Aim. The aim of the article is to understand how Chinese parents draw on their learning beliefs and experiences within the Chinese educational context to make decisions about their children’s overseas education, as well as analysing how their learning beliefs are similar or different from East Asian or Western learning beliefs. Methods. The study is based on more than 100 in-depth separate interviews with 22 Chinese families conducted over serval years between 2016 and 2019. Based on interpretative phenomenological analysis and discourse analysis, the results are coded according to the theory of values proposed by Clyde Kluckhohn (1951). These learning values are further coded according to whether they are reflective of the American learning model (EALM), Confucian learning model (CLM), and Confucian learning philosophies. Results. The analysis shows that Chinese parents have displayed similar learning beliefs in socialising their children in the family domain, in their disapproval of the Chinese education system, and in their pursuit of a Western overseas education. The Chinese families’ pursuit of a Western education for their children are driven by their cultural leaning beliefs, which are rooted in Confucian heritage culture, and which also echo European American heritage cultures. Conclusion. Many researchers tend to emphasise cultural differences in learning, particularly between Confucian heritage and European American heritage cultures. This paper shows the possibilities of cultural learning values shaping educational choices, expands upon the understanding of Confucian heritage culture, and suggests the similarities between the learning cultures of East Asia and the West.

Pośród wielu zmian społeczno-kulturowych, do których prowadzą procesy cyfryzacji, warto zwrócić uwagę na nowe formy dzielenia się zapośredniczone lub zorganizowane wokół mediów społecznościowych. Od praktyki regulowanej złożonym systemem wzajemnych zobowiązań oraz oczekiwań (moralność grupowa), dzielenie się dryfuje w kierunku aktywności stymulowanej algorytmicznie, której istotą nie jest przetrwanie, ale uzależnienie, sprzedaż lub chęć pokazania się. Mimo technologicznie stymulowanych przemian dzielenie się pozostaje jedną z najważniejszych (kotwiczących) praktyk uspołeczniających, zapewniających trwanie społeczeństwom po-nowoczesnym. W odróżnieniu od epoki przedinternetowej, proces włączania jednostek do szerszych całości społecznych poprzez dzielenie się zorganizowany jest jednak wokół nowych wzorców, nowych podzielanych znaczeń, alternatywnych sposobów rozumienia i objaśniania świata. W dynamicznie zmieniającym się układzie powiązań społecznych, media społecznościowe stały się ważnym źródłem sensów, trwałym punktem odniesienia, który pozwala wielu użytkownikom uzyskać czasowe choćby panowanie nad płynną rzeczywistością. Stabilność będącą efektem przebywania jednostek w mniej lub bardziej trwałych układach współzależności coraz częściej zapewnia praktyka dzielenia się, bez której media społecznościowe nie mogłyby istnieć.
Among the many socio-cultural changes that digitisation processes are leading to, the new forms of sharing mediated through or organised around social media deserve attention. From a practice governed by a complex system of mutual obligations and expectations (group morality), sharing is drifting towards an algorithmically stimulated activity, the essence of which is not survival but addiction, selling, or the desire to show off. Despite the transformations stimulated by technology, sharing remains one of the most important (anchoring) socialising practices ensuring the survival of post-modern societies. Unlike in the pre-internet era, however, the process of integrating individuals into broader social wholes through sharing is organised around new patterns, new shared meanings, and alternative ways of understanding and explaining the world. In a dynamically changing setup of social connections, social media have become an important source of meaning, a permanent point of reference that allows many users to gain at least temporary control over a fluid reality. The stability resulting from individuals being in more or less permanent systems of interdependence is increasingly provided by the practice of sharing, without which social media could not exist.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers are seemingly ideally placed to mediate the successful socialisation of multilingual learners into the new school environment for two major reasons. Firstly, as they have effective command of both L1 and L2 and often have experience of living abroad, they tend to exhibit higher levels of openness to new situations, empathy and understanding of the difficulties faced by multilingual learners. Secondly, the English class can itself be a platform for mutual understanding where learners are able to develop both English communication skills and intercultural competence (cf. Hopp, Jakisch, Sturm, Becker & Thoma 2020; Krulatz, Neokleous & Dahl 2022). As English is the language of instruction, it also has the potential to maintain levels of multilingual competence among those learners who already speak English as their heritage language (Banasiak & Olpińska-Szkiełko 2021), e.g. migrant children returning from the UK/Ireland. Drawing on data from a larger project (Rokita-Jaśkow, Wolanin, Król-Gierat & Nosidlak 2022), which consisted of interviewing 23 primary school EFL teachers in various contexts, this paper analyses the possible factors that impact teacher agency in the socialisation of multilinguals. It has been found that teacher agency in that respect appears to stem from teachers’ plurilingual competence and prior teaching experience. Surprisingly, personal experiences of intercultural encounters (e.g. time spent living abroad) or verbalised empathy, had little impact on teacher agency. This finding implies that even language teachers find it difficult to put themselves in the position of the multilingual learner and need specialist training in order to work with multilingual learners, which may convey an important message for educational decision-makers with reference to the formulation of future teacher education guidelines and curricula.

This paper examines the family language policies in five case studies of immigrant families in Europe, focusing on the following emotions: Pride, Joy, Sadness and Fear. Families who immigrated from India and Laos to France, Sweden, Norway and Finland expressed their first and foremost emotions over the maintenance of their heritage languages in terms of language ideologies. The principal purpose of this paper is to explore critically the role of emotions of parents and of children regarding the maintenance or loss of the heritage language and the dominant position that the host language occupies in the framework of the family language policy. With an ethnographic approach, the principal tools were interviews, recording of conversations, participant observations and field notes, which yielded significant information on language attitudes, ideologies and practices toward the host-language and heritage language. Findings show that emotions of anxiety toward enfeeblement of the heritage language were common among parents, albeit not explicitly manifested in some families. Fear of losing the heritage language amounts to fear of losing linguistic and cultural identity over which some parents were frustrated, angry and helpless. Pride and joy were other affective displays, notably related to one’s command of the host languages or powerful languages like English.

Cet article analyse les jeux d’enfants dans Les Rougon-Macquart. Il adopte une typologie qui les classe en trois catégories : les jouets, les jeux symboliques et le bal d’enfants. Au-delà de leur fonction éducative et récréative, les jeux pratiqués par les enfants au sein de cette saga littéraire jouent un rôle complexe dans le développement narratif. Ils contribuent à la construction d’un effet de réel, à la création de moments-clés de l’intrigue, à l’exploration de la psychologie des personnages enfants et de leurs parents, à la relation parent/enfant et bien d’autres encore. En outre, l’auteur utilise les jouets et les jeux d’enfants pour nourrir sa réflexion sur l’influence conjointe de l’hérédité et du milieu sur les destins des personnages, en accord avec les principes du mouvement naturaliste. Cette approche offre un éclairage précieux sur la manière dont Zola exploite les jeux d’enfants comme des éléments narratifs et symboliques dans sa grande fresque littéraire.
This article examines children’s games in Les Rougon-Macquart while relying on a typology that includes toys, symbolic plays, and a children’s ball. In addition to their educational and recreational functions, childhood games play various narrative roles, such as constructing a referential universe, creating key moments in the plot, exploring the complexity of child and parental psychology, parent/child relationships and much more. Furthermore, the author, Émile Zola, employs toys and children’s games to inform his reflections on the joint influence of heredity and environment on the fates of characters, in alignment with the principles of the naturalist movement. This approach offers valuable insights into how Zola utilizes children’s games as narrative and symbolic elements within his grand literary tapestry.

This article analyzes the interaction between the careers of people working in artistic and intellectual worlds. Two ethnographic studies constitute the basis for the analysis of career building in connection with the careers of other actors. The concept of career coupling represents the process by which professional success is achieved through the forging of relationships between novice and elite actors. Career coupling in the social world of virtuoso musicians is compared to that of career coupling in the social world of elite scientists. It was found that both groups achieve status in a similar fashion by moving through a three-stage process: (1) matching; (2) active collaboration; and, (3) passive collaboration. It is argued that the analysis of career coupling developed here can also be transferred to other professional fields.

November 1936 saw the blockade of the University of Warsaw, an occupational strike organised by far-right students demanding the introduction of the so-called ‘ghetto benches’ for Jewish students. This article draws a social portrait of the ordinary participants in the blockade and analyses their motivations. I argue that the socialisation of youth into exemplary citizens of a modern nation-state created a fertile ground for far-right organisations and their demands. Moreover, the largest student association, the Fraternal Aid Society, became a space for self-organisation into extreme nationalist politics. Its leaders tapped into the positive motivations of youth, i.e. the search for a sense of belonging and the desire of individuals to fit into the normative order of the community. My examination of the blockade offers a unique insight into the academic background of the far-right and its means of political mobilisation.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is a theoretical diagnosis of the influence of the pace of recent civilisation changes on a selected fragment of the socialisation process in the family. The course of analysis is the specificity of the relationship between parents and adolescent children (aged 15-18), including an attempt to explore the modifications occurring in these areas resulting from the development of information technology. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem of this paper is an attempt to answer the question: To what extent do new inter- and intra-generational divisions – appearing as a result of rapid civilisation changes generated by the development of information technologies – modify the socialising dialogue in relations between parents and adolescent children? The research method used was a selective analysis of theoretical works and research reports from sociology, psychology, psychiatry, neurobiology and information technology. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article presents selected elements of the conceptual model used to analyse the world of contemporary generations. It includes the new division into the world of the present past and the world of the present future, together with their new inhabitants – people of the past and people of the future.  RESEARCH RESULTS: As a consequence of the increasingly deepening division of the world of generations, constructing a socialisation dialogue in the relationship between parents and adolescent children has become more complicated. The confrontational-verifying influence of intra-familial socialisation concerning the areas of secondary socialisation  is noticeably losing its significance. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The modifications of intergenerational relations within the family, occurring as a result of rapid civilisation changes, result in an “unfinished”, incomplete socialisation process of adolescent children, heading towards an unknown form of adulthood with this new cultural capital.
CEL NAUKOWY: Celem jest teoretyczna diagnoza wpływu tempa współczesnych przemian cywilizacyjnych na wybrany fragment przebiegu procesu socjalizacji w rodzinie. Tok analiz ukierunkowano na specyfikę relacji rodzice – dorastające dzieci (15-18 lat), w tym na próbę eksplanacji pojawiających się w tych obszarach modyfikacji stanowiących efekt rozwoju technologii informatycznych. PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Problem badawczy zawiera się w pytaniu: W jakich zakresach nowe między- i wewnątrzpokoleniowe podziały – pojawiające się na skutek szybkich przemian cywilizacyjnych generowanych rozwojem technologii informatycznych – modyfikują socjalizacyjny dialog w relacjach rodzice – dorastające dzieci? Jako metodę badawczą zastosowano selektywną analizę prac teoretycznych oraz raportów z badań z zakresu socjologii, psychologii, psychia- trii, neurobiologii i technologii informatycznych. PROCES WYWODU: W artykule zaprezentowano wybrane elementy modelu pojęciowego wykorzystywanego do analiz świata współczesnych pokoleń, w tym nowy podział na świat teraźniejszej przeszłości i świat teraźniejszej przyszłości wraz z zamieszkującymi je nowymi mieszkańcami – ludźmi przeszłości i ludźmi przyszłości.  WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: W konsekwencji wciąż pogłębiającego się podziału świata pokoleń konstruowanie socjalizacyjnego dialogu w relacjach rodzice – dorastające dzieci staje się trudniejsze i coraz bardziej skomplikowane. Konfrontacyjno-weryfikujący wpływ socjalizacji wewnątrzrodzinnej wobec obszarów socjalizacji wtórnej  zauważalnie traci na znaczeniu. WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE, REKOMENDACJE: Pojawiające się w następstwie szybkich przemian cywilizacyjnych modyfikacje wewnątrzrodzinnych relacji międzypokoleniowych skutkują „niedokoń- czonym”, niepełnym procesem socjalizacji dorastających dzieci, które z takim nowym kapitałem kulturowym zmierzają w stronę nieznanej nam formy dorosłości.

Artykuł osadzony jest w teoretycznej ramie socjologii feministycznej i transgender studies. Autorka odnosi się do problematyki transpłciowości w kontekście socjalizacji płciowej jako procesu realnie wpływającego na diagnozowanie transpłciowości, a także na przebieg życia, w tym na zainteresowania i wybory zawodowe osób transpłciowych. Tekst powstał w oparciu o wyniki analizy 18 wywiadów narracyjnych z transpłciowymi kobietami. W pierwszej części przedstawiono kwestie socjalizacji, socjalizacjipłciowej, tożsamości płciowej oraz transpłciowości, w nawiązaniu do podstawowych stanowisk teoretycznych. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono zjawisku passingu – termin ten funkcjonuje zarówno w żargonie osób transpłciowych, jak i w literaturze naukowej. W drugiej części tekstu ukazano wyniki analiz, dotyczących znaczenia przeciwnej do płci odczuwanej socjalizacji płciowej oraz stosunku transpłciowych kobiet do ról płciowych, w szczególności do idei passingu.
The article is set in the theoretical framework of feminist sociology and transgender studies. The author addresses the issue of transgender identity in the context of gender socialisation understood as a process which has real impact on the diagnosis of transgenderism, as well as on the life trajectory, including interests and career choices of transgender people. The article is based on the results of a close analysis of 18 narrative interviews with transgender women. In the first part the author interrogates such issues as: socialisation, gender socialisation, gender identity, and transgenderism. Particular attention will be paid to the phenomenon of passing – a term which functions both in the jargon of transgender people and in scientific literature. The second part of the article demonstrates the results of studies concerning the meaning of socialisation to the gender assigned at birth and transgender women’s attitudes towards gender roles, in particular towards the idea of passing.

Opis:
This paper identifies the most significant patterns of educational experience among members of the interwar Polish communist movement. The first part of the article covers the experiences that communists shared with other representatives of the social strata from which they originated: the reproduction of the social structure or their overcoming of it in the form of social advancement. It also discusses the importance of educational barriers and opportunities as factors facilitating the emergence of attitudes of radical contestation of the socio-political order. The second part identifies educational experiences that were directly related to involvement in an illegal, subversive and repressed political current, and the diverse, sometimes paradoxical consequences of that involvement for representatives of different social strata. It traces the transformations of the communist habitus and proposes the concept of ‘clandestine white-collar workers’. The article concludes that there were two patterns in the pursuit of education among the communists: acquiring a degree in revolution or for the sake of the revolution.

Artykuł poświęcony jest wybranym aspektom funkcjonowania młodzieży w międzywojennym Tarnowie w opinii lokalnej prasy. Główne źródło stanowiły ukazujące się w latach 1918–1939 na tamtym terenie wybrane periodyki. Dobór tytułów uwzględniał strukturę społeczno-etniczną miasta. Analiza zawartości pozwoliła odtworzyć charakter i treść oczekiwań formułowanych wobec młodych ludzi.
The article discusses selected aspects of the life of young people in interwar Tarnów as described in the local press. The principal source used in the paper are selected periodicals published in the city in the years 1918–1939. Their selection reflects the social and ethnic structure of Tarnów in the discussed period. The analysis of their contents has helped reconstruct the nature of the expectations towards the youth and how they were expressed in the press.

The human being has both an individual and a social nature, which indicates the necessity of taking into account in the process of the social engagement of the child both care for the child's own development (personalisation) and its orientation towards social life (socialisation), and this in every educational and socially engaging activity. In social engagement there is a justifiable need for both family care and support for the development of the child by the parents and the family, as well as for social (State) care, and the cooperation of these environments should take place without violating the rights of other persons or subjects entitled to upbringing – especially the family.

Syria’s civil war, which began in 2011, has been dubbed one of the bloodiest conflicts of the twenty-first century. A multitude of institutional, regional, and global efforts and activities in the shape of peace proposals, negotiations, diplomatic peace initiatives, and mediations have been put in place in an attempt to end the war. The goal of this research is to look at these peace mechanisms and the elements that function as undercurrents and/or obstacles to their implementation. It claims that a variety of actors, interests, and goals obstruct diverse peace processes. Furthermore, the complex intertwining of internal and external influences is critical to the success of many conflict management programs. The problems faced by many peace processes include the sordid backstories and operations of hidden hands such as the United States and Russia using the war as a pawn to conduct proxy fights including Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and other entities. The conclusion is that, while a political solution is an appropriate vehicle for resolving the quagmire, the effect of foreign interests and complicated internal elements that have a negative impact on political diplomacy may persist for some time. As a result, if a political approach is to be effective, it must take into account and synergize the numerous domestic and exogenous interests.
