Potocka Anna z Działyńskich (1846-1926) - korespondencja
Opis:
Anna Potocka, née Działyńska, was an eminent, recognised social activist, as well as the author of a journal marked by its high informative value, short books with advice for mothers bringing up children, and handbooks concerning herbalism. Her rich correspondence was partly destroyed and is currently scattered (the article speci es the places in which it is kept). The letter, which I purchased accidently, concerns some nancial a airs of the Potocki marriage to do with the use of the forests in the area of Rymanów and shows the socio-economic relations rather typical for Galicia at that time.

Opis:
The concept of silk paper (German: Seidenpapier) refers to a wide assortment of paper with a basis weight below 25 grams/sq. metre, including so-called Japanese and Chinese tissue paper (6-8 grams/square metre), which does not include any silk fibres. The reason for this state of things is probably the use of the same Chinese ideogram for describing silk, paper and mulberry. Pertinent literature does not mention any publications on the production of silk paper. Consequently, a series of tests and research experiments were conducted pertaining to the possibility of producing specialist paper for the conservation of silk fabric, and composed of silk fibres. Close adherence to the contemporary conservation principle entailing the usage of conservation material containing the same raw material which was applied for making the historical object leads to the simple conclusion that paper intended for the conservation of silk fabrics should be made of identical fibres. Up to now, this postulate has not been put into practice, since due to its chemical structure silk fibre does not show any paper-creating properties. The basic goal of the research was, therefore, to obtain material built of the same fibre as the historical fabric, but blended within a different structure. The possibilities of using paper for the conservation of silk fabrics are manifold — sheets of paper are glued underneath fabric, and missing parts of the fabric are supplemented with patches and a fluid silk mass on low pressure tables — both methods will make it possible to work on large surfaces of the fabric and to attain its stabilisation. “Dyeing in the paper mass” will enable a quicker selection of a suitable colour foundation reinforcing the original fabric. Application samples have confirmed the excellent properties of the new material, and wet and dry aging tests have proved its excellent parameters. Silk paper has been registered in the Patent Office, and is a legally protected invention.

Opis:
In 1782 Jan Bogumił Plersch used the tempera technique to execute painted decorations of the walls, ceiling, wardrobes and two doors in the octagonal study in the Mokronowski manor house in Jordanowice. The decoration involves arabesque-grotesque ornaments and candelabra arabesques composed of masks and medallions with allegorical figures depicted against a light-hued backdrop. The general purpose of the conservation was to halt the destruction and degradation of the historical polychrome by gluing loose fragments and reinforcing strata of the floating coat, to gether with the construction foundation (by using organic silicone compounds), and halting the unhampered migration of salt within stratigraphie layers. It was necessary to employ desalination compresses. Subsequently, the polychrome surface was cleaned and secondary stratification — repainting, darkened retouching, putty and patches — were removed. The execution of the supplementation was adapted to the degree of the destruction of adjoining strata, with due care not to introduce measures that could prove to be excessively strong, cohesive and binding. It became indispensable to use wide-porous plaster. Aesthetic conservation encompassed both the ornaments and the background of the decoration as well as the reconstruction of n o n -ex tan t fragments of the polychrome. Due to the extensive devastation of the original painted layer it was necessary to conduct numerous consultations and detailed co-ordination concerning the character and range of the reconstruction. The reconstruction of the painted stratum was carried out upon the basis of an analogy with preserved fragments in the study, archival material and comparisons with other realisations by J. B. Plersch. Conceptions of aesthetic solutions were presented on boards. Owing to the decorative nature of the polychrome, it was decided to resort to emulation retouching in a minimally lighter tone.

Opis:
A membrane-bound UDP-glucose : sterol glucosyltransferase from Solanum melongena (eggplant) leaves was partially purified and its specificity as well as molecular and kinetic properties were defined. Among a wide spectrum of 3-OH steroids (i.e. typical plant sterols, androstane, pregnane and cholestane derivatives, steroidal alkaloids and sapogenins) and triterpenic alcohols, the highest activity was found with 22-oxycholesterol. UDP-glucose appeared to be the best sugar donor. The enzyme preparation was also able to utilize UDP-galactose, TDP-glucose and CDP-glucose as a sugar source for sterol glucosylation, however, at distinctly lower rates. The investigated glucosyltrasferase was stimulated by 2-mercaptoethanol, Triton X-100 and negatively charged phospholipids, and inhibited in the presence of UDP, mono-, di- and triacylglycerols, divalent cations such as Zn2+, Co2+, high ionic strength, cholesteryl glucoside, galactoside and xyloside and some amino acid-modifying reagents (SITS, DIDS, PLP, DEPC, pCMBS, NEM, WRK and HNB). Our results suggest that unmodified residues of lysine, tryptophan, cysteine, histidine and dicarboxylic amino acids are essential for full enzymatic activity and indicate that a glutamic (or aspartic) acid residue is necessary for the binding of sugar donor, i.e. UDP-glucose in the active site of the GT-ase while histidine and cysteine residues are both important for the binding of the nucleotide-sugar as well as of the steroidal aglycone.

Among the steryl glycosides tested (e.g. typical plant steryl glucosides, steryl galactosides and cholesteryl xyloside) the highest activity was found with cholesteryl glucoside, but some structurally related compounds such as sito- and stigmasteryl glucoside or galactoside as well as cholesteryl galactoside were also acylated, albeit at lower rates. The investigated enzyme was able to use all classes of phosphoglycerolipids (phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylglycerol) as an acyl source for biosynthesis of acylated steryl glucoside. Among them 1,2-dimirystoylphosphatidylic acid appeared to be the best acyl donor. Apart from phosphoglycerolipids, 1,2-diacylglycerols were also used as acyl donor for steryl glucoside acylation, although at a distinctly lower rate. The acyl moiety was transferred from the C-1 position of phospholipid molecule. The investigated acyltrasferase activity was stimulated by 2-mercaptoethanol, Triton X-100, 1-monoacylglycerols and inhibited in the presence of divalent cations such as Ca2+, Mn2+, Zn2+ or Co2+, some lipids (MDGD, ceramide), detergents (Tween 20, 40, 60 and 80, Tyloxapol, sodium deoxycholate) and high ionic strength.

Potocka’s view, the author reflects on the problem of mask and facial expression in the life and work of S.I. Witkiewicz. They appear here as an expression of philosophy of man, a specific feature of the personality of the author of Szewcy [The Shoemakers] whose whole life, artistic and philosophical activity was marked by “facial expression”. The article also reminds the unusually important texts of Stefan Szuman, Witkacy’s friend, who points to the essence of Witkacy’s portraits. The last question discussed in this article is the problem of ascribing to Witkacy of the authorship of most of the photographs in which he is presented (since they are a documentation of his artistic creations) while actually the authors of these photographs are a dozen or so photographer friends of Witkacy.

Opis:
The devastation of historical objects is caused by numerous factors. The gravest threat posed for even the best preserved objects is concealed in moisture. Publications describing the mechanisms of damage caused by dampness are extremely extensive, and their discussion exceeds the space provided by this article. To put it in most general terms, moisture causes physico-chemical, mechanical and biological damage. The prime reason for the dampness of building walls is gro u n d -, ra in - and condensation water. The destruction of such an object follows a rapid course, but drying it calls for a long period of time. This is the reason why at the outset of conservation it is necessary to establish the degree of the dampness of the historical building, measure the relative moisture of the air, the dampness and temperature of the wall surfaces, and the heat conduction of the outer walls. Only the determination and identification of the causes of dampness make it possible to formulate a suitable conservation programme and its effective application. An initial analysis and examination of the titular object found that the main reasons for dampness are: 1. the unsuitable drainage of rainwater, 2. the absence of suitable drain pipes on the building and tin roof, 3. the absence of horizontal insulation, 4. the absence of vertical insulation or its inappropriate execution, 5. incorrectly conducted repair. The encroaching threat can be prevented by vertical horizontal insulation of the outer walls, draining the area around the building, including water from the collective sump, and vertical insulation of the inner walls with the polychrome by J. B. Plersch. A suitable selection of the insulation method and its rapid realisation are decisive for halting the progressing destruction of the object in question. Vertical insulation, employing the injection-coating method in the Aida-Kiesol, Remmers system, was conducted on the outer wall. Moisture measurements carried out in the autumn of 2001 confirmed the effectiveness of this particular method. Undoubtedly, such insulation should be applied in the whole object; together with roof repair, this approach will guarantee proper p ro tection against dampness.

Opis:
In 1786, Stanisław Kostka Potocki and Izabela [Elżbieta] Lubomirska stayed in the Kingdom of Naples, where Potocki conducted archaeological excavations in the town of Nola. This city, which in the past lied under the jurisdiction of Władysław IV Vasa, in the 18th century was well known to the inhabitants of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth not only from historical sources, but also as the destination of increasing number of expeditions in search of valuable Attic vases. Stanisław Kostka Potocki travelled to Nola from Naples. The short journey and first impressions of both the landscape and the ruins noticed on the site were described in accordance with the contemporary travel literature convention in his - unfinished - handwritten travel journal Voyage de Nola. Potocki's disappointment with the view of the modern city of Nola, which has only retained some of its former glory, is comparable to the experience of other European aristocrats visiting Italian cities at the time, including Anna Potocka, Stanisław Kostka's daughter-in-law. The article presents the importance of Nola as an archaeological site in the period in question, and, above all, outlines the background of Potocki's visit and the factors that made up his complex assessment of the city.
Stanisław Kostka Potocki do Noli wyruszył z Neapolu.

Regarding its size, references to the royal headstone of Anna Vasa of Sweden and the person’s rank, the monument to Anna Potocka née Lesz-czyńska (1615-1653) is one of the greatest sepulchral artworks in the Saint Mary’s Church in Toruń.It was created after 1653 and funded by the de-ceased’s husband, Jan Teodor Potocki.Potocka descended from a reli¬giously diverse family. Her father converted to Catholicism.Potocka was raised in her mother’s faith and was considered a zealous Calvinist. Her family held great offices in Respublica Poloniae both in catholic and pro¬testant communities. Her grandfather Rafał Leszczyński (ca. 1526-1593) was one of the most active supporters of the Reformation. Her father’s nephew Rafał Leszczyński (1597-1636) was a leader of Protestants called “a Calvinist pope in Poland”. Potocka deceased in Łowicz; however, her body was buried in Toruń due to her faith and the rank of the church, which was used by the Lutherans in the years 1557-1724 and during the Counter-Reformation it was a refuge to Protestants living in the southern part of Royal Prussia. In 16th and 17th century, Toruń, along with Gdańsk and Elbląg, was one of the most prestigious centres of Protestantism in Poland. It is probable that the heroine’s funeral ceremonies were modelled on the Anna Vasa’s funeral (1636) at which both Potocki and Leszczyński families were present. The monument to Potocka is located at the wall closing the fourth yoke of the nave, counting from the East.It consists of a portal frame with Leszczyński and Potocki’s family coats of arms. Under its semi-circular ar-cade, there is an inscription board with the family’s genealogy, Potocka’s characteristics and the name of the founder. The Potocka’s monument fits into the category of inscription epitaphs associated with the portal. It integrates two functions: commemoration and glorification. The latter is expressed by the portal as a door: a motive of symbolic passage into another reality, or as a triumphal arch, an element of exaltation, similarly to the arcade and columns. The monument was made of limestone of Dębnik and alabaster, artifi-cial stone, lime mortar imitating the black marble and alabaster. In 2009, it was restored back to its former splendour.Nodocumentation of theformer repair works have been preserved. As a result of unprofessional restoration, the object’s plastic and aesthetical qualities changed entirely. Before the recent restoration, gold plating and fragments of polychromy were visible, which provided the basis for their reconstruction.

The situation of Polish society, divided by occupants, pushed them to take steps that demanded special skills but also sacrifice and many victims. Educated people, besides all the reasonable worries about their wealth and heritage, felt morally obliged to be responsible for ethical and material values of Polish people. Anna Potocka from Działyński family, the successor of not only the wealth but also great patriotic tradition of her forefathers, is a perfect example of such an attitude. Anna and her husband Stanisław were truly engaged in charity and various educational ventures. Among many, the most interesting was establishing sculpture school for boys and lace school for girls, both created in Oleszyce. The separate passage in Anna’s life concerned acquiring of an estate in Rymanów and discovering a mineral water spring there. This period was a permanent struggle against the fate of her private and professional life. Unbroken character, stubbornness and strong belief in her enterprise finally led her to success. The entire life of Anna Potocka proved that despite meeting many diversities, it was possible to achieve success being a dignified patriot and a devoted social worker at the same time.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the etchings collected in the album Vues de Pologne, dedicated to Anna (Anetka) Tyszkiewiczówna (1779-1867). Throughout her life, she was involved in amateur artistic work: drawing, painting and, above all, design, which left its mark on the palace and garden layouts in Wilanów, Natolin, Mokotów, Jabłonna and Zator. The album was created as a result and as a memoir of her stay in Vienna in 1795. At that time she took drawing and etching lessons from the French painter Ignace Duvivier (1758-1832) – an artist that was later accepted as a member of the local academy. Apart from the title page, in its basic version the album contains nine views mainly of Warsaw and its surroundings. Tyszkiewiczówna was the author of all the drawing patterns, she also transferred them onto the printing plates. In these works she clearly preferred landscape motifs over vedutas. She tried to reflect the mood of the moment through a lively, energetic line and strong value contrasts. She composed sentimental, subjective landscapes with little care for accuracy or realism in the representation of reality. It is also possible that the latter feature was intensified by the recreation of patterns from her memory, in Vienna, far away from the portrayed places. Evaluating the artistic value of her works—in terms of the technique used they do not differ at all from the works of her teacher—one should remember that they are juvenile works since the author was only sixteen at that time. Her plates were reused at the beginning of the 19th century for commercial purposes – six out of nine etchings adorned the 1811 edition of “The Political, Chronological and Historical Calendar”, printed by Jan Ludwik Koch. On the basis of the considerable number of prints in collectors’ circulation—those from 1795 as well as those from 1811—it is possible to conclude that this part of her work is exceptionally popular for an amateur. But after this youthful experience, Anna née Tyszkiewicz, primo voto Potocka, secundo voto Dunin-Wąsowiczowa, never returned to the etching technique.

Opis:
Background: While moderate physical exercise has positive effects on the cardiovascular system, the data regarding intensive endurance sports is biased with studies suggesting that the inflammatory response to strenuous exercise may act proarrhythmogenic. In amateurs, the effects of intensive endurance exercise on the cardiovascular system have not been studied. Analysis of the effects of a marathon on the kinetics of inflammatory biomarkers may bring new insights into this issue. Material and methods: We studied the effect of a marathon on the kinetics of inflammatory biomarkers: Endothelin-1 (ET-1), Pentraxin-3 (PTX-3), Neopterin and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the population of 35 amateur male marathoners. The study was divided into 3 stages: two weeks prior to the marathon (S1), at the finish line (S2) and two weeks after (S3). Blood analyses for biomarkers were performed at each stage. Results: The concentrations of ET-1 (3.20 ± 0.90 vs. 1.30 ±0.34 pg/ml, p <0,001), PTX-3 (441.09 ± 295.64 vs. 279.99 ± 125.68 pg/ml, p < 0,001), Neopterin (9.97 ± 2.17 vs. 8.36 ± 2.68 nmol/l, p < 0,05) and IL-6 (32.5 ± 13.90 vs. 0.97 ± 0.77 pg/ml, p < 0,001) were significantly higher at S2 compared to S1. Conclusions: Running a marathon causes an acute rise in concentrations of inflammatory biomarkers. Further research is needed on the long-term effects of intensive endurance exercise on the cardiovascular system.

Opis:
Effects of environmental exposures in utero and in the first years of life on early life health and development is a growing research area with major public health implications. The main aim of this work has been to provide an overview of the next step of the Polish Mother and Child Cohort Study (REPRO_PL) covering exposure, health and neurodevelopment assessments of children at 7 years of age. Details regarding methodology of the follow-up of the children are crucial for cross-cohort collaboration and a full understanding of the future research questions. Phase III of the REPRO_PL cohort covers a follow-up of 900 children at the age of 7 years old. The questionnaire filled in by the mothers is composed of: socio-demographic, child exposure and home environment information, nutritional status and health data. In the case of 400 children, environmental (including collection of urine, saliva and buccal cells), health status and psychomotor assessments are performed. Health and development check consists of physical measurements, child health status assessment (including lung function tests, skin prick testing, an interview/examination by an allergist) and psychomotor development tests (the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire and the Intelligence and Development Scales). The results of the study will become available within the next few years. Extension of the REPRO_PL cohort with examinations of children at the age of 7 years old may provide a better understanding of the relationship between environmental and lifestyle-related factors and children’s health and neurodevelopment; and may further strengthen scientific base for policies and interventions promoting healthy lifestyle.
