Opis:
Celem artykułu jest omówienie znaczenia i aktualności rozważań G.W. Leibniza dla problemu natury oraz roli reprezentacji w poznaniu. Propozycja hanowerskiego filozofa zawiera szereg interesujących intuicji. Leibniz argumentuje na rzecz tezy, że reprezentowanie ma charakter wyrażania tego, do czego dana reprezentacja się odnosi. Nie jest to teza jasna, a pojęcie wyrażania wymaga głębszej analizy i eksplikacji. Po dokonaniu analiz wstępnych drugim krokiem jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy propozycja Leibniza ma rzeczywiście charakter reprezentacyjny, czyli czy postulowane przez filozofa reprezentacje faktycznie pełnią rolę reprezentacji w strukturach poznawczych. Korzystam tu z rozważań i metody W. Ramseya, dotyczących natury wyjaśnień reprezentacyjnych. Na koniec omawiam specyfikę leibnizjańskiej tezy o reprezentacji oraz wskazuję na te jej elementy, które mogą dzisiaj być atrakcyjne dla epistemologów i kognitywistów badających naturę poznania i umysłu.

The article is an attempt at explaining the category of logical form used by Ludwig Wittgenstein in his Tractatus logico-philosophicus by using concepts from Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s The Monadology. There are many similarities and analogies between those works, and the key concept for them is the category of the inner and acknowledged importance of consideration based on basic categories of thinking about the world. The Leibnizian prospect allows for a broader look at Wittgenstein’s analysis of the relation between propositions and facts, between language and the world. Using the Hanoverian philosopher’s terminology allows for the demonstration of the ambivalence of the concept of logical form in the philosophy of Wittgenstein and also the metaphysical nature of his first book.

The aim of the present investigation is to sketch a new approach to analysing normativity. First (§1–2) I locate the problem of normativity in the landscape of contemporary philosophy and focus on the dispute between naturalism and antinaturalism. Then (§3) I discuss the so-called top-down approach to studying normativity, to which I oppose the bottom-up approach inspired by contemporary philosophy of science (§4). I see the integration of these approaches as enabling investigations of normative phenomena that do not reduce them to just one type of normativity (e.g. morality).
Celem niniejszych rozważań jest zarysowanie nowego podejścia w analizowaniu, czym jest normatywność. Po pierwsze (§1–2) wskazuję na miejsce problemu normatywności we współczesnej filozofii, koncentrując się sporze pomiędzy naturalizmem i antynaturalizmem. Następnie (§3) omawiam tzw. odgórną drogę w badaniu normatywności, którą przeciwstawiam inspirowanej przez współczesną filozofię nauki, drodze oddolnej (§4). W integracji podejścia odgórnego i oddolnego upatruję możliwość takiego badania zjawisk normatywnych, które nie będzie ich redukowało do jednego z rodzajów normatywności (np. moralności).

The article discusses Joshua Knobe’s problem of asymmetry in ascribing intentionality to actions. Knobe claims that, in a way, the asymmetry is related to the human tendency for blaming the agent for negative side effects of her actions rather than praising her for the positive ones. He believes that people are more likely to link intentional actions to side effects when they consider a side effect to be bad than when they regard it as good. The aim of the article is to discuss the problem put forward by Knobe. I try to demonstrate that the asymmetry he identified is founded in a more basic asymmetry between what is normative and what is empirical. In my view, by referring to the concept of recognizing normativity suggested in the article, we can look at the problem raised by Knobe from a totally new perspective. I formulate a research hypothesis whereby knowledge about normative relations is more primary and basic than knowledge about agency and self-knowledge of the subject.

The dispute over the continuity of life and mind. Arguments for cognitivism: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the position of non-cognitivism on the issue of the so-called dispute over the continuity / discontinuity of life and mind. In discussing the views of Michael Kirchhoff and Tom Froese, I will point out some difficulties related to their position. Next, I will formulate three arguments in favor of the cognitive alternative, emphasizing the need to resort to semantic information in explaining these phenomena. According to noncognitivist position, there is a continuity in the life-mind line, which can be justified by referring to the concept of Shannon’s syntactic information. Opponents of this thesis, i.e. supporters of cognitivism, claim that the explanation of cognition requires the use of other tools than those used to explanation of life, because, first, the notion of syntactic information does not exhaust the complexity of these phenomena, and, second, the non-cognitive position raises many problems and ambiguities. According to cognitivists, when explaining life and mind, one should refer to the concept of semantic information that is rejected by noncognitivists. In the Conclusion I will analyze the ambiguities and assumptions related to the thesis about the continuity or discontinuity between life and cognitive processes.

The article describes the problems of Polish military forces in the context of a relatively new type of threat, commonly described as “hybrid warfare”. The first step of the analysis is a description of such threat, based on data gathered by Polish and foreign analytical centers. The next step is a presentation of the current state of Polish military forces – in terms of doctrine, organization, training and materiel (e.g. equipment). This kind of data analysis offers relevant information about defense capabilities that the Polish Armed Forces have and those which they lack. These capabilities are then compared to the challenges posed by hybrid warfare, thus providing insights on potential new capabilities which should be acquired as well as those which are unnecessary in the context of hybrid war.
