Opis:
The article focuses on the analysis of women’s and men’s clothing appearances in the pre-bo-urgeois ambience of Kersnik’s novels. Particular clothing items and clothing appearances indicate the presence of specifi c spiritual and social characteristics, typical for the cultural and historical environment in which the two literary works were created. The methodological approach of the analysis in terms of theory is based on general semiotic theory (Eco, Lotman), cultural semiotics (Barthes), literary theory and literary history, Lotman’s symbol theory, clothing culture, discourse analysis and Bourdieu’s theory of habitus. The article discusses separately the clothing appearan-ces of male and female characters. The descriptions of clothing appearances reveal the socio-histo-rical background of the literary works as well as many other abstract categories such as characters’ mental states, their ideologies, political beliefs, positive and negative character attributes as well as their moral virtues and vices. Clothes as part of the pre-bourgeois habitus try to establish a balance between the urban and the rural, between prestige and humility, between refi nement and coar-seness. Irony is often a result of the contrast between the physical determinants and the associate variable, i.e. the clothing. The author uses a range of various clothing appearances to characterize and mock different classes of people; the trivial conversations about fashion denote the banality of social life; the differences between the “true” bourgeoisie and those who strive to reach and fi t into that social class are already strongly indicated in the descriptions of their external appearances.

Opis:
The article discusses the correlation of ambience in Ray Bradbury’s science fiction short story Zero Hour and the paintings by a well-known Belgian Surrealist René Magritte. It specifies first the influences of Scuola Metaphysica on creating the specific poignant atmosphere visible in the works of the painter and then focuses on pointing out similar notions in the short story by Bradbury. Next, the article analyses the techniques, employed by both the artist and the writer, that help to create the above-mentioned mood. The focus is predominantly on Bradbury’s narrative where the linguistic level as well as the visual one are considered and then the analysis follows in relation to such mechanisms as contrast, juxtaposition, non sequitur or dépaysement.

Opis:
Objectives: In Pakistan, the reports on benzene exposure among workers in chemical industries are almost non-existing due to limited research work in the field of exposure science. This study aimed to investigate such exposure in a widely adopted occupation in Rawalpindi city. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 60 blood samples (N = 20/group) of mechanics (MCs), spray painters (PNs) and control participants (CN) were analyzed. The socio-economic and demographic information of workers and that of workplaces was documented using a short questionnaire. Results: We identified that the workers in spray-painting occupation are highly at risk of benzene exposure. The results showed that PNs were more at risk of exposure to benzene than MCs, and this exposure was significantly correlated with long working hours (r = 0.68, p < 0.001). Moreover, there are several limitations in workplace setups, which need to be addressed in order to mitigate workers health risk in this occupation. In addition to the reckless use of chemicals, other identified predictors of exposure included active and passive smoking, poor workplace hygiene and substandard ventilation. Conclusions: To mitigate workplace exposure, it is necessary to reduce working hours and encourage regular use of self-protective equipments and adoption of proper hygiene in chemical workplaces.

Opis:
This paper focuses on unravelling the impact of atmospherics on shopper purchase behaviour in emerging markets like Nigeria and attempts to isolate the atmospheric cue that is the most signifi cant predictor of shopper purchase decisions. The paper seeks to establish a correlation between the design, ambient and social cues in big shopping malls and buyer purchase behaviour. A quantitative and deductive approach is adopted. Data collection is through a survey, and the principal research instrument is the questionnaire. Results reveal that retail atmospherics exert some signifi cant infl uence on shopper purchase behaviour. Empirical analysis indicates that retail atmospherics account for 34% of shopper purchase behaviour and that design cues are the most significant predictor of shopper purchase decision followed by ambient cues. Social cues do not exert any infl uence on purchase decisions. A ‘moderation’ and ‘mediation’ analysis revealed that though design and ambient cues infl uence purchase decisions independently, the interaction effect on each other is not signifi cant. Consequently, there is a need to understand why social factors do not play a role in purchase behaviour. More importantly, there is the need to identify and understand other factors that account for the balance of 66% in shoppers’ buying behaviour. Such a study might focus on factors such as pricing, sales promotion, loyalty programmes and other psycho-social factors which may work as key influencers in customers purchase decisions. For practical purposes, the focus should be on the design and ambient cues in the conceptualisation, development, and management of large retail stores.
