Opis:
Very large, sparsely distributed, sinuous, gently dipping and occasionally branching tunnels with subordinate swells, as well as possible chambers and scratches, are described from the Hettangian Dealul Budinic Member of the Lower Jurassic continental Steierdorf Formation at Anina in the South Carpathians, Romania, and are interpreted as tetrapod burrows. No bone remains have been found in association with these structures. The morphology and large dimensions of the burrows suggest that the trace-makers were sauropsid amniotes, most probably either crocodyliforms or small-sized basal neornithischian dinosaurs, although their therapsid affinities, despite being less likely, cannot be discarded either. The age, large size and probable origin of these burrows add important information to a poorly documented period of the evolution of tetrapod fossoriality. It may be suggested that within a relatively short time interval following the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event, when environmental conditions were still marked by strongly seasonal climate with prolonged droughts as well as extreme moisture and temperature fluctuations, fossorial habit probably became yet again an endurance strategy for burrow makers.

Opis:
The huge lithosome of the Middle Miocene (Early Badenian) Mykolaiv Sands, developed at the external margin of the Fore-Carpathian Basin in western Ukraine, is recognized to represent a shallowing-up sequence. Special attention is paid to burrows of the Ghost Crab Ocypode which are pantropical in present-day littoral habitats. In the Stratyn section, burrows of this type become a crucial tool in the interpretation of basin bathymetry, which starts from distal offshore depths, through the foreshore, to the backshore where the Ocypode burrows record a temporary break in sedimentation. Lithification of the sand layers and the Ocypode burrows subsequently progressed in beachrock mode. The Stratyn section demonstrates that the development of submerged shoals and/or emergent parts, throughout the huge mass of the Mykolaiv Sands, is probably responsible for their great variation in thickness in western Ukraine, which has long proved difficult to explain.

A new kind of trace fossil characterized by filled ellipsoidal chambers interconnected by a boxwork of burrows, shafts and tunnels, in different horizontal planes, is observed in the medium-grained fluvial sandstone of the Pliocene Lower Tipam Formation in the Amarpur area of Tripura in northeast India. The chambers have variable dimensions with lengths of 3-16 cm, widths of 3-10 cm and heights of 2-6 cm. Diameters of the connecting tunnels and shafts are 0.8-0.9 cm on average. The traces are considered to be nest systems of social insects. The discovery is noteworthy as far as the geology of Tripura state is concerned, as such chambered traces have not previously been reported from the Indian sub-continent. Morphology of the studied specimens point toward a new ichnospecies, Vondrichnus amarpurensis isp. nov. of the ichnofamily Krausichnidae.

Opis:
The heterogeneity of soil environment is an important factor of the taxonomic and ecological diversity of the soil animal population. The con¬tribution of invertebrates to the formation of aerial space in mineral soil horizons, in the form of a stable system of biopores, is considered on the basis of the author’s original materials and literature data. Aerial space is the necessary condition for the life of aerobiotic forms in the mineral soil, which comprise the bulk of soil invertebrates belonging to meso- and macrofauna. Zoogenic mechanisms of the formation of soil pores and soil aggregates are analyzed. Pore walls and aggregate surfaces are populated by different groups of pedobionts. The partial isolation of these loci decreases predation, that creates conditions for the maintenance of a high diversity and abundance of animal populations in the restricted volume of populated soil profile.

To the activity of alpheid shrimps genus Alpheus Weber, 1795) ascribed are the tiered burrows of a gridlike appearance from Lower Kimmeridgian oolitic shoals and Middle Oxfordian nearshore micritic limestones of the Holy Cross Mountains, Central Poland. The burrow networks are confined to beds of the soft or hard bottom type, the upper parts of which are more or less deeply truncated, to indicate erosional events of storm agitation. At low stand, the open burrows served as traps for solutions derived from the nearby hypersaline lagoons of the sabkha type, to cause precipitation either of dolomite, or of silica gel. At high stand, the open burrows, exemplified by the Małogoszcz section (Lower Kimmeridgian), became taphonomic traps and/or crevice habitats for diverse biota, the echinoderms in particular, to form their graveyards (EchinodermenlagerstŹtten). In these, represented are echinoids (tests, some spine-coated, all either empty, or sediment-filled; broken tests and their fragments, spines) stalkless crinoids (cusps, centrodorsals, radials, brachials, cirrals), stalked crinoids (columnals, pluricolumnals), starfish (marginalia, ambulacral plates), and ophiuroids (vertebrae, arm plates). Eco-taphonomic pathways for particular echinoderms (21 taxa taxonomically recognised) are interpreted since their death to burial in open burrows. Spine-coated echinoids were entrapped alive, others were swept into during successive storms which acted as a lethal agent. The storms, catastrophic for echinoderm communities, have prevailed through a longer timespan, when the alpheid-burrowed shoal evolved from the soft bottom to the hard ground colonized by a successive echinoderm community dominated by stalked crinoids.

At Moenkopi Wash along the Ward Terrace escarpment of northern Arizona strata of the upper Dinosaur Canyon Member of the Moenave Formation contain sedimentary structures we interpret as casts of tetrapod burrows. Sandstone casts and in situ burrows occur concentrated in two horizons that extend several hundred meters along the Ward Terrace escarpment. The structures, hosted in beds of eolian sandstone, form interconnecting networks of burrows that branch at right angles. Individual burrow casts have sub-circular cross sections and consist of nearvertical tunnels and horizontal to low-angle galleries that connect to larger chambers. Most burrow casts measure 5 to 15 cm in diameter, are filled by sandstone of similar grain size as the host rock, and have walls that are unlined and lack external ornamentation. Bedding plane exposure of the lower horizon reveals that the density of burrows exceeds 30 vertical tunnels per square meter. One exposure in the upper horizon reveals burrows concentrated in a mound-like structure with 1 m of relief. Rhizoliths, distinguished from burrows by their typical smaller diameters, calcareous infilling, and downward branching, co-occur with these burrows in the upper horizon. The fossil burrows in the Moenave Formation appear to have been constructed by a fossorial tetrapod with social behavior similar to the modern Mediterranean blind mole-rat. Although no skeletal remains are associated with the burrows, the fossil record suggests that the most likely producers of the Moenave burrows were tritylodontid cynodonts.

Opis:
Early diagenetic concretionary flint nodules from the Upper Oxfordian oolitic and micritic limestones represent silicified crustacean burrows. Their occurence is confined to very shallow carbonate facies of barrier, lagoonal, and tidal flat origin. Fills of crustacean burrows commonly provided a nucleation centre for flint formation and thereby the template on which flint nodule beds were constructed. The reason for the special relationship between flint and crustacean burrows probably lie in the original texture (high permeability) of the burrow networks and also in the organic content (including the microbial assemblages) lowering the pH. Nodule horizons are developed more or less parallel to bedding, to form several widespread horizons of the regional correlative significance.

Large-diameter burrows in pedogenically modified floodplain deposits in the Salt Wash Member, Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation, southeast Utah, U.S.A., are interpreted to have been constructed by mammals. They are distinguished as Daimonelix martini isp. nov., which exhibits a helical shaft down to a horizontal tunnel with a mean depth of 71.4 cm from the inferred palaeosurface. The mean path length of the shaft is 99.4 cm; mean dip of the whorls is 39°. The mean tunnel length is 42.3 cm. Shafts and tunnels are oval or elliptical in cross section with the horizontal diameter slightly larger than the vertical (ratio of -1.26:1); the shaft averages 9.2 cm wide and 7.3 cm tall; the tunnel averages 10.7 cm wide and 10.7 cm tall. The tracemaker was likely a fossorial mammal that used the burrow as a den to shelter when not foraging above ground; the burrows are domichnia. The other from the same member is Fractisemita henrii igen. nov. et isp. nov., a network of interconnected shafts and tunnels; shaft and tunnel segments are straight, curved, or helical. The segments are at angles of 0-89°; mean length of a section is 30.7 cm. The cross sections of all elements are oval or elliptical; the mean width is 6.3 cm and the mean height is 4.9 cm (ratio of -1.29:1). The burrows are interpreted as the work of a social mammal and represent multiple tracemaker behaviours: protection, denning, foraging, and possibly food storage. The burrows are polychresichnia. Surficial morphologic features preserved on the burrow walls of both types are interpreted as scratches made by the tracemaker claws and/or teeth. The burrows reveal the actions of small vertebrates not recorded by body fossils showing potential partitioning of the environment and availability of resources for small vertebrates.

Two types of large, branched structures from the Lower Pleistocene (Calabrian) high-energy calcarenites of Favignana Island are described: Faviradixus robustus gen. et sp. nov. and Egadiradixus rectibrachiatus gen. et sp. nov. They may be interpreted as root structures of large plants, trees and trees or shrubs, respectively. The former taxon co-occurs with the marine animal trace fossils Ophiomorpha nodosa, Ophiomorpha isp., Thalassinoides isp. and Beaconites isp. The interpretation as root structures although tentative is probable and can be related to short emergence episodes for the formation of E. rectibrachiatus or to longer emergence, responsible for the discontinuity at the base of the overlying Tyrrhenian deposits, for F. robustus. Calcified root mats of smaller plants associated with the Tyrrhenian or younger emergence surfaces are common.

During the Middle and Late Cambrian in the area of the present-day Holy Cross Mountains all the traces of infaunal activity were produced by animals burrowing parallel to and immediately below the sediment surface, deeper infaunal burrowers being missing. Deeper penetration was probably not possible due to anoxic conditions within the sediment. This was not the case in the Early Cambrian, where numerous deep vertical burrows with spreite structures are known in the area. Diversity of the Middle and Late Cambrian trace fossil assemblages of the Holy Cross Mts is low, with only six ichnogenera of non-arthropod traces in the Middle Cambrian and eight ichnogenera in the Late Cambrian, compared with 24 ichnogenera in the Early Cambrian. The most unusual is a large hemispherical burrow, possibly of actinian origin, for which the name Bergaueria elliptica isp. n. is proposed. Treptichnus rectangularis isp. n. represents horizontal burrows with stiff walls, being systems of short units connected with one another. Some of the units contain faecal pellets produced by the host animal.
Profil kambru Gór Świętokrzyskich składa się z naprzemianległych piaskowców i łupków tworzących formacje o znacznej miąższości. W skałach tych właściwym skamieniałościom towarzyszą ślady działalności życiowej organizmów. Oprócz znanych i wcześniej notowanych śladów działalności organizmów zostały opisane dwa nowe ichnogatunki, tj. Bergaueria elliptica i Treptichnus rectangularis. Pierwsza z tych form, opisana na podstawie jednego okazu, jest wyjątkowo dużym śladem spoczynku, prawdopodobnie ukwiała. Istnieją przypuszczenia, że mógłyby to być jednak organizm zbliżony do przedstawicieli fauny ediakarańskiej. Nory Treptichnus rectangularis są efektem penetrowania osadu przydennego przez organizm zbliżony bądź do priapulidów bądź do echiuroidów, który pozostawił w otwartych norach grudki fekalne. Większość znanych po-kambryjskich śladów działalności życiowej organizmów miała swój początek w płytkich wodach mórz kambryjskich, przy czym większość z nich pojawiła się już we wczesnym kambrze. Na omawianym obszarze w porównaniu z wczesnym kambrem (24 ichnorodzaje) liczba ichnorodzajów w środkowej i późnej epoce jest niższa i wynosi odpowiednio 6 i 8 ichnorodzajów, przy czym obserwuje się brak śladów głębokiej penetracji w obrębie osadu, jak też skomplikowanych sieci i meandrów. Dane z Gór Świętokrzyskich potwierdzają ogólnq regułę o spadku zróżnicowania śladów działalności organizmów z początkiem środkowego kambru. Brak głębokiej penetracji osadu wynikać może ponadto z anoksycznych warunków panujących płytko pod jego powierzchnią. Najbardziej pospolity ichnorodzaj Planolites występuje w całym profilu i jest w zasadzie niezależny od facji, chociaż jego frekwencja w profilu jest bardzo zróżnicowana. Treptichnus, Multina i Gordia są rzadsze i zależne od facji. Natomiast skrajne ubóstwo śladów organicznych w obrębie formacji łupków z Gór Pieprzowych potwierdza wcześniejsze ustalenia o osadzaniu się skał tej formacji w strefie głębszej niż litoralna a ponadto z deficytem tlenu w wodach przydennych.

Opis:
Structures discovered near Mar del Plata are attributed to palaeoburrows built by fossil animals on the basis of morphological patterns, transgressive boundaries in relation to the sedimentary units, and the presence of claw marks on the walls and roofs. They are discrete features of several metres in length, and with subrounded cross sections. Their diameters range from 0.80 to 1.80 m, with the width generally exceeding the height. These structures occur in Pleistocene deposits containing mammals referable to the Ensenadan and Lujanian Ages. Several Xenarthra are good candidates as builders of these burrows. Palaeoburrows were attributed before to the large Pleistocene armadillos Propraopus, Eutatus, and Pampatherium. We consider the possibility that the mylodontid ground sloths were responsible for excavating the burrows. The similar diameters of the burrows and the sloths are consistent with this observation. Anatomical, allometric, and biomechanical analysis of sloths limbs indicates that they were well designed to perfonn such activity. The shape of some claw marks preserved on the sides and roof of the burrows fits the form of their hand skeleton. Thus, the mylodontid sloths Scelidotherium and Glossotherium are considered as possible builders for the large late Cenozoic burrows present in the Pampean region.

The Mykolaiv Sands are a huge lithosome of Middle Miocene (Badenian) age, accommodated within the Fore-Carpathian Basin in the Western Ukraine. Typically developed in the area of Opole Minor, it spreads across adjacent regions of Opole to cover an area of about 1300 km2. The varied sedimentary structures and ubiquitous burrows, indicate their development as a stack of sand shoals or related bodies, up to a few tens of metres thick, some of which temporarily reached sea level. Amidst the shoals, storm scours intermittently formed channel-like infills, some with residual lags at the base. The reversed density stratification and/or an increasing gravity gradient involved mass movements, some of which may have been triggered by seismic shocks focused at the shore or the adjacent hinterland of Podolia and Volhynia. Special attention is paid to the diverse fossils, all taphonomically filtered (aragonite shells and chitinous carapaces being lost), but which locally are mass-aggregated. They typify particular sand sets/bodies, to form allochthonous assemblages, some members of which (the cirripedes Scalpellum and Creusia, the shark Hemipristis, the ray Myliobatis) are newly recognized in the Ukrainian part of the Fore-Carpathian Basin. The others enrich considerably the faunal content of the Middle Miocene (Badenian) Paratethyan basins, either in terms of taxonomic diversity, or the eco-taphonomy of selected taxa (the starfish Astropecten, diverse echinoids). The whole faunal content of the Mykolaiv Sands may owe its profuse development to the global Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum of early Badenian age.

Opis:
A new ichnogenus and ichnospecies Rosarichnoides sudeticus is proposed for a large, exceptionally well-preserved crustacean burrow, which has been found in the Upper Cretaceous (Coniacian) Quadersandstein of the North Sudetic Synclinorium (Czaple quarry). Some of its specimens have been assigned to Thalassinoides saxonicus (Geinitz, 1842). It is unbranched, a characteristic rosary-shaped trace fossil, which consists of alternating chambers (swellings) and constrictions. The burrow is without any wall and usually lack ornamentation and has a passive fill. It should be included in ophiomorphid group sensu Bromley (1996). This unique finding resembles modern crustacean burrows produced by shrimps or crabs. Additionally, Thalassinoides paradoxicus (Woodward, 1830), the starfish Astropecten scupini Andert, 1934, the inoceramids Inoceramus kleini Müller, 1888 and Inoceramus sp. were found in the same sandstones. The trace fossils are indicative of the archetypal Skolithos ichnofacies that is typical of foreshore to middle shoreface settings.

Opis:
Ham Cliff near Redcliff Point, Weymouth, Dorset (SW England) exposes one of Europe's most complete Callovian-Oxfordian boundary sequences and has consequently been identified as a potential candidate GSSP for the base of the Oxfordian Stage. The boundary sequence lies within the thick mudrock facies of the Oxford Clay Formation and is abundantly fossiliferous, cardioceratid ammonites in particular being conspicuous. By convention, the stage boundary is drawn at the first occurrence of the genus Cardioceras here represented by C. redcliffense Page, Melendez and Wright at the base of the Scarburgense Subchronozone of the Mariae Chronozone. Associated Perisphinctoidea (including Peltoceras, Alligaticeras and Euaspidoceras) provide additional biostratigraphical information. Other macrofossil groups show less discernible changes, although frequent belemnites (Hibolithes) provide new highresolution carbon and strontium isotope data which are consistent with global curves and continuous sedimentation across the boundary interval. Magnetostratigraphic information is also available. Foraminiferal assemblages are dominated by epistominids but include a flood of early planktonic forms, including ?Globuligerina oxfordiana (Grigelis) immediately above the boundary. Well-preserved nannofloras are dominated by Watznaueria with conspicuous Zeugrhabdotus, podorhabdids and Stephanolithion indicating the NJ14 Biozone. Ostracoda and holothurian spicules are also recorded. These results are synthesised to provide a multidisciplinary, integrated review of the suitability of Redcliff Point for the definition of an Oxfordian GSSP. Correlations with the French candidate site in Haute-Provence are discussed and proposals made for formally establishing a GSSP for the base of the Oxfordian Stage in Europe.

Among composite trace fossils, one of the most common structures throughout the Phanerozoic are structures (e.g., dwelling trace, feeding trace) reworked by Chondrites and/or Phycosiphon. However, differences in the nature of the reworking behaviors of these two ichnogenera remain unknown. Thus, in this study, composite Phymatoderma specimens from the Neogene deep-marine Shiramazu Formation in Japan, particularly those reworked by Chondrites and Phycosiphon, were analyzed to reveal the specific conditions that might control the activities of these trace-makers. Phymatoderma reworked by Phycosiphon is significantly larger than non-reworked Phymatoderma, whereas Phymatoderma reworked by Chondrites shows no significant difference in burrow diameter compared with non-reworked Phymatoderma. The recognized size selectivity (i.e., preference for larger burrows) by the Phycosiphon trace-maker can be explained by considering the different feeding strategies of these two ichnogenera; namely deposit-feeding Phycosiphon-makers, which must have processed a significant mass of sediment to obtain sufficient organic matter, whereas chemosymbiotic Chondrites-producers did not require a lot of sediment to obtain nutrients. In order to test these interpretations, a dataset of Phanerozoic trace fossils reworked by Chondrites/Phycosiphon were compiled. Consequently, the Phycosiphon-pro-ducers' preference toward relatively larger burrows was recognized, quantitatively supporting the results of this study. The compilation also indicates that the burrow size might have become one of the important limiting factors for the Phycosiphon-producers that tried to rework the sediments within previous subsurface burrows, at least for 80 million years.

The paper presents an analysis of three texts pertaining to the H.P. Lovecraft mythos: two stories from the end of the nineteenth century which inspired Lovecraft (Ambrose Bierce’s “An Inhabitant of Carcosa” and Robert W. Chambers’ “The Repairer of Reputations”) and a graphic novel inspired by the author from Providence, Rhode Island, his works and his inspirations (Alan Moore’s and Jacen Burrows’ Providence). Through analysis of the texts (and images) and setting them both against each other and against critical approaches, the paper demonstrates the differences in the portrayal of alternative worlds as elements of (possibly skewed) perception rather than an objective external reality. The case study serves as the basis for demonstrating what the analyzed texts imply to be the social and practical implications of changes, partly resulting from the reception of literature, in subjective perception.
Artykuł służy analizie trzech tekstów istotnych z punktu widzenia mitologii opartej na twórczości H.P. Lovecrafta: dwóch opowiadań z końca dziewiętnastego wieku, którymi Lovecraft się inspirował („Mieszkańca Carcosy” Ambrose’a Bierce’a i „Naprawiacza reputacji” Roberta W. Chambersa) oraz powieści graficznej zainspirowanej przez autora pochodzącego z Providence w stanie Rhode Island, jego twórczość i jego inspiracje (Providence Alana Moore’a i Jacena Burrowsa). Poprzez analizę tekstów i obrazów oraz zestawienie ich ze sobą i podejściami krytycznymi, artykuł wykazuje różnice w reprezentacji światów alternatywnych jako elementów (potencjalnie wypaczonego) postrzegania, a nie obiektywnej rzeczywistości. Studium przypadku służy jako podstawa do wykazania, jakie wynika z analizowanych tekstów praktyczne i społeczne znaczenie zmian w subiektywnym postrzeganiu świata, częściowo będących skutkiem odbioru tekstów literackich.

Opis:
In this study effects of burrowing by badgers and foxes on forest soil and vegetation were examined. Burrow digging resulted in increasing topsoil alkalinity and changing the availability of some nutrients. Soil disturbances supported higher diversity of herbaceous and woody plants, and favoured the occurrence of fugitive and nutrient demanding species. Badgers had stronger impact on soil and vegetation than foxes.
