Opis:
Nodular cast irons are used in a wide range of industrial applications, especially in the automotive industry. SiMo-type of nodular cast iron is suitable for high-temperature applications, for example the exhaust manifolds of the combustion engines; SiCu-type of nodular cast iron is used in various components of tribotechnical units. These automotive components often work in a corrosive environment. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to compare the corrosion resistance of two types of the nodular cast irons (SiMo-type and SiCu-type). Corrosion resistance was determined by the exposure immersion test at ambient temperature. Specimens of both types of nodular cast iron were immersed in 3.5 % NaCl solution (to simulate sea water) and gradually removed from the solution after 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks. Subsequently, the weight loss (g) and the average corrosion rate (g m-2 day-1) were calculated. Experimental results show that nodular cast iron alloyed by Si and Mo has higher corrosion resistance than the nodular cast iron alloyed with Si and Cu. Moreover, the mechanical properties (evaluated by tensile test, impact bending test and hardness test) and fatigue properties of both types of nodular cast iron has been compared in the paper.

Opis:
The paper describes the process of stress corrosion in a Ø50 mm rod made of AISI 304L austenitic chromium-nickel steel. Discs cut off from the steel rod were moved at a speed of 1.25 m/s for a test period of 408 h in a corrosive environment of aqueous solution containing 3% HCl and 8.6 g NaCl at room temperature. It was found that deepest cracks and irregular pitting occurred locally in areas of microstructure containing grains of hard lamellar &alpha' martensite and along boundaries between filamentary delta ferrite (Feδ) precipitates and &alpha′ phase. The corrosion developed in a trans-crystalline manner with branches propagating along boundaries of lamellar &alpha′ phase grains.

It was found that irradiation of a water solution of NaCl with the diffractometer DRON3-M (Russian device) had a large influence on two-step processes of crystallization. The irradiation in the first stage of crystallization of the solution produces metastable radicals of water and excited seeds, which stimulate a very fast crystallization after switching off irradiation. After the crystals reach a sufficient size, the crystal growth can be explained by creation of vacancy-interstitial pairs in the growing crystal due to irradiation. The increase of linear dimensions of the growing irradiated crystals is proportional to the square root √t of crystallization time because most important place in crystallization takes the ions diffusion by irradiated vacancies.

Opis:
A problem is defined to investigate the effect of titanium traces on the corrosion behaviour of low carbon steel. In theory titanium effects surface properties like abrasion resistance in medium carbon steels and corrosion resistance in low as well as medium carbon steels. The present research as indicated by the topic is aimed to experimentally mark the effect of titanium traces on corrosion resistance in the available low carbon steel specimens. The effect of microalloying with titanium (i.e.0.02wt.%) on the corrosion behavior of low carbon steel in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was studied by electrochemical, SEM, and Raman spectroscopy techniques. The electrochemical results showed that the corrosion of the Ti-bearing steel improved by around 30% compared with the Ti-free steel. The titanium microalloying led to the formation of a more compact corrosion product layer on the metal surface. The SEM analysis showed that the Ti-bearing sample had a smoother surface compared with the Ti-free steel.

Opis:
Purpose: The results presented the microstructure and corrosive behavior of SnSb12Cu6Pb alloy (B82) in H2SO4 aqueous solution and NaCl aqueous solution. Design/methodology/approach: The electrochemical corrosion has been investigated in two different aqueous solutions: 0.1M sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and 0.5M sodium chloride (NaCl) solution measuring of potential changes relative to immersion time and conducting mass loss test. Microscopic investigations before and after corrosion tests were made using scanning electron microscopy. Findings: The obtained results indicate very good corrosion resistance of the alloy tested in NaCl solution. Corrosion progresses faster in a sulfuric acid aqueous solution compared to sodium chloride aqueous solution. Also, it was found that the dominant mechanism of corrosion degradation in both solutions is selective corrosion which is a particularly undesirable type of corrosion because it involves the loss of one alloying component and the formation of porous structure on the alloy surface. Research limitations/implications: The aqueous solutions used in this study are not a natural working environment of the bearing. However, a comparison of acidic and neutral solutions allows explaining the corrosion behavior of tin babbitts due to contaminants of oil lubricants. Further research should be conducted in more aggressive environments characteristic of industrial conditions. Practical implications: One of the important properties of bearing alloys are corrosion resistance. Corrosion properties are extremely important for the transport and storage of metallic components before they are used. Also, the working environment can have a destructive effect on the properties of the materials used. Industry environment, aging stagnant oil, and some acids may lead to selective corrosion of the tin, copper, lead, or antimony components and leaving a rough and weakened the babbitt surface. Electrochemical corrosion can contribute to the acceleration of bearing wear and consequent to bearing damage. Originality/value: Studies of the corrosion of tin-babbitt bearings are not extensive in the literature due to rare tin corrosion. This study could be an important complement to knowledge about the corrosion behavior of tin-based bearing alloys.

Zbadano wpływ warstw ditlenku tytanu TiO 2 otrzymywanych metodą zol-żel na właściwości korozyjne biomedycznego stopu M30NW. Próbki z naniesionymi warstwami TiO 2 były wygrzewane w czterech temperaturach 200, 400, 600 i 800°C. Badania korozyjne z wykorzystaniem metod elektrochemicznych przeprowadzono w odtlenionym roztworze soli fizjologicznej (0,9% NaCl) w temperaturze 37°C. Uzyskane wyniki badań wskazują, że najlepszą odporność korozyjną wykazują próbki stopu modyfikowane warstwą TiO 2 w temperaturze 400°C, podczas gdy stosowanie wyższych temperatur (600 i 800°C) powoduje osłabienie odporności korozyjnej stopu.
The effect of titanium dioxide TiO 2 layers obtained by sol-gel method on the corrosion properties of M30NW biomedical alloy was investigated. The samples of alloy with TiO 2 sol-gel layers were annealed at temperatures of 200, 400, 600 and 800 o C. Corrosion measurements using electrochemical methods were carried out in deoxygenated physiological saline solution (0.9% NaCl) at temperature of 37 o C. These investigations were performed for freshly prepared samples and samples subjected to 30-day exposure in saline solution. The results of corrosion research were compared with the corresponding results obtained for samples of the alloy without surface modification. It was found that the influence of TiO 2 sol-gel layers on the corrosion properties of M30NW biomedical alloy depends on the annealing temperature of these layers. Obtained results indicate that the best corrosion resistance is shown by the samples of alloy modified by TiO 2 layer at temperature of 400°C, while the use of higher annealing temperatures (600 and 800°C) causes decreasing of corrosion resistance of alloy.
