Opis:
Currently we deal with so many meanings of ‘body art’ that it is practically impossible to explicitly define what kind of art it is. Just like to unify so many different ways of conceiving what or – even better – who the body is in such kind of art. Is it an instrument, a medium, a subject or a work of art? Trying get the answer to this question I explore the essential functions of a body in art from three perspectives: firstly the cognitive one (including autoreflexive abilities of bodily experience), secondly from the perspective of positively understood limited nature of a human body, and finally I take into consideration a mediatory status of corporeality. In my reflections I base on Jean-François Lyotard’s and John D. Caputo’s philosophical investigations in a general nature of human experience and sensibility. What (Who) Is the Body in Body Art?

Analyzing the body condition and its status in the technicized, postbiological world – where the body no longer consists an element of nature – the artistic discourse overlaps with the science discourse not only in terms of research subjects, but also research conclusions. However, both perspectives differ one from another in terms of the applied research methods. This article collates the major issues of the contemporary humanistics, such as: disagreement with ageing, interference in human body, transplantology, genetics, exhibicionism with the thematic of the chosen pieces of art.

A surface of a human skin determines a border between outer and inner sphere. Tightness of this division, however, is a subject to permanent perturbation. It makes human skin a fascinating mean of communication. The visual arts (ex. body art) and literature derive from that potential. In that context, human skin appears as a place where Julia Kristeva’s distinction between « symbolic » and « semiotic » diffuses. A body becomes a corps parlant (speaking body). This process of body writing is analyzed by a collation of Lorette Nobécourt’s book La Démangeaison (Itching) and some body art’s enterprises.

Opis:
The author discusses the relationship between art and the body, as exemplified by the similarities and differences in the works of: two Japanese artists, Matsui Chie (b. 1960) and Higashikage Tomohiro (b. 1978); and the Polish artist, Mirosław Bałka (b. 1958). These examples are referred to in the context of a unique project recently conducted in Japan — the Tatsuno Art Project 2013. Held with the support of the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, the project aims to present contemporary art to people from across Japan and around the globe, and to capitalize on the region’s unique cultural heritage, creating opportunities for people to communicate with local residents and making Tatsuno a more dynamic and popular place to visit. This paper considers various connections between art and the body by focusing on a selection of works included in the Tatsuno Art Project 2013: Arts and Memories. Known in past centuries as the ‘little Kyoto’ of Harima Province, Tatsuno is an atmospheric old castle town. It is mild and relatively warm all year round, with the climate of the nearby Seto Inland Sea region, said to be similar to that of the Mediterranean. Thanks to the support of numerous people, the organizers were able to hold the 2013 event which represented the culmination of their efforts over the past few years, being the largest ever in terms of scale with nine invited artists, eleven other participating artists, and one contemporary musician, for a total of 21 creators contributing works. With new spaces added to create a total of 16 venues, the community‑wide project truly achieved its goal of presenting the ‘historic castle town as a museum’. The project curators were also able to strengthen Tatsuno’s international ties by inviting artists from France and Poland to take part, as well as Japanese artists residing in the UK and Spain.

Opis:
Practice of visualization of patriotic moods of Ukrainian people in the form of body art (tattoo-regalia), which became more intensified during and after the Revolution of Dignity, is analyzed in the article. It is proved that pro-Ukrainian body art as a kind of “body language” is a socio-political (patriotic) marker. In the article there is argued that the human body is not only biological, economic or virtual unit, but also a semiotic (sign) one; it acts as a kind of text, related to the social construction of identity; a set of specific social signs, symbols and codes. Tattoo-regalia is considered by the author as a symbolic expression of social interaction, mean of visual of non-verbal communication through the transformation of the natural structure of a man. It is noted that the patriotic body art is external corporeal expression of cultural meanings, which is manifested in tendencies among the Ukrainians to put patriotic images: tridents, embroidered ornaments, images of “Heaven Hundreds”, Cossack images. The author emphasizes that the good reason to put patriotic tattoo is an ideology: tattooregalia perceives by others as a visualization of a clear identification of the person with certain events in life of the state and the nation. It is proved that modern Ukrainian patriotic body art expresses emotions and (or) individual awareness of belonging to a particular social and personal position within social roles (Ukrainian, patriot, a fighter for certain national values). Attention is paid to the fact that the current practice of patriotic body art is associated with markers of both personal and the group (national) identity.

Opis:
Body art and performance art are often discussed together, and even identified as the same thing. A careful analysis of these artistic trends and the accompanying theoretical commentary tends, however, to highlight their differences. Body art turns out to be a phenomenon manifesting significant similarity to the modernist conception of art in the spirit similar to the concept of Clement Greenberg, while performance art largely rejects these assumptions. Performative aesthetics developed by Erika Fischer-Lichte on the one hand stems from challenging modernist artistic essentialism, but on the other emphasizes the role of “the radical concept of presence” of the artist. The article presents a detailed analysis of two new creative achievements of Marina Abramović, the artist associated both with body art and performance art: Seven Easy Pieces (2005) and The Artist is Present (2010). The indicated ambiguity of performance art has been radicalized in their case. They combine the modernist emphasis on authenticity, presence, and essentialism with the postmodern penchant for citing. The phenomenon of pastiche described by Frederic Jameson has been transformed in such a way that it is no longer empty but takes over the whole of the performer’s self. The term “neomodern” is used today in a variety of meanings. The issues discussed in the article suggest the possibility of understanding it as overcoming the oppositions characteristic of modernism and postmodernism, while maintaining some of the features of these two trends regarding their respective approaches to art.
Sztuka ciała i performance art często omawiane są łącznie, a nawet utożsamiane. Uważna analiza tych tendencji artystycznych oraz towarzyszących im komentarzy teoretycznych skłania jednak do zaznaczenia dzielących je różnic. Body art okazuje się wówczas zjawiskiem wykazującym istotne związki z modernistycznym pojmowaniem sztuki w duchu zbliżonym do koncepcji Clementa Greenberga, natomiast performance art założenia te w znacznym stopniu odrzuca. W artykule szczegółowej analizie poddane zostały dwa nowe dokonania twórcze Mariny Abramović, artystki łączonej zarówno ze sztuką ciała i performance art: Seven Easy Pieces (2005) oraz The Artist is Present (2010).

The article deals with the subject of art made with body parts of animals. The motive of a dead animal has been present in art since its beginning; in cave paintings and later in Flemish still lives. Yet it is contemporary art that tries to go even further. Instead of representing dead bodies, the artists simply use them. They could be “mere” dead flies, or giant sharks. Andrzej Pitrus discusses taxidermy, which normally is not considered a proper art, but many “real” artists use this technique as well. Some ethical issues are also discussed, because many of the works are nowadays sold for steep prices. Where does the critical art end, and exploitation start? It is hard to answer this question, which nevertheless sould be asked.

European painting; image of human body; body in art; idealization of human body
Opis:
The human body has always been one of the most important subjects for European artists. But the way it is displayed in art has varied in different epochs. In ancient Greece, a canon was constituted that proclaimed an ideal vision of the body, derived from the rules governing the universe. This idealization of the human body, neglected in the Middle Ages, was re‑established in Renaissance and Classicist art. However, Renaissance artists also created another image of the human body by borrowing from patterns mainly found in nature, and started to depict their models not in an ideal but rather in a more natural shape. The new non‑ideal forms of art that appeared in Mannerist art made the artists develop a much wider artistic language, which brought into being a variety of individually interpreted artistic representations of the human body. It preceded similar phenomena which became widespread in the twentieth century. Thus, the human body was not always displayed in art as strong, healthy and beautiful. On the contrary, the martyred bodies of Christ and the saints, as well as the depictions of aged, tired or ill people, also carried enormous artistic expression. A distinct problem has occurred with the ways in which corpses have been presented in art. The review concludes with a reference to the contemporary trend called Body‑Art that involves various artistic activities, such as happenings and performances, where the human body is itself used as a significant work of art.

Opis:
In the basic system of visual arts the human body is subject to the first interpretations, artistic and semantic evaluations. In the studies on art it was the principal criterion of style and artist’s workshop. In the most ancient research on early medieval art and the mature Middle Ages the stylistic definitions of the human body were assumed to be the basis of the classification of art, its relationship with ancient tradition or its various divergences, which were given pejorative names. The classical character of divergences from that model in the context modelling the body allows us to establish the chronology of works from the times of the fall of pagan art up to the new forms of Christian art. An interesting study on the human body (not on nakedness) help us to take a closer look on how Roman art, especially French sculpture, was established in the circle of Benedictine orders. Starting from the classical model of Mediterranean art it created a new understanding of the body in accord with the strict text of the Bible, which — instead of corporeal unity — stressed the importance of its members. An analysis of particular excerpts from the Bible, providing the sense of the hip, the knee, the eye, the head, and the hand allow us to explain the analysis of the body into its members often called deformation. Some examples of monumental sculpture in Moissac, Cluny, and Wezelay unveil the sense of this deformation in the Judaic, not Roman, context of understanding the body. Italy and its influence have retained the Mediterranean, Roman traditions in the shaping of the human body. Thereby they continued the classical model for Gothic art and sculpture in the cathedral milieus. The body and the wealth of its corporeality is shown by sculpture returning to the Roman model again, thereby unveiling the scale of psychological values, such as smile, depicted in the sculptures in Reims, Naumburg, and Lincoln. We may notice in medieval art two patterns by which to show the body: classical and Judaic that comes from the Bible.

This article has as its topic the Danish artist Dan Sterup-Hansen (1918–1995) and his paintings and prints on the subject of blind people with canes as well as works related to these. Sterup-Hansen was active as an artist from a young to an old age, but made a significant artistic contribution in the decades following World War II. During this period, he explored a number of themes related to cold war anxiety and the cultural trauma of the World War II. These themes centre on the human body and a phenomenological perception of the world. They are humanitarian in spirit and are related to Sterup-Hansen’s left-wing political views of solidarity, humanism, and advocacy for change and reconstruction after the World War II.

The subject of the investigation is the theatrical performative action treated as a para-exploratory, para-analytical practice. The questions posed relate to the possibilities and consequences of pragmalinguistic analysis used in artistic practices concentrated on the institution of school and its social subjects. On the basis of The Pedagogical Body, a performance created by a group of school teachers from the Theatrical Institute in Warsaw, the author analyzes the collective mechanisms for the creation of a performative script and on that basis – for further cultural scripts generated for Polish school institutions. The performative action is treated here as a reflexive practice, focused on the professional activity of teachers and operating within the category of mime. The social aspects of participation in projects of this kind are analyzed in terms of paranoid reactions and mechanisms of exclusion in the work places.

Opis:
Zmiana ta implikuje osadzenie percepcji dzieła sztuki w doświadczeniu, redefinicję roli odbiorcy, otwarcie na życie codzienne i rzeczywistość społeczną i polityczną.
In the text, the author refers to the work of the artist Hélio Oiticica and Brazilian Neo-Concretism in order to show, through an analysis of a series of works Parangolés, the revolutionary change that has occurred in the approach to the artwork since the 1960s. It is a journey from the artwork as an object to an ephemeral event with its implications, such as the noticing the artwork in experience, redefinition of the role of the viewer, the opening to everyday life and social (as well as political) reality. In her analysis, the author focuses on the series Parangolés, created between 1964-68, to show how dance became for Oiticica a medium of transformation of art as well as of the social life. Parangolés look like colourful sheets or long scarves. They are made without considering the size of a particular body. By wrapping oneself in them, one has to adapt them to one's figure and, by mastering the matter, create a composition in space. They are thus experienced as a kind of mobile sculpture that moves with or directly on the user.
