CONVERSATIONAL NARRATIVE
GENERAL THEORY OF VERBAL HUMOR

SELF-TARGETING HUMOR
Opis:
Recent pragmatic research focuses on the issue of identity construction via humor. In this paper, we intend to investigate how could the General Theory of Verbal Humor (in Attardo 2001, henceforth GTVH) contribute to the analysis of humor as a means of identity construction. Among the six knowledge resources proposed by the GTVH we focus on target and script opposition. The first one helps us identify whose behavior our young informants consider incongruous and, at the same time, worth laughing at. The second one reveals the specific (and often implicit) norms and values shared by conversationalists. We illustrate our points using Greek conversational narratives coming from same-gender groups of young Greek males and females. We show that, in our data, conversationalists select targets either outside or inside their group. Special emphasis is given to self-targeting humor (henceforth STH) and its function as a discourse strategy used for identity construction. Previous research on this kind of humor has revealed that STH can be interpreted as an index of either lack or presence of self-confidence and self-esteem. Our data show that, by using STH, our interlocutors indirectly point to a positive self-image. In all cases, the target of humor reinforces the existing bonds among group members, while bringing the evaluative dimension of humor to the surface and revealing the group values. Finally, our analysis brings an interesting pragmatic difference to the surface. This difference is related to the effect of humor on the identities constructed: through humor directed at other people's behavior (in the cases of out- and in-group targets), the speaker eventually de-legitimizes those others, while, through self-targeting humor, the speaker aims at legitimizing him/herself and his/her own actions.

There are a large number of historical documents in libraries and other archives throughout the world. Most of them are written by hand. In many cases they exist in only one specimen and are hard to reach. Digitization of such artifacts can make them available to the community. But even digitized, they remain unsearchable, and an important task is to draw the contents in the computer readable form. One of the first steps in this direction is to recognize where the lines of the text are. Computational intelligence algorithms can be used to solve this problem. In the present paper, two groups of algorithms, namely, projection-based and tensor voting-based, are compared. The performance is evaluated on a data set and with the procedure proposed by the organizers of the ICDAR 2009 competition.

Aim. This research aims to theoretically characterize and empirically research the indicators of barriers and resources for journalists’ success in life through the prism of their professional scripts. The focus is on the axiological component of the professional script of media professionals. Methods. We used theoretical analysis of the psychological works aiming at studying journalists’ success in life, and such methodological instruments as the Lifetime Orienteering Test (Leontiev, 2000); an adapted version of James Crambo’s Purpose-in-Life Test (PIL); Leonard Maholiсk’s Personal Readiness for Change Questionnaire (1993), and Methodology Completeness of Life. Statistical correlation was analyzed with the use of Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results. The theoretical analysis and empirical data revealed the correlation between the indicators of sense-of-life orientations and the indicators of personal readiness for change, script settings, perceptions of self, others and life. The results identify psychological barriers, and allocate directions of development of the technologies for optimization of journalists’ success in life. Conclusions. The results of the study made it possible to distinguish priority values-goals and values-instruments, important in the construction of the architectonics of the axiological component of the journalists’ professional script. The correlation between indicators of journalists’ middle level life-sense orientations and indicators of personal change readiness empirically confirmed a claim that innovative readiness of journalists intensified the process of reaching success in life. Psychological barriers of the cognitive process were stated as script attitudes. The development of technologies for the psychological support of journalists was considered as a prospect for our future studies.

The offline handwritten text recognition is one of the most challenging tasks in document image analysis; our aim is to recreate the cultural importance of the Kannada Language writing tradition through the historical degraded manuscripts. In the present digital era, we need to protect and digitize the resources of our Indian culture and heritage by digitizing those manuscripts which are losing its status; the degraded manuscripts are influenced by weather condition. In this paper, we have attempted to identify and recognise the historical Kannada handwritten scripts of various dynasties; namely, Vijayanagara dynasty (1460 AD), Mysore Wadiyar dynasty (1936 AD), Vijayanagara dynasty (1400 AD) and Hoysala dynasty (1340 AD) by using the improved seam carving text line segmentation method with HOG feature descriptors. The average classification accuracy for different dynasties are computed. The LDA classifier is yielded 93.4%, K-NN classifier has yielded 92% and SVM classifier has 95.5%. Based on the experimentation, the SVM classifier has recorded good classification performance comparatively LDA and K-NN classifiers for historical Kannada handwritten scripts.

The proposal aims to highlight the semiotic elements of the discourse that refer to the symbolic ones of representations, and that transform the therapy in an exercise of professional dominion aimed to modify the perception of the self of the female patient through the subversion of specific emotional script. The mapping of the emotional scripts of shame and modesty, in their performative evolution, will be useful to demonstrate how and through what relational strategies the medicalization performs a gender violence which leads to exclude and self-stigmatise the sick woman, considered a “half woman”. The reflection that has its incipit in the ascertainment that the female body has been and keeps being a means of “male dominion” and object of “symbolic violence” as well as physical, and favors unexpected articulations related to a female body affected by breast or uterus cancer with often devastating effects on the woman’s self-perception. This proposal provides a reflection on the effects of experience of female cancer in the emotional sphere and in the gender relations of 36 Italian and stranger women. The research aims at discussing the role of medical therapy as a social practice of male domination that imposes a traditional representation in which female beauty is equivalent to the physical integrity and full functioning of specific attributes sexed (uterus that creates, breast that feeds). The focus of research is an analysis particularly focusing on the transformations of perception of body as Körper and the emotions which, cross-sectionally, constitutes the self-perception of Leib.

The term glocal has been used to describe phenomena that simultaneously blend both global and local elements (see Featherstone, Lash, & Robertson, 1995, p. 101). Nowhere is this more evident than in the existence of 3arabizi, itself a blended language composed of English and Vernacular Arabic, written in Latin letters but using arithmographemes, that is, numerals as letters to represent hard-to-transliterate sounds because they do not exist in English (see Bianchi, 2012).1 As part of a doctoral study investigating online language choice involving Arabic and English, this paper examines the unique stylistic and topical functions of 3 arabizi when compared with its linguistic forbears, that is, Arabic and English in a multilingual web forum. The findings indicate that 3arabizi is used for more informal, intimate and phatic communication than either Arabic or English, though these latter two languages or codes are not entirely formal in form and purpose either.

Opis:
There is a whole sequence of similarities between the process of developing an architectural design development and a film script. In both cases the author must cover a multistage road from the initial idea to the work’s materialization. In architecture, just like in film, hierarchy is obligatory: the relations between the client, the architect and the developer may be compared with the power set up between the producer, the script writer and the director. Just as a film is created in order to evoke a specific impression in the spectator, thus winning the public, so the aim of the art of building is a rational response to the client’s cultural needs. Both the script and the project have a codified way of notation, allowing to define the subsequent phases of the film’s and the building’s coming to life. Finally, both art domains refer to certain repeating cultural patterns in the realm of space, colour and master, allowing the public at large to decode and experience a film work, as well as buildings and cities. The author of the article analyzes parallels between the script and its realizations in the world of architecture on the examples of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona, the WTC Twin Towers in NYC and the Tjuvholmen Museum in Oslo, Norway.

The aim of this paper is to investigate new institutionalism, its trends and their application in the analysis of security and defence institutions. The research is based on an analysis of theoretical literature to explore a system of assumptions about new institutionalism. Different approaches have been examined, including historical, rational choice, and sociological approaches. Historical institutionalism can be applied to identify the usefulness of past decisions, policy choices, appropriate strategy choices, and specific acquisitions for future policymakers, whereas rational choice institutionalism allows us to determine the influence of security and defence institutions on actors and their choices, how actors use the institutional framework for their own benefit, and how actors’ choices influence the state policy. Finally, sociological institutionalism focuses on recognising actors’ cognitive scripts and the changes they undergo, as well as causes that influence and determine cognitive scripts. Defence institutions are based on a precise regulative and normative framework and cognitive scripts of the highest authorities. Therefore, the external framework and the particular political impact on the supranational level can cause changes on the national level. New institutionalism provides an important perspective on the specifics of security and defence policy, actors’ individual and collective goals, their strategies and interests as well as cognitive scripts.

Opis:
Wprowadzenie.
Introduction. Since the beginning of the 21st century, both in the social (public) space and in the latest subject literature, interest in the needs of people in the autumn of their life is experiencing a renaissance. This is expressed, among other things, by generativity (life-giving), understood primarily as the care for future of the following generations (often it is also a form self care and caring for the future of people in the immediate vicinity). One of the manifestations of generativity is the activation of the so-called generative script in the narrative. An example of such a structured story can be found e.g., in the trilogy written by Małgorzata Kalicińska (House by the Backwater (2006), Return to the Backwater (2007), Love over the Backwater (2008)). The character in whose creation the generative script has the great importance is Barbara, Małgorzata’s mother. Aim. The aim of this article is presentation of the category of generativity in contemporary literature, especially in the form of a family saga. Particular emphasis will be placed on the theoretical and practical aspects of implementing generativity in the narrative process of a person in the autumn of life. The text is also an encouragement to conducting regular research on the phenomenon of generativity in Polish literature, which is still lacking. Results. The article shows that focusing on the so-called phenomenon of generativity is achieved in many ways. Generativity manifests itself in the process of narration conducted from the perspective of people with life experience who have been affected by Gauguin’s syndrome. Three heroines of the story from above the backwater (Bronisława, Barbara, Małgorzata) share their experiences, observations, and thoughts (activating the generative script), showing, among other things, care for family and neighbours, but also indicate the importance (and consequences) of taking care of themselves and following their own needs.

Ever since, Terakowska was awarded numerous prizes; her books enjoyed good readership and were released many times. She earned wide recognition for her focus on the themes of a human lost in the world, seeking for inalienable values; often disabled or facing the end of his or her life. Terakowska’s works constitute an attempt at systemic recognition of human condition in entirety of its psychological, sociological and cultural complexity, thus forming a generative script. In this paper, description of a concept of cloud Storage age is offered. One of the most practical methods of storing required information to cloud storage is also considered. Method of creating screenshots is proposed. Theoretical research is carried out and there are justified advantages and disadvantages of different methods of storing information in social networks. The best technique of creating screenshots has been practically implemented. Problems that might come up while working with approach given in this article and its solutions are stipulated. There is analyzed a necessity of setting a zoom parameter which is to transfer after transmitting size value of the picture in social networks. In the article the parameter that specifies the width of the final image and clearly affects the quality of the image is also considered. There is analyzed the effectiveness of creating an information system that saves time for such information processes as tracking the photo and its comments.
