Hélène Cixous constantly challenges any generic categorization and any autobiographical reading of her works, despite strong autobiographical evidence identifying the writer to the narrator. This challenge, as curious as it is, nevertheless has a reason to be. The works of Helene Cixous put into a narration a hybrid “I”, both fictional and real, a “Me” on the edge of a dream, which cannot have any real reference, so much so that it is impossible to read them as an autobiography, strictly speaking. Whether Les Rêveries de la femme sauvage. Scènes primitives or Le Jour où je n’étais pas là or even Philippines Prédelles, the autobiographical works on which the present study is based all have in common a challenge to any autobiographical reading.

The main aim of this paper is to show how model of family changed through the centuries (especially in XIX and XX century). Objects of examinations are women’s autobiographies treated as very interesting archive of different topics – one of them is family. Family in women’s personal documents isn’t only a topic, but also it shapes private stories. Autobiographies in this perspective solidify stories about families and help to settle up with family memory, it positive and negative side. Gender aspects of narrations makes more visible cultural, related with customs and historical contexts shaping model of family. In this text traditional and unconventional families are going to be presented as well as relations between family members.

W ten sposób odpowiada na pytania dotyczące budowania/konstruowania podmiotowości matki i próby ich zapisu wykorzystujące formę felietonu, publicznego odczytu, eseju, bloga.
The reading of three contemporary texts concerning maternity became the basis for searching for the answers to the following questions: how the autobiography of a mother might be written nowadays and why women choose this genre – what is the aim of fitting these texts into autobiography. The author interprets the texts of Agnieszka Graff (Matka feministka), Rachel Cusk (Praca na całe życie. O początkach macierzyństwa) and Małgorzata Łukowiak (Projekt matka. Niepowieść) and uses the methodology of postcolonial research. In this way the author tries to answer the questions. These questions, included in journals, public appearances, essays or blogs, concern building/constructing subjectivity of mother.

W „Autobiografii” będziemy śledzić, jak ewoluują stare przekazy autobiograficzne (list, autobiografia, silva rerum, dziennik, pamiętnik…); a także rejestrować to, co dzieje się z ich współczesnymi wariantami (e-mailem, blogiem, internetowym komiksem autobiograficznym, autorską stroną internetową, profilem na FB, kroniką rodzinną w sieci…). Będziemy pytać, jak te nowe formy wypowiedzi oddziałują na dotychczasowe narracje osobiste i jak modyfikują dzisiejsze sposoby ekspresji, również poprzez wprowadzanie do pisma elementów innych sztuk. Krótko rzecz ujmując – zamierzamy opisywać rozmaite warianty coraz częściej uprawianej autobiografii multimedialnej.
In Autobiography we will be tracing the evolution of traditional autobiographical texts (such as letter, autobiography, silva rerum, journal, memoir etc.) as well as comment on their contemporary versions (e-mail, blog, autobiographical webcomics, personal webpages, facebook profile, family online chronicle etc.). We will be asking about the influence these forms have on the hitherto personal narratives and the way they modify today’s forms of expression, including the way the written forms incorporate other forms. In brief: we will be researching various modes of the evergrowing trend of multimedia autobiography.

This article is a proposal of identity research through its process and narrative character. As a starting point I present a definition of identity understood as the whole life process of finding identification. Next I present my own model of auto/biography-narrative research inspired by hermeneutic and phenomenological traditions of thinking about experiencing reality. I treat auto/biography-narrative research as a means of exploratory conduct, based on the narrator’s biography data, also considering the researcher’s autobiographical thought. In the final part of the article I focus on showing the narrative structure of identity and autobiography. I emphasise this relation in definitions qualifying autobiography as written life narration and identity as a narration of autobiography.

In life narratives, authors unveil their lives, and autobiography also inspires authors from Muslim Arab societies. In contemporary societies, some authors have talked about their “ego” without fully revealing all their secrets. Things are more complex in a Maghrebian context in which disclosing and recounting one’s life (childhood, adolescence or even adult life) becomes a vital act. Our reasoning in this paper consists in showing that, to Malika Mokeddem, despite the criticisms and taboos, writing and being emancipated are no impediments; on the contrary, these taboos or proscriptions have motivated and served her life choices. Algerian authors often write about themselves by referring to their childhood, education and readings. Often the history of their country is at the center of their autobiographical novels. In this article, we focus on Malika Mokeddem’s childhood and adolescence, two very important periods for her, and proceed to analyze the different processes used by the novelist who in her autobiographical works seeks to “recover” her identity.

Aim/Thesis. In this  inquiry, the author  examines the  12th chapter of the 2nd letter of Paul  to the Corinthians in a hermeneutical way, highlighting its relevance for a Christian's spiritual autobiography  and emphasizing the influence  it has had on the later development of the genre. Concept/Methods.  Using patristic exegesis (like that of Saint Chrysostom)t and also that of more recent authors dedicated to this theme, he tries not only to present and explain the event, but also to offer new interpretive keys for  reading it.  Results and conclusion. The approach focuses on keywords and phrases like "the rapture", "glimpse" or "thorn in the flesh" and it tries to presents Paul's understanding of the link between the spiritual experience of encountering  God and the suffering that follows it, as a useful  means of humbling a person. The research also highlights some important examples that show how the Apostle influenced the style and the way of thinking of later authors like Saint Augustine or Saint Silouan from Mount Athos. Originality/Cognitive value. The relevance of showing why Saint Paul's second letter to Corinthians (12, 2-) represents the beginning of the spiritual autobiography in the Christian space is a very big one due to the fact it can helps the reader to have a deeper understanding of latter spiritual autobiographies like the one of Saint Siluan, father John of Kronstadt, Teresa of Calcutta or Maria Faustina Kowalska.

Opis:

The article analyzes women's autobiographies published in the most recent edition of Soviet Lithuanian writers' autobiography collection Tarybinių Lietuvos rašytojų auobiografijos (Autobiographies of Soviet Lithuanian writers, ed. Aldona Mickienė, Vol. I and II, 1989). Due to their professional careers, the Soviet Lithuanian female writers were part of the patriarchal and normative elite of the society, and thus acted as secondary characters of the said elite. In order to be treated as equals, the female writers, just like their male counterparts, primarily tried to present themselves as professionals, hence their autobiographies are dominated by public activities. On the other hand, the autobiography as a secondary genre, served well to express personal observations that were not considered fit for other, more official genres. The article aims to highlight the complex connection between personal traits of an individual and his or her living conditions the way it is reflected in autobiographies. It is then helpful to review the women's autobiographies written during that timeframe by relying on both, the research traditions of women autobiographies as well as the documentary studies of the Soviet society.
Materiał badawczy niniejszego artykułu został zaczerpnięty z biografii litewskich pisarek, opracowanych i zebranych w publikacji Tarybinių Lietuvos rašytojų auobiografijos [Autobiografie pisarek radziecko-litewskich t. 1-2, red. Aldona Mickienė, Wilno 1989]. W artykule zwrócono uwagę na to, co, zdaniem pisarek, należało mówić o sobie i co - na podstawie tej narracji - można sądzić o standardach społecznych narzucanych kobietom. Pisarki były częścią patriarchalnego, normatywnego społeczeństwa, w którym ich rola była drugorzędna. Pragnąc dorównać mężczyznom, starały się kłaść nacisk na swoje życie zawodowe, dlatego dominującym tematem ich autobiografii jest działalność społeczna. Z drugiej strony autobiografia, jako gatunek marginalny, stanowiła wygodny pretekst do wyrażenia osobistych przekonań, co w innych gatunkach literackich nie było wówczas możliwe. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie złożonego związku pomiędzy indywidualnymi cechami osobowościowymi i specyfiką życia w czasach sowieckich. Autobiografie stanowią zarówno bogate źródło badań pisarstwa kobiecego, jak i studium dokumentalistyki społeczeństwa w czasach sowieckich.

Na skrzyżowaniu myślenia postsrtukturalistycznego, psychoanalizy i teorii afektów, autoanaliza ma polegać na pogłębionej relacji z samym sobą, wobec której klasyczna autobiografia pozostaje tylko na powierzchni poznania. Intymna teoria literatury Rolanda Barthes'a jest tu swoistym otwarciem na tego rodzaju przestrzeń rozróżnień. Autorka skupia się na analizie afektu miłosnego, która pomaga jej zaprezentować przygodny charakter bodźca do samopoznania. Jest to afekt, który zostaje tu wpisany w przedmiot zainteresowań literaturoznawców chcących zmierzyć się z zagadnieniem autoanalizy.
The author comes up with a theoretical proposal to extract autoanalysis from autobiography. At the crossroads of psychoanalysis, poststructualism and the affect theory concepts, autoanalysis shall be based on deepened relation with oneself, in opposition to the classical autobiography, which stays only on the surface level of cognition. Intimate theory of literature by Roland Barthes opens up to this type of area of distinction. The author focuses on the affect of love, which helps her present unexpected stimulus of getting to know one self and simultaneously define the auto-analytic perspective of literature research.

In this essay I attempt to analyse Joseph Conrad’s ‘autobiography’ - as it is presented in Some Reminiscences - with particular reference to the enduring cultural patterns that it exhibits. According to the configurationist or “culture and personality” approach elaborated by American anthropologists such as Ruth Benedict and Ralph Linton, patterns of behaviour transmitted within particular cultural groups permanently configure the personality model of its members both at the level of everyday behaviour and at the level of ideal patterns. This is confi rmed by an analysis of Conrad’s autobiography, in which the writer draws on the ideal patterns of the culture of the Polish eastern borderlands (which he acquired during the process of socialization) - not only in order to analyse his own personality, but also to govern his behaviour in completely different cultural contexts. Even more interestingly, these behavioural patterns have confi gured the particular model of the world that is reflected in the very structure of Conrad’s works. In this connection the influence of the gawęda or ‘Polish nobleman’s tale’ would seem to be indisputable. It is not so much that Conrad alludes to this literary convention in his autobiographical reminiscences, but rather that he uses it to re-create the model (based on cultural patterns) of the imagination of a Polish nobleman from the eastern borderlands. Moreover, this culturally determined writing strategy is used in Conrad’s other works.

Benvenuto Cellini is one of the great sculptors of the 16th century. Already in his time, his works were admired in Rome, Paris and his native Florence. Beyond his works, his popularity has remained unchanged over the last four centuries thanks to his autobiography. This autobiography is an essential work for gaining first-hand knowledge of the sculptor's work, but also, and especially, of the anthropological vision of culture at the time. This article attempts to show this vision and at the same time to highlight how the reading of this autobiography is an example of how following one's vocation is a fundamental help in overcoming difficulties.

Artykuł jest próbą nadpisania znaczeń do już istniejących analiz kilku autobiografikcyjnych tekstów Heleny Deutsch. Świadomość tekstualnego charakteru obydwu dyskursów: psychoanalizy i autobiografii dała asumpt autorce Konfrontacji z samą sobą do podjęcia swoistej gry z odbiorcą rekonstruującym biografię. Reprezentacje podmiotu potwierdzają jedynie to, że jest on nie tyle rekonstruowany w opowieści, co wciąż stwarzany, pomiędzy normatywem prawdy i fikcji, pragnienia i spełnienia. Kryptonimowanie sensów rozwija ten pasjonujący rodzinny romans, jakim niewątpliwie jest autobiografia Deutsch oraz teksty ją uzupełniające, w niemożliwy do zatrzymania obrotowy ruch tropów, supozycji i hipotez.
The article is an attempt to add meanings to the already existing analyses of selected autobiographical- fictitious texts by Helena Deutsch. The awareness of the textual character of both discourses: psychoanalysis and autobiography prompted the author of Confrontations with Myself to play some kind of a game with the reconstructing the autobiography recipient The representations of the subject only confirm that the latter is not so much being reconstructed in the story as created over and over, between the standards of truth and fiction, the desire and fulfillment. Codenaming of senses develops this absorbing family affair which Deutsch’s autobiography as well as the accompanying it texts are, in a difficult to stop rotary movement of tropes, suppositions and hypotheses.

Zgodnie z tą analizą autoportrety Zagajewskiego zbliżają się charakterem i funkcją do ćwiczeń duchowych opisywanych przez Pierre’a Hadota: poeta za ich pomocą próbuje przebudować swoją osobowość, projektując jej bogatszą i dojrzalszą postać, częściowo na wzór postaci mistrzowskich, takich jak Józef Czapski. Tak ujęta, twórczość Zagajewskiego zaskakuje bogactwem treści teoretycznych, których dotąd w niej nie poszukiwano.
The article analyzes a series of Adam Zagajewski’s self-portraits against the backdrop of his essays as well as a variety of contemporary theories, especially Paul de Man’s deconstruction and Michel Foucault’s spirituality philosophy. According to this analysis, Zagajewski’s self-portraits are approaching the kind of spiritual exercises described by Pierre Hadot: Zagajewski uses them to try to rebuild his personality, having designed its richer and more mature version, partly following the example of Zagajewski’s masters, such as Józef Czapski. Understood in this way, Zagajewski’s works contain a surprisingly wealthy theoretical substance, heretofore unrecognized by commentators.

Identity as an omnipresent category in science, art and life is considered by the author in reference to man. The author is mainly interested in an individual identity as revealed in writing. It is most fully revealed in autobiographical writing. Considerations on the subject of autobiographical identity are preceded by a reflection on the identity of existence as contained in philosophy already since the times of Hume, in the writings of theologists and in essayist discourses. Roughly speaking, two conceptions are outlined in the writings of an autobiographical character, especially the ones which belong to the Franconian culture.

W artykule opisuję różnorodne tekstualne strategie polskich, homoseksualnych dzienników z pierwszej połowy XX wieku. Omawiam kwestię ich gatunkowego uwikłania w relacji do założycielskich, dla gejowskiej autobiografii, tekstów André Gide’a i Oscara Wilde’a oraz wskazuję na podobieństwa i różnice w sposobach konstruowania homoseksualnej podmiotowości. Na podstawie spostrzeżeń Judith Butler, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick i Michela Foucaulta, wskazuję na performatywną sprzeczność intymistycznych gatunków wywiedzionych z autobiograficznej tradycji wyznania w odniesieniu do sytuacji homoseksualnego podmiotu, a także rekonstruuję reguły jego tekstualnej widzialności na przykładzie dzienników Jarosława Iwaszkiewicza i Jerzego Zawieyskiego.
In the article the author describes diverse, textual strategies of Polish homosexual diaries from the 20th century. The author discusses the issue of their complex genetical relation to the founding texts of gay autobiography by André Gide and Oscar Wilde and he is pointing at resemblances and differences in the ways they construct the homosexual subjectivity. Basing on observations by Judith Butler, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and Michel Foucault, the author is pointing at the performative contradiction of genres deduced from the autobiographical tradition of confessing in the situation of homosexual subject, and I am also reconstructing rules of textual visibilities of the homosexuality on the example of diaries of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and Jerzy Zawieyski.

The twentieth century witnessed the birth of a feminine strand of autofictional writing coming from the ancient colonies, of which Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade, by the francophone Algerian writer Assia Djebar, and the Arabic Memory in the flesh, by the Algerian writer Ahlam Mosteghanemi, are emblematic. Whether it be in the Arabic or French language, the women writers of the Maghreb risked writing an autobiography in a culture that stresses the anonymity of women. The coming to writing for these women is often accompanied by a desire – or necessity – to revisit the collective past from a female perspective. For these women, literary writing also meant writing their stories on the palimpsest of dominant history, in order to carve their place in it. To fight the forced amnesia of historical discourse constructed by man, they must create works that give voice to the stories silenced by the totalizing male narrative. Djebar and Mosteghanemi both insist that the emancipation of women is possible only if the subaltern woman becomes subject not object of her story/history.

W artykule rozważymy przypadek pojedynczej ocalałej z Holokaustu i prześledzimy, w jaki sposób jej poczucie siebie wyłania się z fragmentów archiwalnych oraz poprzez własne, skonstruowane archiwum świadectw. Cztery autobiograficzne teksty – dwa nagrane zeznania i dwa wspomnienia – tworzone w różnym czasie kontrastują w sposobie przedstawiania narracji oraz jej wyborów i działań pod groźbą przemocy. Zestawiając obok siebie archiwa i teksty, można dostrzec zarówno ograniczenia, jak i możliwości świadectwa Holokaustu jako rodzaju autobiografii.
Autobiography is often writing about how a “self” forms over time as it is affected by the conditions it encounters. This definition can be problematic for Holocaust autobiography, because hiding one’s self from others and repressing one’s desires and impulses became crucial to survival. This essay traces the processes by which a “self” emerges for one Holocaust writer and survivor, Helen S., through archival documents, testimonies and memoirs over time. Helen S.’s example demonstrates how an effaced self can have a textual presence before the writer can allow herself to fully inhabit a traumatic personal history.

W artykule przedstawiono postać autorki pierwszej rosyjskiej autobiografii, Nadieżdy Durowej, która w męskim przebraniu spędziła dziewięć lat jako oficer w rosyjskiej armii. Szczególną uwagę autorka zwraca jednak na dopisaną po latach do zapisków z okresu kampanii napoleońskiej część wstępną, w której Durowa opisała swoje dzieciństwo. Poza poruszeniem tematyki transgenderowej, stosunkowo często podnoszonej w stosunku do Durowej, opis ten pozwala na pokazanie świata kobiet w Rosji i na Ukrainie w początkach XIX wieku, a także na zarysowanie wstępnej mapy różnic pomiędzy kobiecymi postaciami arcydzieł literatury rosyjskiej (autorstwa mężczyzn) a narracją osobistą opartą na doświadczeniach ze świata kobiecego.
This text presents Nadezhda Durova, the author of the first Russian autobiography, who, in male clothing, spent nine years as an officer in the Russian army. The special interest is paid to the introductory part in which Durova returns, after many years, to her diary notes from the period of the Napoleonic campaign, adding in a description of her own childhood. Apart from the commotion of the transgender theme, raised relatively often in relation to Durova, this description allows for a view into the world of women in Russia and Ukraine at the beginning of the 19th century, as well as a preliminary mapping of the differences between female figures in the masterpieces of the Russian literary canon (as written by men) and a personal narration, based on experiences in a woman’s world.

Autorka sugeruje jednak, że wykorzystanie narzędzi literaturoznawczych i świadomość roli, jaką odgrywa autobiografia we współczesnej nauce o literaturze, może okazać się wartościowym uzupełnieniem propozycji płynących z nauk społecznych.
The text is an analysis of a set of scenarios of biographical workshops made by Kamila Lasocińska and Joanna K. Wawrzyniak called Autobiography as a creative challenge. The author draws attention to the interdisciplinary nature of the volume and asks question about place of literary in the publications that have a practical use in biographical education. Creation of self-narration as a method of supporting the development of not only the elderly, is justified in sociology, psychology and in pedagogy which is nearest to the authors’ discipline. The author suggests, however, that the use of literary’s tools and awareness of the role of autobiography in contemporary literary criticism, may be a valuable addition to the proposals that come from the social sciences.

Nabokov’s text contains three types of conceptual metaphors based on visual effect: MEMORIES ARE A SERIES OF FLASHES,MEMORIES ARE PERSONAL GLIMMERS and TO RECOLLECT IS TO JOURNEY BACK.Such metaphorical images are conveyed in translations in which many semantic shifts and transformations occur.

Artykuł dotyczy zmian w metodologiach humanistycznych. Wychodząc od etapu badań nad tożsamością grup, odwołuje się do tekstu Ewy Domańskiej i zastosowanych w nim metafor poszukiwania nowych tematów i obiektów jako nawigowania po morzu. Za istotne uznaje podejście autobiograficzne, akcentujące doświadczenie badacza. Przykładem takiego podejścia są interpretacje powieści Bolesława Prusa Lalka, weryfikowane w przebiegu życia. Najszerzej omówiony został przykład wpływu autorefleksji na teorię na podstawie książek Susan Faludi (Backlash, In the Darkroom).
The article follows dynamic changes and evolutions in the history of research theories in the field of humanities. It begins with an analysis of studies on group identity, and drawing from ideas by Ewa Domanska, it employs the metaphor of the see as the space in which one can navigate for new themes and ideas. A special importance is attached to the concept of autobiography, especially in reference to the researcher’s life and experience. Boleslaw Prus’s The Doll and its critical reception offers a good case study to illustrate this approach of analysis which draws on private lives of interpreters and critics. The influence of autobiography on literary theory is analysed using Susan Faludi’s Backlash and In the Darkroom.

The article raises an issue of possible relations between autobiography (comprehended largely, as a way of writing about oneself) and popular romantic literary genre, poetic tale. The analysis of George Byron’s, Adam Mickiewicz’s and Juliusz Słowacki’s works shows that, in spite of various genre connections with autobiographical literary genres, poetic tale functions in early Romanticism as an autobiography of romantic generation. It tells a story about psychic and emotional capacities of human being, but notes added to the text lead the reader to a thesis that this is a story about its author. In Janet Verner Gunn’s terms it means that in poetic tale one can observe an union of three moments essential for autobiography: an autobiographical impulse, autobiographical perspective and autobiographical reaction of a reader.

The article is focused on the relations between autobiography and present-day narcissism, which takes a whole new turn within the cyberspace. On the one hand, we can observe significant popularity of autobiographical literature, on the other – more and more people create their image using internet and social media. Therefore the author is trying to answer to a significant question: what is the main connection between new media and autobiographical literature?

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę omówienia związków autobiografii z filozofią feministyczną na przykładzie myśli filozoficznej Luce Irigaray. Pomimo że tradycyjna filozofia zwykle uchodziła za dyscyplinę spekulatywną, a zatem wyraźnie antybiograficzną, ponieważ rozpatruje to, co pomyślane i dane w postaci filozoficznych konceptów w oderwaniu od ich materialnych korzeni, to właśnie feministyczne filozofki i teoretyczki uwypukliły materialny charakter wiedzy przez uwydatnienie jej cielesnego, płciowego, historycznego czy kulturowego usytuowania. W tym sensie autobiograficzność filozofii feministycznej rozumiem jako strategię zarówno polityczną, jak i prywatną, akademicką i osobistą, teoretyczną i praktyczną, ontologiczną i epistemologiczną, biorącą udział w produkcji wiedzy.
The article discusses the relations between autobiography and feminist philosophy, taking Luce Irigaray’s thought as an example. Although traditional philosophy usually has been perceived as anti-biographical, as it divides philosophical concepts from its material roots, feminist philosophers and theoreticians exposed materiality of knowledge by stressing the importance of its bodily, sexuated, historical, and cultural situatedness. In this sense autobiography of feminist philosophies is understood as both, public and private, academic and personal, theoretical and practical, ontological and epistemological way of knowledge production.

The article presents the three main types of relations between psychoanalysis and autobiography. Psychoanalysis is defined as an autobiographical practice that has become a science. Autobiography also provides its most important therapeutic technique. Moreover, in the light of Freud’s theory, any given autobiography can be understood in terms of screen memories.

Opis:

The goal of this article is to comment on the fragments of Aleksander Pieńkowski’s autobiography concerning his stay in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Pieńkowski, a shopkeeper in a Polish village, was one of the Polish citizens in areas of Poland annexed by the Soviets after 17 September 1939, who were arrested, investigated, tortured by KGB and deported in 1940 to labour camps in northern Russia. After the amnesty for the Polish deportees in 1941, he was allowed to leave his labour camp in Pechora and go to Uzbekistan to be recruited into the Polish Army. Since the southern Soviet Republics of the USSR were not prepared to deal with the great waves of Poles and Polish Jews arriving in Central Asia, he spent some time at various railway stations in Uzbekistan and was sent to southern Kazakhstan where he worked in a co-operative farm, but mostly served local Kazakhs, before he could finally cross the Soviet-Iranian border in 1942.

Opis:

The paper points out the importance of autobiography as a significant form of literary development. It is characterised by its main and typical features from the point of view of the most influential cultural thinkers. It expresses the general meaning of (chosen) individuality in the background of contemporary context and versatile (determined, diverse) contacts. By such an object, it comes to the axiom that it is a kind of (re) presentation of the world, the period, creative people and their efforts in the cultural, literary, prosaic field. After general observations, the paper deals with the Kulpín native Albert Martiš (1855 - 1918), a prominent figure among the Slovaks in Serbia; then a resident, citizen, teacher, minority author within the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. It mentions the author's work, his memories of childhood and school years, but also his contemporary life. Based on this, it also reflects on unusual themes and portrayals of artistic material from the aspect of Martiš's short story-making. It analyses his versatile cultural-enlightening activity, with emphasis on his autobiographical features and short stories. This type of memoir literature presents Albert Martiš - according to literary criticism - from his best creative side. At the same time, the article interprets, from an objective-subjective point of view, his commemorative prose with autobiographical elements entitled Memories of the Lower Land Revival. Based on the documentary character of this work, the text analyses surroundings, social situations and prominent cultural and literary “workers” of the time. With special regard, it emphasizes the life and work of Albert Martiš, his gradual confirmation of education, morality and character, of course, in the background of the examined prototexts. The paper points out the most typical features of this segment of his literary work in the mentioned short stories, in which their specific diversity (even characteristic) is particularly interesting. The interpretation method from the position of perceptive reading presents various (concrete) elements of autobiography, which not only derive the typical features of Albert Martiš´s author idiolect, but also the overall social "atmosphere" of the Lowland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this way, the individual and collective memory of the past is being concretised at present, thanks to the interpreted prose, which is in fact a kind of media in various contexts of the cultural-literary tradition of all of us (also in the future).

Autor stawia tezę, że na szeroką skalę autobiografie pojawiły się w Polsce dopiero u schyłku XX wieku – ich miejsce zajmowały przedtem liczne przedsięwzięcia pamiętnikarskie. W celu udowodnienia tej tezy autor w pierwszej kolejności zarysowuje różnicę pomiędzy autobiografią a pamiętnikiem, sytuując te formy wypowiedzi intymnej w obrębie odmiennych tradycji antropologiczno-filozoficznych. Następnie dokonuje przeglądu recepcji autobiografii w Polsce, by wskazać, że właściwa autobiografii optyka wewnętrzpodmiotowa była – ze względów historyczno-politycznych oraz kulturowych – traktowana jako akt ekshibicjonizmu. Znacznie lepiej w kontekst polski wpisywała się natomiast forma wypowiedzi pamiętnikarskiej, która akcentuje relacyjne usytuowanie podmiotu (określa go wobec narodu, historii, społeczeństwa itd.).
The author argues that autobiographies appeared in Poland on a large scale in the late 20th century – unlike the memoirs which were previously the most popular form of intimate expression. In order to prove the point the author explains at first the distinction between autobiography and memoirs by situating them within different philosophical and anthropological traditions. Subsequently, he reviews the reception of autobiographies in Polish culture arguing that so far – due to historical, political and cultural reasons – an introvert point of view which is an inherent attribute of autobiography was treated like an act of exhibitionism. The extrovert point of view proper to memoirs in which the subject is defined in relation to somebody or something (nation, history, society) seems to suit better the Polish context.

Tematem artykułu jest studium przypadku – analiza fragmentów autobiografii Sofii Dubnow-Erlich dotyczących okresu międzywojennego. Bliższe spojrzenie na teksty autobiograficzne autorstwa związanej z Bundem aktywistki i literatki umożliwia prześledzenie jej podejścia do własnych planów życiowych, a także szerszy ogląd żydowskiej historii aktywizmu, działalności intelektualnej i politycznej w II Rzeczypospolitej. Lektura wspomnień pozwala również uchwycić perspektywę genderową i pokazać, czy i w jakim stopniu płeć kulturowa wpływała na podejmowane przez autorkę działania.
The subject of this article is a case study based on analysis of Sofia Dubnow-Erlich’s autobiography fragments concerning the interwar period. A closer look at the autobiographical texts written by the activist and writer associated with the Bund allows to trace her approach to her own life plans. It also gives a broader look at the Jewish history of activism, and intellectual and political activity in the Second Polish Republic. Reading the memoirs allows us to capture the gender perspective and shows whether and to what extent the gender influenced the actions taken by the author.

Georges Perec uprawiał różne formy pisarstwa autobiograficznego. Pamiętam że jest zbiorem 480 zapisów, całość oznacza nieciągłość pamięci i autobiografii. Pisarska koncepcja Pereca znalazła potwierdzenie w jednym z późniejszych tekstów Lejeune'a, który napisał, że nie wierzy już w pojedynczą autobiografię, lecz w teksty autobiograficzne.
Georges Perec's works represent a various forms of autobiographical writings. I remember is a collection of 480 records, whole book proves a discontinuity of memory and autobiography. In one of his latest works Philippe Lejeune writes he just don't believe in single autobiography, but in autobiographical texts.

The main aim of this text was attempt to create a definition for comprehension “autofiction”. Those artistic strategies were revealed as a way of connecting fiction with sphere of intimate experiences. Autofiction may be perceived as alteration of autobiografical writing, which is maintenanced on specific contract with readers and which is an important part of contemporary practices of communication.

This paper sets out my acquaintance with the work of ESREA since 2016, my reading about autobiographical research and the development of my ideas for a study of The Companionship of Books or what is now known as bibliotherapy. I have defined this as how reading books can help to make us feel better. The paper looks at what kind of books this might be and suggests that most may be found in the area of literature, although not exclusively so, and other types such as autobiography or natural history books are suggested. Theories underpinning bibliotherapy are put forward both by literary specialists and by psychotherapists. The views of my own literature students are also set out and examined as are my own views. I refer to my own early experiences of the restorative power found in literature, particularly poetry, and this is referred to as part of a longer autoethnographic enquiry into the subject which this paper is the preface to. A number of personal stories relating to reading books for assistance in difficult times are referred to, again poetry featuring significantly, but also the value of libraries in supporting and enabling individuals to survive life’s rigors. Finally, a parliamentary report is mentioned, referring to the role of the arts in general as a source of improving our mental wellbeing and the contribution to played by two of its proponents in furthering this aim. In my conclusion the importance of adult education is stressed in ensuring that The Companionship of books can help us to progress in a post-pandemic world.

Artykuł przedstawia ewolucję na przykładzie utworów Erwina Kruka Rondo, Kronika z Mazur i Spadek. Zapiski mazurskie 2007–2008 – przedstawia ewoluowanie postawy autobiograficznej pisarza, wyraźnie ujawniającej się po 1989 roku i wpisującej się w nurt tak zwanych ponownych autoprezentacji. Celem autorki jest też wskazanie zmian formalnych i artystycznych w sposobie wykorzystania tworzywa biograficznego.
This article is based – on a reading of Erwin Kruk’s Rondo, Kronika z Mazur, Spadek. Zapiski mazurskie 2007–2008 (Roundabout: A Masurian chronicle; Legacy. Masurian notes, 2007–2008). It explores the evolution of the writer’s autobiographical attitude, which became particularly clear after 1989 and it inscribed itself in the trend of “re-self-presentations”. Another aim of this study is to illustrate the formal and artistic changes in the way of using autobiographical materials.

Opis:

Lebensbeschreibung an autobiography by appreciated composer Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739–1799) is an intriguing source of knowledge about musical life and the realities for the era for this outstanding artist. Unfortunately, it contains errors in chronology, inconsistencies, and mistakes which influenced all studies concerning Dittersdorf’s music and life. However, the autobiography lacks reliable information, concerning the origins of his father, Paul Ditters, the circumstances of hiring a young violinist for the court orchestra of prince Joseph Friedrich von Hildburghausen, and the chronology of the composer’s trip to Italy in 1763. There is also a lack of biographical details of Wrocław/Breslau bishop Philipp Gotthard von Schaffgotsch, financial matters of Dittersdorf’s activity in Vienna, circumstances of success of the singspiel Doktor und Apotheker, relations with Wrocław music society, and with the court of Friedrich August von Braunschweig in Oleśnica/Oels, the composer’s family circle, and his activity in the field of sacred music. According to a legend, Dittersdorf finished his autobiography two days before his death, but there are indications that he started writing his autobiography a year earlier. The aim of this article is to point out the flaws of Lebensbeschreibung, and to supplement the knowledge about Dittersdorf with verified information from historical records.

Wyłania obraz biografii z wielką historią i polityką w tle, udatnie łączącej życie prywatne i publiczne. Rysuje sposoby syntezy minionych doświadczeń, akcentuje – konstytutywną dla charakteru tej wspomnieniowej narracji – afirmatywną wobec życia postawę autorki.
The article is a thematic and formal analysis of the autobiography of Kira Banasińska (1899-2002) published in 2018 - an artist, but also, among others, an activist of the Polish Red Cross and the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare of the Government of the Republic of Poland in Exile for Polish refugees in India. What emerges is a picture of a biography with great history and politics in the background, successfully combining private and public life. She draws ways of synthesizing past experiences, and emphasizes the author's affirmative attitude towards life, which is constitutive of the nature of this memoir narrative.

Tekst stanowi omówienie wczesnej teorii Sándora Ferencziego, bliskiego ucznia Sigmunda Freuda oraz twórcy węgierskiego ruchu psychoanalitycznego, na przykładzie jego szkicu Homosexualitas Feminina z 1902 roku. Autorka analizuje artykuł lekarza poświęcony przypadkowi Rósy K. (Róberta) i omawia podstawowe cechy języka analityka w okresie poprzedzającym jego współpracę z Sigmundem Freudem. W tekście podjęto również namysł nad gatunkiem opisu przypadku obserwowanym w świetle jego związków z literaturą dokumentu osobistego. W interpretacji przypadku Rósy K. autorka odchodzi od dekonstrukcyjnej hermeneutyki Michela Foucaulta na rzecz przyjęcia postawy afirmatywnej, która pozwala potraktować język psychiatrii jako przestrzeń potencjalnej widzialności pacjentów. Autorka na przykładzie tekstu Ferencziego pokazuje wpływ gatunku biografii i autobiografii na przekształcenia zaszłe w dyskursie psychiatrycznym na przełomie XIX i XX wieku.
This article discusses the early theoretical works of the Hungarian psychoanalyst and a close disciple of Sigmund Freud, Sándor Ferenczi. This study offers an interpretation of his short case study Homosexualitas Feminina, published in 1902, concentrating on the analyst’s narrative and stylistic strategies before he met the founder of psychoanalysis. The article is devoted to the analysis of a popular medical genre – the case study – which is seen in the light of its relation to life-writing literature. Rather than follow Michel Foucault’s deconstructive scheme of interpretation, I offer a more affirmative reading of the case study of Rosa K. and thus seek to understand Ferenczi’s early work through the impact of life-writing genres, such as biography and autobiography, on psychiatric discourse at the turn of the twentieth century.

W niniejszym artykule przedmiotem szczegółowej analizy jest „Nieautoryzowana autobiografia” Kuby Wojewódzkiego. Wnikliwy ogląd zebranego materiału źródłowego pozwolił scharakteryzować ten popularny dziś gatunek oraz wskazać jego rolę w przestrzeni medialnej. W genologicznym opisie uwaga została zwrócona na cztery aspekty wzorca gatunkowego. Zauważone w tym polu prawidłowości bądź odstępstwa od kanonicznego wzorca pogłębiają wiedzę na temat współczesnej autobiografii oraz pozwalają uchwycić to, co wpływa na jej atrakcyjność.
The subject of a detailed analysis presented in this article is the Unauthorized Autobiography of Kuba Wojewódzki. A thorough review of the collected source material enabled the author to characterize this popular genre and indicate its role in a media space. The genological description draws attention to four aspects of the genre pattern. The regularities or deviations from the canonical pattern perceived in this area deepen the knowledge of contemporary autobiography and allows one to capture what makes it attractive.

Tekst prezentuje związek pomiędzy pojęciem „queer” a pierwszoosobową opowieścią u Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. Wychodząc od rozumienia queer jako ruchu w poprzek, zwróconego w stronę wielości, staram się pokazać, czym jest queerowa autobiografia (na przykładzie A Dialoge on Love, 1997), a także umieścić ją w kontekście przeobrażeń teoretycznych w myśli Sedgwick, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem odejścia od krytyki podejrzeń (paranoicznej) w stronę teorii lektury reparacyjnej – wspólnotowej i afirmatywnej. Analogicznie pokazuję, że stawką jest nie tylko lektura, ale również fundamentalne przeobrażenie projektu pisarskiego.
The article presents some connections between Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s concept of queer and her first person academic theory. Beginning from defining queer as a process of being across, I explain what is queer autobiography (by some comments on Sedgwick’s A Dialogue on Love, 1997), and how we can relate this idea to some more theoretical transformations in Sedgwick’s general project. I am especially interesting in going beyond hermeneutics of suspicion toward reparative reading as a practice of rethinking community. The second goal is to adapt this theoretical transformation with Sedgwick’s own writings.

Opis:

The article investigates the relations between historical and autobiographical narratives in India with special attention to the Hindi language. In the early stage of autobiographical studies some Western researchers of the subject, like Gusdorf and Lejeune, emphasized the absence of the autobiography in the Orient. This approach was criticised as ethnocentric by post-colonial, subaltern and feminist scholars thus fostering a new theoretical perspective that led to a re-definition of autobiography, which was from then on perceived not exclusively as a written literary narrative but any narrative of life expressed through a variety of mediums (fine arts, performing arts, music, cinema etc.). In this paper the use of autobiographical narratives as a source for research on historical memory is discussed with focus on certain specific limitations of biographical writings. The autobiography is also explored as an expression of choice for the socially marginalised, in particular the dalits and women.

W 1957 roku podczas obchodów pierwszej dekady powstania Republiki Włoskiej najbardziej eklektyczny pisarz i intelektualista włoskiej sceny kulturalnej XIX wieku, Elio Vittorini, ponownie poruszony „demonem przewidywania”, opublikował swoje Diario in pubblico. Tę wyjątkową książkę, która miesza i jednocześnie łączy w sobie fragmenty esejów z fragmentami dziennika w wielkiej „powieści idei”, należy rozumieć zarówno jako intelektualną autobiografię, jak i aktywne studium wydarzeń społeczno-politycznych i artystycznych, które wpłynęły na Włochy i Europę między latami 20. a 50. XX wieku oraz na osobowość pisarza.
In 1957, while the first tenth anniversary of the proclamation of the Italian Republic was being celebrated, the most eclectic writer and intellectual on the Italian cultural scene of the XIX century, once again stirred by the “demon of anticipation”, published his Diario in pubblico. The singular book, that mixes and combines fragments of essays and extracts from a diary in a great “novel of ideas”, has to be understood both as an intellectual autobiography and as an “active study” of the socio-political and artistic events that affected Italy and Europe from the 1920s to the 1950s and which influenced the personality of the writer.

The Covid-19 crisis has led to a re-definition of our lives and a significant de-stabilization of our mental condition. Research shows that we tend to conceive of challenging realities in terms of war and battle: thus, we have struggled with depression, lower spirits and a lack of human interactions. If so, how can we counteract such depressive tendencies? Although today it seems both writing and reading are efficient in mitigating feelings of loneliness, historical records of the reactions to the Spanish influenza pandemic (1918) reveals that silence and evasion are also possible. Using the method of wide reading, I first examine the divergent responses to crisis. Through close reading, I then explore the manner in which literature may be therapeutic for both writers and readers. Finally, I argue that the literary choices of the reading public, recently re-directed towards auto/biographical fiction, may soon impact on the canon within education. This, in turn, prompts a final hypothesis concerning a generic re-shaping of a future literary canon.

The main purpose of this article is to present the work experience of literary protagonists, who are the representatives of „Tekstylia” generation – people born in the seventies and early eighties, thus the generation, which after years of Polish prosperity in the nineties had to confront brutal capitalist reality at the turn of the XX and XXI century. In my opinion, the work experience of these writers is reflected in plots of their books, where main characters are forced to confront Polish even more brutal capitalist reality at the turn of the XX and XXI century, working as bank assistants, copywriters or tabloid newspaper’s journalists. Corporate enslavement and unfeeling, deprived of empathy managers, constitute main themes of analyzed works, therefore, primarily, I devote my attention to these exact issues.

Tekst jest próbą wskazania wzajemnych zależności pomiędzy dwoma gatunkami literatury dokumentu osobistego – esejem i autobiografią, oraz dwiema kategoriami wewnątrz i ponadgatunkowymi – eseistycznością i autobiograficznością, możliwymi do uchwycenia w Widzeniu bliskim i dalekim Zofii Nałkowskiej. W antologii, składającej się z kilkudziesięciu zróżnicowanych gatunkowo tekstów, można zauważyć nakładanie się na siebie wymienionych cech, powodowane przez nie przekształcenia oraz ich łączenie się z twórczością powieściową i diarystyczną autorki. Zbiór tekstów, obejmujących pół wieku, zawierający zarówno teksty wspomnieniowe, podróżne, recenzje, odczytany z uwzględnieniem perspektywy krytyczno-feministycznej, staje się cennym ogniwem historii polskiej eseistyki kobiet.
The text indicates the relations between two genres of literature of personal document – an essay and autobiography, and two categories within and beyond genres – “essayism” and autobiographical. They can be captured in Widzenie bliskie i dalekie (The vision nearby and distant) written by Zofia Nałkowska. In anthology, where several genre-rich texts were put together, one can notice the superimposing of the above-mentioned features, the transformations they made and their connection with the author’s novels and diaristic writing. The collection of texts covering half a century, encompassing memoirs, travel writings, reviews, read out with regard to the feminist perspective, becomes one of the most valuable item in the history of Polish essay written by women.

This article deals with autobiographical remarks and autobiographies written in medieval England, either by English authors or by authors who came to England (mainly from France), as well as by authors that were born in England but moved (or had to move) abroad (mainly to France). The survey is broad in that it takes not only Old and Middle English texts into account, but also relevant Latin texts. A wide range of material exists, from passages where authors simply mention their name to fully-fledged autobiographies, such as the Book of Margery Kempe, which is often regarded as the first genuine English autobiography. In another respect, my scope is narrower than that of some previous critics (especially Brandl and Misch): autobiographies by clearly fictitious characters such as Beowulf or the speakers in many of the Old English elegies are excluded. However, the borderline between the genuine and the fictitious is not always easy to draw. Therefore, I also briefly discuss the Old English elegy “Deor”, where the speaker mentions his name (Deor), but is nevertheless probably a fictitious character. It is also not always easy to decide where the autobiography describes real events and where the speaker uses or at least seems to use topoi, conventionalized images; but even a conventionalized image can express real events. There are several cases where the speaker describes himself as an old man, who repents the luxurious and sinful life which he led in his youth. Due to these and similar problems, scholars have not been able to identify some authors or characters, even if their names are mentioned. This applies to the Old English poet Cynewulf or to Nicholas of Guildford, who is referred to as a wise man at the end of the Early Middle English poem “Owl and Nightingale.” Chaucer is the only author who describes himself with a bit of clear self-irony – this confirms Chaucer’s exceptional status among the medieval English poets.

In this paper, Sherrill Grace, Findley’s biographer, will examine her biographical practices in the context of Findley’s own memoir, Inside Memory, and his interest in creating fictional auto/biographers and auto/biography in several of his major novels (notably The Wars, Famous Last Words, The Telling of Lies, and The Piano Man’s Daughter). His fictional auto/biographers often use the same categories of document that Findley himself used-journals, diaries, archives-and this reality produces some fascinating challenges for a Findley biographer, not least the difficulty of separating fact from fiction, or, as Mauberley says in Famous Last Words, truth from lies. Like many writers, Findley kept journals all his life, and they are a key source of information for his biographer; however, his way of recording information and his creation of fictional journals means that a biographer (like the readers of his fictional auto/biographers) must tread carefully. While not a theoretical study of auto/biography, in this paper Grace will offer insights into the traps that lie in waiting for a biographer, especially when dealing with a biographee who is as self-conscious an auto/biographer as Findley.

The text is an analysis of interrelations binding autobiographical narration to individual and social identity. The first part tackles the fundamental connection between narration and individual, personal identity of the narrator – Paul Ricoeur, serving as a guide to this fundamental part of the proposed analysis, assumes that the narrative continuum follows and imitates the temporal continuum, constituting a flow in which it becomes possible to inscribe stories modifying and corroborating the reflected course of life. Conceptualizing and bringing to consciousness one’s course of life, auto-narration constitutes both a form of conscientious self-judgement and an occasion for self-deception. In the second part, the author attempts to show how auto narration and its significance for the individual identity changes, when it gets written down in the form of autobiography, subjected to the rigor of the writing and entering in complex interrelationships with social memory and identity. Here the author’s guides are among others Philippe Lejeune, Janet Verner Gunn and Georges Gusdorf. In the third part, the hitherto reconstructed structure of auto-narration and autobiography is destroyed: referring to such authors as Louis A. Renza, Jean Starobinski, John Sturrock, Michel Beaujour and Jacques Derrida, I demonstrate that the autobiographical undertaking is doubtful, and that the optimistic project of saving oneself by means of auto-narration and autobiography is an illusion. The presence of Derrida in the text is scarcely visible; yet it is Derrida, in dialogue with the late Ricoeur, that show us the way out from the autobiographical and identitary trap.

In my article I try to reconstruct what one could call "Nietzsche’s epistemology". I try to show its mythological and metaphorical aspects in affiliation with an autobiographical modus of thinking by which I understand such a way of reflection that places itself in an area of individuality (contrary to generality of a concept). So, on the basis of "Ecce homo" I try to understand Nietzsche's understanding of the phenomenon of being a reader, of beginning, of wisdom. I try to investigate the role of the category of "race" in Nietzsche's thought. How does it affiliate with a conception of the differance? What are its connections with the category of language and (if so) with the writing, too? The conclusion of my article – if there is any – shows a kind of necessity and – at the same time – impossibility of being a reader of Nietzsche's writings which means: being Nietzsche's own autobiographer.

This short working paper is my first attempt to present my concept analysis of relation between the poverty experiences – e.g. childhood suffering by war and migration background, daily life suffering by starvation, abuse, racism etc. – and the process of self-understanding and resilience with the help of an oral history or literature (non-fiction as much as fiction novels). I reflect Wilhelm Dilthey’s opinion about the distinction between autobiography and Self-biography, and I present the Self-biography as a right way to concretize the themes of poverty and exclusion.

The author introduces the fifth issue of "Autobiography" in the context of the seventieth anniversary of the presence of Polish literature in Szczecin. In this framework, he pays a particular attention to the role of poetry of Tymoteusz Karpowicz in describing the post-war Western Pomerania. Karpowicz not only left us his own poems describing Szczecin, but initiated the course of avantgarde presentation of our city.

The article is an attempt at a creative reading (one that employs figures and other works by the discussed writer) of Miriam Akavia’s autobiography entitled My Own Vineyard.... Indicated in the title of the article, the most significant theoretical reference here is Aleksandra Ubertowska’s Holokaust. Auto (tanato) grafie. This article uses the Derridean notion of quasi-genre modified by Ubertowska to interpret an important identity-related work by Akavia, a writer whose formative experience was the Holocaust.
Artykuł jest próbą twórczej lektury (przy wykorzystaniu materiału ikonicznego, a także innych utworów czytanej autorki) autobiografii Miriam Akavii pt. Moja winnica. Najistotniejszym aspektem teoretycznym, zasygnalizowanym w tytule szkicu, pozostaje książka Aleksandry Ubertowskiej Holokaust. Auto (tanato) grafie. Tekst to zastosowanie zmodyfikowanej przez Ubertowską Derridiańskiej kategorii quasi-gatunkowej do interpretacji istotnego dzieła tożsamościowego autorki, której przeżyciem formującym była Zagłada.

The essay is an attempt to read the autobiography of the Jewish philosopher Emil L. Fackenheim (1916–2003), born in Halle exiled to Toronto, settled in Jerusalem, an experienced reader of Hegel. Fackenheim asks Hegel about the significance of the XXth century, seeking in his philosophy clues, if not answers. Above all, he confronts Hegelian dialectics with the reality that he calls the planet of Auschwitz.

W artykule walory metodologiczne studium indywidualnego przypadku i autobiografii zilustrowane zostały przykładami prac badawczych i książkowymi publikacjami pod względem ich potrójnej wartości, jako: świadectwa historii, wyznania prawdy wewnętrznej autorów i jako przesłanie dla potomnych. W studium przypadku chodzi zawsze – jak wykazano na przykładzie „Samotności i kultury” autora i jego uczniów – to wnikliwy opis nietypowego, przełomowego zdarzenia w życiu konkretnej osoby czy grupy ludzi. Głębokie, intymne przeżycia mają zawsze wymiar subiektywny i cenny w ukazaniu prawdy wewnętrznej. Dobór większej próby badawczej pozwala na dokonanie uogólnień. Z analizowanych 13 autobiografii (przywódców i polityków, ludzi sztuki i nauki) wyodrębniono dwie grupy: 1) pisanych na zamówienie (polityczne czy w celu kreowania własnego wizerunku) – dokonujące selekcji niewygodnych faktów i tworzące mity wokół postaci; 2) autobiografie autentyczne: opisujące z dystansu realną rzeczywistość, a także szczere aż do bólu w rozrachunku i ocenie własnego życia, dzięki czemu będące cennym źródłem wiedzy.
In this paper methodological values of case study and autobiography are described by examples of research works and monographs in terms of their triple advantage, as: evidence of history, confession of author’s internal truth and message to posterity. The case study – based on “The solitude and the culture” by author and his students – is an accurate description of an unusual, critical event in someone’s life. Deep, intimate experiences always have their valuable and subjective role in revealing internal truth. Choice of wider research sample enables to make some generalizations. 13 analyzed autobiographies (of leaders and politicians, people of art and science) were divided into two groups: 1) written on demand (political demand or to create someone’s image) – omitting uncomfortable facts and creating myths about the person; 2) authentic autobiographies: describing reality from a distance and absolutely truthful in eva- luation of own life, therefore being a valuable source of knowledge.

The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the literary biography as a possible object of sociological research. This article consists of two parts. In the first one, biography is presented in the perspective of literary communication between the hero and the author of the biography. The hero of biography is trying to give a definite meaning to his life in autobiographical data. The author can accept this meaning, but he or she can also reject it. We argue that between the hero and the author of the biography, there is sometimes an unspoken agreement (moral pact) that obligates the biographer to maintain intimacy, avoid treachery, not to undermine the confidence. In the second part analyzed strategies used by the authors of two biographies (by Andrzej Franszek and Artur Domosławski). These biographies were published almost simultaneously, both are dedicated to outstanding figures of Polish literature and public life. Both of them carry a different approach to the (auto)biographical material. While the first biography is an example of moral pact, the second one – on the contrary – violates it.
Celem tekstu jest zwrócenie uwagi na biografię literacką jako przedmiot badań socjologicznych. Niniejszy artykuł składa się z dwóch powiązanych części. W pierwszej biografia zostaje przedstawiona w perspektywie komunikacji literackiej pomiędzy bohaterem biografii (który stara się nadać swojemu życiu określony sens i interpretację w materiałach autobiograficznych) a autorem, który może zaakceptować tę interpretację, ale może ją również odrzucić. Pomiędzy autorem i bohaterem istnieje niepisana umowa (pakt moralny), zobowiązująca biografa do zachowania intymności, unikania zdrady, niepodważania zaufania, jakim obdarzył go bohater. W drugiej części prześledzono strategie stosowane przez autorów dwóch biografii (Andrzeja Franszaka oraz Artura Domosławskiego). Biografie te zostały opublikowane niemal równolegle, obie poświęcono wybitnym postaciom polskiej literatury i życia publicznego. Obie ukazują odmienny stosunek do materiałów (auto)biograficznych. Podczas gdy jedna biografia jest przykładem dotrzymania paktu moralnego, druga jest przykładem jego naruszenia.

Artykuł poświęcony jest autobiografizmowi w pismach Stefana Żółkiewskiego. Z uwagi na brak autobiografii w sensie ścisłym, autor tekstu decyduje się na analizę materiałów archiwalnych, przedmów i wywiadów, które spełniają warunek paktu autobiograficznego Lejeune’a. Analiza skupia się, w zgodzie z tytułową metaforą, na załamaniach widocznych w materiale, by zwrócić uwagę na warunki, w których pojawia się silna konstrukcja własnego „ja” w tekście. Autor stara się wykazać, że cechą konstytutywną autobiografizmu w pisarstwie Żółkiewskiego jest silne ukontekstowienie w biografiach środowiskowych.
The paper is concentrated on the autobiography in the writings of Stefan Żółkiewski. Due to the lack of classic autobiography, Sidorowicz decides to analyze archival materials, prefaces and interviews that meet the condition of Lejeune’s autobiographical pact. The analysis focuses, in accordance with the title metaphor, on the kinks visible in these texts. in order to draw attention to the conditions under which a strong self-construction appears. The author tries to show that a constitutive feature of Żółkiewski’s autobiographical writing is its strong involvement in society biographies.

In the article the issue of process structures in the autobiography of Alice Salomon and a relation between biographical and collective trajectory. Besides the introductory information on the pioneer of social work in Germany herself and her international career in organizations of women's movement in the article the analysis of process structures in her autobiography is presented together with theoretical inspirations, methodological remarks and data on the text. In contrast to the analysis of autobiographical utterances of Rudolph Hoess enclosed in three articles by M.Czyzewski and A.Rokuszewska-Pawelek, which to some extent constituted the pattern of construction of the plot, the analysis of Alice Salomon autobiography allows to notice the situation when the collective trajectory does not absorb individuals but makes them build their own identity by means of biographical projects despite experiencing suffering associated with the collective trajectory. By the comparison of R.Hoess and A.Salomon autobiographies an attempt was made to emphasize the complexity of the German nation's fate of the Nazi period.

Can erroneous memories be true? What is the foundation of culture – a lasting myth or perhaps the changing everyday life? Is it possible to create a collective autobiography? And if so, what would be the distinctive features of such a genre? The author of the article attempts to answer these questions carrying out a theoretical analysis and an interpretation of Je me souviens (1978) by Georges Perec in the light of Jan Assmann’s categories of communicative memory and cultural memory, applied with regard to the problems of individual vs. collective memory and the types of memory that genuinely connect generations and cultures.
Czy błędne wspomnienia mogą być prawdziwe? Co stanowi fundament kultury – trwały mit, a może zmienna codzienność? Czy można stworzyć autobiografię zbiorową? A jeśli tak, czym taki gatunek miałby się charakteryzować? Między innymi z takimi pytaniami mierzy się autorka artykułu, biorąc na teoretyczny i interpretacyjny warsztat Pamiętam że (1978, przeł. Krzysztof Zabłocki) Georges’a Pereca. Książeczka zbudowana jest z 480 krótkich wspomnień, jednozdaniowych „okruchów codzienności”, błahych drobiazgów sprzed lat i przez lata odpamiętywanych. Ten prosty koncept z pogranicza poetyki i „pracy przypominania” przynosi fascynujące rezultaty; nie tylko buduje alternatywny dla historycznych przekazów obraz powojennej Francji, ale przede wszystkim istotnie oddziałuje na czytelnika – także współczesnego, także polskiego. Zderzenie tego tekstu z kategoriami pamięci komunikatywnej i pamięci kulturowej Jana Assmanna pozwala podjąć refleksję m.in. nad indywidualnością i zbiorowością wspomnień oraz rodzajem pamięci, która rzeczywiście łączy pokolenia i kultury.

Artykuł przybliża historię polskich komiksów autobiograficznych od przełomu mileniów do dnia dzisiejszego. Autor twierdzi, że za pierwszego polskiego twórcę komiksów autobiograficznych należy uznać Wilhelma Sasnala, autora Życia codziennego w Polsce w latach 1999–2001. Następnie zwraca uwagę na olbrzymią rolę Michała „Śledzia” Śledzińskiego i prowadzonego przez niego magazynu „Produkt”, porównując jego rolę do roli undergroundowego twórcy amerykańskiego Roberta Crumba i jego „Zap! Comix”. W kolejnych częściach artykułu przybliżona została twórczość Agaty „Endo” Nowickiej (w kontekście autobiografii kobiecych) i omówiony konkurs na krótki komiks autobiograficzny, organizowany przez Nowicką na łamach „Wysokich Obcasów”, a także prace trzech twórców nurtu autobiograficznego w polskim komiksie – Agaty Wawryniuk, Olgi Wróbel i Daniela Chmielewsiego.
The article presents the history of Polish autobiographical comics, from the turn of the millennia up to the present day. The author points out that Wilhelm Sasnal and his comic book Daily life in Poland in 1999–2001 should be considered the first Polish autobiographical comic book author. Then he draws our attention to the major role of Michał “Śledźu” Śledziński and his magazine “Produkt”, his work is compared to the role of the American underground creator Robert Crumb and his “Zap! Comix”. Next the article tells us more about the work of Agata “Endo” Nowicka (as far as autobiography of women’s comics is considered) and a competition for short autobiographical comic book organized by Nowicka in “Wysokie Obcasy”, as well as comic books of three other authors representing the autobiographical genre: – Agata Wawryniuk, Olga Wrobel and Daniel Chmielewski.

La mémoire occupe une place privilégiée dans l’œuvre de Claude Simon. À travers Les Géorgiques, L ’Acacia et Le Jardin des plantes, notre but, dans le présent article, est de montrer qu’il n’a pas cherché à rédiger une « autofiction » ou un « roman historique », mais à écrire une autobiographie littéraire. Son objectif ultime n’était pas de « retrouver le temps perdu », mais d’inscrire « le temps perdu » dans la littérature. Il résulte de cette étude que la nouvelle forme de l’autobiographie initiée par Claude Simon se démarque entièrement de l’autobiographie classique. Elle est écrite par le recours inlassable de l’écrivain à des stimuli, c’est-à-dire par le questionnement de textes écrits par des personnes, qui se sont trouvées dans des situations similaires. Elle est une auto-sensorio-graphie : l’écriture s’appuie essentiellement sur la description de la sensation et non des faits rapportés. Elle est par ailleurs une auto-thanato-graphie, puisque la mort y est le personnage central.
Memory occupies a privileged place in works of Claude Simon. Through an analysis of Les Georgiques, L ’Acacia and Le Jardin des Plantes, our goal in this article is to show that Claude Simon did not seek to write an “autofiction” or a “historical novel”, but to write a literary autobiography. His ultimate goal was not to “recover lost time”, but to inscribe “lost time” in literature. This study demonstrates that the new form of autobiography initiated by Claude Simon is entirely distinct from a traditional autobiography. It is written by means of the writer’s tireless recourse to stimuli, that is to say by questioning texts written by people who have found themselves in similar situations. It is an auto-sensorio-graphy: the writing is essentially based on a description of sensations, not facts. It is also an auto-thanato-graphy since death is the central character.

Projekt eseistyczny zaproponowany przez Kuncewiczową powiązany jest z rezygnacją z autobiograficzności na rzecz własnej wersji senilnego eseju kobiecego, czyli tekstu migawkowego, antyerudycyjnego, w którym dominuje specyficzna formuła metaforyzmu jako kodowania sensów metafizycznych w ramach opisywania codziennych konkretów.
The article describes the late essays by Maria Kuncewiczowa entitled Przeźrocza (Slides) in the context of the essay regarded through the prism of gender studies and in the context of the relations between essay and autobiography. The essayistic project by Kuncewiczowa is connected with abandoning the autobiographical aspect and choosing her original version of senile feminine essay understood as the sketchy, anty-erudite text, which is dominated by specific formula of metaphorism as encoding the metaphysical senses within the description of quotidian details.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest dialektyka oryginalności i powtarzalności we współczesnych wypowiedziach autograficznych (czyli autobiograficznych w najszerszym, transgatunkowym i transdyskursywnym sensie tego terminu). Ideologia autobiografizmu oparta jest na kulcie jednostkowości i wyjątkowości (w tym samym stopniu życia, co tekstu), jednak jej realizacje odznaczają się dużym nasyceniem powtórzeniami — zarówno w wewnętrznym porządku twórczości danego autora (repetycje postaci, ich typów i wzajemnych relacji, miejsc, sekwencji zdarzeń, motywów tematycznych; autocytaty i autonawiązania), jak i w porządku zewnętrznym (powielanie konwencjonalnych wzorców wypowiedzi, chwytów retorycznych, naśladownictwo struktur tekstowych i schematów egzystencjalnych, nawiązania intertekstualne różnego typu, cytaty z rzeczywistości). Część z tych powtórzeń ma naturę intencjonalną, inne są mimowolne. Ich występowanie leży u podstaw zasadniczego dylematu twórczości autograficznej, uwidocznionego w zestawieniu skrajnych tez: „Wszystko, co nie jest […] autobiografią, jest plagiatem” (C. González-Ruano) oraz „Istnienie jest plagiatem” (E. M. Cioran).
The paper discusses dialectical tension between originality and repeatability in modern and post-modern autography (i.e. autobiography, or self-writing, in the broadest, trans-generic and trans-discursive sense of the term). The ideology of self-writing is based on the cult of individuality and exceptionality of life and text. Nevertheless, its realizations are inevitably marked by repetition and reproduction, both in the inner realm of given authors’s oeuvre (recurring characters and relations between them, reappearing places, events and themes; self-intertextuality) and in the outer contexts (replicating conventional discourse and existential patterns, imitating textual or rhetorical structures, different forms of intertextuality).

Omawia formę gatunkową analizowanej autobiografii, odnajdując w niej cechy sylwiczne. Zwraca uwagę na otwartą kompozycję, chronologię, asocjacyjność, polifonię narracji, znaczenie emocji.
The article contains a discussion of the subject taken in the family autobiography of Bożena Chrząstowska (mother) and Joanna Ciechanowska-Barnuś (daughter) entitled A double voice taken from life (Poznań 2015).The author analyzes selected elements of identity discourse, placing them in the historical and theoretical order. She indicates the main categories: family community, ethos of Greater Poland area, rooting, self-creation. She draws attention to the generational changes of the Polish gentry-intelligentsia culture, reflected also in the family history. She discusses the genre form of the analysed autobiography, finding in it the features of Silva Rerum. The author draws attention to the open composition, chronology, association, polyphony of narration, and the significance of emotions.

Media” oraz innych tekstów zasadniczych dla pisarstwa autobiograficznego, autor proponuje powiązanie tych kategorii za pomocą kategorii toposu, obejmującej w swoim ogólnym, czyli zarówno retorycznym, jak i narratywistycznym (poetologicznym) wymiarze, najważniejsze wątki badań spod znaku poetyki miejsca i intymistyki.
The text presents the relations between urban narratives and autobiographical writing in the context of the post-war and post-Holocaust transformations of the narrative “I”. Basing on the examples from the articles included in the present edition of the „Autobiografia. Literatura. Kultura. Media” journal as well as other crucial autobiographical texts the author proposes to link these issues by means of the notion of “topos” which as both a rhetorical and a literary-theoretical notion embraces all vital aspects of local/urban and autopbiographical studies.

This article focuses on the autobiographical ghost that dwells in “Envois” and the multiple ways he/she/it interferes in Derrida’s concept of écriture. Read through love letters sent as postcards with the image representing Socrates writing in front of Plato, Derrida’s writing, I argue, definitely becomes a cryptic writing (écriture cryptique) both in the sense of kryptô (Gr. coded) and secerno (Lat. set apart). I endeavor to show that “Envois”-largely autobiographical and entangled in his life events-is a harbinger of the secret that Derrida takes for a fundamental feature of democracy in his later works. And yet the secret is of his own, as he notes when writing “Envois”: “Nobody will never know what the secret I write along with is. And that I say this will not change anything” (Peeters 2010: 367).

W artykule prezentuję opracowany oraz zrealizowany przeze mnie program warsztatów pisania autobiografii dla słuchaczy Uniwersytetów Trzeciego Wieku. Na wstępie sygnalizuję aktualny stan potrzeb edukacyjnych różnych grup odbiorców w zakresie oferty kursów kreatywnego pisania w Polsce w porównaniu z krajami anglojęzycznymi. Omawiam założenia programu warsztatów (15 spotkań 1,5 godzinnych, praca w małej grupie, chronologiczny układ zagadnień, cykl rocz- ny, przebieg spotkania składającego się z trzech części: omówienie pracy domo- wej, wykład i dyskusja, zadanie pisemnej pracy na kolejne spotkanie). Wymieniam zastosowane metody (dyskusja, burza mózgów, wykład, praca z tekstem, praca w podgrupach, metoda analogii i przekładu intersemiotycznego). Charakteryzuję cztery grupy wykorzystanych przeze mnie materiałów pomocniczych (teksty lite- rackie, reprodukcje dzieł malarskich, karty pracy, materiały piśmienne). Określam cele założone w zakresie wiedzy, umiejętności oraz postaw społecznych. Wypo- wiedź kończę uwagami praktycznymi dotyczącymi przebiegu warsztatów oraz po- stulatem ubogacenia oferty edukacyjnej w zakresie kursów i warsztatów kreatyw- nego pisania dla osób dorosłych.
In this article I present a workshops program for writing autobiography, designed and carried out by me for the students of Universities of the Third Age. At the outset I indicate the present status of the educational needs of different audiences with regard to the offer of creative writing courses in Poland, in comparison with the English-speaking countries. I discuss the assumptions of the workshop program (15 meetings of 1.5 hour, working in a small group, the chronological arrangement of issues, year cycle; the meeting consists of three parts: checking homework, lecture and discussion, asking students for writing their homework for the next meeting). I enumerate the methods I used (discussion, brainstorming, lecture, working with text, working in subgroups, method of analogy and intersemiotic translation). I describe four groups of auxiliary materials used by me (ego-thematic literary texts, paintings’ reproductions, worksheets, other written historical materials). I define the goals in terms of knowledge, skills and social attitudes. Finally I note some practical comments on the workshop and I postulate for enriching the educational offer with regard to courses and workshops in creative writing for adults.

Pieśń... Kacenelsona – jeden z najbardziej znanych dokumentów literackich czasów Zagłady – powstała w obozie internowania w Vittel, gdzie poeta znalazł się w ramach akcji Hotel Polski. W tej „ostatniej pieśni ostatniego Żyda” Kacenelson łączy swoją osobistą historię z historią całej wspólnoty, składając hołd „zamordowanemu narodowi żydowskiemu”. W niniejszym tekście autorzy skupiają się na mitopoetyckiej stronie utworu: na takiej konstrukcji własnej i narodowej biografii, która pozwala ocalić jakiś sens w sytuacji skrajnie tragicznej i beznadziejnej.
Katsenelson’s Elegy – one of the most famous literary documents of the Shoah – was created in the Vittel internment camp, where the poet had been transported as part of ‘the Hotel Polski affair’. In this “last song of the last Jew” Katsenelson links his personal fate with the fate of the whole community, paying tribute to “the murdered Jewish people”. The authors focus on the mythopoetic aspect of the poem: on its goal – as a personal and national biography – to save the remnants of sense in an absolutely tragic and hopeless situation.

The purpose of this article is to reconstruct the emigration experiences of the main characters in Jozefa Radzymińska’s poem Opowieść o cudzoziemcach and to identify points of contact with the biography of the writer herself, who lived in Argentina for fourteen years after World War II. Radzymińska described the influence of great historical processes on the lives of individuals, she reflected in the work the stages of becoming an emigrant (i.e. shock, suffering, struggling with reality, stabilization), and she referred to her own experiences, which is confirmed in her reminiscence works. Opowieść o cudzoziemcach belongs to a circle of literature that preserves the history of Polish exile. The autobiographical motifs present in the poem, as well as the combination of the individual perspective with the collective experience, allowed the writer to reflect not only the realities faced by Polish emigrants, but above all to draw a portrait of their souls torn by a longing for their homeland.

The main aim of the paper is to make a diagnosis connected with the particular and common (mis)understanding of the relations between death and life, mourning and vitality, melancholy and literature. This objective is accomplished through essay strategies. In texts that are part of Kontener, the suggestive and expressive subject makes continual new inquiries in order to find the essence of their (Bieńczyk’s) personal, and especially textual, identity.

The article discusses the audio form of the biography and autobiography – as seen in the radio- drama and documentary – as a distinct form in audio literature. The article is inspired by the theoretical findings of Philippe Lejeune concerning autobiographical literature and the personal diary genre. Theoretical reflections are complemented by selected examples of artistic audio genres. The examples of radio-dramas and artistic documentaries (features) discussed illustrate the specificity of the radio medium, which, on the one hand, opens up new opportunities for documentaries that are impossible to achieve in printed literature, while, on the other hand, it also imposes restrictions.

This paper considers some of possible implications of emigrants’ visits back home. Alfred Schütz’s seminal paper “The Homecomer” provides a theoretical framework for analysis of autobiographical narrative interviews with young Polish people living in Germany. An attempt is made to explore why and how – typical for the emigration processes – a more critical and objective image of country of origin and a growing feeling of strangeness at home deepens emigrants’ capacity for reflection on their life and identity. Consequently, most of them painfully realise that they will never fully assimilate with the country of immigration and they no longer find themselves comfortable in their country of origin. This has crucial implications for their biography. The collected empirical data show that some of emigrants plan to immediately return to Poland in order to save their emotional relationship with those back home. Others find their homeland poorer and less prospective in comparison to Germany. This legitimate their residence abroad. And finally, the negative homecoming experience can perform a very important function in the narrators’ common-sense argumentation, i.e., this should reduce psychological and biographical costs of their emigration career

The article Memories sung in words — singers' autobiographies aims at identifying main topics and patterns present in autobiographical writings of classical singers. Discovering of vocal talent and musicality, desire to become a singer, role of voice teachers and men-tors (conductors, stage directors etc.), highlights of the career, fears and failures, vocal crises, dealing with criticism and negative judgements, daily routines aimed on vocal fitness, balancing private and professional life, cultural and historical background — all these aspects are discussed here on two remarkable examples: ... und ich wäre so gern Primadonna gewesen. Erinnerungen (Berlin 1994, English: In My Own Voice. Memoirs. New York 2009) by Christa Ludwig, one of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of postwar opera, and Zeit eines Lebens. Auf Fährtensuche (Stuttgart 2000) by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, one of the most famous Lieder performers, often called in Germany ‘the voice of the 20th cen-tury’. Verbalizing the universe of their artistic and life experience they both express the essence of being a classical singer: ‘The singing profession is slavery! It only looks easy and enviable from the outside. You are showered with bravas and blossoms [...], but from the beginning the sword of Damocles always hangs over your head. After a certain age you no longer have the ease, and your voice is no longer as radiant. Indeed, you must stop singing just at the time when you finally know what singing is all about’ (Christa Ludwig, In My Own Voice. Memoirs).

The author of the sketch reads the Diary as a work behind the origin of which there is a sense of disappearance of life in the passing time, typical for Mieczysław Jastrun. In the context, the diary – filled, among others, with a register of small, everyday activities – seems to be a record through which Jastrun attempts to defy the nothingness and preserve his individual existence. The recording of everyday life is, however, not enough to fulfill this task on its own. Formulating remarks on Jastrun’s attempts to record his own existence and consciousness, the author references a text by Georges Gusdorf, in which the French philosopher discusses the goals and assumptions of autobiography, such as: creation of a coherent outline of one’s fortunes, interpretation and understanding of events and experiences of life, discovery of the truth of one’s own personality. Smuga światła [Streak of Light] is surely such a record. The uniqueness of individual consciousness is, however, expressed most fully in Jastrun’s metaphorical images, found not  only in his poetry but also in the Diary and the Streak of Light. The author of the sketch, referencing and juxtaposing specific fragments of Jastrun’s poems, autobiography and diary, reads the meanings and connotations of one of these images – a beautiful woman entering a house – simultaneously showing the coherence of the subject’s  imagination and sensitivity. Tracking of these distinctive images in the poet’s works and decyphering of their meanings resembles exploration of a “self” having a specific identity included in the texts. These images encompass an interpretation of the subject’s existence, express its distinctive metaphysical convictions, whereas their repeatability and permanency constitute the subject’s identity, preserving its existence in the volatile time.

W artykule podjęto próbę ukazania wpływów, jakie na literaturę popularną wywiera doświadczenie autobiograficzne. Ze względu na niezwykle szeroki zakres obszaru badawczego, niemożliwa jest kompleksowa, gatunkowa analiza zjawiska. Przykładem, mającym nakreślić tendencje występujące w literaturze popularnej, jest twórczość Joanny Chmielewskiej – proza z pogranicza gatunków. W artykule poruszono zagadnienia takie jak autokreacja autorki, inspiracje historią rodzinną, związki z teorią autobiografizmu kobiecego i zabiegi autoterapeutyczne. Podjęto próbę zdiagnozowania przyczyny zastosowania niedopowiedzeń przy jednoczesnych deklaracjach o ekshibicjonistycznej szczerości pisarki. Autorka zastanawia się, jakie znaczenie ma dla czytelnika wprowadzenie do literatury popularnej wątków autobiograficznych i co wynika z balansowania na pograniczu prawdy i fikcji w tym gatunku.
The article is an attempt to illustrate the influence of autobiographical experience on modern popular literature. Due to the wide scope of the field of study, the complete analysis of the phenomenon within the genre is impossible. An example illustrating this tendency in popular literature are novels written by Joanna Chmielewska – one of the most popular crime fiction writers in Poland and countries of the former Soviet Union. The main reason why Chmielewska’s works can serve as an exemplification of popular literature is that her crime stories are, in fact, novels between genres. The article touches upon issues such as self-creation, inspiration by family history, correlations with woman’s autobiography theory and auto-therapeutic treatments. The author tries to diagnose the reason for the use of understatements, which are used in conjunction with declarations of exhibitional honesty of the writer. The author considers the meaning of the introduction of autobiographical experience into popular literature to the reader and what is the outcome of balancing in-between truth and fiction in this field.

Researchers agree that Mystical Autobiography of Marianna Marchocka, written at the end of the 1640’s and published in 1939 by Karol Górski, is an extraordinary phenomenon in 17th-century Polish literature, especially in Polish mystical literature. The Autobiography, compared with such works as the Autobiography of Teresa of Ávila, testifies to spiritual development of the Carmelite, provides a psychological study and a thorough record of female body experience. Despite the negativistic attitude of the nun to her body, as emphasized by researchers, both spirit and body were engaged in the mystical experiences of Marianna Marchocka – the body was involved in the experience of union with Jesus Christ. This article is an attempt to analyze spiritual and bodily signs of the Carmelite’s experience of a mystical relationship with God. Knowledge of the author’s personality and her attitude to her work, just like the analysis of mystical elation described in the Autobiography (paying special attention to the nun’s psyche and spirituality, and extraordinary bodily experience accompanying ecstasy) would not be possible without examining the genesis of the work, the importance that Marchocka attached to the act of writing itself and the author’s writing skills. What is of interest here is not only the bond between the Carmelite’s physicality and spirituality and her inner experiences and relationship with God, but also the literary expression of her attitude to her psyche and body.

Książka Andrzeja Pitrusa Przebłyski piękna. Spotkania z Jonasem Mekasem (2022) to pierwsza w języku polskim monografia dorobku artysty. Stanowi rodzaj przewodnika po twórczości, mającego zachęcić do „zanurzenia się” w filmy twórcy i odnalezienia w nich własnych sensów. Podstawowym założeniem Pitrusa jest odczytanie kina Mekasa przez siebie samego. Autor poszukuje analogii pomiędzy własnymi doświadczeniami a biografią artysty i sięga do swoich wspomnień, które służą mu do „wczucia się” w świat filmowca. Forma książki została oparta na dialogu ze słowami Mekasa. Jej pierwszą część stanowi przybliżenie dorobku filmowego litewskiego twórcy – od wczesnych, mniej znanych realizacji, przez najbardziej emblematyczne dzieła, po późne prace wideo, instalacje artystyczne i projekty internetowe. Na drugą składa się wybór pism filmowca: dzienników, tekstów krytycznych, wywiadów i wierszy, które poszerzają rozważania Pitrusa i korespondują z nimi.
Andrzej Pitrus’s book Przebłyski piękna. Spotkania z Jonasem Mekasem [Glimpses of Beauty: Encounters with Jonas Mekas] (2022) is the first Polish monograph of the Lithuanian filmmaker’s output. It is a guide to the artist’s work, intended to encourage the readers to ‘immerse’ themselves in his films and engage subjectively in searching for their meanings. Pitrus’s basic premise is to read Mekas’s cinema through himself. He seeks parallels between their experiences and refers to his own memories, which he uses to ‘get a feel’ for the filmmaker’s world. The form of the book is based on a dialogue with Mekas’s words. Its first part is Pitrus’s study of the artist’s film output, from his first and less-known films, through the most emblematic works, to late films created on video, art installations, and internet projects. The second part is a selection of the filmmaker’s writings – diaries, critical texts, interviews, and poems – that correspond to and extend Pitrus’s interpretations.

This thorough review discusses in detail a book by Artur Hellich Gry z autobiografią: przemilczenia, intelektualizacje, parodie [Playing Games with Autobiography: Concealing, Intellectualizing, Mocking]. Together with Hellich, the author inspects the reasons for distrust of the eponymous genre during the People’s Republic of Poland’s period, and traces the transmutations thereof instigated by the writers. Strategies deployed in selected literary works by K. Brandys, S. Lem, R. Zimand, A. Sandauer, P. Roth, and P. Feyerabend, described as a crypto-autobiography, selfmythologizing, and autothematic picaresque novel. Jewish descent, in the case of majority of mentioned authors, was a factor prompting the titular games with the confessional genre. Aside from giving justice to Hellich’s novel discoveries and compelling interpretations, the review’s author also enters into dialogue with him concerning the understanding of broadly understood autobiographical writing.

The medallions devoted to Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Ribera are a major collection of texts within Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s entire output. Through them, he proved that he was able to write a moving text about painting while avoiding both the academic tone and flaunting his knowledge, as well as the dangers of ekphrasis transforming too often into irksome detailed inventories of the elements of a painter’s presentation. The decision to refer to these texts as medallions was equally a genological concept and a clever hedge, and a starting point for a discussion on the ambiguity of the very notion of a medallion. Herling-Grudziński would not have been himself if he had abandoned autobiographical reflections. When considering artists and their works ‘from aside’, he multiplied assumptions, proposed apocryphal versions of some biographical threads, and formulated bold unverifiable hypotheses – this was because he sided with a literary story, not an academic discourse.

The article discusses the psychoanalytical interpretation of Leśmian’s fairy tale The adventures of Sindbad Sailor by Bogusław Grodzki. Following Freud’s and Bettelheim’s concepts, it claims that Sindbad’s psychosexual development and his relations with the princesses reflect Leśmian’s phantasms – the poet’s erotic/sexual desires. In Grodzki’s work fiction seems to be an autobiographical tale and verbal psychotherapy. Misiak, on the other hand, presents the sex/gender categories and introduces the distinction between the autobiography and autofiction as well as certain poststructural and feminist categories.

Misery literature is frequently perceived as a new genre, which emerged in the United States in the 1990s. It is usually defined as autobiographical non-fiction dealing with a traumatic childhood and life’s adversities yet many of most famous misery memoirs have been discredited as fakes. Nevertheless, many traits of the genre features have long existed in the history of literature. This article seeks to analyse the roots of misery memoirs, present their characteristic plot structure, explain their commercial popularity and warn of the dangers they might entail.

Artykuł jest analizą tekstów wspomnieniowych Piotra Zaremby – urbanisty, pisarza, pierwszego prezydenta polskiego Szczecina w latach 1945–1950. Zaremba, jako architekt i polityk, nie tylko miał wpływ na odbudowę miasta po wojnie, ale także przyczynił się do kształtowania tożsamości mieszkańców. Działalność Zaremby – polityczna i pamiętnikarska – miała przy tym wymiar europejski: był poliglotą i sprawnym dyplomatą, który często podróżował po Starym Kontynencie.
The article analyses the memoires of Piotr Zaremba – an urbanist, a writer, the first president of the Polish Szczecin in 1945–1950. Being both an architect and a politician, Zaremba not only had an impact on the reconstruction of the city after the war, but also contributed to shaping the identity of the city residents. Zaremba's activity – political and memoirist one – was of European dimension: he was a polyglot and an efficient diplomat who often travelled the Old Continent.

Tematem tekstu są krótkie filmy Wojciecha Hasa, przede wszystkim, takie jak Harmonia (1947), Moje miasto (1950) i poszukiwanie w nich śladów (auto)biografizmu. Celem było pokazanie ich potencjału semantycznego, zwrócenie uwagi na bogactwo możliwych interpretacji. Tylko postawa badawczej otwartości pozwala uniknąć ciężaru wszelkich fundamentalizmów, pewników, całościowych ujęć. Perspektywa edukacyjna ujawniała się w aktualizacji narzędzi badawczych z zakresu tematologii i hermeneutyki.
The paper describes short films made by Wojciech Has, for example Harmonia (1947), Moje Miasto (1950), and searches for traces of (auto)biography in them. The purpose was to show their semantic potential and to draw attention to the richness of possible interpretations. Only an attitude of scientific openness enables the avoidance of the burden of all fundamentalisms, certainties, and holistic approaches. The educational perspective was revealed in the update of research tools related to hermeneutics and thematic perspective.

Artykuł dotyczy niedokończonej książki Zofii Nałkowskiej poświęconej ojcu, Wacławowi Nałkowskiemu. Rozpoczyna się od wspomnienia jego ostatnich chwil, umieszczonych w kontekście innych podobnych wspomnień zanotowanych przez pisarki feministyczne (Nancy K. Miller, Grażynę Borkowską, Ingę Iwasiów, Ericę Jong i Susan Faludi). Następnie jest mowa o samej relacji Nałkowskiej z ojcem. Później zaś – o metodzie pracy nad książką, czego efektem był szereg artykułów. Materiały do książki o ojcu, publikowane na łamach prasy, są interesującymi tekstami ze względu na swoją przynależność gatunkową. Przede wszystkim stanowią biografię, ale też – autobiografię. Ich różnorodność zbliża je do gatunków sylwicznych, a także – do eseju.
The article concerns Zofia Nałkowska’s book that had been never finished and is dedicated to her father Wacław Nałkowski. It starts with the memory of his last living moments which are placed in the context of other similar memories noted by feminist writers (Nancy K. Miller, Grażyna Borkowska, Inga Iwasiów, Erica Jong and Susan Faludi). Next I mention about the relationship between Nałkowska and her father. And followingly – about the method of working on the book effected in several articles. Contents of the book about the father publicated in press are interesting texts due to text categorization. Most of all they constitute biography, but also autobiography. The textual diversity makes them closer to silva rerum and essay too.
