Localized in between the two peat sequences, the sandy horizon marks a long-lasting aeolian transformation with weathering by frost in the Early Vistulian. Again, significant changes of the palaeoenvironmental regime occurred, and are manifested in the one or two horizons of the glaciolacustrine sediments. This corresponded to the last glaciation in the region, when the ice-dammed lakes formed during the Main Stadial.

Vistulian climatic changes are recorded in various sedimentary environments of central Poland, both in the extraglacial zone of the last glaciation and also in the area occupied by the last Scandinavian Ice Sheet, being reflected by palaeobotanical, palaeozoological, sedimentological and geochronological data. The most pronounced morphogenetic processes are linked to a glacial succession in the northern part of the study area, referred to the Upper Plenivistulian. For most of the study area, located in the extraglacial zone, the climatic changes are reconstructed from lake-bog, fluvial, slope and aeolian sedimentary successions. In central Poland, no site has been documented so far where there would be a continuous biogenic record through the whole Vistulian. Environmental changes recorded through the Vistulian include temperature, vegetation and the dynamics of morphogenetic processes, and sedimentary environments most useful for assessing changes occurring at that time may be indicated. The Early Vistulian is best recognized within biogenic deposits, as in the older part of Plenivistulian. The conditions in the earlier part of the Plenivistulian are best reported from fluvial and slope deposits with evidence of permafrost and of glacial conditions, though only in the northern part of the study area. Changing conditions of the Late Vistulian are expressed via well-documented morphogenetic processes occurring in all (except glacial) sedimentary environments, lake-bog and aeolian environments providing the most complete information about the nature of this period. Most of the Vistulian deposits reflect cold periods. There is a distinctive increase in periglacial impacts throughout the Plenivistulian with the apogee during the Upper Plenivistulian and interstadial warmings did not influence this trend. Each sedimentary environment provides significant data about the climate evolution, and processes playing a leading role vary according to the Vistulian stratigraphic unit. The consolidation of findings from regional research has provided new directions for further interdisciplinary studies.

Opis:
The article discusses the present situation and prospects for development of dairy production in Central . Poland. This region encompasses 8 administrative provinces, and it is an agricultural region boasting a higher level of milt -cattle breeding and milk production than the national average. Despite difficulties prevailing in agricultural production at the present time the overall production of milk was growing in the period under survey reaching the volume of 2.7 billion litre in 1979. About 65 per cent of the overall production finds its way to over HO dairy factories through an effective network of purchasing points, where it is further processed or sent out to other regions of the country suffering from milk deficit. The dairy industry in Central Poland supplies a wide assortment of dairy products to the market to the tune of over 6 billion zloty i.e. ca. 13 per cent of the national market supply. However, processing of milk constitutes the weakest link in dairy production in this region and it calls for expansion of processing capacities. It refers mainly to these administrative provinces where we can observe today a surplus of milk supply over possibilities of processing it. These provinces include: Sieradz, Piotrków and Kalisz. In the next ten years is should be expected that consumption ol milk products will grow. It is predicted that the average per capita annual consumption (measured according to raw material i.e. milk) will reach about 540 litre per person (at present It amounts to 420 litre. This poses a task before the daire industry of expanding production of milk, further increasing the share of centralized purchasing in production, and increasing processing capacities of dairy co-operatives. While accomplishing these taske it is necessary to seek such methods and ways which involve the lowest financial outlays.

Opis:
Four years of observations of radon, meteorology and atmospheric pollution was used to demonstrate the efficacy of combined diurnal and synoptic timescale radon-based stability classification schemes in relating atmospheric mixing state to urban air quality in Zgierz, Central Poland. Nocturnal radon measurements were used to identify and remove periods of non-stationary synoptic behaviour (13–18% of each season) and classify the remaining data into five mixing states, including persistent temperature inversion (PTI) conditions, and non-PTI conditions with nocturnal conditions ranging from well mixed to stable. Mixing state classifications were performed completely independently of site meteorological measurements. World Health Organization guideline values for daily PM2.5/PM10 were exceeded only under strong PTI conditions (3–15% of non-summer months) or often under non-PTI stable nocturnal conditions (14–20% of all months), when minimum nocturnal mean wind speeds were also recorded. In non-summer months, diurnal amplitudes of NO (CO) increased by the factors of 2–12 (3–7) from well-mixed nocturnal conditions to PTI conditions, with peak concentrations occurring in the morning/evening commuting periods. Analysis of observations within radon-derived atmospheric mixing ‘class types’ was carried out to substantially clarify relationships between meteorological and air quality parameters (e.g. wind speed vs. PM2.5 concentration, and atmospheric mixing depth vs. PM10 concentration).

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to establish a correlation between the liquid limit value obtained in the Casagrande apparatus (wL/cup) and in the cone penetrometer (wL/cone) for typical glacial sediments from west-central Poland and compare them with the correlation equations published in the literature. The following correlation was formulated: wL/cone = 0.91wL/cup+ 1.98. The analysis presented in this paper proves that deriving a generalized and universal relationship wL/cup/wL/cone for all cohesive soils, regardless of their origin, is very challenging and may not be reliable for use in the engineering practice. It is verified that, in the range of low values of liquid limit, the cone penetrometer gives higher values of wL than those obtained from the Casagrande apparatus. However, for the Polish postglacial soils analysed in this paper, the cone penetrometer underestimates the results in relation to the Casagrande apparatus above wL = 22%. For the purpose of this study, wL = 22% was defined as “the point of equivalent results” (wL/cone = wL/cup).

Herein, the results of studies conducted in the Łagiewnicki Forest in the city of Łódź (central Poland) in 2010–2012 are presented. These were the first long-term observations into myxomycetes in the Łagiewnicki Forest and in central Poland. Investigations were conducted using the route method for the entire forest complex (2010–2012). Additionally, twelve logs were selected in the “Las Łagiewnicki” forest reserve for detailed observations in 2011–2012; these logs belonged to four tree species: Betula pendula Roth, Carpinus betulus L., Quercus sp., and Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. In total, 1,561 specimens were collected and were classified into 96 taxa (91 species and five varieties). Three species (Diderma saundersii, Oligonema flavidum, and Didymium eximium) are new to the biota of Poland, while five (Arcyria stipata, Hemitrichia calyculata, Oligonema schweinitzii, Physarum flavicomum, and Physarum robustum) are included on the red list of rare myxomycetes in Poland. Stemonitopsis amoena is also classified as a rare species; to date, this species has been reported in one locality in Poland. The scale by Stephenson et al. was used to determine the frequency of occurrence of individual taxa; 55 taxa were classified as rare, nine as sporadic, 26 as common, and six as abundant taxa. Three ecological groups of slime molds were identified based on the type of substrate they colonized: lignicolous (54 taxa), foliicolous (seven taxa), and corticolous (two taxa). No preference for the substrate was noticed in a group of 33 taxa that occurred on different substrate types. The phenology of myxomycete occurrence was also analyzed; 49 taxa occurred throughout the entire vegetative season, while only single records of species that were found in specific months were noted. The biota collected in the “Las Łagiewnicki” forest reserve and that in a Łagiewnicki Forest segment outside it (of the same size and the same occurrence of plant communities as in the reserve) in 2011–2012 were also compared.

The maximum extent of the last ice sheet near Konin, Koło and Turek has been controversial. Investigations carried out in the Warta River has shed light on this problem. The Krzyżówki, Koźmin and Smulsko sites show fluvial deposits laid down in an extraglacial, periglacial environment during the Vistulian Glaciation. The northernmost site, Krzyżówki, shows an influence of proglacial waters, expressed by the supply of fluvioglacial material. The findings suggest that the last ice sheet did not overpass the Berlin-Warsaw Pradolina east of Konin and thus did not enter the Turek Plateau or the Uniejów Basin.

The revision of classification methodologies for determination of soil expansivity revealed that parameters most frequently used for this purpose are: the liquid limit, plasticity index and swelling parameters which also predominate in older systems of expansive soil assessment, regarded as classical. Seventy-nine soil samples, including Neogene clays and glaciall tills from Central Poland, with a wide range of plasticity were examined for a comparative analysis of soil expansivity with a use of eight empirical methods. The study revealed that Neogene clays are mostly highly and very highly expansive, while glacial tills exhibit low to medium expansivity. Compared to classifications considering soil mineralogy indicators, those correlated solely to Atterberg limits and related parameters were found to overestimate soil expansivity. It is evident that the classifications are in better agreement for glacial tills than for clays. The comparison of mineral composition measured and predicted from swelling tests yielded consistent results.

Present status of a postglacial relict – Salix myrtilloides L. was investigated in north central Poland at 27 localities. Consequently 3 sites were confirmed, 4 were not confirmed, and the remaining 20 were considered to be extinct. In comparison to the historical distribution, ca. 74% of the sites existing 50 years ago do not exist today in the studied region. The confirmed populations were found near Oporówek (ca. 1600 stems), Rakowiec (ca. 100) and Bobrowo (15). At three sites confirmed in this study, the existence of vigorous hybrids between S. myrtilloides and S. aurita L. (S. ×onusta Besser) were observed. The most important threats to Salix myrtilloides L. populations in the studied region were assessed to be hybridization with other commonly occurring willow species, site isolation and habitat destruction. Natural habitat protection with adequate buffer zone and gene pool protection in a form of plantations was suggested as a conservation strategy. As an alternative strategy active protection ‘insitu’ was proposed based on cutting competitive common species of willows.

Effects of agricultural production in the analysed group of eight administrative provinces of Central Poland are favourably affected by: suitable geographical situation in central part of Poland with easy access to absorptive market for agricultural produce, well developed network of roads, sculpture of the land, long vegetation period, quite considerable manpower resources, and other factors. On the other hand, on the negative side there must be listed unfavourable soils (with the exception of the administrative provinces of Płock and Włocławek), low precipitation, bad quality of beaten tracks, low density of railway lines, and poor capital intensity in agriculture. Effects of agricultural production assessed on the basis of intensify of agricultural utilization of land and animal breeding, crop yields and effectiveness of animal production, ratio of the marketable surplus to the total output etc. are best in the administrative provinces of Włocławek, Płock, Kalisz, and Sieradz, and lowest - in those of Piotrków, and Skierniewice. Typically rural character of agricultural production in the urban province of Łódź despite proximity of the absorptive market for agricultural produce is quite amazing here. The above mentioned group of administrative provinces of Central Poland accounts for a much bigger share of the national food production than its share of arable land. Absence of land reserves poses a requirement of better and better utilization of the available land resources through technological, social, and economic modernization of the whole agricultural production in Central Poland.

A numerical analysis of the phytosociological relevés from ancient and recent woodland on a mesic forest site in central Poland was carried out. Three groups of forest stands were recognised: planted with Pinus, recent and ancient oak-hornbeam Tilio-Carpinetum. The species of ancient woodland occurred mainly in ancient oak-hornbeam forest stands, however some ferns: Dryopteris carthusiana, D. dilatata and D. filix-mas, and an orchid species Epipactis helleborine, are to be found mainly or exclusively in recent forests. The occurrence of ancient forest species in recent woods may be putatively explained by long-distance wind dispersal or by the thriving in situ in unrecognised small wood patches. Twelve ancient woodland indicators (i.e. 36% of a total number found in the region under study) occur exclusively in ancient woodland. It underlines the role of passive species protection in the maintenance of the regional species diversity.

Two diploid isolates of Armillaria gallica and 143 diploid isolates of A. solidipes were obtained from 145 samples of rhizomorphs, fruit bodies and infected wood of sessile oak and Scots pines from 5–10-year-old Scots pine plantations in three Forest Districts located 100–350 km apart in west-central Poland. Based on pairings among the 145 isolates, 18 somatic compatibility groups (genets) of A. solidipes were distinguished in the three plantations. Sequencing of ITS1/2 rDNA of 18 isolates representing the 18 genets delineated four nuclear haplotypes. This suggests that many of the A. solidipes genets are closely related and were possibly established by sib-related basidiospores. With a few exceptions there was general geographical specialization of genets but not haplotypes. Geographical specialization of genets and the dominance of single haplotypes suggest that the A. solidipes population results from clonal rather than sexual reproduction. Sequencing of the ITS1/2 and IGS-1 rDNA showed small nucleotide diversity in ITS1/2 rDNA and much more diversity in IGS-1 rDNA of the isolates of A. solidipes studied. However, none of these regions has sufficient resolution for the clear differentiation of A. solidipes from A. borealis. The sequences of the EF 1-alpha gene showed high interspecific variability in Armillaria species and very low intraspecific variability in A. solidipes. This gene is the most appropriate for reliable identification of biological species and subgroups of Armillaria. Its application is the most useful in ecological and epidemiological studies of Armillaria.

Re-structuring of rural spaces is essential for continued sustainable development of these areas. The space-management tool of land consolidation can be used to obtain desirable structural changes, but only if it is systematically implemented and becomes a permanent element of long-term rural management policies of provincial self-governments. Land consolidation and exchange measures should be introduced comprehensively and should be coupled with post-consolidation development of land. Only then can they contribute to the multifunctional development of rural areas. In our previous studies, in order to identify the areas with the greatest defects in the spatial structure which needed land consolidation and exchange most urgently, we carried out the investigations which allowed us to select appropriate factors for identifying such groups of villages. The ranking was established using Hellwig’s synthetic index of development and the zero unitarisation method. This article presents the results of the research carried out in 36 villages of the Opoczno commune, occupying a total area of 16,590.51 ha, divided into 41,990 cadastral plots.

Opis:
This study from the Szczerców field of the Bełchatów open-cast mining complex, central Poland, reveals the local geomorphic and stratigraphic history of the Krasówka river palaeovalley – a major western tributary of the river Widawka. The data are from the western flank of the N-trending palaeovalley and the study combines detailed lithofacies analysis of outcrop sections, sediment petrology, AMS measurements and palynological evidence. Radiocarbon dates are of crucial importance for the reconstruction of the palaeovalley history. The study contributes to a better understanding of the response of the Central European river systems to the Vistulian Pleniglacial conditions. The Vistulian Pleniglacial sedimentation in the study area commenced with the accumulation of the latest Eemian to earliest Weichselian (≥45 ka) deposits by sheetwash processes in a local karstic topographic depression. The Krasówka river then formed to the east and shifted farther eastwards, but later approached twice the study area with a net aggradation prior to 43 ka BP – flooding it with overbank deposits. The river subsequently incised by nearly 20 m around 40 ka BP and began to fill in its valley by aggradation around 35 ka BP, while migrating eastwards and markedly decreasing its flooding capacity from 33 to 24 ka BP. The fluvial system was rejuvenated around 21 ka BP, with some initial erosion, and kept filling its valley by aggradation while flooding the valley flank. The river after filling its valley continued to aggrade, but gradually ran out of vertical accommodation and migrated westwards. The fluvial activity at this stage was increasingly accompanied by aeolian sedimentation. Once the Mid-Weichselian Pleniglacial came to an end around 14.5 ka BP, the Krasówka river had re-incised by nearly 5 m and assumed its present-day altitude in response to the post-glacial regional isostatic rebound of crustal basement.

The paper presents the history of the protection of trees with special values, the current state of monument trees and the preliminary description of trees meeting the minimal circumference criteria to be regarded as natural monuments in the Kampinos National Park (KNP). The study was conducted in the years 2017–2019. In the KNP, there are 69 living trees with a status of natural monuments. Most of them are oaks – 56 specimens, Scots pine – 6 specimens, small-leaved lime – 5 specimens and European hornbeam and European ash – 1 specimen each. Among all, 27 trees grow individually and the other 42 grow in 7 groups. About 200 trees were recognised as meeting the minimal circumference criteria to be regarded as natural monuments. The thickest size tree in the KNP is the black poplar with a circumference of 805 cm, growing in the enclave of Ruska Kępa, and the thickest monument tree in the KNP area is Dąb Kobędzy (Kobendza Oak) with a circumference of 582 cm. Almost a half of the living monument trees (34 specimens) are situated in Kampinos Forest District. In Kromnów, there are 20, and in Laski Forest District 15 specimens of monument trees are mapped. Living monument trees were found in 15 (out of 17) forest subdistricts. The highest number of monument trees was found in Rózin Forest Subdistrict (16) and in Wilków Forest Subdistrict (10). The lowest number – one specimen per forest subdistrict – was found in six forest subdistricts (Dąbrówka, Grabina, Janówek, Krzywa Góra, Rybitew and Zamczysko). In total, there are around 300 specimens of natural monuments and trees meeting the minimal circumference criteria to be regarded as natural monuments, which means that there is one tree of this category for each 125 ha surface of the KNP.

From a geological and palaeogeographical point of view, the area of the Adamów Graben in the vicinity of Turek ranks amongst the best known in central Poland, with several opencast mines located here where lignite was exploited for 57 years. These large-surface exposures provide a good opportunity for detailed geological studies of strata of Late Cretaceous to Holocene age. However, the present research focuses mainly on those deposits, forms and structures that have been most thoroughly examined and are best exposed. These are Cretaceous marls and gaizes, Paleogene ‘blue clays’ and the ‘Koźmin Gravels’, Neogene sandstones, as well as the Quaternary glacial ‘Lake Koźmin’, involutions and ‘Koźmin Las’. Some of these, e.g., the ‘Koźmin Gravels’ and ‘Koźmin Las’, are not known from other Polish territories. Furthermore, results obtained by the authors over a period of nearly 30 years also include data on palaeogeographical changes across some Cenozoic intervals, especially during the early Oligocene and late Weichselian.

The recent stratigraphical and paleontological research in the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary sequence in central Poland confirmed a validity of the hitherto accepted local ostracod zonation. Six ostracod zones have been compared with the zones distinguished in England, France and Germany. From 51 ostracod species and subspecies recorded in the sequence of superposing marine-brackish and brackish-fresh-water sediments the author describes the following new species and subspecies: Limnocythere biverrucosa, Timiriasevia polonica, Cypridea aleksandrowiensis, C. wandae, C. binodosa polonica, C. dunkeri spinosa, C. granulosa polonica, C. lata polonica, C. obliqua polonica, C. prealta iuvencula and C. tumescens granulosa.
W pracy ukazano zróżnicowanie zespołów małżoraczkowych w purbeku Kujaw (figs. 1—4, tabele 1—2) oraz przedstawiono opisy i ilustracje (pls. 1—8) 4 nowych gatunków (Limnocythere biverrucosa, Timiriasevia polonica, Cypridea aleksandrowiensis, C. wandae) i 7 podgatunków (Cypridea binodosa polonica, C. dunkeri spinosa, C. granulosa polonica, C. lata polonica, C. obliqua polonica, C. prealta iuvencula, C. tumescens granulosa). Bielecka i Sztejn 1966). Analogicznie do purbeku Anglii (por. Anderson 1985), w polskim purbeku wyróżniono zespoły małżoraczków charakterystyczne dla trzech faz ekologicznych: brakiczno-słodkowodnej fazy C, morsko-brakicznej fazy S oraz hypersalinarnej fazy E. Na Kujawach przeważają małżoraczki fazy S (fig. 2). W polskim purbeku obserwuje się zdecydowaną przewagę małżoraczków nad otwornicami. Stwierdzono tu obecność następujących nadrodzin małżoraczków. Cytheracea, Darwinulacea i Cypridacea. Szczególnie wiele rodzajów należy do Cytheracea. Niektóre małżoraczki, jak Klieana alata Martin, Rhinocypris jurassica (Martin), Cypridea prealta prealta Bielecka i C. lata polonica subsp. n. występują masowo i w kolekcji liczą od około tysiąca do kilku tysięcy skorupek. Inne są reprezentowane zaledwie przez kilka lub kilkanaście egzemplarzy, do nich należą M. (Macrodentina) maculata Malz, M. (Dictyocythere) aff. mediostricta transfuga Malz i Protocytheropteron brodiei (Jones). Otwornice, to nieliczne formy zlepieńcowate. Wśród nich najlepiej jest reprezentowany rodzaj Ammobaculites, wykazujący bardzo dużą tolerancję na zmiany zasolenia w środowisku.

Opis:
Tithonian (= “Middle Volgian”) carbonate rocks are exposed in Owadów-Brzezinki quarry 19 km southeast of Tomaszów Ma-zowiecki, central Poland. In the upper part of the Sławno Limestone Member, chitinoidellids have been identified in thin sections from three samples, only. Therefore, the documented part of the Chitinoidella Zone in Owadów-Brzezinki quarry is about 0.3 m thick. The identified chitinoidellid taxa suggest that this assemblage represents the Upper Tithonian Boneti Subzone. The Chitinoidella Zone occurs at the top of Unit I and correlates with the uppermost interval of the Zarajskensis Horizon (Matyja, Wierzbowski, 2016). Other microfossils identified in the Chitinoidella Zone consist of Saccocoma sp. and benthic foraminifera of the genus Planularia. Calcareous dinoflagellate cysts (Cadosina semiradiata semiradiata Wanner and C. cf. semiradiata semiradiata Wanner) occur above the chitinoidellid assemblage, in the strata corresponding to the Gerassimovi Subzone of the Virgatus Zone (Matyja, Wierzbowski, 2016). Calcareous nannofossils are extremely rare in the thin sections studied; only one small specimen was seen, identified as Rhombolithion minutum (Rood et al., 1971) Young et Bown 2014. In contrast, microbial filaments are frequently observed in the studied thin sections. Their shape and pattern are reminiscent of some recent Cyanobacteria of the order Nostocales, however the Tithonian microbial filaments are much thinner.

The Łanięta site with fossil lake deposits is situated just in front of the maximum extent of Vistulian Glaciation ice. Palynological analysis shows that lake accumulation lasted through the Eemian Interglacial and almost the whole Early Vistulian, the longest record of this time interval in this part of Poland. Two warm interstadial-rank oscillations (Brörup and Odderade) and two stadials have been distinguished during the Early Vistulian. The older of these is correlated with the Herning Stadial while younger one equates with the Rederstal Stadial of the German succession.

A new borehole in Rożce (SW Mazovian Lowland) drilled in 2012, combined with a wide variety of research methods (palaeomagnetism, palynological analysis, studies of plant macroremains and textural features of deposits) shed new light on the age and stratigraphic position of the Early Pleistocene deposits, formerly assigned as the Lower Pleistocene. The study focuses on the deposits from 50.7-104.0 m depth, between glacial till of the Nidanian Glaciation (ca. 0.9 Ma) and the Poznań Clays (ca. 5.322 Ma). The deposits situated directly underneath the till (50.7-60.2 m) are related to the Nidanian Glaciation and show a reversed polarity and correlate with the end of the Matuyama Epoch. The deposits from 60.2-104.0 m depth were accumulated during the Early Pliocene, i.e. approximately 5.332-4.6 million years ago. They appear to correlate with the middle part of the Gilbert Palaeomagnetic Epoch and thus they are considerably older than previously thought. The cored section indicates a stratigraphic gap of about 3.5 Ma from the Lower Pliocene to the first advance of the Scandinavian ice sheets into Poland, which are thought to have occurred in the early Middle Pleistocene. The analysed deposits accumulated under variable climatic conditions showing two periods with significant aridity alternated with two periods of increased humidity. Deposits of the arid periods contain no pollen, butaeolian sand quartz grains are found. During periods of more humid climate the area was covered by various types of mixed forest.

Boulders used in building the stone walls of the megalith’s construction had been processed by means of “flaking” technique, rock-cutting technology, mixed “flaking” and rock-cutting technologies, and by drilling. Initial research has revealed the presence of Cretaceous and Jurassic flint stones in glaciofluvial gravel in the vicinity of the site. They underwent preliminary technological, mineralogical and geochemical analysis. The research was conducted by means of modern mineralogical methods, including polarised and scanning microscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy.

It is observed increasing of abandoned land in Poland in last decade of 20th century. The part of abandoned land is usually covered by birch tree community. The entrance of birches, especially on pure sandy area, changes properties of soil. The samples of soil horizons, litter in different stages of decomposition and leaves from birch trees, were taken into analysis. The role of birch was analysed also in comparison to arabie land, abandoned land without trees and different ages birch trees communities. After the entrance birch trees soil profiles were enriched in nitrogen and elements such as aluminium, iron, cadmium, lead, cobalt, zinc, which were moved from soil or come from atmospheric load and were accumulated in litter or humus horizon. Compared to arabie land, some elements (for example calcium) had lower concentration under birch trees. After several years without fertilization the relationship between elements were changed. In early stages (until 10 years) in litter horizons potassium prevails calcium, later - calcium prevails potassium . Birch trees made soil environment more natural compared to arable land.

Opis:
Palynological analysis of the 1st mid-Polish lignite seam (MPLS-1) of the Drzewce deposit (Konin region, central Poland) was used as the data source for palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic interpretations. Lignites of the 1st group developed in the middle Miocene, during and shortly after the last peak of the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum, over a large area of Poland, and they are the youngest of the main Neogene lignite seams in Poland. In the Konin region, these lignites have a relatively significant thickness (up to 20 m) and therefore they are (or were in the past) exploited in several open-pit mines. A total of 36 palynological samples from the 6.3-m-thick seam of the Drzewce opencast mine was studied in detail. Palynological analysis of the lignite seam indicates that the area was overgrown by palustrine wetland communities, similar in composition to modern pocosins. The most characteristic elements of them were shrubs in the Ericaceae family. The climate at that time was warm temperate and humid. The estimated mean annual temperature (MAT) for the lignite seam at Drzewce is 15.7–17.8 °C. Comparison with other palynofloras from the MPLS-1 shows that the climate during the formation of the group of seams was more or less homogenous across the entire Polish Lowlands. Sedimentological data and results of palynological studies (including NPPs) at Drzewce indicate that the palaeomires were relatively distant from the channels of the river system in the Konin Basin. The fossil fungal assemblage indicates dense vegetation on damp, swampy soils and the presence of small, shallow-water bodies, with a variable water level or even periodic reservoirs, existing only during the wet season or after floods. In small, flooded depressions, such as the pools in bogs, filamentous green algae occurred. The presence of zygospores of the desmids Desmidiaceaesporites cosmarioformis most probably indicates relatively nutrient-poor (ombrotrophic) conditions. Fluctuations in the frequency of individual plant taxa (including Sequoia and Sciadopitys) are likely to reflect changes in water level and trophic conditions.

Opis:
Bedding-parallel calcite veins in Devonian rocks from the southern part of the Holy Cross Mountains Fold Belt in central Poland occur as tabular bodies on shallow dipping as well as vertical Late Paleozoic map-scale and mesoscopic fold limbs. The syntaxial and antitaxial bedding parallel veins contain kinematic indicators such as rotated blocks, fibre boundary steps, boudin trains, beef-like structures and congruous steps. These structures show a sense of movement consistent with the flexural slip typical of folding resulting from buckling during layer-parallel shortening. We propose the mechanism of the gradual formation of the veins and the progression of fabric development which is mostly consistent with an increasing dip angle of the fold limbs and their gradual deformation. Textures of the veins and kinematic indicators within the veins point to the syntectonic growth of calcite during the Late Paleozoic buckle folding in the Holy Cross Mountains Fold Belt.

The authigenic xenotime occurs primarily as overgrowths around/on zircon in siliciclastic rocks. Moreover, this mineral is characterized by the large size of the overgrowths reaching 50 μm long and 20 μm wide. The presence of pyritecoated zircon/xenotime aggregates indicates that the xenotime formed prior to hydrothermal quartz-pyrite mineralization. The apparent lack of xenotime and vein pyrite in the tuff-bearing series, compared to the other two series displaying hydrothermal signature (pyrite, hematite, nacrite, jarosite), as well as considerable variations of the xenotime overgrowths in size and morphology, and their dominant irregular patchy-zonal microtexture may provide evidence for direct precipitation of this mineral from hydrothermal fluids.

The results of geodetic measurements conducted in the Inowrocław salt dome area are presented in this paper. The main aim of these studies was to determine changes in the rock mass exerted by geological processes. These processes have led to the changes in the salt dome geometry and physical properties of surrounding rocks. Degradation of the salt-gypsum cap of the dome strongly depends on the hydrogeological conditions and, particularly, on tectonic structure which has had a bearing on the uplift of the ground surface. The principal goal of the paper is to present the results of geodetic levelling surveys in the Inowrocław area wherein the mining activity was terminated in 1991. These results point to a progressive salt uplift in some areas, showing a constant rate throughout the study period.

The paper presents the results of research into the plant macrofossils found in the tectonic Kleszczów Graben, within Mesopleistocene sandy sediments. A number of samples were collected at eight locations from river sediments containing variously sized fragments of plants, mostly from greenish sands overlying Neogene sediments. The structural characteristics of the sediments show a cyclic record of the formation of point bars, their washing out at supercritical conditions, and their aggradation by fine-grained material during flow waning. Based on lithological and structural studies, it has been demonstrated that the sands accumulated in an environment of a meandering river, whose valley bottom was covered with fairly dense vegetation, inhibiting the influx of mineral material to the floodplain from the surroundings – the valley or glacial plateau slopes. The aim of further analysis was to identify the plant genera of the individual macrofossils (about 40 specimens). The most numerous macrofossils were observed in the middle layers of the profile, within sandy megaripple structures, where mostly fragments of Fraxinus and Acer wood were present. In other layers, several fragments of Pinus and three pieces of Populus wood were identified. Additionally, young stems of dicotyledonous plants and fragments of rhytidome (the outer bark of a tree) were found. The results are discussed in combination with considerations on the deposition of the Czyżów Complex in the Bełchatów outcrop, and on the occurrence of local flora.

Carboniferous sandstones and shales encountered in deep boreholes drilled in central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., represent a pseudoflysch i.e. they show facies features of flysch and, simultaneously, are of cratonic provenance. Clastic sediments were derived from a peripheral bulge formed within the East European Craton as a result of stresses exerted by the accretion/thrust wedge advancing up the marginal part of the craton. In central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., a Variscan foredeep existed. The foredeep was the depositional site of interfingering exo- and pseudoflysch which, from a geodynamic point of view, are equivalent to an outer molasse. Huge masses of Carboniferous deposits (generally corresponding to flysch) from southwestern and central Poland successively represent, moving from SW to NE, Variscan ortho-, exo- and pseudoflysch.

Opis:
Radiolarian assemblages from the uppermost Oxfordian (Hypselum Zone) deposits of two sections (Katarowa Góra and Bobrowniki) in the Wieluń Upland (central Poland) are studied for the first time. The overall composition of the assemblages is characterized by low taxonomic diversity, with many individuals of spherical morphotypes, with dominance of the family Williriedellidae and Gongylothoracidae, among the nassellarians. The radiolarians show features mostly of the Northern Tethyan fauna. Additionally, more cosmopolitan forms consisting of spumellarians and of cold water representatives of the family Parvicingulidae appear in the middle and upper parts of the Hypselum Zone. This change in the character of the radiolarian assemblages suggests Boreal influences into the Submediterranean basin related to activity of sea currents, which have been stimulated by climatic changes during the latest Oxfordian.

Opis:
Bełchatow Lignite Mine is the largest producer of lignite in Poland with estimated coal reserves of 700 million tons. The mine excavates two lignite deposits Bełchatow and Szczercow. The Szczercow lignite deposit occupies the western part of the Kleszczow trough, located in the Polish Lowlands. The main part of the lithostratigraphic profile of the Szczercow lignite deposit is a multilayer coal complex, whose thickness varies from 1 to 180 m, with the overburden ratio of 2.84:1. The average thickness of the balance lignite amounts to 40 m. The carbonaceous coefficient of the coal complex in the predominant part of the deposit is over 70%, but locally reaches even up to 100%. Lignite from the Szczercow deposit is of an average technological quality. It typically contains 51.7% of total moisture, 23.6% of ash on dry basis, 3.36% total sulphur recalculated to dry basis, and a net calorific value of 7.33 MJ/kg. Random reflectance (R0) is 0.27% with huminite group macerals averaging at 85%. According to the International Classification of In-Seam Coals and Low Rank Coal Utlization, the technological code of the lignite from the Szczercow deposit is: humic low-rank C (orto-lignite) 19 51 23 33. Similarities between the quality parameters of lignite from the Szczercow and Bełchatow deposits will allow it to be burned in the Bełchatow lignite-fired power plant and may give a chance to extend its activity after the completion of lignite mining from the Bełchatow deposit.

The evolutionary changes of the Early Cretaceous (Valanginian) marine gastropod Rissoina (Buvignieria) sp. from Wąwał (central Poland) show a pattern typical of the Ancient Lake Concept. Its morphology is stable during period of unstable conditions and starts to change gradually when the environment becomes stable. The linear character of the evolutionary changes of Rissoina sp. and lack of evolution among co−occuring gastropods suggests that the rate of evolution was controlled by intrinsic factors, not the environment.

Ornamental tropical fish are kept in home aquaria for many decades. It is often that fish that grown too big or are unwanted by the owner are released into natural environment. Most tropical fish have zero chance for survival in polish natural water bodies not only through the winter, but in many cases even through summer months. There are several reports of non-native fauna species in our waters. Successful introductions took places in few artificial canals with thermally polluted waters namely pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) in warm canal of Odra river, dramatically changing local ecosystems. Object of this paper is Silver arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) caught in hand aquarium net in Powsinkowskie Lake. The lake is one of the most important water reservoir in most urbanized part of Poland – its capital Warsaw. Because of its location in highly urbanized area it is the reservoir of intense uncontrolled introduction of unwanted fish. Most tropical alien species may not be able to survive in our local waters but may cause severe local ecosystem imbalances for example they may possibly be hosts to pathogenic organism that our fish have no immune system tuned to. Therefore places like Powsinkowskie Lake is a good place for scientist to perform periodic inventory to determine the species composition, fish numbers and condition.

Opis:
Several closely-spaced phosphorite beds stand out at the Albian–Cenomanian transition in the mid-Cretaceous transgressive succession at the northeastern margin of the Holy Cross Mountains, central Poland. They form a distinctive condensed interval of considerable stratigraphical, palaeontological, and economic value. Here, we correlate the classical section at Annopol with a recently investigated section at Chałupki. We propose a new stratigraphic interpretation of the phosphorite interval, based on lithological correlations, Rare Earth Elements and Yttrium (REE+Y) signatures of phosphorites, age-diagnostic macrofossils, and sequence stratigraphic patterns. This interval has long been considered as exclusively Albian in age. However, new macrofossil data allow us to assign the higher phosphorite levels at Annopol and Chałupki, which were the primary target for the phosphate mining, to the lower Cenomanian. In terms of sequence stratigraphy, the phosphorite interval encompasses the depositional sequence DS Al 8 and the Lowstand System Tract of the successive DS Al/Ce 1 sequence. The proposed correlation suggests that lowstand reworking during the Albian–Cenomanian boundary interval played an important role in concentrating the phosphatic clasts and nodules to exploitable stratiform accumulations. Our conclusions are pertinent to regional studies, assessments of natural resources (in view of the recent interest in REE content of the phosphorites), and dating of the fossil assemblages preserved in the phosphorite interval. On a broader scale, they add to our understanding of the formation of stratiform phosphorite deposits.

A relatively rich assemblage of starfish is recognised from the talus facies of an Upper Jurassic (lower Kimmeridgian) biohermal, sponge-cyanobacterial build-up from the Wapienno/Bielawy succession exposed in a salt-dome anticline in Kuyavia region, north-central Poland. The paper presents 8 taxa belonging to 4 genera (one new to science): Boxaster gen. nov., Noviaster Valette, 1929, Tylasteria Valette, 1929, Valettaster Lambert, 1914, and 4 families: Astropectinidae Gray, 1840, Goniasteridae Forbes, 1841, Sphaerasteridae Schöndorf, 1906 and Stauranderasteridae Spencer, 1913. Only a very few representatives of some of these taxa have formerly been reported from the Jurassic of Poland. Two species are new: Valettaster planus sp. nov. and Boxaster wapienensis gen. et sp. nov. The Jurassic starfish assemblage recognised from the Wapienno/Bielawy succession is interpreted as an offshore starfish fauna with the admixture of allochtonous shallow-water taxa. The lithology of the source deposits indicates their transport by storm agitation and/or mass movements. This fact strongly influenced the preservation state, all collected plates being disarticulated and most of them abraded.

Samples of drinking water collected in Warka-Grójec region of central Poland were tested for the presence of pesticides. Data obtained from analysis of water samples will be used for future epidemiological and environmental studies in the region. Samples were collected during spring and autumn of 2002-2003 from dug wells, deep wells and water mains in 81 randomly-selected rural households scattered throughout this region of extensive agriculture. The concentration of pesticides from four main chemical groups was determined by gas chromatography: organochlorines (lindane, DDT, methoxychlor), triazines (atrazine, simazine), organophosphates (acephate, diazinon, fenitrothion) and pyrethroids (alpha-cypermethrin, deltamethrin). Two-year monitoring of drinking water samples indicated the presence of DDT and methoxychlor contamination. Pyrethroids were generally not detected, with the exception of alpha-cypermethrin found in only a few samples. Triazines were also found in water samples collected in the course of the study with higher incidence during spring period. Organophosphates were by far the most common contaminants of drinking water in this region. Almost all samples were contaminated by signifi cant amounts of fenitrothion. The present study reveals an urgent need for systematic monitoring of drinking water quality in regions of intensive agriculture, since they are highly vulnerable to pesticide contamination. Consumption of pesticide-contaminated water may have a negative impact on the population living in this area, which also requires scientifi c assessment.

The Złota Góra hills (Central Poland) have been variously interpreted as a kame, a sandur and as different types of moraine. Due to their morphology and internal structure, the Złota Góra hills differ, however, from typical depositional glacigenic landforms in the European lowlands. Morphologically, the Złota Góra hills consist of numerous asymmetrical and oval hills of various sizes. The deposits show a wide variety of lithofacies, which are diagnostic for debris flows, hyperconcentrated flows, sheetfloods, braided rivers, deltas and ephemeral lakes. The combination of such deposits is characteristic of an environmental setting including both an end moraine fan (debris flows, hyperconcentrated flows, sheetfloods and ephemeral lake deposits) and a sandur (braided river, sheetfloods, and delta or ephemeral lake deposits). Therefore, these hills must be interpreted as representing an end moraine/sandur massif. The hills were probably formed subaerially by meltwater in an interlobate area of the retreating Scandinavian ice sheet.

The objective of the work was to evaluate the effect of hydrothermal conditions on oats yields produced in east-central Poland. Hydrothermal conditions were determined based on the Sielianinov’s hydrothermal coefficient for nine IMGW (Institute of Meteorology and Water Management) stations located in the study area. The second data set consisted of oats yields compiled and published by the Main Statistical Office. Average yields as well as minimum and maximum yields were analysed. The relationship between oats yields and hydrothermal conditions was examined using a step-wise linear regression model. Correlation coefficients were negative in April and positive in June at all the stations. The relationships were confirmed by an analysis of regression equations. The regression equations also included coefficients for May and June which, however, were not statistically significant. Yield variation, described by regression equations of the dependence of oats yield on Sielianinov’s hydrothermal coefficient value was accounted for from 19 (Siedlce, Biała Podlaska) to 50% (Ostrołeka).

Cleats (fractures, joints) are discontinuities in coals, including lignites. They are important in mining activity because of their gas and water permeability in hard coal, and mainly because of their water permeability in lignites. As opposed to hard-coal cleats, lignite cleats have not been studied in detail before. The present contribution does so, using as an example the 1st Middle-Polish Lignite Seam (MPLS-1) in the Jóźwin IIB opencast mine in central Poland. It should be mentioned here that any remarks in the present contribution concerning MPLS-1 refer exclusively to this lignite seam in the Jóźwin IIB opencast mine. The investigated discontinuities consist of two sets, i.e. the face and butt cleats, which are roughly oriented NW–SE and NE–SW, respectively. The mean spacing of the face cleats is ~12.4 cm, while the mean spacing of the butt cleats is ~12.8 cm. The maximum average aperture is ~4.9 mm for the face cleats and ~4.1 mm for the butt cleats. The cleat spacing and aperture do not depend on the lignite thickness, but the cleat spacing increases with increasing mineral-matter and xylite content, whereas the aperture increases when the contents decrease. The regional folding and local salt diapirism tentatively explain the formation of the orthogonal system of the lignite cleats, partly because of the parallelism of the face cleats and the major tectonic directions in central Poland.

In the central part of the Rawka lobe of the Warta stage ice sheet of the Middle Polish glaciation (Saalian), areal déglaciation took place in the vicinity of Łódź. This is indicated by the numerous kames here, among which ridge forms are conspicuous. Some of the ridges which are situated on the slopes of river valleys and on the slopes terrain depression possess unusual shapes which resemble „tongues" and „paws". These forms merge gently with the adjacent elevated upland, whereas their distal parts are sharply defined and may lie as much as several decametres above their bases. „Kame tongues" and „karne paws" are built from paraglaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial deposits which accumulated in water bodies between dead ice blocks during the final phases of the ice sheet downwasting. The distinctive shapes of the landforms result from the varying thickness of the dead ice masses: thinner on the elevations and significantly thicker in terrain depressions (mainly in large, subglacial pre-Wartian valleys). These characteristic kame ridges demonstrate that the more elevated parts of the subglacial surface had been ice free for a long time before the dead ice blocks eventually disappeared from the terrain depressions.

The paper presents palynological data from Bieganin, a village located near Kalisz, Central Poland, where organic sediments were deposited in a subglacial trough dating from the Wartanian Glaciation. The succession of vegetation is characteristic of the Eemian Interglacial. The pollen diagram indicates six local pollen assemblages: B1-Pinus-Betula, B2-Betula-Pinus-Ulmus, B3-Quercus-Corylus, B4 -Corylus, B5-Carpinus-Tilia-Polypodiaceae, B6-Pinus-Picea which correlate well with regional pollen assemblages obtained by Mamakowa (1989b) and Tobolski (1991). The plant succession in Bieganin started in the beginning of the Eemian (zone E1) and ended with the development of coniferous forest (zone E6). The profile does not include the final zone, E7, of the interglacial.

Results of stable isotope, Cladocera and pollen analyses of lacustrine sediments from Besiekierz (Central Poland) are presented. The Besiekierz palaeolake is located about 25 km north of Łódź (Central Poland) at 130 m a.s.l. The 4 m thick deposits comprise silty sands and clayey silts, overlain by calcareous gyttja and organic silts and peat. Pollen analysis documents that these deposits accumulated during the Eemian Interglacial and the Early Vistulian. Based on the results of stable isotope analyses, nine isotopic horizons (Is) were defined and characterized, and these enabled reconstruction of both climatic and hydrological changes. A positive trend in δ18O values and constant values of δ 13 suggest gradual climatic warming, while constant values of δ 18O and δ 13C indicate stable conditions and/or a fast rate of sedimentation. The fluctuation of isotopic values in the upper part of the succession probably points to a shallowing of the lake due to sedimentary infill. The subfossil cladoceran fauna in the Besiekierz succession is represented by 11 solely littoral species belonging to 3 families. Four zones of Cladocera development were distinguished. The Besiekierz palaeolake was a shallow reservoir. The initial period of its existence probably saw its greatest depth. The Cladocera species present indicate the initial oligotrophic status of the lake and its subsequent increase in trophic status. We compare the results of the isotopic, cladoceran and published palynological analyses, to distinguish and explain the phases of evolution of the lake.

Spring-fed fens in Wardzyń represent the rare group of alkaline mires supplied by artesian groundwater. Using multidisciplinary methods (including sedimentological, hydrometric and hydrochemical, pollen, macrofossil, malacological, geochemical, radiocarbon dating, and stable oxygen and carbon isotope analyses) we have been able to (1) reconstruct the main phases of spring-fed fen development, and to (2) determine the cause of Neoholocene groundwater ascension responsible for the mire inception. These phases are characterized by cyclic organic (peat) and carbonate (tufa) sedimentation associated with the Holocene fluctuations in humidity and temperature. The beginning of the activation of hydrological systems (involving the flow of confined groundwater of the Cretaceous aquifer) at Wardzyń occurred in the Subboreal period of the Holocene, after a long episode of decreased humidity initiated ca. 4.2 ka cal BP.

The Bełchatów lignite deposits are a rich archive allowing palaeoenvironmental, palaeoecological and palaeoclimatic reconstructions from the Neogene and Quaternary periods. We describe the results of palynological studies (including non-pollen palynomorphs) of eight samples from the lower Miocene KRAM-P 211/214 collection of plant macroremains. The results of this palynological analysis are consistent with the results of previous studies of plant macroremains and significantly enrich our knowledge of vegetation and palaeoenvironment. Both studies indicate the presence of a freshwater body (a moderately large and deep lake) surrounded by wetland vegetation (including swamp forests with Glyptostrobus, Taxodium, Nyssa and Osmunda) and upland mesophytic forests. Evergreen or at least semi-evergreen forest communities grew along the ancient shores of the lake and on the slopes of the Mesozoic calcareus rocks surrounding the lake. In the lake, green algae (Pediastrum, Tetraedron and some Botryococcus) and freshwater peridinoid dinoflagellates were major components of the algal community. The same lake was the source of previously identified animal remains: freshwater fishes, molluscs, and mammals, including Megachiroptera bats. Our analysis shows that the climate was subtropical and humid, with an estimated mean annual temperature of 16.8–17.8°C.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of soil transmitted zoonotic helminth infections for families with young children, inhabitants of villages in the Mazowieckie Province of Central Poland. Epidemiological survey was conducted at 33 randomly selected households with 2–3 children present. Examination of soil samples from yards surrounding the houses for the presence of geohelminth eggs was conducted, the households were inspected, and family members interviewed using a designed questionnaire. Among 55 localities examined, i.e. 33 backyards, 10 vegetable gardens and 12 sandpits, contamination was found in 2 backyards (6.1%) and 1 sandpit (8.3%) at 3 households (9.1%). Of the total 550 examined soil samples, 4 (0.7%) were found to contain Trichuris and Toxocara eggs, with an average density of 1.5 and 2.0 eggs per sample. The study showed a low level of soil contamination, which was the result of inhabitants care about the sanitation of their domiciles. However, the results of the questionnaire survey demonstrated the need to warn rural residents about the risk factors for zoonotic helmints infections. In particular, parents should be advised how to minimize the threat of parasitic diseases for children in the rural environment. The presented study showed that promotional campaigns implemented in recent years on the prevention of parasitic zoonoses have had little effect to increase the awareness of the rural community. The present results confirmed that Toxocara is the most common zoonotic agent among geohelminths in the rural environment.

The paper analyses the production and allocation of biomass in young, spontaneoussilver birch afforestation occurring on post-agricultural lands in the Mazowszeregion (central Poland). We investigated 114 sample plots of age varying from 1 to 19 years. During the first 15 years after their establishment on abandoned farmland, the naturally regenerated silver birch stands produced on average approximately 75 tons of dry biomass per hectare. The major (50–70%) part of this biomass was stored in the tree stems and this share increased with age. The fractions of biomass in the foliage and roots decreased over time, while the share of biomass in the branches remained rather constant. The significant age-dependency of the allometric relationships suggested the need to use age-sensitive biomass expansion factors to estimate the biomass from the stem volume.

The buried and present-day Vistula valleys has developed along tectonic linear structures of NW-SE trend. During the Małopolanian, Mazovian, Ferdynandovian interglacials the gradient of the buried Vistula valley was 0.57?, while during the Eemian Interglacial and during deposition of Vistulian terraces and Holocene flood plain deposits it was about 0.34?, due to from tectonic movements. The width of the buried Vistula valley was the greatest during the Eemian Interglacial (15 km) and during the Vistulian (17 km) when strong lateral erosion occurred. The stratigraphy of the Quaternary deposits is based on palynologically documented sites of the Ferdynandovian, Mazovian and Eemian interglacials. This region was covered by ice sheets of the Nidanian, Sanian, Wilgian, Liviecian, Odranian and Wartanian glaciations during eight advances. Liviecian and Wartanian Glaciation maximum limits were determined in the study area. Interstadial fluvial deposits, between the premaximum and maximum stadials of the Odranian Glaciation, were recognised and termed sediments of the Gniewosznian Interstadial. The deposits of the Wartanian Glaciation have been TL dated at 146-203 ka BP and the Odranian at 212-280 ka BP.

Diamicton in Biesiekierz (central Poland), whose age and origin has long provoked debate, is located above unquestionable Eemian biogenic deposits documented by palynological and Cladocera analyses. Petrographically, this diamicton shows some similarities to Warthanian till. Lithologically, it shows considerable weathering of the deposit, a possible selection of the component minerals and addition of dispersed biogenic matter. The results obtained so far as well as the palaeomorphological situation indicate that the diamicton is reworked till material, as are sand intercalations within it. Given the organic content of this diamicton, we infer that a long-term agricultural exploitation of its immediate surroundings was the main factor behind colluvial reworking and displacement occurring above the Eemian biogenic deposits in the fossil depression.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the water needs of grapevines in central Poland in 1981-2010. Water needs were calculated by the plant coefficients, which were assumed according to the Doorenbos and Pruitt method. Reference evapotranspiration was assessed by the Blaney-Criddle’s equation, modified for Polish conditions. Rainfall deficit with the occurrence probability of normal, medium dry and very dry years was determined by the Ostromęcki’s method. Water needs of grapevines during the growing season was 434 mm. Upward time trend in the water needs both in the periods May-October and June-August was estimated. Temporal variability in the water needs was significant for most of the provinces. The rainfall deficit was recorded with the occurrence probability of normal as well as medium or very dry years in the entire study area. Due to climate changes, vineyards will require irrigation in the near future. This research significantly broadens and refines the knowledge about the water needs of grapevines in central Poland, which will allow the design of resource-efficient irrigation programs for grapevines in the studied region of Poland.

This paper presents the evolution of the mesoscale convection system as seen on satellite images during all stages: pre-convection, initiation, and maturity. The evolution of any atmospheric phenomenon can be monitored effectively only when the data available have adequate temporal and spatial resolution. In case of convective storms the resolution should be minutes and kilometers. Therefore, data from the METEOSAT geostationary satellite, with 5-minute and 15-minute intervals were used operationally to monitor the storm of 11 August 2017; this was a most destructive storms, concentrated in several districts of the Pomeranian, Greater Poland, and Kuyavian-Pomeranian voivodeships. Analysis demonstrated that some alarming features, like cold rings or cold U/V shapes, can be visible on the single channel satellite images, without even referring to specific convective products. However, the nowcasting of the convective phenomena requires careful analysis of several dedicated products, including stability indices and water vapor content in the troposphere. It has been shown that with comprehensive analysis of the information provided by the different satellite images and satellite derived products, it is possible to draw conclusions about the severity of the observed storms as well as the probability of the occurrence of the extreme weather at the ground.

Opis:
This sedimentological study of the Wielkopolska Member of the Miocene Poznań Formation in the Jóźwin IIB opencast lignite-mining field, central Poland, reveals a late mid-Miocene anastomosing fluvial system with ribbon-shaped channels filled mainly by sandy and muddy deposits. The fluvial system, extending across the eastern flank of the post-Mesozoic Kleczew Graben, was tributive in its eastern upper reaches, but was increasingly distributive and northwards deflected in its lower reaches near the graben axis. Lithofacies analysis of a representative palaeochannel indicates that the river discharge significantly fluctuated and that the channels were filled with mud-bearing stratified fine-grained sand by low-density tractional turbulent flow during the high and low water stages and with a massive mud or sandy mud by a high-density flow during the rising and falling stages. The spatial pattern of fluvial channels and deformation channel-fill sandbodies were controlled by the graben topography and the differential compaction of peat substrate, with possible influence of bedrock faults. The fluvial system is thought to have drained to an endorheic ‘terminal’ basin to the north, rather than into the hypothetical Baltic River and further westwards to the distant North Sea basin, as postulated by some previous authors. The present case study contributes to the known spectrum of anastomosing river systems as a sand- to mud-dominated end-member.

Opis:
Crevasse-splay microdelta deposits and their soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) are described from a tectonically active lignite-bearing area. These strongly deformed siliciclastic deposits, situated between two lignite benches, are typical of a crevasse-splay microdelta. They accumulated in the overbank zone of a Middle Miocene river system (backswamp area) where shallow ponds or lakes occasionally existed. The deformation takes the form of deformed lamination and load (load casts and flame structures) structures as well as seismic breccias within the first Mid-Polish lignite seam. Ductile deformation structures were generated first by liquefaction and then the breccia was formed under brittle conditions. The brecciation followed a sudden tectonic collapse resulting in an increase in pore pressure related to upward water movement. The occurrence in a tectonic graben and characteristic morphological features suggest an origin of these deformational structures with seismic shocks; thus, they can be called seismites. Hence, we provide strong evidence for accumulation of crevasse-splay sediments in the standing water of a backswamp area, and for tectonic activity in central Poland as the Middle Miocene lignite accumulated.

An economical and easy-to-implement technique is outlined by which the mean nocturnal atmospheric mixing state (“stability”) can be assessed over a broad (city-scale) heterogeneous region solely based on near- -surface (2 m above ground level [a.g.l.]) observations of the passive tracer radon-222. The results presented here are mainly based on summer data of hourly meteorological and radon observations near Łodź, Central Poland, from 4 years (2008–2011). Behaviour of the near-surface wind speed and vertical temperature gradient (the primary controls of the nocturnal atmospheric mixing state), as well as the urban heat island intensity, are investigated within each of the four radon-based nocturnal stability categories derived for this study (least stable, weakly stable, moderately stable, and stable). On average, the most (least) stable nights were characterized by vertical temperature gradient of 1.1 (0.5)⁰C·m-1, wind speed of ~0.4 (~1.0) m·s-1, and urban heat island intensity of 4.5 (0.5)⁰C. For sites more than 20 km inland from the coast, where soils are not completely saturated or frozen, radon-based nocturnal stability classification can significantly enhance and simplify a range of environmental research applications (e.g. urban climate studies, urban pollution studies, regulatory dispersion modelling, and evaluating the performance of regional climate and pollution models).

The aim of this article is to provide a holistic presentation of the genesis, intensity, and directions of movement, as well as the spatial and temporal distribution of the German national group which settled in Central Poland from the end of the 18th century to the 1820–1830 period. This paper analyses the determinants of the inflow of German immigrants, and their geographical origin, as well as the social and occupational structure. The settlers from German lands were a very diverse social group. In the case of first and second-generation immigrants who came to Central Poland, the social integration process was still quite slow. The colonists and settlers living in the diaspora developed a certain pattern of existence that focused on their immediate environment separating them from the outside world, while the retention of their mother tongue and religious tradition was more an expression of traditionalist consciousness than national identity.

Remotely obtained geodetic survey data can be used to detect anomalies in the terrain surface over different geological structures, like faults or deposit boundaries. Some computer techniques are helpful to extract the influence of geological phenomena on typical distribution of the measured elevations. Certain disturbances in profile lines can be considered as additional, human-induced effects or caused by geological processes. The paper demonstrates such an analysis basing on geodetic data with some support of geophysical results. The examined morphological profiles and profiles of subsidence bowls caused by mining in the area of Inowroclaw (central Poland) illustrate the problem of an underestimated mechanism in non-geological disciplines. For geologists this is another example of environmental interaction between relief-forming processes and subsurface conditions. Furthermore, it brings additional information about processes of mining subsidence, which is the primary topic of this study. Mutual relationships between vertical displacements induced by mining or other factors and morphological profiles point to the dominant role played by mobility of geological structures, as shown by correlation between geodetic and geophysical data.

An attempt has been made to identify the chemical processes that control the hydrochemistry of groundwater in the catena of Retisols/Luvisols and Gleysols/Phaeozems within the Opalenica Plain, central Poland. Groundwater samples were collected from 6 representative piezometers. The quantity of dissolved components in groundwater was connected with the location of piezometers in the relief studied and the properties of the soil’s parent materials. The groundwater of soil located higher in the soil catena was characterised by smaller concentrations of the components when compared with the composition of water from the lowest sites on the slope. The dominant hydrochemical facies are Ca,Mg–HCO3,SO4, Ca,Mg-mixed or Ca,Mg–HCO3 types in the groundwater from the higher part of the slope and Mg–HCO3,SO4 and Mg–HCO3 types in the water from the lower part of the catena. The chemistry of groundwater is the product of the weathering of carbonate minerals and silicate. The Ca2+/alkalinity molar ratio in the groundwater samples from piezometers located higher in the soil catena indicate that the weathering of both calcite and dolomite can occur there, while only dolomite weathering takes place in the groundwater of the catena pediment. The Ca2+/Mg2+ molar ratio in the water samples from the footslope shows an excess of magnesium over calcium, which could be a result of water interacting with Mg-rich silicate minerals, as an additional process to dissolution of dolomite. Furthermore, data for a few water samples from the footslope cover the evaporation zone of the Gibbs plot. This suggests that while contamination could affect the amount of dissolved components, evaporation can modify the groundwater chemistry of footslope. Cluster analysis grouped groundwater samples into two groups with similar characteristics, indicating the influence of the location of a piezometer in the soil catena on the groundwater chemistry.

Our high-resolution data of pollen and macrofossils from 2 cores taken from the Jagodne site (Garwolin Plain) reveals a pollen succession covering the final part of the Late Saalian (Marine Isotope Stage MIS 6) and embracing the Eemian (MIS 5e). The results correspond to Regional Pollen Assemblage Zones (RPAZ). The hornbeam phase (E5 RPAZ) has been subdivided into subzones and compared to the corresponding division of the key profile of the Garwolin Plain, Kozłów K2-19. The comparison revealed a considerable sedimentary hiatus in the E5 RPAZ at Jagodne. This is attributed to significant palaeohydrological changes occurring widely in this zone, and also seen at other Eemian sites in Poland. Another specific feature of the Jagodne site is the early, rapid terrestrialisation of the palaeolake and its transformation into a raised bog, which occurred already at the end of the hornbeam phase. The Sphagnum dominated peatbog developed for a long time as evidenced by a thick peat layer covering also the Early Vistulian. Both pollen and plant macrofossil data correspond well to observed lithological boundaries, providing a consistent record of palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimate changes. The results obtained contribute to knowledge of palaeoenvironmental changes and palaeoclimate interpretation of that area.

Opis:
The Miocene succession of crevasse-splay microdelta deposits in the Jóźwin IIB lignite opencast mine contains some aspects that are more interesting than Chomiak et al. (2019) seem to realize in their analysis of the sediments and the soft-sediment deformation structures that they contain. Moreover, the authors use a terminology that is not completely adequate, leaving some questions about the precise seismic process that induced the deformation structures. Both aspects are detailed in this comment. The interpretation of the deformation structures presented here may change the insight into the tectonic history of the graben, in which the study area is located.

Opis:

Opis:
During many years’ research, the stratigraphy of Quaternary deposits in the area surrounding Konin has elaborated. In the young Quaternary strata the Eemian fossil lakeland was established and the exposed Mikorzyn section was found. Previous geological and palynological analyses of the site prove a nearly complete sequence of Eemian and Vistulian deposits. Furthermore, archival records of drill cores indicate that older interglacial sediments may also have been deposited about 10 metres deeper in this particular area. To test this possibility, a relatively deep test borehole—Mikorzyn 1 was carried out in the distance about 70 metres only. The sedimentological and palynological core analyses prove the Eemian age of examined organic materials. The borehole, established only the presence of ca.10 m offset in the bottom part of the Eemian strata. This fact, as well as other faults and Tertiary coal injections into glacial sediments, confirmed the occurrence of neotectonic activity.

Opis:
Rogóźno salt dome is one of the most recognizable diapirs in the Polish Lowland. Despite its shallow occurrence depth, increased salinity has not been detected in surface water. The presented hydrogeochemical research aimed at determining if there is the presence of increased geogenical salinity in the groundwater and shallow water. Increased geogenical salinity has not been detected in the Moszczenica River and the Czerniawka River, but were displayed in the Moszczenica River valley in the specific electrical conductivity (SEC) spatial distribution. Hydrogeochemical research indicated the presence of a higher mineralized water ascent in the north-eastern part of the dome. The presence of mixing of saline waters around the dome with fresh waters was determined. Ionic composition and hydrochemical indexes of waters sampled from different levels indicate that the saline structure is not completely isolated from surrounding waters. The dome structure is in contact with water from Upper Jurassic formation which influences the final water composition. Active anthropogenic processes partly mask the influences of geogenic salinity in the study area.

Opis:
Freshwater snails Melanoides tuberculata are among the most commonly kept aquarium molluscs. Their ability to rapidly grow population and a relatively low cost contribute to uncontrolled introductions in new areas by irresponsible owners. The species has been recorded so far in several countries of Western Europe, as well as in Poland, where it was able to settle a stable population in the thermally polluted system of Koninskie Lakes. The paper describes a new statement of this species in the Żerań Canal in Warsaw, Central Poland, where environmental molluscs of the Corbicula genus have also been noted. Four adult snails with black color of spirally twisted shells have been caught. No epibionts were observed on the snails, which could get into the environment with the molluscs. Due to large fluctuations in the temperature of the water in the Canal and its direct connection with the Vistula, it is recommended to cover the site with regular monitoring to determine the potential threat posed by the presence of the Melanoides tuberculata species.

An investigated area is located in the middle reach of the WartaRiver valley. During drillings in the Bór site organic deposits such as detritous calcareous gyttja and calcareous detritous gyttja has been documented in a depth between 14,9 and 16,6 m. The organic deposits are covered by mineral, mostly sandy deposits. The accumulation took place in the small lake formed as an abandoned channel. Palynological analysis led to conclusion that biogenic accumulation began at the end of Wartanian and took place at least to the Eemian Interglacial optimum. Results of palynological, Cladocera and geochemical analysis inform about water level changes and increasing of trophy status of the reservoir. Presence of Mesozoic substratum very close to the palaeolake bottom influenced significantly chemical features of the organic deposits. As Eemian organic deposits are uncommon in the Warta River valley, the Bór site seems important for palaeogeographical reconstructions of the Warta River valley during Eemian Interglacial.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of industrial waste landfill on the release of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on the environment with reference to water flow directions. 10 study plots were designated around the landfill site. Soil samples were taken from different soil layers. Plants: Solidago canadensis (leaves, stem), Quercus L. (leaves), and Poaceae were tested on PCBs contents. Groundwater samples were taken from piezometers. PCBs in the samples were determined by gas chromatography with an electron capture detector (GC/ECD). The highest accumulation of PCBs congeners was observed in the topsoil layers and decreased with the sampling depth. The dominant PCBs congeners in soil were PCB 28 and PCB 138, in plants PCB 28 and PCB 52. The most significant PCBs accumulation in the topsoil layer occurred in the research area on which the largest amount of waste was deposited and was equal to 14.2 ng/g. The largest sum of determined PCBs congeners was found in Solidago canadensis leaves – 3.26 ng/g and Quercus L. leaves – 3.32 ng/g. PCB 28 and PCB 52 were capable of translocation from soil to plants. It was found that the water flow direction did not affect PCB content in soils.

Opis:
The Upper Cretaceous sequence in the area located between Uniejów, Kłodawa and Ozorków, Central Poland, is dominated by carbonate and carbonate-siliceous deposits. They are represented by limestones, marly limestones, marls and opokas with local gaize intercalations in the uppermost part of the sequence. There is also a complex of Santonian-Campanian clastics immediately adjoining the present-day Mid-Polish Swell near the Kłodawa Salt Diapir. The clastics may represent gravity flow deposits associated with a strong uplift of the Izbica -Kłodawa-Łęczyca Zone due to salt movements during inversion of this structure related to the incipient phase of the Late Cretaceous inversion of the whole Mid-Polish Swell. These processes caused increasing morphological gradients when passing south-westwards to the neighbouring subsiding trough. Detailed sedimentological studies of the clastic series cannot be made due to insufficient material and poor core condition. Investigations of the regional facies distribution and sedimentation, performed both along the areas adjoining the present-day Mid-Polish Swell and in local inversion structures, may help in the elucidation of timing of the incipient tectonic inversion phase of the Mid-Polish Trough which was ultimately transformed into the Mid-Polish Swell during the Early Tertiary.

The magnetic polarities of the upper Upper Campanian–Lower Maastrichtian interval of the Middle Vistula River composite section (central Poland), were studied. Sixty-six hand-oriented samples for palaeomagnetic studies were taken from the sections of Raj, Raj North, Podole, Kłudzie and Dziurków. The inter-correlation between them is based primarily on bio-events. The sampled rocks generally revealed a very weak magnetic signal, however quite reliable results were obtained. The whole interval studied, well constrained biostratigraphically, is referred to magnetostratigraphic chron C32n. The Campanian–Maastrichtian boundary, placed biostratigraphically in the upper part of the ‘Inoceramus’ redbirdensis inoceramid Zone, is located near the top of the C32n2n Subchron. Thin reversed polarity intervals in the rocks correlated with the C32n2n chron most probably result from their partial remagnetization (maghemitization).

The article refers to a broader context of scientific debates on the effect of climate warming on shifts in species ranges and describes the recent changes in the distribution and life strategy of Hedera helix close to its eastern limit, in light of climate changes. European ivy is an ecotone species, occurring in fringe communities, in deciduous and mixed deciduous forests in fresh and moist habitats that are occupied by oak-hornbeam and riparian alder-ash forests in Central Poland. Since the mid-20th century, the ivy, a species rarely reproducing generatively, has become an expansive plant with a growing number of sites where flowering and fruiting individuals are encountered. We studied the distribution, habitat requirements and flowering of H. helix in Central Poland in the years 2015–2017 and compared to the situation in the mid-1970s. Climate changes in terms of average air temperatures and precipitation amounts for the past four decades were also assessed. Within the study area, 474 stands of naturally growing Hedera have recently been identified. Ivy was found to reproduce generatively on 121 of those locations. There has been an almost 10-fold increase in the number of fruiting ivy specimens since the mid-1970s of the 20th century. Changes in the species life strategy can be ascribed to the increase in both average air temperatures and solar radiation intensity observed for the past decades. Both enhanced fragmentation of woodland tracts and development of forest ecotones and forest canopy openings promote the expansion of H. helix, while its habitat preferences remain unchanged.

The Vistulian decline was a period of rapid environmental events. The authors correlated ages of the last Scandinavian Ice Sheet limits in northern Poland with ages of prominent events adapting the conditions of periglacial environment of Central Poland in response to the Late Vistulian climate warming. Ages from previous thematic geological and palaeogeographical studies were collected. The approach used indicates that despite methodological uncertainties and sometimes inconsistency of ages, it is especially helpful in timing of first warming signals (ca. 19–18 cal ka BP) and establishing of environmentally bipartite 3 millennia of the Oldest Dryas in the extraglacial zone. Abrupt warming at the onset of the Bølling-Allerød is well registered in biotic and abiotic archives available from Central Poland and remains in agreement with the large recession of the southern ice sheet margin.

We expected that our paper on the crevasse-splay microdelta (Chomiak et al., 2019) would arouse the interest of other researchers for at least two reasons. First, this is the first such palaeoform discovered and described within the Mid-Miocene lignite seam in Poland. Second, the microdelta siliciclastic deposits are strongly deformed both ductile and brittle. Therefore, we would like to thank Tom van Loon for his effort to comment on our article, including his words of appreciation, and above all, for pointing out some of the terminological and interpretative shortcomings. Our reply will be in line with the issues discussed in his comment.
