- The aim of the article is to reconstruct the image of Berlin of 1939-1945, as presented in Hanns- Josef Ortheil’s autobiographical work Die Berlinreise. Roman eines Nachgeborenen and to attempt to answer the question of reasons behind the writer’s ambivalent attitude toward this city. The book was first published in 2014 and it developed out of travel diary from a journey to Berlin, which the twelve-year-old Hanns-Josef Ortheil made with his father in 1964. During the visit, the boy creates his own image of the metropolis, as a result of both wandering across the city with his father and a careful study of his mother’s old records. These notes represent a unique testimony of her emotional states, and also constitute a document of the daily chores of a young woman, lonely and marked by the trauma of war experiences. The presentation of Berlin in the years 1939-1954 which emerges from Ortheil’s narrative is inextricably bound with the fortunes of his family, which are here unveiled against the background of momentous historical events whereby the historical perspective intertwines with detailed descriptions of the personal aspects of the setting. This form of narration brings the narrative in close contact with the classical epic tradition.
