Persons repressed in the Polish People’s Republic may base their claims for damages only on the provisions of the Act on the Recognition as Invalid of Judgments Issued Against Persons Repressed for their Activities for the Independent Existence of the Polish State. It is excluded to pursue claims in this respect on the basis of civil law or the Constitution. The basic condition for pursuing a claim is the declaration of invalidity of the decision issued by the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic. These rules apply both to those repressed because of the armed struggle and because of the resistance to collectivisation. These claims are not part of the inheritance, but are based on the principle of singular succession.

Polish science quite rarely identifies the postwar period as well as the time of the Polish People’s Republic with modernity or modernization. More often the questions on succumbing and enslavement appear, in particular in recent years we can notice the discourses which compare the period of the Polish People’s Republic to the times of the German occupation, thus the state socialism to the Nazism. Although it may seem that currently it is even more difficult to perceive the times of the Polish People’s Republic as the time of modernization, this is the approach I would like to propose.

The author of the article indicates the relationships between the accounts of Witkacy’s death and its fictional version. Terlecki’s story of a painter who escapes from war, only to commit suicide eventually, became a pretext for discussing the events from September 1939 and March 1968.

First of all, the order they guarded and tried to maintain was presented by propagandist agendas as a total antithesis of the Western world – full of consumption, deprivation, and a source of all imaginable evil. Though, Hydrozagadka was not only a grotesque parody of American superheroes’ productions but also a mocking critique of communistic reality.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to use the category of the musical as a tool for describing the society of the Polish People’s Republic (PPR) era. PPR film musical is shown here to be a rare phenomenon, but a symptomatic one. The author reinterprets the theory of Rick Altman in relation to socialist mass culture, ascribing the duality of cultural and counter-cultural on to the conflict between the interests of disliked powers and the unfulfilled expectations of the citizens. He shows how the analysed films differ from the Hollywood model in the attitude towards work and entertainment, and how they fulfil propaganda and compensatory functions. As a result, the communist musical turns out to be something more than an inept imitation - it becomes a “muzykol” [locally made musical like film, that is not up to Western standards], a cultural metaphor for the communist era in Poland.

Opis:
This journal article discusses articles about the Catholic Church in Poland that appeared in the daily Polish newspaper Trybuna Ludu [The People’s Tribune] in 1949. This official publication of the Polish United Workers’ Party (Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza) played an important role in spreading propaganda during communist rule in the Polish People’s Republic. During this time, the communist authorities sought to subordinate and neutralize the Church. The year 1949 was particularly important in the history of the relationship between the state and the church because it was then that the communist authorities launched a media offensive against the Catholic Church. While the authorities officially claimed to guarantee religious freedom, they forbid religion from being taught in Polish schools and supported only pro-government “patriot priests.” Specifically, Trybuna Ludu reported lawsuits filed against priests who supported the anti-communist underground. An analysis of these articles demonstrates how the communist party used Trybuna Ludu as a tool to spread propaganda.

Opis:
Right from the beginning, the subject of the Warsaw Uprising was often manipulated or even entirely erased from public discourse under the Stalinist regime. It was only after the liberalization of culture and the easing of censorship-related repressions that the said topic returned in literature. The paper focuses on the censorship bureau’s approach to the image of the Uprising presented by writers. Moreover, it attempts to specify – on the basis of specific examples – the kind of content that was accepted, rejected or amended. The juxtaposition of censors’ documents and the content of the published works allows for the examination of the depth of censors’ interventions and their methods of manipulating historical facts. Those areas of special interest include: presentation of the division among the insurgents who were supposed to belong either to the brave ordinary soldiers or the passive leadership, as well as the attitude towards the People’s Army, the First Polish Army, the Home Army or the Red Army, with special regard for its passiveness during the Uprising.

In 2024, the Polish Film Archive – Audiovisual Institute (FINA) has published an impressive volume entitled „The Film Convention in Wisła 1949. Sources – Comments – Studies”. The authors of the academic studies and compilation are Barbara Giza and Adam Wyżyński. It is the first book entirely devoted to the Filmmakers’ Convention in Wisła which took place from 17–20 November. As a result, full convention transcripts have been published for the first time. Part one of the book, entitled „Introduction”, contains three articles by Rafał Habielski, Grzegorz Wołowiec and Piotr Zwierzchowski, presenting the political context of the Convention. The second, main part of the publication contains a transcript of the Convention in Wisła. The great merit of this edition is the thorough editing of the source text and the inclusion of numerous footnotes containing explanations, biographical and film notes, etc. Part three of the book contains „Other source material” relating to the Convention. Also of great value is a set of photographs from the Convention included in the volume; they are an important source material in themselves. The last part contains four articles (by Barbara Giza and Adam Wyżyński, Mariusz Mazur, Piotr Śmiałowski and Jarosław Grzechowiak) which provide commentary on the source batch. The volume devoted to the Convention in Wisła is a well and carefully published, superbly researched item. There is no doubt that the publication will become a must for anyone interested in Polish cinematography, post-war Polish history, or Polish culture.

Things did not look any different in the times of the Polish People’s Republic (PPR). The rhythm of subsequent reform attempts determined the chronology of the development of the situation. The author set himself two goals: chronological ordering and typologisation of reform efforts in the PPR and presentation of the  continuation of certain ways of thinking at the turn of the year 1989. Typologisation was assumed to concern ways of thinking rather than specific people and thus, it is not a biographic guide to reform circles.

In the years 1944–1948, the authorities of communist Poland, for tactical reasons abstained from direct attacks on the Catholic Church. After the establishment of the authorities’ structures and once the political opposition and armed forces underground were defeated, systematic restriction on the influence of the Church begun. Back then, the Catholic Church was the only independent social institution in the country. What was attacked then was, among others, religious education in schools (religious education, crosses and catechists were removed from schools, Catholic education was limited), catholic organisations, charitable and care activities of the Church (at the beginning of 1950, the state took over “Caritas” and kindergartens, children’s homes, hospitals were taken from the Church) as well as publishing activities (Catholic press releases were being restricted). The repressions were hindered by the signature of the Church-State Agreement in April 1950. When in 1952, the activities aimed at the removal of religious education from schools were intensified, several dozens of theological seminaries were dissolved and some of the boarding-schools run by the Church were taken over, then Primate Stefan Wyszyński defined the relations between the Church and the State as a “state of emergency”.

In post-war Poland, rationing was introduced on three occasions: right after the war in 1945, then in 1951, and at the turn of the 1980s. In 1976, rationing cards for sugar were introduced, in 1981 - for meat, fats, cereal products, cleaning products and many other goods. Fuels were the last product added to this list. This article describes the process of introducing a rationing system for petrol in the Polish People’s Republic. Though the supply system crashed as early as 1981, it took several years to organize a rationing system for petrol. Its evolution did not end until 1984. This delay was caused by the long discussions on how the system should be built. This forced the authorities to introduce a whole range of temporary solutions which limited the demand in the short run, but had no soothing effect whatsoever on the society. To the contrary - the chaos they created intensified negative tendencies (such as speculation), led to market insecurity, and increased mistrust of state regulations.

The paper is an attempt at a comparison between the legal-state situation of the Polish Kingdom, established by virtue of the Vienna Congress in 1815, and Polish People’s Republic, established by the Soviet Union in 1944, and confirmed by the United State and Great Britain in 1945. In both cases we dealt with states of limited sovereignty, in which the dominating role was played by Russia, and then by the Soviet Union. In the text we compare the range of internal liberties in both forms of statehood, and the degree of their subjectivity in external relations. At the same time the above comparison points at the fact that the Polish Kingdom, until the fall of the 1830 rising, was the state with a much larger range of internal liberty than the statehood dominated by communists. Accordingly, that period should occupy in the political history of Poland a place comparable with that of Polish People’s Republic.

Opis:
This article shows how the leaders of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR) tried to incorporate the October Revolution into the Polish culture of remembrance. The author concentrates his attention on two round anniversaries (in 1957 and 1967) and describes the limits, zig-zags, and paradoxes of the official politics of memory conducted by the PZPR. He argues that although the Soviet leaders conceived the anniversaries of the October Revolution as a means of strengthening the friendship between the nations, in the case of Poland, they created an opportunity to advance arguments for easing Soviet domination. The author also points out that both the Soviet and Polish cultures of remembrances shared one feature in common: by the late 1960s, the theme of the Second World War started to overshadow all other events from the past, including first and foremost the October Revolution.

Opis:
Artykuł dotyczy nowych mediów, czyli takich, które pojawiły się pod koniec lat siedemdziesiątych XX w. Pretekstem do rozważań na ten temat jest książka P. Sitarskiego, M. B. Gardy i K. Jajko pt. Nowe media w PRL.
The article deals with new media, that is, the media that have emerged since the late 1970s. A pretext for considering this topic is the book: P. Sitarski, M.B. Garda, K. Jajko, Nowe Media w PRL. Following in the footsteps of three Łódź scholars, the author discusses computers and video, which in the last decade of the Polish People’s Republic were considered the most modern media techniques. As such, they played an important role in Polish society.

Opis:
Systemic transformation in Poland after the Second World War led to deep transformations within the economy. It did not, however, change the way people thought. Despite the chaos of the post-war period, in which all the negative features shaped in the period of occupation manifested themselves, it seemed that the conceptual leaders of the Polish political and economic life would create new quality. However, it soon turned out that old habits die hard and the system created by communists opened a field for many abuses. This was accompanied by a sense of impunity, as the most prominent personalities in a given region were also involved in economic scandals. All this resulted in the creation of “cliques” in which both prominent Party activists and people put by the Party in high positions (usually also members of the Polish United Workers’ Party, PUWP) played important roles. On the one hand, after 1956, surveillance by the Security Office (UB) or Security Services (SB) was not that strict anymore, and on the other, the so-called “private initiative” started to develop fast – therefore the more “entrepreneurial” individuals started to exploit the situation and gain wealth. Abusing one’s position to organize large-scale thefts was considered relatively normal. This happened in various forms: sometimes directly, but more often by supporting or even organizing private projects with the use of the national, though unsupervised, supply of raw materials or products. This way, the Party members grew richer at the expense of the companies they worked for. This business was relatively widely tolerated by ordinary citizens, who saw it as an excuse to also “organize” goods individually for their own purposes in the companies which employed them. This common belief that “everybody steals” allowed people to justify their own dishonesty. Any attempts to fight this problem failed to produce satisfactory results. The diagnosis, even if correct, had to face reality, in which the pursuit of a better quality of life by the Party elites collided with the officially promoted ascetic lifestyles of the “ideological communists”, who, like Władysław Gomułka, did not understood the new times.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the Polish reception of science-fiction cinema; the statements of film critics from 1956–1965 were analysed. During this period, science fiction, previously absent from the screens of Polish cinemas for ideological and censorship reasons, returned to the repertoire and became the subject of press discussions and reviews. The analysis of articles devoted to this genre and published at the time allows reconstruction of the cultural context in which science-fiction productions operated. The article consists of three main parts. In the first of these, the author describes which science fiction films were present in Polish cinemas at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. In the second part, he analyses press statements devoted to the history and aesthetics of the genre. The subject under consideration in the third part is the reception of two productions, which at the time enjoyed the greatest interest from contemporary critics: Godzilla (Gojira, 1954, dir. Ishirō Honda) and The Silent Star (Der schweigende Stern 1960, dir. Kurt Maetzig).

Opis:
The essay entitled The Literary Critic in the Polish People’s Republic constitutes an attempt to answer the fundamental question: how one is to present and describe today the Polish literary criticism in the second half of the twentieth century. The essay illustrates that it is worth going beyond the widely accepted view concerning the political and social enslavement of critics and to look at their writings as expressions functioning within an internal system of literary life, accompanied by internal confl icts, myths and hierarchies. For not all of these writings have their origin in the current political system (although they must always refer to the mandatory public discourse). One of the examples of a different than merely a political point of reference here is the moralistic, Catholic self-censorship; another example is the need to defi ne one’s attitude toward the critical-literary tradition, defined above all by such people as Brzozowski and Irzykowski. The acceptance of the inner perspective of a critical expression transfers the whole problem onto the plane of dual reference which is (at all times) a characteristic feature of literary criticism: namely the reference to literature and what is literary and towards “life”, i.e. the sphere of politics, moral choices etc., and to a lack of autonomy as the fundamental issue of the existence of literary criticism.
