Ekonomia i etyka. Inspiracje konfucjańskie [Economics and ethics. Confucian inspirations] edited by W. Banach, M.A. Michalski, J. Sójka, „Człowiek i Społeczeństwo” vol. XLVI: Między Chinami a Zachodem. Pytanie o źródła chińskiego sukcesu gospodarczego [Between China and the West. An inquiry into the sources of the Chinese economic miracle], Poznań 2018, pp. 43–66, Adam Mickiewicz University. Faculty of Social Sciences Press. ISSN 0239-3271.The aim of this article is to assess what kind of possible inspirations for economic thinking one can expect from Confucianism. A direct challenge was issued by the work of Kazimierz Poznański who claims that Confucianism is a source of a new paradigm for economics, the one based on ethics. So the question posed in this paper is, to what extent Confucian economics, as presented by Poznański, can become an alternative view counterposed to the western liberal economics, allegedly devoid of ethical contents. To answer that question one should first analyse the relation between economics and ethics within traditional, western, liberal approach. The author of this article posits that ethical component is present within this approach and, at the same time, Confucian values are not that different as far as the goals of economic life are concerned. What is more, one can find some conceptual affinities between Confucius and Adam Smith.

Opis:
Business ethics deals with ethical aspects of management and entrepreneurship, activities closely linked to “this world’s” problems. Surprisingly enough religious traditions have their impact on the argumentation in this field. The paper focuses on two biblical parables: on the talents and on the good Samaritan. Both are not only present in business and management literature but also widely discussed in the context of today’s economy and society. The first one seems to be a basis of the doctrine of corporate social responsibility in its original form presented within the “gospel of wealth” movement. The second one however offers even more opportunities to discuss the responsibilities of business in today’s world. So the religious narratives cannot be ignored within business ethics. This conclusion applies, of course, to all religions, esp. the Asian ones in view of the fact of the rapid development of Chinese or Indian economies.

The aim of this article is to explore the way the notion of culture has been presented in management theories. In some instances, the concept was absent; but a closer inspection can reveal that culture was an issue or a challenge for managers – as it was the case with taylorism, which actually tried to overcome the cultural differentiation of the workforce. Today, intercultural management and the concept of organizational culture are a crucial part of management theory and education. But the abundance of books and articles on the impact of culture on the economy poses yet another challenge for the students of culture. Is this phenomenon understood correctly, and does intercultural management do justice to the nature of culture and intercultural relations? Perhaps the focus on culture has been blown out of proportion, and perhaps it is meant to hide a purely technocratic attitude toward the workforce? Nevertheless, it would be hard to understand globalization without taking into account the transcultural phenomen of today’s management.

Opis:
Is Edith Stein a symbol of reconciliation between Jews and Catholics or just the opposite – a major stumbling block? This question was asked by Susanne Batzdorff, Edith Stein’s niece, in her memories. It should be repeated today if we try to approach seriously the theme of Catholic-Jewish dialogue. For many Catholics, it is not easy to understand the Jewish point of view regarding the canonization of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Therefore the aim of this article was to present this perspective and its justification, the understanding of which seems to be a precondition of a real dialogue, the dialogue where both sides are given the same right to express their thoughts, claims and reservations. The relatives of Edith Stein and Jewish commentators on her life and death underline that they have lost Edith Stein twice: first, when she made her conversion to Catholicism and, second, after her death, when she became a symbol of Christian martyrdom, the fact which finally led to her canonisation in 1998. In their eyes, Edith Stein had nfaced discrimination during her professional career and died in the gas chamber as a Jew. She was refused tenure at German universities as a Jew and as a woman. Obviously, as a Catholic nun, Edith Stein herself had the right to read these facts as an evidence of apre-existing God’s plan: all her personal failures were meant to lead to a final and essentialvictory made possible by her conversion. But the Jewish perspective, for obviousreasons, is different: the Jewish community lost one of its members in a period when integration seemed natural in the face of the Nazi threat. The second loss of Edith Steinwas a symbolic one: canonisation made her one of Catholic saints – despite the fact thatshe died as a Jew along with millions of other victims of the Shoah. Was her death a partof God’s project to convoke her to sanctity? Should we understand that the Holocaustwas also part of the same plan. The second loss, in fact, is connected with the symbolic appropriation of theHolocaust by the Catholic Church by underlying the Christian martyrdom evidenced bythe death of Edith Stein. In view of the fact that she died together with six millions otherJews, the question arises why her martyrdom led only her to sanctity and not any otherJews? Was her conversion a reason why she was such rewarded? For Jews, it is bothtragic and paradoxical that Edith Stein converted to Catholicism which for centuries hasblamed Jews for killing Jesus Christ and has instigated anti-Semitism. The latter finallyled to Hitler’s plan of the final solution. Even today, among Catholics, a claim can be heard that conversion to Christianity is a logical step, natural consequence, and kind ofcompensation once a Jew admits that it was a historical mistake not to recognise Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Therefore it would be natural to honour Edith Stein for her decision to convert. In conclusion, the author of the article states once more that without understanding the Jewish perspective on life and death of Edith Stein neither a dialogue or reconciliation is possible between Jews and Catholics.

The basic question posed in this article refers to the problem of relevance of pre-modern moral categories to today’s ethical argumentation concerning business and finance. Since the financial crisis of 2007–2009 a revival of interest in the notion of greed has been noticeable. After the fall of Lehman Brothers in 2008, greed as an excessive desire for wealth became the popular catchword. However the question arises is it really possible that financial crisis resulted because of egoistic pursuit of self-interest and not because of regulatory neglect or others systemic failures? To answer this question the notion of greed is analyzed in its historical religious context of the evolution of Christian dogma in the Middle Ages. Greed as a cardinal sin was part of cultural construction of morality and something fundamental to the social order. Today however the use of this notion can do more harm than good. Instead of turning our attention to structural issues of the market it offers an explanation in terms of personal desires and idiosyncrasies. This type can easily trigger the scapegoating mechanism which soon can restore to life old prejudices and stereotypes.

The goal of this article is to argue in favor of such a type of ethical reflection which comes to terms with the unavoidable existence of competition and self-interest as a basic human motivation, which does justice to the market rules of the game, but, at the same time, does not allow itself to embrace the extremities of neoliberal ideology which a priori rejects any state intervention in the markets. Competition in a modern economy which resembles a positive-sum game, can be recognized as constructive element of the market leading to prosperity and economic development. Morality then cannot be construed as rules which favor only restraint, altruism and compassion but rather as a social regulator which creates conditions of fair competition, fair rules of the game. This kind of economic ethics has been elaborated by the followers of the so-called ordoliberalism of Walter Eucken. The ethics of order (Ordnungsethik) or institutional ethics has been focused on the legal and moral order created and safeguarded by a state. The article develops the idea of non-contradictory status of self-interest and common good within the modern economy as a basis for business ethics.

For many people the expression “applied ethics” sounds like a pleonasm. They tend to claim that ethics by its very nature is about practical matters. It deals with human actions and their motivations and there is no need to create an additional discipline with special practical bias. However, at least since the 1970s, there has been a growing movement of applied ethics which resulted not only in the increase of enrolment to the academic courses but also in the demand for consulting services in this field. And yet the question still remains to what extent applied ethics inherits philosophical tradition and style of thinking. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the applied ethics is a continuation of philosophical inquiry in the way adjusted well to the demands of the pluralistic and democratic societies.

Traditionally Catholicism has been perceived as unfriendly to the capitalist economy. Protestantism’s image is different: it has been regarded as a religious movement which boosted the so-called spirit of capitalism. The aim of this article is to raise a question whether today’s Catholicism still deserves that characterization as a denomination biased against capitalism. This issue is of considerable importance for business ethicists who are interested in the moral condition of market economy and, quite often, in the impact of religion on economic culture. Many of them are Catholics themselves and their religion seems to be a real source of inspiration for the ethical analyses of economic life they present. This article offers a number of arguments to the effect that although Catholic social teaching originated in the pre-modern, medieval period, it has changed to a large degree due to several papal encyclicals in the 20th century. Centesimus annus by John Paul II should be mentioned here as an epochal message expressing approval of human creativity and entrepreneurship. This new perspective was also due to Catholic philosophers and theologians such as Michael Novak and other members of the neoconservative movement in the United States.

The well-known cases of religiously motivated refusal to serve customers deserve a thorough analysis as they pose a serious challenge to liberal-democratic values, the rule of law, and freedom in economic affairs. Are they examples of legitimate expression of religious conscience or just acts of discrimination which are forbidden by law? If the latter, how swift should be a reaction of the state by applying sanctions provided by anti-discrimination laws? How the state through its laws should shape the relationship between religion and commerce? To answer these questions the Enlightenment concept of doux commerce will be debated since this idea entails an assumption that markets promote interactions among strangers and thus can facilitate peaceful cooperation in a pluralistic society. In particular, large part of this article will be dedicated to the recent analyses of this concept advanced by Nathan B. Oman. He underlined the moral significance of markets which train people to interact on the basis of personal detachment and art of putting unsolvable issues aside.

The crisis of 2007–2009 signalled a failure of business ethics which tried to preach morality to managers and after several economic downfalls in the past, e.g. Enron’s bankruptcy, constantly repeated “this should never ever happen again”. But after the recent global meltdown it would be difficult to believe that similar crises definitely will never happen in the future. So we need a business ethics more cognizant of economic realities and more realistic in its approach to problems of individual motivations and in its perception of diverse circumstances, e.g. political or cultural, which can have an impact on manager’s conduct. In this respect two sources of inspiration may seem promising: the economic sociology which emphasises the impact of culture and politics on the “architecture” of markets and the German institutional ethics (Ordnungsethik) which is focused on the rules of the game and not on behaviour of particular economic actors.

Greed as an excessive desire for wealth returned as a popular catchword after the fall of Lehman Brothers in 2008. Because it was only the beginning of the global financial crisis, the notion of greed has been present in public discourse since that time. A legitimate question arises to what extent it could have really contributed to economic instability. But equally important are the questions of semantics. Of course, the notion of greed has its ancient roots and has been always present in religious writings and philosophical works, but today’s use of this notion requires an analysis. What do we mean when we say “greed”? What do we want to achieve (pragmatic aspect), and what are the motives of those writers who include greed into their diagnoses of economic downturns? The major claim of this article is that greed as an individual desire cannot be a proper explanation of the crisis. More important factors are the political and social mechanisms, esp. the role of the regulators of the mortgage industry in the US. Sociological analysis of that industry, which triggered thewhole crisis, shows that the crisis was not an example of the excess of the free market and deregulation but rather something created by the politicians. Paradoxically an analysis of the systemic social and political factors which had led to the crisis allow us to reflect on greed as a notion which is a part of the so-called culture of excess – characterized, among others, by the process of the “democratization of desires”.

The purpose of this article is to explore the religious roots of modern ethical reflection on the economy. The starting point is the well-known debate between Weber and Tawney regarding the Protestant work ethic and the rise of capitalism. According to the author, it is necessary to trace the subsequent development of this ethic, particularly in the United States, as it was a final destination for Protestant migrants who embodied the spirit of capitalism. This ultimately resulted in a different form of this spirit than what was initially proposed by Max Weber and Richard Tawney, due to the transformation of American Reformed Protestantism. The Gospel of Wealth and the Social Gospel not only revealed a different side of American capitalism at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also remain relevant in present-day discussions on the ethical aspects of the economy and business administration.

Tekst ten zamykają uwagi końcowe i próba oceny propozycji Karla Homanna.
This article is dedicated to the idea of order ethics (Ordnungsethik) by Karl Homann, called also an institutional ethics, which has been developed within the German ordoliberal tradition and has become a separate strand within this movement. It offers an approach to economic life which avoids the traps of terminological misunderstandings (such as identifying morality with altruism and self-interest with egoism) and of an ahistorical approach to the nature of contemporary economy which could lead to the belief that morality and market competition cannot be reconciled. The article is composed of four parts. Th e first deals with the title problem of reconciliation while the second presents an understanding of a market in terms of a framing order in accordance with the original, ordoliberal proposal of Walter Eucken. Other parts are focused on the work of Karl Homann. The third part presents a theoretical, paradigmatic approach to a relation of competition and morality within a market, and the fourth one deals with the problem of a departure from the theoretical perspective caused by the need for pragmatic solutions to given problems. In conclusion an evaluation of Homann’s proposals will be given.
