Opis:
Cytotoxicity of cadmium sulphide, oxide and chloride was tested using A549 and CHO-9 cells. Metabolic activity of cells (MTT test) and cell membrane permeability (NRU test) were used as cytotoxicity endpoints. The results revealed unexpectedly low toxicity of cadmium sulphide as compared to chloride and oxide. This preliminary report does not provide any explanation for this effect, but the result may nevertheless be interesting for future studies of toxicity mechanisms of cadmium compounds. First cadmium compounds caused damage or change in the permeability of cell membranes, then inhibition of metabolic activity of mitochondria. It cannot be ruled out that the cell lysosomes are at first exposed to the effect of cadmium.

Opis:
Cadmium emitted to the natural environment due to anthropogenic pressure can easily move through the trophic chain, thus posing a threat to human and animal health. Soil contamination with cadmium can cause disorders in the growth and development of plants, and therefore may have an adverse effect on the volume and quality of yields. The purpose of this study has been to evaluate the effect of soil contamination with incremental doses of cadmium together with the application of neutralizing substances on the yield of oat (Avena sativa L.) and on the content, uptake and distribution of cadmium in oat plants. The research was based on a pot experiment conducted on cv. Dragon oat, grown on soil with the grain-size composition of loamy sand. Cadmium was introduced to soil in the form of cadmium chloride, in doses equal 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 mg Cd kg-1. In order to alleviate the negative effect of soil contamination with cadmium, neutralizing substances were used, such as compost, lime and brown coal. The statistical analysis of the results demonstrated the presence of a negative correlation between the cadmium doses and the volume of oat yields. The lowest cadmium dose (10 mg Cd kg-1 of soil) significantly decreased the yield of oat straw and roots; regarding the grain yield, it was significantly depressed by the two highest cadmium doses (30 and 40 mg Cd kg-1 of soil). Of the three neutralizing substances applied, compost had a positive effect on the quantity of grain yield, compost and brown coal affected positively the yield of straw, while soil liming significantly decreased the yield of roots. Soil contamination with cadmium significantly affected the content of cadmium, raising it in the separated parts of oat plants, of which roots contained the distinctly highest amounts of the pollutant. The highest cadmium uptake (1.50 mg Cd pot-1) was detected in oat straw, which on average accumulated 58% of this xenobiotic. All the applied substances neutralizing the soil contamination with cadmium significantly decreased the content and the uptake of this element by oat grain, straw and roots, with lime producing the strongest impact.

Mathematically, this force can be estimated and it must be greater than the van-der Walls force acting between adjacent sandwiches of cadmium iodide and can give rise to polytypic phase transformations. Further, studies of vacancies and the density measurements of various polytypes can help in understanding the phenomenon of polytypism better.

Opis:
Cadmium is a toxic and carcinogenic heavy metal that nowadays constitutes a serious environmental health problem. The aim of this study is to review the effects of cadmium on selected inflammatory mediators and markers, such as NF-κB and AP-1 transcription factors, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β cytokines, IL-8 or MIP-2 chemokine, MPO, iNOS, MMPs and COX-2 enzymes, PGE2 (product of COX-2 enzyme), ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and PECAM-1 adhesion molecules, and CRP. The research strategy identified articles available in Medline, published between 1998 and 2012; we included both in vivo and in vitro studies carried out on humans and rodents. Most of the reviewed research findings suggest that cadmium in micromolar concentrations (especially in the 1-10 μM range) causes up-regulation of the mediators and markers of inflammation, and appears to have pro-inflammatory properties. However, it is worth mentioning that a contradictory or even opposite hypothesis exists, which suggests cadmium to be an anti-inflammatory factor. Further research including detailed histological analyses should solve this discrepancy. Nevertheless, it appears that the main reason for these contradictory findings is the experimental setup: different biological systems analyzed and different doses of cadmium applied.

The search for the best solutions to restore soil balance is essential for attaining a stable and sustainable agricultural development worldwide. This research, which makes a contribution to these investigations, focuses on four substances (two innovative ones: basalt flour, brown algal extract, and two classic soil improvers: finely ground barley straw and compost) which can potentially alleviate the inhibitory effect of Cd2+ on the soil environment. The following were analyzed: the activity of acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase, counts of Pseudomonas sp., cellulolytic bacteria, copiotrophic bacteria and copiotrophic spore-forming bacteria, and the yield of spring barley. Cadmium (Cd2+) was applied as CdCl2 · 2.5H2O in the following doses: 0, 4, 40, 80, 120, 160, and 200 mg Cd2+ kg-1 of soil. For a more complete assessment of the soil, its biochemical properties and the counts of microorganisms were scrutinized with the following indices: RS – soil resistance, R:S – rhizosphere effect and EF – fertilization effect of the contamination alleviating substances. It was found that alkaline phosphatase is more sensitive to cadmium contamination of the soil than acid phosphatase. Cadmium did not exert any inhibitory effect on the number of microorganisms present or the yield of spring barley. Cellulolytic bacteria were the least sensitive to stress associated with the accumulation of high cadmium doses in the soil, whereas copiotrophic bacteria were the most sensitive microorganisms to the above stressor. The ability of cadmium-polluted soil to restore homeostasis depended on the type of a soil improver and the level of soil contamination. Negative consequences of cadmium pollution were effectively mitigated by straw, but less so by brown algal extract and basalt flour.

The toxic action of cadmium in the bone tissue is known, but its mechanisms are still unexplained. We examined whether Cd influences collagen content and its solubility in the femoral bone of three-week-old female rats exposed to 5 or 50 mg Cd/l in drinking water. Non-cross linked collagen was extracted with 0.5 M acetic acid, and two acid-insoluble collagen fractions were extracted with pepsin and 4.0 M guanidine hydrochloride, respectively. SDS/PAGE showed the presence of two collagen types, I and V, in all three extracted fractions. Exposure of rats to Cd for 6 months increased the amount of acid-soluble collagens type I and V and decreased the level of acid-insoluble collagens. The amount of total collagen extracted from the bones of rats exposed to 50 mg Cd/l was reduced by about 14% as compared to control and those intoxicated with 5 mg Cd/l. The solubility of type I bone collagen (determined as the percentage of acetic-soluble fraction of total collagen) was increased 2.9- and 3.0-fold in rats intoxicated with 5 and 50 mg Cd/l, respectively. Similarly, the solubility of type V collagen was increased 2.3- and 2.7-fold, respectively. Our results indicate that Cd treatment affects bone collagen by decreasing its content and increasing its solubility.

The presence of toxic heavy metals in industrial wastewater is a serious pollution problem. The ability of chitosan membranes as an adsorbent for cadmium ions in aqueous solution was studied. Experiments were carried out as function of contact time and concentration of cadmium ions. This study has shown that chitosan is capable of removing cadmium from aqueous solution. The removal efficiency depends on reaction time and concentration of cadmium. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to describe the isotherms and isotherm constants. Equilibrium data agreed very well with the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the Langmuir isotherm equation was 94 mg/g and the Langmuir adsorption equilibrium constant was 1.6 × 10-3 dm3/mg at 25 °C.

Opis:
Cadmium (Cd) is toxic for humans, but its effects on the yield and quality of rice under contaminated irrigation conditions remain uncertain. In this study, paddy soils in the Red River Delta (Vietnam) were selected for experiments with the purpose of understanding the effects of Cd contaminated irrigation water on growth, yields, and grain Cd accumulation. In addition, biochar was produced from rice husk (BRH) and rice straw for preventing Cd infiltration into rice was also studied in this experiment. A field experiment was established with applicated BRH and straw into polluted paddy soil, as a result the Cd content in grains reduced significantly. The Cd contaminated soil was added to the BRH and rice straw (RS) with six ratios, including: (1) RS 2.5%, (2) BRH 2.5%, (3) RS-BRH: 1.25–1.25%, (4) RS 5.0%, (5) BRH 5.0%, (6) RS-BRH: 2.5–2.5%, (w:w). Besides, three content levels 0.01–0.05–0.5 mg/L of Cd in irrigation water were applied throughout crop season. The results showed that the Cd accumulation in rice was in the following order: roots > stems > seeds. With 3 contaminated irrigation levels which were applied, the Cd concentrations of 0.05 mg/L and 0.5 mg/L affected plant height and yield. However, the Cd content in grains under contaminated soil condition can be controlled from 82.47–83.94% by applying a BRH ratio from 2.5–5% (w:w).

The aim of this study was estimation of total cadmium content and its fractional composition in arable soils, depending on their physicochemical properties. The research material consisted of samples taken from arable soil in 81 points within then Podlasie Province. The content of total cadmium in soils and its fractional composition was determined with the BCR method. It was found that the total content of cadmium was typical for uncontaminated soils and ranged from 0.11 to 1.59 mg kg⁻¹. The percentage of acid in the soluble and exchangeable fraction fluctuated at around 10% on average. The reducible fraction comprised about 20% and oxidizable fraction 26%, on average. Most of the cadmium was in the residual fraction. The factors that influenced the fractional composition of cadmium were determined. For the very light and light soils it was mainly the content of magnesium and pH, while for medium soils it was the organic carbon and magnesium content, content of soil fraction <0.02 mm, as well as the percentage of Cd in reducible fraction.

The influence of Cd concentration in growing substrate (0, 10, 20, 40 mg·dm⁻³) and AMF colonization of root system on growth, flowering, and Cd accumulation in osteospermum shoots were examined. Cd in the applied concentrations did not affect decorative value of osteospermum, no chlorosis or necrosis were observed on leaf margins frequently visible on leaves of other bedding plants. Cd at higher concentrations (20 and 40 mg·dm⁻³) lowered dry weights of shoots and roots in non-mycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal plants were lower and had lower dry weights of shoots and roots. Cd did not affect dry weights of shoots and roots in mycorrhizal plants. The effects of Cd and mycorrhization on flowering of osteospermum were negligible. Cd content of osteospermum shoots increased with the increasing content of Cd in growing substrate. Mycorrhizal plants grown in substrate containing 40 mg Cd·dm⁻³ accumulated more Cd in shoots than non-mycorrhizal plants. Obtained results showed that osteospermum is very tolerant to Cd toxicity and can accumulate great amount of Cd in shoots.
Cd w wyższych stężeniach (20 i 40 mg·dm⁻³) powodował spadek suchej masy części nadziemnych i korzeni roślin niezmikoryzowanych. Rośliny zmikoryzowane były niższe i miały mniejszą suchą masę niż niezmikoryzowane.

Opis:
Environmental pollution particularly heavy metal pollution into aquatic ecosystem has led to multiple damage in almost all life forms. Cadmium is one of the priority pollutant listed by United States Environmental Protection Agency or US EPA that widely known to have an adverse effect to organisms as well as human health. One type of organism that is susceptible to the effects of metal pollution is phytoplankton. Phytoplankton is a group of microalgae that are easy to find and are primary producers in aquatic environments. Phytoplankton plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems because they serve as primary producers. They are representing the water total primary productivity and reinforcing the aquatic life on the higher food chain. Thus, any threats that endangered the population of phytoplankton can lead to trophical cascade or even worse, biodiversity loss. The exposure of cadmium in high concentration to phytoplankton can lead to various impact including cell damage and disruption, biosynthesis inhibition of photosynthetic pigment (e.g. chlorophyll and carotenoid), chlorphyll degradation or known as chlorosis, thylakoid membrane degradation, inhibition of cellular metabolism and cell division. It is important to study the impact of cadmium to phytoplankton in a cellular level to better understand what mechanism lies and to what extent that the cadmium will be transferred to higher trophical organism via bioaccumulation or biomagnification.

It turned out to be a simple and effective method for the calculation of effective diffusivity of Cd(II) in alginate sorbents. The De values obtained by the two methods depended on the alginate content in the beads. However, SCM, in contrast to the conductometric method, gave De values increasing with increasing alginate levels in the beads and lower than the molecular diffusivity of Cd(II), this being inconsistent with the mechanism of diffusion in porous carriers. Hence, the conductometric method can be considered as one giving more reliable results, compared with the SCM method. Moreover, diffusion retardation coefficients for the alginate beads were calculated. Enhanced content of the biopolymer in the beads caused retardation of Cd(II) diffusion in the beads due to the decreasing calculated retardation coefficients with the increasing alginate contents in the beads.

Opis:
Infants and little children are the highest risk group as far as the exposition to toxic metals is concerned. Newly born babies do not have effectively functioning regulatory mechanisms and the absorption of mineral elements, including toxic ones, is higher than in older children and adults. Separate, more rigorous requirements have been determined for food products for infant nutrition. Special attention is required in the case of toxic metals, including lead and cadmium, which are regarded as particularly harmful to the organism. The objective of the present work was to establish the content of lead and cadmium in powdered milk used in the nutrition of infants in the first months of their lives. Moreover, on the basis of surveys, the popularity of using milk replacement formulas was determined, as well as factors affecting this situation. All the examined preparations were labelled as “a special nutrition product”. They had been purchased in different groceries in Lublin in October 2007, all before their use-by date. The shares of Pb and Cd were marked in the samples. It was demonstrated that only two preparations did not comply with the recommendations regarding the content of cadmium, while in the other samples the maximum value was not exceeded. It was also noted that the analysed preparations were not safe for babies as far as the content of lead was concerned. At the same time, it was observed that as many as 87% babies were breast-fed, which is a positive phenomenon, whereas 40% women used combined nutrition for their children (breast feeding alternately with powdered milk). The choice of a particular preparation resulted in the first place from the doctor’s recommendations, and next from babies’ preferences and friends’ opinions.
Materiał do badań stanowiły preparaty uznanych marek, przeznaczone do żywienia niemowląt w pierwszych miesiącach życia. W pobranych próbach oznaczono zawartość Pb i Cd.

The studies comprised 20 points localised in four communities of the Silesian province The aim of the investigations was to assess cadmium contents in soils, grain and straw of spring barley cultivated in the ecologically hazardous region and to describe relations between this metal contents in the soils and indicative parts of barley. It was found out that 27 of the examined soils were characterised by an increased cadmium contents, 69 of the soils were slightly contaminated and 8 of them showed medium contamination. In 42 grain samples of barley the permissible dose was exceed in the plants appropriated for consumption. A significant relationship was found between cadmium contents in the soils and their granulometric composition. Significant relationships were also registered between cadmium concentration in the soil and its contents in barley. Cadmium contents in grain was significantly correlated with organic carbon and clay fraction. However for straw, significant relations were found between cadmium contents and granulometric composition, reaction and organic matter contents.

Opis:
It was found that date seeds are suitable for biochar production due to their low moisture content 8.92%, low ash yield 1.05%, and high organic matter content 78.3%. The biochar was produced by pyrolysis at 350, 450 and 550°C. The effect of pyrolysis temperature on the physicochemical characteristics of biochar was investigated. It was found that the porosity, water holding capacity, ash content, pH, organic matter, fixed carbon, and the elemental content of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, P, Zn, Ba, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Ti, and V were increased along with pyrolysis temperature. Meanwhile, the biochar yield, bulk density, and the total content of N and S were decreased. The biochar was tested as a sustainable adsorbent to investigate the adsorption of Cd from contaminated water. The adsorption isotherms of Cd on biochar were determined based on Langmuir equation. The maximum adsorption of Cd at 25°C and pH 7 were 667, 714, and 833 mg/kg for the biochars produced at 350, 450, and 550°C, respectively. On the basis of the physicochemical characteristics of the biochar and the findings from Langmuir equation that showed the biochar produced at 550°C has the highest adsorption capacity for Cd, the desorption/adsorption experiment was carried out using the biochar produced at 550°C. The adsorption of Cd by biochar was directly proportional to the Cd concentrations. It was increased from 0.009 mmol/0.5g at 0.01 mmol Cd to 0.12 mmol/0.5g at 0.2 mmol Cd concentration. The desorption of Cd from biochar was increased proportionally to cadmium concentrations from 0.01 to 0.05 mmol and became constant above 0.05 mmol, regardless of the increment of cadmium concentrations. High retention potential for the cadmium that adsorbed within the biochar was proven in this study with desorption/adsorption percentage of 16%. These findings provide a successful example of date seeds converting into the sustainable adsorbent for Cd removal from aquatic environment to achieve the conception of eco-friendly production, which should be studied further.

Samples of pork and poultry livers (ten samples of each type, purchased in southern Poland) were analyzed in order to determine the cadmium concentration. Wet digestion of the samples was carried out and the concentration of cadmium was measured by means of graphitefurnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS). The mean values for pork and poultry livers were 79.3 µg/kg and 165.3 µg/kg, respectively. In one sample of poultry liver the Cd concentration was 1043 µg/kg, which is much more than the legal limit for the European Union (500 µg/kg). Statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference in Cd concentration between the two groups of the samples, unless the highest result (1043 µg/kg) was considered an outlier.

Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal which can cause numerous alterations in cell functioning. Exposure to cadmium leads to generation of reactive oxygen species, disorders in membrane structure and functioning, inhibition of respiration, disturbances in ion homeostasis, perturbations in cell division, and initiation of apoptosis and necrosis. This heavy metal is considered a carcinogen by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. At least some of the described toxic effects could result from the ability of cadmium to mimic other divalent ions and alert signal transduction networks. This review describes the role of cadmium mimicry in its uptake, reactive oxygen species generation, alterations in calmodulin, Wnt/β-catenin and estrogen signaling pathways, and modulation of neurotransmission. The last section is dedicated to the single known case of a favorable function performed by cadmium mimicry: marine diatoms, which live in zinc deficient conditions, utilize cadmium as a cofactor in carbonic anhydrase - so far the only described cadmium enzyme.

Concentrations of dissolved and particulate cadmium were measured in the water of the Bah´ıa Blanca Estuary, one of the most highly industrialised regions in Argentina. Simultaneously, Cd contents were also determined in samples of phytoplankton. Thus, the estuary was characterised from the viewpoint of Cd occurrence. Additionally, a microscale environment was selected within the estuary in order to carry out an ecotoxicological study. Thus, environmental parameters (i.e. temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll a) were measured weekly at Puerto Cuatreros (in the inner estuary) during winter, when the phytoplankton bloom occurs; during the other seasons sampling was done twice a week. In addition, cells of the diatom Thalassiosira curviseriata – the dominant species in the phytoplankton bloom – were isolated and cultivated in the laboratory. The monoclonal cultures obtained were exposed to increasing concentrations of Cd under controlled environmental conditions and the growth rate inhibition was measured. As a preliminary conclusion it was found that Cd levels in the Bah´ıa Blanca Estuary are significantly lower than the EC50 value for T. curviseriata.

Three multicomponent fertilizers were applied: Polifoska 8, Polifoska 16 and Polimag 306, at the rates of 0.5; 1.0; and 1.5 g N per pot. The total forms of cadmium were determined in dry matter of perennial ryegrass with the use of ASA method. The contents of these elements were higher in the fertilized variants as compared to the control. No significant differences were found among the contents of investigated elements compared in plants treated with different multicomponent fertilizers. The increasing rates of nitrogen decreased soil pH and, thereby, enhanced the availability and concentration of heavy metals in perennial ryegrass.

Opis:
The capacity of functional groups of soil organic matter to form organometallic complexes may efficiently reduce the risk of migration of toxic ions of heavy metals in the environment. Therefore, a research was conducted to determine the effect of composting and pyrolysis of Miscanthus giganteus biomass on the quality of humic compounds and on the ability of these materials to bind cadmium ions from the solution. Both processes did not cause any significantly favorable changes in fractional composition of the humic compounds of the transformed Miscanthus giganteus biomass. In the case of the unprocessed and composted biomass, changes in cadmium sorption by the materials used in the research, depending on Cd dose and how long the sample was in contact with the solution, had a similar course, which indicates that the responses taking place directly after the application of the solution that contained Cd ions were stable. In the case of thermal processing of Miscanthus giganteus biomass, it was found that Cd content in the solution decreased with time. Lower cadmium concentrations in the extracts after separation of the biomass were determined in the series with biologically transformed Miscanthus giganteus.

This study investigates cadmium (Cd) accumulation in the plant leaves of juglans regia (walnut) and cydonia oblanga (quince) trees related to traffic emissions on the highway roadside. The plant leaf samples were collected from 20 sites on the D-100 Highway roadside and washed with deionized water before analyzed. Determination of Cd was carried out using an inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometer after microwave digestion of the samples. Cd concentration on the plant leaves was found to be between 0.04–0.11 mg/kg. In order to determine the traffic-based emissions, vehicles were counted and an emission inventory was prepared. 0.18 tons of Cd was found to be delivered into the atmosphere every day. Cd accumulation depends on traffic density because there were no residential area and industrial plants. The distribution of Cd accumulation caused by traffic emissions was mapped by using a geographic information system (GIS). The maps showed that the Cd accumulation was high in the areas near the highway and then gradually decreased by moving away from the highway.

The aim of the study was to compare the levels of cadmium and lead in livers, kidneys and wool / hair / of sheep and goats reared in the vicinity of the steelworks in Nowa Huta in Kraków and in the control field, Rożniatów, in which there was no emitters of heavy metals. Samples were collected post mortem from one-year old animals of one breed (within a species) and one sex, who had lived from birth in the studied areas. Both species were fed with the same fodder and have remained in the same places. Wet mineralization was applied (mixture of nitric acid (V) and chloric (VII) (3: 1)) metal determination was done by a FASA method. The levels of the metals depend on the species, on the test areas and on the collected part of the animal. Tissues from sheep contained more cadmium and lead than the tissue of goats. The highest cadmium content was found in the kidney, lower in the liver, the lowest in the hair / wool of tested animals. Goat kidneys from both areas of research and sheep kidneys from Rożniatów meet consumer standards for cadmium. However, 20% of sheep kidneys sampled from Nowa Huta district exceeded the standards for cadmium. The lead content of both species exceeded the limit in all of the kidneys and livers from Nowa Huta district. In Rożniatów the standards were not fulfilled for all kidneys and livers of goats, and all kidneys and 70% of the livers of sheep.

Opis:
The aim of the paper was to investigate cadmium contamination of soils of the Ojcow National Park and to evaluate influence of location, soil type and soil properties on contamination degree with this element. Investigations was conducted on soil samples from 24 profiles represented main types of the park soil cover: rendzinas (13 profiles), lessive soils (8 profiles), brown soils proper (1 profile), pseudogley soils (1 profile) and river alluvial soils (1 profile).Cadmium content ranged from 0.4 to 12.8 mg kg–1 in surface horizons of investigated soils. On the base of limit values proposed by IUNG and defined in Decree of the Minister of Environment of 9th September, 2002 on soil quality standards and earth quality standards, was stated that almost all soils (except 2 profiles of lessive soils) of the Ojcow National Park are polluted with cadmium. The highest cadmium concentration was analyzed in soils located close to the Czajowice village and the town of Skala. The higher content of analyzed element was measured in rendzinas than in lessive soils. In opposite was higher accumulation index in luvisols than in rendzinas. On the base of statistical analyze were state that soil reaction and below 0.02 mm fraction content are influenced on cadmium concentration in investigated soils.
Celem badań było określenie zanieczyszczenia kadmem gleb Ojcowskiego Parku Narodowego i określenie wpływu położenia, typu i właściwości gleb na stopień zanieczyszczenia tym pierwiastkiem. Badania zostały przeprowadzone na próbkach glebowych pochodzących z 24 profilów glebowych reprezentujących główne jednostki typologiczne pokrywy glebowej parku: rędziny (13 profilów), gleby płowe (8 profilów), gleby brunatne właściwe (1 profil), gleby opadowo-glejowe (1 profil) i mady (1 profil).

Opis:
Long-term exposure to cadmium (Cd) leads to the development of a number of conditions associated with liver and kidney damage, reproductive and cardiovascular disorders, in addition to visual impairment, blindness and hearing loss, among others. Cadmium has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The toxicity of Cd is related to its pro-oxidant properties and the associated increase in oxidative stress. Antioxidant ingredients may be helpful in preventing the adverse effects of Cd. The effect of well-known antioxidant vitamins (E, C, A and β-carotene) in the prevention of Cd-induced toxicity is presented in this study. Numerous studies in animal models have shown that the effects of vitamins: E, C, A, and β-carotene were effective in reducing Cd concentrations in organs and tissues and reduced Cd-induced changes in liver, kidney, and reproductive, circulatory, nervous, immune, and respiratory systems. In contrast, the limited number of human studies does not allow to accurately determine the role of these nutrients in reducing Cd-induced toxicity, indicating the need for further studies clarifying the role of antioxidant vitamins in reducing Cd-induced toxicity. However, it seems reasonable to promote the consumption of natural food products that are sources of antioxidant vitamins in groups of people with occupational and environmental exposure to Cd.

This paper discusses the extraction of cadmium from phosphate ore by the washing method. Various parameters were investigated for the cadmium extraction from phosphate ore. The results from extraction tests showed that cadmium extraction depends on the nature and concentration of the extracting agent, the liquid/phosphate ore ratio, the temperature and the solution pH. The effi ciency of the nine extracting agents for removing cadmium from phosphate ore was found to be in the order: Na2EDTA > citric acid > tartric acid > ammonium citrate > calcium chloride > ammonium acetate > ammonium chloride > oxalic acid > ammonium hydroxide. In this study cadmium extraction kinetics was best described by the product layer diffusion control model.

The study was conducted with the purpose of experimentally developing the method of water purification from ions of cadmium (II) using a new design of a bio-plateau, which is based on the use of terrestrial plants. In order to construct the bio–plateau, the following chemically inert floating materials were used as the substrate: perlite, expanded clay, granular foam, vermiculite, cork, on top of which the seeds of higher terrestrial plants were placed. The experimental data showed that foam was the best of the tested substrates, and of plants – barley, oats, corn and rye. The constructed bio-plateau was placed into tanks with a solution of cadmium on the 9th day of incubation to study the cleaning efficiency of terrestrial plants on the aquatic environment. Determination of the residual concentration of cadmium was performed with the method of AAC at λ=228.8. As a result, it was found that rye showed the best sorption properties of the tested plants. The influence of additional aeration and pH of the medium on the degree of water purification was established. The highest treatment efficiency was observed in the variant of a bio-plateau with aeration and at a pH of 8-9. The study shows the possibility of using terrestrial plants for the phytoremediation of water bodies.

Using water hyacinth as a phytoremediation agent produces abundant biomass due to periodic harvesting in the system. One of the alternative uses of water hyacinth biomass can be a bio-sorbent to absorb metal contamination in the waters. This study aims to determine the quality of activated water hyacinth bio-sorbent, potentially reducing metal cadmium (Cd). The research was conducted from January to April 2022. The results showed that the parameters of water content, iodine absorption, and methylene blue in water hyacinth bio-sorbent had met the quality standard of activated carbon based on SNI No. 06-3730-1995. In contrast, the ash content still did not. In water, hyacinth stem bio-sorbents (stems + ZnCl2 and stems 300 °C + ZnCl2) obtained higher ash content (25.87 and 73.30%) than the ash content of water hyacinth root and leaf bio-sorbent with the same activation treatment. The optimum adsorption capacity (Qe) for the roots + ZnCl2 occurred at a contact time of 45 minutes which was 8.13 mg/g with an absorption efficiency (Ef) of 34.20%. For the root 300 °C + ZnCl2, the optimum adsorption capacity and absorption efficiency occurred at a contact time of 8 hours, namely 9.08 mg/g and 38.66%, respectively. The optimum adsorption capacity and absorption efficiency of the leaves + ZnCl2 occurred at a contact time of 4 hours, namely 7.63 mg/g and 32.12%, respectively. Meanwhile, at the leaves 300 °C + ZnCl2, the optimum adsorption capacity and absorption efficiency occurred at a contact time of 8 hours with a value of Qe = 11.84 mg/g and Ef = 49.35%.

For this study, an electro kinetic method used to eliminate cadmium from the polluted soil. This method is useful at low permeability medium. Several experiments were conducted with variable operating circumstances, using different pH purging solutions. Rice husks were used in this work as an adsorbent medium available and free of charge to counteract the reverse osmosis process that occurs and affects the work efficiency. The final results after the end of the practical experiments of this process showed that the percentages of the removal process began to increase after the pH gradually decreases. The pH of the solution for the three experiments conducted was 3, 6 and 9, respectively. The best removal rate was 68% in this process at pH 3 ; when compared with the second and third tests at pH 6 and 9, the removal ratios were 58% and 51.5%, respectively. It was discovered that the cadmium removal rate began to decrease along with voltage. At 30 volts the removal rates were 68%, whereas 20 volts they were 66%. Rice husks have been shown to be an effective adsorbent for counteracting reverse osmosis. Therefore, it can be successfully used as an adsorbent medium.

Cadmium (Cd), similarly to other heavy metals, inhibits plant growth. We have recently showed that Cd2+ either stimulates (1-4 μM) or inhibits (ł 6 μM) growth of soybean (Glycine max L.) cells in suspension culture (Sobkowiak & Deckert, 2003, Plant Physiol Biochem. 41: 767-72). Here, soybean cell suspension cultures were treated with various concentrations of Cd2+ (1-10 μM) and the following enzymes were analyzed by native electrophoresis: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX) and ascorbate peroxidase (APOX). We found a significant correlation between the cadmium-induced changes of soybean cell culture growth and the isoenzyme pattern of the antioxidant enzymes. The results suggest that inhibition of growth and modification of antioxidant defense reactions appear in soybean cells when Cd2+ concentration in culture medium increases only slightly, from 4 to 6 μM.

Opis:
Metallothionein (MT) was first discovered over 50 years ago, as a cadmiumbinding protein in the kidney of a horse. Metallothioneins are a class of ubiquitously occurring cysteine and metal-rich proteins of low molecular weight, containing sulfur-based metal clusters formed with zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and copper (Cu). In mammals, four distinct MT isoforms designated MT-1 – MT-4 are identified. The major physiological functions of metallothioneins include the homeostasis of essential metals Zn and Cu and the protection against oxidative stress and toxic effects of heavy metals such as Cd. Cadmium ,which has been classified as class I carcinogen, can stimulate cell proliferation, inhibit DNA repair, impair apoptosis and promote the development of cancer in a number of tissues. Significant quantities of Cd are introduced into the environment both by natural and anthropogenic activities, with anthropogenic activities contributing 3–10 times more Cd to the environment than natural activities. Cadmium accumulates in the human body with a long biological half-life ranging from 10 to 30 years. Cd accumulation and the aberrant expression of MTs have been found to be associated with the development of many types of cancers, including breast cancer.

Cadmium is one of the non-essential metals that have toxic effects on aquatic organisms, including diatoms. Diatoms play significant important roles in the aquatic environment, hence, the presence of cadmium will have a significance growth inhibition to its abundance. In this paper, we tried to clarify the effects of cadmium on growth, chlorophyll-a and carotenoid contents of the diatom Thalassiosira sp. Growth inhibition of the phytoplankton was determined following exposure for 96h to several different concentrations of cadmium solutions in an experiment adapted from ASEAN-Canada CPMS II. Our work shows that IC50 of growth and chlorophyll-a was around 0.32 mg/L and 0.914 mg/L, respectively. In addition, Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) and No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) were 0.18 mg/L and 0.1 mg/L, respectively. In conclusion, cadmium inhibits the growth, as well as the photosynthetic pigment contents of Thalassiosira sp.

The aim of this research was to study the effects of chemical (CH) and bioproduct (MIC) fertilizers on rice growth (plant height), rice yield (full grains), and the decrease in cadmium (Cd) contents in soil and rice grains. A silty clay loam (SCL) soil for growing rice was prepared in the laboratory, with Cd addition and pH control. The relationship between CH and MIC fertilizer additions in various amounts with the reduction in the Cd contents of soil and rice grains was explored. As a result, the rice growth in the harvest phase and the yield increased from 138.80 ± 5.72 to 888.40 ± 2.38 cm⋅plant-1 and 689 to 888 seeds⋅plant-1, respectively, when the bioproduct was increased from MIC100 (0.625 L⋅ha-1) to MIC500 (3.125 L⋅ha-1). The Cd content in the soil during the harvest phase, 35.53 mg⋅kg-1, which was less than the standard value of 37.00 mg⋅kg-1 defined by the Pollution Control Department (PCD), Thailand, decreased when the bioproduct increased to MIC500. For the Cd contents in polished rice grains, when MIC500 was added, 0.19 mg⋅kg-1 of Cd was accumulated, which is acceptable according to the Codex Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants (CCFAC) threshold of 0.20 mg⋅kg-1 for Cd. Thus, MIC500 was the most effective in reducing the Cd accumulation in soil and rice grains and promoting rice growth among all MIC amounts.

We used induced phytoextraction to follow the effect of ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA) on increase of cadmium transfer from contaminated soil (5mgCd*kg-1 and 10mgCd*kg-1) to maize plants (Zea mays L.). In the pot experiments, uptake of cadmium into roots and green parts increased after application of the chelating agent. Addition of 6mmolEGTA*kg-1 affected 90% of Cd increase in roots in comparison with EGTA non-treated variant. In green parts, addition of 6 and 12mmolEGTA*kg-1 resulted in 100% increase at the same level of Cd contamination of soil substrata. The efficiency of cadmium uptake by maize doubled after addition of 6mmolEGTA*kg-1 into contaminated soil. Application of 12mmolEGTA*kg-1 in the soil, contaminated with 10mgCd*kg-1, resulted to twofold enhancement of cadmium uptake by the maize. The results showed that induced phytoextraction can decrease cadmium content in the soil to the level convenient for growing of hygienic clean crops.

Opis:
Cataract is one of the main causes of vision loss. So far, it has been found that one of the causes of cataract formation is the accumulation of heavy metals in ocular tissues and environmental pollution. Research material consisted of blood from healthy volunteers (n = 81; Mogilno Lakeland) and those suffering from cataract (n = 90) from Ophthalmology Clinic, Bydgoszcz (2013, 2016). Samples were prepared in order to obtain plasma, which was used to analyze Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, Cd, and Hg concentration (ICP-MS). The purpose of this study is to show the interaction of cataract with cadmium and lead during initial pro-antioxidative reactions and to study element-element interactions. To this end, we analyzed physiological mechanisms that aim to stop the destructive effects of toxic metals. We have shown that the action of zinc, copper and manganese is antioxidant. Concentration of these elements is higher (α = 0. 05, p < 0.05) in the cataract group than in the control. We found interactions Fe-Cu-Zn-Mn-Pb-Cd-Hg. Cd and Pb show a negative effect on the eye tissue and generate pathophysiological changes leading to lens opacity and influence the destabilization of pro-antioxidant reactions. Correlations of elements in the control (Cd-Zn: R = 0.240; Cd-Cu: R = 0.316) and in the sick group (Cd-Cu; R = 0.329) were significant. On the basis of our research we found that there are numerous relationships between the concentrations of chemical elements in the patients with cataracts and the controls. Significant role of antagonisms with cadmium and lead has been demonstrated; these elements contribute to the gradual development of cataract. A correlation between elements exhibiting pro-antioxidant activity in the interactions with cadmium and lead (p=0.000) can be a source of cataract changes. The differences in Cd and Pb concentration and their interactions with elements between the control and sick groups can be considered as a factor for the development of cataract.

The effect of hydrothermal treatment of the gel or xerogel oftitanium phosphate (TiP) sample on the surface properties was studied usingthe EDS and FTIR ATR methods. The results show that the hydrothermal treatment of initial titanium phosphate decreases the amount of physically adsorbed water but increases the surface concentration of phosphate groups. Supplementary measurements of electrokinetic properties of modified and hydrothermally modified titanium phosphate samples confirmed an increase of the concentration of acidic groups on theTiP surface. The adsorption affinity of titanium phosphate towards cadmium ions was discussed. It was found that at a low initial concentration of cadmium ions adsorption affinity increases as a resultof hydrothermal treatment of TiP gel.

This article aims to investigate in detail to what extent surfactants affect the determination of cadmium by anodic stripping voltammetry. In recent years, the production and use of surfactants have been steadily increasing, so that their concentration in environmental water samples is rising. At the same time, it is known that organic compounds, such as surfactants, often hinder the voltammetric determination of trace elements by stripping. Non-ionic (Triton X-100, Brij 35, Tween 20, Tween 60, Tween 80), cationic (CTAB, CTAC, DTAB, HPC) and anionic (DSS, SDS) compounds were selected to investigate the effect of surfactants on the voltammetric signal of cadmium. At the same time, the extent to which the addition of Amberlite resins to the analysed solution eliminates the interfering effect of surfactants was tested. Three types of Amberlite resins XAD-2, XAD-7 and XAD-16 were selected for the study and the ratio of resin weight to solution volume was determined. Finally, the determination of cadmium in surfactant-enriched environmental samples was carried out. The recoveries obtained between 95.5 and 107%, with RSD between 3.4 and 6.2%, confirm the validity and correctness of the proposed procedure All measurements were carried out by anodic stripping voltammetry using a CNTs/SGC electrode modified with a bismuth film as the working electrode.

The total content of cadmium in soil and plant samples as well as soil factors such as organic matter content, granulometric composition, pH and electrolytic conductivity were marked in laboratory analyzes. The concentration of the element in the soils of the municipality exceeded the national regulations for agricultural land (Journal of Laws 2002). Similarly, the metal content in plants is higher than the acceptable standards for animal feed as stated in Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (2012a). The results indicate a positive relationship between the content of cadmium in the soil at the level of 0-20 cm and its concentration in the above ground parts of plants of fallow lands of the Trzebinia municipality.

Opis:
Kadm oznaczano w zakresie stężeń: 0,10 ÷ 1,00 i 0,50 ÷ 5,00 µg/l.
Cadmium and its inorganic compounds cause lung cancer. A relationship between human exposure to cadmium and its inorganic compounds and renal and prostate cancer has also been demonstrated. It is estimated that several thousand people employed in metal production are exposed to cadmium and its inorganic compounds; in metallurgy, in the production batteries, alloys, pigments, plastics and welders. The values of the maximum allowable concentration (NDS) for cadmium [7440-43-9] and its inorganic compounds in Poland were changed. The NDS value, which is meant to become obligatory from 2027, refers to the inhalable fraction and amounts to 0.001 mg/m³ . In the transition period from July 2021 to 2027, the NDS value was set at 0.004 mg/m³ . A method for the determination of cadmium and its inorganic compounds was developed, enabling the determination of this substance in the air at workplaces with the use of the atomic absorption spectrometry with electrothermal atomization (ET AAS), in accordance with the requirements of the European standard PN-EN 482. Cadmium was determined in the concentration range: 0.10–1.00 µg/l and 0.50–5.00 µg/l. The method’s determination in the air at workplaces of 0.0001 mg/m³ was obtained for, as well as the possibility of determining this substance in the concentration range of 0.00010–0.0104 mg/m³ for a 480-l air sample. The presented method enables the determination of this substance in the air at workplaces in the required range of 0.1–2 new NDS values. This article discusses the problems of occupational safety and health, which are covered by health sciences and environmental engineering.

Opis:
Zastosowano dwa szczepy drożdży: szczep dziki SP4 i szczep DSCD1-1C (Δsod1 mutant) pozbawiony CuZnSOD. Komórki drożdży hodowano na standardowej pożywce YPG, zawierającej dodatkowo jony kadmu i różne stężenia antyoksydantów (m.in. askorbinian, cysteinę, glutation, DTT, N-acetylocysteinę, Tempo, Tempol i Trolox).
Cadmium (Cd) is the main environmental pollutant, which presents a serious threat to the health of people and animals. Up to the present time, different mechanisms of the toxic action of cadmium have been described - induction of oxidative stress is one of them. Exposure to cadmium ions can intensify the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as: superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radicals or hydrogen peroxide. Cadmium also causes the decrease in thiol status and the disruption of the cellular antioxidant system. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Cd2+ on growth and survival rates of yeast cells, and to check whether supplementing media with antioxidants protects Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells from toxic action of cadmium. Two yeast strains were used: wild-type SP4 and strain DSCD1-1C (Δsod1 mutant) lacking Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase. Yeast cells were grown in standard UPD medium, involving cadmium ions and various concentrations of antioxidants (ascorbate, cysteine, glutathione, dithiotreitol, N-acetylcysteine, Tempo, Tempol and Trolox). The negative effect of cadmium was found in both yeast strains - yeast cells lacking CuZnSOD show much higher sensitivity (cadmium at a concentration of 10 μM causes complete inhibition of their growth); at the same time, wild-type strain is sensitive to cadmium at higher concentrations (25-50 μM). Moreover, it was found, that only thiol antioxidants abolish toxic action of cadmium in yeast cells.

Opis:
A high level of anthropopressure has been registered in Sevastopol region, connected with its strategic role as the main city in the region, but also due to Russian Black Sea Fleet stationing there for many years. A significant source of the Black Sea contamination in Sevastopol area is the industry located in this city, municipal waste and agriculture. Implementing measures aimed at protection of the Black Sea and the evolution of their results requires monitoring conducted in the regions with various levels of anthropopressure. The work was aimed at the assessment of copper and cadmium content in water and algae in selected bays of the Black Sea in the vicinity of Sevastopol. Samples of water and algae were collected in August 2012 from eight Sevastopol bays (Galubaja, Kozacha, Kamyshova, Kruhla, Strieletska, Pishchana, Pivdenna and Sevastopolska) and from the open sea in the vicinity of Fiolent. Algae (Cystoseira barbata and Ulva rigida) were collected from the same places. Collected water was preserved on the sampling place and brought to the laboratory where its copper and cadmium concentrations were assessed. Collected algae were rinsed in distilled water, dried, then homogenised and mineralised. Copper and cadmium content were determined in the mineralizates using ASA method with electrothermal atomisation. Cadmium concentration in water ranged from 0.13 to 1.74 μg Cd dm -3, and copper from 7.07 to 22.56 μg Cd dm,-3. Considerable differences in the content of the analysed elements were registered in individual bays. The highest content was assessed in Galubaja and Sevastopolska bays, whereas the lowest one in the water collected in the open sea and in Pivdenna bay. Copper concentrations in the analysed algae fluctuated from 3.375 to 14.96 mg Cu kg -1 d.m. No differences were noted in this element content between the algae species. Cadmium content in the algae ranged from 0.133 to 1.133 mg Cd kg-3 d.m. Higher accumulation of cadmium was observed in Cystoseira barbata than in Ulva rigida. The value of copper bioaccumulation coefficient (BC) ranged from 181 to 1201, whereas cadmium from 181 to 5256. The contents of the analysed metals, both in biotic and abiotic elements of the studied ecosystems point to anthropogenic enrichment and the results obtained for Sevastopolska, Galubaja and Kozacha bays indicate a hazardous, excessive bioaccumulation of copper and cadmium and to potential threat to the life of aquatic organisms and seafood consumers.

Opis:
Cadmium is a dangerous occupational and environmental toxin. It accumulates in the human organism mainly in liver and kidneys. Cadmium half-life is about 10 years, so the symptoms of cadmium intoxication may occur several years after the exposure. Until now in treating intoxication with this metal chelating compounds have been used, burdened with numerous undesirable symptoms. In our investigations anthocyanins from Aronia melanocarpa were used to reduce the harmful results caused by cadmium. Administering anthocyanins with cadmium chloride resulted in a statistically significant decrease of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, concentration of bilirubin and urea in blood serum and decreased cadmium cumulation in liver and kidneys in relation to animals receiving cadmium chloride only.
