This paper synthesizes cross-sectional studies of the effect of proficiency on second language (L2) pragmatics to answer the synthesis question: Does proficiency affect adult learners’ pragmatic competence? Findings have revealed an overall positive proficiency effect on pragmatic competence, and in most cases higher proficiency learners have higher pragmatic competence. However, increased proficiency does not guarantee a native-like pragmatic performance because proficiency effect varies depending on the nature of target pragmatic features such as types of speech acts (degrees of directness and conventionality) (e.g., Cook & Liddicoat, 2002; Félix-Brasdefer, 2007), modalities of pragmatic performance (comprehension and production) (e.g., Bradovi-Harlig, 2008, 2009), social variables involved in task situations, such as social status (e.g., Allami & Naeimi, 2011), social distance (e.g., Maeshiba, Yoshinaga, Kasper, & Ross, 1996), and power relationship (e.g., Al-Gahtani & Roever, 2012). Moreover, proficiency effect is mediated by contextual variables such as length of stay in the target language community (e.g., Shardakova, 2005; Taguchi, 2011, 2013; Xu, Case, & Wang, 2009).

This study investigates the relationship between musical ability and pronunciation proficiency of English as a foreign language [EFL] of university students of English philology. English pronunciation of the participants is evaluated by academic teachers of English in three categories: the general impression of the foreign or native accent, the accuracy of production of English sounds and the use of word stress and intonation. This experiment was conducted entirely online. Participants’ musical ability was tested using Gordon’s Advanced Measure of Music Audiation [AMMA]. The results of this study demonstrate a moderately positive correlation between musicality and FL pronunciation proficiency. The more musical students, the higher marks from the judges. The present findings seem to be consistent with other studies which suggest that musical skills may positively affect the acquisition of foreign language pronunciation.

The present study explores the relationship between controlled productive knowledge of collocations and L2 proficiency, the role of frequency in controlled productive knowledge of collocations, and the quantifiability of controlled productive collocational knowledge growth alongside L2 proficiency and word frequency levels. A proficiency measure and a productive collocation test modelled on Laufer and Nation (1999) were presented to Belgian and Burundian English majors. The results show that scores on both tests distinguish between proficiency levels and, furthermore, highly correlate. This suggests that controlled productive knowledge of collocations develops as proficiency increases, supporting earlier studies (Boers, Eyckmans, Kappel, Stengers, & Demecheleer, 2006; Bonk, 2001; Eyckmans, Boers, & Demecheleer, 2004; Gitsaki, 1999) that had established a relationship between collocational knowledge and L2 proficiency. The results also show that the more frequent the collocations, the better they are known, which highlights the crucial role played by frequency in knowing words (Nation & Beglar, 2007). Furthermore, the number of collocations added can be quantified and we observe moderat egains at beginner and advanced levels, and impressive gains at intermediate levels. This supports and extends Laufer’s (1998) and Zhong and Hirsh’s (2009) findings and lays basic ground work for teaching collocations, the amount of which should increase with proficiency levels.

The study intended to determine if self-concept predicts senior high school students’ English oral proficiency level. The correlational research design was used to describe the relationship of the variables. Forty (40) students were randomly chosen as a sample from the population. A self-concept questionnaire and an oral proficiency interview were administered. The data were analysed using frequency count, computation of mean, Pearson product-moment correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and simple linear regression analysis. The findings revealed that the respondents have an above-average self-concept in the social and family dimensions. Further study showed that only the physical, psychological, academic, and family dimensions predict oral proficiency in the English language. On the contrary, it was statistically determined that the social dimension does not predict oral proficiency. With the study’s findings, it can be concluded that speech development programmes must be holistic to cater not only the communicative abilities of the students but also their affective domains. It could help improve the quality of English language education in the country in terms of oral proficiency development.

This study investigates the use of pragmatic markers (PMs) by learners of English at varying proficiency levels. The study analyzes data from a university-level oral proficiency exam that categorized Chinese and Korean English-as-a-second-language (ESL) speakers into four proficiency levels and compares data with those of native speakers taking the same test. Findings indicate that PM use generally rises with proficiency level. The rates of PM use showed a dramatic increase between the highest and second-highest proficiency group. The highest proficiency ESL group used PMs at the same rate as native speakers. The study also found that the variety of different PMs used goes up steadily with proficiency level. These results are discussed in terms of their implications for understanding how second language learners’ use of PMs develops.

This paper presents the results of a quantitative study that explores two factors contributing to reading comprehension of domain specific texts, namely level of language proficiency and background knowledge. Overall, 32 students participated in the study by taking two custom-designed reading comprehension tests. The test scores were further  analyzed using SPSS statistical software. The results of statistical tests revealed the differences between study groups as well as the effects of compensation. More precisely, the most proficient group scored higher on almost all tests and completed the tests more quickly than the remaining groups. The statistical tools used to test the data showed that there are significant differences between all the groups in their performance on Proficiency Level Test and in timing. Hence, our hypothesis concerning the influence of background knowledge and language proficiency on reading comprehension of domain-specific texts has been confirmed. Finally, the paper discusses limitations of the study as well as implications for EFL teaching.

This paper presents the approach of conducting proficiency tests (PT) on the determination of radionuclides in food and environmental samples adopted by the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT), Warsaw, Poland and the results of the provided PTs. The PTs have been organized by the National Atomic Energy Agency (NAEA), Poland, since 2004. The activity of the following radionuclides: 241Am, 137Cs, 3H, 239Pu, 226Ra and 90Sr were determined. The test materials: water, milk powder, wheat flour and soil, were prepared by spiking blank materials with standard solution of the radionuclide of interest. The activity concentrations were calculated and associated uncertainties were evaluated before sending the test materials to the laboratories. The results provided by the participants were statistically evaluated by means of z and zeta scores as well as using the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) criteria for trueness and precision. Observed trends and some benefits for the participants have been presented.

This study set to investigate the critical importance of integrating Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) and WebQuest, STADIBTM for short, on developing the advanced-level argumentative writing skills of L2 English university students. The study employed a pre-post-test comparison of the experimental group (N=54) versus the control group (N=24). The data from the study have been systematically reanalysed to evaluate in detail how the initial learner proficiency levels correlated with improvements in the specific areas covered by the evaluation rubric that guided the collaborative writing activities of experimental group students.

Child peer interaction in English as a foreign language (EFL) settings has recently received increasing attention with respect to age, instruction type and first language (L1) use, but longitudinal studies remain scarce and the effects of proficiency pairing and language choice on meaning negotiation strategies are still rather unexplored. Within a primary school EFL context, this paper aims to explore the amount and types of meaning negotiation, and the effects of time, proficiency pairing and language choice in a spot-the-differences task. Forty Catalan/Spanish bilingual children were paired into mixed and matched proficiency dyads, and their oral production was analyzed twice over the course of two years (i.e., 9-10 and 11-12 years old). The analysis included conversational adjustments, self- and other-repetition and positive and negative feedback in the learners’ L1 and second language (L2). Our data show that the amount of meaning negotiation is low, although L2 meaning negotiation is higher than L1 meaning negotiation, and all the strategies are present in the data except for comprehension checks. Time effects are hardly observed. However, proficiency pairing and language effects are more generally found, whereby mixed proficiency dyads tend to negotiate for meaning more than matched dyads and meaning negotiation instances are more frequent in the L2 than in the L1.

The article deals with the development of students’ information proficiency in the Polish Republic and Ukraine. The article is devoted to the implications brought into the process of teachers training by the impact of key competencies and information technologies. Special attention is paid to information proficiency and future teachers’ skills that are the most important for their training and perspective career. Monitoring of future teachers’ information proficiency forming at Polish establishments of higher education has been carried out which resulted in developing methodology recommendations for raising the level of the students’ information pro ciency at Ukrainian pedagogical higher educational establishments. Level of scienti fic development of the issue of future teachers’ information pro ciency forming has been described. Competence approach to training teachers for information society has been paid attention to. Peculiarities and structure of future teachers’ information pro ciency have been characterized. Standards and criteria of Polish teachers have been systematized, contents of future teachers’ information proficiency forming at Polish establishments of higher education have been analysed; projects and programmes as means for future teachers’ information proficiency forming have been characterized.

Analizę przeprowadzono na podstawie dwóch programów badania biegłości autoryzowanych przez klub POLLAB w ramach sekcji BADAŃ MATERIAŁOWYCH oraz programu badań międzylaboratoryjnych organizowanego przez firmę NDTEST. W roku 2019 zostały zainicjowane programy biegłości badań nieniszczących takiej samej próbki złącza spawanego: • radiograficzną techniką błonową - PT 11/19-20 – RTF [1]; • ultradźwiękową techniką ręczną - PT 12/19-20 – UTman. [2]; • ultradźwiękową techniką phased-array - ILC 2/19-20 – UT-PA [3]. Programy zrealizowano z udziałem ponad 30 laboratoriów w okresie około 2 lat ze względu na znane ograniczenia obiektywne. Analiza, przeprowadzona na podstawie sprawozdań końcowych dla każdego z programów, dotyczyła wybranych wskazań nieakceptowanych, scharakteryzowanych przez istotne parametry ich lokalizacji i rozmiarów. Badania biegłości pozwoliły ocenić „odległość” od wartości referencyjnych dla wyników uzyskiwanych różnymi metodami/technikami badawczymi przez poszczególne laboratoria, przywoływane tu w formie losowo przydzielonych kodów. Ocena opierała się na opracowaniach statystycznych, dobrze ugruntowanych w tego typu badaniach biegłości. Niezależnie porównano również niektóre parametry wad, określane niezależnie dwoma objętościowymi metodami badań nieniszczących. Wnioski trzech programów biegłości w obszarze badań nieniszczących stanowią bardzo istotny wkład w rozwój laboratoriów badawczych, w kontekście wiarygodności uzyskiwanych wyników badania.
The analysis has been carried out on the base of two proficiency tests authorized by society club POLLAB within the frame of Materials Testing section and the interlaboratory comparison program authorized by NDTEST company. At the end of 2019 there have been initiated two proficiency programs in the non-destructive testing area on the same welded joint sample using: • radiographic analogous film technique - PT 11/19-20 – RTF [1]; • ultrasonic manual technique - PT 12/19-20 – UTman. [2]; • ultrasonic phased-array technique - ILC 2/19-20 – UT-PA [3]. The programs have been performed by about 30 laboratories in the period of about 2 years on account of known objective limitations. The analysis has been done on the base of final reports for each test and was focussed on the chosen unaccepted indications, characterized by essential parameters of its localization and size. The proficiency tests allow to evaluate the” distance” to reference values for results parameters achieved by each laboratory, coded here by secret randomly designated numbers. The assessment is based on statistical treatments, very good established in proficiency evaluation. Some parameters of imperfections have been compared as a two independently values determined by applied volumetric testing techniques. The conclusions from these proficiency tests in the non-destructive area provided the real contribution in the testing laboratory development in view of reliability of testing results.

W publikacji przedstawiono zasady organizowania i realizowania badań biegłości (proficiency testing – PT) w laboratoriach badania środowiska pracy oraz oceny i wykorzystania uzyskanych wyników z uwzględnieniem podstawowych wymagań zawartych w normach PN-EN ISO/IEC 17043 i ISO 13528. Podstawą prawidłowego funkcjonowania laboratorium badań środowiska pracy oraz gwarancją kompetencji i utrzymywania wysokiego poziomu jakości pomiarów czynników szkodliwych jest wdrożenie i stosowanie skutecznego systemu organizacji, zarządzania i prowadzenia badań, np. według wytycznych opisanych w normie PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025. Potwierdzeniem kompetencji laboratorium do wykonywania określonych badań jest akredytacja. Istotnym narzędziem pomocnym w utrzymaniu kompetencji laboratorium – wykorzystywanym przez jednostkę akredytującą również w procesach akredytacji i nadzoru – jest udział w odpowiednim programie badania biegłości. W pracy omówiono również metody statystyczne niezbędne do oceny prawidłowego przygotowania obiektów do badania biegłości oraz wykorzystywanie tych metod do interpretacji wyników uzyskiwanych przez uczestników programu PT i oceny jakości wykonywanych przez nich badań. This publication presents the principles of organization, implementation, assessment and exploitation of proficiency testing results in the work environmental laboratory based on basic requirements included in standard PN-EN ISO/IEC 17043 and ISO 13528. The basis for the proper functioning of the laboratory is to use and observe the basic requirements for the competence to carry out the tests and the guidelines on ensuring reliable and accurate results, specified e.g., according to the guidelines described in the standard PN-EN ISO/IEC 17043. The confirmation of the laboratory competence is the obtained accreditation. To obtain this certificate several conditions, including proficiency testing (PT) should be met. The main aspects of this paper is to show the role of proficiency testing in the process of assuring a properly functioning quality system in the laboratory. The accreditation requirements, the types of proficiency testing schemes, methods of statistical analysis and interpretation of results are also discussed by the authors. Med Pr 2016;67(2):267–283

This study investigates teachers’ first language (L1, German) and second language (L2, English) use in the primary English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom in two federal German states. It particularly focuses on the question of whether a more frequent, (self-reported) use of the L2 is positively correlated to teachers’ professional qualification as well as (self-assessed) L2 proficiency. To this end, data was collected in 2017 through an online survey among German primary teachers teaching EFL in year 4 (N = 844). L2 use was assessed through a 4-point Likert scale comprising 16 items on various classroom situations. L1 use was surveyed with an open question on situations of L1 use in the L2 classroom. Moreover, teachers self-assessed their L2 proficiency with a 4-point Likert scale and adapted CEFR descriptors for speaking. Findings indicate that teachers claim to use the L2 more in L2-related situations and the L1 more in classroom management situations. The study shows that teachers with a higher formal qualification tend to assess their L2 proficiency higher and claim to use the L2 more often in the primary EFL classroom. In contrast, teachers with a lower formal qualification tend to assess their L2 proficiency lower and claim to use the L1 more frequently in the L2 classroom.

Affective and situational correlates of foreign language proficiency: A study of Chinese university learners of English and Japanese

The study explores the effects of teacher support and student cohesiveness on foreign language (FL) learning outcomes and compares their effect with that of FL anxiety. One hundred and forty-six first-year Chinese undergraduates of Japanese, who were also learning English, participated in two surveys that were administered over a 2-month interval. Data were collected using the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986), the Teacher Support Scale (Trickett & Moos, 2002), the Affiliation Scale (Trickett & Moos, 2002), the English Proficiency Scale, and the Japanese Proficiency Scale. It was found that (a) student cohesiveness was a positive predictor of FL proficiency, (b) teacher support, which was positively related to student cohesiveness and negatively to FL anxiety, did not show a direct relationship with FL proficiency, and (c) FL anxiety, which was negatively associated with FL proficiency, showed a better predictive power than student cohesiveness and teacher support.

Adopting a longitudinal design, this study investigates the effects of foreign language anxiety on foreign language proficiency over time within English and Japanese learning contexts. It also explores the stability of anxiety in English and Japanese over time and the stability of anxiety across English and Japanese. Chinese university students (N=146), who were simultaneously learning Japanese and English, participated in this study. Data were collected twice over a 2-month interval, using the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale, the English Proficiency Scale, and the Japanese Proficiency Scale. Results showed that anxiety changes had a significantly negative, but weak, correlation with the development of overall proficiency and the proficiency in sub- skills such as reading or speaking, for both English and Japanese, suggesting the interference of anxiety with proficiency levels. Anxiety in Japanese tended to decrease significantly over time, but no significant change was found for English. Furthermore, no significant difference between anxiety in Japanese and English was found at either testing time.

This article describes the use of two definitive methods for the determination of Se and As traces in biological materials intended for proficiency testing. Radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA) definitive methods are based on reactor neutron activation with a very selective and quantitative post-irradiation separation of the indicator radionuclide by column chromatography, followed by γ-ray spectrometric measurement. Each of these methods has detection limit of the order of ng·g–1 or better, and yields accurate results. The expanded standard uncertainty for both methods is ca. 4%. Definitive RNAA methods were used for establishing assigned values for Se and As in materials employed in proficiency testing of “Plants” series.

This study empirically compares two often-utilized motivation theories in L2 studies: self-determination theory and the L2 motivational self system. It also examines the relationships among their motivational constructs, learners’ intended L2 learning effort, and L2 proficiency. While a number of studies have utilized these models in order to examine second language learners’ motivation, there has not been a thorough comparison of the two. Furthermore, while many studies have demonstrated the structural relationships between the motivational constructs of the two theories and the learner’s self-reported amount of effort, fewer studies have examined their L2 achievement. The results of this study indicated that the constituents in the two theories are correlated as predicted. Furthermore, while internalized types of motivation in self-determination theory predicted intended learning effort, which then led to L2 proficiency, the strength of the ideal L2 self was much weaker than the L2 learning experience, unlike what is argued in the theory.

In this article two systems of understanding of good are presented: first, the philosophical one (connected with ethical system), and second – religious one (espe cially in case of Christianity, but also other monotheistic religions). It is possible, of course, to imagine a “mixed” system or one where those two could meet each other in specific point, or concept, or representation. In general, those systems have to be considered separately. Rational explanation is crucial for a philosophical system (achieving a specific good makes a reinterpretation of ethical situation from different point of view, for example as a sacrifice, impossible), while religious system needs a personal explanation (ethical situation could have a far-reaching consequences for interpersonal relations, because a supernatural factor, for example a grace, is included here).

Previous research has suggested that high levels of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA) have a negative effect on foreign language learning (Horwitz, 2001; Lu & Liu, 2011) while moderate levels of Second Language Tolerance of Ambiguity (SLTA) are believed to boost foreign language learning (Ely, 1995). There is prima facie evidence that both dimensions are inversely related as Foreign Language Learning contexts are full of ambiguities which may contribute to anxiety. However, the relationship between FLCA and SLTA has been under-researched. The present study is an attempt to fill this gap by investigating the link between SLTA and FLCA in English of 73 secondary school students in Hong Kong. They filled out an online questionnaire consisting of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986) and the Second Language Tolerance of Ambiguity Scale (Ely, 1995). Statistical analyses revealed that FLCA, SLTA and Self-rated English proficiency predict half of the variance in each other; in other words, students who were more tolerant of second language ambiguity were less anxious in their EFL classes and they also felt more proficient.

Interest and self-efficacy beliefs are important components of motivational constructs that share some common characteristics and influence learning. Studies examining how these two relate to each other, however, appear to be few, especially in the area of language learning. To fill this gap, this study aims to investigate how interest in learning English and proficiency influence self-efficacy in listening, using a pre/post-design. This study focused on exploring the role of interest on the development of self-efficacy in 107 EFL Korean university students, with a low-intermediate English proficiency. Despite the participants' proficiency, they were found to possess and maintain relatively high interest over the English course they were enrolled in. Regression analyses revealed that, unlike at the beginning of the course, individual interest was found to be a significant factor in the development of advanced skill self-efficacy around the end of the semester, even predicting it more than proficiency did.

Despite major advances in research on language learning strategies, there are still areas that have received only scant attention, and one of them is undoubtedly learning grammar. The paper contributes to the paucity of empirical investigations in this domain by presenting the findings of a study which sought to investigate the relationship between the use of grammar learning strategies (GLS) reported by 142 English Department students and target language attainment, operationalized as their performance in a practical grammar course and the end-of-the-year examination. Information about GLS use was obtained by means of a tool that was designed on the basis of a theoretical scheme proposed by Oxford, Rang Lee and Park (2007) in which GLS are divided into three categories depending on whether they represent implicit learning with focus on form, explicit inductive learning and explicit deductive learning. The analysis failed to find a strong positive relationship between the use of GLS and achievement, irrespective of the level of the BA program, or statistically significant differences in this respect between lower-level and higher-level participants. The highest, albeit very weak, correlation was identified between the use of GLS associated with explicit deductive learning and grammar course grades, which testifies to the traditional nature of instruction the subjects receive. The findings serve as a basis for putting forward a handful of recommendations for learning, teaching and testing grammar as well as directions for future studies into grammar learning strategies.

This study examines the use of cohesive devices (pragmatic markers and conjunctions) in a 24,000-word corpus of transcribed oral data from 47 learners and native speakers of English. Both of these cohesive devices increase with proficiency level, but not in the same way. Conjunction use seems to increase steadily, and only the differences between the highest and lowest proficiency levels were found to be statistically significant. Pragmatic marker use, however, remains fairly stable across the three lowest proficiency levels and rises drastically for the two highest proficiency levels, and the two higher proficiency levels are significantly different from the two lower levels in their use of pragmatic markers. The results are compared to native speaker rates of cohesive device use for the same tasks and under the same conditions.

Tematem artykułu jest porównanie i ocena wyników badań uzyskanych przez laboratoria chemiczne krajowych urzędów probierczych, uczestniczących w dwóch edycjach (2020 oraz 2021) międzynarodowego programu badań biegłości Round Robin, w zakresie badania zawartości metali szlachetnych w stopach jubilerskich. Przeprowadzone badania biegłości obejmowały analizę próbek testowych techniką spektrometrii fluorescencji rentgenowskiej oraz metodami chemicznymi, w oparciu o które krajowe urzędy probiercze ustalają próby stopów jubilerskich i podejmują decyzje o umieszczaniu cech probierczych na wyrobach z metali szlachetnych. Stopy złota, srebra oraz platyny zostały zbadane przez laboratoria chemiczne okręgowych urzędów probierczych w Krakowie i w Warszawie oraz ich wydziałów zamiejscowych.
The main topic of this article is comparison and evaluation of test results obtained by chemical laboratories of national assay offices participating in in two editions (2020 and 2021) of Round Robin proficiency testing program on testing of precious metals concentrations in jewelry alloys. The conducted proficiency testing covered analyses of test samples using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry technique and chemical methods, used by national assay offices to determine fineness of jewelry alloys and make decisions on hallmarking of precious metal articles. The gold, silver and platinum alloys were tested by chemical laboratories of Regional Assay Offices in Krakow and Warsaw and their Local Branch.

The object of observation is the situation of Polish school in a fast changing world. The author pays attention to often only declaratory changes in ways of teaching, the lack of treatment of the student and the adaptation of teaching methods and materials. There are excessive encyclopaedism, a stress on acquisition of knowledge of descriptive grammar in terms of language education. It notices a necessity to develop pupils’ language skills, because a communication skill may be extremely important in everyday and future adult life. The use of sociolinguistic perspective in Polish language teaching is the way of developing pupils’ communicative competences. Implementation of the students to build and analyse statements taking into account a communication context and also transceiver roles. In the article there have been presented sample lesson solutions, which emphasizes the use of the language in situations close to pupils and avoiding encyclopaedism. It pays attention to the depth of the processed information that serves learning and memory, and also the relationship between teaching methods and the development and functioning of the brain.

Artykuł ma na celu stwierdzenie, czy normatywna odtwarzalność znormalizowanych procedur badawczych, podana w normach czynnościowych badania parametrów jakościowych paliw silnikowych do silników z zapłonem iskrowym, a określona na etapie opracowywania lub nowelizacji norm czynnościowych, jest zgodna z odtwarzalnością rzeczywistą, jaka jest osiągana w praktyce przez szerokie grono użytkowników danej normy. Oceny w praktyce dokonano poprzez analizę wyników badań międzylaboratoryjnych, przeprowadzanych przez liczną grupę uczestników, w których brały udział laboratoria Zakładu Analiz Naftowych INiG – PIB w latach 2010–2016. Z uwagi na dużą liczbę uczestniczących laboratoriów i różny stopień kompetencji, uzyskana przez nie odtwarzalność rzeczywista ma wysoką wartość statystyczną. Część I opisuje problemy, które mogą wystąpić podczas organizacji badania kompetencji laboratoriów.
The article seeks to ascertain whether the normative reproducibility of standardized test procedures, as set out in the functional standards for the quality testing of motor fuels for spark-ignition engines, and defined at the stage of developing or amending functional standards, is consistent with actual reproducibility achieved in practice by a wide circle of users of a given standard. Practical assessment was done by analyzing the results of interlaboratory tests carried out with the participation of a very large group of participants, amongst them the laboratories of the Department of Petroleum Analyses of the Oil and Gas Institute – National Research Institute in 2010–2016. Due to the large number of participating laboratories and the varying degrees of proficiency, the actual reproducibility achieved by them has a high statistical value. Part I describes the problems that may occur during the organization of proficiency testing of laboratories.

To reveal the general profiles of and relationship between Chinese students’ beliefs about English learning and self-efficacy, the present study examined beliefs about English learning and self-efficacy held by Chinese university EFL (English as a FL) learners at differing English proficiency levels. A total of 1,698 students from a top university in Beijing answered a battery of questionnaires. The results revealed a general overview of the students’ beliefs about the nature of language learning and the roles of teachers, feedback and learning strategies, and self-efficacy. Another major finding was that participants at different English proficiency levels differed significantly from one another in beliefs about language learning and self-efficacy.

The paper discusses several methods of evaluating heritage speakers’ abilities in their heritage language. Speech rate in spontaneous text production, lexical knowledge and grammatical proficiency in the heritage language have been found to correlate strongly with one another. Therefore, they are recommended in the literature as quick and reliable diagnostics for establishing the general degree of heritage language maintenance among heritage speakers. Based on data from 20 heritage speakers of Polish in Germany, the current paper shows that lexical and grammatical proficiency are indeed strongly correlated, but speech rate did not turn out to be an indicator for heritage language proficiency in the examined population.

The “love factor” has increasingly figured in SLA research. Thus, Piller (2002) studied the language “glue” between cross-lingual couples; Marinova-Todd (2003) found a link between L2 proficiency and co-habitation with native speakers; Muñoz & Singleton (2007) reported a romantic connection between successful late L2 learners and native speakers; Gonçalves (2013) explored hybridity in bicultural relationships; and Kinsella & Singleton (2014) found that the participants in their study of late L2 learners whose L2 test results were all within native-speaker range had native-speaker life-partners. This issue is now being taken very seriously, as Dewaele & Salomidou’s (2016) recent article on “loving … in a foreign language” demonstrates. In the present article we report on the results of some recent qualitative research, based on interview data collected from five individuals who are involved in intercultural and cross-lingual relationships. The research shows the L2 learning process to be clearly influenced by the affective context in which it occurs. The data also suggest that identity construction may be moved in a particular direction by the language principally adopted by the couple, and that, for the partner for whom this language is an L2, the results can be dramatic in terms of both linguistic and cultural affiliation.

Assessments and testing of young athletes often exclude the fundamental and functional movement capacity, which are critical for healthy motor development of adolescents. The aim of this study was to evaluate functional capacity of young female volleyball players and determine if participation in volleyball leads to development of movement dysfunctions. Two-hundred fifty-eight (258) adolescent female volleyball players (14.3 ± 1.7 yrs) underwent the functional movement screen. Person correlation showed no significant relationship between functional tests and playing experience, while age showed significant, but weak relationship with total functional score (r = 0.189; p < 0.005). Overall, 44% of participants scored less than 14. Paired sample t-tests show significant bilateral asymmetries in hurdle step, in-line lunge, and shoulder mobility tests. Functional movement screen was useful in identifying functional limitations and asymmetries in young female athletes. However, as neither age nor playing experience were strongly associated with functional score, more attention should be given to the qualitative movement assessment of individual tests, rather than the composite score.

Motivation is widely accepted to be a crucial aspect of language learning, and a variety of models of motivation have been proposed over the years. The L2 Motivational Self System is a particularly interesting model that reconceptualizes motivation as a function of possible future self-guides, and has far-reaching pedagogical implications. Critics have pointed out that there is little evidence connecting L2 Motivational Self System to attainment, as it is inconsistently correlated with L2 proficiency and is only a weak predictor of results. However, as this paper details, these criticisms ignore the correlation between the L2 Motivational Self System and other behaviors and attitudes associated with attainment, such as willingness to communicate, self-efficacy, persistent learning, and low L2 anxiety.

In this article, we consider a reading test developed by the CILS Certification Centre of the Università per Stranieri di Siena, designed for students of Italian as a Foreign Language. The so-called “information detection test” is a variant of a true/false test. We have studied the design of the test (level B1, summer 2009), examined its goals, collected data based on samples tested on foreigners and natives. Numerous critical issues are identified making the tests poorly suited to the certifying body’s purposes, as we demonstrated in a previous research (Torresan 2014).

The objective of the article is a theoretical and practical analysis of the use of selected English determiners (e.g. articles, quantifiers, etc.) by Polish users of English representing different proficiency levels (B2-C2, in accordance with the CEFR, which stands for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The practical part of the article will be centred on the demonstration of the use of the selected determiners based on the available corpus of L2 users (PELCRA - PLEC). The first acronym denotes Polish and English Language and Corpora for Research and Applications (PELCRA), which is the result of scientific work of scholars from the University of Łódź. The other one (PLEC), stands for PELCRA English Learner Corpus (see the “References” section below). It is commonly known that learners/students find it difficult to use English determiners properly, as they are differently realised in their native language. It is generally assumed that learners/students will demonstrate different strategies in the use of the determiners in question. The strategies selected by them will revolve around hesitations, overuse, avoidance, non-use of the definite article the or the word that. Hence such idea of the research occurred, the objective of which is to verify and demonstrate learners’/students’ performance with reference to the selected words, which are challenging in all contexts.

This article discusses the assessment of pronunciation instruction under a new approach to pronunciation teaching centered on the role of connected speech in the prosodic system of English. It also offers a detailed discussion of various empirical problems in teaching-oriented L2 pronunciation research and suggests ways of addressing them in intervention studies. A new explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was developed for this study, which was used to assess 10 advanced EFL learners in Germany before and after 13 weeks of instruction. The results revealed co-occurring developments in learners’ use of prosody and connected speech in line with the rationale of the approach. The findings lead to various implications for language teaching and assessment. For future research, ways are suggested to increase the validity and predictiveness of L2 pronunciation research from both empirical and pedagogical perspectives.

Zespół autorów zorganizował pierwsze w Polsce badania biegłości pobierania próbek LPG z cysterny samochodowej. Niewłaściwy nadzór laboratorium nad pobieraniem próbek LPG może spowodować niemiarodajne wyniki badań, a co za tym idzie przekazywanie niewłaściwej informacji klientowi laboratorium. Może się zatem przyczynić do błędnych decyzji podejmowanych przez klienta na podstawie wyników badań.
Sampling is a key part of the analytical process and significantly affect the result. One of the key elements to demonstrate competence in the field of laboratory sampling is to participate in proficiency tests. The team of authors organized the first Polish proficiency testing for LPG sampling from cistern. Wrong supervision of LPG sampling can lead to obtaining inaccurate test results, and thus the transmission of incorrect information to laboratory customer. This may lead to wrong decisions taken by the customer based on the test results.

W artykule omówiono rezultaty analizy dostępności programów badań biegłości (PT) i porównań międzylaboratoryjnych (ILC) wymaganych w procesach akredytacji i nadzoru laboratoriów badawczych. W wyniku przeglądu zebranych materiałów dotyczących organizowanych programów PT i ILC sformułowano uwagi mające na celu zdefiniowanie zagrożeń w omawianym obszarze oraz ułatwienie świadomego wyboru właściwego programu PT akredytowanym i ubiegającym się o akredytację laboratoriom badawczym. Przedstawiono działania Zespołu Laboratoriów Badawczych Instytutu Techniki Budowlanej na rzecz zapewnienia wysokiej jakości prowadzonych badań biegłości.
The article discusses the results of analysis of proficiency testing schemes (PT) and interlaboratory comparisons (ILC) availability. Review of the material concerning the organized PT and ILC allowed to develop certain remarks aimed at defining the risks in this area and to provide the help in selection of appropriate PT schemes. Contained information may be useful to the accredited testing laboratories, as well as to those applying for accreditation. The article also presents the summary of activities of the Group of Testing Laboratories of Building Research Institute ensuring the high quality of proficiency testing.

Language assessment has recently attracted a great deal of attention of both researchers and practitioners, which is evidenced, among other things, by a number of well-known monographs (Brown & Abeywickrama, 2010; Coombe et al., 2012; Gordon & Rajagopalan, 2016; Gottlieb, 2006; Komorowska, 2002; Tsagari & Banerjee, 2016, to name just a few), as well as a proliferation of journals oriented towards language testing and assessment (e.g., Language Testing, Assessing Writing, Language Assessment Quarterly, International Journal of Language Testing and Assessment, and Educational Assessment). In recent years, great popularity of computers and easy access to the Internet have made it possible to move testing to a new dimension, through enabling Web-based testing (delivered via the internet) as well as computer-adaptive testing (see Krajka, 2016; Malec, 2018; Marczak et al., 2016). The use of computers has enhanced the assessment of not only target language skills and subsystems, which could be easily predicted, but also more complex constructs, such as intercultural communicative competence (Marczak & Krajka, 2014; Wilczyńska et al., 2019). Formative assessment, often referred to as assessment for learning (Black et al., 2003), dynamic assessment (Shohamy, 2015) or alternative assessment (Alismail & McGuire, 2015; Tedesco et al., 2014) is redefining the way school teachers think about assessment, moving them away from testing towards more comprehensive ways of evaluation. At the same time, even though a great number of publications have appeared on teaching young learners, also with a focus on assessment, this does not necessarily translate into widespread awareness of these assessment issues among teachers. The question might arise, then, whether there is a need for a new publication dealing with the complex nature of language assessment, and if yes, what kind of reader to aim at, how to bridge the gap between what is available and what might be desired, and how to structure it to respond to the changing educational reality.

The article is in the form of a case study which aims to prove that a mass-media message cannot be intentionally effective due to an error contained in it. This issue is especially significant in view of the fact that in the welter of information and its accelerating flow, broadcasting organisations are paying less and less attention to linguisticcorrectness, believing that minor errors and flaws do not significantly affect the understanding of the content. Certainly not, but it is worth noting the fact that if such a text is taken as a certain part  or element of the complex interaction between a broadcaster (sender) and mass audience (receiver), a situation can arise in which an error makes the message ineffective in the intentional sphere, as it impedes the receiver’s interpretation of the sender’s intention.
Artykuł ma postać analizy przypadku, przedstawionego w celu udowodnienia, że przekaz medialny nie może być intencjonalnie skuteczny ze względu na zawarty w nim błąd.Jest to problem o tyle istotny, że w sytuacji natłoku i coraz większej szybkości przepływu informacji, coraz mniej uwagi nadawcy medialni poświęcają poprawności językowej, myśląc, że niewielkie błędy i usterki nie wpłyną znacząco na rozumienie treści. Z pewnością nie, ale warto wziąć pod uwagę, że jeżeli taki tekst ujmie się jako pewną część, element złożonej interakcji nadawcymedialnego z odbiorcą masowym, może dojść do sytuacji, że błąd spowoduje nieskuteczność przekazu w sferze intencjonalnej, ponieważ zakłóci odczytanie intencji nadawcy przez odbiorcę.

The Speech Learning Model states that the process of equivalence classification reduces the accuracy of a similar L2 sound by forming an L1-L2 merged category whereas new sounds tend to be pronounced with greater accuracy due to lack of perceptual linkage with an L1 category (Flege 1995). We found further support for this differentiation in the production of the canonical schwa as a new sound by L1 Polish/L2 English speakers and as a similar sound by L1 Romanian/L2 English speakers, who produced an L1-L2 schwa merger. The aim of the current paper is to further investigate the production accuracy of new and similar sounds. First of all, a control group that consisted of native Romanian speakers was used to analyse the L1-L2 similar sound merger. Secondly, a measure of overall pronunciation ability based on foreign accent ratings (FAR) was included. The results confirm that production accuracy for new sounds is much greater than for similar sounds which form merged diaphones with the equivalent L1 sound. As a result, neither sound is produced on target when compared to a native speaker reference. Moreover, new sound production accuracy benefits much more from an increase in general proficiency and overall L2 pronunciation ability.

The aim of the article is the analysis of the results of the empirical research concerning the process of acquisition of English article system by Polish learners, carried out at three different levels of L2 acquisition. English articles, as a semantic category non-existent in Polish, constitute a notorious source of difficulties in their acquisition by Poles. Polish learners of English at the beginning of their education, being at the elementary level, do not actually acquire articles because of the lack of associations with Polish counterparts. The semantics of English articles differs while compared to Polish, where instead of the articles: a/an, the demonstrative pronouns occur, e.g. ten (this), tamten (that) or there exists a different word order, different intonation, verbal aspects and many other syntactic-semantic processes. While teaching English, we may easily observe that the process of acquisition of English article system by Polish learners differs depending on the level of advancement in learning English. In my article I would like to familiarize the addressees with the question of acquisition of articles by young teenagers, late teenagers and young adults. I hope the results of my research will evoke an interesting source for scientific discourse.

Following the call in Sandlund, Sundqvist, and Nyroos (2016) for incorporating discursive approaches into the field of oral second language (L2) testing, this paper proposes an interactional usage-based approach to the analysis of oral L2 performance. Based on Eskildsen (2018a), we combine analytic tools from usage-based linguistics and conversation analysis. We draw on usage-based linguistics to analyze performance in terms of test-takers’ inventories of linguistic constructions and on conversation analysis to understand their interactional competence in terms of the relation between the linguistic constructions and the actions they are used to accomplish. Performance assessment is thus constructional and interactional. Participants in this pilot study were two Danish primary school children who performed two consecutive oral tasks: a semi-guided interview and a picture-elicited narrative task. Data were analyzed by means of cross-child comparisons and cross-task comparisons within each child. Our data confirm the observation from previous research that simple question-answer(-assessment) sequences dominate oral test formats, but also that the format is sometimes abandoned, which allows for the accomplishment of new social actions. Moreover, the picture-description task affords a different speech exchange system with the interviewer participating more as an active listener when the children do not voluntarily carry out the requested task.

The taking of samples is a very important stage in the process of preparing representative material for tests and obtaining reliable test results. The laboratories that strive for high quality of the services they offer should monitor their test results against the background of the results obtained by other reputable laboratories that provide similar services. In the pursuing of this objective, an excellent tool is the proficiency testing, which makes it possible to confirm the competence of laboratories to carry out fuel tests and/or to take fuel samples. The Automotive Industry Institute (PIMOT), as a leading body engaged in Poland in examining the quality of the propane-butane gas (LPG) used as a fuel, organized tests of the proficiency at taking LPG samples from a dispenser at a filling station. The tests were carried out for a number of laboratories that provided services within a similar scope. The laboratories participating in this project took fuel samples and sent them to the organizer for the samples to be tested and for the method of taking the LPG samples to be verified. In the article, the importance of taking the samples and of participating in the tests of proficiency at taking samples of liquefied propane-butane gas has been presented, the method of preparing representative material for tests and of verifying the homogeneity and stability of the batch under test has been described, and the approach to the examination of proficiency at taking LPG samples from a dispenser at a filling station has been discussed. The proficiency test results obtained from the participants have been presented, discussed, and analysed.
Pobieranie próbek jest bardzo istotnym etapem w procesie przygotowania reprezentatywnego materiału do badań i uzyskania miarodajnego wyniku. Laboratoria, które chcą zapewnić wysoką jakość oferowanych przez siebie usług, powinny monitorować uzyskiwane wyniki na tle innych renomowanych laboratoriów świadczących podobne usługi. W tym celu doskonałym narzędziem są badania biegłości umożliwiające potwierdzenie kompetencji laboratoriów do wykonywania badań i/lub pobierania próbek. Przemysłowy Instytut Motoryzacji, jako wiodąca jednostka badająca w Polsce jakość gazu propan – butan stosowanego jako paliwo, zorganizował badania biegłości pobierania LPG z odmierzacza stacji paliw. Uczestnikami były laboratoria świadczące usługi w podobnym zakresie. Uczestnicy pobierali próbki i przesyłali je do organizatora celem wykonania badań i sprawdzenia sposobu pobierania gazu LPG.W artykule opisano znaczenie pobierania próbek oraz uczestnictwa w badaniach biegłości z zakresu pobierania skroplonego gazu propan – butan, omówiono sposób przygotowania reprezentatywnego materiału badawczego, weryfikacji jednorodności i stabilności partii oraz omówiono podejście do badań biegłości z zakresu pobierania LPG z odmierzacza. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań biegłości uzyskane od uczestników i dokonano ich omówienia oraz analizy.
