Opis:
The article describes the stylistic shape of biblical Polish language in the fi rst half of 16th century. This stylistic aspect has been analyzed in two perspectives. The fi rst one – the contemporary reception – shows several opinions of scientists, who work on the language of old Polish religious texts; the second perspective is the current language custom from the period of the texts’ creation. Materials for the second type of analysis were excerpted from the stylistic and language comments made upon creating the biblical texts by their authors and from the discussion led between Jan Sandecki-Malecki, Stanisław Murzynowski and Jan Seklucjan.

W Muzeum Regionalnym w Pyzdrach (miasteczko nad Wartą) znajdują się szesnastowieczne rękopiśmienne zabytki językowe (języka polskiego). Zabytki zawierają treść przywilejów mieszczańskich z Pyzdr (drugiej połowy XVI wieku). W artykule zamieszczono krótki opis przywilejów dotyczących miasta królewskiego Pyzdr. Dokonano analizy zabytków w kontekście udokumentowanych zjawisk językowych Wielkopolski (ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem cech regionalnych).
In the Regional Museum in Pyzdry (a town on the Warta River) there are sixteenth-century handwritten Polish language texts. The texts contain the content of town privileges from Pyzdry (second half of the 16th century). The article contains a short description of the privileges concerning the royal city of Pyzdry. The historical texts were analyzed in the context of documented linguistic phenomena in Wielkopolska (with particular emphasis on regional features).

Opis:
This article is dedicated to the issue of Polish and Russian language contacts in the 16th and 17th centuries. The analysed Old Belarusian historical assets document the presence of foreign vocabulary assimilated via the Polish language. Research shows that the Polish Language of that period formed a medium used to transfer words of German, Latin, Czech or Italian origin to the Belorusian land. The functioning of such borrowings has been tracked on the basis of two popular literary genres on the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – chronicles (Kronika Supraska and Kronika Bychowca), representing original Belorusian literature, and chivalric romance (Białoruski Tristan), which was an example of translated literature. Loanwords supplemented native lexical resources with lacking units to name such areas as state, church and military institutions, living needs, war craft and the life of knights.

This paper discusses the first 3 mentions of the entry LUTER, as a common word, in the Polish language. They were recorded by Bartlomiej of Bydgoszcz in his dictionaries dated 1532 and 1544. According to the analysis made in the article, these are the examples of extremely quick registration of a new word in the Polish language, and most probably the only confirmations of this lexeme in dictionaries in 16th century and two subsequent centuries. The detailed write-up of the location of the entry LUTER in both dictionaries by Bartlomiej allowed the recollection of the lexicographic method applied by the monk and – in comparison with other religious Polish vocabulary – emphasizing the uniqueness of recording the entry LUTER as a common word, only a dozen years after the Reformation.

Opis:
A contribution to the history of modifiers of time. The 24-hour span of time in the description of 16th-century memoirists The present article is devoted to the selected determiners of time in the early Polish language. The author studies the indication of time within a 24-hour span of time, documented in 16th-century memoirs. In the analysis one may distinguish two groups of temporal constructions. The first one is associated with the ways in which a point of time is indicated (przed godziną wtórą a dwudziestą; raniuczko, skoro ze dniem; trzy godziny po miesiącu); another one is associated with the indication of the duration of an action/state (np. pół ćwierci godziny). In the evolution of the perception of the world it is above all the changes imposed by the development of science and technology that are relevant – in this case the means of measuring time and space. A prominent feature of 16th-century texts is associated with the diversity of description associated with the class of the anteriorly prevailing perception of time with the new systems of keeping time. One is struck not only by the diversity but also the richness of the ways of expressing temporal relations, which enable a subtle modelling of description.

Opis:
The material presented in the article comes from the second edition (1571) of the Polish translation of the reference manual by Peturs de Crescentius. To the extent posiible, it was identified and confronted with the historical botanic vocabulary. The aim of the analysis is to trace the mechanism of naming plants described in the manual and to research how the fitonyms functioned in the historical Polish language at that time as well as in the subsequent centuries. It has been noticed that most names of the pre-Slavic and pre-Indo_European origin fossilize and do not alter throughout the history of the Polish language. Words of younger origin frequently illustrate the phonetic changes which took place in order to simplify articulation. Examples of secondary nominalization, taken from the text, other hand, they manifest the use of word-formative mechanisms. Some of the names have disappeared, while others have survived and appear in the botanic nomenclature of the 18th century (in K. Kluk). Moreover, the material analyzed shows the creative input of the translator of the work, who evinced good intuition in choosing the terms which have stood the test of time (e.g. faseol, lubczyk, por).

Opis:
The article treats of the intensive particles (affective) in 16thcentury translations of the Gospel to Polish language. The presence of expressive particles (emotive ones) is a specific feature of the old Polish language and of the local dialects. In 16th century translations of the Gospel we can found a lot of different particles too, such as a, i, to, but the most frequent are że and ci. Only these particles are shortened to -ż and -ć, usually when placed after the vowel, but sometimes not, as can be seen in such examples as jeśliż and jeśliże, as well as jeślić and jeślici. The article presents the origin of particle ci and the proposals of its transcription for the texts of A type, i.e. the publications strictly scientific, documentation ones, for research purposes. There is also covered the diverse frequency of particles ci/-ć and że/-ż in nine different 16th century translations of the Gospel to Polish language, from the highest frequency in Bible from Brześć, to smallest in Szymon Budny’s translations. An attempt to present the reasons of this diversity is also the subject of the article: it is shown that especially the chronology of texts influences this phenomenon, in a smaller extent the religion (confession) of translators.

Opis:
In a verse of Act 23,23 in Biblia gdańska (1632) translated by Daniel Mikołajewski, an equivalent of Greek lexeme δεξιόλαβος ‘probably a spearman or slinger’, the noun drabant is used, which is unique, compared to its counterpart – oszczepnik – in Biblia translated by JakubWujek (1599). It may have been borrowed from the Czech language in the second half of the 16th century. In the Polish language of the time it was not a very widespread lexeme, maybe of erudite nature. It appeared in the text of Biblia gdańska taken from the Czech Biblia kralicka. Among Protestants at that time, as a military term, it could have evoked associations with the religious Hussite Wars. The lexeme drabant survived in the biblical text of the Evangelist circles until the second half of the twentieth century. Given the fact that in that century it was already an archaic word, it was not used in new testament translations which followed the translational tradition of Biblia gdańska. And probably it became fixed in the consciousness of the faithful of Evangelist churches as a memorable reminder of the past. For centuries that lexeme, along with other lexemes characteristic of Biblia gdańska caused lexical distinctiveness of that Evangelist translation compared to the Catholic translation by Jakub Wujek.

Opis:
Lexemes Evangelic and Protestant appeared in the Polish language in the middle of the 16th century. The name Evangelic was first used by Stanislaw Orzechowski in the work Rozmowa około egzekucyjej of 1563. The name Protestant was created in connection with the protest of Martin Luther’s followers at the Diet of Speyer and its only 16th century attestation comes from Marcin Kromer’s work Mnicha z dworzaninem rozmowa trzecia of 1553. This lexeme also functioned in the meaning not related to religious issues but resulting from the Latin basis. A general name applied in the 16th c. in relation to the Reformation’s followers was the lexeme Evangelic used, among others, by Bielski, Wujek or Skarga. At that time, apart from Evangelic, names reflecting internal diversity of the movement were in use such as, among others, luteran, luteryjan, luter, kalwinista, kalwinita, kalwin or auszpurczanin as well as general names such as konfessyjonista. In subsequent centuries the lexeme Protestant popularized in the first non-religious meaning as a synonym of an opponent. Dictionary resource material from the 17th and 18th centuries concerning the above mentioned lexemes does not allow to claim whether they became synonyms already in the Middle Polish period. The process of semantic identification of the lexemes finished in the Modern Polish period, which is confirmed by both the Polish language dictionaries and the most recent Polish language included in the National Corpus of Polish. It appears that such identification is a result of expiration of the first sub-meaning of the lexeme Protestant as well as an effect of the manner of defining this lexeme involving separation of a religious meaning from specified historical events. When the lexemes appeared in the 16th century, the lexeme Evangelic prevailed whereas currently the lexeme Protestant is more popular.

The names mentioned have been excerpted from the published volumes of Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku (“Dictionary of the 16thcentury Polish Language”). The article presents their origin and a consecutive history. What must be noted is quite big variety of the names of clergypersons of the denominations other than Catholic in the Polish language of the 16th century. Additionally, we can notice stability of those basic, most common designations. They are generally continued in contemporary Polish, not only in its specialist ecclesiastical variety.

Opis:
The article presents normalization of the Polish literary language in prints from the first half of the 16th century. It was a breakthrough period for the normalization process in which the activities aimed at limiting the variation of language forms were intensified. The linguistic analysis presented here focuses on two groups of sixteen-century texts: Polish palaeotypes, that is the prints from Cracow from the years 1521–1522 as well as on the writings of Andrzej Glaber of Kobylin published in the years 1535–1539 in the Cracow publishing house of Florian Ungler and his wife Helena where he performed various functions: of an author, translator and editorpublisher. The observation and study of variance of language forms and its limitation enables us not only to determine the degree of normalization of the Polish language in particular periods, but also to characterize the attitude to standards of sixteen-century publishers of Polish books. On the basis of the comparison of normalization of Polish in palaeotypes from the years 1521–1522 and in the works of Andrzej Glaber from the years 1535–1539 we can conclude that the first half of the 16th century was characterized by particular standards. It is difficult to notice an apparent continuity of the normalizationtradition. Nevertheless, we can discern in this period a developing progressive trend in the normalization of the Polish literary language which quickly became widespread. The group of progressive normalizers definitely includes: the anonymous editor of Żywot Pana Jezu Krysta, printed in the publishing house of Hieronim Wietor, Jan from Koszyczki, Hieronim from Wieluń (Spiczyński) and Andrzej Glaber. In the later period also Jan Seklucjan and Stanisław Murzynowski joined this group, the polemicists who broke the old linguistic traditionsof Jan Sandecki-Malecki. Nowadays, on the basis of the findings of numerous historical-linguistic analyses, the victory of this progressive option is quite apparent..

The article presents the results of a quantitative analysis of the vocabulary attested in the Polish translation of the work of Pietro de‘ Crescenzi (Piotr Krescentyn) Księgi o gospodarstwie (original title: Opus ruralium commodorum) against the statystical characteristics of the translations of the New Testament from the latter half of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth century, and the text of Wizerunek własny żywota człowieka poczciwego (The Life of the Honest Man) by Mikołaj Rej. The following statystical parameters were studied: the number of words, the number of entries, K quantity factor, arithmetic mean of the frequency of entries, dispersion of entries, vocabulary originality parameter I, distribution of the autosemantic parts of speech (lexical category) and the distribution of individual autosemantic parts of speech (lexical categories). The analysis shows that, with regard to the statistical approach, the vocabulary of Księgi... is rather closer to Wizerunek than to the translations of the New Testament – in comparison to the latter, Księgi... is characterized by a far more ample vocabulary, greater number of entries and autosemantic words, greater number of attested nouns, adverbs in particular (the latter group is characterized by a higher percentage of entries with high frequency). Księgi..., as compared to the translations of the New Testament, also abounds with participles whose repertory is not only more numerous with regard to words but also to entries. The analysis confims the observation made by Władysław Kuraszkiewicz with reference to the dependence between the quantity of vocabulary and the content of texts – the closer it is to real life and refers to its diverse aspects, the richer vocabulary is used for its rendering.

The article is a continuation of the research on linguistic variance in the first Polish edition of Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn (Krakow 1549, Helena Unglerowa). The inflectional forms were analyzed: the dative, instrumental and locative of plural nouns. The investigated issues included: textual differentiation, scope and degree of normalization of the particular alterations. The results of the analysis were compared with the results of research on other texts from the first half of the 16th century. The conclusions are: a) the books certify the initial but advanced stage of the demorphologization process of gender in plural nouns; b) the text distribution of most variants is even, the discontinuous textual distribution is characterized by only three inflectional forms: koniem and ludziom in the dative case, -och in the instrumental of the plural form of masculines; c) the state certified in the books is in most categories convergent with the state certified in other texts, the exception is the form of the instrumental and locus of masculine and neuter nouns; d) in the analyzed area, Księgi show little convergence with the language of Glaber’s texts (preferring the forms: ludziem in the dative case, -ami in the instrumental case, occasional end-case -och in the locative of masculines).

The article attempts the technical determination of the graphic and phonetic variance acknowledged in the Polish edition of the Żywoty filozofów by Mikuláš Konáč. The method used was to analyze the distribution of oppositional graphic forms. It has been determined that the technical nature of the print is 9 variants: 4 graphic variants („j” = /j/ in position before consonant, „j” = /j/ in the voice-over position, „u” = /v/ i /v/ in the midpoint position, „th” = /t/) and 5 phonetic variants (miesce, miejsce, miejstce; wszystko; wieliki); among them are both regressive and progressive forms. The analysis also shows that, using the disclosed technical variants, zecer manipulated the graphical content of the lines in both possible ways: narrowing or widening.
