Opis:
In the paper a potential application of potato tubers for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions was investigated. Sorption of Cu2+, Fe5+ and Pb2+ was studied for different salts in order to determine the influence of counter anions on the cation uptake by the investigated adsorbents. Potatoes in the form of raw and dried potato cubes and the peels were soaked in 5 % aqueous solution of the following salts: copper(II) acetate, chloride and sulfate, iron(III) chloride and nitrate(V) and lead(II) acetate and nitrate(V). After sample wet mineralization with HNO3 and HClO4, the total metal content was determined by the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The inner structure of the applied sorbents was determined by using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sorption was found to be dependent on both the cation and the anion present in the solution. Acetate ions significantly enhanced the metal uptake from the solution. In all studied samples the uptake of Pb2+ was most effective in comparison with that for the other cations. Among the sorbents, the potato peels have taken higher, than it was obtained for the others, amount of metals, and the raw potato cubes were more effective compared with the dried ones. The metal uptake was positively correlated to the moisture and protein content as well as the amount of Ca2+ and K+ ions in the initial samples. It was also related to the inner structure of used potato materials. The obtained results should be useful in the recovery of the heavy metals from the environmental samples.

Opis:
This paper is related to study the using sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) as a low-cost adsorbent for removing the phenol compounds from aqueous solutions by adsorption under different operating conditions in a batch unit. The SEM and FTIR tests were performed to determine the morphological characteristics and the functional groups existing on the adsorbent material, respectively, while the surface area was identified by means of two techniques which were blue color method and BET method. The results of the adsorption experiments showed that the efficiency of the removal process is inversely proportional with initial concentration of phenol, pH and temperature; while the efficiency was directly proportional to adsorbent amount, agitation speed and treatment time. The results showed that the percentage of removal of phenol from processed water solutions ranged from 25.446% to 90.125%. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were chosen to estimate the amounts of phenol adsorption by the sea lettuce powder. The kinetic study shows that the adsorption was obeyed pseudo second order also the thermodynamic parameters were calculated.

Opis:
The use of guava seeds (GS) and acid-modified guava seeds (MGS) for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions was investigated. Batch-type experiments were performed with Cr(VI) aqueous solutions and biosorbents to determine the kinetic and equilibrium sorption parameters. Results indicated that GS and MGS were capable of reducing and remove Cr(VI) from solutions, but the reduction was only observed at some experimental conditions. Infrared analysis showed that several functional groups were involved in the reduction, and biosorption of Cr(VI), particularly alcohol, phenolic, carboxylic, and methoxymethyl structures. The mechanisms of reduction and biosorption depended upon the type of biosorbent, pH, and temperature of the system. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model describes the kinetic sorption data, and the Langmuir-Freundlich (L-F) model describes the isotherm data in most cases. Significantly high total chromium biosorption capacities were obtained. Acid modification of guava seeds improves chromium biosorption performance.

In this research, the batch removal of Pb2+ ions from wastewater and aqueous solution with the use o two different modified algae Gracilaria corticata (red algae) and Sargassum glaucescens (brown algae) was examined. The experiment was performed in a batch system and the effect of the pH solution; initial concentration and contact time on biosorption by both biomasses were investigated and compared. When we used S. glaucescens as a biosorbent, the optima conditions of pH, Pb2+ concentration and equilibrium time were at 5, 200 mg/L and 70 min, in the range of 95.6% removal. When G. corticata was used for this process, pH 3, 15 mg/L pb2+ concentration and 50 min contact time, resulted in the maximum removal (86.4%). The equilibrium adsorption data are fitted to the Frundlich and Langmuir isotherm model, by S. glaucescens and G. corticata, respectively. The pb2+ uptake by both biosorbent was best described by the second-order rate model.

This study examined the biosorption process of Ni(II) and Zn(II) from an aqueous solution by dead biomass of Yarrowia lipolytica. Optimum biosorption conditions were determined as a function of pH, biomass dosage, contact time, and temperature. The biosorbent was characterized by FTIR, which indicated the participation of hydroxyl, carboxyl, amide and amine groups in the process of binding the metal ions. The results showed that the biosorption processes of both metal ions closely followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The equilibrium data of Ni(II) and Zn(II) ions at 20, 30 and 40°C fitted the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Langmuir isotherm provided a better fit to the equilibrium data, with a maximum biosorption capacity of the Y. lipolytica biomass for Ni(II) and Zn(II) of 30.12 and 44.44 mg/g respectively. The calculated thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that the biosorption of Ni(II) and Zn(II) ions onto the Y. lipolytica was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic.

Chitosan is naturally abundant biopolymer that could be used as chelating sorbent for removal of metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study the uniform-sized chitosan microspheres and their modified derivatives were prepared by using the one stage membrane emulsification process. The obtained sorbents were used for removal of chromium VI ions. The sorption evaluation was carried out at different initial ion concentrations and allowed to fit the experimental data to Langmuir isotherm in the case of unmodified materials and to Freundlich isotherm in the case of modified microspheres. The highest sorption towards chromium has been shown by unmodified chitosan with medium molecular weight. The calculated maximum sorption capacity for this polymer was found to be 1.6 mmol/g.

Opis:
Adsorption of Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions onto the waste powdered activated sludge biomass (PWB), which was obtained from the biological wastewater treatment plant, was investigated in this experimental study. The effects of contact time, pH, temperature, initial sorbate and sorbent concentrations on the adsorption were determined. The BET surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter of PWB were found to be about 0.51 m2/g, 0.0053 cm3/g, and 41.4 nm, respectively. Considering the R2  value, qexp  and qcal , the Langmuir and Freundlich models were well described for Cu(II) and Ni(II) adsorption, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) and Ni(II) onto the PWB could be better simulated by the pseudo-second-order kinetic mechanism than the pseudo-first-order, intra particle diffusion and Elovich models. Thermodynamic aspects of the adsorption of heavy metals were also investigated. Considering the applied desorbing agents for reuse of PWB for Ni(II) recovery, desorption cycle is not feasible due to the deterioration of the PWB structure.

Biosorption is fast, effective and low cost process. It takes place in a wide range of temperature and it can be used for almost all types of heavy metals. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of locally collected green macro algae to remove copper, chromium and cadmium from synthetic wastewater. The fresh algae were converted into dry powder as biosorbent. In the investigations, 1 g of macro algae powder was exposed to synthetic waste water contaminated with 10 mg/L concentration of copper, chromium and cadmium in separate exposure for 2 hours. The best removal efficiency for copper, chromium and cadmium were 70%, 80% and 85%, respectively, from the initial concentration of 10 mg/L. While macro algae are abundantly available in marshlands of south Iraq, it can be preferably utilized as biosorbent to remove heavy metals from the industrial wastewater.

The authors investigated sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions on selected natural wastes: sunflower hulls, walnut shells and plum stones. The chemical and physical structure of the surface of these sorbents was determined using infrared spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy. The most favourable physicochemical parameters of the sorption processes were also defined. The sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions was described according to the Langmuir and Freundlich models. It has been shown that the adsorbents studied can be effectively used in removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The sunflower hulls have the highest sorption capacity for Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions. It is equal to 36.93 mg/g for the Pb(II) ions and 19.93 mg/g Cd(II) ions. The calculated values of thermodynamic functions indicate a spontaneous (ΔGº< 0) and exothermic (ΔHº< 0) nature of the sorption processes. A participation of ion exchange in these processes is significant. Desorption tests confirm that the adsorbed heavy metals can be recovered and the sorbent materials after regeneration can be reused.

Opis:
In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of cadmium and zinc adsorption and desorption from solutions containing single metals and a mixture of metals in the ratio of 1:2 by activated sludge immobilized onto chitosan (ASC). The optimal pH value determined for metals adsorption ranged from pH 5 to pH 6, whereas that established for desorption reached pH 2. In the case of individual metals, the state of adsorption equilibrium in the solution was achieved after 180 min, whereas in the case of a metal mixture – after 270 min. In the case of desorption, the state of equilibrium was achieved after 45 min. It was stated that both adsorption and desorption proceeded according to the pseudo-second order reaction. The study enabled determining the maximum adsorption capacity based on Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips models. The Sips model was found suitable for the description of adsorption of single metals onto ASC, whereas both Sips and Freundlich models – for description of the adsorption of a metal mixture, which was indicated by the determined values of R2 coefficient. The adsorption capacity of ASC determined from Sips model for individual solutions of cadmium and zinc reached 216 and 188.3 mg/g d.m., respectively, whereas that determined for their mixture reached 106 mg/g d.m. for both metals.

The silage from common maize Zea mays L. originated from the Department of Agrotechnology and Plant Production Management, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. Before experiments, the silage was dried at a temp. of 60°C for 12 h and then sieved through a sieve with mesh diameter of 0.25 mm. The scope of analyses included determinations of: the effect of biosorbent dose on the course of adsorption process, optimal time of dyes adsorption, and correlation between type of dye and effectiveness of the adsorption process. The effectiveness of RB5 and BV10 adsorption from aqueous solutions onto silage was analyzed based on a correlation between the quantity of adsorbed dye Q (mg/g d.m.), and its equilibrium concentration C (mg/dm3). Results obtained were analyzed with the use of four sorption isotherms: Freundlich, Langmuir, double Langmuir, and Redlich-Peterson. Poorer fit of experimental results to the model was achieved only in the case of Freundlich isotherm. The remaining three models were very well describing the results. Owing to the presence of negative functional groups like e.g. –COOH and –OH in silage, it has a negative charge in aqueous solutions. This has a beneficial impact on the effectiveness of sorption of positively-charged cationic dyes. In turn, electrostatic repulsion of a negatively-charged surface of a biosorbent and anionic dyes exerts a negative effect on sorption effectiveness. The maximum sorption capacity of silage determined for the cationic dye BV10 was ca. 180 mg/g d.m. and was significantly higher than the sorption capacity assayed for the anionic dye RB5 - ca. 80 mg/g d.m. In comparing the achieved results for the sorption of the analyzed dyes RB5 and BV10 onto maize silage with the effectiveness of dyes sorption on other biosorbents, it may be concluded that the waste maize silage displays very good sorption properties and may be successively applied for dye removal.
