Opis:
The article explores combat related Private Military Companies (PMCs) that are authorised to engage in the forefront of the battlefield as dedicated force multipliers. To supplement empirical data with qualitative observation, the methodology applies the case study and observation method. Considering assistance in conflict termination as a dependent variable, the methodology evaluates the case study of Executive Outcomes in Sierra Leone and, to impose a framework for observation, deconstructs that case with seven independent variables: competence, effectiveness, flexibility, field cooperation with conventional forces, cost efficiency, impact on military and the state-to-PMC balance. The methodology indicates what factors were prevalent in effective conflict management and what indicators entailed chal- lenges. The results advocate for the competence, flexibility, effectiveness and cooperation with armed forces to be deemed conclusive in positive PMC engagement, whereas the cost efficiency, impact on conventional military and the state-to-PMC balance require improvement. Since governments have continued to be hesitant (justified either by financial, geopolitical or social incen- tives) towards overseas military operations where asymmetric warfare is taking place, PMCs stepped in to fill the se- curity void. Therefore, this paper argues that PMCs are here to stay; however, the literature hasn’t rigorously ex- plored the subject matter to determine whether indicators of success and failure exist to evaluate the PMC outcome. This paper also precipitates natural outgrowth in the scholarship by composing the benchmark that synthesises relevant data.

Trainings as well as their impact on employability and employees’ performance have been the subject of interest of theoreticians and practitioners of management for a long time. However, according to the literature study, the outcomes of employees’ trainings also depend on the applied style of leadership as well as on the quality of relationships between supervisors and subordinates. This paper tries to answer the question: what are the relationships between transformational leadership, the quality of supervisors’ relationships with subordinates, employees’ trainings and employability, employees’ quality and effort of work in public organizations? This aim will be achieved by presenting the results of literature study and empirical research carried out in public organizations.

Nowadays, trust is perceived as one of the key factors that can build an organization’s competitive advantage, increase the efficiency of its functioning and ability to develop. It can be expected that shaping trust in an organisation will lead to improvements in various aspects of its functioning, especially effectiveness. This issue has not yet been the object of comprehensive scientific research. Hence, this study tackles the issue of the impact of trust on an organization’s outcomes. At the same time, two basic categories of trust are distinguished: global (attitudinal/affective) trust (regarding the belief that people in general are trustworthy) and specific (situational/cognitive) trust (modified by an individual’s experience). In the latter category, we may distinguish between vertical trust (concerning superiorsubordinate relations) and lateral trust (concerning relations between co-workers). The relation between the level of trust and organizational outcomes is examined for each of these categories of trust. The research covers organisations functioning in Poland and is based on a questionnaire.

Objectives The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of phthalate exposure on pregnancy duration and birth outcomes based on the Polish Mother and Child Cohort (REPRO_PL). Material and Methods Phthalate exposure was determined by measuring 11 phthalate metabolites (mono-ethyl phthalate (MEP), mono-iso-butyl phthalate (MiBP), mono-n-butyl phthalate (MnBP), 3OH-mono-n-butyl phthalate (OH-MnBP), mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP), mono‑ (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHHP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP), mono-hydroxy-iso-nonyl phthalate (MHiNP), mono-oxo-iso-nonyl phthalate (MOiNP), and mono-n-octyl phthalate (MOP)) in the urine collected from 165 mothers during the third trimester of pregnancy by high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The following measures at birth were considered: gestational age, birth weight, length as well as head and chest circumference. Results Pregnancy duration was inversely associated with natural log concentrations (μg/g creatinine) of MEP (standardized regression coefficient (β) = –0.2, p = 0.04) after adjustment for a variety of confounders. Significant impact of MOiNP on head circumference (β = –0.1, p = 0.05) was also observed. Conclusions The study findings add further support to the hypothesis that phthalate exposure may be associated with shorter pregnancy duration and a decreased head circumference, and underscore importance of public health interventions to reduce that exposure.

Introduction and objective. This study aimed to determine the environmental conditions for the occurrence of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in a non-industrial area, and patient-reported outcomes after surgical release. Materials and method. This observational study utilized convenience sampling to screen 100 consecutive patients for carpal tunnel syndrome at the Orthopedic Clinic, using two questionnaires. Data were collected from the Disability of Arm Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire, and the PROMIS® (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System) Upper Extremity and PROMIS® SF 3a questionnaire (Pain Intensity). The relationship of various repetitive musculoskeletal disorders to CTS was validated by questionnaire scores, PROMIS® T-score, and correlation coefficients. Results. Finally, CTS was confirmed by electromyography in 69 patients (55 females and 14 males; average age: 47.5 years). Aging significantly influenced the occurrence of symptoms associated with pain (neck, thoracic, lower back, shoulder, and CTS (p<0.001)). Those employed for longer more frequently declared performing exercises to prevent overload pain (p<0.001). DASH results significantly correlated with the PROMIS Upper Extremity score (r = -0.64; p<0.05). Conclusions. Geographical and environmental conditions indicate that even though working with a computer is described as an essential risk factor for CTS, the study group showed a predominance of elements that were unrelated to working at a computer. CTS also occurred among people working physically, and even among unemployed individuals. The existence of a statistically significant, strong, negative correlation (r=-0.64; p < 0.05) between the results obtained in the questionnaires DASH and PROMIS Upper Extremity has been demonstrated.

The paper presents the method of assessment of learning outcomes acquirement by students. The analysis is based on the results of the final matriculation exam in mathematics. For crisp and both types of fuzzy relations, cut scores (passing scores) can be defined along with the method of preparing rankings of students. The advantage of applying type 2 fuzzy relations is the lack of the necessity for experts to agree to one level (one number) of verification of learning outcomes by items created for the examination. Based on the results of the exam and experts’ knowledge, the decision support system for calculating the levels of learning outcomes acquirement, making decisions about passing the examination and preparing rankings of students, can be developed. Additionally, the rank reversal phenomenon does not burden the proposed method.

Since the financial crunch swept Europe in late 2008, Germany has opposed a coordinated EU campaign to aid the endangered states, claiming that each case should undergo a separate analysis. It was only the collapse of public finances in Greece and the financial problems of Ireland and Portugal that made Germany agree with France that it was necessary to establish special EU financial mechanisms in order to prevent the financial crises of EU member states; Germany also agreed that an ‘economic government’of Eurozone states be created. Germany realizes very well that healing the Euro and the European economy is in its interest. Germany takes the greatest advantage of the single internal market as it sells the lion’s share of its vast industrial output without restriction there. Germany fears that abandoning the idea of the free flow of goods and capital may result in the emergence of new customs barriers and increased commercial protectionism. Finally, the collapse of the Eurozone might mean the end of the ‘project Europe’Germany has contributed so much effort and money to.

Bologna process presents us with a challenge: how to ensure both the comparability of learning outcomes and preserve the diversity of education in an integrated Europe? The National Qualifications Framework (NQF) is going to be a tool for dealing with this task. Qualification is defined as a title, degree, etc., identified with the corresponding diploma, certificate or other document, issued after a certain stage of education, certifying that one obtained the intended learning outcomes. It is determining learning outcomes which should be the starting point for the organization of the educational process. Transition of European higher education system to education based on outcomes (outcome-based approach – OBA) is a fact. Still, the idea of OBA presents some doubts. For example, will not focusing on getting results kill ‘academic’ aspect of education, responsible for broadening horizons? Will not it (the transition process) transform an academy into something resembling higher vocational school?

Upon operation, the cysts were successfully excised, sparing almost the whole spleen, using standard instruments: electric knife and LigaSure instrument. The postoperative course was uneventful in all cases. At the 4–6-months follow-up, all patients were in good shape and CT showed no signs of recurrence. The results of this case series show that giant splenic cysts may be relatively safely resected, sparing almost the whole spleen.

In order to respond to all the fast changes that are happening, it is necessary to act quickly and to be adaptable, both from the point of view of organizations and individuals, having necessary knowledge and skill and continually developing human potentials. The year 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic has shown how those changes can happen overnight and create a need for the companies’ transformation. That is the new clear reason for the big interest in researching start-ups. Start ups are innovative and fast-developing companies, bringing new solutions and new products, and working under extreme uncertainty, therefore, they require specific skills, knowledge, and other competencies of their founders. Competencies, on the other side, are predispositions, knowledge and skills needed to respond and adapt to changes. The aim of the paper is to propose a theoretical model of relationships between start-up founders’ competence potential and outcomes of their ventures. The theoretical model is based on the Upper Echelons Theory presented by Hambrick and Mason (1984) and the scale measuring competence potential of employees in innovative enterprises proposed by Rakowska and Sitko-Lutek (2015). Competence potential of start-up founders is still not researched in depth, so the proposed theoretical method could be used as the practical research methodology.

It seeks to shed more light on the experiencing of fi nancial concerns in adolescents who face the challenge of the foreign language learning process in the context of formal education. The participants of the empirical research were 609 students from 23 randomly selected classes of the six secondary grammar schools in Opole, southwest Poland. The results prove that financial strain and worries are negatively related to achievement in the field of foreign language learning. However, the social nature of language learning, as well as the students’ personality profi les, attachment patterns or perception of social support in adolescence also play a role.

An ancient but quite topical even today Latin sentence says: “It is better prevent the disease than to cure it”. In a global society as today it is, the prevention of chronic diseases is of great social importance, as well as it is important in the economic point of view, since preventing chronic kidney disease, chronic renal Insufficiency, which have a great dispersion among the Albanian population and high cost of its ongoing cure, it does not only improves significantly the quality of life of these patients, but also reduces to minimum health budget expenditures that are very significant for this category of sick. Speaking of chronic diseases affecting the human organism all over the life, the chronic kidney diseases share their own part, having also a significant importance into the group of human pathologies as a whole. Prevention and cure of chronic kidney diseases ( C. K. D.) is undoubtedly an important problem and mission of nephrology, nowadays, because as the old medicine postulate predicts – it is easier to prevent the disease than to cure it. Prevention and correct cure of primary nephropathies, secondary nephropathies and cardiovascular complications, the last ones considered as a tierce cause of nephropathies, it is obviously a target of the contemporary medicine, aiming at both the utmost reduction of renal morbidity and the budget cost of cure and treatment e.g. patients under substitute therapy, dialysis and transplant.

Opis:
For decades, critics of higher education have been asserting that competencies students can demonstrate upon course completion are much better predictors of what students know and can do than time spent in courses or grades. However, assessment of student learning has not been adopted by faculty and their leaders, and the effort is normally addressed as a bureaucratic demand. The objective was to identify topics that could help shape the discourse regarding the assessment of student learning. The study revealed that the universities in Poland are ready to ensure graduating students competencies demanded by the contemporary world.

Opis:
The paper refers to the history of migration movements but considers also some characteristics of contemporary conditionings of this phenomenon. It was indicated that job migration is a good source of supplementing deficiencies of capital faced by rural communities and frequently are also naturally lead to undertaking off-farm economic activities, upgrading education and moving to other areas of economy, particularly in less favoured areas, to which submontane and mountain areas are classified. The empirical part of the work presents the results of survey studies conducted in the suski county. A majority of the surveyed persons positively assessed their stay abroad because they gained both economic and personal satisfaction. Negative consequences of migration were assessed in the first place with reference to the macroeconomic scale . in the sense of depleting our country's human capital and taxes. The article also discussed a theory of migration networks as the main agent increasing the scale of job trips of the inhabitants of submontane areas.

Opis:
Welfare reforms are carried out by government to solve problems of citizens and to improve their quality of life. However, social interventions also generate various consequences, that are unintended and unanticipated. The aim of the article is to investigate and to systemize such controversial and paradoxical outcomes. Basing on the historical facts, they were divided into three groups: (1) expanding the problem that was to be solved (2) expanding the opposite problem to the solved one, (3) expanding other problem. These outcomes are arguments against welfare programs, that were formulated already by classical researchers (T.R. Malthus, G. Bentham, D. Ricardo, H. Spencer), and currently are being maintained and developed by modern scholars. They focus mainly on: moral hazard, freeriding, incentive traps, and crowding-out individual engagement.
