Opis:
Researching migrants' social identity is considered by the author as a technically and organizationally complicated undertaking, but foremost as a significant intellectual challenge in both the theoretical and methodological dimensions. The article presents and discusses a number of recommendations concerning engagement in such research. The most important include: grounding the research in middle-range theories; moving beyond methodological nationalism; taking an interdisciplinary approach and a historical and processual perspective; resorting to fieldwork, which flexibly employs so-called soft research techniąues, including observation, which requires a longer stay in the field; applying grounding and triangulation procedures in the process of collecting empirical data.

Opis:
The subject of the article concerns the issue of constructing and reconstructing national identity. The object of interest here is a sociological case study of Serbian national identity. It includes reconstruction and interpretation of in-depth interviews conducted in Serbia with the representatives of Serbian symbolic elites. The concept of symbolic elites is approached in the discussed research from Teun van Dijk’s perspective. Thus, they are individuals and groups directly involved in the production of public opinion, who have an impact on the content of publicly available knowledge, and the creation and legitimization of public discourse. The work is embedded in the methodological framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and is based on the assumptions of the Discourse‐Historical Approach (DHA). In this optics, the most important thing is the historical and social context of the studied process of the discursive construction of national identity. Therefore, the conclusions also touch upon the historical, political, and social perspective of the formation of Serbian national identity. The reflection also aims at presenting the analysis from the contemporary perspective (mainly in 2008-2020). Thus, paying attention to the political divisions in Serbia and the country’s road to democratization and European integration, the discussed research study shows the comprehensive specifics of the studied national identity.

Jacek Poniedziałek’s book is devoted to issues extremely important and current. Exploration of the social identity formation process, including a regional identity, has now a great importance not only from a cognitive point of view. Transformational changes in Poland after 1989 meant not only profound changes in the system of public authorities and the economic system. They also had a signifi cant impact on the consciousness of Polish society and its attitude towards the state, power apparatus, and the most important problems of collective life. Extremely important direction of changes in the public authority model became a more and more articulated desire for decentralization and deconcentration of unified and the indivisible sphere of state power so far.

Opis:
Based upon the original application to the European Commission, this article gives insights into the thinking of the Euroidentities team at the point that the project began. The question: Is the European ‘identity project’ failing? is posed in the sense that the political and economic attainments of the European Union have not been translated into a sense of identity with or commitment to Europe from the populaces that have benefited from them. The urgency of European ‘identity work’ is asserted with a number of levels for the construction of European identity being hypothesized. Euroidentities is intended to break conceptual ground by bringing together on an equal footing two apparently antagonistic views of identity – the collective and institutional and the individual and biographical – to give a more anchored and nuanced view of identity formation and transformation than either can provide on its own. Rather than following the dominant approaches to research on European identity that have been macro-theoretical and ‘top-down’, retrospective in-depth qualitative biographical interviews are planned since they provide the ideal means of gaining insight into the formation of a European identity or multiple identities from the ‘bottom up’ perspective of non-elite groups. The reliability of analysis will be buttressed by the use of contrastive comparison between cases, culminating in contrastive comparison across the national project teams between cases drawn from different ‘sensitized groups’ that provide the fieldwork structure of the project. The paper concludes with a summary of some of the more significant findings.

In this article I argue that contemporary researchers in the Lodz historiographic center try to remain faithful to “the historiographic testament” of M. H. Serejski and his disciples. Th e texts of A. Brzezinska, J. Kolbuszewska, R. Stobiecki reveal the continuation of “classical” patt erns of historiographical research. Chronologically, they primarily concern the Polish historiography in the second half of the 19th and in the 20th century and the historiography in other countries – Russia and France – in the 20th century. In contrast to previously published works, our studies focus more oft en on the widely-understood contemporaneity. In particular we are researching women’s history (J. Kolbuszewska, R. Stobiecki), historical anthropology (A. Brzezińska), and the memory and politics of history (R. Stobiecki).

Opis:
Krajobraz Ziemi Średzkiej ewoluował przez wieki, lecz wyrazisty i trwały wizerunek nadał mu dopiero wiek XIX, którego odzwierciedleniem są miedzy innymi założenia dworskie oraz wiążący je system relacji przestrzenno-krajobrazowych. Chociaż tradycję kultury ziemiańskiej przerwała drastycznie II wojna światowa, to nadal istnieje masowa fascynacja „polskim dworem" jako wzorcem architektonicznym. Zaowocowało to z jednej strony ochroną i konserwacją zabytkowej substancji, a z drugiej, współczesnymi realizacjami domów mieszkalnych nawiązującymi do barokowych i klasycystycznych form siedziby ziemiańskiej, pozbawionych jednak kontekstu krajobrazowego. W związku z tym należałoby zadać pytanie: czy w przestrzeni wiejskiej jest miejsce, możliwość i sens kontynuacji wartości architektoniczno-krajobrazowych, które składają się na ideowy obraz „dworu polskiego"? W tym kontekście istotne wydaje się określenie zasad kształtowania przestrzeni służących ochronie tożsamości na obszarze Ziemi Średzkiej.
The landscape of Środa Land has been evolving over the centuries. However, it became distinct and permanent only in the 19th century. It is reflected by manor complexes, which are bound with a system of spatial and scenic relations. Although the tradition of landowner culture was drastically interrupted by World War II, the Polish manor as an architectural model is still fascinating to a large number of people. On the one hand, this fascination resulted in protection and conservation of historical places. On the other hand, the designs of modern residential buildings are inspired by baroque and classist forms of landowners' manors, but they lack the scenic context. In view of this fact, we should ask the question whether in rural areas there is space and possibility and if it makes sense to continue the architectural and scenic values which make the conceptual image of the Polish manor. It is significant to specify the rules of spatial development to protect the identity of Środa Land.

This article highlights the importance of applying material and technical studies to the pictorial heritage of Cusco, especially in situations where written accounts of the resources and creative processes involved in its production are limited. Through the analysis of samples of the physical order of the painting San Francisco distributing bread to the poor as a child, exhibited in the Museo Colonial de San Francisco in Santiago de Chile, the material iconological method was used to identify links with the European pictorial tradition and South Andean contributions and inventions. From this specific study, a way is presented by which a series of laboratory examinations focused on recognising the techniques and materials used in viceregal painting can provide valuable information about the context and society that gave them form and meaning.

In the article we present the results of a study devoted to identity changes in late adolescence. The participants were students of three types of upper-secondary schools: basic vocational schools, technical upper-secondary schools, and general upper-secondary schools. Measurement was performed five times, in three consecutive years: 2012/2013, 2013/2014, and 2014/2015. The first measurement was carried out in the first semester of the first grade (students’ mean age: 16 years; n = 310), and the fifth measurement was performed during the first semester of the third grade (students’ mean age: 18 years). The number of students who took part in all five measurements was 118 (38% of the initial sample of n = 310). The instrument we used was the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS/PL; Brzezińska & Piotrowski, 2010; Luyckx, Schwartz, Berzonsky et al., 2008). In the group of general upper-secondary school students, we observed an increase in adaptive exploration (in breadth and in depth) as well as an increase in the strength of commitments over the 2.5 years of schooling. Among students of vocational schools, especially basic vocational schools, we observed regressive changes, such as a decrease in adaptive exploration, a decrease in commitments, an increase in the experienced difficulties with identity formation (an increase in ruminative exploration). The results confirmed that different educational paths may involve differences in terms of the changes taking place in students’ identity in the period of adolescence.

Opis:
In accordance with the classic – developmental – approach to identity originated by Marcia (1966), there are two basic identity formation processes: exploration and commitment. The first step on the way to mature identity is exploration. The aim of the present study was to analyze the dynamics of exploration in the period when it begins: in early adolescence. The participants in the longitudinal study (with three measurements at half-year intervals) were 327 adolescents aged 11 to 15 (M = 13.26, SD = 1.20) – elementary and middle school students. The sample was balanced in terms of gender (45% were girls). The instrument we used was the Early Identity Exploration Scale (EIES; Kłym & Cieciuch, 2015), enabling the measurement of identity exploration in 12 domains: physical appearance, free time, family of origin, work, boyfriend–girlfriend relationships, own opinion formation, perception of own place in the life cycle, self-reflection, future, future family, outlook on life, and attitude toward rules. The analysis was performed using a latent growth curve model. It turned out that in some domains (physical appearance, work, boyfriend–girlfriend relationships, and outlook on life) the level of exploration systematically increased, despite the relatively short time of the study; the domain of boyfriend–girlfriend relationships was the only one in which we found no interpersonal differentiation in the intensity of this increase. It also turned out that there was interpersonal differentiation in the level of exploration at the outset in all the domains analyzed.

The study comprises the presentation of an authorial approach to cultural identity, viewed from the perspective of the communities (consisting of children, parents and teachers) of schools with Polish as the teaching language in Australia and some selected European countries (Austria, France, the Czech Republic). In reference to the culturalistic model of identity, the characteristics of the most frequent identity behaviours of these communities were provided in the ethnic, national, integrative and mixed dimension. The author also indicates the contemporary contexts of identity shaping, which are determined by migration processes and multiculturalism. By formulating the most important conclusions resulting from the research, the need is indicated for implementing intercultural education in schools with Polish as the teaching language. Among other things, this will enhance the shaping of a multidimensional feeling of identity.

The aim of the article is to present the methodological difficulties and problems that I encountered as a researcher conducting field research on emotions in teachers’ professional work, in the context of two issues, i.e. access to data and researcher’s search for identity. The analysis was limited to the difficulties associated with the selection of the research area, problems with entering the research area and obtaining access to data and reflections on the conscious hiding of the researcher’s identity. The ethnographic studies described concerned emotions in teachers’ professional work. I assumed that only the interpretation paradigm would give me the basics to understand the process of managing emotions and let me see the emotions, including their sources, present in the teacher’s work. The reflections in the article are the result of: 1) multiple observations and participant observations conducted by the author in 2008-2016 at primary and junior high schools from the Łódź agglomeration; 2) analyzes of unstructured and structured interviews conducted by the author with current teachers, retired teachers, parents, principals and other school employees; 3) unstructured research talks with the respondents, 4) analyzes of existing documents and websites. The selection of the researcher’s identity is determined by the research area. In the study of educational institutions, revealing the identity of the researcher enables wider access to data.

This study investigated three Japanese L2 learners who joined a government-funded, short-term study abroad program in the USA during their first year of college. Four years after the program, we interviewed the learners about their overseas experiences. We also asked what they had done during their university years after the program. We then analyzed their accounts to explore participants’ linguistic and personal growth during and after the program. Their stories offered important insights into what short-term study abroad programs should provide: critical experiences that participants embrace through meeting and communicating with new people in L2s for the purpose of mutual understanding. When participants perceived their experiences to be successful and valuable and felt a desire to become a more efficient L2 user, they took actions to improve their L2 skills in relation to other life goals after returning home. Furthermore, their L2 identities are likely interwoven with their current and aspiring personal identities. As such, their stories are self-development trajectories and evidence of L2-learning-mediated personal growth through social interaction. We propose that short-term study programs: (a) avoid an exclusive focus on L2 learning on-site, (b) include ample opportunities of meaningful social interaction, and (c) target first-year students.

The results, based on data collected from in-depth, semi-structured interviews with twenty professionals, demonstrate the interviewees’ deep scepticism towards corporate narrations, which are interpreted as persuasive and serving corporate ends. Thus, online projections of corporate identities do always match actual images held by stakeholders. The interviewees have emerged as critical readers of corporate communications and active constructors of corporate image.

The article compares selected aspects of synchronic and diachronic situation of the two ethnolects in Poland: Cashubian and Silesian. The analysis singles out some focal points around which ethnic identity tends to concentrate, for example identity bonds, official inscriptions, language of instruction. The identity strengthening strategies in the respective ethnolects are then compared and discussed. The framework is based on sociological and anthropological theories, e.g.rational choice theory, functionalism as well as on the semiotic rich-get-richer principle, the paradigm of visual anthropology and the technique of visual essay.

Opis:
Foreign language learning innvolves cognitive, affective and social functioning of the persons involved in this experience. As a social practice, it is also related to the learners’ perceptions of their identity, specifically to their language identity which refers to the relationship between one’s sense of self and the language used to communicate. This implies that using a system of communication, the speaker develops a new sense of self that remains in a dynamic relation with other senses of self, based on (an)other language(s) the person knows. Language learners’ identity is no longer defined as fixed and stable but as “complex, contradictory and multifaceted” (Norton 1997, p. 419). It is dynamic because learners enter into various discourses and negotiate their position within different communities of practice. Language both shapes and is shaped by identity of its users. This article discusses how students of English as a foreign language perceive the role of this language in their construction of selves/identity. First, postmodern conceptualisations of identity and identity categories are presented along with their relevance to the field of Second Language Acquisition. Second, selected empirical studies pertaining to adult immigrant contexts, foreign language contexts and study abroad contexts are briefly reported. Then the results of an empirical study on the students’ of English (n=83) perceptions of their identity in the context of foreign language study are introduced. The study revealed that most of the participants realise complex relations between language learning and their identity and are aware of the effects that studying English (as well as other foreign languages) has on them. English gave them new possibilities in life, allowed them to communicate with people worldwide and make friends with them. They have new and interesting prospects for the future. It affected their personality by making them more open-minded and tolerant of otherness. The knowledge of English gives the students power, prestige, and opportunities to live and work in a changing world of complex social relations.

The preamble of Constitution of Ukraine defines irreversibility of the European and Euro-Atlantic course of Ukraine. “European Union”, “European integration”, “European values” and “European identity” are new and important terms in modern Ukrainian political and media discourses. Our paper presents a general theoretical overview of the European identity study and its influence on the process of European integration. We see the development of European identity as an important precondition for stable integration of new states, including Ukraine, to the European Union. The suggested analysis of the existing approaches to the European identity study demonstrates direct connections of the European identity evolution to the new political contexts, cultures and languages of the EU. Short overviews of two linguistics projects LINEE and ELDIA show that English does not threaten EU cultural and inguistic diversity and serves as a neutral common language with only a marginal national connotation. English is seen as lingua franca in EU, and many of non-native speakers of English perceive it as an instrument of further intercultural understanding and contact.
«Unia Europejska», «integracja europejska», «wartości europejskie» i «tożsamość europejska» to nowe i ważne pojęcia, mające szerokie zastosowanie we współczesnym ukraińskim dyskursie politycznym i medialnym. Zaprezentowana analiza istniejących podejść do badania tożsamości europejskiej wskazuje na bezpośredni związek ewolucji tożsamości europejskiej z nowym politycznym kontekstem, językami i różnymi kulturami Unii Europejskiej.

Opis:
One of the most fundamental principles which underpins the functioning of Western societies is the gender binary system, based on the eternal division into men and women as well as their social and biological predestination. Critiques of the binary system claim that there is an apparent lack of symmetry between the polar opposites constituting the binary system. The male-female dichotomy appears to be asymmetrical since the binary opposition is viewed as unequal: females are dominated and controlled by males and forced to perform less significant, minor (less valued) social roles. Binarism refers to identity and social roles, as well as to physical attributes of females and males. The consequence of binarism on the realm of physicality is the view that a woman is obliged to constantly improve her attractiveness so that she could be “won over in an impressive way” by “the best possible partner”. The main aim of this article is examination of social anxiety over the effects of women’s emancipation, which is believed to give rise to the masculinization of females, particularly those who have achieved social and professional success, and aspire to (or have already acquired) a high social status, income, or professional position. The theoretical considerations are confronted with results of the qualitative research related to female managers' identity.

National identity

Borderline
Opis:
The debate about identity in the process of its decryption should be placed in the logic of a network system. In the course of the evolution of international structures a multi-level governance model was developed. It is all the more important that from the subnational, through national (today wrongly regarded as the basic one) to transnational, there is an axis for a discourse around the issues which are called either international or European (i.e., community). Interpenetration of subjectivity led to co-occurrence of events, which only seems to represent the same semantic range. Coincidence understood in such a way involves the model of co-occurrence of "identities" which are subject to antagonism. Un- doubtedly, it is difficult to determine definitional scope of the notion of Polish national identity and German national identity. In this case the difficulty is heightened by the need to determine the national identity as the official position of Poland or Germany in the structures of European Union. Since the identity of a nation is defined both expan- sively and sovereignly (authority on behalf of the citizens), the cosmopolitanization of such an attitude is insignificant. Barbara Skarga points out that the new kind of order does not arise, because the world seems to be ultimately ordered, as demiruges wanted. On the other hand, already in 1990 Jurgen Habermas argued that we entered a new era of a relationship between the state and the citizen, since the state had lost the pre- vailing monopoly on determining factors of citizenship, which were also influenced by Postmodernist Turn.

Deaf sociocultural identity of the deaf is an important issue from the point of view of their psychological and social functioning. The present study was focused on people with prelingual deafness using cochlear implants (CI) demonstrating high skills in oral Polish language. The research question concerned the relation between the aforementioned identity and symptoms of depression, as well as the age, sex and age at cochlear implantation. The study included 28 prelingually deaf CI users aged between 18 and 40 and was conducted using N. Glickman’s DIDS, PHQ-9 and an information questionnaire. Deaf sociocultural identity is similar in terms of proportion of types of identities of the deaf to the results obtained in other studies, i.e. hearing and bicultural identities turned out to be predominant in the study group. The marginal identity only coexists with the presence of depression symptoms.

What happens when people of different cultures, values, religion live together? Sociological studies on immigrative phenomenon often swing between immigration and integration policies. These policies actually reveal the difficulty of the host society to institutionalize new models of social differences accompanying multiculturalism. Immigrants who “arrive” continue their life in a place where they do not passively participate in the passing of time, but become actors. Pressed by the hegemonic culture of the host society to adapt, do not cease to practice their religious and origin cultural expressions, often in conditions of urban spatial and social marginalization, they resist assimilation with ethnic persistence strategies. Considering the impact of religion and origin cultural values on expression of differences, it is important to consider their role in the integration process. And, above all-facilitate or hinder integration? These dynamics have been analyzed in a research study on immigrants’ integration process in Palermo. The main results are presented in this paper. In this case study, the research’s data hypothesizes a theoretical model of integration in which immigrants, free to express their religious and cultural differences, tend to reduce their perception of minority

Część polskich miast utraciła swoją tożsamość w wyniku II wojny światowej, a działania służące jej odzyskaniu trwają do dziś. Silne osadzenie wybitnych budowli w przestrzeni i tradycji miejsca, z zachowaniem ich współczesnego charakteru, wzbogaca przestrzeń i służy zachowaniu ciągłości tożsamości, nadając jej równocześnie nowe wartości.
The identity of the individual is a subjective issue, shaped, among others, by the environment. The quality of surroundings, the identity of the place influences both the formation of the identity of the individual and the identity of the collective. The political, social, and economic changes of recent decades have intensified the need to identify who we are and thus the need to preserve local traditions. Many Polish cities have lost their identity as a result of the activities of the last world war, and attempts to recover it continue to this day. There are cities which try to improve their image through building spectacular realisations, architectural icons. Commercialising space does not always have a positive impact on the identity of the city. Strong integration of remarkable buildings in the space and tradition of the city, preserving their contemporary character, enriches the space and helps retain the continuity of identity, at the same time adding new values to it.

Following the discourse-based, interactional approaches to modality and identity, and recognizing that knowledge is social, relative and contextual, this paper aims to explore epistemic predicates in a corpus of Polish medical weblogs run by healthcare practitioners. The focus is put on the role of epistemic predicates in identity work performed by the bloggers and their audience. The study reveals the variety of the usage patterns of epistemic verbs, the diversity of the roles which healthcare practitioners act out in their blogs and the numerous purposes for which they engage in blogging. To construct their professional identity, healthcare practitioners draw on discursive strategies of distancing-mitigation, legitimization and self-disclosure. In this way, they position themselves as expert specialists who follow their professional ethos, as researchers who extend their knowledge and advice givers who are willing to share knowledge with their non-specialist audience and to educate their patients. They authenticate their expertise through references to their own medical practice and experience. The bloggers also aim to minimize the distance between their readers and engage in conversation with them. In response, the audience actively participates in the co-construction of knowledge and experience-sharing, and contributes to community building.
Wykorzystując interakcyjne podejście do badania modalności i tożsamości w dyskursie, artykuł analizuje konstruowanie wiedzy i tożsamości na przykładzie użycia czasowników epistemicznych w korpusie polskich blogów medycznych.

In the pedagogical analysis undertaken in this study, some theoretical and methodological conceptualizations were applied, referring to the model of youth’s quality of life, developed on the basis of qualitative material collected in the course of international comparative studies – Tadeusz Lewowicki’s Theory of Identity Behaviors and Harold J. Noah’s model of comparing the quality of academic education. The basis for outlining the relationship between students’ life satisfaction and their sense of identity in the local, regional, national, European and supra-European dimension was the comparative research conducted in 2019–2021 in the Polish-Czech-Slovak borderland. The analysis and interpretation of the collected empirical material show that – although the neighbouring countries have undergone political changes, they belong to the European Union, and they collaborate in many areas – the living standards, but above all the influences in the educational sphere, the models and social values, as well as in lifestyles, are significantly different.

Drawing on Cultural Literacy (Segal 2014), the study focuses on the methods and thoughts of Roland Barthes ([1967] 1985) on urban space. The main section of this paper includes an overview of the places and institutions in Warsaw that Turkow mentioned in his memoirs. All the addresses are ascribed to four social categories (home and friends, religion, education, and freetime) and then discussed. The final section contains research conclusions on Turkow’s selfhood, his sense of Jewish and Polish identity, and his attachment to Jewish or Polish culture, as well as the defining characteristics of his Polish-Jewish/ Jewish-Polish self-identity. This article aims to explain the peculiar circumstances that contribute to the complexity of determining and investigating what can be considered as Jewish identity.

The article presents the analysis of two speeches given by Rory O’Neill, also known as Panti Bliss, who is so far the most recognisable Irish drag queen. Apart from being a drag queen, Rory O’Neill is also a political activist whose performances were part of the campaign before the referendum concerning the 34th Amendment to the Constitution of Ireland. In the analysis both these aspects of the speaker’s identity are taken into consideration. Although the analysis is mostly linguistic, it also considers extralinguistic aspects of communication, e.g. the performer’s appearance on stage, as contextual elements are essential in sociolinguistic contexts. Thus, the analysis draws from the theoretical background focused on political discourse and the language used by drag queens to a detailed account of the two speeches in order discuss them in relation to the standards of both a drag performance and a political speech.

In the contemporary world we observe rising importance of festivals and other public events in the process of transmitting ethnic identity and forming a contemporary form of a nation. They gain an especially significant meaning in case of nations the development of which has been disturbed by external political circumstances and a colonial hierarchical order. This paper concerns an all-Buryatic festival "Altagrana", the tenth anniversary of which took place in July 2012. On one hand, the analysis discusses the contents of the on-line program of the festival, and on the other hand, all that has happened in Aginsk on July 21 and 22. The article shows the process of building and strengthening the Buryatic canon of culture, i.e. the standardisation of the culture's elements which constitute the core and emblem of Buryatness: images, symbols, and historical references. In the context of intensive globalization Buryatic cultural identity has to be built by modern means, understandable for all generations. Under such circumstances festivals and similar public events organized and designed by Buryatic elites appear to be an extremely effective tool for forming and strengthening ethnic identity. Thus I have used the term "festival culture" in the title of the text.

The article presents the results of a study on the role of social participation (Reinders) in shaping the identity (Luyckx et al.) of people with mild intellectual disability in late adolescence and emerging adulthood compared to those in intellectual norm (N = 127). Three waves of measurement were carried out at semi-annual intervals, using the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS/PL-1) and the Social Participation Questionnaire (SPQ-S). In all the waves people with intellectual disability had a higher level of the moratorium orientation, and at Wave 3 they had a higher level of the transitive orientation. Differences in the levels of identity dimensions were observed in only one wave and only in the case of exploration in depth. The type of social participation has proved to be a factor differentiating the levels of identity dimensions, especially commitment making and identification with commitment, the highest level of which was observed in people with integration and assimilation types. The study responds to the need, expressed in the literature, to focus on specific groups in identity development studies.

This essay is a case study about linguistic mechanisms that affect an emigrant’s life. The research is based onthe autobiography by the Polish emigrant Eva Hoffman, analyzed with the use of theories She communicates poorly because the of new language corresponds with different from the native language, creating another IRUP. Eva starts to treat daily communication like a written, in the meaning used by Roland Barthes, which results in alienation. However, some linguistic principles such ast or inseparability of and do not affect her at all. She deepensher understanding of both her mother tongue and the new one by linguistic terms such as translation describe and belonging to. Her identity is an because she replacesher old home with a new. The old home remains a while an emigrant changesher onceptions connected with the words.

Turner’s Three-Process Theory of Power together with Social Identity Theory (SIT) and Self-Categorization Theory (SCT) have been influential in social psychology to examine power-related behaviors. While positivist experimental and survey methods are common in social psychological studies, these approaches may not adequately consider Turner’s constructs due to a comparative lack of ecological validity. Drawing on a methodology-focused review of the existing research of applying aspects of Turner’s theory of power and SIT/SCT, the interpretivist case study approach by using interviews and other data collections is highlighted as an alternative and useful method to the application of Turner’s framework. The applicability of the interpretive case study approach is further emphasized in comparison with the positivist experiments and surveys. This paper also discusses how this new way of exploration may allow us to understand Turner’s work better.

Since the inception of the L2 motivational self system (Dörnyei, 2005), which operationalises motivation as a function of learners’ future identities, the field of L2 motivation has seen a growing interest in mental imagery. Numerous studies have examined the role of a future self-guide, that is, the ideal L2 self, and have confirmed it to be powerful for explaining learner motivation (e.g., Csizér & Lukács, 2010; Dörnyei & Ushioda, 2009); however, few studies have explored how mental imagery, a key dimension of the ideal L2 self (Dörnyei & Chan, 2013), can manifest itself in actual motivated behaviour. Using in-depth interviews, the present study aims to explore the motivational capacity of the natural use of mental imagery in three doctoral candidates studying at a British university. The main research focuses on examining how imagery was employed to stimulate the participants’ L2 learning and their doctoral research as well as career choice. This paper proposes a conceptual framework of types, functions, and conditions of imagery in academic and professional achievements based on the data obtained. It reveals an intriguing array of imagery types, functions, and conditions, which shape the achievement of the individuals’ desired goals. Recommendations and implications for future research on imagery use in SLA are also discussed.

Opis:
This article is a comparative analysis of biographies of the two women. One of them lives in Elk, Poland and the other in Swiecionys, Lithuania. Both of them live in the areas where came from their ancestors, from generation to generation. Both of them were born in the 20’s of the 20th century in the villages situated nearby the towns they are currently living, however their homes used to be in different countries than nowadays. Before the World War 2, both Vilnius Region and Eastern Prussia were multicultural, multilingual and multi-denominational with one major religion, to which followers belonged both characters of the analysed biographies. Local customs of different provenance were characteristic for the whole village, irrespectively of its inhabitants’ identities. The end of World War 2 and the change of the borders became a traumatic experience for young at that time girls. They were forced to make difficult decisions, to choose their state and their nationality, to decide about their personal life and about separation from their close family. The both women were not involved in the war, neither military nor politically. However, they both were afflicted by political decisions made by the victors of the war, which were the consequences of the actions of those who started that war. The sense of identity of ordinary people living in multicultural areas, which are changing their statehood in different historical periods, is very complex and difficult. The aim of this article is to show the factors which can influence on national and cultural identity of ordinary people living in areas, where the statehood has changed.

The present article aims to analyse the social trauma implicit in the representation of the nonconformist identity formation in Judita Vaiciunaite’s play The Siege (Lithuanian Apsiaustis) directed by Giedrius Mackevicius. The play reflects on the experiences and inner states of characters as they struggle to survive in a seized city, wherein the motif of the seized city alludes to the political situation of Kaunas as a city seized by the totalitarian system. The play was performed by an amateur group in 1971 in the Kaunas Trade Unions Palace of Culture. The study relies on trauma studies by Danute Gailiene for the analysis of Giedrius Mackevicius’ debut experience; also it refers to the semantics of Judita Vaiciunaite’s play The Siege. In the staging of The Siege in 1971, on the contrary, the universal thematic dimension of this drama was emphasized.

Większość migrantów z Polski, którzy przebywają w Wielkiej Brytanii, długotrwałych, relatywnie dobrze wykształconych, młodych i posiadających przykre doświadczenia w kraju wysyłającym, radzi sobie w nowych okolicznościach społecznych i zawodowych całkiem dobrze. Co więcej, migranci wyrażają zadowolenie z powodu podjęcia decyzji o wyjeździe. To zupełnie nowa jakość w polskiej migracji.
Most migrants from Poland who live in Great Britain long-term, fairly well-educated, young and with bad experiences in their sending country can manage quite well professionally and socially in the new circumstances and are basically happy with the decision to have left the country of origin. This is a completely new quality in Polish migration, and therefore is important but diffi cult to grasp because of its distinctness as compared to traditional forms of migration. When people migrate from one nation or culture to another they carry their identity with them. On settling down in the new culture, their cultural identity is likely to change as well as their sense of belonging. In this paper the author attempts to identify the main characteristics of Polish migrants’ identity in their new surroundings. The main subject of the study is the relationship between socio-cultural identity and migration.

This article contributes to the New Urbanism debate by considering the relationship between the identity of a place and quality in architecture and urban design. It combines a general theoretical discussion and an operational analysis with a comparative study of two commercial centres: Manufaktura in Łódź (Poland) and Val d’Europe in Marne-la-Vallée (France). It concludes that while the guidelines of New Urbanism can help both private investors and public stakeholders make better strategic decisions, according to the concept of quality architecture and urban design, its framework should be applied with care for community needs and the historical character of the city.

Najwięcej badanych pochodziło z Polski (26,58%) i Stanów Zjednoczonych (24%). Do badania wykorzystano kwestionariusz zbudowany z pytań otwartych, dzięki czemu uzyskane dane mają charakter narracji.
The aim of the article is to present results of qualitative study regarding narratives of people that build identity based on Internet meme, in this case doomer meme. The theoretical framework for the presented study is based on concepts of narrative psychology, mainly the concept of narrative identity by Dan P. McAdams. According to this concept, a person’s identity is constructed through narratives that relate to his/her life, therefore, in order to discover what a person is like, one needs to know the stories he/she tells about himself/herself. In the presented study, participated 82 people aged 14–31 (M = 19; SD = 3.71). Most of the respondents were from Poland (26.58%) and the United States (24%). A questionnaire composed of open questions was used for the study, so the gathered data could be of narrative nature. The analysis of the acquired data was based on the principles of hermeneutic method proposed by Magdalena Żurko and the method of hermeneutic analysis by Ewa Kruchowska. The results shows that a person identifying himself/herself with a doomer is a person with a pessimistic view on the modern world, people and life in general. In life stories of respondents, there were critical moments that made them uphold such identity, e.g. loss of a close relative or major life setbacks.

This paper examines some of the key cultural concepts and relevant historical factors that may shape the development of Anglo-Cypriot gay identity. Accounts of sexual identity experiences provided by second generation Greek and Turkish Cypriot gay men in London are examined in the light of this analysis to explore how these men negotiate Anglo-Cypriot and gay identity. Twenty-eight self-identified second generation Greek and Turkish gay men living in London were recruited by advertising in the gay press, by writing to community groups, and gay groups and organizations and by “snowballing.” In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with those men recruited through these channels. Data were subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis. The personal accounts of these men demonstrate that their sexual identity does not always become their primary identity and that different identities are constructed by individuals at different places and times. Most men indicated that the translation of their sexual desires and behaviors into the “political statement” of gay identity is not only difficult but is strongly resisted. Instead they chose to construct their identity in terms of their relationships with their families, their peers at work and other members of their community. The findings of this research may help develop an understanding of the complexities surrounding the “sexual and cultural” identities of Anglo-Cypriot gay men, thereby reinforcing the notion that identity is multiple, contested and contextual.

This article explores the methodological implications of investigating the collective identity of Fathers For Justice (FFJ). More specifically, a three-pronged approach of employing participant observation, interviews, and content analysis is assessed as the basis for understanding FFJ’s collective identity. This methodological approach reveals that meanings and practices related to post-separation and divorced fatherhood as well as the importance of children are a significant dimension of a FFJ collective identity. I conclude that an important part of the FFJ collective identity is not based on these activists perceiving themselves as self-serving (Fathers for Just Us), but as those seeking equality in terms of being recognized as continous parents after separation and divorce (Fathers are Us).

The aim of the article is to analyse a selection of literary works by Colm Tóibín and Anne Enright from the perspective of modernist and postmodernist theories about memory and identity. It is argued that Tóibín’s and Enright’s works are characterised by a typically postmodern approach towards memory: their narrators are both acutely aware of the significance of memory in the creation of their identity, and of its limitations. This paradoxical approach towards the question of memory, which stresses its importance as well as its fallibility, is of central importance in this article.

Internet of Things (IoT) plays a major function in the public infrastructure, including power grids, control systems, smart cards, smart cities, intelligent transportation, education, and so on. The IoT networks provide ample benefits arising from transmission of the data between the IoT nodes and the servers. However, security constitutes a major concern in the IoT applications, as secret information may get disclosed to the unauthorized third-party in the network. Thus, secure authentication is a major requirement for managing and communicating with respect to the devices in the IoT environment. In this survey, 50 research papers are reviewed, referring to various authentication protocols used for ensuring adequate security in the network. The authentication methods are categorized on the basis of the security mechanisms, namely, the lightweight approach, the identity approach, the mutual authentication approach, and the cryptography-based authentication approaches, with the challenges faced by these existing methods being reported. Moreover, a simple overview is provided based on authentication protocols, toolsets, and evaluation metrics. Conform to this survey, most of the research articles concentrated on the lightweightbased approaches, and the most commonly applied evaluation metrics include packet loss, throughput, and efficiency.

This paper presents a qualitative analysis of a public person’s speech with its language and translation, and the way they can be manipulated to create a public image. As a public person, Lech Wałęsa has been subject to public scrutiny politically and ideologically ever since he became involved in public affairs as a trade union member and activist. Later, as a presidential candidate in the first democratic presidential election in post-communist Poland which he won in 1990, his publicity soared. Consequently, with his popularity came a heavier price of fame; he was subjected to strong criticism, and the way he spoke became a source of jokes and mocking nationwide. Public image is what others receive and read us by. It is an amalgamation of several factors – language being one of the major ones in creating one’s identity.

Opis:
Aim. The research aim of this article is to explore academic youth’s education process and career in the UK. The research focuses on Lithuanian students from three prestigious British universities. Methods. The study revealed three questions: the reasons of students choises to study in prestigious higher schools of the UK, students’ satisfaction in terms of their education process; their placement in the labor market, or academic/business career. To answer the research questions qualitative research was conducted by using structured, partly-structured in-depth interviews, the questionnaire forms, discussions, and observation methods. Results. The analysis of the empirical research data revealed that the determining factor of students’ choices was the high quality of the studies and international work perspectives after graduation as well as the rating of the universities and the recommendations of senior fellow students, progressive learning and living environment. Furthermore, they had the possibility to become part of the international social web. The results of the survey indicate that students give more value to individualism emphasizing achievement, critical thinking, high level of education. They also appreciate the possibilities to apply knowledge in real-world setings, also to the career in international business or academic field, which is garanteed by most reputable universities. In such evironment students are encouraged to be responsible actors and to create a more sustainable world (UNESCO (ESD), 2017). Cognitive value. With the help of a case study of education in the UK, the paper reveals the sustainable education perspectives.

Opis:
In this essay, I discuss a potential nexus for comparison between Hawaiian and Chinese philosophies grounded in what I call “terrestrial identity”. I bring Fei Xiaotong’s (1910–2005) description of the formation of social identity in China, which is historically agrarian and inalienably place-based, to meet contemporary Hawaiian philosophical perspectives of personal responsibility (kuleana), genealogical (moʻokūʻauhau) consciousness, and “seascape epistemology” (Ingersoll, 2016) to flesh out a new theory of relationality, one that includes the ontological, historical, and ethical relationship of humans to the land on which they orient themselves and that defines the circumstances of their lives. The concept of terrestrial identity is inclusive in terms of types of relational entities, accommodating place, space, and memory into a comprehensive social ontology. It also opens onto discussions of contemporary social problems in a way that centres place and contextuality. I will conclude this essay with such a discussion, regarding homelessness among Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians).
