Opis:
The paper presents cases, found in Polish academic life, of exceptional and moving violations of moral standards bound with the ideal of a scholar. These cases were made public by actors themselves (Wincenty Lutoslawski, Eugeniusz Romer), uncompromising historians (Henryk Barycz, Stanislaw Pigon) or widely known decision-makers (Rev. Bronislaw Zongollowicz). They argued that the ethics of scholars has not only normative character, but also a descriptive one, in many cases different that normative decisions. So conceived normative ethics should encompass the intimate life, particularly if it were made public due to a scandal. Such a scandal should call not condemnation, but intellectual reflection.

The issue in the title is known and is being analyzed for a long time, however its complexity makes the setting of both – the future of it and contemporary form – emerge a lot of questions marks. I do not intend to leave most of them aside. I do make an attempt however to present its complexity and as well the importance in the reflextion upon life and activity of scholars. In these remarks I do recall several ways of presenting it and do make an attempt to stress out those of research possibilities which may lead to interesting outcomes. In the end part of the remakrs I do present some of them. I treat this step as an invitation to further discussion on the sensibility and anger of scholars.

The article analyses various contemporary codes of scholar ethics which seem to concentrate on minor and pathological problems of scholar’s work (such as plagiarism) and pass over the crucial and universal moral principles of intellectuals. Instead, the article offers the alternative set of ethical rules, which refer to classical Aristotelian moral philosophy as well as to medieval Parisian university tradition. The author underlines such values as worth of truth, reliability of research and moral equipment of the scholar. These values constitute the basis of sketching “scholar’s Decalogue”, i.e., ten principle rules, which should be kept and obeyed by every scholar and scientist.

Three types of scholars are identified: precursor, savant, and instigator. Scholars produce creative and seminal ideas that serve to advance science. In parallel, three types of researchers are singled out: replicator, erudite, and outsider. Their work lacks creativity and originality, being mostly imitative and derivative. Science (the body of knowledge) is advanced by some, and hampered by other factors.

The New School for Social Research was founded as an institution where intellectuals and artists could openly exchange ideas and theories, free from censure or political pressure. The school's founders believed that in a world engulfed by political turmoil and modern warfare, the free exchange of different ideas regarding politics, aesthetics and other intellectual pursuits was key to ensuring a just and sane world. The founders based the structure of The New School on the German Volkshochschulen, a school model that stressed the importance of adult education and a diversity of intellectual and interdisciplinary pursuits. Since its inception, The New School has maintained close ties with European ideas and philosophies of Rousseau, Kant, Goethe, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud, among many others. Sensing a dire need to provide safe haven for many of Europe's scholars and intellectuals, Alvin Johnson established a new graduate department in 1933 (coinciding with Hitler's appointment to German Chancellor), called the University in Exile. With the financial assistance of the Rockefeller Foundation and other philanthropy groups, the University in Exile was founded as a new graduate division within The New School and, more importantly, as a rescue program. Nearly two hundred European scholars and professors received visas and teaching jobs in the U.S. from the University in Exile. While many of them taught at The New School, there was never any stipulation from the University in Exile that they were required to do so. Alvin Johnson's main goal was simply to get people out of harm's way.

The paper presents selected results of a study on the religious views of 279 Polish scholars with a doctoral or higher degree. The percentage of scholars who declared belief in God was 56.3%. The four groups with the highest indices were chemists (80%), geographers and Earth scientists (76.2%), mathematicians and information technology specialists (73.1%), and medical scientists (64.5%). A small proportion of respondents (6.5%) chose the following option: “I don’t believe in a personal God but I believe in a higher power of some kind.” The percentages of atheists and agnostics were 18.3% and 7.2%, respectively. The subjects’ views on the relationship between science and religion were categorized according to the Barbour’s typology (Barbour, 1990). The largest proportion of the subjects (41.9%) denied the inevitability of conflict between science and religion; 13% held the opposite view. Some scholars (19.6%) expressed the view that science and religion should be treated as independent areas of inquiry. The relationship of dialog seemed to be the best form of their coexistence to 2% respondents, while 3.6% were in favor of the cooperation of science and religion in building a comprehensive worldview.

In common views scholars belong to a group of people either non-believing in the existence of God and his creational powers, or at least distancing themselves from several of such beliefs which is shared by the majority of the society. The research in this matter shows that this issue is quite diverse when put into practice, also in such a leading in scientific achievements country like the United States. Although this research confirms that the major part of American scholars is either people declaring their non-faith in God, or at least distancing themselves in a significant way from it, there are many (both in social and natural sciences) of them who accept beliefs which seem to be in a striking contradiction with the knowledge on man and the natural world. One of such people recalled in these remarks is Alvin C. Planting. His argument with Daniel Dennett shows how far the standards of scientific correctness of thought accepted by American scholars might differ.

Meta-glottodidactic discourse is the area of academic discourse which enables one to develop and explicitly present general glottodidactic conceptions. This, however, is not a characteristic of didactic discourse concerned with foreign language teaching/learning and its optimization. It can be claimed that in their meta-glottodidactics discourse Polish language teaching specialists show their epistemological identity as scholars, which stems from their intellectual autonomy on the one hand and their glottodidactic community affiliation on the other. The present article talks about the discourse manifestations of Polish glottodidactics specialists’ intellectual autonomy, which are related to their epistemological choices and ways of justifying them. Given the lack of consensus about the basic epistemological issues within the glottodidactic community, scholars’ intellectual choices as well as their justifications can be varied and highly distinctive. In a qualitative comparative analysis of meta-glottodidactic discourse of two Polish glottodidactics specialists, the author of the article identifies the factors contributing to the diversity of Polish meta-glottodidactic discourse. She also attempts to explain why this particular type of discourse could encourage dialog within the Polish glottodidactic community, which might become a driving force behind the development of contemporary glottodidactics.

The academic community was and still is a community of scholars taking various positions. Problematic was and still is the changing of ways we set these posi- tions in both, in relation to a long lasting academic tradition and in a much short- er period of academic activity of particular scholars. Some of these ways did show in a greater extent its own usability and some in lesser. In these remarks I make the attempt to point out those who did work out well and in some way still do and which ones should be history by now. However it is not all. Relatively recently ways of positioning of scholars occurred that are in some perspectives innovative and widely applied (also in Poland). Nevertheless they do have in the academic millieu its followers and radical opponents. The bibliometric positioning of scho- lars is one of those ways.

The article reviews the 2018 IGLP Workshop organized in Bangkok, Thailand by the Institute for Global Law and Policy (IGLP), Faculty of Law of Harvard University. The IGLP is a collaborative faculty effort to nurture innovative approaches to global policy in the face of a legal and institutional architecture manifestly ill-equipped to address the most urgent global challenges. The IGLP explores the ways in which legal regimes of global poverty, conflict, injustice and inequality are reproduced and what might be done in response. Its aim is to provide a platform at Harvard for new thinking about international legal and institutional arrangements, with particular emphasis on ideas and issues of importance to the global South. The IGLP most important and innovative programme remains the IGLP Workshop, initiated in 2010. The Workshop has become a world renowned global center for faculty development in the fields of law and policy. It aims to strengthen the next generation of scholars by placing them in collaboration with their global peers and introducing them to cutting edge research across a variety of disciplines.

In 1907 Lund University for the first time established a position for Slavonic Philology. Sigurd Agrell (1888–1937) obtained this position after a fierce competition with the already renowned scholar Tore Torbiörnsson. Sigurd Agrell had gathered an imposing material during several summer vacations in Zakopane and in 1908 he published the dissertation Aspektänderung und Aktionsartbildung (extended version was published by PAU in 1918). In it he introduced concepts on verbal morphology that for decades played a pivotal role in the description of Slavic grammar. WWI interrupted Agrell’s contact with Polish scholars. During the 1910s his main interest seems to have been Slavic historical grammar. He published several seminal papers in which he often polemizised with Tore Torbiörnsson whom he expected to see as his main rival in the competition for the professorship in Uppsala. As the chair in Uppsala unexpectedly went to Richard Ekblom, the Lund University created Chair of Slavic Philology, which Agrell held from 1921 until his death in 1937. Sigurd Agrell’s carrier was from the beginning aimed upon the Polish language but after he had obtained the chair in Lund his interests became more esotheric. He published numerous papers on the origin and symbolics of the runic alphabet and presented the audacious hypothesis that the runic characters bear traces of a mitraic cult in the eastern part of the Roman empire. Sigurd Agrell was one of the most colourful academics in Lund during the 1920s and 1930s and the anecdots about his witty sayings and bizarre pranks are numerous. In 1945 Knut-Olof Falk (1906–1990) was appointed Professor of Slavic Philology. Falk had been lecturer of Swedish in Kraków and in Kaunas in the 1930s. Already as a student he was inspired by the professor of scandinavistic philology Jöran Sahlgren who had laid the foundations of the so-called Swedish onomastic methodology. During his stays in Lithuania and Northeastern Poland Falk made thorough investigations in the waternames in the borderland between Slavic and Baltic. It resulted in his dissertation Wody wigierskie i huciańskie50 (Waterbody Names in the Counties of Huta and Wigry). In 1957 Knut-Olof Falk was invited by the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) to continue the onomastic studies in Northeastern Poland, initially as a part of the Kompleksowa Ekspedycja Jaćwieska (Complex Yatvingian Expedition), and from 1964 as leader of an independent group of Swedish scientists and students, the so-called Szwedzka Ekspedycja Jaćwieska (Swedish Yatvingian Expedition), under the auspices of PAN. The work of the expedition was carried out yearly up to the late 1970s. The so called Swedish methodology in onomastics imposes on the scientist thorough investigation of the landscape, study of nameforms used by old informants and material from historic documents. Using a combination of these methods Falk revealed that the lion’s share of the waternames in old documents e.g. Regestr sPisania Iezior…1569 is of Baltic (viz. Yatvingian) origin and later underwent slavization. Examples of the methodology applied in the field work are given in the article.

The author carries out a summary of the Politics and Society, a scientific journal which has existed for ten years. The person of Prof. Henryk Cimek is called because his organizational contribution to the political science at the Univeristy of Rzeszów should be appreciated. Prof. Cimek was the founder of both Department of Politology and the Politics and Society. The main part of the text discusses the features of the journal and its scientific contribution. A notable asset is articles based on original research undertaken by both young and experienced scholars. Publishing various kinds of scientific texts also deserves attention. Because the state of political science in Poland is the author’s primary concern, he supports the editors’ effort to bring closer its distinguished co-founders and even to archive the development of the discipline. The text contains important suggestions for younger academics who publish in the Politics and Society. At the end the author appeals for critical considerations to improve the quality of the journal in another ten-year period.

This is an empirical quantitative analysis of the official data coming from the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The foreign scholars in Poland at the beginning of the 21st century are presented in the context of the global “brain circulation” or migration of highly qualified specialists. The second context is the present Polish academic system. In this paper we discuss characteristics of the analysed data base, universities and colleges where the foreign scholars are usually employed, the academic disciplines they represent, the relations between the number of foreign scholars and the institutional prestige of schools employing them, and conclusions on what we can and cannot learn from the data set analysed here.

The following paper aims to respond to some questions raised by L. Misiarczyk in his paper.2 Firstly, the author refers an opinion concerning shortage of studies about demonology and exorcisms in New Testament within Polish theological literature. The second part contains an analysis of the behavior of possessed people as described in New Testament accounts. Third part of the study endeavors to answer a question why the Gospel of John and Paul’s Letters do not mention demoniac possessions and exorcisms. Fourth chapter attempts to describe biblical anthropology that could help to understand whether biblical authors distinguished possessions from mental or physical maladies. Fifth and concluding part discusses suggestion of three possible ways of structuring the texts describing demons. While refuting some of the theses expressed by L. Misiarczyk, the paper underlines a number of valuable assets and topics presented by the author, that yet need to be discussed and reviewed.

Basing on the Norwid Bibliography compiled by Wacław Borowy (1946), the author observes that one-fifth of all studies on Norwid in the years 1920-1939 were the work of Vilna people. The author starts his review with Stanisław Cywiński, a Norwid student par excellence. Cywiński worked on a study of Norwid for the monumental publication Wiek XIX. Sto lat myśli polskiej [`The 19th Century. A Hundred Years of Polish Thought'], but vol. 10, which was to have included Norwid, never appeared. What did appear, however, was Cywiński's edition of Norwid's selected poems (Wybór poezyj, 1924) in the Biblioteka Narodowa series, which made it possible to introduce Norwid into schools. The bibliography of Cywiński's Norwid studies, both major and minor ones, comprises thirty-six items. The author continues by reminding the reader of Stanisław Pigoń's source notes on Norwid from the time of Pigoń's Vilna professorship and of the publications on Norwid written during his Cracow professorship and reviewed in the Vilna press. The author then goes on to list the works on Norwid written by graduates of the Stefan Batory University: Wanda Nowodworska(-Achremowiczowa), Zygmunt Falkowski, Władysław Arcimowicz, Janina Budkowska. The new Stefan Batory University professor who succeeded Pigoń in the Vilna chair, Manfred Kridl, accorded Norwid the position of the fourth great Polish poet in his Literatura polska XIX wieku [`Polish Literature of the 19th Century']. Konrad Górski, who lectured by the side of Kridl, contributed somewhat to Norwid studies, too. It was such climate that surrounded Irena Sławińska, later an eminent Norwid scholar, in her formative years.

The issue of criticism and dogmatism is one of those problems which various sciences contended with in the past and which is difficult to deal with today. It may seem that criticism and dogmatism are completely mutually exclusive, but the history of sciences shows that in the past they constituted two options mutually exclusive in one respect and complementary in the other. I present here such a mutual exclusiveness and complementarity using examples from the area of philosophy and theology. I am convinced, however, that this situation is also present in other disciplines.

In these remarks I do undertake one more time the attempt to answer the following question: what do agnostics really want? This issue is so complicated that even the agnostics themselves had great trouble in delivering the answer. This is also related to these agnostics, such as the recalled here Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, and Stephen W. Hawking, who belong to the greatest format of scholars. The agnostics are being distanced from, both the atheists and theists. However they do judge differently their views it is important that as well the first as the latter ones may appreciate what stands behind agnosticism and this might be very variable.

The paper Słowacki Among Scholars is an attempt to look critically at contemporary research concerning Słowacki's work. It presents and assesses scholarly publications ordered according to the following principle: presentation of the successors and continuators of the so-called “Lublin school” of research on romantic literature (Seweryn, Pyczek, Kuczera-Chachulska); and then proving that re-editing old works on Słowacki (Bychowski, Słowacki and His Soul. A psychoanalytic study; Kleiner, Juliusz Słowacki, the History of His Work; Kowalczykowa, Słowacki; Treugutt, Beniowski. The Crisis of the Romantic Individualism) is appropriate. A special stress was has been put on presenting Toszyński's book The King-Spirit Inn. The Diary of Juliusz Słowacki's Last Years and Gacowa's work Juliusz Słowacki. A Bibliography of Polish Literature. A New Korbut. Hence the present treatise assumes a meta-scholarly shape and is a peculiar state of research; however, it focuses only on a quite subjective choice of the presented material. Reading contemporary works on Juliusz Słowacki's works allows the statement that up till now his work has provoked a lot of controversy and polemics. Scholarly investigation most often focuses on Słowacki's mystical works. Also very often it can be noticed that the interpretative plane of Słowacki's literary works is largely influenced by his biography.

Wprowadzenie metody realizmu socjalistycznego do twórczości muzycznej w Polsce w latach 50. ubiegłego stulecia, traktowane przez polityków jako jeden z kolejnych etapów budowania społeczeństwa socjalistycznego – wyzwolonego z konfliktów klasowych, implikowało praktyczne rozwiązania w zakresie warsztatu kompozytorskiego. Od kompozytorów oczekiwano: 1) przewartościowania hierarchii gatunków i form muzycznych (oparcia twórczości na formach wokalnych i programowych oraz formach muzyki użytkowej); 2) wykorzystania (w warstwie słownej lub programowej) aktualnej tematyki, wspierającej proces kształtowania nowego ustroju; 3) nawiązania w utworach do tradycji narodowej i europejskiej (z wyłączeniem elementów tradycji XIX-wiecznej) oraz polskiej muzyki ludowej. Opera Bunt żaków Tadeusza Szeligowskiego była pierwszym dziełem operowym skomponowanym w Polsce po roku 1945. Jej twórcy zostali odznaczeni – w roku 1951 – Nagrodą Państwową I stopnia. Prapremiera dzieła, która odbyła się we Wrocławiu, oraz kolejne przedstawienia w Warszawie, Krakowie, Poznaniu, Moskwie i Dreźnie zostały entuzjastycznie przyjęte przez słuchaczy i krytyków muzycznych. Utwór przedstawiano jako wzór realizacji w twórczości muzycznej w Polsce metody realizmu socjalistycznego. Równocześnie wskazywano na wysokie walory artystyczne oraz dużą atrakcyjność widowiskową dzieła. Artykuł stanowi próbę opisania opery w kontekście polityki kulturalnej w Polsce w latach 1945– 1956. Analiza dzieła wynika z przyjęcia założeń rosyjskiego narodowego dramatu muzycznego i obejmuje: fabułę opery – ze wskazaniem na źródła konfliktów, głównego bohatera, formę dramatyczno-muzyczną, elementy operowe, melodykę i harmonikę, teksty oraz motywy przewodnie. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych analiz można stwierdzić, że realizacja wytycznych zgłaszanych kompozytorom przez polityków, działaczy partyjnych, odbywa się w analizowanym dziele na trzech poziomach: dramaturgicznym, językowym i muzycznym. Opera Bunt żaków stanowi swego rodzaju odpowiedź jej twórców (kompozytora i librecisty) na (posługując się słowami ówczesnej propagandy) „zapotrzebowanie społeczne”. Tym samym utwór wpisuje się w proces ideologizacji kultury muzycznej zachodzący w Polsce w latach 50. XX wieku.
The introduction of the socialist realism method to music composition in Poland in the 1950s, considered by politicians as one of the successive stages of building a socialist society – liberated from class conflicts – implied practical solutions in the field of compositional technique. The composers were expected to: 1) re-evaluate the hierarchy of musical genres and forms (the need for musical creativity to be based on vocal and programme forms, as well as forms of utility music); 2) use (in the verbal or programme layer) topical subjects supporting the process of shaping the new system; 3) make references in their works to national and European tradition (excluding the elements of the 19th century tradition) and to Polish folk music. Tadeusz Szeligowski’s opera Bunt żaków (The scholars’ revolt) was the first opera to be composed in Poland after 1945. Its creators were awarded the Level I State Prize in 1951. The preview of the piece, which took place in Wrocław, and subsequent performances in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań, Moscow and Dresden were enthusiastically received by listeners and music critics. The piece was presented as a model realisation of the socialist realism method in musical creation in Poland. High artistic values and spectacular attractiveness of the piece were pointed out as well. The article attempts to describe the opera in the context of cultural policy in Poland in the period 1945–1956. The analysis of the piece results from the adoption of the assumptions of the Russian national musical drama and includes: the plot of the opera - with a focus on the sources of conflicts, the main character, the dramatic and musical form, opera elements, melodics and harmonies, texts and leitmotifs. On the basis of the conducted analyses, it can be stated that the implementation of the instruc- tions issued by politicians and party activists to the composers is performed in the piece in question on three levels: dramaturgical, linguistic and musical. The opera The scholars’ revolt constitutes a kind of response of its creators (composer and librettist) to a specific “social demand” (in the words of the propaganda of that time). Thus, the piece is a part of the process of the ideologization of musical culture taking place in Poland in the 1950s.

The article deals with the problems of Comenius’ pansophism in his interpretation and in the research of selected contemporary Polish scholars. One of the significant differences between the author of the above dissertation and other contemporary researchers is the treatment of pansophism as a primary concept in relation to didactic solutions. The arguments cited in the dissertation justify the importance of pansophism as the basis of Comenius’ work. The characteristics of pansophism present in synthesis the richness of its meanings that are not commonly perceived in the source literature. Authors who pondered over this issue have noticed its historical evolution. However, pansophism is not a historical artifact, but carries numerous consequences that, at least in part, are close to contemporary trends in scientific research.

The opinions of scholars about their own academic and literary achievements, their evaluation of the state of science and scientific writing as well as tips addressed to the young adepts of science are an important source of information about the history of science and scientific writing. While discussing the issue of a scientific book and the scientific publishing movement, such statements deserve closer attention of bibliologists. The article presents the views and recommendations of a prominent biologist Jan Tur (1875–1942) that concern writing and publishing scientific works and are included in his book Nauka i uczony (The science and a scholar). In the light of the condition of the contemporary movement of scientific publication, the scientist’s opinions from over 100 years ago on the necessity of writing productivity, languages and types of the scientific publication as well as collectivity of works become up-to-date and stimulate for discussion.

The purpose of this article is to examine whether the work of Hermogenes can be useful in the analysis of the media. The Polish translation of the Byzantine textbook becomes an opportunity to reflect on the universality of the principles of creating persuasive messages. According to Hermogenes, rhetoric is the practical, civic skill of persuasion on important matters. Today, his ideas can be applied to television news. His textbook teaches us how to analyse the structure of television programmes, how to find – at a verbal and visual level – rhetorical figures.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the most important methodological issues related to the study of ‘academic migration’, which we have encountered while preparing a research project on foreign-born academics in Poland. These issues are presented in the context of the migration of other highly skilled workers. Many of the analysed articles which concern migration of the highly skilled fall into methodological traps. Some do not take into account important cultural variables; others are concentrated on very specific problems, and – by employing sophisticated statistical techniques – provide conclusions of very limited generality. We start our analysis with the discussion of the most common research problems. Then we move on to discussing sources of data and methodologies. The last part summarizes the main advantages and disadvantages of various methodological approaches often employed in academic migration studies. This study allows us to outline our above-mentioned research proposal. Drawing on this example we show how a qualitative research project may add to current knowledge concerning the group in question. Nevertheless, this subject is diffi cult per se, and some challenges seem impossible to overcome.

The paper will attempt to provide an ethical reflection upon abuses by a thesis supervisor that may occur in interpersonal relationships between a student and his or her supervisor. The abuses will be considered from the perspective of the academic ethos. In this the author will focus upon the actual notion of ethosand values which are considered as constituent for the ethos of scholars. In the second part of the paper the author will reflect on which of the thesis supervisor’s attitudes constitute a betrayal of these values.

The first part of the paper is dedicated to Wincenty Pol’s occasional poems, dedicated to poets and poetry, and on that basis, it is possible to reconstruct the author’s perception of the situation of poets and poetry, as well as their role in society deprived of political identity. The second area of discussion are Pol’s works, which are addressed to scholars and, at the same time, emphasise the significance of their activity for the spiritual condition of the Poles, and indicate the originality of the poet’s (and an active researcher’s) reflections in relation to individual and collective research initiatives.

According to European Landscape Convention (2000), landscape is an area perceived by people, whose character is the result of the activity and interaction between natural and/or human factors. Landscape influences quality of people’s life, irrespective of the place they stay at: in a town, in the countryside, in the areas of great natural value or polluted, beautiful and ordinary – everyday areas. As the most important demand, protection of quality and character of landscape is coming into prominence. Landscape is treated here as an individual within properly identified regional features. Landscape is classified according to evaluation of its character. This assessment is based on identification of specific attributes of the landscape that differentiate it from other landscapes. Another way of classification of landscapes is designating types and conditions of: changes introducing into the landscape and development of investments. Experience of the landscape, it means its perception, plays a crucial role here. The perception is usually multisensoric, with dominance of eyesight (visual impulses) but in some conditions it may be dominated by other senses, eg. sense of hearing (when noise is especially loud) or sense of smell (in the case of unpleasant odour). Along with visual impulses, sound impulses have also great importance for landscape perception. In the article, results of survey on life’s quality and cultural landscape were shown. The survey were carried out in the years 2000-2007 among inhabitants of the Lublin voivodship. At the end of the work some prospects for landscape researches were also suggested.

Na podstawie stu wywiadów pogłębionych udziela on odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jakim stopniu urodzeni za granicą pracownicy naukowi czują się Polakniami oraz jak bardzo są częścią polskiej wspólnoty naukowej, a także analizuje, na czym opiera się ich poczucie przynależności do tych zbiorowości. Badanie pokazało, że podczas gdy uczestnicy wywiadów relatywnie rzadko czuli się Polkami i Polakami, to często deklarowali przynależność do polskiej wspólnoty naukowej. Sposób, w jaki prezentowali swoje miejsce w obrębie obu tych wspólnot, każe zadać pytanie o adekwatność ogólnej kategorii „insiderów”, ponieważ urodzeni za granicą pracownicy akademiccy okazali się bardzo zróżnicowaną zbiorowością. Niektórzy z nich traktowali Polskę instrumentalnie – jako etap w karierze naukowej, lecz byli też tacy, którzy zostawali polskimi patriotami. Ci ostatni, dość niespodziewanie, optowali za nauką lokalną, nie wspierając umiędzynarodowienia.
The paper discusses the issue of the national identity of foreign-born academic employees working in Poland. Based on 100 in-depth interviews, it answers the question ‘to what extent foreign-born researchers feel Polish and declare to be a part of the Polish academic community,’ and analyses why do they feel like insiders. While the interviewees relatively rarely felt Polish, they quite often declared belonging to the Polish academic community. The way they presented their place within these two communities raises the question of the appropriateness of the general category of 'insiders', because foreign-born academics turned out to be a very diverse community. Some of them treated Poland instrumentally – as a stage of their academic careers, but some became Polish patriots. Paradoxically, the latter opted for local science without supporting internationalization.

Finding by Piotr Szalsza two German language stories signed with the name “Bruno Schulz” could not be ignored by the editors of Schulz/Forum. Not yet recovered from the shock caused by the 14th issue, we are again facing a possible revelation. Unlike, however, in the case of the story titled “Undula” of 1922, which leaves no doubt that it is an early work by the author of The Cinnamon Shops, even if he preferred to use a penname, the question of the authorship of the two stories published in the Cetinjer Zeitung in 1917 and 1918 seems much more complicated. Perhaps without more research in the archives its resolution will be impossible. We asked four Schulz scholars for their opinions about the texts: Stefan Chwin, Włodzimierz Bolecki, Jerzy Jarzębski, Rolf Fieguth, and Katarzyna Lukas.

Artykuł został poświęcony encyklopedii Nachrichten von Schriftstellern und Künstlern aus dem Teschner Fürstenthum (1810), dziełu cieszyńskiego uczonego, byłego jezuity Leopolda Jana  Szersznika (1747-1814). Encyklopedyczne opracowanie na 220 stronach zawiera artykuły hasłowe poświęcone 109 postaciom związanym z regionem cieszyńskim. Są wśród nich zarówno rdzenni cieszynianie, jak i osoby przybyłe tu i działające w późniejszym okresie swego życia. W gronie tym znaleźć można teologów, kaznodziejów, filozofów, przyrodników, lekarzy, historyków, pisarzy, artystów, prawników oraz przedstawicieli innych profesji, w tym również uczonych niepiśmiennych.

Artykuł omawia dzieło Fryderyka Augusta Schmidta, będące pierwszym wydanym w języku polskim leksykonem uczonych polskich. Ukazało się ono w 1766 roku nakładem Michała Grölla w Warszawie. Znacznie poszerzona wersja ukazała się we Lwowie w roku 1846, z francuską z błędną datą 1766 (powinno być 1763) i niemiecką z 1768 roku. Regularny wykaz osób, których nazwał „uczeni i sławą zaszczyceni” wymienia autor począwszy od 1138 roku. Wśród nich są osoby świeckie i duchowne, a tych ostatnich także zakonnicy. Właśnie osobom duchownym autor artykuł poświęca szczególną uwagę.
The article discusses a work by Frederic August Schmidt, i.e. the first lexicon of Polish scholars published in the Polish language. The work was issued in 1766 by Michał Gröll in Warsaw. A considerably extended version was released in Lviv in 1846, with an erroneous French date 1766 (correct: 1763) and a German date in 1768. A systematic list of persons which the author refers to as „learned and famous persons” opens with the year 1138. The catalogue includes lay persons and clergymen alike, the latter also including monastic orders. It is the clergy that receives the author’s special attention.

We wprowadzeniu przedstawiono zarys społecznego kontekstu interesującej nas tutaj lokalnej, polskiej sytuacji. Ten kontekst to współczesne migracje wysokokwalifikowanych kadr, a w szczególności globalizacja świata nauki. W artykule zaprezentowano charakterystykę badanego zbioru danych; kraje, z których pochodzą zatrudnieni w polskim systemie akademickim uczeni; uczelnie, na których są oni najczęściej zatrudniani w Polsce; dyscypliny naukowe, które reprezentują; zależności między narodowością cudzoziemców a miejscem ich zatrudnienia w polskim systemie akademickim; związki między liczbą zatrudnianych cudzoziemców a miejscem danej uczelni w głównych rankingach polskich szkół wyższych i w końcu konkluzje dotyczące tego, czego można i czego nie można dowiedzieć się z analizowanego tutaj zbioru danych.
This is an empirical quantitative analysis of the official data coming from the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The foreign scholars in contemporary Poland are presented in the context of global “brain circulation” or migration of highly qualified specialist. In this paper we discuss characteristics of the analyzed data base: universities and colleges where they are usually employed; academic disciplines they represent; relations between the number of foreign scholars and the prestige of institutions employing them. We conclude by pointing towards what we can and cannot learn from the data set analyzed here.

The article presents the academic achievements of Mieczysław Buczyński, Ph.D. (1936-1992) with special emphasis placed on his dialectological and onomastic research in the Lublin area. The scholar created a card index for the Dictionary of the Huszcza in Podlasie dialect which index consists of more than 100 thousand words. The vocabulary can serve as a basis for describing linguistic interference between the local Ukrainian dialects and the insular Polish dialect. Another area of Mieczysław Buczyński’s academic interest was onomastics, especially urban names and anthroponymy. The studies of the names in Lublin were conducted with respect to the object and the methodology. In his descriptions of urban names, Mieczysław Buczyński took into consideration the linguistic as well as the extra-linguistic factors. Anthroponyms of Armenian origin, presented with respect to the inhabitants of Zamość, played an important role in the scholar’s onomastic studies. The article presents the academic achievements of the prematurely deceased scholar and a person born and living in the Lublin area. He was involved in pioneering research and nouvelle methodology, largely supported by the ethnic and cultural diversity of the region with which Mieczysław Buczyński always identified himself.

On the occasion of 100 years of existence and activity of Adam Mickiewicz University in Pozna, one may sum up the contribution of the Faculty of Theology which has existed as part of the uni- versity for 20 years. This contribution has concerned the research and teaching arenas combined with a commitment for the social community of the Wielkopolska province. What is specific of the faculty is its ability to work both on the scientific and didactic levels as well as on the church level, which requires considerable knowledge and time in order to competently combine the requirements of working at university with demands of the Catholic Church managed by the Second Vatican Council. The scientific and popular scientific initiatives in the widely understood biblical studies represent a valuable contribution to the celebration of 100 years of the Pozna university. Like other scientific disciplines, they can proudly make their own contribution to the development of sci- ence in our city, as well as the entire country. One can only hope that the present generation of sci- entists will take the baton passed to them in the relay race of generations, and will make their own contribution to the science thereby honouring Pozna as an important scientific centre in Poland.

Janus Pannonius, the first great poet in Hungary, brought his skills to perfection in Italy. He attended Guarino Veronese’s school in Ferrara and studied law in Padua, where he came into contact with many poets and scholars. The paper deals with the references to those contacts in Janus’ epigrams. Many a time Pannonius not only sneers at second-rate poets and inefficient scholars, but also ruthlessly ridicules their mental impotence and apparent erudition. On the other hand, he willingly praises people, whose output is really splendid and composed in accordance with the requirements of contemporary poetics. Janus’ scoffs are first of all addressed to his schoolmates. Being a poet aware of his own talent, Pannonius tends to point out the erroneous understanding of Renaissance theories, the misuse of the principle of imitatio antiquorum and the lack of self-invention in adopting other – both classic and modern – authors’ motifs. Neither does he approve of innovatory style of writing and considers that as an offence against pure Latinitas. Despite his severe criticism, he also manages to appreciate true talent, praise poetical skills or admire someone’s versatility. With unaffected pleasure and approval he is singing the praises of Guarino Veronese, his master from Ferrara. Janus highlights Guarino’s knowledge, eloquence, didactic powers and great command of Latin and Greek. In his epigrams Pannonius shows oneself as a careful observer precisely describing features of persons from his own circle, many times showing them, if that is the word, in a distorting mirror, what does not, perhaps, creates complete picture of Renaissance humanists, but surely makes it more witty and florid.
