Multimedia stream processing into two cooperative different systems (cluster platform and virtual lab) is considered. The considered selected information about the system is presented and the idea of its communication when executing the distributed application is proposed. In this paper we present a genetic algorithm (GA) for creating hypothetical virtual portraits of historical figures and other individuals whose facial appearance is unknown. Our algorithm uses existing portraits of random people from a specific historical period and social background to evolve a set of face images potentially resembling the person whose image is to be found. We then use portraits of the person’s relatives to judge which of the evolved images are most likely to resemble his/her actual appearance. Unlike typical GAs, our algorithm uses a new supervised form of fitness function which itself is affected by the evolution process. Additional description of requested facial features can be provided to further influence the final solution (i.e. the virtual portrait). We present an example of a virtual portrait created by our algorithm. Finally, the performance of a parallel implementation developed for the KASKADA platform is presented and evaluated.

The aim of the present study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of simvastatin (SIM) administered orally in 6-week-old turkeys at a single dose of 2 mg/kg b.w. The SIM concentrations in plasma were determined by validated HPLC-MS/MS method. Mean (± SD; n = 10) values of pharmacokinetic parameters evaluated were as follows: Cmax = 0.49 ± 0.21 ng/ml, tmax = 1.6 ± 1.1 h, AUC(0-∞) = 1.08 ± 0.57 h×ng/ml, t1/2kel = 2.14 ± 1.3 h and MRT = 3.08 ± 1.52 h. The results indicate that the SIM is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract of turkeys; however, achieved plasma level is lower compared to those observed in mammals.

The present study describes the distribution of CD4+CD8+ double-positive (DP) T cells in various immune compartments of mice with ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic asthma. It was found that the absolute number of DP T cells was considerably increased in the mediastinal lymph nodes and lungs of asthmatic mice as compared with that determined in the healthy subjects. On the contrary, the absolute counts of DP T cells was significantly decreased in the head and neck lymph nodes, and in peripheral blood of OVA-immunized mice. These results suggest that DP T cells may be involved in the pathogenesis of allergic asthma.

The aim of this paper is to investigate thermodynamic efficiency of hierarchical thermodynamic cycles under partial loads by using of exergy analysis. Advanced hierarchical cycles are composed of few energy conversion systems, which can be powered by several different sources of energy jointly. This kind of cooperation gives opportunities to provide high efficient and clean conversion of fossil fuels to electricity. Moreover, power plant consisting of few traditional power system gives new possibilities of optimization under partial loads.

It is known that nano- and micromechanics require new approaches to right describing of surface-like phenomena which lead to an enhanced energy conversion. In this work, a general form of surface forces that consist of a contribution from both the friction and mobility components has been extended to collect the effects of bulk and surface motion of a fluid. Quite similar impact can be observed for a solid-fluid mixture, where the principle of effective stress for this new type of approach should be considered from the very beginning. The second motivation of our work is to present the multiscale domain of fluid-solid interaction which describes some “emergence effects” for materials with especially high volumetric surface densities.

As death returned to make its mark on the world with the COVID-19 pandemic and, consequently, resurfaced in the social imaginary, we have found ourselves once again full-throatedly asking questions about what it means to die well. These issues lie at the heart of W;t, an American play penned in the early 1990s by Margaret Edson, which could be situated alongside other fictional and true stories that “provide social scripts for dying” (Knox). The play might also be viewed as a modern reference to the medieval tradition of ars bene moriendi and the morality plays linked with that tradition in a symbiotic, synergistic manner. The essay attempts to demonstrate that the meaning underlying Edson’s play (and its television adaptation of 2001) derives primarily from its grappling with the subject of human’s agency in the face of the inevitable. In its close reading of the play, the essay moves between the text, first published in print in 1999, and the screen, to best tap into the interpretive potential of comparing the drama and its film adaptation.

Opis:
The conversion of a waste heat energy to electricity is now becoming one of the key points to improve the energy efficiency in a process engineering. However, large losses of a low-temperature thermal energy are also present in power engineering. One of such sources of waste heat in power plants are exhaust gases at the outlet of boilers. Through usage of a waste heat regeneration system it is possible to attain a heat rate of approximately 200 MWth, under about 90°C, for a supercritical power block of 900 MWel fuelled by a lignite. In the article, we propose to use the waste heat to improve thermal efficiency of the Szewalski binary vapour cycle. The Szewalski binary vapour cycle provides steam as the working fluid in a high temperature part of the cycle, while another fluid – organic working fluid – as the working substance substituting conventional steam over the temperature range represented by the low pressure steam expansion. In order to define in detail the efficiency of energy conversion at various stages of the proposed cycle the exergy analysis was performed. The steam cycle for reference conditions, the Szewalski binary vapour cycle as well as the Szewalski hierarchic vapour cycle cooperating with a system of waste heat recovery have been comprised.

The aim of the paper is to investigate the effectiveness of the 18K380 steam turbine condenser air extraction system using hydro ejectors. Motivation for the analysis was a need of improvement of the energy conversion ratio of the power plant. To achieve this goal it was necessary to establish efficiency of each subsystem of the energy cycle. The air extraction system is not a highly power consuming system but it has great impact on the steam cycle efficiency by influence on the condensation temperature. The air extraction system effectiveness depends on a weather conditions, exactly on the ambient temperature, which raises the question whether it is worth to modernize the hydro ejectors or replace them by a centrifugal vacuum pumps. To establish the vacuum system effectiveness a new innovative mass flow measuring system has been implemented to measure an air-steam mixture flow and the fraction of the air mass in the mixture. The measuring system is based on a Venturi nozzle supplemented with a temperature drop during the mixture expansion.
