Opis:
New optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages show that sandy deposits overlain by Late Weichselian subglacial till in central Latvia are of Early to Middle Weichselian age. The finer chronological resolution of unconsolidated sediment deposition in the Central Latvian Lowland (CLL) remains relatively unstudied, and here we provide a first characterisation of the deposits with respect to their age. Three OSL ages ranging between 84 ± 9 ka and 112 ± 11 ka suggest that the deposits studied in the CLL are of Early Weichselian age (MIS 5). We found no Middle Weichselian deposits in the CLL, and assume that any such younger sediments might have been eroded during the advance of the Zemgale Lobe in the Late Weichselian. One site, in the ice-marginal zone adjacent to the interlobate area, has nevertheless deposits dated to 44 ± 10 ka corresponding to the Middle Weichselian (MIS 3). Our results are compatible with existing ESR ages on three sets of Portlandia arctica shells from the central part of the lowland; the shells had been incorporated into glacial deposits during later glacial advances. Finally, our findings largely support ice-free conditions during the Early and Middle Weichselian in the middle and southern part of central Latvia.

Southern part of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet terminated in large lobes projecting tens of kilometres beyond the main ice sheet margin. One of the main ice lobe was the Odra lobe localized in NE Germany and NW Poland. In this study concise description of current morphology of the Odra lobe area is given with special reference to subglacial hydraulic conditions during the ice sheet advance. Subglacial conditions were simulated by using time-dependant three-dimensional numerical model, and obtained results were compared to geological observations. The results show entire groundwater system alternation that affected the ice/bed coupling and influenced formation of specific subglacial landforms. Coupling the simulation results with empirical estimates of basal melting rate suggests that only a small fraction of basal meltwater could have drained to the ice forefield as groundwater. Adverse slope of the low-permeable ice bed hampered water drainage, and led to water accumulation at the ice/bed interface that in turn facilitated basal sliding and bed deformation.

Opis:
Palynological analysis of core Butovka obtained from the Protva River basin 80 km south-west of Moscow (55 stopni10'N, 36 stopni 25'E) provides a record of vegetation and climate change in the central Russian Plain spanning the Last Interglacial and the beginning of the following glacial epoch. Pollen profiles of the Mikulino (Eemian) Interglaciation in the Central Russian Plain show a distinctive pattern of the vegetation changes, reflecting an increase in temperatures towards the optimum phase of the interglaciation followed by a gradual cooling. Rapid climatic deterioration, manifesting an onset of the Valdai (Weichselian) Glaciation, took place after a slower cooling accompanied by increasing humidity of climate during the post-optimum part of the Mikulino Interglaciation. The interglacial/glacial transition had a complex structure, being marked by a sequence of secondary climatic oscillations of varying magnitude. A decreasing role of mesophilic plants and an increase in abundance and diversity of the xerophytes and plants growing at present in the regions with highly continental climate in the Butovka pollen record suggests that during the Early Valdai the climate grew both more continental and arid. With this tendency at the background, two intervals of climatic amelioration can be distinguished. Both of them are marked by the development of the open forest communities similar to the contemporary northern taiga of West Siberia. The latter of the two warm intervals had a larger magnitude of temperature changes than the first one, as indicated by a greater landscape role of dark-coniferous trees (Picea + Abies + Pinus sibirica). Based on its stratigraphic position and inferred features of climate and vegetation, the latter of the two warm intervals identified in the Butovka pollen profile can be correlated with the Upper Volga Interstade in the Russian Plain, or the Brőrup Interstade in West Europe. We can also tentatively correlate it with warm DO event 23 as reflected in the oxygen isotope record from the Northern Greenland deep ice-core (North GRIP Members, 2004). A slighter and shorter warming within the first cold stage of the Early Valdai probably had an interphasial rank and corresponded to a shorter DO event 24 in the NorthGRIP oxygen-isotope curve.

Opis:
A lithological and palaeomagnetic analysis of Late Weichselian glaciolacustrine deposits from two ancient periglacial lakes was carried out in the valley of the Shuja (S Karelia) and Ust-Pjalka (S-E Kola Peninsula) rivers, NW Russia. The rhythmic structure of the varved clays is interpreted as turbiditic with systematic differences between the proximal and distal areas of accumulation. In the proximal area the textural and structural properties of the deposits towards both distal and (partly) lateral directions are described. It is shown that the proximal varve successions are incomplete while distally they are continuous. The accumulation of one varve (DE rhythm, second order cycle) during one year is consistent with palaeomagnetic data. Significant differences in magnetic parameters and in the palaeomagnetic "records" of declination-inclination between proximal and distal varves are established. Analysis of palaeomagnetic properties was combined with lithological analysis in all sections. Locally, the varved clays in the proximal area could be used for palaeomagnetic research. Taking into account the erosion of underlying deposits by turbidity currents and inclination shallowing, these sediments could not precisely record palaeosecular variation (PSV). The distal varved clays (represented by the DE rhythms) are clearly most useful both for varve-clay chronology and PSV recovery. The palaeomagnetic declination and inclination records are correlated with chrono- and magnetostratigraphy scheme of NW Russia. This paper also examines lithology-dependent "inclination error" and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility in glaciolacustrine sediments.

Opis:
The development of the Weichselian Upper Pleniglacial periglacial sedimentation in the Wolica Valley was evaluated by means of geomorphological, geological and sedimentological investigation. Sediments of the medium (II) raised terrace, the surface area of which is a dominant element of the valley, were examined. The terrace has a complex structure comprising deposits of different age, lithology and origin. The basal part of the terrace is formed from terrace remnants from the Middle Pleniglacial and the phase before maximum cold of the Upper Pleniglacial. The base consists of sandy channel deposits and silty-sandy floodplain deposits. The upper part of the terrace is a thick series of deposits from the phase after maximum cold. It is built from slope, floodplain and channel deposits, as well as alluvial fans. The complexity of the structure results from the specific character of periglacial processes and their rhythmical course, as well as from the influence of local conditions. The deposits of the basal part of the terrace were shaped in a subpolar climate with maritime features, whereas the sediments of its upper part formed in continental subpolar climate. Local factors, such as: lithology of rocks in the river drainage basin, a dense network of valleys in the basin and alluvial fans, determined the suspension type of transport, the shape of the river channel and retention of a large amount of sediment in the Wolica drainage basin and on its valley-floor.

The Toruń Basin is the eastern fragment of the Noteć-Warta ice-marginal streamway. Genesis of the Toruń Basin firstly demonstrates processes of erosion and accumulation of meltwaters and the Vistula waters which occur on the background of changes in the height of erosion base and tectonic movements. In the formation of the Toruń Basin one cannot exclude its older, glacial and interglacial assumptions either, as through its location the form is related to the course of the fossil valleys. The article presents functional stages and reorganizational mechanisms of water discharge directions in the Toruń Basin, stimulated by the tectonic activity of the older bed. In the Toruń Basin the following terrace sets can be distinguished: a) the outwash levels formed not so far away from the ice-sheet front, i.e. during the Wąbrzeźno Subphase, b) the distal sections of the outwash (XI, X), c) the Vistula ice-marginal streamway terraces (the transitional terrace and IX), d) the Vistula ice-marginal streamway terraces (VIII-VI) from the period of this river bifurcation at Fordon, and e) lower terraces of the Vistula valley. In the upper part of the Late Weichselian waters formed a system of sandbed braided rivers with changeable flow regime, which initially had higher energy, then reduced energy and high again. This resulted from the ice-sheet front retreat, intensity of its ablation and the inflow of the Vistula waters from the south.

mass accumulation rates (MAR)

Opis:
The European loess profiles provides evidence of changes in climate in the last glacial cycle. The final stage of loess accumulation took place in the youngest part of the last glacial (28 to 12 ka BP). Loess accumulated in two periods: from 28 to 18 ka BP and from 18 to 13 ka BP. These two stages were separated by a short phase of weaker aeolian activity and weak pedogenesis (initial tundra gleyed soils). The loess sedimentation rate can be defined as a mass accumulation rate (MAR ex pressed in g/m2/year). This value was calculated by Frechen et al. (2003) for several dozen loess sites across western and central Europe. In this paper we calculate the MAR for several loess sites in Poland and Ukraine. The MAR distribution across Poland and Ukraine is uneven in these two intervals. The MAR values oscillate between 100 to several thou sand g/m2/year. They markedly in crease eastwards, which may be explained by the latitudinal gradient of periglacial climate in the LateWeichselian (= Late Vistulian). The MAR distribution along a N-S trend confirms its large range in western and central Europe. However, the most easterly profiles (Polish and Ukrainian ones) show less variable thick nesses as the MAR was stable at a relatively low level from several hundred to more than a thou sand g/m2/year. This stability of the MAR characterized both loess-forming intervals in this part of Europe.

The profile of silty sediments in Tłumaczów was the subject of detailed lithological and malacological analyses. Abundant malacofauna represented by typical loess species were found in the sediments. The variability of the species composition and ecological structure of faunal assemblages provided the basis for the reconstruction of the sedimentary environment and characteristics of the climatic conditions that prevailed during the deposition of the sediments. The results of analyses indicate that the described sediments belong to the youngest loess series related to the Weichselian Upper Pleniglacial (MIS-2). The sequence of molluscan assemblages shows considerable similarities to the described faunas found in numerous loess profiles in southern Poland. It differs substantially from the malacological sequences recognized in loess profiles in Western and Southern Europe. This proves the significant and climate-determined diversification of malacocoenoses during the Weichselian Upper Pleniglacial (MIS-2) in Europe.

Opis:
A fragment of the middle terrace in the VistulaRivervalley, nearby the railway station in Kraków, is formed by fluvial channel and overbank deposits of the PrądnikRiver, which bear a record of various environments affected by changing climatic conditions. The sedimentary succession includes two complexes that differ in lithofacies. The older complex comprises fining-upward deposits (channel sand and gravelly sand with medium- and large-scale trough cross-stratification) and, less frequently, sand with planar cross-stratification overlain by silt with intercalations of biogenic deposits of abandoned channels. Vegetation accompanying the deposition of biogenic layers was typical of boreal coniferous forests, dominated by Pinus sylvestris with a small admixture of Larix, Pinus cembra, Picea, Betula, and Populus. Periodically, the landscape passed into open areas overgrown by woody tundra. The complex developed as a result of activity of a meandering river under conditions of a moderately cool climate. The younger complex includes the sand lithofacies with horizontal stratification and low-angle cross-stratification, overlain by alternating sands and silts. The topmost part is represented by sands with large- and medium scale planar cross stratification. Lack of biogenic deposits and considerable amount of frosted quartz grains in alluvial sediments indicate aeolian processes of greater intensity, periglacial conditions and evolution towards a braided or transitional river. Pollen successions, absolute dating and studies of structural and textural features of the sediment suggest that the time of its deposition may be estimated at a range between the close of the Eemian Interglacial and the Weichselian Middle Pleniglacial (OIS 5e–OIS 3).

Dumpstones and dropstones up to 0.8 m in size occur in a silty/sandy Weichselian glaciolacustrine succession near Dwasieden on Rügen Island in the SW Baltic Sea (NE Germany). The deposits are exceptional because two levels of dumpstones and dropstones are present, suggesting two dumping phases interrupting characteristic fine-grained glaciolacustrine sedimentation. Plastic downwarping of sediments below the dumpstones and dropstones result in soft-sediment deformation structures. The distribution and orientation of the long axes of the clasts are useful tools for the reconstruction of the state of the lake bottom, as well as for the water depth. The horizontal position of the gravels and boulders (parallel to the bedding) suggests deposition in relatively shallow-water. The dumping events are linked to iceberg rafting in a glacial lake during the Weichselian Glaciation (MIS 2).

Based on various cartographic sources, a digital terrain model and acoustic profiling data, linear relief features of glacial origin have been distin guished and analysed in the Gulf of Riga and adjacent mainland areas in order to reconstruct the dynamics and pathways of former ice streams. North-east–south-west oriented features in the till topography prevail in the central part of the gulf and along the southern coast of the island of Saaremaa, which corroborate the previously known south/south-east di rection of the main Riga ice stream. North-east to south-west directed features dominate in the Pärnu Bay and around the Irbe Strait. Similar deviations from the Riga ice stream are most likely due to ice divide zones, namely the Sakala Upland in Southern Estonia and Kurzeme in north western Latvia, which locally changed the course of the main ice flow. The influence of the Kurzeme ice divide is traceable at the bottom of the gulf up to the southern coast of Saaremaa. There is no evidence of an ice-marginal zone cross ing the central part of the Gulf of Riga as was supposed earlier. The Pandivere-Neva and Palivere ice-marginal zones, which merge on the Sorve Peninsula, probably continue offshore into the Irbe Strait. As the age of the glacier relieffeatures is poorly contained, the chronologi reconstruction of the ice dynamics is tentative.

The material comes from seven localities in the Krakow-Czestochowa Upland and in Podhale (southern Poland). These are: the Komarowa Cave, the Deszczowa Cave, the Upper Rock Shelter of the Deszczowa Cave, the cave in Dziadowa Skala, the Saspowska Zachodnia Cave, the Mamutowa Cave and the Oblazowa Cave. The obtained radiocarbon ages of most of the samples differs from their stratigraphy as formerly proposed. The reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. Also examined were the radiocarbon ages of bones from other caves in the study area. Most of the dated bones are shown to have come from relatively short time periods. The existing data on radiocarbon age of bones from Vistulian cave deposits of the Krakow-Czestochowa Upland and Podhale are summarized.

Opis:
The heavy-mineral composition of the Weichselian fluvial successions deposited by an ephemeral meandering river and by a sand-bed braided river in the Toruń Basin (central Poland) was analysed. On the basis of a lithofacies analysis, in combination with the composition of the heavy-mineral assemblages, the fluvial processes and river-channel morphology were reconstructed. This allows determining the provenance of the fluvial deposits and the rivers’ discharge regimes. A model is proposed which can explain the changes in the amount of individual minerals in the fluvial sediments of different ages under the conditions of the oscillating Scandinavian ice sheet. The model assumes that, during the ice-sheet advances, the proglacial streams supplied large amounts of heavy minerals that were less resistant to mechanical abrasion. During the main phase of the ice-sheet retreat, the distance between the ice sheet and the Toruń Basin increased, and the amount of non-resistant minerals diminished as a result of sediment reworking in proglacial rivers. Due to the unique location of the Toruń Basin at the front of the Scandinavian ice sheet during the Weichselian glaciation, the heavy-mineral assemblages in the fluvial deposits form a valuable tool for the recognition of the ice-sheet extent.

Opis:
In this paper we have analyzed the influence of the Weichselian ice sheet advance on the groundwater system in the Odra lobe area using hydrogeological numerical modelling performed with the finite difference method. The results indicate entire re-organization of the groundwater system in relation to non-glacial times mainly affecting the flow directions, velocities and fluxes. The re-organization of groundwater flow was caused by the pressure gradient imposed by the sloping ice sheet surface especially obvious under the ice margin and some distance in front of it. Simulated groundwater flow velocities are significantly higher than the present velocities in that area while the major groundwater flow direction is to the south, i.e. opposite to the present direction. Coupling the simulation results with assumed basal melting rate suggests that only a small fraction of basal meltwater [~24%) could have drained through the bed. The surplus water likely accumulated at the ice/bed interface facilitating faster ice flow of the Odra lobe due to enhanced basal sliding and bed deformation.

Opis:
During the construction of the S-3 road near Gorzów Wielkopolski, a sedimentary succession of the Eemian Interglacial and the older part of the Weichselian Glaciation were exposed. The succession, ~22 m thick, consists of lacustrine and fluvioglacial deposits. Lake sediments, mainly calcareous gyttja with peat intercalations, represent the infills of two palaeolakes. The almost complete skeleton of a forest rhinoceros, Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis, and a bone of the fallow deer Dama dama were found in the older lake deposits. Mollusc shells were numerous in both lake sequences, analysis of which revealed two types of assemblage, representing the coastal, littoral zone of a shallow lake with a muddy bottom. The sequence of mollusc communities observed in vertical succession allowed reconstruction of environmental changes during deposition. Several hydrological changes have been recognized within the palaeolake, especially water level fluctuations probably due to climate change.

The last Weichselian glacial advance into the western Baltic depression, the so-called "Young Baltic" glacier advance is described. In the southern Baltic depression, ice masses flowed westwards and fanned out in the western Baltic region where they terminated along the end moraines of the East Jutland advance (Denmark), Sehberg advance (Schleswig-Holstein) and Mecklenburg advance (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). The westward ice advance is likely due to the rapid melting of Norwegian and Swedish ice masses which had previously blocked the more easterly ice masses from draining to the west and north-west. The deposition of a purely eastern-sourced debris facies by a Baltic ice stream in the far west might be the result of ice/bed separation during flow.

Garnet composition within Late Pleistocene (Weichselian) loess and loess-like deposits was studied in 13 samples of sediment heavy mineral fractions from Moravia and Silesia (Czech Republic). Four areas differing in garnet chemistry were identified, and some regional trends in garnet composition changes were documented. The data obtained support the generally accepted conclu ion of prevailing westerly winds during Weichselian loess deposition. Metamorphic rocks of the Bohemian Massif together with contributions fromig neous (mainly granitic) and sedimentary rocks were indicated as a source for the Weichselian loess and loess-like deposits studied. Local differences in garnet composition depend on the basement source rocks, on prevailing wind direction, on regional geomorphology and on transport distance.

The results of sedimentological research documented changes of architectural elements of fluvial sedimentary environment of sand-bed braided rivers in the Toruń Basin. These rivers existed at the middle Weichselian and their deposits belong to the upper member of Zielonczyn Formation. The evolution of fluvial sedimentation took place in the two phases, which correspond to different channel macroforms. The braided river bed was dominated by a unit bars during the first phase, while in the second phase were evolved compound mid-channel bars as a result of the amalgamation of unit bars. The main causes of the transformation of river channel morphology in the area of the Toruń Basin during the Weichselian glaciation included changes in river regime from nival to proglacial and development of ice-marginal valley. Transformation of channel morphology resulted in an increase in the aggradation rate.

The main relief elements which document the sea level changes on the Kaffioyra Plain and the Isle of Hermansenoya, including the sea transgressions, are both abrasive (marine terraces) and accumulative (raised beaches). Such landforms have been relatively well preserved in the area of Kaffioyra. However, the issues relating to the number of such forms and their age remain questionable. They refer to the number of glacial episodes, the extension of the glaciers during these periods as well as the limit of the sea transgressions during and after the deglaciation of the NW Spitsbergen during the Weichselian and Holocene periods. The first detailed geomorphological research which was conducted in Kaffioyra and its vicinity and included geomorphological mapping, was carried out by Niewiarowski and Sinkiewicz during the Toruń Polar Expeditions to Spitsbergen in 1978 and 1985 (Niewiarowski et al. 1993). The authors listed the exact number and extension of the old marine terraces as well as the Late Weichselian marine limit. According to these studies, the Kaffioyra's marine terraces are of two generations. The Isle of Hermansenoya, located four km off the Kaffioyra's shores, has one generation of former marine terraces. The maximum Late Weichselian marine limit in Kaffioyra reached 46–48 m a.s.l., while in Hermansenoya it reached about 33 m a.s.l. On both the Kaffioyra Plain and the Isle of Hermansenoya there is evidence of the Holocene sea level changes.

The conditions of glacigenic sedimentation during the Pomeranian Phase of the Weichselian Glaciation in northeastern Germany are reconstructed on the ba sis of the typical lithofacies successions and the depositional architecture of the distal and proximal parts of a sandur, as well as of those in the hinterland area of the glaciomarginal zone. The proximal parts of the sandur are characterized by the occurrence of boulders, pebbles and gravels, and horizontally stratified sands cut by large channel troughs in the upper parts. The occurrence of the channel structures indicates frequent torrential ablation floods. Horizontally and cross-stratified rhythms of sandy and gravelly lithofacies, indicating pulsatory ablation flows, are also frequent. The distal part of the sandur is dominated by horizontally stratified sands and sands with low- angle tabular cross-stratification. In the hinter land of the Pomeranian Glaciation, a thick layer of till is present, which locally is glaciotectonically deformed. Moraines left during glacial retreat, with gravity-redeposited till, are also present.

Glacial environment is characterised by a very wide variety of sediments. In contrast to other sedimentary environments it is difficult to determine the leading unit. Therefore, more often the complexes of sediments and forms are examined, rather than individual facies indicator. The aim of this paper is to present a diversity of forms and sediments in Wielkopolska (in selected study area, which will be presented during the excursion) with an attempt to interpret their sedimentary environment. The authors do not concentrate on discussion about the importance of frontal or areal deglaciation in the formation and differentiation of forms and sediments. They emphasise the importance of depositional effectiveness.

The Earth’s thermal field, particularly the heat flow density (HFD), is a valuable source of information on geodynamic processes within the Earth’s crust, conditions for hydrocarbon generation and on ar eas and formations promising for geothermal energy. Lithospheric thermal and rheological modelling is critically dependent on high-quality surface heat flow values. The available maps of heat flow density, not only for the area of Poland, are not reliable from the point of view of the current state of knowledge. The main critical factorin determining heat flow density is the knowledge of depth distribution of thermal conductivity. We used a new method of estimating the thermal conductivity from well logging data interpretation with control calibration based on laboratory determined thermal parameters. We con sider that the observed vertical variations of HFD in the shallow part of profiles (<2000 m) are mainly due to a Holocene warming. We have proposed a new original method of determination of HFD based on modelling of palaeoclimatic ef fect. Using this method, we have calculated new HFD values for 308 deep boreholes and completed a new map of this parameter for Poland, which is the first of this type. We propose to undertake a critical analysis of all the existing heat flow data not only for Europe that may change the present understanding of global heat flow.

Opis:
The sequence of Weichselian sediments and processes in SW Poland is almost identical to that of central Poland. Generally, three fluvial units occur, comprising silts and sands coarsening upwards to silts, sands and gravels, with aeolian deposits on top. This suggests very uniform processes throughout the palaeogeographic zone. To the south of this zone, there was extensive loess deposition and glacial deposition to the north. Climatic conditions during the Middle and Upper Weichselian Pleniglacial in SW Poland were similar to those in central Poland and northwestern Europe, though the period of 47-43 kyrs BP was slightly milder in SW Poland (shrub tundra, forest-tundra). Climatic conditions during the periods 38-27 kyrs BP and 23-18 kyrs BP were very uniform throughout central Europe, including SW Poland, though there may have been a strong north-south climatic gradient during the former period, as data from the loessic zone indicate at least patches of boreal forest or forest-tundra conditions in SW Poland at that time. It is also possible that there was a Middle Weichselian Pleniglacial interstadial with a lower age boundary at 25,900 ą 700 years BP, characterised by Pinus-Picea forest with no heliophytes. This interstadial represents the last mild period before the advance of the late Weichselian ice sheet into SW Poland. The Weichselian fluvial deposition of SW and central Poland may have been punctuated by at least three major erosional phases, characterised by similar incision depths during the cold stages. Erosion took place, with certainty, at around 75-60 kyrs BP (Lower Pleniglacial) and 27 kyrs BP, very probably at around 23/22 kyrs and possibly at around 40 kyrs BP, and valley aggradation occurred during the milder stages. The Upper Pleniglacial was characterised by valley aggradation, associated with southward ice sheet advance and restricted fluvial outflow. However, the frequent Middle Pleniglacial Weichselian climatic oscillations did not initiate sedimentation and erosion, they controlled only river discharge and type of fluvial sedimentation and aeolian activity. The occurrence of the erosional and aggradational phases were controlled by the changes in ice volume in Scandinavia, ice sheet build-up and retreat, respectively.

Diamicton in Biesiekierz (central Poland), whose age and origin has long provoked debate, is located above unquestionable Eemian biogenic deposits documented by palynological and Cladocera analyses. Petrographically, this diamicton shows some similarities to Warthanian till. Lithologically, it shows considerable weathering of the deposit, a possible selection of the component minerals and addition of dispersed biogenic matter. The results obtained so far as well as the palaeomorphological situation indicate that the diamicton is reworked till material, as are sand intercalations within it. Given the organic content of this diamicton, we infer that a long-term agricultural exploitation of its immediate surroundings was the main factor behind colluvial reworking and displacement occurring above the Eemian biogenic deposits in the fossil depression.

Well developed NE-SW trending corridors of outwash in NE Poland are associated with a series of lakes with a similar direction of elongation. The glaciofluvial corridor under study consists of parallel ridges with associated channels and kames. The deposits are flanked by till and hummocky terrain. The gravel ridges are composed of sand and gravel deposits that are cross-stratified, massive or graded, and that contain cut-and-fill structures and large intra-clasts of sand and gravel. Locally the deposits show normal faults. The succession of one of the ridges is interpreted to reflect the infilling of a braided channel in a crevasse. Sedimentation took place in some phases when the ice-sheet regime changed from active to stagnant. Sandy-gravel ridges occur within this complex perpendicular to the Weichselian icesheet margin. The corridor is interpreted as an interlobate area in the zone between the Warmia and Mazury ice lobes. The braided-channel deposits are not comparable to typical Polish sandurs. The lithofacies characteristics show higher energy conditions, and the channels are deeper than those typical of Pleistocene lowland sandurs. The sand and gravel ridges are interpreted as interlobate eskers.

A sedimentary succession in a gravel pit at Niedźwiedziny was investigated in order to determine its origin: kame or moraine. The gravel pit is located in an isolated hill of approx. 600 m long and 250–400 m wide. The succession is built of glaciofluvial deposits: a sandy/gravelly unit in the lower and middle parts, overlain by diamicton. Five lithofacies have been distinguished, which represent two facies associations: (1) a fluvial association evolving from a high-energy to a transitional to a shallow braided river on an alluvial fan, and (2) an association of cohesive deposits representing a glacigenic mass flow. The interpretation is based mainly on palaeocurrent data and differs from conclusions by earlier investigators. The ice-marginal zone is characterised by a large variety of glaciomarginal forms. Their sedimentology, morphology and palaeogeography are determined by successive phases of deglaciation. The results of the present study show that the character of the deglaciation in the study area changed with time from frontal to areal deglaciation.

This study from the Szczerców field of the Bełchatów open-cast mining complex, central Poland, reveals the local geomorphic and stratigraphic history of the Krasówka river palaeovalley – a major western tributary of the river Widawka. The data are from the western flank of the N-trending palaeovalley and the study combines detailed lithofacies analysis of outcrop sections, sediment petrology, AMS measurements and palynological evidence. Radiocarbon dates are of crucial importance for the reconstruction of the palaeovalley history. The study contributes to a better understanding of the response of the Central European river systems to the Vistulian Pleniglacial conditions. The Vistulian Pleniglacial sedimentation in the study area commenced with the accumulation of the latest Eemian to earliest Weichselian (≥45 ka) deposits by sheetwash processes in a local karstic topographic depression. The Krasówka river then formed to the east and shifted farther eastwards, but later approached twice the study area with a net aggradation prior to 43 ka BP – flooding it with overbank deposits. The river subsequently incised by nearly 20 m around 40 ka BP and began to fill in its valley by aggradation around 35 ka BP, while migrating eastwards and markedly decreasing its flooding capacity from 33 to 24 ka BP. The fluvial system was rejuvenated around 21 ka BP, with some initial erosion, and kept filling its valley by aggradation while flooding the valley flank. The river after filling its valley continued to aggrade, but gradually ran out of vertical accommodation and migrated westwards. The fluvial activity at this stage was increasingly accompanied by aeolian sedimentation. Once the Mid-Weichselian Pleniglacial came to an end around 14.5 ka BP, the Krasówka river had re-incised by nearly 5 m and assumed its present-day altitude in response to the post-glacial regional isostatic rebound of crustal basement.

The author presents a new concept of the outflow from the ice-dammed lake that formed in the Warsaw Basin during the Main Stage of the last glaciation. The basic issue under discussion is the possibility of the outflow along the Warsaw-Berlin pradolina in the light of the contemporary hypsometric relations in its eastern section. A new scheme of the ice sheet ranges during the Main Stage of the Weichselian Glaciation reveals that during the older phase of this stage, the Leszno Phase, the outflow from the ice-dammed lake was possible through the Bachorza valley, i.e. omitting the Ice-marginal Valley’s eastern section. The author also considers the role of halokinesis in changing the hypsometrical conditions in the eastern part of the Warsaw-Berlin pradolina.

In the Serteyka River valley in western Russia, eight accumulative fans formed at the mouths of ravines were examined geologi-cally and geomorphologically. The test samples were collected from individual geological drillings made with a manual probe, as well as from excavations in the central and distal zones of the fans. Using the Gradistat program, sedimentological indicators were calculated, i.e. mean grain diameter (MZ), standard deviation (sorting – σI), skewness (SkI) and kurtosis (KG),and then particle-size distribution frequency curves, cumulative curves and a Passega C/M diagram were drawn. It has been documented that the grain size of the fan sediments depends on the characteristics of the source material. Analysis of sedimentological indicators (mean grain diameter, sorting, skewness, kurtosis) showed the studied fans deposits to have a large variability of erosion and accumulation conditions. For the deposits of younger fans, the 2nd system of the MZ-versus-σI relationship after Mycielska-Dowgiałło (1995) was distinguished, while for the older, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th systems were recognised. The main process of grain transport within these forms was saltation. The ravines on the eastern slope of the Serteyka valley were most likely created in the periglacial period, while the gullies on the western side of the valley developed in the early modern period.

In the Polish Lowlands, three main ice lobes, referred to as Odra, Vistula and Mazury, formed during the Last Scandinavian Glaciation. These lobes protruded at least several kilometres beyond the main ice margin and it is believed that they represent terminal parts of the ice streams. Applied geostatistical analysis based on numerous geological data has allowed an approximate reconstruction of the Odra ice lobe substratum in the area of northwest Poland and northeast Germany. A spatial representation of the Odra lobe substratum clearly illustrates the adverse slope of the glacier bed, but also indicates areas morphologically prone to ice streaming. It is suggested that the ice took advantage of local topography that enabled advance out of the Baltic basin; consequently, the ice followed a topographic low which, in combination with favourable hydraulic conditions of its substratum, likely initiated ice streaming.

Opis:
The Udryń PIG 1 research borehole drilled in northeastern Poland (54°14’49”N, 23°03’29”E, 223 m a.s.l.) revealed a permafrost layer, at least 93 m thick, within the sedimentary succession below a depth of 357 m. The base of the permafrost has not been reached at 450 m depth, where the drilling stopped, so its total present thickness remains unknown. The relict permafrost, unexpected in this part of Central Europe, is in the ice-water transition phase at a temperature slightly below the 0°C. Analysis of geophysical and hydrogeological data indicates the possibility of preserving the permafrost in the central part of sedimentary cover of the Suwałki Anorthosite Massif over an area of probably 50 km2. Preliminary results of geothermal modelling indicate maximum palaeothickness of permafrost at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum of probably ~600 m. The development of such a thick permafrost results both from a very low average annual temperature in the Weichselian Glaciation and a very low terrestrial heat flow density. It is very probable that similar zones of deep relict permafrost occurrences, undetected so far, may exist in other areas of the Precambrian Platform not only in Poland, but also in the neighbouring countries.

Opis:
Palaeoslopes of Weichselian sand-bed braided rivers have been reconstructed for two stages of fluvial development in the Toruń Basin. (1) The palaeoslope of the ‘fossil’ fluvial succession (buried under Weichselian tills) was calculated on the basis of the median grain size and the Shields parameter. The hydraulic gradient thus found is comparable with the hydraulic gradient of the present-day river. (2) The second developmental stage of the Toruń Basin (as a apart of the Noteć-Warta ice-marginal valley) took place after deglaciation. The slopes of river terraces are a few times lower than those calculated on the basis of the Shields parameter. The palaeoslope of the then river was estimated on the basis of a constant interdependency between the braidplain width, the channel geometry and the grain size. The river gradient that was thus calculated is similar to the measured terrace slope. Palaeoslope estimates in valleys similar to those in the Toruń Basin should consider the width of the braidplain.

Samples collected from Late Pleistocene varved clays of the Vistulian (Weichselian) glaciation exposed at Lębork and Złocieniec (Gardno and Pomeranian phases, respectively) yielded palynological contents that are related to the different lithologies composing the varves. The dark-coloured clay units contain very small amounts of palynological material. The lighter-coloured, much thicker coarser units yielded large amounts of organic particles consisting of predominantly palynodebris of terrestrial plants, sporomorphs and aquatic palynomorphs. The latter include fresh-water and marine phytoplankton. All particles were presumably washed out from the pre-Quaternary basement or from erratic material. This is indicated by the dinoflagellate-cyst assemblages, which represent Cretaceous and Palaeogene taxa. The large amounts of organic particles in the light-coloured layers indicate high-energy meltwaters streams, which washed them out, transported them and deposited them in ice-dammed lakes. The barren layers and those with lower amounts of organic particles were deposited during calm, presumably winter, periods, when the energy of the meltwater streams was much lower.

The lithology, structure and geophysical characteristics of the glaciolacustrine clays deposited in the Wierzchowo proglacial lake were determined using static penetration tests (CPTU) in combination with standard lithological measurements. The deposits are divided into four lithological units (R1 to R4) on the basis of overconsolidation. Units R3 and R4 are separated by mass-flow deposits. The depositional conditions history of the lake result represent four phases: (1) an initial (low-energy) phase with the deposition of the rhythmically laminated sediments of units R1 and R2, which are divided by an erosional interval; (2) a phase of non-deposition with some desiccation structures and extended consolidation of sediments; (3) the main phase characterised by deposition of the rhythmically laminated sediments of unit R3; and finally, (4) the youngest phase, which represents alternations of deposition and erosion. The results show that sedimentation in the Wierzchowo proglacial lake was less continuous, and that the depositional processes were more complex than in the neighboring Złocieniec glacial lake.

Opis:
Studies of the till structure and composition of the Baltija (Pomeranian) Stage of the Nemunas (Weichselian) Glaciation in Lithuania has enabled recognition of a multilayered till structure. This can be seen visually (colour, bed structure, interlayers, insertions of different composition and so on) and established from features determined by analytical and statistical methods (physical and mechanical properties, material composition, orientation and dip of longer axes of pebbles). Borehole log data from boreholes drilled during geological mapping showed heterogeneity within the subglacial till of the Baltija Stage and provided a preliminary picture of variations of its multilayered structure from S to N. This showed that two layers predominate in the subglacial till in the area of the South Lithuanian Phase while three layers are present in the area of the Middle Lithuanian Phase farther north. The petrographic composition of the gravel fraction as well as the orientation and dip of the long axes of pebbles measured in till beds in natural exposures and quarries further demonstrated the multilayered structure of the Baltija till. Research at key sections in areas of the subsurface extent of till of the East, South and Middle Lithuanian phases of the Baltija glacial recession confirmed the increase in the number of till layers from S to N. The physical and mechanical properties of the till also reflect its multilayered structure. Relative entropy values calculated for the grain-size frequency distribution of the Baltija till enabled evaluation of a change in its sorting along the direction of glacial ice advance from N to S. There is a correlation between the higher values of entropy of grain-size distribution and the rate of development of preferred orientation of longer axes of pebbles throughout the till section vertically. The formation of themultilayered structure of the Baltija till is ascribed to cyclic dynamics of the subglacial processes associated with the receding ice sheet; consequently, the number of subglacial till layers may be related to the marginal moraine ridges of different phases left by oscillation of the ice sheet margin during glacial recession.

Pochodzące z vistulianu szczątki ptaków znane są w Polsce niemal wyłącznie z osadów jaskiń i schronisk skalnych, w sumie z 18 stanowisk. Relatywnie liczne są wyłącznie szczątki pochodzące ze środkowego i późnego vistulianu. W artykule podsumowano zamieszczone w literaturze dane dotyczące występowania i zróżnicowania gatunkowego kości ptaków w vistuliańskich osadach powyższych 18 stanowisk. Zespoły ptaków z vistuliańskich osadów poszczególnych jaskiń i schronisk skalnych stanowiły często podstawę rekonstrukcji paleośrodowiska, rzadziej paleoklimatu. Prezentowane temperatury odnoszą się do następujących faz klimatycznych vistulianu: późny vistulian (bölling, starszy dryas, alleröd, młodszy dryas), późny plenivistulian, środkowy plenivistulian (denekamp, hengelo), wczesny plenivistulian (schalkholz) i wczesny vistulian (odderade). Wskazano mocne i słabe strony rekonstrukcji paleotemperatur na podstawie powyższych zespołów ptaków.
Vistulian bird-bone remains are known in Poland almost exclusively from sediments of 18 caves and rockshelters in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, the Podhale Depression and the Holy Cross Mountains. Only remains from the Middle and Late Vistulian are relatively abundant. The present contribution summarizes literature data on the occurrence and species diversity of bird-bone remains from the 18 sites mentioned above. The bird-bone assemblages from the caves and rock-shelters were often used to reconstruct the then palaeoenvironment, more rarely the palaeoclimate. Analysis of the bird-bone assemblages indicates average July temperatures for some Vistulian intervals, viz. the Late Vistulian (Bölling, Older Dryas, Alleröd, Younger Dryas), Late Plenivistulian, Middle Plenivistulian (Denekamp, Hengelo), Early Plenivistulian (Schalkholz) and Early Vistulian (Odderade). Most of the temperatures were assessed through thermal indices (Demarcq & Mourer-Chauvire 1976), but they were estimated by Lorenc’s (2007) method as well. Both methods are explained in the present contribution. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of palaeotemperature reconstruction on the basis of bird-bone assemblages are specified.

The maximum ice-sheet extent of a glaciation or glacial phase is in most cases indicated by the position of end moraines. In some cases, however, the maximum extent of the ice sheet is indicated by a fan which represents the transitional zone between the end moraine and the proximal outwash plain (sandur). Such a fan from the Pomeranian phase near Charlottenthal in NE Germany has been investigated for its lithofacies, and the depositional mechanisms of the two sedimentary environments (end moraine and outwash plain) are reconstructed. The Charlottenthal profile is not characteristic in a sedimentological sense of a typical marginal end moraine or a sandur. The deposits represent subaerial debris flows, sheet floods and channelized currents, which are typically processes for transitional fan. Gravel samples from the till complex show typical Weichselian till compositions. These till compositions indicate a general transport direction from North to South, which is consistent with the known movement of the ice sheet during the Pomeranian phase of the Weichselian.

Glacial tills and fluvioglacial sediments deposited by the ice-sheet during the Pomeranian Stage (Weichselian) in northeast Germany have been examined in terms of the degree of abrasion, rounding and frosting of quartz grain surfaces in order to determine the conditions and processes that occurred in the alimentation environment of the fine-grained material, as well as during transport. Strata in the glaciomarginal zone and the hinterland of the Pomeranian Stage in the area represent diverse lithofacies, but have similar textural features. These features illustrate mainly that a high-energy aquatic environment had reacted with glacial deposits prior to their inclusion into the ice mass and deposited in the area covered by the Odra lobe. The lack of regional diversification in the character of quartz grain surfaces in glacial deposits between the German part of the Odra lobe and the remainder of the area analysed is recorded solely in the morphological dimension, i.e. the outlet fragment of the ice-front’s course, but not in textural features of the sediments.

Opis:
During the Pleistocene the Scandinavian ice sheet drained huge quantities of sediment-laden meltwaters. These meltwaters supplied ice-marginal valleys that formed parallel to the front of the ice sheet. Not without significance was the supply of ice-marginal valleys from extraglacial rivers in the south. Moreover, periglacial conditions during and after sedimentation in ice-marginal valleys, the morphology of valley bedrocks, and erosion of older sediments played important roles in the depositional scenarios, and in the mineralogical composition of the sediments. The mechanisms that controlled the supply and deposition in ice-marginal valleys were analysed on the basis of a Pleistocene ice-marginal valley that was supplied by northern and southern source areas in the immediate vicinity. Investigations were conducted in one of the largest ice-marginal valleys of the Polish-German lowlands, i.e., the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley, in sandurs (Drawa and Gwda) supplied sediments and waters from the north into this valley, and on extraglacial river terraces (pre-Noteć and pre-Warta rivers), formed simultaneously with the sandurs and ice-marginal valley (Pomeranian phase of Weichselian glaciation) supplied sediments and waters from the south into this valley. A much debated question is how similar, or different, depositional processes and sediments were that contributed to the formation of the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley, and whether or not it is possible to differentiate mostly rapidly aggraded sandur sediments from ice-marginal valley sediments. Another question addresses the contribution of extraglacial feeding of the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley. These matters were addressed by a wide range of analyses: sediment texture and structure, architectural elements of sediments, frequency of sedimentary successions, heavy-mineral analysis (both transparent and opaque heavy minerals), analysis of rounding and frosting of quartz grains, and palaeohydrological calculations. Additionally, a statistical analysis was used. The specific depositional conditions of distribution of sediments in ice-marginal valley allow to distinguish new environment of ice-marginal valley braided river. The spectrum of depositional conditions in the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley and their specific palaeohydraulic parameters allow to distinguish three coexisting zones in the ice-marginal valley braided-river system: (1) deep gravel-bed braided channel zone with extensive scours, (2) deep sand-bed braided channel zone with transverse bars, and (3) marginal sand-bed and gravel-bed braided channel zone with diamicton and breccia deposition, which were characterised in detail. Some of the results have been published previously, which is why they are discussed in the present paper within the context of new data.

W kontekście przyrastającej ilości danych z badań interdyscyplinarnych rysuje się możliwość konstrukcji regionalnego mo-delu rozwoju środowiska.
The article presents the palaeogeographical recognition of the Late Vistulian in the Łódź Region. For three sedi-mentary environments – fluvial, slope and aeolian – tendencies of aggradation and degradation have been identified and preserved geological and morphological evidences have been characterized. Morphogenetic processes have been related to global climatic changes of the Pleistocene-Holocene transition and varying local conditions. Attention was drawn to non-uniformity in the application of the term “Late Vistulian”, depending on the stratigraphical division, or to glacial or extragla-cial areas. The progress that has been made in the registration of the Late Vistulian processes is emphasized. In view of the increasing data of interdisciplinary research, the construction of a regional model for the environmental development is pos-sible in the nearest future.

The complexity of glacial sequences may increase when these formed underneath ice sheets despite subsequent changes in their extent that are accompanied by alterations in the direction of the ice flow. Our aim was to determine whether or not changes in ice sheet dynamics during the Late Weichselian are also recorded in sediments formed north of the area of its fluctuating margin (i.e., where the ice sheet prevailed independent of such fluctuations). It is shown that in these areas such a record could have occurred, as documented by results of till studies at Babie Doły. The examination was carried out using several analyses: lithofacies properties of sediments, petrographic till composition (fine gravel fraction, indicator erratics), till matrix CaCO3 content, till fabric, as well as orientation of striae on the top surfaces of large clasts. In parallel, datings of sub- and supra-till sediments using the TL method were carried out. The basal till at Babie Doły represents almost the entire Upper Weichselian, but it can be divided into subunits whose features indicate different ice flow directions and debris supply. The lower subunit developed as a result of the palaeo-ice stream along the main axis of the Baltic Sea (from the north), expanding to areas adjacent to the depression of the Gulf of Gdańsk. The upper subunit developed when the influence of the palaeo-ice stream in the study area decreased, the main role having been taken over by the ice flowing from the northwest. The till analysed also shows considerable lateral variation, indicative of the mosaic nature of subglacial sedimentation. We consider the diversity of permeability of deposits over which the ice sheet extended to be the prime factor that determined such a situation.

The Russian–Lithuanian cross-border area around the Nemunas and Šešupė rivers confluence is a key area for solving palaeogeographic issues important for this region: when the Nemunas Delta started to form, why the essential changes of hydrographic network occurred, and so on. The results of conventional radiocarbon (14C) dating and pollen analysis in the present dry valley between the Šešupė River and the Įrutis River as well as the results of former studies at the Riadino-5 archaeological site suggest that the essential changes in the Nemunas River hydrographic system occurred before 9.5 ka, most likely in Preboreal time, when the Nemunas River cut through the Vilkiškė Marginal Ridge and started to flow directly to the west from this ridge into one of the former basins of the Baltic Sea – to the Yoldia Sea, or to the Ancylus Lake. A new divide was formed between the Šešupė and Įsrutis rivers, and the basins of the Nemunas and Prieglius rivers (formerly a single hydrographic system) became two independent drainage basins of the Baltic Sea. The present Nemunas Delta formation started after the Litorina Sea transgression when the Nemunas River mouth moved from a Baltic Sea nearshore position to close to the western margin of the Vilkiškės Marginal Ridge. A set of palaeogeographic reconstructions of the Nemunas and Šešupė rivers confluence area for different periods of the very end of the Last (Weichselian) Glacial and the beginning of the Holocene have been constructed.

Opis:
In recent years, the amount of data, which yield information on the environment of the Late Vistulian, significant-ly increased. This is a result of increased interest of analyses of biogenic deposits, containing organic remains which allow to reconstruct past environmental conditions. A valuable archive are these profiles of biogenic sediments in which variation in terms of both ecology and morphogenetic processes has been registered. The article overviews these sites of the Łódź region which provide the most complete record and were analysed within the framework of interdisciplinary studies. Attention is drawn to the possibility to reconstruct environmental parameters that give the individual paleoecological analyses. It was pointed that the sites of the Central Poland have an advantage over those from the young morainic area, due to the earlier start of the bioaccumulation.

Opis:
During the Pomeranian phase of the Weichselian glaciation (~17–16 ka), the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley (NW Poland and easternmost Germany) drained water from the Pomeranian ice sheet, while intensive aeolian processes took place across Europe in the foreland of the Scandinavian ice sheet (‘European Sand Belt’). The micromorphology of the quartz grains in the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley shows no traces of these aeolian processes, or only vague signs of aeolian abrasion. This is unique among the aeolian sediments in other Pleistocene ice-marginal valleys in this part of Europe. The study of the surfaces of the quartz grains shows that the supply of grains by streams from the south was minimal, which must be ascribed to the climate deterioration during the Last Glacial Maximum, which resulted in a decrease of the discharge of these extraglacial rivers to the ice-marginal valley.

Opis:
The Warta River valley was greatly influenced by the ice sheet of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). A small peatland located in the Warta drainage system is here used as a palaeoarchive of climatic and habitat changes during the Late Glacial (Weichselian). The Ługi sediment profile was investigated using multi-proxy (pollen, Chironomidae, Cladocera and geochemistry) analyses that recorded changes in a fluviogenic sedimentary depression. After the Poznań Phase (LGM), Ługi functioned as an oxbow lake that was cut off from the active river channel as a result of fluvial erosion. Since that time, the Warta River has flowed only along the section now occupied by the Jeziorsko Reservoir. Sedimentation of lacustrine deposits started at the beginning of the Late Glacial. Summer temperature reconstructions indicate cool Oldest and Younger Dryas, but no clear cooling in the Older Dryas. During the Younger Dryas the palaeolake was completely occupied by a peatland (fen), which periodically dried out during the Holocene. Investigation of this site has tracked the reaction of the habitat to climatic, hydrological and geomorphological changes throughout the Late Weichselian.

Opis:
Fens have been forming in the river valleys of central Poland since the Bølling and went through a transformation from fully aquatic to semiterrestrial habitats during the Younger Dryas/Holocene transition. This drove plant and invertebrate communities and left a distinct pattern in chemical sediment composition, which is why river valley peatlands are sensitive palaeo-archives of climatic, hydrological and edaphic changes. Here we reconstruct the Late Weichselian history of the Bęczkowice fen in the upper Luciąża River valley using geochemical, pollen, Cladocera and Chironomidae proxies. Pollen-based age estimation indicates that the analysed peat sequence dates from the Bølling to Early Holocene. The layers 190-170 cm and 125-105 cm of the studied core were reworked by fluvial processes. Chironomidae and Cladocera communities indicate mostly limnetic conditions during the Allerød and early Younger Dryas. Peatland pools were supplied mostly by Luciąża River floods, but also by groundwater. Since the onset of the Holocene, the water level has dropped, eliminating aquatic midges and water fleas, and supporting taxa typical of astatic waters and wet soil.

Presented are the results of research into the fluvio-aeolian sedimentary succession at the site of Postolin in the Żmigród Basin, southwest Poland. Based on lithofacies analysis, textural analysis, Thermoluminescence and Infrared-Optical Stimulated Luminescence dating and GIS analysis, three lithofacies units were recognised and their stratigraphic succession identified: 1) the lower unit was deposited during the Pleni-Weichselian within a sand-bed braided river functioning under permafrost conditions within the central part of the alluvial fan; 2) the middle unit is the result of aeolian deposition and fluvial redeposition on the surface of the fan during long-term permafrost and progressive decrease of humidity of the climate at the turn of the Pleni to the Late Weichselian; 3) the upper unit accumulated following the development of longitudinal dunes at the turn of the Late Weichselian to the Holocene; the development of dunes was interrupted twice by the form being stabilised by vegetation and soil development.

Opis:
The article presents the results of geological and geomorphological research concerning load-cast structures outcropping in the alluvial terrace sediments of theWisłok River in the Fore-Carpathian Erosional Valley. Given the large dimensions of these structures, reaching 1.5 m in some places, as well as their strong accumulation and diversity (i.e. drop-like and pocket-like structures), the authors attempted to establish the environmental factors that had determined the development of the structures in periglacial deposits of the Weichselian Glaciation. The structures were analysed in two accessible outcrops where sediments are represented by flood rhythmite and organic deposits, overlain by channel sands. Sandy load-cast structures occur in flood rhythmite and loamy deposits. The formation of load-cast structures probably started due to earthquakes in the Upper Pleniglacial period. The various shapes of load-cast structures were constrained by the various physical properties of the sediments and the escape of water during the deformation process.

Opis:
During the maximum of the last glaciation the Vistula ice lobe was one of the key morphological elements at southern margin of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet in north-central Poland. The area of the Vistula ice lobe experienced two ice sheet advances of varied extent, the earlier one during the Leszno Phase and the younger one in the Poznań Phase. According to the authors, the limit of the Leszno Phase within the study area was much smaller than hitherto accepted and its age is estimated at about 20.5 ka BP. Significant ice sheet retreat was followed by an ice readvance during the Poznań Phase, overriding the extent of the Leszno Phase. The Poznań readvance reached the maximum limit in the Vistula ice lobe area about 18.5 ka BP. It is assumed that the rapid ice sheet transgression during the Poznań Phase (on average 400 m/a) and origin of the Vistula lobe were probably connected with activity of the palaeo-ice stream.

Badaniom sedymentologicznym poddano gliny lodowcowe fazy poznańskiej zlodowacenia wisły na dwóch stanowiskach terenowych (Przeszkoda i Obórki), zlokalizowanych w północnej części Pojezierza Dobrzyńskiego.
Sedimentological analyses were performed on glacial till of the Weichselian glaciation in two field sites (Przeszkoda and Obórki) which are located in northern part of the Dobrzyń Lakeland. During the last glaciation this area was covered by the Vistula ice lobe which development has been determined by the Vistula Ice Stream. A multi-proxy approach including a study of sedimentary features, grain size, petrographic composition, till fabric and till micromorphology was used in reconstruction of till formation and ice movement mechanisms. Analysed tills are massive and stratified. We suggest existing of complex and temporally variable conditions under the Vistula ice lobe, probably caused by subglacial water fluctuations. Ice movement was caused by a combination of bed deformation and basal sliding.
