We performed statistical analysis on data from the Digg.com website, which enables its users to express their opinion on news stories by taking part in forum-like discussions as well as to directly evaluate previous posts and stories by assigning so called "diggs". Owing to fact that the content of each post has been annotated with its emotional value, apart from the strictly structural properties, the study also includes an analysis of the average emotional response of the comments about the main story. While analysing correlations at the story level, an interesting relationship between the number of diggs and the number of comments that a story received was found. The correlation between the two quantities is high for data where small threads dominate and consistently decreases for longer threads. However, while the correlation of the number of diggs and the average emotional response tends to grow for longer threads, correlations between numbers of comments and the average emotional response are almost zero. We also suggest presence of two different mechanisms governing the evolution of the discussion and, consequently, its length.

Phonon-phonon interactions were investigated in various nanocrystalline powders like anatase $TiO_{2-δ}$, pure $CeO_{2-δ}$ and ceria doped with Nd(Gd) analyzing temperature dependent Raman spectra of these systems. Phonon confinement model based on size, inhomogeneous strain and anharmonic effects was used to properly describe the evident changes present in the Raman spectra of pure and doped ceria nanocrystalline samples. In small particles of pure and doped ceria nanocrystals, when size effects have minor impact on Raman modes, four phonon anharmonic processes prevail under the three-phonon ones. When nanopowdered particles are grown enough size effects provoke changes of the anharmonic interactions when three-phonon coupling prevails over the four-phonon anharmonic processes. In nanocrystalline anatase $TiO_2$ evident blueshift of the most prominent $E_g$ Raman mode probably originates from dominant four-phonon anharmonic interactions.

Opis:
The simulation of the Raman spectra of nanostructured materials, where the effects of frequency shift and asymmetric broadening of the Raman modes play an important role, can be very useful in systematic characterization of these materials. Use of phonon confinement model for calculating Raman spectra of different nanomaterials is considered both from the viewpoint of different confinement function and the confinement strength, as well as the dimensionality of the confinement model. The phonon dispersion relations and the choice of their approximation are also studied. The influence of particle size distribution on the shape of the calculated spectra is discussed and contributions of Gaussian and asymmetric Gaussian distribution are compared. The effects of average and inhomogeneous strain on the behavior of simulated Raman spectra are also discussed. The results of the phonon confinement model are compared to the experimental spectra of $CeO_2$ and anatase $TiO_2$ nanopowders.

Nanosized titania $(TiO_{2})$ is synthesized by laser-induced pyrolysis using $TiCl_{4}$ as a liquid precursor. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering confirmed anatase structure of $TiO_{2}$ nanocrystals. The dielectric function ε(ω) of $TiO_{2}$ nanopowders has been determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the energy range from 1.5 to 6 eV at room temperature. The features observed in ε(ω) have been fitted to analytical line shapes by using the second derivatives of experimental spectra. The energies corresponding to different interband electronic transitions have been determined. Photoluminescence measurements have been carried out in vacuum for T = 20 K and T = 300 K. Under laser irradiation with sub-band gap photon energy, anatase nanocrystals have displayed strong visible photoluminescence emission. In this broad photoluminescence band different variations of line shape and position with excitation energy and temperature are observed for nanopowders with different crystallite size, pointing out to the various electronic transitions mediated by defect levels within the band gap.

The paper reviews recent work in the area of high-k dielectrics for application as the gate oxide in advanced MOSFETs. Following a review of relevant dielectric physics, we discuss challenges and issues relating to characterization of the dielectrics, which are compounded by electron trapping phenomena in the microsecond regime. Nearly all practical methods of preparation result in a thin interfacial layer generally of the form SiOx or a mixed oxide between Si and the high-k so that the extraction of the dielectric constant is complicated and values must be qualified by error analysis. The discussion is initially focussed on HfO2 but recognizing the propensity for crystallization of that material at modest temperatures, we discuss and review also, hafnia silicates and aluminates which have the potential for integration into a full CMOS process. The paper is concluded with a perspective on material contenders for the "end of road map" at the 22 nm node.

Opis:
This paper shows the process of braking force realization by air brakes with brake shoes accompanied by a suitable mechanical model. The complexity of adhesion nature as a physical phenomenon as well as the limited factors on which the braking force value depends are pointed out. According to this, the model of braking force realization based on the fuzzy set theory is explained. The procedure of fuzzy controller projecting with a task to regulate the value of kidding and by that the value of braking torque through the air pressure in the braking cylinder by maximizing the braking force that can be realized according to adhesion conditions is described. The testing of the optimization model under concrete adhesion conditions of the wheels on the rails is done at the end of the paper.
W artykule opisano proces generowania siły hamującej w pneumatycznych hamulcach szczękowych za pomocą odpowiedniego modelu mechanicznego. Szczególny nacisk położono na złożoność natury adhezji jako zjawiska fizycznego oraz ograniczoność czynników, od których zależy wartość siły hamującej. W tym kontekście zbudowano model oparty na logice rozmytej jako teoretyczne narzędzie do określania siły hamowania. Opisano procedurę projektowania sterownika rozmytego, którego zadaniem jest kontrola wartości poślizgu poprzez dobór momentu hamującego wynikającego z ciśnienia w zbiorniku układu pneumatycznego oraz aktualnych warunków adhezji. Na zakończenie przeprowadzono test modelu optymalizującego siłę hamowania dla konkretnych warunków adhezji pomiędzy szyną, a kołem poruszającego się po niej pojazdu.

Barium titanate, $BaTiO_3$ ceramic powders were prepared by mechanochemical synthesis and by the Pechini method. A powder mixture of BaO and $TiO_2$ was treated in a planetary ball mill in an air atmosphere for up to 1 h, using zirconium oxide vial and zirconium oxide balls as the milling medium. After 60 min $BaTiO_3$ phase was formed. In both ways $BaTiO_3$ ceramics were sintered after 2 h on 1300°C without pre-calcinations step. The heating rate was 10°C $\text{min}^{-1}$. The formation of phase and crystal structure of $BaTiO_3$ was approved by X-ray diffraction analysis and the Raman spectroscopy. The morphology and microstructure of obtained powders were examined by scanning electron microscopy method. Sharp phase transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric state was observed. The hysteresis loop is very well performed with regular sharp characteristic of ferroelectric materials.

In this paper we illustrate the change of optical properties of mechanically activated wurtzite ZnO powder and laser synthesized anatase TiO$\text{}_{2}$ nanopowder due to the nonstoichiometry caused by mechanical activation and/or laser irradiation in vacuum. Both of the investigated materials are widely used in optoelectronics and the examination of their optical properties under different preparation and environmental conditions is of great practical interest.

We have measured the Raman scattering and magnetization of pure and $Fe^{2+}(Fe^{3+})$ doped $CeO_2$ nanopowders at room temperature. The Raman scattering spectra revealed the existence of $CeO_2$ fluorite cubic structure for all investigated samples. The Raman active mode at about 600 $cm^{-1}$, seen in all samples, can be ascribed to the $CeO_2$ intrinsic oxygen vacancies. Additional Raman modes at 720 $cm^{-1}$, 1320 $cm^{-1}$ and 1600 $cm^{-1}$, which appear in the spectra of doped samples, can be assigned to maghemite $(γ-Fe_2O_3)$ cation deficient structure, to $2ω_{LO}$ IR-allowed overtone and two magnon structure, respectively. This implies that our powders are composed of mixed valence states and have defective structure. Presence of oxygen defect states and magnetic ions can be responsible for the observed ferromagnetism at room temperature in both pure and Fe doped samples.

Pure and 10 mol% $Fe^{3+}$ doped $CeO_2$ nanocrystals were synthesized by hydrothermal method using two different basic solutions ($NH_4OH$ and NaOH). All the samples were calcinated at 140°C and 200°C. The characterization of crystalline structure, vibrational and optical properties was performed using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The obtained results showed that the Fe-doped samples are solid solutions with different size of nanocrystals, very dependent on the synthesis temperature and type of basic solution. The Raman measurements demonstrated electron molecular vibrational coupling and increase of oxygen vacancy concentration whereas doping provokes a small decrease of optical absorption edge in comparison with pure ceria.

Pure and La-doped titania $(TiO_2)$ nanopowders are synthesized by sol-gel technology. The crystallite sizes determined by X-ray diffraction measurements range from 10 to 15 nm. Dependence of structural and morphological characteristics of nanopowders on synthesis conditions and $La^{3+}$ content is investigated by the Raman spectroscopy. Very intensive modes observed in the Raman spectra of all nanopowder samples are assigned to anatase phase of $TiO_2$. Additional Raman modes of extremely low intensity can be related to the presence of a small amount of brookite amorphous phase in nanopowders, which is in accordance with the results of X-ray diffraction analysis. The particle size distribution in TiO_2 nanopowders was estimated from the low frequency Raman spectra, using the fact that the phonon modes in nanosized $TiO_2$ observed in the low frequency region (ω <40 $cm^{-1}$) can be well described by the elastic continuum model, assuming that nanoparticles are of perfect spherical shape and isotropic. The nanosized particle distribution obtained by this method is used for the calculation of the frequency and shape of the most intensive $E_g$ Raman mode in anatase $TiO_2$ by the phonon confinement model. The calculated broadening of this mode, associated with the particle size distribution, coincides well with the characteristics of $E_g$ mode observed in measured Raman spectra of $TiO_2$ nanopowders. This confirms the Raman spectroscopy method as a powerful tool for determination of particle size distribution in nanosized materials.

We present a novel spatial pooling strategy and the results of an extensive multi-scale analysis of the well-known structural similarity index metric (SSIM) for objective image quality evaluation. We show, in contrast with some previous studies, that even relatively simple perceptual importance pooling strategies can significantly improve objective metric performance evaluated as the correlation with subjective quality assessment. In particular, we define an attention and quality driven pooling mechanism that focuses structural comparisons within the SSIM model to only those pixels exhibiting significant structural degradations. We show that optimal objective metric performance is achieved over very sparse spatial domains indeed that ignore most of the signal data. We also investigate an explicit breakdown of the structural models within SSIM and show that in combination with the proposed attention and quality driven pooling some of these models represent well performing metrics in their own right, when applied at appropriate scale for which there may not be a single optimal value. Our experiments demonstrate that the augmented SSIM metric using the proposed pooling model provides performance advantage on an extensive LIVE dataset covering hundreds of degraded images and 5 different distortion types compared to both conventional SSIM and state-of-the-art objective quality metrics.

Opis:
A new method for passive ranging using image size measurements from one sensor has been presented. The method relies on pixel filtration with histogram-based thresholding, followed by intensity and gradient magnitude analysis. Its efficiency and robustness were assessed in real infrared surveillance sequences, and it has proved to lead to better results than non-filtering techniques. The object distance estimation mean relative error does not exceed 3%, which implies that the suggested method enables precise range estimation based on object size measurements. To maximize the benefits of the suggested method, Kalman filter has been included in the algorithm in order to overcome fluctuations of the estimated object size.

Titanium dioxide $(TiO_2)$ nanopowders doped with 0.65, 1, 2, 3 and 4 wt.% of lanthanum ions $(La^{3+})$ were synthesized by sol-gel technology. Dependence of structural and morphological characteristics of nanopowders on $La^{3+}$ content and synthesis conditions is investigated by the Raman spectroscopy. Very intensive modes observed in the Raman spectra of all nanopowder samples are assigned to anatase phase of $TiO_2$. Additional Raman modes of extremely low intensity can be related to the presence of certain amount of highly disordered brookite phase in nanopowders. Dependence of the intensity ratio of the Raman modes which originate from anatase and brookite on doping conditions is specially analyzed. In order to estimate the variation of nanocrystallite size with dopant content, shift and asymmetrical broadening of the most intensive $E_g$ Raman mode of anatase are analyzed by phonon confinement model. The obtained results are compared with the results of X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Special attention is dedicated to the changes in the Raman spectra of pure and La-doped $TiO_2$ nanopowders observed after high temperature treatment.

The transition regions of GdSiO/SiOx and HfO2/ SiOx interfaces have been studied with the high-k layers deposited on silicon substrates. The existence of transition regions was verified by medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) data and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). From measurements of thermally stimulated current (TSC), electron states were found in the transition region of the HfO2/SiOx structures, exhibiting instability attributed to the flexible structural molecular network expected to surround the trap volumes. The investigations were focused especially on whether the trap states belong to an agglomeration consisting of a single charge polarity or of a dipole constellation. We found that flat-band voltage shifts of MOS structures, that reach constant values for increasing oxide thickness, cannot be taken as unique evidence for the existence of dipole layers.
