    The paper presents the program TRISTAN 2.1 (Tree−RIngs STANdardization) dedicated to standardization of the dendrochronological sequences written in one of the most often used formats: Tucson Raw Data, ITRDB Site Chronology, TRRAD, TRMEAS as well as text ones. The program enables the choice of the optimal form of the trend function out of ten different variants and also offers the opportunity of calculating the basic statistical parameters and spectral characteristics.

    Opis:
    The study focused primarily on the analysis of the periodic annual and mean annual increment and on the recognition of the growth phases for beech growing in the lower storey of beech−pine stands. The empirical material collected from 12 beech−pine stands located in the territory of the Miłomłyn and Stare Jabłonki Forest Districts was used for the study. The height increment of the beech trees from the second storey of beech−pine stands under study culminated earlier than the height increment of the beech trees from pure, one−storied stands. The beech trees growing in the second storey are also characterised by a shorter juvenile phase.

    Opis:
    The indicators of the possibilities of timber harvesting in the State Forests in Poland arouse doubts. The timber volume increment values determined in recent years show gross errors. A proposal of different interpretation of some indicators (harvest/resources ratio, age class structure, assessment of destabilisation of stands, reduction of maturity age of stands is presented. The large−scale inventory of forest resources may provide reliable data on the status of forest resources and the possibilities of their utilisation.

    Oceniono wpływ emisji przemysłowych na wybrane parametry (wielkość pierśnicy oraz przyrostów rocznych) drzew rosnących w pobliżu emitorów. Powierzchnie badawcze rozmieszczono w różnych odległościach od źródeł zanieczyszczeń, jakimi są huta cynku i ołowiu w Miasteczku Śląskim oraz huta stali w Dąbrowie Górniczej (dawna Huta Katowice). Wielkość przyrostów rocznych P. sylvestris oraz zawartość metali ciężkich (Zn, Cd., Pb) w drewnie mierzono w przedziałach pięcioletnich. Szerokość przyrostów rocznych drzew jest determinowana przez różne czynniki ekologiczne (m.in. klimatyczne, siedliskowe), ale również przez zanieczyszczenie atmosfery. Zaobserwowano zmniejszony przyrost roczny drzew rosnących na badanych terenach jak również zwiększoną zawartość metali ciężkich w drewnie w pierwszych latach po rozpoczęciu działalności zakładów przemysłowych.
    The impact of industrial emissions on selected parameters of wood from Scots pine was assessed. Samples of wood from Scots pine which ran along a gradient of industrial pollution were investigated in the South of Poland. These sites located are at various distances from a zinc and lead smelter (Miasteczko Śląskie) and steelworks (Dąbrowa Górnicza). Samples were taken from two polluted zones and from a control zone. The relative size of the increment and heavy metal content were measured in a wood sample from Scots pine over 5-year periods covering a 25-year period of activity of industrial plants mentioned according to the method presented by Nabais et al. [1999], The analyses of heavy metal content in wood were made using the conventional AAS method [Ostrowska et al. 1991]. Annual ring widths of forest trees are affected by different ecological factors (climate, soil,) and also air pollution. In the investigated tree areas with an intensive air pollution the annual ring width reductions are observed. The heavy metal concentration was increased in the first years of the activity of industrial plants. However some studies present a positive correlation between radial distributions of heavy metals in tree rings and temporal records of pollution from industry and others fail in using dendroanalysis as a chronological record of pollution [Hagemeyer, Schäfer 1995]. It should be noted that the conclusions presented here are based on a relatively small amount of data. Thus the interpretation of obtained results needs to be confirmed by further investigations.

    The paper describes the changes in the current annual volume increment of fir stands in the Forest Experimental Station in Krynica in 1971−2011. The research material are the results of five−fold measurements of stands on 238 control sample plots using an inventory and control method based on the statistical and mathematical system. On average, current annual volume increment in the 1970s amounted to 6.10 m³/ha/year, while in the 1980s to 8.46 m³/ha/year, in 1990s to 10.52 m³/ha/year and to 13.42 m³/ha/year in the last decade (2001−2011).

    The paper is the analysis of annual height increments in three−year−old silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) seedlings planted under the canopies of Norway spruce, common beech, Scots pine, European larch and common birch stands in the Karkonosze National Park. The objective of the research was to define the time span after which seedlings of silver fir (Abies alba Mill,) adapted to light conditions under the crowns of different tree species. The comparison of annual height increments of seedlings and the analysis of variance of light conditions permitted to preliminary assess the effect of individual species forming the canopy on the height response of regeneration.

    Opis:
    Amount of dry biomass and its annual production of stands of Ojcowski National Park were determined for 1990−2003 period. Carbon dioxide sequestration was estimated for the mentioned period as well. Forests of Ojcowski National are biomass abundant stands with a quite high annual production. Mean stand biomass amounts to 218.6 t/ha in the year 1990 and 275.7 t/ha in the year 2003, with a mean annual increment amounting to 8.7 t/ha/year. Carbon dioxide sequestration for the Park area was estimated to 12.9 t CO2/ha/year.
