Opis:
Estimating travel time is one of the most important processes in logistics as well as in everyday life. In particular, when it comes to transportation services, efficient time management can be a competitive advantage, not to mention customer satisfaction, which can be easily translated into business success. Therefore, in this study we analyze various travel time estimation methods in combination with a well-known Fuzzy C-Means clustering algorithm. The proposed FCM-based solution has significant advantages, allowing for the determination of the optimal travel time. In an extensive numerical experiment, we present the application of the proposed method to estimate the time of a taxi trip around New York. Due to division of the city area into detailed areas and taking into account information about the travel time in the analysis, a model was obtained, that perfectly forecasts speed of taxi travel. In this study we consider various, competitive approaches to build such a model.

The travel time tomography technology had achieved wide application, the hinge of tomography was inversion algorithm, the ray path tracing technology had a great impact on the inversion results. In order to improve the SNR of inversion image, comprehensive utilization of inversion results with different ray tracing can be used. We presented an imaging fusion method based on improved Wilkinson iteration method. Firstly, the shortest path method and the linear travel time interpolation were used for forward calculation; then combined the improved Wilkinson iteration method with super relaxation precondition method to reduce the condition number of matrix and accelerate iterative speed, the precise integration method was used to solve the inverse matrix more precisely in tomography inversion process; finally, use wavelet transform for image fusion, obtain the final image. Therefore, the ill- conditioned linear equations were changed into iterative normal system through two times of treatment and using images with different forward algorithms for image fusion, it reduced the influence effect of measurement error on imaging. Simulation results showed that, this method can eliminate the artifacts in images effectively, it had extensive practical significance.

Assessment of travel time reliability as a fundamental factor in travel behaviour has become a very important aspect in both transport modelling and economic appraisal. Improved reliability could provide a significant economic benefit if it is adequately calculated in cost-benefit analyses for which the theoretical background has already been set. However, methods to forecast travel time reliability as well as travel behaviour models including its effects are rather scarce and there is a need for development in this field. Another important aspect could be the influencing factor of reliability in travel demand management and related policy-making. Therefore, this paper intends to further analyse reliability focusing exclusively on urban road transport based on automatic measurements of journey times and traffic volumes from a dataset of the city of Budapest. The main finding and the novelty of the study is a model which can forecast the standard deviation of travel times based on the volume-capacity ratio and the free-flow travel time. The paper also provides a real-life numerical experiment in which the proposed model has been compared with other, existing ones. It proves that besides existing mean-delay-based models, travel time reliability can be forecasted based on the volume-capacity ratio with an adequate accuracy.

Opis:
Efficient management of ambulance utilisation is a vital issue for life saving. Knowledge of the amount of time needed for an ambulance to get to the hospital and when it will be available for a new task, can be estimated using modern Intelligent Transport Systems. Their main feature is an ability to simulate the state of traffic not only in long term, but also the real time events like accidents or high congestion, using microscopic models. The paper introduces usage of Quantum Computing paradigm to propose a quantum model of road traffic, which can track the state of traffic and estimate the travel time of vehicles. Model, if run on quantum computer can simulate the traffic in vast areas in real time. Proposed model was verified against the cellular automata model. Finally, application of quantum microscopic traffic models for ambulance vehicles was taken into consideration.

Opis:
The linear travel-time interpolation algorithm is improved by the method of ray tracing based on finite difference scheme of eikonal equation. It can simulate the more complex medium. Using the algorithm to calculate travel-time and paths of tracing rays, it is more rapid and accurate than the other conventional methods. The linear travel-time interpolation ray tracing algorithm has a drawback: rays cannot go round the low velocity area if the launching point, the receiving point and the low velocity area distribute on the same column (row). Aiming at the drawback, an improved algorithm is proposed on the basis of researching reconstruction theories. The given algorithm adopts a cross-scanning strategy to carry out forward processing and uses discrete points as the secondary sources to simplify backward processing. The numerical simulation experiments show that the rays can go round the low velocity areas located in the same column (row) of the launching points and the receiving points. Rays scan over the global region only once.

We consider the problem of using real-time floating car data to construct vehicle travel time prediction models meant to be used as input to routing algorithms for finding the fastest (time-shortest) path in the traffic network. More specifically we target the on-line car navigation systems. The travel time estimates for such a system need to be computed efficiently and provided for all short segments (links) of the roads network. We compare several fast real-time methods such as last observation, moving average and exponential smoothing, each combined with a historical traffic pattern model. Through a series of large-scale experiments on real-world data we show that the described approach yields promising results and conclude that specific prediction function form may be less important than a proper control of bias-variance trade-off (achieved by historical and real-time models combination). In addition, we consider two different settings for testing the prediction quality of the models. The first setting concerns measuring the prediction error on short road segments, while the second on longer paths through the traffic network. We show the quality and model parameters vary depending on the assessment method.

W artykule przedstawiono model ruchu w mieście w 4 wariantach natężenia ruchu. Przeprowadzono dwugodzinne symulacje ruchu na sieci ulic miasta Wrocławia przy utrzymywanej w ruchu liczbie pojazdów 5, 10, 20 oraz 30 tysięcy. Analizowano wpływ liczby pojazdów w sieci drogowej na długość czasu postoju na światłach, jazdy z prędkością ograniczoną przez gęstość ruchu oraz jazdy z prędkością swobodną. Wykazano, że wraz ze wzrostem obciążenia sieci drogowej pojazdami w ruchu rośnie czas trwania przejazdu, a maleją średnia długość trasy i średnia prędkość. Zwiększenie liczby pojazdów w symulacji z 5 do 30 tysięcy skutkuje ponad trzykrotnym zwiększeniem średniego czasu, w którym prędkość poruszającego się pojazdu jest ograniczona przez gęstość ruchu. O 40% wzrósł czas oczekiwania na skrzyżowaniach w wariancie maksymalnego natężenia w porównaniu z wariantem minimalnego ruchu, co oznacza, że nie sygnalizacja świetlna jest przyczyną powstających zatorów drogowych, ale gęstość ruchu wyrażona liczbą pojazdów na kilometr drogi.
The article presents 4 traffic modelling variants in the city in. Conducted a two-hour simulation of traffic in the city based of the road network of the city of Wroclaw. The number of vehicles changed from 5 to 30 thousand. It was analyzed the influence of the number of vehicles on the road network on share time stop at traffic lights, driving at a speed limited by the density of traffic and driving at a free flow. It has been shown that with the increase of network load of road vehicles in traffic increases the duration of the journey, and decreases the average route length and average speed. Increasing the number of vehicles in the simulation of 5 to 30,000 results in an increase of over three times the meantime, wherein the speed of moving vehicle traffic density is limited. About 40% increase a waiting time at intersections in S3 variant in comparison with the S0 which means that no traffic lights is generating congestionbut the density of traffic flow.

Opis:
Unexpected delay on freeways is the prime cause of dissatisfaction in road users. Increasing traffic, adverse environmental conditions, accidents, time, season, location and many more factors influence travel time and cause delay. There is no direct method to estimate delay. It is calculated from trip time estimates. Thus, it is a very big challenge for transportation professionals to develop a model that accurately estimates the trip time for a trip at a particular time, by a specific mode of transport. Subsequently, the reliability of the delay calculated from those trip time estimates is often doubtful. Further, the measurement of delay using the trip time data is another big thing. This paper is a step toward measuring the delay in an accurate way using travel time reliability measures. The study was conducted on the two modes of public transportation (City bus and Auto) in an urban corridor of length 16.3 km, in Hyderabad city, India. In this study, a license plate survey was conducted for data collection, travel time-based statistical analysis was employed for estimation of trip time and by making use of travel time measures, the delay was measured. The approach was validated graphically to portray its accuracy.

Opis:
Travel time estimation for freeways has attracted much attention from researchers and traffic management departments. Because of various uncertain factors, travel time on a freeway is stochastic. To obtain travel time estimates for a freeway accurately, this paper proposes two traffic sensor location models that consider minimizing the error of travel time estimation and maximizing the collected traffic flow. First, a dynamic optimal location model of the mobile sensor is proposed under the assumption that there are no traffic sensors on a freeway. Next, a dynamic optimal combinatorial model of adding mobile sensors taking account of fixed sensors on a freeway is presented. It should be pointed out that the technology of data fusion will be adopted to tackle the collected data from multiple sensors in the second optimization model. Then, a simulated annealing algorithm is established to find the solutions of the proposed two optimization models. Numerical examples demonstrate that dynamic optimization of mobile sensor locations for the estimation of travel times on a freeway is more accurate than the conventional location model.

Sustainable mobility is a priority for transport systems in urban areas. Contemporary planning of transport systems assumes an increase in the role of public transport in everyday trips. To increase the share of trips using public transport, it is essential to improve the accessibility of public transport stops. The accessibility of such stops depends primarily on the distance between the trip origin and the stop. Many factors influence the distance that passengers are willing to travel. This paper discusses the relationship between the access time to the bus stop and travel time. To study such a relationship, various statistical methods may be applied. This paper presents the results of the analysis performed based on the data on trips made by inhabitants of Bielsko-Biała, gathered during the building of its transport model.

Travel time is a fundamental measure in any transportation system. With the development of technology, travel time can be automatically collected by a variety of advanced sensors. However, limited by objective conditions, it is difficult for any sensor system to cover the whole transportation network in real time. In order to estimate the travel time of the whole transportation network, this paper gives a system of linear equations which is constructed by the user equilibrium (UE) principle and observed data. The travel time of a link which is not covered by a sensor can be calculated by using the observed data collected by sensors. In a typical transportation network, the minimum number and location of sensors to estimate the travel time of the whole network are given based on the properties of the solution of a systems of linear equations. The results show that, in a typical network, the number and location of sensors follow a certain law. The results of this study can provide reference for the development of transportation and provide a scientific basis for transportation planning.

The paper discusses medical transport in Poland. An ambulance was defined and the way in which emergency medical services in Poland were operated. In the further part of the paper an analsis of the research related to the registration of travel times of specialized vehicles such as ambulances was shown.

Artykuł przedstawia wnioski z badań czasów przejazdu dla połączeń Warszawy z głównymi ośrodkami wszystkich województw. Badania te obejmowały okres 50 lat, od 1965 do 2015 roku. Potwierdzają one istotny wpływ zmian w infrastrukturze kolejowej na skrócenie bądź wydłużenie czasu przejazdu. Poprawa stanu infrastruktury oraz wprowadzenie na głównych trasach nowego taboru sprawiły, że czasy przejazdu uzyskiwane w 2015 roku są dla wszystkich połączeń krótsze niż wartości średnie 50-letnie. Ponadto dla połączeń (w obu kierunkach) z Warszawy do Gdańska, Katowic, Krakowa, Olsztyna, Opola, Poznania, Rzeszowa, Szczecina i Wrocławia obecne czasy są najkrótsze w historii.
The results of travel time study for connections from to Warsaw to the main cities in provinces have been presented in the article. These studies included a period of 50 years from 1965 to 2015 years. They confirm the significant impact of changes in the railway infrastructure for shortening or lengthening travel time. The improvement of infrastructure state and implementation of new railway vehicles at the main routes caused that travel times achieved in 2015 year for all connections are shorter than average values for 50 year period. Moreover, the present travel times for connections from Warsaw to Gdansk, Krakow, Katowice, Olsztyn Opole, Poznan, Rzeszow, Szczecin and Wroclaw (in both directions) are the shortest in history.

An important role of the railways at the moment is to increase the speed of passenger traffic. This task is because of inter-national agreements as well as the need to keep the competitiveness of railways in the transport market. The paper presents the opportunity to increase travel speed of passenger transport with using tilting body vehicles. For the selected section of the ŽSR lines travel times for vehicles with classic designs and tilting body vehicles were calculated. From their comparison a remarkable reduction of driving times showed up. Energy consumption of classical design vehicles and Pendolino type trains on the existing section of Slovak railway, considering the current speed limits and the theoretical speed limits for trains with tilting technology was assessed.

Railway transportation is a critical component of countries' transportation sectors worldwide. This is because, in the movement of goods and persons, railway transport networks have a clear advantage over other modes of transportation. However, despite the positive outlook, Nigeria's railway transportation networks have faced several challenges to the country's economic and social development, especially in overpopulated cities like Lagos State. The study population consists of 125 railway transportation users in Lagos state. The data were analyzed using descriptive, multiple and Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The study revealed that safety is the highest predictor of customer patronage amongst railway commuters in Lagos state. This is followed by price, travel time and service quality. This indicates that if the safety of the railway commuters (customers) is guaranteed, they will continue to use the train regardless of the service quality being offered to them. The study recommended that Public-Private Partnership (PPP) should be encouraged in running the affairs of the Nigerian railways for increased efficiency and that industry players need to be proactive by ensuring adequate professionalism in the sector and putting in place modern railway transport facilities.

Building new roundabouts in the city centers become more and more common. Our paper is focused on evaluation of current state of traffic organization at the chosen roundabout based on the transport survey. The chosen roundabout is located on streets Tajovského, Švernova and Nad plážou in the city of Banská Bystrica, near the department store Lidl. Th e roundabout is a connection point between Podlavice neighborhood, Skubín neighborhood, Fončorda neighborhood on south and the city center. For a correct analysis of the traffic situation, a comprehensive assessment of the roundabout and its link to the surrounding traffic junctions is necessary. Once this analysis has been made, it is possible to create a transport model and then make various simulations. We are able to assess in appropriate way a current traffic situation at the roundabout and test a new proposal of roundabout solution, using simulation soft ware.

We analyse the factors used for assessing groundwater intrinsic vulnerability to pollution in the mean residence time estimation method, providing a final vulnerability evaluation. The following factors were analysed: depth to shallow groundwater, effective precipitation infiltration coefficient, terrain inclination, volumetric water content of soils and rocks in the unsaturated zone and volumetric water content of the topsoil. GIS surveys were performed for two geomorphologically diverse regions: a highland piedmont and a lowland plain in Poland (Central Europe). In both cases, groundwater had spatially diverse vulnerability to contamination. The research method used relied on determining the percentage participation of the area with particular values of the parameters analysed in areas of different degrees of vulnerability. Knowledge of the extent and distribution of variability of the parameters analysed in areas of particular degrees of vulnerability helps explain the causes of spatial variation in groundwater intrinsic vulnerability to contamination in given areas.

Internet oferuje wiele wyszukiwarek połączeń komunikacyjnych dla różnych typów transportu. Artykuł przedstawia porównanie dostępności czasowej Biblioteki Narodowej w Warszawie z obszaru całego miasta, wyznaczonej na podstawie danych pozyskanych dzięki dwóm najpopularniejszym serwisom internetowym obliczającym czas podróży: jakdojade.pl oraz Google Maps. Choć oba serwisy korzystają z takich samych danych udostępnianych przez ZTM, algorytmy ich przetwarzania oraz obliczania czasu przejazdu są różne. W badaniu wzięto pod uwagę podróż transportem publicznym w dwóch różnych porach dnia powszedniego, uwzględniając godzinę porannego i popołudniowego szczytu komunikacyjnego. Dane czasowe zostały pozyskane automatycznie w postaci punktów o odstępach jednokilometrowych. Uwzględniono również istnienie obszarów wyłączonych, czyli takich, których pokonanie komunikacją czy pieszo nie jest możliwe. Pozyskane dane poddano interpolacji, wykorzystując w tym celu metodę IDW. Jest to najlepsza metoda dla przetwarzania danych tego typu. Analiza dokładności w oparciu o punkty kontrolne wykazała błędy absolutne nieprzekraczające 4 minut dla danych z obu portali. W artykule przedstawiono mapy dostępności komunikacyjnej Biblioteki Narodowej w Warszawie dla danych pozyskanych z każdej z badanych wyszukiwarek oraz wizualizacje różnic między nimi. Podjęto próbę interpretacji tych różnic oraz oceny wiarygodności i użyteczności serwisu jakdojade.pl oraz Google Maps z perspektywy użytkownika – pasażera pojazdów ZTM.
The Internet offers many various public transport route planners. The paper presents a comparison of the availability time of the National Library in Warsaw, from any place in the city, as determined on the basis of data obtained by the two most popular web services that calculates travel time for public transport: jakdojade.pl and Google Maps. Although both services use the same data provided by the ZTM, the applied algorithms, ways of processing and calculating travel times are different. The study took into account the journey by public transport at two different times: at morning and afternoon rush hours. Data have been obtained automatically with the 1x1-kilometer grid. Excluded areas were also taken into consideration. The data were interpolated using the IDW interpolation method. This is the best method for processing such kind of data. As the result of the accuracy analysis, performed with the use of independent checkpoints, absolute errors have been calculated for both services. Their values do not exceed 4 minutes. The paper presents the maps of time accessibility of the National Library in Warsaw for the data obtained from each of the tested web services and visualizations of differences between them. The paper attempts to interpret these differences and to assess the reliability and usability jakdojade.pl and Google Maps from a user perspective – the ZTM passenger.

Urban traffic congestion created by unsustainable transport systems and considered as a crucial problem for the urbanised areas provoking air pollution, heavy economic losses due to the time and fuel wasted and social inequity. The mitigation of this problem can improve efficiency, connectivity, accessibility, safety and quality of life, which are crucial parameters of sustainable urban mobility. Encouraging sustainable urban mobility through smart solutions is essential to make the cities more liveable, sustainable and smarter. In this context, this research aims to use spatiotemporal data that taxi vehicles adequately provide, to develop an intelligent system able to predict traffic conditions and provide navigation based on these predictions. GPS (Global Positioning System) data from taxi are analysed for the case of Thessaloniki city. Trough data mining and map-matching process, the most appropriate data are selected for travel time calculations and predictions. Several algorithms are investigated to find the optimum for traffic states prediction for the specific case study concluding that ANN (Artificial Neural Networks) outperforms. Then, a new road network map is created by producing spatiotemporal models for every road segment under investigation through a linear regression implementation. Moreover, the possibility to predict vehicle emissions from travel times is investigated. Finally, an application with a graphical user interface is developed, that navigates the users with the criteria of the shortest path in terms of trip length, travel time shortest path and “eco” path. The outcome of this research is an essential tool for drivers to avoid congestion spots saving time and fuel, for stakeholders to reveal the problematic of the road network that needs amendments and for emergency vehicles to arrive at the emergency spot faster. Besides that, according to an indicator-based qualitative assessment of the proposed navigation system, it is concluded that it contributes significantly to environmental protection and economy enhancing sustainable urban mobility.

The paper presents the NaviExpert’s Community Traffic technology, an interactive, community–based car navigation system. Using data collected from its users, Community Traffic offers services unattainable to earlier systems. On the one hand, the current traffic data are used to recommend the best routes in the navigation phase, during which many potentially unpredictable traffic-delaying and traffic-jamming events, like unexpected roadworks, road accidents, or diversions, can be taken into account and thereby successfully avoided. On the other hand, a number of istinctive features, like immediate location of various traffic dangers, are offered. Using exclusively real-life data, provided by NaviExpert, the paper presents two illustrative case studies concerned with experimental evaluation of solutions to computational problems related to the community-based services offered by the system.

Spatial accessibility is one of fundamental problems of geography, and transport geography in particular. It is one of the key factors afecting the ability to use certain services by the residents of a given area. Therefore, it is important to develop appropriate methods for the analysis of spatial accessibility. This paper describes a methodology for analyzing spatial accessibility in urban areas using a hexagonal grid combined with a network analysis. The proposed methodology is applied to the city of Toruń, Poland. Spatial distribution of accessibility to selected public amenities is analyzed and areas of high and low accessibility are identified. Finally, a prototype of a novel web-based system is proposed to allow citizens and city oficials to perform custom analysis based on individual preferences.

The most desired journey by human being is definitely travel through time. For centuries, people dream about time travel, to be able to go back and fix mistakes of the past. But there are many complications associated with time travel - starting from technological aspects ending with the philosophical paradoxes. Yet, is time travel possible from the technological and philosophical perspectives? How to solve the paradoxes of time travel? It should be noted that realisation of time travel leads not only to the discovery of the nature of time, but also to the understanding how much is unknown about it. In this paper, probability of time travel and solutions to paradoxes will be critically analysed from philosophical perspectives.

Presentism usually holds that only present entities exist. In contrast to presentism, eternalism holds that past, present, and future entities all exist. According to some philosophers, presentism is intuitively incompatible with time travel. In this paper, I defend the compatibility between presentism and time travel by arguing for a plausible account of causation in the presentist framework. To achieve my goal, I respond to an objection to presentist time travel that is based on the nonexistence of the past: the Causation Objection. According to the Causation Objection, causal relations between objects at different times are necessary for time travel, but these are impossible for presentists. I evaluate a possible reply based on a non-relational account of causation and show that this reply is not satisfying. Subsequently, I put forward a fact-based account of causal relation. I argue that presentists could accept facts instead of events as causal relata, thus establishing causal relations. As all facts about the past, the present, and the future exist in the present, we could explain how backward causation works and describe the discrepancy between personal time and external time in presentist time travel; in this way, I argue, we could vindicate the compatibility between presentism and time travel.

Rozkład przestrzenny jest drugim etapem w budowie czterostopniowego klasycznego modelu podróży, w którym to dokonuje się rozdzielenia podróży pomiędzy rejony transportowe. Na tym etapie modelowania liczbę podróży pomiędzy rejonami wyznacza się najczęściej za pomocą modelu grawitacyjnego. Obecnie w Gdańsku budowany jest nowy transportowy model symulacyjny miasta, oparty na programie VISUM. W artykule przedstawione zostaną problemy, które napotkano podczas prac nad modelem, a także alternatywny sposób podejścia, w którym to najpierw dokonano podziału zadań przewozowych, a następnie rozkładu przestrzennego podróży. W dalszej części przedstawione zostaną doświadczenia w modelowaniu czasu podróży zebrane podczas prac nad modelem, w którym kluczowym aspektem było prawidłowe ustalenie prędkości swobodnych, a także dobór funkcji oporu odcinka opisującej spadek prędkości w miarę wzrostu natężenia ruchu na danym odcinku sieci.
Trip distribution is a second of the four-step model, in which the trips are assigned to the transportation zones mostly using gravity model. Presently in Gdansk, the new transport model is being built in the VISUM program. In this article not only the encountered problems has been shown but also an alternative approach for the trip distribution problem in which the mode choice step had been switched before the trip distribution. In the next point, the experience acquired in the trip time modelling, which included the problem of the time loses on the intersections has been presented. The experience in the modelling of travel time, collected during the work on the model, which has been a key aspect to determine the correct free flow speed, as well as the choice of the section describing the volume delay function describing the increase of the speed of traffic on a given network segment have been shown.
