    Purpose of his article is to present to the reader the phenomenon of submitting somebody else’s MA thesis as one’s own. Based on author’s studies (experiment, in-depth interviews and content analysis) the most important characteristics of this “business” are described: terms of transactions, buyers and sellers characteristics, prices, seasonal, types of thesis and so on. In the second part of this article is presented the interpretation of the phenomenon contexted to Robert Merton’s functional theory. The theory helps to present selling and buying thesis as an innovative strategy in educational system, but at the same time dysfunctional. Not only a microsociological point of view is presented but also a broader context is described: anomy phenomena in Polish society.

Social structure is a collection of many dependencies, variable intermingled with also a impact influence on each other depending on the type, size and weight of the influence. From its volatilities and variables, social dysfunctions are born.

    Artykuł ten dotyczy etyki pracy w zawodzie nauczyciela akademickiego. Swoje rozważania prowadzę w oparciu o dwie główne teorie: protestanckiej etyki pracy Maxa Webera oraz jej adaptacji do środowiska akademickiego Roberta Mertona. Omawiam je w polskim kontekście kształtowania się etosu akademickiego, przywołując prace Dietricha Bonhoeff era oraz wartości fundamentalne dla protestanckiego etosu pracy czyli uczciwości, rzetelności i pracowitości w ich religij nym oraz pozareligij nym wymiarze. Na tym tle podejmę próbę przeglądu obszarów zagrożeń i wypaczeń w szeregach polskiej kadry akademickiej wskazując kategorię odpowiedzialności jako kluczową w budowaniu etosu akademickiego.
    In this article I focus on professional work ethics for academic teachers. My considerations are based on the analysis of two main theories: the Protestant work ethics, by Max Weber, and its adaptation to the academic environment, by Robert Merton. I evaluate how these theories can contribute to shaping the academic ethos in the Polish context, drawing upon Dietrich Bonhoeff er’s works and the fundamental values of the Protestant work ethos - honesty, reliability and diligence - presenting their religious and secular aspects. Against the above background I attempt a review of ethical risks and violations among Polish academics, pointing to the category of responsibility as crucial in the process of building an academic ethos.

    Academic ethics has recently become an important issue in Poland. With changes in the Polish law on higher education a new approach to ethics of students and academics has been presented. As a PhD student and young researcher, I am personally interested in the introduced changes. This article seeks to examine professional academic ethics in terms of two chosen theories, that is, the Protestant work ethic of Max Weber and its adaptation to the academic environment by Robert K. Merton. I situate both theories in the  Polish context of shaping the academic ethos. In my deliberations I recall Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s works as fundamental for the Protestant work ethos values, which are honesty, reliability and diligence. Additionally I present their religious as well as non religious aspects. With such theoretical foundations, I attempt to evaluate the risks and violations in the ranks of Polish academics. The theoretical basis and the collected data enable me to put forward the claim that it is not feasible in Poland to follow the Western model of work ethics. Instead, it has to be built from scratch. To start this process, we need to consider the value of responsibility as a crucial category not only for the process of academic ethos formation, but also for everyday life from the early years.

    Opis:
    The increased demand for refugee admissions and resettlement in developed countries makes it important for host countries to understand the refugee integration process. Yet, the literature on processes and pathways driving and facilitating integration is under-theorised, poorly understood, and in need of systematic research. This paper contributes to advancing our understanding of integration processes and the interaction between individual actions, social connections, and structural pathways by using the analytical framework of Merton’s (1968) theory on goals and means. Australia has been involved in the UNHCR resettlement program since 1977 and is one of the top three resettlement countries in the world. Despite considerable experience and policy and program efforts, humanitarian migrants experience lower economic and social integration than other immigrants, even after controlling for a range of factors such as human capital or pre-migration experiences. Drawing on data from an ethnographic study with recently settled South Sudanese refugees, and a longitudinal survey of humanitarian migrants in Australia, I demonstrate that the main reason for this poor outcome is a lack of accessible pathways to refugee migrants. I conclude by discussing the merits of host countries focusing their settlement policies on the processes of integration to ensure that resettled refugees have accessible pathways to turn their personal resources into economic and social participation.

    In the article, on the grounds of a perfect type of bureaucracy by Max Weber, is represented description of the bureaucratic organization and list of features connected with military organization in peacetime. In the following sections, dysfunctions of bureaucratic organization based on Robert Merton’s view, were presented and compared with military organization realising assignments outside the country.     Celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba udzielenia odpowiedzi na pytanie, jaką rolę może obecnie pełnić Mertonowska koncepcja etosu uczonych, a szczególnie jego norma „komunizmu” w opisie i wyjaśnianiu mechanizmów funkcjonowania współczesnej nauki. Merton przedstawia normy etosu uczonych jako reguły etyczne oraz technologiczne, czyli rzeczywiście regulujące praktykę badawczą. Szczególnie istotną rolę odgrywa norma ”komunizmu”, nakazującą uczonym dzielenie się wynikami swojej pracy badawczej z innymi członkami środowiska oraz ze społeczeństwem. W artykule zostały zaprezentowane alternatywne wobec Mertonowskiej wizje funkcjonowania społeczności uczonych: koncepcja pola naukowego autorstwa Pierra Bourdieu oraz konwersji kapitału w ramach „cyklu wiarygodności” zaproponowane przez Brunona Latoura i Steve’a Woolgara. W żadnej z tych wizji reguła „komunizmu” nie organizuje praktyki badawczej. Istotne dla precyzyjnego opisu reguł działania w nauce jest uwzględnienie roli zmiennych historycznie modeli uprawiania nauki (model amatorski, akademicki, zawodowy, post-akademicki). Przestrzeganie normy komunizmu jest możliwe jedynie w modelu akademickim, podczas gdy współcześni badacze w coraz większym stopniu uprawiają naukę albo w ramach korporacji (model zawodowy), albo pozostając w Akademii i korzystając z funduszy prywatnych (model post-akademicki) – w takiej sytuacji przestrzeganie normy komunizmu, nawet traktowanej jako reguła moralna, nie jest możliwe.
    The article attempts to establish the role that may be presently played by Merton’s concept of scientific ethos, and especially his norm of “communism” in describing and explaining the mechanisms of modern science’s functioning. Merton introduces scientific ethos’ norms as ethical and technological, and therefore truly regulating the practice of research. In this context especially important is the role played by the norm of “communism,” which orders to share research results with all research community and society. This article presents two visions of research community’s functioning alternative to Merton’s concetion: Pierre Bourdieu’s conception of” le champ scientifique,” and Bruno Latour’s and Steve Woolgar’s conceptions of conversion of capital within the “cycle of credibility.” None of these concepts feature research practice as organised by “communism.” The consideration of roles of historically evolving models of practicing science (amateur, academic, professional, post-academic) is crucial for a precise description of the rules of functioning in science. Abiding by the rule of communism is possible only in the academic model, whereas modern researchers increasingly often function either within corporations (professional model), or remain in the academia while operating on private funds (post-academic model). Following the rule of communism, even as a moral guideline, is not possible in these circumstances.
