Opis:
The purpose of this study is to identify how the sustainability and digital transition influence banks. The main thesis can be expressed as follows: sustainability transition and digital transition are changing the role and function of banks, especially the products and services offered by banks. Banks are one of main actors of a broader, multi-level governance designed to support the transition to smart, efficient and low carbon economy. The framework’s structure is based upon the multi-level perspective on socio-technical transitions created by F.W. Geels. The first section of this paper presents the most popular approaches to the problem at hand, as reported in professional literature. Section two presents characteristics of the various actors involved in the anticipated transformation of the economy. The third section discusses the changing roles and frameworks of banks associated with the notion of the broader concept of sustainability and digitalization.

In the period 1950–2020, international migration in Europe changed significantly. One of the most characteristic features was the change in net migration from negative to positive. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Poland belonged to the minority of countries in this respect – that is, it experienced strong emigration but only minor immigration. However, migration in Poland has also been changing. In the second decade of this century, the outflow of people has weakened, the inflow of migrants has increased and the migration balance has become positive. I analyse these phenomena from the theoretical perspective of the migration transition that was experienced in the second half of the twentieth century by most countries in Western, Northern and Southern Europe. I attempt to answer the question of whether the latest migration phenomena prove that this transition is also occurring in Poland. In conclusion, I argue that the available to-date evidence provides an affirmative answer to this question.

Two major approaches have dominated the field of the sociology of development: theories of modernization, which focus on developed countries, and theories of development, which concentrate on Latin America, Africa, and East Asia. The social transformations in China, Russia, and the other European former socialist countries since 1989, however, have challenged both the traditional approaches of Sociology of Development with a series of new issues: how should one evaluate the various pathways to development in different countries and regions? how should one examine the state–society relationship in social development and transition? how can one deal with the social inequality in the process of development? These topics have expanded the scope of the Sociology of Development and provided an opportunity to construct new theories. I suggest that, in response to the practice conditions of ongoing socioeconomic transformation, new theories of transition, in addition to theories of modernization and theories of development, is the imperative need in the field of the sociology of development.

The paper deals with the problems of boundary layer modelling in turbomachinery applications, where various mechanisms are present, especially under the conditions of upstream wakes. The paper presents a review of recent achievements in interpretation of by-pass, wake induced and separation induced transition processes as well as the discussion of most important aspects of transition modelling. This review is complemented by physical explanation of transition phenomena based on the recent literature data as well as on the results of numerical and experimental investigations performed at the Institute of Thermal Machinery. The two test cases, i.e. steam turbine blade profile N3-60 and gas turbine blade profile T106A are used as a basis for the discussion of applicability of modern transition models.
Artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniom modelowania warstwy przyściennej w maszynach przepływowych, w których występują różne mechanizmy przejścia laminarnoturbulentnego, w tym obecne zwłaszcza w warunkach napływających śladów. W artykule przedstawiono przegląd najnowszych osiągnięć w interpretacji przejścia typu bypass, indukowanego śladem i oderwaniem warstwy przyściennej oraz przedyskutowano najważniejsze aspekty modelowania przejścia laminarno-turbulentnego. The research paper presents institutional systems of economies in the following transforming countries: Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. The article aims at indicating the changes which have taken place in informal institutions' structures since the early nineties. It also attempts to determine how informal institutions are supporting formal institutions. Heading towards building new institutional systems, transforming countries face a barrier of slowly evolving informal institutions. A mismatch between institutional structures can be noticed in transforming countries. Low level of trust in people, resistance to new ideas, strong attachment to traditional behavioural patterns and excessive role of “connections”, relatively low level of self-expression, high expec-tations towards the state and its welfare functions, and low social activity within the society, can be observed. The institutional changes in informal components have been presented using data from World Values Survey, CEPII and G.Hofstede research.

Opis:
Poland, traditionally a country of emigration, started to record a positive migration balance in recent years. However, thus far, no forecast has indicated the possibility of Poland’s transition from a net sending to a net receiving regime. This study indicates the theoretical underpinnings of such a change and provides an international migration projection. To this end, we refer to the historical experiences of other European countries, more advanced in terms of the Demographic Transition (DT), Second Demographic Transition (SDT) and Migration Transition. We develop a deterministic migration projection of four types of flow (the in- and out-migration of nationals and foreign citizens) up until 2060, combined with the United Nations’ Bayesian probabilistic models of fertility and mortality projections. The results show that Poland will evolve from having a net sending to having a net receiving status around 2030–2034. The combined effect of migration flows on population ageing will not be significant but, in the long run, when considered separately, the four types of flow will have non-negligible, though opposite, effects: the outflows will contribute to population rejuvenation, while the inflows will accelerate population ageing.

The authors set out to determine if the convergence theory passes the test in 25 transition economies. On the basis of statistical data for the years 1991-2004, using an econometric model, they analyze the influence of GDP per employee on the growth of labor productivity. They also consider other factors with an influence on sustainable economic growth. Considering the significant heterogeneity of the analyzed economies in terms of market reforms and institutional conditions, the authors divided the sample into three relatively homogenous groups: 10 new European Union member states excluding Cyprus and Malta; 12 CIS countries; and five Southern and Eastern European economies. The authors evaluated conditional convergence in individual groups of economies, concluding that economies with lower GDP per employee at the start of transition were characterized by a higher rate of growth for most of the analyzed period. GDP per employee primarily depended on investment in physical and human capital, the share of government spending in GDP and inflation. Moreover, the analysis showed that convergence processes in individual countries led to converging long-term economic growth rates, which were positive rather than neutral, contrary to the classic convergence theory.

Cambodia suffered dramatically from the Khmer Rouge regime in 1975 to 1979 as well as from Vietnam’s invasion and the following civil war till 1989. Both caused enormous destruction, not only of infrastructure, educational institutions, the financial and health system, but – even more importantly – to its human capital. After 1989 Cambodia’s economic transformation started but is insufficient until now. The conception of a market order – introduced by Walter Eucken (1952/90) - may be a helpful approach to improve the economic and social situation in the country. But before constitutive or regulative principles of a market order can be implemented in Cambodia successfully some basic political problems must be solved. They are defined already by North / Wallis / Weingast (2009) as rule of law for the elite, civil society, and consolidated control of the military. Additionally, there are further obstacles which must be drawn into consideration like cultural differences etc. It is the aim of this paper to describe the political and economic situation in Cambodia briefly. Then the necessary preconditions for sustainable development in the country will be introduced. Subsequently an economic policy in line with the market order conception will be recommended and further obstacles will be discussed, at least.

Theoretical models proposed in the literature for the deflagration-to- detonation transition (DDT) in cast explosives are evaluated for primary explosives (complex compounds) in this work. The one-dimensional model of burning (deflagration), consistent with the classical Chapman-Jouguet theory and a model of burning under the conditions of zero mass velocity behind the flame front are presented, and the physical phenomena accompanying the accelerating wave of flame in solid explosives are described. The results of calculations taken from the literature are presented for the cast high explosive (pentolite). The model of acceleration of the deflagration wave was used to estimate the time and distance at which the process of burning leads to the emergence of a shock wave in primary explosives. The influence of burning rate and the physical properties of an explosive on the distance of deflagration to detonation transition is analysed.

Research background: Entrepreneurship issues in the transition economies have attracted growing attention from scholars in recent years. However, the debate over the value of entrepreneurship in reinforcing structural change is still incomplete. The need for a more thorough approach is noticeable, taking into account drivers which determine entrepreneurial activity in the transition economies. The findings may be useful for recognising opportunities and threats of the development of these economies. Purpose of the article: This paper extends research on entrepreneurship in the transition economies by considering drivers of entrepreneurial activity. The aim of the paper is to investigate what drivers have their consequences for entrepreneurial activity in the Visegrad countries. As the Visegrad countries represent a unique context, because they faced a similar structure at the beginning of the transition process, a valuable insight can be gained by focusing on them. Methods: Hypothesis development is based on the literature review. Fixed effects panel regression was employed for hypothesis testing. Panel data consists of 440 observations for the Visegrad countries for the 2004-2014 period. To control for autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity, Durbin-Watson test and Wald statistic were used, respectively. Findings & Value added: This paper contributes to the existing literature by presenting an analysis of drivers having their impact on entrepreneurial activity in the Visegrad countries. It provides new insights on understanding of the entrepreneur-ship issues in the transition economies. The main finding is that entrepreneurial activity in the Visegrad countries is determined significantly by the economy structure and human capital. However, the significance and the intensity of these effects are different. The findings may be interesting for policymakers in particular. Shifting from general entrepreneurship support towards a focus on promoting entrepreneurial behaviour among high-skilled workers should be considered. Fostering networking, collaboration and internalisation should be regarded for knowledge transfer and spillover enhancement.

Advancements in computer technology that have occurred in recent decades have enabled an intensive development in cartographic methods for direct representation of phenomena dynamics. Even with the appearance of ever more advanced technical solutions, the theoretical basis still needs supplementing. The previous cartographic literature emphasises the importance of congruence and isomorphism principles preservation that aims at increasing the effectiveness of dynamic displays. Nevertheless, it is frequently the case that discontinuous phenomena are depicted with the use of smooth transitions. For this reason, it is vital that experimental research should lead to defining which representation methods are appropriate for a given type of content. Our study was focused on the cartographic design of scene transitions in animated maps. Two main conclusions of the research indicate that 1) mode of transition influences the interpretation of the content of cartographic animation depicting discrete changes, 2) maps executed in a smooth mode demonstrate lower effectiveness when compared with animations using an abrupt and abrupt with decay effect transitions.

This paper presents the results of research of influence of degree and number of polynomial terms of railway transition curves (TCs) on their dynamical properties. The research performed for needs of this work are planned numeric tests. The search for the proper shape means the evaluation of the curve properties based on chosen dynamical quantity and generation of such shape with the use of mathematically understood optimisation methods. For the needs of this work advanced vehicle model, dynamical track-vehicle and vehicle-passenger interactions as well as optimisation methods were exploited. The subject of the analysis are odd degree polynomial transition curves of the 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th degree. For each degree of the polynomial a range of acceptable number of polynomial terms was determined. One dynamical quantity - minimum of integral of vehicle body lateral acceleration - being the results of simulation of railway vehicle advanced model is exploited in the determination of quality function (QF).

The text is an analysis of the Polish premiere of Tony Kushner's drama Angels in America. The drama, staged in 1995 as Angels of America at the Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdańsk, directed by Wojciech Nowak, has not made it into the history of Polish political theatre. However, the testimonies of its reception today allow for a complex analysis of the entanglement of political theatre in the so-called political transition. With the help of the category of “normality”, I am trying to expose the meandering paths of emancipation in the Polish theatre of the 1990s - the time of transition.

Opis:
In this paper we investigate empirically the relationship between globalization and human development in post-transition countries using annual panel data for the 1971-2010 period. We show that there exists a positive and statistically significant relationship between globalization and human development in the case of unconditional regressions. This relationship remains positive and signifi-cant once the process of European and regional integration is controlled for. However, when differences in the level of economic development are taken into account the globalization variable loses its statistical significance.
