Opis:
This paper tries to argue that Hungary has been the classical case for the decline of demo- cracy, including the marginalization and the state control of civil society that may be turned into the redemocratization efforts in the spirit of “bottom-up democratization”. This decline of democracy has been accomplished by the Orbán governments since 2010 given their two-thirds supermajority that has allowed them to introduce a new Constitution without national consent and without approval by referendum. The radical change in legislation has also concerned the regulation of civil society organizations and the freedom of the media. As a result, a strong resistance has emerged against this increasing authoritarian rule, pro- ducing a series of democratic innovations and has promised a second try of democratization.

Opis:
The paper characterizes and analyzes the health cooperative society as a concept to develop medical care in the rural areas of the Second Republic of Poland. There were two models of medical care in the rural areas at that time: the health cooperative societies and the health centers. The health centers were supported by the state, contrary to the health cooperative societies. These cooperative societies were an interesting attempt to improve medical care in the country. They were established by the citizens on their own initiative.

Opis:
Currently, we are witnessing the second la belle epoque characterised by huge economic and social inequalities. Striving for a good state of society aims to reduce the inequalities conditioned by access to knowledge. One of the methods to reach this goal can consist of the conscious shaping of knowledge transfer between particular groups of knowledge agents. representing diverse, often overlapping, social and organisational categories. The purpose of this study is to check what sub-processes of knowledge transfer are implemented in specific groups of knowledge agents and what their context is from the perspective of the tools used, the main principles and the standards of behaviour. The main research hypothesis is that the course of knowledge transfer process depends on the fact of which groups of knowledge agents it concerns. Using the method of critical analysis and surveys supported by in-depth interviews, it was determined that knowledge sharing is the domain of professionals and the intergenerational dimension of knowledge transfer. Knowledge acquisition is most often carried out at the level of specialists' relations with other employees and at the intergenerational level. Knowledge sharing is a domain of specialists, and usually takes place during their contacts with other employees, while knowledge dissemination is the prime sub-process of the hierarchical dimension of knowledge transfer.

Recalling the activity of the prewar State Office for Physical Education and Civil Defence Training seems necessary in view of the increased interest of the society, mainly young people, in defence matters and patriotic past. Obviously, the circumstances and conditions have changed significantly but the idea and organizational structure of the State Office for Physical Education and Civil Defence Training seems to be still present today. It is essential that the activities of both the State Office for Physical Education and Civil Defence Training and its local structures did not impose and did not monopolize the defence commitment of the society but only provided all the groups of the society with material and organizational aid related to civil defence training.

Ulrich Beck is a famous German sociologist who has examined the concepts of risk society and the second modernity. Both terms were described by Beck as opposite to industrial society and class society. Recently, Dean Curran has attempted to overcome this opposition, and reconcile hermeneutics of classes and the risk society. This article examines the exchange of arguments between Ulrich Beck and Dean Curran and treats this exchange as a pretext to systematically identify those parts of the theory of risk society that cannot be reconciled with class theory. We examine how Marxian and Weberian theories of classes can effectively explain the phenomenon of second modernity.

Opis:
The author defines “war panic” and analyzes specific manifestations of the phenomenon: the war panics that Poland experienced repeatedly after the Second World War. The author demonstrates that for Polish society the Second World War was the most traumatic event of the twentieth century, and that it left behind not only the human losses and a sea of ruins, but enormous deposits of fear. These ap- peared above all in flight behavior, the hoarding of shop goods, and the withdrawal of money from banks in order, for instance, to buy jewelry – every time the pattern was the same. The first war panic occurred already in 1945. Until the end of the 1960s, Poles were convinced that a third world war was just around the corner. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan also induced a panic. Poles were afraid of war, but war was also used to threaten them. During the Stalinist period, the threat was of American imperialism, and in the 1970s, of German “militarists” and “revanchists.” The Second World War did not entirely end in 1945. The author claims that we can speak of its long-term, post-war continuation.

Opis:
The article shows the mutual relationships prevailing between the society and the resurgent army in the period of the Second Republic of Poland. In the period of captivity, resentment and hostility toward the occupying army arose in the Polish society, which were subconsciously transferred to the resurgent Polish Army. As a result, the military did not enjoy too much popularity. Changing the strategists’ mindset, regarding the conduct of future wars, forced the leaders of the reborn Polish state to create strong ties between the army and the society. Educational programs, undertaken by the military, combating functioning illiteracy, participating in patriotic celebrations, supporting the construction of schools and preparing didactic aids for them, feeding children in schools, assistance in the construction of roads and bridges, the fight against unemployment and helping the public in the mitigation of various disasters brought tangible benefits to the army in terms of changing the way the society perceived it. Efforts on the part of the military were not only noticed but also rewarded by the society, which began to see the military service as an honor. As proof of this, due to the difficult economic situation in the state, the society paid generously through funding weapons and soldier’s equipment for many military units, as gesture of solidarity with the army. The outbreak of the war in 1939 showed how many positive changes occurred between the army and the society within such a short period.

Opis:
World War II and its political consequences resulted in a demographic shift in Lower Silesia. It took place to an extent never before seen in any part of Europe. Due to international decisions concerning the changes of its borders, Lower Silesia was once again integrated with Poland. At the same time the German inhabitants living in the region were obliged to leave. Polish people replaced them coming from other parts of Poland as well as from former Polish territories which had been incorporated by the Soviet Union. The immigrants were influenced by the cultures of the places of their origin. They differed in almost every field of everyday life, so in their new towns they met people with various integrating capabilities, contrasting points of view, political preferences and attitudes. That phenomenon was understood as a coexistence of the representatives of at least two different cultures whose members perceive the differences between them. Prevalence of so many distinct cultures in one area and the influences they had on each other led to the creation of specific cultural and social relations among the groups and their members. The situation obliged the settlers to overcome their particular attitudes and competences to live and communicate with new neighbours. Significant historical processes had influenced in a noticeable way the lives of people from every single town and village in Lower Silesia. One example of the place chosen by the immigrants to Lower Silesia is Dobroszyce. The incoming people created from the very beginning a society which was supposed to live in multicultural reality.

Opis:
Classicism, beginning in the second half of the 18th c., is by no means an obvious revival of antiquity. Still up to the 18th c., its legacy was regarded as an undeniable tradition that did not actually need to be explained in detail. However, with an increasingly conscious reflection on antiquity, there was also a growing conviction that it was a model – but an unsurpassed one. This shifted this tradition into the past. At the same time, from the mid-18th c. onwards, the desire for direct contact with ancient monuments, no longer only in Rome, but also in Greece and in the newly discovered Pompeii, caused the vision of antiquity to become more complicated. Connoisseurs, collectors, artists have become the very ones who introduce anxiety and challenge the existing image of Greco-Roman antiquity. Instead of the certainty of immersion in a tradition that is still relevant, a process of reception of antiquity as distant, pagan, baffling has begun.

Opis:
The article aims to present the research interests of docent Wiktor Ormicki - a geographer and lecturer at Jagiellonian University. These revolved around the aspects of the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic and manifested, among other things, in his habilitation thesis entitled Życie gospodarcze Kresów Wschodnich Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej (The Economic Life of the Eastern Borderlands of the Republic of Poland, Kraków 1929) His interests comprised the migration issues in the northeastern voivodeships. Ormicki left notes from his research trips to the eastern borderland, which were an interesting source for the analysis of the socio-economic life in the eastern provinces of the Second Polish Republic. He described the daily activities and customs of the inhabitants of these regions. He listed economic facilities (including brickyards, distilleries, and sawmills) operating in the places he visited. He also paid attention to the towns and villages and the natural environment at the eastern border. Both the travel notes and Ormicki’s scientific works are a valuable source for researchers of everyday life and the economy of the eastern border of interwar Poland.
