Opis:
In the year 1869 the restoration of King Casimirus the Great’s sepulchral monument has been carried out. Its main purpose consisted in supplementing of some missing elements that once formed the parts of the canopy crown piece and those of columns as well. From the accompanying drawings may easily be seen the elements that have been replaced in the course of the said restoration. The idea to restore this object dating as far back as to the 14-th century was taken by the Cracow Scientific Society. In the course of restoration works a striking discovery was made, namely within the tomb chest the rests of coffin were found containing the ashes of the King’s corpse together with a full set of royal regalia.

W 1997 r. upłynęło 100 lat od rozpoczęcia (wypłynięcie z Antwerpii 16 sierpnia 1897 r.), a w 1999 r. od zakończenia (powrót do Antwerpii 18 listopada 1899 r.) belgijskiej wyprawy antarktycznej na statku. Belgika", w której wybitny udział naukowy wzięli dwaj młodzi wówczas Polacy Henryk Bronisław Arctowski i Antoni Bolesław Dobrowolski. W historii wypraw i badań antarktycznych była to pierwsza wyprawa zimująca i realizująca bardzo obszerny zakres badań geofizycznych i biologicznych. Zebrano olbrzymie zasoby materiałów naukowych, które zostały opublikowane w specjalnych raportach i w licznych artykułach naukowych. Uczestnicy Wyprawy opublikowali także swoje osobiste dzienniki, w których przedstawili jej przebieg, opisując szereg dramatycznych sytuacji i zdarzeń (A. de Gerlache 1901, tłum. polskie Z. Nałkowskiej 1903; A. B. Dobrowolski 1962). Stanowią one źródło cennych informacji o Wyprawie, ale także zawierają pewną dawkę subiektywizmu. Z czasem powstała obszerna literatura naukowa i popularnonaukowa omawiająca przebieg, zakres badań i wyniki tej Wyprawy. Niniejszy artykuł napisano na podstawie wybranych publikacji cytowanych w tekście i wykazanych na końcu artykułu. Dodamy, że w relacji o przebiegu Wyprawy korzystaliśmy głównie z książki S. Hartmana Belgika (1957) i z Dziennika wyprawy na Antarktydę (1897-1899) A. B. Dobrowolskie go (1962), natomiast w relacji o badaniach naukowych z artykułów A. Kosiby (1960), S. Pietkiewicza (1960) i W. Zinkiewicza (1960). Stulecie Wyprawy obchodzono w latach 1997-1999. Okolicznościowe uroczystości odbywały się w Rumunii, USA i Argentynie, a specjalnie uroczyście obchodzono w Belgii i w Polsce. W Belgii odbyły się pod patronatem Króla Alberta II, a głównym punktem uroczystości było międzynarodowe sympozjum w Brukseli w dniach 14-16 maja 1998 r., na którym wygłoszono ponad 30 referatów. Jednym z referentów był profesor Jacek Machowski, który przedstawił udział Henryka Arctowskiego w Wyprawie. Uroczystości miały znakomitą oprawę. Przygotowano specjalne wystawy, wydrukowano na tę okazję różne materiały popularnonaukowe, telewizja wyświetlała stosowne filmy, a poczta wydała okolicznościowe znaczki. W uroczystościach w Belgii uczestniczyła delegacja z Polski, która do Antwerpii udała się na ORP .Arctowski". W Polsce centralna uroczystość, zorganizowana przez Polską Akademię Nauk i Komitet Badań Polarnych PAN, odbyła się w 1998 r. w Warszawie na Zamku Królewskim. 100-lecie Wyprawy "Belgiki" uczcił także Klub Polarny Polskiego Towarzystwa Geograficznego, który wspólnie z Komitetem Badań Polarnych i Instytutem Geofizyki PAN zorganizował w Warszawie w dniach 16-17 września 1998 r. specjalną, uroczystą sesję w ramach XXV Międzynarodowego Sympozjum Polarnego. Rocznicy tej został poświęcony nr 1-2/1998 "Polish Polar Research" i nr 6/1998 "Biuletynu Polarnego". Prócz tego w niektórych środowiskach akademickich zorganizowano zebrania naukowe i odczyty. W Toruniu 15 maja 1998 r. w ramach VIII Seminarium Meteorologii i Klimatologii Polarnej wygłoszono dwa krótkie referaty poświęcone historii "Belgiki" i osiągnięciom naukowym uczestników Wyprawy. Na ich kanwie powstał niniejszy artykuł.
One hundred years have elapsed in 1997 since the beginning (departure from Antwerp on 16 August 1897) and in 1999 since the end (return to Antwerp on 18 November 1899) the Belgian Antarctic Expedition on the ship "Belgica". Two at that time young Polish scientists, Henryk Bronisław Arctowski and Antoni Bolesław Dobrowolski, took a remarkable part in this expedition. In the history of Antarctic expeditions and scientific research programs this was the first expedition spending there the whole winter realising a very wide rang e of geophysical and biological studies. They have collected a huge amount of scientific materials what have been published in special reports and in numerous research papers. The participants of the expedition have also published their personal diaries where they presented the run of the expeditions describing many dramatic situations and events. They are the sources of valuable information about the expedition, but they are also subjective on a certain degree. With time comprehensive scientific and popular scientific literature arose discussing the run, study areas and results of this expedition. This paper has been written on the basis of cited publications in the text and at the end of the paper. The centenary of the Expedition was celebrated in the years 1997-1999. Ceremonies connected with the centenary were held in Belgium, Poland, USA, Argentina; they were especially ceremonial in Belgium and in Poland, A Polish delegation took part in the ceremonies in Belgium reaching Antwerp by the ship "Arctowski", In Poland the main ceremony organised by the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and the Committee of Polar Studies of PAN was held in 1998 in Warsaw in the King's Castle. The Polar Club of the Polish Geographical Society also celebrated the centenary of the "Belgica" Expedition and together with the Committee of Polar Studies and the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences organised in Warsaw special session on 16-17 September 1998 in the frame of the XXV International Polar Symposium. Moreover, at some universities scicntific meetings and lectures were organised. In Toruń on 15 May 1998 during the 8th Seminary of Polar Meteorology and Climatology two short papers were presented about the history of "Belgica" and its scientific achievements. This paper has been written on their basis.

W pracy przedstawiono rys historyczny pomiarów rejestrujących zmiany położenia klifu Lodowca Hansa od początku XX wieku, (tj. od lat, kiedy jak powszechnie sie uważa, sporządzano dla tych obszarów już kartometryczne mapy) do roku 2007 włącznie. Przedstawiono stosowane na przestrzeni tego okresu metody pozyskiwania danych (mapy morskie, fotogrametria lotnicza i naziemna, teledetekcja), stosowane metody ich opracowania (analogowe i analityczne, punktowe i ciągłe) oraz wyniki ilustrujące zmiany geometrii klifu lodowca (graficzne i analityczne). Przedstawione w różnej postaci wyniki wskazują bezsprzecznie na niemal stała, na przestrzeni XX wieku, regresje klifu. W okresie ostatniego stulecia (do 2007 roku) jej wielkość jest rzędu 2 600 m, co daje średni roczny regres rzędu 24 m. Jak wskazują niektóre obserwacje coroczne, w pewnych okresach czasu miały miejsce krótkotrwałe transgresje (np. w roku 1973 oraz w 1993). Znaczną uwagę poświęcono pracom wykonanym latem 2007 roku opisujących zastosowanie automatycznego monitoringu strefy czołowej badanego lodowca. Zebrany w okresie dwóch miesięcy polarnego lata materiał dostarczył ponad tysiąc stereogramów dokumentujących zjawiska zachodzące w strefie marginalnej lodowca (cielenie, wypływy wód subglacjalnych oraz dynamikę szczelin). Podsumowanie zawiera kilka wniosków dotyczących aspektu dokładnościowego, logistycznego i ekonomicznego. Rozpoczęte przed ćwierćwieczem przez wyprawy glacjologiczne Uniwersytetu Śląskiego regularne rejestracje terrofotogrametryczne, przyczyniły sie znacznie do tego, _e Lodowiec Hansa został wytypowany w planach badawczych IV Międzynarodowego Roku Polarnego jako lodowiec wzorcowy.
The study presents a historical outline of the measurements recording the change of position of Hans Glacier cliff from the beginning of 20th century (i.e. from the period when, as it was commonly believed, metric maps of those areas have been already known) utnil 2007. Therefore, the methods applied in the course of maintaining the databases (marine charts, aerial and terrestrial photogrammetry, remote-sensing), as well as the methods used for their elaboration (analogue and digital, point by point and continuous) and, eventually, the results illustrating the changes of geometry of the cliff glacier (graphic and analytic) are described in the present paper. The results introduced in different ways show, beyond reasonable doubt, that along the 20th century, almost permanent regress of cliff was observed. Until now, its size has been calculated as about 2 600 m, which means that the average annual regress of line amounts to 24 m. That was confirmed by some annual observations, momentary transgressions took place from time to time (e.g. like those in 1973 or 1993). Considerable attention was drawn to the works carried out in the summer 2007, describing the use of automatic monitoring (laps cameras) of the front zone of the glacier in consideration. Gathered during the period of two months of the polar summer, the material resulted in over a thousand of stereopairs documenting the phenomena observed in the marginal zone of the glacier (calvings, outflows of subglacial waters, the dynamics of crevasses). The recapitulation presents the conclusions relating to the aspects of accuracy, logistics and economy. The terrestrial photogrammetric works, initiated a quarter of the 20th century ago by glaciological expeditions of the scientists of the University of Silesia, played a significant role in the course of selecting the Hans Glacier as a standard one in research plans defined by the IV International Polar Year.

This article is inspired by Georg Simmel’s formal sociology and written in his characteristic essay style. The article is about the representation relation viewed as a form of social interaction. Contrary to approaches which are dominant in the literature, the author argues that representation is a trilateral relation: the representative always represents the representee before an audience, even if this audience is not always easy to define. The same, paradoxically, can be said about the representee. In its pure forms, the object of representation may be the very presence of the representee, the representee’s will or his/her interest and mutual expectations among the three parties will vary depending on what is being represented. Many representation relations only become such relations ex post; they are initiated not in the act of authorization but in the act of usurpation which is legalized and institutionalized not only by the representee but also by the audience. For this reason, the difference between representation and usurpation is often fluid and fuzzy. The representation relation, as it is understood in this article, is one of the main forms of social interaction because thanks to this relation people who cannot appear personally in the public sphere for various reasons can nevertheless make an appearance.
