Opis:
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is the most widely used filler material in paper, paint, plastic, food, ceramic, cosmetic, medicine and other industries. In the present paper, precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) has been produced from waste marble powder (WMP) by the Calcination-Dissolution-Precipitation (CDP) method. Calcination, dissolution and precipitation experiments were carried out under various conditions including : calcination temperature (800, 850, 900, 950 and 1000 °C), dissolution time (2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 min) and precipitation time (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5 and 15.0 min). Then, XRF, XRD, SEM, particle size, whiteness, brightness and yellowness analyses were performed for the characterization of the produced PCC materials. The analyses showed that the precipitate was mainly micrometer-sized (d50 = 1.682 μm) rhombohedral calcium carbonate crystals with 54.5% CaO. The whiteness, brightness and yellowness tests of the precipitates, conducted by Datacolor Elrepho 450x spectrometer, were determined to be 91.28, 98.2 and 1.99%, respectively. It was finally concluded that the produced PCC material reasonably meets Turkish Standards (TS 11653/1995) and can be used in paper industry.

Opis:
The mineral phase of the aragonite skeletal fibers of extant scleractinians (Favia, Goniastrea) examined with Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) consists entirely of grains ca. 50–100 nm in diameter separated from each other by spaces of a few nanometers. A similar pattern of nanograin arrangement was observed in basal calcite skeleton of extant calcareous sponges (Petrobiona) and aragonitic extant stylasterid coralla (Adelopora). Aragonite fibers of the fossil scleractinians: Neogene Paracyathus (Korytnica, Poland), Cretaceous Rennensismilia (Gosau, Austria), Trochocyathus (Black Hills, South Dakota, USA), Jurassic Isastraea (Ostromice, Poland), and unidentified Triassic tropiastraeid (Alpe di Specie, Italy) are also nanogranular, though boundaries between individual grains occasionally are not well resolved. On the other hand, in diagenetically altered coralla (fibrous skeleton beside aragonite bears distinct calcite signals) of the Triassic corals from Alakir Cay, Turkey (Pachysolenia), a typical nanogranular pattern is not recognizable. Also aragonite crystals produced synthetically in sterile environment did not exhibit a nanogranular pattern. Unexpectedly, nanograins were recognized in some crystals of sparry calcite regarded as abiotically precipitated. Our findings support the idea that nanogranular organization of calcium carbonate fibers is not, per se, evidence of their biogenic versus abiogenic origin or their aragonitic versus calcitic composition but rather, a feature of CaCO₃ formed in an aqueous solution in the presence of organic molecules that control nanograin formation. Consistent orientation of crystalographic axes of polycrystalline skeletal fibers in extant or fossil coralla, suggests that nanograins are monocrystalline and crystallographically ordered (at least after deposition). A distinctly granular versus an unresolvable pattern of nano−organization of CaCO₃ fibers seems to correspond, respectively, to an original versus a diagenetically depleted amount of organic matter bounding a mineral phase; this is consistent with qualitative and quantitative analyses of organic matter content in extant and fossil skeletons.

Opis:
Calcium carbonate is used as an additive in the production of paper and some other production processes. The aim of this study was to determine the chances of the calcite sample to be mechanically cleaned of impurities, so that the material can become commercially interesting, primarily to be sold to the paper and other-related industries. A mineralogical petrographic investigation carried out on a sample of calcite showed that an unfavorable impurity is, in particular, graphite – which is otherwise fairly easily to remove by flotation. Flotation was performed with samples of different particle size. The purpose of this was to find an optimal particle size for carrying out the flotation. In order to achieve an effective flotation results it is first necessary to achieve a proper liberation of grains. The second part of the study was to explore the optimal sequence of treatment procedures for tested calcite, using milling, flotation, and sedimentation.

The objective of this work is the preparation and the characterization of high density polyethylene /calcium carbonate (HDPE/CaCO3) composites. Polyethylene composites, containing 10-35 wt. % of CaCO3 and HDPE with MFI (Melt Flow index) (0.550 g/10mn) were prepared with co-extrusion process using extruder type Cincinati 90D. Thermal and mechanical studies were made in order to determine the parameters for obtaining a material (corrugated pipe) with optimal properties. The composite viscosity increased with filler content, suggesting the formation of filler agglomerates. Thermal analysis shows that addition of 30 % CaCO3 increased the thermal stability of HDPE around 32°C, decreasing the processing temperature of composites in 15°C. Regarding to the mechanical tests, the ring stiffness of the composites decreased with the addition of CaCO3. According to the obtained results, we suggest that HDPE/CaCO3 composites could be used in the pipe production where tensile strengths higher than 25 MPa are not required and for service temperatures between 30°C and 70°C.

An extracellular substance extracted from the bacterial strain Rhodococcus opacus was used as a template for calcium carbonate precipitation from CaCl2 and Na2CO3 solutions at 25 and 37 °C. Obtained crystals were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Kinetics of precipitation was investigated by conductivity measurements. The obtained results show that the used biopolymer does not affect the crystal structure but acts as a nucleation centers leading to the formation of calcite crystals with the regular size. This effect is concentration dependent i.e. the EPS concentration increase causes the crystal size decreases, and is greater if calcium chloride solution if mixed with EPS 15 min before the addition of sodium carbonate solution. The temperature increase strengthens this effect.

The investigation of surface modification of Egyptian calcium carbonate via polymers was achieved with simultaneous ultra-fine grinding. Attrition mill and planetary mill were used for wet and dry grinding, respectively. The parameters affecting the grinding were studied such as ball number, speed and grinding time. The rheological characteristics of the aqueous calcium carbonate suspensions were studied in the presence of different types of polymers. The results indicated that the mechanical force could clearly affect the modification characteristics of calcium carbonate due to its mechanochemical effects. The viscosity of calcium carbonate suspension depends on the volume percentage or weight percentage. The dispersing agent increases the solid concentration for a given particle fineness.

There is a need to develop advanced multifunctional scaffolds for the treatment of bone tissue lesions, which apart from providing support for infiltrating cells could assure the delivery of drugs or biologically active molecules enhancing bone formation. We developed composite scaffolds for bone tissue engineering based on gellan gum (GG) and gelatin (Gel) hydrogel enriched with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) loaded CaCO3 microparticles and subjected to enzymatic mineralization with calcium phosphate (CaP). The method of manufacturing CaCO3 microparticles was optimized. The EGCG-loaded microparticles were smaller than those unloaded, and the release of EGCG was prolonged for up to 14 days, as shown by the Folin-Ciocalteu test. The particles reduced the viability of the MG-63 cells as compared to the control. However, when they were loaded with EGCG, their cytotoxicity was reduced. The particles were suspended in a GG/Gel hydrogel containing alkaline phosphatase (ALP), soaked in calcium glycerophosphate (CaGP) solution to create CaP deposits, and submitted to freeze-drying, in order to produce a porous scaffold. The microstructure of the scaffolds was characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy and showed that the size of the pores corresponds to that of the spongy bone. In vitro tests with MG-63 cells confirmed that mineralized scaffolds support cell adhesion and growth to a higher extent than nonmineralized ones.

W obszarach tych wytrącany CaCO3 spełnia rolę czynnika remediacyjnego i cementującego, na przykład w celu (1) oczyszczania wód z jonów metali toksycznych i radionuklidów, (2) wzmacniania i konsolidacji gruntu i piasku, (3) uszczelniania formacji geologicznych, (4) naprawy obiektów budowlanych i (5) ochrony powierzchni tych obiektów warstwami ochronnymi. Choć stosowana z powodzeniem w sektorze ochrony i restauracji budowli historycznych, technika ta pozostaje ciągle na etapie badań i procesów optymalizacyjnych.
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a substance widespread in nature and used in numerous practical applications. In nature, its biomineralization relies, among others, on microbiologically induced precipitation processes. One of such processes is precipitation induced by ureolytic bacteria. If performed in a biomimetic manner, the process is carried out under mild conditions and, most importantly, can be employed in field applications in situ. Therefore, the process constitutes an eco-friendly and energy-saving technique to be used as an ecological alternative to conventional techniques in a variety of engineering fields. In these fields, CaCO3 serves as a remediating and cementing agent, for instance to (1) clean waste- and groundwater from toxic metals and radionuclides, (2) strengthen and consolidate soil and sand, (3) seal geological formations to enhance oil recovery and geologic CO2 sequestration, (4) repair stone and concrete structures, and (5) cover surfaces of these structures with protective layers. Although already in use in the sector of protection and renovation of stone monuments, to date the technique has remained mostly under research and optimization. To become fully implementable as a reliable and economically viable technique, it still requires further research in order to address its limitations, focus on parametrical optimization, up-scaling and life-size field experiments. All these, in an interdisciplinary effort of geologists, microbiologists, chemists, civil engineers and conservators of historic monuments, will move this eco-friendly and innovative branch of engineering from laboratory to field applications in the environmental and civil engineering, geotechnology and conservation of historic buildings. Given its eco-potential and innovativeness, in this study the principles of the technique, advantages, possible applications and challenges are reviewed.

In this study, the role of polymer in precipitation has been examined by studying the effect of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the formation of calcium carbonate particles. The CaCO3 particles were characterized by several techniques, such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, and particle size distribution analysis. In the absence of polymer, the mixing of reagents in an aqueous solution led to the formation of calcite crystals. Introduction of poly(ethylene glycol) molecules reduced the rate of crystallization process, and the effect was concentration dependent. In the presence of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 % of PEG, after 5 minutes of precipitation initiation, vaterite microspheres appeared in the system and which were transformed into calcite crystals after 24 hours. The calcium carbonate obtained with PEG was characterized by smaller sized particles in comparison with the ones without polymer.

Suspensions of calcium carbonate are of a major concern in various fields, such as coating, painting and ceramics and their rheological properties are very important. The effect of polyacrylic acid (PAA) of different molecular mass as a surface modifier on the surface and rheological properties of the aqueous suspension of calcium carbonate was investigated. The effect of the volume fraction of particles and polymer concentration on the viscosity at lower shear rate was discussed. The flow behavior of the concentrated suspension in the presence of PAA can be explained by the difference of the repulsive force among particles, induced by the adsorbed polymer. The results showed that the dispersibility is more pronounced by the steric hindrance behavior rather than the electrostatic behavior.

Thyme belongs to herbal plants, the yield and quality of which depend on biological factors, agrotechnical procedures and the way of processing and storage. Basic factor differentiating the biological value of plants is fertilization, including manure, as well as plant growth and development, which is significantly influenced by the pH of the substrate, in which the plants are grown. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of manure dose (12.5 and 25 g·dm–3) and calcium carbonate (5 and 15 g·dm–3) on the yield and biological value of thyme. The fresh thyme mass yield was changed under the influence of the factors used. The highest yield of raw material was recorded after using a high dose of manure and calcium carbonate. Significantly higher concentration of essential oil in thyme was found after feeding the plants with higher dose of manure. The inverse relationship was demonstrated for the amount of L-ascorbic acid that decreased with the increase in manure dose. Calcium fertilizers not only serve to regulate the acidity, but are also a source of calcium for plants. Opis:
Neutralization of acid mine water is the fundamental step in acid mine water treatment, accompanied by the elimination of iron, partial elimination of manganese and dissolved components of heavy metals, before its discharge into the receiving body. Most frequently lime hydrate, in the form of milk of lime, is used in the neutralization process. The negative outcome of lime hydrate application is an increase in the treated water hardness and a formation of sludge difficult to drain, which could partially be solved using calcium carbonate or combining both agents. The paper observes the effects of calcium carbonate in the neutralization of acid mine water in the locality of Jiří Mine in the Sokolov Region. Attention is paid to testing neutralization methods that are both economically favourable as well as technologically effective. Samples were studied for the time variations in pH values, initial and final concentrations of iron and manganese. Last but not least, it includes an economic appraisal considering the current costs of the agents. As for the neutralization agents, the cost savings are as much as 30% when combining the two agents; under the given conditions the sole application of calcium carbonate proved as economically unprofitable.

Opis:
In this study the role of PEG and PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymers molecular weight in precipitation of calcium carbonate was examined. The CaCO3 particles were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray, SEM and particle size distribution analysis. In absence and presence of modifiers, mixing of the reagents led to the formation of calcite crystals. The calcium carbonate obtained with poly(ethylene glycol) and block copolymers was characterized by smaller diameter in comparison with the one without modifiers. It was observed that using compounds with different molecular weights has no obvious effect on the form and properties of precipitated calcium carbonate particles.

Opis:
A new CaCO3-SiO2 composite with core-shell structure was successfully prepared by mechano-chemistry method (MCM). SEM and FTIR indicated that SiO2 particles were homogeneously immobilized on the surface of CaCO3. The well dispersion of this CaCO3-SiO2 composite into silicone rubber can not only reduce the usage amount of SiO2, but also improve the mechanical properties of silicone rubber. By the calculation, the theoretical numbers of the SiO2 particles is about 10 times as large as that of CaCO3 particles in the CaCO3-SiO2 composite. Mixing CaCO3-SiO2 composite in silicone rubber can enhance the breaking strength of the silicone rubber about 18% as high as that when mixing the pure SiO2. And the elongation at break is about 14% less than that of adding the pure SiO2 sample.

Opis:
The adhesive properties of ternary composites based on middle density polyethylene (PE-MD) and isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) with high content (48–64 wt %) of inorganic fillers were studied. As fillers two kinds of calcium carbonate were used. Two fillers differed in their fineness degree and one of them had also stearic acid modified surface. It was stated that the kind and amount of filler affect mean value and scatter of surface free energy (γS) as well as its polar and dispersive components. More stable adhesive properties were observed for composites with stearic acid modified filler.
Zbadano właściwości adhezyjne trójskładnikowego kompozytu na bazie polietylenu średniej gęstości (PE-MD) i izotaktycznego polipropylenu (i-PP) z wysoką zawartością (48–64 % mas.) nieorganicznych napełniaczy.

Opis:
Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation is one of the biomineralization types closely dependent on the parameters of the microenvironment. Minerals are precipitated as a product of environmental and bacterial cell interactions, however, this system has very little control via microorganisms. The aim of research was to determine the influence of abiotic factors (pH, temperature, agitation speed of bacterial culture and calcium ion source) on the mineralization induced by Arthrobacter sulfureus, Bacillus muralis and B. atrophaeus strains under the standard laboratory conditions. Because of the key role of urease in biomineralization, processes occurring in environments with and without the urea were compared. For this purpose, cultivation of bacteria (A. sulfureus, B. muralis and B. atrophaeus) was carried out in B4 liquid medium for 5 days with various environmental parameters (pH 6-9; temperature 25-44°C; speed of agitation 0-180 rpm, different calcium sources). It was noticed that the pH and the speed of agitation clearly affect the amount of the calcium carbonate that formed. Our observations suggest that the highest precipitation rate takes place in alkaline pH between 8-9, with shaking at 180 rpms. Among studied sources of calcium ions (calcium acetate, calcium chloride and calcium nitrate), calcium acetate demonstrated the strongest potential in the biomineralization process. Moreover, work presented here demonstrates that the correlation between cultivation temperature and biomineralization process cannot be clearly evaluated. The morphology and size of calcium carbonate minerals was strain-specific, although affected by the presence of urea in the surrounding solution.
