The aim of this paper is to compare pre-failure deformations of sand, obtained from a Cam-clay type elastic-plastic model, with experimental data. The experiments were performed in a modern triaxial apparatus, enabling local measurement of both vertical and lateral strains. The experimental programme is briefly described, then a slightly modified, Cam-clay type, elastic-plastic model of sand is presented. Predictions of this model, for different stress paths, are compared with respective experimental results, then extensive discussion of basic problems connected with elasto-plastic modelling of sand is presented. The aim of the discussion is to display some shortcomings of this type of modelling.

The paper presents numerical solution to the problem of the symmetri quasi-static large-strain expansion of a cylindrical cavity in sand. The boundary value problem is solved with the use of a constitutive equation of hypoplasticity calibrated for a particular sand. As the radius of the cavity increases, the stresses and the density on the cavity surface asymptotically approach limit values which correspond to a so-called critical state of the sand. The limit values depend on the initial stresses and the initial density. The solutions are compared with experimental results for the same sand available in the literature. A comparison is also made with numerical solutions obtained by other authors.

The paper presents the results of basic research on the influence of the properties of sand grains on electrical properties of water glass moulding sands. It shows electrical properties of the main component – sand grains, crucial to the kinetics of moulding sands heating, such as permittivity εr and loss factor tgδ. Measurements were carried out with the use of the perturbation method for silica, chromite and olivine sands of different mineral, chemical composition and particle size distribution, as well as for moulding sands with water glass grade 145. Analysis of the results of measurements of electrical properties shows that all moulding sands are characterized by a similar permittivity εr and loss factor tgδ. It was found that the electrical properties and the quantity and quality of other components may have a decisive influence on the effectiveness and efficiency of the microwave heating of moulding sands with sand grains. In determining the ability to efficiently absorb the microwave radiation for mixtures which moulding sands are, the impact of all components influencing their individual technological parameters should be taken into account.

Until now, the mould sand in general use in the foundry industry are based on bentonite, which resulted from the fact that a good recognition properties and phenomena associated with this material. Come to know and normalized content of montmorillonite and carbonates and their important role in the construction of bentonite, and mass properties of the participation of compressive strength or scatter. Halloysite is widely used in industry and beyond them. However, little is known about its use in the foundry in Poland and abroad. This article presents preliminary research conducted at the Foundry Department of Silesian University of Technology on this material. Will raise the question of the representation of this two materials, which contains information connected with history and formation of materials, their structure and chemical composition. In the research, the results of compressive strength tests in wet masses of quartz matrix, where as a binder is used halloysite and bentonite in different proportions.

The aim of this article is to compare experimentally determined strains of sand with theoretical calculations made on the base of the theory of hypoplasticity. During the study `Skarpa' sand was examined in the triaxial apparatus with local measurement of vertical and lateral strains. Results obtained were used to calibrate 8-parameter von Wolffersdorff model. Subsequently, the behaviour of loose and dense sandy samples subjected to different stress paths was predicted.

In the paper, presented are measurements of permittivity (εr) and dielectric loss factor (tgδ) of high-silica moulding sand, determined at 2.45 GHz by perturbation method on a stand of waveguide resonance cavity. Determined were electrical properties of the main component of moulding sands, i.e. high-silica base, critical for their heating kinetics. The measurements were carried-out for six kinds of high-silica sand with diverse grain size distribution. Analysis of the results indicates that both permittivity and loss tangent values are similar for all kinds of high-silica moulding sand. Irrespective of their grain size analysis, neither of the examined sandmixes shows susceptibility to action of 2.45 GHz microwave field. The presented results make a ground for developing a mathematical model of microwave heating of technological systems composed of moulding sand and foundry tooling.

The paper gives a short description of unstable behaviour of saturated sand under undrained monotonic loading. Constitutive model Nor Sand capable to describe static liquefaction is presented. The model is based on critical state soil mechanics and assumes associated flow rule. Hardening law incorporates the state parameter proposed earlier by Been and Jefferies. Results of numerical simulations of undrained element tests have been presented and discussed.

Sand occupies a great proportion of the cementitious matrix product and in particular mortars. Hence, the study of fine aggregates used for concrete and mortar in general, deserves to be objects of research including sand which has always been considered as inert material, whose role is exclusively physical. The study of mortars performances based on prepared sand to assess the effect of the type and rate of substitution of mineral additions pozzolana and blast furnace slag of a natural sand fine fraction (sieve diameter less than 0.16 mm) is seen as the main objective of the present experimental research work. The natural sand replaced size is less than 160 µm and for rheological reasons the maximum replacement rate of natural sand is limited to 10%. The results obtained show a significant improvement of the mechanical properties for the mortars based on the new activated sand. With regard to durability tests of HCl and H2SO4 acids chemical attacks, the substitution of the quartz by active mineral additions in the sand-size skeleton allows an advantageous reduction in loss of resistance up to 50% and a mass gain around 75%.

Opis:
Periodic inundation by sand is a very common feature of rocky coasts throughout the world. Even so, there have been few direct observations or experiments to investigate the role of sediments on intertidal rocky shores. We designed a field experiment in Mazatl´an Bay, Mexico, to test the initial impact and subsequent recovery of intertidal macrobenthic assemblages exposed to sand burial at two sites of varying wave exposure. Both sites supported different natural assemblages. Treatment plots for the addition of sediment and control plots (50×50 cm), separated by at least 1.5 m, were randomly placed across the mid-water tidal level. The initial response of the resident macrobenthos and the subsequent recolonization was monitored over a period of 95 days. The main effect of sediment deposition at both sites was mortality and removal of biota due to smothering. The recovery process was rapid and may in part have been the result of the mechanism by which the small, disturbed patches were recolonized. Most of the invertebrates colonized the patches as adults; several seaweeds exhibited vegetative growth as the major mechanism of colonization (e.g., Ulva lactuca Linnaeus, 1753, Amphiroa valonioides Yendo, 1902 and Chaetomorpha antennina (Borgensen) Kutzing, 1849). The rate of recovery varied between the sites, however. Recovery of species numbers proceeded quickly at the sheltered site (day 7), but took 95 days at the exposed site. In contrast, biomass reached control levels by day 45 at the sheltered site, but already by day 15 at the exposed site. By day 95, the assemblages recovered to 83.5% and 81% similarity with the controls at the sheltered and exposed sites respectively. Although differences in wave exposure could be very important in determining the different patterns of recovery at both sites, other biological processes may also play an important part.

The present study aims to valorize the waste and in particular the waste from the Fil-fila quarry. The main reason for choosing the waste from this quarry was the need to reduce the impact on the environment (by reducing stockpiling) and the raw material cost (economic reason). This study therefore consists in recovering this type of waste (discarded powder subject to weather changes) as sand in partial replacement of dune sand in the formulation of sand concrete with percentages of 5, 10, 15 and 20 %, by studying the behavior of these concretes in the fresh state (workability, density and occluded air) and the properties in the hardened state (compressive and tensile strength by bending, absorption by immersion, shrinkage and weight loss, chemical effect of HCl and H2SO4 solutions), and subsequently comparing the results obtained with reference samples (0%) based on ordinary sand. Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that the substitution of ordinary (dune) sand with marble waste sand provides acceptable results from the point of view of workability, strength and durability. These observations are likely to widen the field of applications of these sand concretes based on marble waste.

The paper presents the results of laboratory tests into the effects of moisture and the content of two types of bentonite on dielectric properties of moulding sand. The use of electromagnetic waves in foundry industry is becoming more and more popular, which provides to some extent alternatives to conventional drying methods. Experimental studies published so far have shown the validity of using microwaves for drying classic moulding sands with bentonite. However, these studies lack data on the effect of moisture or bentonite content in moulding sand on the real component ε' or imaginary component ε'' of the relative complex electrical permittivity. The presented results may become in the future the basis for the evaluation of the composition of moulding sands, taking into account the phenomena occurring under the influence of electromagnetic field, which directly translates into the quality of the castings made and may constitute an attempt to develop a mathematical model of electric properties of moulding sands.

Our scientific research is based on the monitoring of ions before and after filtration of groundwaters in the water plant of Velekinca in the municipality of Gjilan, Kosovo. Sandy filters are the most commonly used industrial filters in surface – and groundwater industries. The reason is their low construction cost and high processing capacity. In our scientific research, sand filters used in the plant do not have perfect filtration, so we can monitor results before filtration (BF) and after filtration (AF) by determining the concentration of some ions and molecules. The following average concentrations have described: Ca2+ (BF: 83.42, AF: 83.19) mg·dm–3, Mg2+ (BF: 35.59, AF: 34.35) mg·dm–3, Cl– (BF: 28.018, AF: 28.73) mg·dm–3, SO42– (BF: 42.76, AF: 44.46) mg·dm–3, HCO3– (BF: 410.9, AF: 404.81) mg·dm–3, A-HCl (BF: 6.73, AF: 6.63) ml-HCl, GH (BF: 19.94, AF: 19.62) °dH, CS (BF: 18.87, AF: 18.5) °dH and NO2– (BF: 0.0033, AF: 0.0022) mg·dm–3. Being scientific researchers in the field of water treatment technology, we have concluded that ions create an affinity for sand particles. They attach to each other by creating an ion-sand particle physical chain. According to our scientific research, sand filters are difficult to guarantee a high quality of water processing.

The results of researches of sorption processes of surface layers of components of sand moulds covered by protective coatings are presented in the hereby paper. Investigations comprised various types of sand grains of moulding sands with furan resin: silica sand, reclaimed sand and calcined in temperature of 700 oC silica sand. Two kinds of alcoholic protective coatings were used – zirconium and zirconium – graphite. Tests were performed under condition of a constant temperature within the range 30 – 35oC and high relative air humidity 75 - 80%. To analyze the role of sand grains in sorption processes quantitavie moisture sorption with use of gravimetric method and ultrasonic method were used in measurements. The tendency to moisture sorption of surface layers of sand moulds according to the different kinds of sand grains was specified. The effectiveness of protective action of coatings from moisture sorption was analyzed as well. Knowledge of the role of sand grains from the viewpoint of capacity for moisture sorption is important due to the surface casting defects occurrence. In particular that are defects of a gaseous origin caused by too high moisture content of moulds, especially in surface layers.

The results of investigations of the influence of the matrix grain sizes on properties of cores made by the blowing method are presented in the hereby paper. Five kinds of matrices, differing in grain size compositions, determined by the laser diffraction method in the Analysette 22NanoTec device, were applied in investigations. Individual kinds of matrices were used for making core sands in the Cordis technology. From these sands the shaped elements, for determining the apparent density of compacted sands and their bending strength, were made by the blowing method. The shaped elements (cores) were made at shooting pressures being 3, 4 and 5 atn. The bending strength of samples were determined directly after their preparation and after the storing time of 1 hour.

Opis:
The results of investigations of the reclamation of spent inorganic moulding sands from the warm-box technology are presented in the paper. The reclamation was performed in the prototype vibratory reclaimer: REGMAS. Water-glass with some organic additions influencing its knocking out properties was the binder of this spent sand. The following indices were applied for the reclaimability assessment: ignition loss, Na2O content, dusts amounts generated in the reclamation process, pH value of the reclaim as well as strength of moulding sands prepared with the reclaimed material, with the fresh sand and with the mixture: fresh sand-reclaim.

Celem przeprowadzonych badań było określenie możliwości regeneracji mieszaniny zużytych mas rdzeniowych pochodzących z procesów warm-box i technologii piasków otaczanych (Croninga), z dodatkiem zużytej masy klasycznej z bentonitem. Ze względu na rodzaj badanych mas zużytych poddano je regeneracji kombinowanej termiczno-mechanicznej, z wykorzystaniem stanowisk doświadczalnych zainstalowanych w Hali Maszyn Odlewniczych Wydziału Odlewnictwa AGH. Efekt regeneracji określany był poprzez badanie straty prażenia uzyskanego regeneratu, morfologii powierzchni ziaren oraz wytrzymałości na zginanie próbek mas formierskich, wykonanych z masy na osnowie regeneratu zagęszczanej metodą nadmuchiwania na stanowisku doświadczalnym PS-1 w technologii warm-box, po czasie odstawania próbek wynoszącym 1h.
The aim of the study was to determine the possibility of reclamation of used core sands mixtures originated from the processes of warm-box and croning with the addition of the classical sand with bentonite. Due to the nature of studied sands combined thermal and mechanical regeneration was performed, with the use of experimental stands installed at the Foundry Engineering Faculty of AGH University of Science and Technology. The effects of reclamatiom process were determined by studying the loss on ignition of the reclaim, as well as the particle surface morphology and a bending strength of samples prepared according to warm-box core molding sands technology, performed using the laboratory PS-1 blower.

Using the available analytical methods, including the determination of chemical composition using wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescent spectroscopy technique and phase composition determined using X-ray diffraction, microstructural observations in a high-resolution scanning microscope equipped with an X-ray microanalysis system as well as determination of characteristic softening and sintering temperatures using high-temperature microscope, the properties of particular chromite sands were defined. For the study has been typed reference sand with chemical properties, physical and thermal, treated as standard, and the sands of the regeneration process and the grinding process. Using these kinds of sand in foundries resulted in the occurrence of the phenomenon of the molding mass sintering. Impurities were identified and causes of sintering of a moulding sand based on chromite sand were characterized. Next, research methods enabling a quick evaluation of chromite sand suitability for use in the preparation of moulding sands were selected.

The plane strain behaviour of sand is studied using, previously proposed, incremental model describing its pre-failure deformations. Original model has been formulated for the tri-axial configuration, and then generalized for 3D conditions. This 3D model was subsequently adapted to study deformations of sand in the plane strain conditions, in the x1, x3 plane. There are three unknowns in such a configuration, namely the principal strains ε1 , ε3 and the principal stress σ2. Respective equations were derived, and then applied to study deformations of sand for chosen stress paths. The governing incremental equations were integrated numerically, and it was shown, for some loading paths, that σ2 depends linearly on the other principal stresses, so introduction of apparent Poisson's ratio is justified, as a kind of approximation. Subsequent analysis of deformations of sand was performed using this concept, as well as using full system of governing equations.

Numerical simulations of the behaviour of cohesionless sand were carried out using a discrete element method. A drained triaxial test of a homogeneous sand specimen under constant lateral pressure was modelled. To simulate the behaviour of sand, a 3D spherical discrete model YADE was used, enhanced by including rolling resistance in order to take into account grain roughness. Numerical results were directly compared with corresponding laboratory tests. The effects of lateral pressure, initial void ratio and micro-parameters on the global behaviour of sand were investigated.

The results of testing the strength properties of experimental ceramic materials containing spending moulding sand after initial mechanical reclamation as a material for subsequent layers of the stucco composition were presented. Tests were carried out on spent moulding sands from various foundry technologies, i.e. sand with furfuryl resin and sand with hydrated sodium silicate. The spent, agglomerated moulding sand has undergone a crushing process. Next, the required granular fractions used for individual layers of the stucco material were separated. Ceramic samples, in which the spent moulding sand was a substitute for fresh silica sand in successive layers of the stucco composition, were prepared. As a reference material, identical ceramic samples were used but with all layers made from the fresh silica sand. Samples prepared in this way were used to determine the bending strength of ceramic materials in the temperature range from 20 to 900ºC. The obtained values of the bending strength have demonstrated that spent moulding sand can be used in investment casting with no adverse effect on the strength of ceramic materials.

W artykule przedstawiono zarys metodyki pomiarów poboru mocy przez mieszarki masy formierskiej, z wykorzystaniem oryginalnego komputerowego systemu przeznaczonego do monitorowania i rejestracji chwilowych wartości napięć, prądów i mocy pobieranej przez odlewnicze maszyny i urządzenia o napędzie elektrycznym oraz analizatora jakości energii elektrycznej KEW 6310 firmy Kyoritsu. Powyższy system umożliwia kontrolę eksploatacyjnych parametrów tych urządzeń z uwzględnieniem energochłonności. Poprzez monitorowanie pracy mieszarek, możliwa jest również ocena procesu technologicznego sporządzania masy formierskiej. Metodykę pomiarów oraz sposób analizy wybranych wyników omówiono na przykładzie badań trzech różnych mieszarek: przemysłowej mieszarki krążnikowej, prototypowej mieszarki wirnikowej oraz nowoczesnej, wirnikowej mieszarki laboratoryjnej. Przeprowadzone badania potwierdziły funkcjonalność i przydatność zastosowanego w pomiarach mikroprocesorowego systemu. Umożliwia on określenie szeregu istotnych parametrów z punktu widzenia energochłonności pracy napędów mieszarki. Podstawowe, istotne aspekty monitoringu poboru mocy to: optymalizacja i kontrola procesu mieszania, uwzględniająca jakość sporządzanej masy formierskiej oraz ocenę poprawności pracy mieszarki. Podkreślenia wymaga również możliwość wykorzystania wyników pomiarów w optymalizacji konstrukcji i eksploatacji urządzenia. W badaniach potwierdzono wpływ zmiany wilgotności masy na wybrane parametry energetyczne w procesie mieszania masy.
A method is outlined that can be adopted for measuring the power demand by moulding sand mixers using a dedicated computer system enabling the monitoring and recording of instantaneous voltage and current levels and of power taken up by foundry machines and installations and Power Quality Analyser KEW 6310, Kyoritsu Company. This system allows the operational parameters of electric-powered devices to be effectively monitored taking into account the energy efficiency level. Monitoring of the machine operation gives also possibility of assessment of the moulding sand preparation processes. The methodology of measurements and processing of measurement data is explained using the example of investigation of three different mixers: industrial roller mixer (Simpson type), the prototype rotary mixer and modern rotary mixer for laboratory applications. Tests have confirmed the adequacy and good performance of the microprocessor system used in measurements, allowing the energy efficiency parameters of the mixer drive to be determined accordingly. The fundamental aspects involved in power demand monitoring include: optimization and control of the mixing process, taking into account the moulding sand quality and mixer performance. It has to be emphasised that the measurement results can be also utilised in optimisation of the machine’s constructional and operational features. Tests confirm that variations of moisture content in moulding sand can impact on selected power energy parameters in moulding sand mixing process.

The article presents the potential for using artificial neural networks to support decisions related to the rebonding of green moulding sand. The basic properties of the moulding sand tested in foundries are discussed, especially compactibility as it gives the most information about the quality of green moulding sand. First, the data that can predict the compactibility value without the need for testing are defined. Next, a method for constructing an artificial neural network is presented and the network model which produced the best results is analysed. Additionally, two applications were designed to allow the investigation results to be searchable by determining the range of values of the moulding sand parameters.

Molding material-related studies within the research activities concerning foundry technology have always been limited despite the significant effect of molding mixtures on the quality of cast parts. One reason behind this trend is the difficulty in interpreting the results of such complex systems like molds and cores. This paper provides a new possibility for studying the heat-absorption performance of materials used as molding media in metal casting processes. By further developing the Fourier thermal analysis method of cores and molds introduced by earlier studies, the investigation of unbonded sand has become available. The heat-absorption properties of the components can be hereby separated and studied respectively. Thermal analyses were performed on sphere-shaped resin-bonded cores with various binder levels as well as on unbonded sand samples. The temperature data collected from two points of the samples were then used for the calculation of the novel thermophysical properties. The results revealed not only quantitative but qualitative differences in the characteristics of the binder decomposition processes, providing a deeper understanding on the thermal behavior of molding materials. The outcome of the research provides more accurate data, which is the key for the improved simulation of casting processes.

Empirical relationships are developed for estimating the undrained critical shear strength based on experimental triaxial tests under monotonic loadings. The effect of fines content on the undrained shear strength is analyzed for different combinations of density states. The parametric study indicates that in terms of the soil void ratio and fines content properties, the undrained critical shear strength may increase, or decrease as the amount of fines content increases, consequently showing vulnerability to liquefaction influenced by the fines content percentage. A series of monotonic undrained triaxial tests have been undertaken on a reconstituted saturated sand-silt mixtures specimen. Beyond 30% of fines content, it is shown that a fraction of silt participates in the soil skeleton chain force. In this context, the concept of the equivalent intergranular void ratio may be an appropriate parameter to express the critical shear strength of the soil under investigation. This parameter is able to control the undrained shear strength of non plastic silt and sand mixtures for different density states.

Suction caissons are often used for the caissons of both offshore oil platforms and offshore wind power projects because of their advantages of simple construction, economical cost, and reusability. In this study, model tests were conducted in sand in order to investigate the effects of the caisson installation method on the penetration depth and the critical suction. Results of the test program showed that the method of changing the frequency of suction during different stages of the process can increase the penetration depth of the caisson. Combining with the deformation of the soil body inside and outside the caisson, the existing method for calculating the critical suction is modified, and the critical suction calculation equation of the discontinuous penetration test is proposed. Based on the test results, the calculation equation of the soil heave height can be more accurate predicted. The analysis results verify that the calculation method and the actual results are in good agreement.

Artificial beaches, i.e. places in the public sphere, are usually intended for recreation, located at water reservoirs, rivers, and their surface is naturally occurring or applied sand. The urban bathing beach located in Szczecin by the Deep lake has sand purchased and distributed on the beach by the Municipal Services Office in Szczecin (a few hundred ton). The beach is divided into sectors, a volleyball court is in one part, in the next section catering and sanitary facilities are located, and the remaining area is a place intended for sunbathing and playing games. The aim of the experiment was to assess the effects of different ways of using the beach on changes of microbiological properties of the sand. The tests were taken from the beach sand in May 2013 (first term examinations), and in September, after several months of use (the second term of examinations). The sand was collected near catering and sanitary sector (the first object) and from the area of the volleyball court (the second object), as well as the playground for children (the third object). The facilities were distanced from the shoreline of the lake by approx. 8 metres. The comparison included the number of heterotrophic bacteria, fungi and the detected presence of coliform bacteria, including Escherichia coli, bacteria of the genus Salmonella and eggs of intestinal parasites. In any of the objects, or the periods of time, eggs of intestinal parasites and bacteria of the genus Salmonella were detected. The presence of coliform bacteria including E. coli was found in the sand collected from a catering-sanitary zone, there was also the biggest number of bacteria and fungi. The number of heterotrophic bacteria and fungi was similar in samples of sand taken from the volleyball court and from the playground, in this sand there was no bacteria belonging to the E. coli species, although in several samples from the playground other bacteria belonging to the coliform genus were detected. To sum up, it is possible to state that the same sand used in various ways is gaining different microbiological characteristics. The values of the studied parameters differed significantly with regards to sand taken from the area of consumption, hygiene-sanitary activities and sand collected from the area of active leisure (the court and playground). These results indicate the need for a deliberate selection of location for sunbathing (children playing in the sand) away from the sites for culinary and sanitary purposes.

In the paper, presented are measurements of permittivity εr and loss factor tgδ of moulding sand depending on bonding material content, taken at 2.45 GHz by perturbation method on a stand of wave-guide resonance cavity. The determined electrical properties are crucial for kinetics of microwave heating of sandmixes containing water-glass as a binder. The measurements were taken for two sandmixes with various sand grains. The results indicate that, for a moulding sands containing water-glass, the relationship between loss factor value and binder concentration is linear. All the examined moulding sands, irrespective of their base, show a relatively high susceptibility to action of microwave field of frequency 2.45 GHz. The presented measurements make a ground for developing a mathematical model of microwave heating of the systems moulding sand-foundry tooling.

Finite Element Method FEM via commercially available software has been used for numerical simulation of the compaction process of bentonite-bonded sand mould. The mathematical model of soil plasticity which involved Drucker-Prager model match with Mohr Coulomb model was selected. The individual parameters which required for the simulation process were determined through direct shear test based on the variation of sand compactability. The novelty of this research work is that the individual micro-mechanical parameters were adopted depend on its directly proportional to the change of sand density during the compaction process. Boundary conditions of the applied load, roller and fixed constraint were specified. An extremely coarse mesh was used and the solution by time-dependent study was done for investigation of material-dependent behaviour of green sand during the compaction process. The research implemented also simulation of the desired points in sand mould to predict behaviour of moulding process, and prevent failure of the sand mould. Distance dependent displacement and distance-dependent pressure have been determined to investigate the effective moulding parameters without spent further energy and cost for obtaining green sand mould. The obtained numerical results of the sand displacement show good agreement with the practical results.

The article discusses the stagings of George Sand’s plays at Government Theatres of Warsaw in the 19th century (“Mauprat,” “Le marquis de Villemer,” “Académie de l’art poétique,” “Le mariage de Victorine”). The play that achieved the greatest success was “Mauprat,” staged almost continuously at the Teatr Wielki from 1856 to 1878. The success was due to the tastes of the Warsaw audience, sensitive to the achievements of the Romantic theatre and attached to their stage “stars”: in the case of “Mauprat,” the beloved “star” was Jan Królikowski, who frequently appeared as John Mauprat during the 20-year staging period. The article presents the traits of “Mauprat”’s adaptation and translation by Jan Tomasz Seweryn Jasiński (based on the available theatrical copies of the play), as well as theatrical reviews appearing in the press at that time, concerned with all of Sand’s plays which were staged in Warsaw.

In the knock-out process, as well as in the preliminary phase of moulding sand reclamation, the issue of energy demand for the process of crushing used sand agglutinations, preferably to single grains, is particularly important. At present, numerical values of moulding sand impact resistance, which would allow energy-related aspects of this process to be forecast, are not known, as such research has not been carried out. It seems that impact resistance tested on very small cross-section samples, which allows us to very precisely reveal some unique features of a moulding sand with organic and inorganic binders, is an important parameter, which so far has not been taken into account for evaluation of mechanical properties of moulding sands. Preliminary attempts to determine impact resistance of moulding sands have been carried out as part of own research of the author. The conducted investigations aimed at determining the relationships between the obtained values of tensile strength and impact resistance of moulding sands. In addition, the effect of holding samples at temperatures of 100oC, 200oC, 300oC on the value of impact resistance was determined, both for sands made with fresh and with reclaimed sand grains.

Casting industry has been enriched with the processes of mechanization and automation in production. They offer both better working standards, faster and more accurate production, but also have begun to generate new opportunities for new foundry defects. This work discusses the disadvantages of processes that can occur, to a limited extend, in the technologies associated with mould assembly and during the initial stages of pouring. These defects will be described in detail in the further part of the paper and are mainly related to the quality of foundry cores, therefore the discussion of these issues will mainly concern core moulding sands. Four different types of moulding mixtures were used in the research, representing the most popular chemically bonded moulding sands used in foundry practise. The main focus of this article is the analysis of the influence of the binder type on mechanical and thermal deformation in moulding sands.

The results of investigations of sand shooting into the core box are presented in the hereby paper. The investigations concern the formation of the diphase sand-air flux, its motion, flowing and compaction in the cavity during the core forming. Conditions deciding on the course of individual phases of the process are discussed with taking into consideration the influence of such factors as: the shot pressure, shooting hole diameter, number and distribution of deaerating vents in experimental core boxes (of a single cavity and of multi cavities) on the core sand compaction state. Investigations were performed by means of the modernised experimental shooting machine SR-3D, of the shooting chamber volume of 3.3 dm3, connected with the system of pneumatic supply ensuring the stable pressure supply of values: 0.4 MPa, 0.5 MPa and 0.6 MPa. Two diameters of the shooting hole, equal 10 mm and 20 mm, were applied for filling three experimental core boxes differing in dimensions of cavities and in number and distribution of deaerating vents. The filling process of core boxes was recorded by means of the digital camera PHANTOM V210 with the filming rate of 3000 pictures in second. Simultaneously, during the shot, other values allowing to determine the intensity of the core sand outflow from the shooting chamber to the core box, were tested. The presented in this publication results constitute the important element of the experimental verification of the blowing process simulation calculations which will be performed.

The microstructure and resultant mechanical properties of the MM55 manganese brass applied to ship sand - cast propeller were investigated in relation to the propeller blade section thickness. It was stated that the increase of blade section thickness from 15 mm to 45 mm resulted in the increase of the volume fraction of alpha-phase by 5.3% and that of k-phase by 23.7%, the decrease of the volume fraction of betha-phase by 2.9%, the 0.2% proof stress R0.2 by 11.3%, the ultimate tensile strength Rm by 5.5% and the 5.65 So elongation A5 by 16.8%.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań nad możliwością zastosowania mikrofal do wspomagania procesu suszenia mas formierskich i rdzeniowych sporządzonych z różnymi gatunkami osnowy. Zawartość wody w masach formierskich, podobnie jak rodzaj zastosowanej osnowy, ma istotny wpływ na jakość wytwarzanych odlewów. W badaniach zastosowano unikatowe stanowisko mikrofalowej linii szczelinowej, umożliwiające ocenę, na podstawie pomiaru parametrów dielektrycznych, wielkości strat mocy emitowanego sygnału mikrofalowego penetrującego próbki stosowanych w odlewnictwie gatunków osnowy: chromitowej, cyrkonowej i kwarcowej. Dzięki zastosowaniu unikatowego, prototypowego stanowiska badawczego możliwym było usystematyzowanie wiedzy na temat wpływu parametrów dielektrycznych zastosowanych w badaniach gatunków piasku na skuteczność pochłaniania mikrofal przez sporządzone z nimi masy formierskie, a zatem na efektywność mikrofalowych procesów dosuszania, suszenia i utwardzania przez dehydratację tych mas. Wyniki badań wykazały jednoznacznie wpływ składu chemicznego (mineralogicznego) zastosowanych gatunków osnowy na proces pochłaniania mikrofal oraz wyznaczyły nowe obszary zastosowania mikrofal do wspomagania procesów odlewniczych.
This paper presents the results of studies on the possibility of applying microwaves to support the drying process of molding and core sands made of different types of matrix. The water content in sand molds as well as the type of used matrix has a significant impact on the quality of produced castings. In the research a unique microwave slot line measuring stand was used. Being based on the dielectric parameter measurement it enabled the evaluation of power losses of microwave penetrating molding and core sands samples such as: chromite, zircon and quartz. The knowledge about the influence of dielectric parameters on microwave absorption effectiveness depending on used in the research sand types was systematized. Thus it was possible to specify the efficiency of microwave drying, re drying and hardening of particular molding sands as a result of dehydration. The results of the survey pointed out the impact of the chemical (mineralogical) composition of used matrix types on the microwave absorption process as also determined new fields of microwaves application as a support of foundry processes.

Scanning electron microscopy was employed for the investigation of bacteria living on sand grains in a sandy marine beach in the Gulf of Gdansk (southern Baltic Sea). Bacteria colonize the sand grains; individual topography and shape of the grains were decisive for the colonization. Grains of diverse topography characterised by a great irregularity of shape were preferred, and protected surface sites were favoured. Many of the attached bacteria were found to produce polymer secretions; entire colonies attached by means of polymer nets were observed. A significant morphological diversity of bacteria in the vertical profile of the beach was determined. Bacteria inhabiting the sand grains showed the ability to reproduces.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących bakterii kolonizujących ziarna piasku plaży morskiej zlokalizowanej w rejonie Sopotu. Próby piasku pobierano z morza z odległości około 1,5 m od linii brzegowej (st. 1), z linii brzegowej (st. 2), środkowej części plaży (st. 3) oraz wydmy (st. 4). Przy użyciu mikroskopu skaningowego badano rozmieszczenie bakterii na ziarnach piasku, mechanizm ich adsorpcji do powierzchni ziaren piasku, zróżnicowanie morfologiczne i wymiary oraz ich zdolność do rozmnażania. Badania te wykazały, że bakterie maja zdolność do selektywnego kolonizowania ziaren piasku preferując głównie osłonięte i nieregularne powierzchnie (szpary, szczeliny, wklęśnięcia, fałdy, rysy). Wiele komórek bakterii kolonizujących ziarna piasku tworzyło charakterystyczne struktury włókniste, za pomocą których organizmy te trwale wiązały się z podłożem. Wykazano istotne zróżnicowanie morfologiczne bakterii na poszczególnych stanowiskach badawczych. Wiele bakterii zaabsorbowanych do ziaren piasku charakteryzowało się zdolnością do rozmnażania.

This paper characterizes the crystalline phases present in waste foundry sands prepared based on a quartz sand matrix. The main component of the examined waste is quartz, which is accompanied by its polymorphic forms: tridymite and cristobalite. In addition to quartz, iron oxides such as magnetite, hematite and occasionally wüstite, and grains represented by metallic iron precipitation and Cu-Zn-Pb polymetallic aggregates were found. A particular emphasis was placed on the magnetite present in relatively high amounts, characterized by variable chemical composition, associated with the presence of numerous admixtures of chromium and titanium, which may suggest presence of chromite and titanomagnetite.
W odlewnictwie powszechnie odlewy wykonywane są w formach piaskowych. Sporządzone na bazie piasku masy formierskie stanowią mieszaninę, do której oprócz piasku kwarcowego dodawane są: woda, bentonit, pył węglowy oraz spoiwa nieorganiczne lub organiczne. Zużyte masy formierskie, w których udział piasku dochodzi do około 90%, są na ogół poddawane w odlewni wewnętrznemu odzyskowi (czyli regeneracji), ale część z nich trafia na składowiska. Odpady mas formierskich, których głównym składnikiem jest piasek kwarcowy, w swoim składzie często zawierają minerały reprezentujące tlenki różnych metali, ponadto mogą być w nich obecne drobne wytrącenia metaliczne. Z uwagi na ich obecność materiał ten może stać się wtórnym źródłem ich odzysku. W artykule scharakteryzowano, pod względem jakościowym, skład fazowy zużytych mas formierskich sporządzonych na osnowie piasku kwarcowego. Do badań ze zwałowiska pobrano 3 próbki materiału odpadowego charakteryzujące się odmienną barwą: szarą, brązowo-czerwoną i czarną, które poddano identyfikacji faz metodą dyfrakcji rentgenowskiej oraz rentgenowskiej analizie spektralnej w mikroobszarach; ponadto przy użyciu metod spektrometrycznych oznaczono zawartość wybranych metali występujących w odpadach. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono, że w składzie fazowym wszystkich analizowanych odpadów dominujący udział ma kwarc, obok którego oznaczono jego dwie polimorficzne odmiany: trydymit i krystobalit - ich obecność jest wynikiem przemian alotropowych dokonujących się w trakcie wykonywania odlewów w formach z mas kwarcowych. Oprócz kwarcu w odpadach występują dość znaczne ilości tlenków metali oraz wytrąceń metalicznych, co znalazło swoje odzwierciedlenie w udziale poszczególnych metali w składzie chemicznym odpadów. W próbce 1 obok dominującego żelaza w większych ilościach występują Cr i Mn, ponadto w pojedynczych analizach zaznacza się udział Ti. Pierwiastki te były również wskazane jako główne w składzie chemicznym faz tlenkowych oznaczonych podczas rentgenowskiej analizy spektralnej w mikroobszarach. Na podstawie tych badań oraz przy wykorzystaniu identyfikacji faz metodą dyfrakcji rentgenowskiej wśród faz tlenkowych wyróżniono: roztwór stały FeO-MnO-MgO, magnetyt, tytanomagnetyt, chromit, a także hematyt. Obok nich stwierdzono występowanie α-żelaza. W próbce 2 obok dość znacznej ilości żelaza zaznacza się obecność: Cu, Mn, Pb, Ti, V, Zn. Pierwiastki te są przede wszystkim związane z wtrąceniami metalicznymi, które obok kwarcu i faz tlenkowych żelaza (magnetytu, hematytu i sporadycznie występującego wüstytu) stanowią jeden z głównych składników próbki 2. Próbka 3 charakteryzuje się najwyższym, wśród badanych odpadów, udziałem Fe, któremu towarzyszą Mn i Cr. Rentgenowska analiza spektralna w mikroobszarach wykazała, że chrom tworzy własną fazę - chromit, natomiast mangan wchodzi w skład wytrąceń metalicznych żelaza. Podczas identyfikacji faz metodą dyfrakcji rentgenowskiej potwierdzono obecność α-żelaza, wykazano również dość znaczący udział magnetytu. Obecność w badanych odpadach domieszek magnetytu oraz wytrąceń metalicznych mogłaby wskazywać na potencjalne źródło ich pozyskiwania.

Listy podróżnika George Sand są utworem jedynym w swoim rodzaju, sytuującym się na pograniczu literatury autobiograficznej i eseistyki. Składa się nań dwanaście listów adresowanych najczęściej do znanych pisarce osób. zainteresował nas fakt, że w pierwotnej wersji listów, ukazujących się w Revue des Deux Mondes w latach 1834-1836 zauważyć można silnie zaznaczoną obecność realnego adresata, a co za tym idzie, funkcji pragmatycznej listu. W tekście znaleźć można sygnały świadczące o tym, że pisarka traktowała czasem owe listy - przeznaczone do publikacji, a więc skierowane do nieznanego czytelnika - niemal na równi z listami prywatnymi. To przemieszanie fikcji i rzeczywistości zostaje zatarte w wersji książkowej utworu (pierwsze wydanie w 1837 r.). Z partnerów komunikacji zostaje już tylko autor i czytelnik, co usankcjonowała sama pisarka mówiąc po latach o Listach podróżnika jak o utworze na poły fikcyjnym. Narrator - ów stary podróżnik, staje się jedną z postaci, w które George Sand wcieliła swe przeżycia i refleksje, same zaś listy nabierają charakteru esejów, z emocjonalnie zabarwionymi akcentami osobistymi.

Fryderyk Chopin and George Sand in the Eyes of Polish Biographers and Literary Critics The Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin and the French writer Aurore Dudevant (pen name George Sand) have spent several years in a close relationship, which has become the source of one of those tales about famous lovers, tales that with time acquire various interpretations and begin their own independent life. The present article offers the picture of this relationship gleaned from essays, biographies and literary works written and published in Polish from 1840 until today. The most interesting discovery of the research is a change in the image of George Sand, who had been first seen as a great writer, and only then gradually became no more than Chopin’s lover. Also, the attitude towards George Sand, in spite of numerous objective interpretations by Polish biographers, is still hostile, which distorts the complex character of their relationship.

The paper, especially dealt with problems of reclamation of used furan sand, carried out in new, vibratory sand reclamation unit REGMAS developed by researches from AGH-University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Foundry Engineering in Cracow (Poland). Functional characteristics of reclamation unit as well as the results of reclamation of used sand with furfuryl resin are discussed in the paper. The quality of reclaim was tested by means of the LOI and pH value, dust content in the reclaim and at least by the the quality of the castings produced in moulds prepared with the use of reclaimed matrix.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki analiz mikrostruktur żeliwa szarego EN-GJL-HB155. Formy wykonano z różnych mas formierskich – klasycznej bentonitowej, piaskowej z żywicą chemoutwardzalną oraz termoizolacyjnej o osnowie z mikrosfer glinokrzemianowych. Do wykonania odlewów próbnych i formowania wykorzystano czterostopniowy model schodkowy według tzw. „próby schodkowej” o grubości stopni: 3, 5, 10, 20 mm. Podjęte badania stanowią wstęp do analizy mikrostruktur szkieletowych odlewów żeliwnych. Odlewy szkieletowe powinny się charakteryzować niewielką grubością łączników tworzących szkielet (docelowo poniżej 3 mm), wysoko rozwiniętą powierzchnią oddawania ciepła, dobrymi własnościami mechanicznymi oraz z góry ustaloną geometrią komórek elementarnych. Odlewy szkieletowe stanowią oryginalne opracowanie Katedry Odlewnictwa Politechniki Śląskiej.
The article presents results of EN-GJL-HB155 grey cast iron microstructure analysis. Moulds were prepared with use of different moulding sands – classic with bentonite, quartz with chemical hardened resin and heat-insulating with aluminosilicate microspheres matrix. To perform experimental casting and forming four-step pattern according to step test bar with a thickness of: 3, 5, 10, 20 mm were used. The study are the introduction of cast iron skeleton casting microstructure analysis. Skeleton castings should be characterized by a small thickness of connector making the skeleton (the target of less than 3 mm), the highly developed surface of the heat give-up, good mechanical properties and predetermined geometry of elementary cells. Skeleton castings are the original development of the Department of Foundry Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology.

Ponowne podjęcie tematu wydm zostało zainspirowane możliwością wykorzystania numerycznych obrazów wysokościowych terenu (DEM), na których równocześnie można obserwować wydmy i ich skupiska, rozróżniać ich geometryczną strukturę i "stopień świeżości" w krajobrazie. W terenach o urozmaiconej sytuacji topograficznej i bogatej roślinności okazało się, że ze względu na ich wyraźnie wyodrębniające się kontury na tle pozostałych, bardziej łagodnych form rzeźby terenu, wydmy są znacznie bardziej czytelne na stosownie sparametryzowanych obrazach DEM niż na satelitarnych obrazach fotograficznych.
The sand dunes in Poland were extensively explored and described several dozen years ago and considered a closed topic. Due to recent availability of digital terrain elevation model (DEM) the inland sand dune subject was reestablished. Using the dedicated DEM images one can simultaneously observe separate dune forms, their swarms and characteristic geometrical structures contrasting with other smoothed down forms of terrain landscape. In general, in terrains of rich topographic elements with thick vegetation cover, sand dunes are much easier identifiable upon DEM images than on satellite pictures.
