This article offers an art analysis of the collection of icons by the Estonian icon painter Pimen Sofronov housed in the Monastery of Chevetogne in Belgium. Sofronov’s icons found their way to this monastery in different ways. All of the seven icons were created in the 1930s, when he taught the orthodox icon painting and worked in various places in Europe and personally acquired an abundance of new knowledge. The author examines the development ofSofronov’s artistic language during these years and discusses the European artistic and cultural context of that time, which is essential to understanding his work. Despite his acquaintance with different cultures and traditions of icon painting, Sofronov remained true to his roots as can be seen in his icons in Chevetogne. Sofronov found his own way of developing and renewing the Old Believers’ icon painting tradition. This can also be perceived as a deeper understanding of the traditional Russian Old Believer icon painting.

Opis:
In the present paper we report on the observation and study of intense spontaneous THz emission from modulation-doped AlGaN/GaN heterostructure under conditions of heating of two-dimensional electron gas in lateral electric field. The experimental results are compared with the model of blackbody-like thermal emission of hot 2D electrons. Complementary transport measurements and theoretical simulation were carried out to determine the dependence of effective electron temperature on electric field. The role of non-equilibrium optical phonon accumulation is discussed.

Opis:
New composite materials were obtained based on chitosan iodide and organic dyes – methylene blue and fuchsine in fucorcin (Castellani liquid) – by using a simple synthetic procedure. The materials were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and visible and ultraviolet light spectroscopy. The dyes in the composites were distributed uniformly and did not form separate phases. These composites could form structured porous sponges and films and therefore be used in various fields of application. The materials displayed antibacterial activity against antibiotic resistant gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Opis:
We present the results of THz luminescence investigations in structures with Si-doped quantum wells and Be-doped GaAsN layers under strong lateral electric field. The peculiar property of these structures is the presence of resonant impurity states which arise due to dimensional quantization in quantum wells and due to built-in strain in GaAsN epilayers. The experimentally obtained THz emission spectra consist of the lines attributed to intra-center electron transitions between resonant and localized impurity states and to the electron transitions involving the subband states. Absorption of THz radiation and its temperature dependence was also studied in structure with tunnel-coupled quantum wells at equilibrium conditions and under electric field.
