Szkicując tło aspiracji muzycznych symbolizmu, wyrażonych m.in. przez Verlaine’a czy Valéry’ego, artykuł omawia poglądy estetyczne Stéphane’a Mallarmégo, który upatrywał w muzyce środek do stworzenia idealnego dzieła poetyckiego. Według mistrza symbolistów ideał muzyczności zasadzał się na słowie, a jego punktem dojścia miała być muzyka ciszy i tekst-partytura. Analiza kilku utworów poetyckich oraz poematów prozą Mallarmégo pokazuje funkcję instrumentu w procesie uduchawiania poezji. Muzyka jako metafora zanikania i nieobecności pozwala tworzyć poezję czystą, opartą na doświadczeniu intelektualnym. Prymat języka poetyckiego nad dźwiękiem wyraża się w symbolicznej muzyce słów, którą ilustruje postać świętej Cecylii („Święta”), a której zdaje się zaprzeczać idea dramatu muzycznego w ujęciu Wagnera.

This article analyses poetic visions, based on synesthesia and referring to Swedenborg’s correspondence theory, evoked by listening to music. In these visions the musical impressions are in some way sanctified and they contribute to the development of the spiritual area. This aesthetic phenomenon is noticeable in Balzac’s novels. The music for him is the light penetrating the listener’s soul and a means of accessing divine mysteries. Similarly, in George Sand’s works music is the inspiration to create soulful poetic visions and the character of Consuelo who, by her singing, is vouchsafed by divine revelations.

This article analyses the essence and roles of silence in the œuvres of Mallarmé and Valéry. The Mallarmé’s musicality gradually gives way to the silent music of words; poetry is becoming spatial and takes the form of the music score. In the poem Coup de dés it gets up to the incarnation of silence which shows the ideal of the Mallarmé’s musicality; the ideal in which an eye serves to listen. The theme of music and silence reappears in the Valery’s œuvre. In spite of the connection between music and architecture, which can incarnate silence, poetry uses the subjectivism of music and the ambiguity of silence to achieve the ideal of pure art which is hidden in the artist’s interior. Silence as nothingness is the starting point for poetry whereas non-incarnated silence can express the mystical sense of poetry

This article analyses a polysemous term of vanity in Mallarmé ’s idea and œuvre. This concept shows paradoxes of Mallarmé ’s creation: a misunderstood poet accused of being vain who was torn between the dream of glory and the self-devalu-ation. It was in the autoreflexive art par excellence, where Mallarmé saw his satisfac-tion and found the sense of life. After the experience of spiritual crisis and the discov-ery of worthlessness of language, Mallarmé, finding in the Nothingness the resources of poetry, decided to extend the illusion of literature. “Digging into the line”, he built the poetics of vanity which is a synonym of futility or void where the sense of word is replaced by the language sonority. What is more, while fighting against the poetic impotence, Mallarmé, due to writing about Vanitas, immersed into death to create an “ideal tomb” for his late son.
L ’article analyse la notion polysémique de vanité dans la pensée et dans l ’œuvre de Mallarmé. Le concept dévoile les paradoxes de la création mallarméenne : le poète jugé obscur et accusé de vanité, était déchiré entre le rêve de gloire et l ’autodé-valorisation. C ’est dans l ’Art auto-réflexif par excellence qu ’il projetait sa satisfaction d ’artiste et trouvait un sens de la vie. Mais ayant vécu une crise spirituelle et décou-vert la vanité du langage, Mallarmé a choisi de prolonger une illusion de la littérature en trouvant dans le Néant les ressources de sa poésie. À force de « creuser le vers », il construit donc une poétique de la vanité qui reste synonyme d ’inanité ou de vide où le sens des mots est relayé par la sonorité du langage. En plus, tout en luttant contre la stérilité poétique, à travers l ’écriture des Vanités, Mallarmé s ’immerge dans la mort afin de créer un « tombeau idéal » pour son fils disparu.

L’article présente la genèse et les caractéristiques du mépris, ce sentiment et attitude complétés de dédain, qui constitue l’une des notions clés dans l’esthétique de Villiers de l’Isle-Adam. Le mépris, mis à l’aide de l’ironie au double service du « rêveur et railleur » en quête de la gloire, reste particulièrement protéiforme et révélateur de la philosophie villiérienne. À côté du mépris idéologique visant les valeurs matérialistes de la société bourgeoise qui détruit l’idéal, l’ œuvre de Villiers fait voir le mépris scientifique dirigé contre l’idée du progrès, et le mépris journalistique, inspiré par les expériences de l’écrivain condamné à l’échec. Au niveau psychologique, le dédain peut être feint et le mépris présupposé, mais aussi inhérent à l’amour, ce qui conduit à un acte d’auto-dévalorisation. L’article analyse la lutte entre ces deux passions qui se déroule au moyen du langage et des gestes.
This article presents the origins and characteristics of contempt in the Villiers de l’Isle-Adam’s work. This feeling, complemented by disdain, is one of the key-terms in the aesthetics of this writer in search of glory. He used it as a dreamer and a scoffer as well; this term takes different forms and reveals Villiers’ philosophy. Next to the ideological contempt aimed at the materialistic values of bourgeois society which destroy the ideal, the Villiers’ œuvre also shows the scientific contempt aimed at the idea of progress and the journalistic contempt which has its origin in his experience of a writer who is doomed to failure. On the psychological level, the contempt can be pretended or assumed but it can also coexist with love, which leads to self-depreciation. This article analyses the struggle between two passions which proceeds by words and gestures.

This article analyses the disorder in functioning of will by the example of characters from a few texts of French symbolism. On the basis of experimental psychology research described in Les Maladies de la volonté of Th. Ribot, there are discussed the example of people which unfulfilled or obsessive desires point to weakening of will due to the lack or excess of impulse. So next to the characters of aboulic individuals created by T. de Wyzewa i J. de Tinan, in the texts of Villiers de L’Isle-Adam and M. Schwob we can see people pursuing at any cost the achievement of power, or the confirmation of oneself uniqueness.
Artykuł analizuje zaburzenia funkcjonowania woli na przykładzie postaci obecnych w kilku tekstach francuskiego symbolizmu. W oparciu o badania z zakresu psychologii eksperymentalnej opisane w dziele Th. Ribota Les Maladies de la volonté omówiono przypadki osób, których niespełnione lub obsesyjne pragnienia wskazują na osłabienie woli przez brak lub nadmiar impulsu. I tak obok postaci abulików stworzonych przez T. de Wyzewa i J. de Tinan, w tekstach Villiers de L’Isle-Adama i M. Schwoba pojawiają się ludzie dążący za wszelką ceną do osiągnięcia woli mocy, czyli potwierdzenia własnej wyjątkowości.

The paper analyzes Teodor de Wyzewa’s critical writings (collected in Nos Maîtres) and literary texts, paying special attention to his attitude to those whom he considered his masters. The evolution of Wyzewa’s ideas shows that this adept at Wagnerism gradually distanced himself from those who had influenced him, replacing the intellectual approach to art and blind faith in science, regarded as worthless, by an aesthetic and ethical ideal. In the novel Valbert ou les Récits d’un jeune homme, Wyzewa describes a move away from alienating idealism towards a spontaneous attitude to life. His new interpretation of biblical parables abandons Schopenhauer’s philosophy in favour of the Tolstoyan movement (Contes chrétiens). The search for moral values is connected with a break with Symbolist thought for the benefit of a religion of love and beauty. Formulating his own teaching, Wyzewa surpassed the authority of his masters, without, however, diminishing their significance for his generation.
L’article analyse les écrits critiques (réunis dans Nos Maîtres) et les textes littéraires de Teodor de Wyzewa, en fonction de son attitude à l’égard de ceux qu’il considérait comme ses maîtres. L’évolution de la pensée de Wyzewa démontre que cet adepte du wagnérisme s’est progressivement éloigné de ceux qui l’ont influencé, en remplaçant une approche intellectuelle de l’art et la foi aveugle dans la science, jugée vaine, par un idéal à la fois esthétique et éthique. Dans le roman Valbert ou les Récits d’un jeune homme Wyzewa décrit un détachement de l’idéalisme aliénant au profit d’une attitude spontanée face à la vie. Sa relecture des paraboles bibliques met en question la philosophie schopenhauerienne au profit du tolstoïsme (Contes chrétiens). La quête des valeurs morales entraîne une rupture avec la pensée symboliste en faveur d’une religion de l’amour et de la beauté. En formulant son propre enseignement Wyzewa a donc dépassé l’autorité de ses maîtres, sans pourtant amoindrir leur importance pour toute sa génération.

This article analyses the narrative and formal measures which Villiers de l’Isle-Adam used in his texts to distort the message of a literary work, thereby leaving the reader uncertain of the œuvre’s final sense. Villiers developed the peculiar esthetics of reversion, which is not only based on the transformation of well-known motives and the merciless destruction of the traditional value system, but also exists on the level of paratext and language itself. Providing texts with a dedication and a motto or a seemingly nonessential sentence in the end allows Villiers to transform the nascent sense and makes it ambiguous. By these measures, the writer makes so-called “unbelievable parables,” the sense of which is formed and deformed, and as a result must evade the reader. The language of characters and moments of silence, which are opposed to logorrhea connected with laughter, play a very important role in this process. Therefore, this article shows the ways which are used to veil or even hide the true intentions of the author.

This article shows two opposite reactions to the revolutionary events of 1848‐1849. For George Sand June Days meant the end of dreams of the social revolution whereas for Richard Wagner, who was a participant of the Dresden Revolution of 1849, they became the direct inspiration to outline the utopian project of the art revolution. The rejection of the idea of revolution inclines George Sand to the concept of evolution which would lead to the social republic in the future. Richard Wagner, by contrast, in his essay ‘Art and Revolution’ supports the idea of the revolution based on art. This turnaround, which in fact is evolutionary, shall lead to the political and esthetic development as well as to the inception of the ‘artistic humanity’.
